- 0:00Good morning, you guys. This is friendly.
- 0:03Welcome back to In the Stillness.
- 0:05Happy Thursday. I hope you're having the best
- 0:08day so far. I've just been spending some
- 0:11time in first John, and today we're going to be in a passage
- 0:15that really hit me in a fresh way.
- 0:18It's about spiritual maturity and I think this is something
- 0:22every single one of us can really press into no matter
- 0:26where we are in our walk with God because truthfully,
- 0:30following Jesus is not meant to be stagnant.
- 0:34It is a journey. It's a constant building.
- 0:38And so I'm really excited to get into this.
- 0:40I think we've got some good stuff for today's episode.
- 0:43So we are going to be in first John chapter 2, reading through
- 0:48verses 12 through 14. I remind you, dear children,
- 0:54your sins have been permanently removed because of the power of
- 0:58His name. I remind you, fathers and
- 1:02mothers, you have a relationship with the one who's existed from
- 1:06the beginning. And I remind you, young people,
- 1:10you have defeated the evil. 1. I write these things to you,
- 1:15dear children, because you truly have a relationship with the
- 1:19Father. I write these things, fathers
- 1:22and mothers, because you have had a true relationship with him
- 1:26who is from the beginning. And I write these things, young
- 1:30people, because you are strong, the word of God is treasured in
- 1:35your hearts, and you have defeated the evil. 1 OK, these
- 1:42verses paint such a beautiful picture of growing up in Christ,
- 1:48and I really love that John breaks it into three groups.
- 1:52We see that there are children, there are young people, and then
- 1:56fathers or mothers. But here is what is super
- 2:00important. This is not about physical age.
- 2:05Paul says in first Timothy 4 verse 12, do not let anyone look
- 2:09down on you because you are young, but set an example and
- 2:13then he goes into what we are to set an example in.
- 2:18So maturity in the Kingdom is not necessarily about how many
- 2:22years of life you've lived, it's about how deeply you know God.
- 2:28So you could be 25 and be deeply rooted in Christ, walking in
- 2:33wisdom with an intimate relationship with the Father,
- 2:37and then you could be 60 and still spiritually immature if
- 2:41you ever remain passive in your faith and not been intentional
- 2:45in seeking it out. This is a pilgrimage and we are
- 2:49meant to grow constantly. So there's kind of different
- 2:54levels. That's how I'm thinking of it in
- 2:56my head. First, we start off with
- 2:59children, and he reminds us that your sins are forgiven.
- 3:06That is the baseline. That is the foundation of
- 3:08everything in the faith. The word used here in the Greek,
- 3:13it actually implies someone who is under instruction in
- 3:17teaching. It's like a child being trained.
- 3:21And this implies humility, that there is learning and there is
- 3:25dependence. And honestly, that's where all
- 3:28of us begin with the reception of God's grace, understanding
- 3:34that it is through Jesus, through his sacrifice on the
- 3:38cross, through his blood that we are fully forgiven and fully
- 3:44accepted. I love Psalm 103 verse 12.
- 3:48It says he has removed our sins as far as the east is from the
- 3:52West. So this identity matters because
- 3:57if you don't know that you're truly forgiven completely, then
- 4:02you're going to live like you're still bound.
- 4:05It is in Christ that you are not an outcast anymore.
- 4:10Romans 8 verse 17 calls us Co heirs with Christ. 2nd
- 4:14Corinthians 5 verse 20 it calls us ambassadors of Christ.
- 4:19And first Peter 2 verse 9 says that you are part of a royal
- 4:23priesthood. You are a chosen people, so this
- 4:27is who you are now in Christ Jesus.
- 4:31And then we go to the second level, young people.
- 4:34John says that the young people have defeated the evil 1.
- 4:41Now notice his wording though. Have defeated.
- 4:46This is the stage where you are actively fighting sin and
- 4:50temptation and you are learning how to win.
- 4:54But how do they win? He tells us the word of God
- 4:59lives within you. This is so crucial because if we
- 5:05are not rooted in Scripture, it's going to be really hard to
- 5:09stand when temptation comes our way.
- 5:12Second Timothy 2, verse 22 tells us to flee from the evil desires
- 5:17of youth and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and
- 5:21peace along with others who are pursuing purity.
- 5:26And Jesus modeled this for us. When he was tempted by the devil
- 5:30in the wilderness, He responded with Scripture, the sword of
- 5:35truth. That is how you combat sin and
- 5:39temptation. So storing the Word in your
- 5:43heart, memorizing verses, meditating on the Bible daily,
- 5:48that's not meant to be optional. That's actually how you fight.
- 5:53And it's obviously not just that we have to be consistent in
- 5:57prayer through relationship with God, through the leading of his
- 6:00Spirit. But this is where you move from
- 6:03just knowing truth to actually living it out and experiencing
- 6:08victory. And then we go to Level 3.
- 6:12This is the final stage. Fathers and mothers, so really
- 6:15just older adults. What does John say about them?
- 6:20He says you know him who is from the beginning, and he repeats
- 6:24this two times. This means deep, intimate
- 6:28relationship. This comes from walking with God
- 6:33through various seasons, through the highs, through the lows,
- 6:37through testing and growth, because that is where wisdom is
- 6:41formed and developed. This stage is not just meant to
- 6:46be a rival, it's actually depth. It's about knowing God so
- 6:52personally that you can then overflow and pour into others.
- 6:57Maturity in the Kingdom is not just about you.
- 7:00It's about investing in what's to come and in other believers.
- 7:06So for all of us, this growth is talking to everyone.
- 7:13It doesn't stop at a certain age.
- 7:16You don't just reach a peak in the Christian faith.
- 7:19It doesn't stop when you've done enough or accomplished enough in
- 7:22life. There is always more of God to
- 7:26discover first. Peter 2 verse 2 tells us to
- 7:30crave pure spiritual milk so that you can grow, so that you
- 7:35can be nourished in the truth. Hebrews 5 verse 14 addresses
- 7:40maturing to solid food through practice and through
- 7:43discernment. So every single day that we are
- 7:48alive is a new opportunity to know God more.
- 7:53And I wrote this question down. What is more important than
- 7:58knowing Christ? Honestly, absolutely nothing.
- 8:05And if something is competing in that place, whether it is image
- 8:12control, success, relationships, that thing can become an idol if
- 8:19you're not really careful because it is not meant to be
- 8:23above God. It's not meant to be above
- 8:26knowing Christ and knowing Him intimately.
- 8:30When you truly understand what God has rescued you from, it
- 8:35changes everything. You no longer identify with sin
- 8:40in the bondage that He saved you from.
- 8:43You now identify with Christ. So think about it.
- 8:49Your Father is not looking at you with disappointment.
- 8:53He's not mad at you. He looks at you with love.
- 8:57He looks at you with the same love that he has for His Son
- 9:00Jesus. John 17 verse 23 says that that
- 9:05is just wild to think about. So why would we ever go back to
- 9:10the very sin that separated us from God?
- 9:15Our Calling is to live free and freedom does not look rigid and
- 9:21ritualistic. It's not lifeless.
- 9:24It looks like joy. Psalm 24 verse one says the
- 9:30earth is the Lord's and everything in it.
- 9:33And I feel like lately that verse has been replaying in my
- 9:37head as I read it a few days ago.
- 9:40And I've just been thinking about how God is good.
- 9:45Simply put, our Creator is good. Therefore what He has made in
- 9:50this world is good. And yes, there is still sin.
- 9:54There is evil in this world that we're going to encounter on the
- 9:57daily, but we are actually invited to enjoy life with Him,
- 10:04in fellowship with him. So the question that I'm going
- 10:08to bring to y'all is, are you truly living in that freedom?
- 10:13It's not a fake happiness, but a rooted joy that truly comes from
- 10:21being in relationship with your father, from enjoying what he
- 10:25has created and living out your purpose and calling.
- 10:31So with all that, I'm gonna go ahead and close this out in
- 10:33prayer. Dear Jesus, thank you for who
- 10:40you are. Thank you that we are fully
- 10:44forgiven, we are fully loved, and we have been invited into a
- 10:51deeper relationship with You. There is no peak, there is no
- 10:55limit. I pray that you would grow us in
- 10:59spiritual maturity, that we would hunger to know You more
- 11:04each day. May we thirst for righteousness,
- 11:08Jesus. We don't want to stay stagnant.
- 11:12We don't want to settle for less than You have to offer.
- 11:15I pray that we would love Your word more and more, that we
- 11:19would walk in victory over sin, and that we would live in the
- 11:24freedom that you've already given us.
- 11:26May we live in that access. God, let our lives reflect real
- 11:31joy so that others would see you through us.
- 11:37We trust you with today. We give you our everything and
- 11:42we just, we live to exalt your name, Jesus in your name, Amen.
- 11:49OK, that is today's episode. Praying for you guys as you go
- 11:54about the rest of your day as you close out this week and
- 11:59especially Holy Thursday as we look ahead to tomorrow being
- 12:02Good Friday. That you would really just sit
- 12:05with the Father and ask Him for a deeper revelation of His grace
- 12:10for what He has rescued you from so that it can channel more
- 12:16appreciation and so that you can live in the fullness of joy in
- 12:19His presence. I'll see you on the next
- 12:21episode.
