- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Up next
- 0:07Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way. It's Sonia
- 0:09Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit. Good morning. Thank you
- 0:12Speaker 1: for joining us here today, the 6th of October, a Tuesday.
- 0:16Speaker 1: We are counting down to all the Formula One activities
- 0:19Speaker 1: happening here in Singapore. Cannot wait. That's for sure. Honestly,
- 0:22Speaker 1: I don't know how the drivers do it. So many
- 0:25Speaker 1: things going on. Stay tuned. Singapore's number one hit music station.
- 0:31Speaker 1: OK, so this is truly um considered vintage at this point,
- 0:35Speaker 1: but over the weekend, we celebrated Mean Girls Day on
- 0:38Speaker 1: the 3rd of October. Did you wear pink? No, you
- 0:41Speaker 1: know me, I don't have a single thing that's in pink.
- 0:44Speaker 1: Have you ever seen me in pink? Yes, I have.
- 0:46Speaker 1: When it was probably not by choice or a color
- 0:49Speaker 1: that you have to wear. It was probably not like
- 0:51Speaker 1: my personal choice, but um, you know how nostalgia has
- 0:55Speaker 1: become like a trend again, right, for like our Gen
- 0:58Speaker 1: Zs and.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Alphas. So I'm actually pleasantly surprised quite a number of
- 1:02Speaker 1: like Gen Zs and Jen alphas still know Mean Girls.
- 1:05Speaker 1: It's still iconic. It is still something that is referenced.
- 1:09Speaker 1: It is still on Netflix, but I think they might
- 1:12Speaker 1: remove it very soon. It might be. I'm just kidding.
- 1:15Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. By the way, nostalgia is huge, you know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: they removed Friends and they put it back. Do you realize?
- 1:21Speaker 1: Mean Girls is 22 years old as we speak.
- 1:26Speaker 1: And if you look at the cast members, they still
- 1:28Speaker 1: look just as beautiful. Yeah, Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams, Rachel McAdams,
- 1:33Speaker 1: Amanda Seyfried, and a few others. Tina Fey played the,
- 1:37Speaker 1: if I'm not wrong. Um, Amy Poehler? Yeah, Tina Fey
- 1:40Speaker 1: was the teacher. Ah, yes, both of them were in
- 1:42Speaker 1: the film, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey. You know it's
- 1:45Speaker 1: gonna be Comedy Central.
- 1:46Speaker 1: And two of them are there. Yeah, but some of
- 1:48Speaker 1: the jokes won't fly now if you think about it. Well,
- 1:51Speaker 1: plenty of shows back then, honestly, even some episodes of
- 1:54Speaker 1: Friends will not fly right now. Like all your vintage shows,
- 1:58Speaker 1: it's not going to happen right now. I remember for
- 2:00Speaker 1: your birthday a few years ago, I bought you the
- 2:02Speaker 1: burn book. Is it still there? Of course, I still
- 2:04Speaker 1: have it. Is my name in there. Please say no.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I can't confirm with you guys. I realized that when
- 2:10Speaker 1: Gaga was here last year, she sang a portion of
- 2:13Speaker 1: this song, she did. So Bruno Mars coming here next year,
- 2:17Speaker 1: will he do the same? Is it? Will he sing
- 2:19Speaker 1: the other portion? I mean, look, he, we, we already
- 2:22Speaker 1: know that Anderson Paak is going to be here as
- 2:24Speaker 1: DJ Pee Wee. We know that, right? So.
- 2:27Speaker 1: That's one collaboration down. I'm pretty sure he's gonna find
- 2:30Speaker 1: a way to still do, or maybe he'll pick someone
- 2:32Speaker 1: from the audience to do like the Lady Gaga part.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Or if he wants to a local singer, Shaza, step up.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Oh yes, come on, Shaza. Would love to hear her
- 2:43Speaker 1: do that. Who else would be a good Gaga actually?
- 2:45Speaker 1: I think like Riley, Sandra Tang. Oh yeah, she has
- 2:49Speaker 1: a good like Gaga voice potentially. I'm just.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Thinking, yeah, Shaza or Riley. Yeah, these two. That's for sure, right?
- 2:57Speaker 1: We're excited. Anyway, um, that is next year, 2027. Here's
- 3:02Speaker 1: hoping that, you know, you'll be able to get you
- 3:03Speaker 1: the tickets that you want. Coming up in just a
- 3:06Speaker 1: little bit, I feel like when it comes to this
- 3:09Speaker 1: particular issue, we take one step forward and two steps
- 3:12Speaker 1: back sometimes, and it's related to our buskers here in Singapore.
- 3:18Speaker 1: And as you know, the art and the idea of
- 3:21Speaker 1: busking has changed so much over the years, OK. Like I,
- 3:24Speaker 1: I always remember when I was a kid and you know,
- 3:26Speaker 1: walking around, um, you, you see different types of performance
- 3:29Speaker 1: back then and now. Now it's so nice to actually
- 3:32Speaker 1: see like young.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Aspiring singers take on busking first to train themselves. I'm
- 3:38Speaker 1: very sure if we invited this particular busker onto our show, yeah,
- 3:42Speaker 1: she would show up. Let's try doing that. I will
- 3:45Speaker 1: fill you in on this in just a little bit.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Happily married now, right? Dave Cameron?
- 3:51Speaker 1: She's. Yeah, she's starting a new chapter and I think
- 3:54Speaker 1: they only had like a handful of people at their solemnization,
- 3:57Speaker 1: which is so cute. I love that. As you know,
- 4:00Speaker 1: if for example, one day it happens for me, I
- 4:02Speaker 1: might do that as well, just like a get-together 30
- 4:06Speaker 1: or 40 people book out one nice restaurant, enjoy a
- 4:09Speaker 1: good meal. Yeah, basically kind of like what people were
- 4:12Speaker 1: doing right after COVID. Yeah, during that time, attended.
- 4:16Speaker 1: for the house renovations. Anyway, so earlier on I said, um,
- 4:19Speaker 1: busking has changed so much since, you know, our parents'
- 4:22Speaker 1: time and now, and I always remember walking by like
- 4:25Speaker 1: Orchard Road and being quite amazed with all the performances,
- 4:28Speaker 1: but now it's almost become like a test bed for
- 4:31Speaker 1: people to perform and for people to pursue their musical interests,
- 4:35Speaker 1: and busking has become quite something in Singapore. No longer
- 4:39Speaker 1: just music or people on the guitar.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Or a keyboard, there are people juggling, there are magicians.
- 4:45Speaker 1: There are really like almost circus acts being shown to
- 4:49Speaker 1: you on the streets of Orchard Road or wherever here
- 4:51Speaker 1: in Singapore. Yeah, so it's not just Orchard. I mean,
- 4:53Speaker 1: all around Singapore, you can get a permit to busk
- 4:56Speaker 1: and you can get the, you know, the the right
- 4:58Speaker 1: documents to busk at different malls or different places. I
- 5:01Speaker 1: think our friends over at NEC might handle that for you. So,
- 5:05Speaker 1: so unfortunately for this.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Young band here in Singapore, taking you to, uh, unfortunately
- 5:11Speaker 1: where I grew up, Pasir Ris MRT station. Pass. So
- 5:15Speaker 1: I used to commute there every day, getting to school,
- 5:18Speaker 1: coming home and all that. So I'm quite familiar with
- 5:19Speaker 1: the MRT station there. Um, this band that were busking
- 5:24Speaker 1: outside Pasir Ris MRT station just a couple of days back,
- 5:27Speaker 1: they were shouted at to turn their volume down because
- 5:30Speaker 1: apparently they were too loud for this man, OK.
- 5:33Speaker 1: And this man was the only man that complained, the
- 5:35Speaker 1: rest of the public did not have an issue with
- 5:37Speaker 1: it at all. Again, if one person says something, it
- 5:43Speaker 1: doesn't represent the consensus of others were just walking past
- 5:47Speaker 1: or maybe even appreciating the music. But um, the situation
- 5:51Speaker 1: was actually caught on video and it turned quite tense
- 5:53Speaker 1: after this man like approached the performers and started yelling
- 5:57Speaker 1: at them.
- 5:57Speaker 1: And I think it was about close to noon, if
- 6:00Speaker 1: I'm not wrong. There were a lot of other people
- 6:02Speaker 1: that witnessed this, by the way. Um, so the, the
- 6:05Speaker 1: video was posted actually on Instagram by the band themselves.
- 6:08Speaker 1: They were in the middle of Locked Out of Heaven
- 6:10Speaker 1: by Bruno Mars when it happened, and he was like,
- 6:13Speaker 1: you lower the, lower your volume, you're too loud. He
- 6:16Speaker 1: was shouting over the music and everything. So everyone heard it. Um,
- 6:19Speaker 1: they stayed calm, kudos to them. They stayed very, very calm.
- 6:22Speaker 1: And here's hoping that they don't.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Encounter this anymore. The band themselves said that they have
- 6:27Speaker 1: a sound monitoring app as well to ensure that it
- 6:31Speaker 1: was within the decibels that they were required to for busking,
- 6:34Speaker 1: which is 65 decibels. So I want to give a
- 6:37Speaker 1: shout out to the lead singer Jessica Lee, who whenever
- 6:41Speaker 1: she goes and busks at Pasir Ris MRT she will
- 6:44Speaker 1: go live on TikTok and on Instagram as well. And
- 6:46Speaker 1: once in a while I'll drop by. And do you
- 6:48Speaker 1: know whose sister sister she is? Yeah, you just told me.
- 6:51Speaker 1: Vanessa Lee, the runner runner runner and they are very cute,
- 6:55Speaker 1: interesting content together as well. So I think, you know,
- 6:57Speaker 1: both of us should reach out to Jessica and get
- 6:59Speaker 1: her band onto our show. Yeah, actually I already texted
- 7:02Speaker 1: our producer to get on it. Exactly. No, I think
- 7:06Speaker 1: there's so much potential there and you know, for all
- 7:08Speaker 1: we know, this could be their opening to something else, right?
- 7:11Speaker 1: What if the video goes viral and someone sees it? Hey,
- 7:15Speaker 1: you never know. Maybe he might invite them.
- 7:17Speaker 1: To open for him in 2027. Yeah, just a very,
- 7:21Speaker 1: very extremely random fact this morning, but you know, every
- 7:24Speaker 1: morning I have a ritual of making my coffee and stuff, right?
- 7:27Speaker 1: And on some days, like maybe the recent few days,
- 7:31Speaker 1: I've been very grateful for the existence of coffee, OK,
- 7:35Speaker 1: to which I think I would have never survived a
- 7:37Speaker 1: day in my life over the past like 10 years
- 7:39Speaker 1: or even longer than that without coffee. Um, apparently.
- 7:44Speaker 1: While it was discovered in Ethiopia, that's why a lot
- 7:46Speaker 1: of the beans are from that region, right? It was
- 7:49Speaker 1: apparently developed into a beverage by monks in Yemen. That's
- 7:54Speaker 1: how coffee came to be. I didn't, I mean, this
- 7:56Speaker 1: is what, this is what a quick search is telling me, so.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I believe it. I believe it. And sometimes I
- 8:03Speaker 1: also research on who was the first person to try right? Yeah, um,
- 8:08Speaker 1: not just coffee, but cat poop coffee. Yeah, that one
- 8:11Speaker 1: is confusing or elephant poop coffee or not just coffee,
- 8:15Speaker 1: things like uni.
- 8:17Speaker 1: Like sea urchin, who was the guy that went there,
- 8:21Speaker 1: saw this spiky black creature and said, let me crack
- 8:24Speaker 1: it open and eat it. Like, who? So there you go.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Have a look for yourself if you want to. And
- 8:28Speaker 1: if you're wondering about tea, um, did you know that
- 8:31Speaker 1: it was actually popularized in Asia first? Oh, I'm not surprised. Yeah,
- 8:36Speaker 1: before our friends in the UK, um, commercialized it or
- 8:39Speaker 1: came here and they realized, oh, OK, let's take it
- 8:42Speaker 1: and call it English breakfast.
- 8:45Speaker 1: Kidding. I actually love Earl Grey. Yeah, Earl Grey tea
- 8:48Speaker 1: is one of my favorites, but the, the, the Chinese
- 8:51Speaker 1: auntie in me will always go for like your Asian
- 8:53Speaker 1: options like your green tea, or jasmine pu, this kind
- 8:56Speaker 1: of stuff. So for example, if you watch the Pirates
- 8:59Speaker 1: of the Caribbean or any pirates involving the Caribbean and
- 9:04Speaker 1: all the English sailors and the Spanish sailors and they're
- 9:07Speaker 1: drinking tea, chances are these sailors from Asia have been
- 9:10Speaker 1: to Asia.
- 9:12Speaker 1: They brought it back to their home country and they
- 9:14Speaker 1: serve it to people over there. I think nothing has
- 9:15Speaker 1: changed with Asians over centuries because we always want to
- 9:18Speaker 1: be first, right? Technically, that's we were always the first ones. Yeah.
- 9:23Speaker 1: It's inherent in our DNA. About to get to some
- 9:26Speaker 1: of your shout-outs, but today because we had a very
- 9:29Speaker 1: sweet and meaningful message come in quite early, we decided
- 9:32Speaker 1: we want to reserve today's shout out and dedication for
- 9:34Speaker 1: this person. OK, are you ready, Sonia? Here we go.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I want to say good morning to Agnes, and Agnes says,
- 9:40Speaker 1: hello Sojo. My son Jared from Neon Primary is starting
- 9:45Speaker 1: his primary 5 end of year exams with oral being
- 9:49Speaker 1: the first today. I want to give him lots of
- 9:51Speaker 1: aura and tell him to stay chill and slow down,
- 9:55Speaker 1: wishing him best of luck. You can do it. Could
- 9:57Speaker 1: you please play him Imagine Dragons' Believer to him. Love
- 10:02Speaker 1: him lots from.
- 10:03Speaker 1: Mommy and daddy, so cute. Hey Jared, all the best.
- 10:08Speaker 1: Pace yourself when you read the passage. Yeah, but she
- 10:12Speaker 1: said she hopes that he'll like calm and chill, right,
- 10:14Speaker 1: calm down and chill. So maybe he's been working really hard. Yeah,
- 10:18Speaker 1: leading up to the exams. All the best to you, Jared.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And I think it's precisely because the authorities feel like
- 10:25Speaker 1: there could be a potential for this case to get
- 10:28Speaker 1: even bigger.
- 10:29Speaker 1: They've decided to announce how much money us Singaporeans have
- 10:34Speaker 1: lost to fitness-related closures. OK. Here we go. I cannot wait. So, I,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I'm sure you remember this, uh, was it 1 or
- 10:42Speaker 1: 2 weeks ago that several different, um, outlets of a
- 10:47Speaker 1: very popular chain.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Actually closed down and yoga, right? And then there was
- 10:52Speaker 1: this yoga Inc one as well that followed shortly after that.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And I think just in general, people are a bit
- 10:58Speaker 1: wary now. They're like, oh, better check my package or
- 11:01Speaker 1: better check the legitimacy of the place I signed up with, right?
- 11:04Speaker 1: But how would they have known because these are big
- 11:06Speaker 1: brands with reputable names. You would not have expected them
- 11:10Speaker 1: to close, right? I mean, yoga and fitness, it was
- 11:13Speaker 1: quite shocking, shocking. But, but all your other yoga.
- 11:17Speaker 1: Lattes or your studios, I feel you really need to
- 11:22Speaker 1: research before you sign a package with them because you
- 11:24Speaker 1: never know these are just like small, small independent studios
- 11:27Speaker 1: where yes, they try to open it for a while,
- 11:30Speaker 1: but if it cannot work. Actually, no, I, I need
- 11:33Speaker 1: to correct you I feel I don't think that the
- 11:36Speaker 1: problem is with the small studios because typically they don't
- 11:39Speaker 1: have a chain, you see. They just run one studio
- 11:43Speaker 1: and then at the most if it really works, they
- 11:44Speaker 1: might open another but
- 11:46Speaker 1: I think it's the scary one comes where like they
- 11:49Speaker 1: rapidly open really fast across the island and then maybe
- 11:52Speaker 1: they can't keep up with operations or costs and stuff.
- 11:54Speaker 1: I mean,
- 11:55Speaker 1: Personally, I think we should be supporting our Singaporean studios dodgy. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 12:02Speaker 1: you can't ever discount that, right? But in total, Singapore
- 12:07Speaker 1: consumers have lost about $3.82 million from fitness-related closures. OK?
- 12:14Speaker 1: And our friends over at Case are now calling for
- 12:17Speaker 1: mandatory safeguards on your prepaid packages at this point. So
- 12:20Speaker 1: I think, you know what, I think it's about time.
- 12:24Speaker 1: I can only imagine they might come up with a
- 12:27Speaker 1: small little clause in the contract where hopefully if something
- 12:31Speaker 1: were to happen, there could be a small chance to
- 12:34Speaker 1: get your money back. That's my only hope. I don't know.
- 12:43Speaker 1: But but but that's the thing, if you're a consumer
- 12:45Speaker 1: and you sign up for a package and something like
- 12:48Speaker 1: a gym, a sudden gym closure, the first thing you're
- 12:52Speaker 1: asking is can I get
- 12:53Speaker 1: My money back and that's why I go to case
- 12:55Speaker 1: or any of the official channels for a complaint with
- 12:59Speaker 1: the hopes that, OK, yes, I put in 100 for
- 13:01Speaker 1: a package, can I get it back? And then it's
- 13:04Speaker 1: a waiting game of whether you even see a fraction
- 13:07Speaker 1: of it. I know, I know. Um, look, regardless of
- 13:11Speaker 1: whether you've already signed your package or don't, we don't
- 13:15Speaker 1: want you to feel bad about it or feel too
- 13:17Speaker 1: concerned about it, but just keep a close eye and
- 13:19Speaker 1: I think, you know, do your research if you can.
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'm sure that people did their research when it came
- 13:24Speaker 1: to like true fitness, through yoga, but it's hard to predict.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I try not to. I'll do like a 3 month
- 13:33Speaker 1: or 6 month package, but the yearly ones, yeah, I
- 13:38Speaker 1: skeptical about that.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Alright, so, um, just be careful out there. Many things
- 13:43Speaker 1: happening in the world right now. OK, so this is interesting.
- 13:47Speaker 1: Every single media outlet in the world are reporting on
- 13:50Speaker 1: this one. So I'm just waiting for maybe say Singapore's
- 13:53Speaker 1: media to pick up on it. I think Mothership has
- 13:55Speaker 1: done something on a post.
- 13:58Speaker 1: This one involving a plague research institute in Siberia, mostly
- 14:05Speaker 1: the region of Irkutsk, hopefully I'm saying that correctly, somewhere
- 14:09Speaker 1: in Russia, where a 28 year old laboratory worker passed
- 14:14Speaker 1: away after falling ill and died in undisclosed circumstances. So
- 14:19Speaker 1: the authorities in Russia have now quarantined dozens of people.
- 14:25Speaker 1: And even the head of Russia's health ministry going to
- 14:29Speaker 1: the region to monitor and also study whatever just happened
- 14:33Speaker 1: and the rumors point to this, uh, unknown pneumonic plague.
- 14:37Speaker 1: They call it with open inverted commas, but so far,
- 14:41Speaker 1: according to the officials in Russia, it's under control and
- 14:45Speaker 1: it's OK. Good, good, good, good. I'm not gonna lie,
- 14:48Speaker 1: when I saw the headline, I, it, it kind of
- 14:52Speaker 1: Brought back a little bit um of memories, right, of
- 14:54Speaker 1: COVID-19 and and how that didn't happen too long ago.
- 14:57Speaker 1: Can I also give you one piece of history here?
- 15:00Speaker 1: Apparently the oldest known plague outbreak came 5.5000 years ago
- 15:06Speaker 1: in Siberia. Oh, it's interesting. So plague is endemic in
- 15:12Speaker 1: Siberia because the bacteria that caused it 5000, 5500 years ago,
- 15:17Speaker 1: it's still there. So it's quite interesting.
- 15:20Speaker 1: they got all these research institutes to study the bacteria. Actually,
- 15:23Speaker 1: I wonder whether it's got to do with the climate.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I mean, look, I'm no expert, but I heard that,
- 15:27Speaker 1: you know, um, it can thrive in cold areas. Like
- 15:32Speaker 1: it kind of just goes dormant and then it can
- 15:34Speaker 1: be activated again in a way. So, uh, more facts
- 15:38Speaker 1: for you. A plague comes in three forms affecting different
- 15:41Speaker 1: parts of the body. Pneumonic plague, an infection of the lungs,
- 15:45Speaker 1: prompts the patient to cough out.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Infectious airborne droplets. There you go. So we'll be keeping
- 15:50Speaker 1: a close eye on it though, and I think we'll
- 15:53Speaker 1: also keep a lookout if our Singapore has anything to say. Yeah,
- 15:57Speaker 1: this is why, forgive me, for example, you cough next
- 15:59Speaker 1: to me, right? I might give you a bit of
- 16:00Speaker 1: a scow. No, I'm, I'm moving away for sure. I'm
- 16:03Speaker 1: not afraid to do that anymore. I used to be.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Like we need to maintain the hygiene habits we learned
- 16:08Speaker 1: from COVID-19. It seems that people are forgetting it now. Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 1: you're so right. Now before we hit 8 a.m.
- 16:14Speaker 1: Yesterday, Joe was just talking about the BCRS machine and
- 16:17Speaker 1: how he couldn't locate one near his restaurant that he
- 16:20Speaker 1: was eating at. Um, imagine this one, OK. So, this
- 16:24Speaker 1: particular shopper went to get a drink or some drinks
- 16:26Speaker 1: from a supermarket and I stand corrected, it wasn't Ang
- 16:30Speaker 1: Mo Kio, it was they have one over at Toa Payoh. Um,
- 16:35Speaker 1: I think they have a few different chains, but anyway,
- 16:37Speaker 1: in total, he bought several drinks from this particular supermarket, OK. Um,
- 16:41Speaker 1: I don't exactly want to name it.
- 16:44Speaker 1: Yeah, I'll tell you why after this, but you can
- 16:46Speaker 1: just read about it on the news articles. So, what
- 16:50Speaker 1: happened was, he's claiming that these drinks that were bought
- 16:53Speaker 1: from the supermarket were unable to be processed by the machine, OK.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And the reason is because when you process it through
- 17:01Speaker 1: the machine, it needs to scan the barcode, right, or
- 17:03Speaker 1: something like that. I'm not sure how that works, but.
- 17:05Speaker 1: So it should be able to sense it. However, because
- 17:12Speaker 1: this shop, I guess, wanted to reprice the drinks, they
- 17:16Speaker 1: stuck their own barcode over the original barcode. OK.
- 17:20Speaker 1: So when you take, what happens when you take out
- 17:22Speaker 1: a can of drink from the refrigerator, it condenses and
- 17:25Speaker 1: then the sticker will melt, right? Like, so he couldn't
- 17:28Speaker 1: peel the sticker off the can and was complaining and saying, dude,
- 17:32Speaker 1: all my cans got rejected by the BCRS machine because
- 17:36Speaker 1: of these price tags. So, um, this guy decided to
- 17:39Speaker 1: go on social media to say, if you are intending
- 17:41Speaker 1: to process your cans through the machine, you might not
- 17:44Speaker 1: want to buy any cold drinks from this particular supermarket. Yeah.
- 17:49Speaker 1: Um, I guess they have to, they have to find
- 17:51Speaker 1: a way to, to revise the way that they stick
- 17:54Speaker 1: their barcodes. Yeah, I'm sure that has since gone viral.
- 17:57Speaker 1: It has. So if you want, please go take a look.
- 18:00Speaker 1: It's even reported on some of the news channels already. OK,
- 18:03Speaker 1: so whichever supermarket this is, I'm pretty sure the team
- 18:08Speaker 1: is now looking at all the cans and saying, OK,
- 18:10Speaker 1: please go and rest the whole thing, yeah, yeah, reposition it,
- 18:13Speaker 1: but how do you then cover the original barcode? I
- 18:15Speaker 1: don't know. They.
- 18:18Speaker 1: But yeah, it must be frustrating, especially if you can
- 18:20Speaker 1: imagine you bought like 20 drinks or something from the
- 18:23Speaker 1: same shop. I mean, given how the BCRS machines and
- 18:26Speaker 1: the movement has not been a year old yet, they're still,
- 18:30Speaker 1: you know, adapting teething issues, teething issues, OK, we're getting there. Yeah,
- 18:35Speaker 1: we will get there. Suddenly sound like National Day campaign.
- 18:39Speaker 1: We were just a famous phrase from a famous MVP.
- 18:42Speaker 1: I know, and we're talking about the places where you
- 18:45Speaker 1: might not want to bring your parents to, OK.
- 18:49Speaker 1: Sorry, we don't mean to be offensive or anything. As
- 18:52Speaker 1: you know, I'm very close to my parents. I would
- 18:53Speaker 1: bring them pretty much almost everywhere. But, but, um, after
- 18:58Speaker 1: Joakim and I witnessed this grown-up, grown, grown man.
- 19:02Speaker 1: Bring his mom to the weekend concert on Friday. We
- 19:06Speaker 1: were scratching our heads a little bit because I think
- 19:09Speaker 1: she had no idea what was going on. Again, it's
- 19:12Speaker 1: very sweet but she couldn't understand English, so she was
- 19:14Speaker 1: just watching her drama on the phone while her son
- 19:18Speaker 1: was partying the night away. So well done to the son,
- 19:20Speaker 1: you know, mother and son bonding time.
- 19:22Speaker 1: And she definitely did not understand all the X-rated words
- 19:24Speaker 1: he was belting out. So it got me wondering where
- 19:28Speaker 1: is one place you won't bring your parents or your
- 19:30Speaker 1: mom and dad. Yeah, I actually have an answer to this,
- 19:33Speaker 1: but I have no regrets at all. OK, anyway, your
- 19:36Speaker 1: mom's not in town, right? She's not listening. No, no, no,
- 19:38Speaker 1: she might be tuned in. Hello mom. She's in Korea
- 19:41Speaker 1: with her family, uh, so.
- 19:44Speaker 1: One of my, actually not one, my mom's favorite comedian
- 19:48Speaker 1: or comedian here in Singapore, Kumar. OK, OK, and you
- 19:53Speaker 1: know a Kumar show can be very naughty, very raunchy,
- 19:58Speaker 1: so it's the kind of show where you want to
- 20:01Speaker 1: go with your girlfriends.
- 20:02Speaker 1: You know, like, it would be awkward if you all
- 20:04Speaker 1: went together. So when Kumar was playing at the Marina
- 20:07Speaker 1: Bay Sands Theater, was it Marina Bay Sands Theater? I
- 20:10Speaker 1: think it should be there. Or was it Capitol? No,
- 20:13Speaker 1: I can't remember. Uh, he had a show and my
- 20:15Speaker 1: mom was like, I want to go and see lah.
- 20:16Speaker 1: So I said, OK, la, I'll go and watch him yo.
- 20:20Speaker 1: Why the jokes really I mean it's a Kuma, of course,
- 20:25Speaker 1: I mean, but my mom was laughing out loud. Then
- 20:28Speaker 1: why would you not bring, I mean, OK, so do
- 20:31Speaker 1: I laugh along with the joke? just look at me
- 20:34Speaker 1: you know all these things. Why would you not? You're
- 20:36Speaker 1: almost 40, but you know, in your mom's eyes, you're
- 20:40Speaker 1: always that 7 year old boy running around the house, right?
- 20:44Speaker 1: I mean, look like just it was 2 weeks ago.
- 20:48Speaker 1: Um, when I launched my shoe collaboration with Pretty, uh,
- 20:51Speaker 1: some of my girlfriends came to, to get some shoes
- 20:54Speaker 1: and try some shoes and all that. So since we're
- 20:56Speaker 1: all there, we said, why don't we just go like
- 20:58Speaker 1: eat dinner after, right? And it's, it's a rare occasion
- 21:01Speaker 1: where my mom joined, joined us for the dinner and drinks. Usually,
- 21:06Speaker 1: I mean, OK, on special occasions, yes, my friends have.
- 21:08Speaker 1: They all met my mom before. They all like hanging
- 21:10Speaker 1: out with her. But I think my mom at that time,
- 21:13Speaker 1: she had not actually experienced like a gossip session with
- 21:17Speaker 1: the girls, if you know what I mean. OK. And
- 21:21Speaker 1: after which I think she was, she did make a
- 21:23Speaker 1: comment saying like, well, I'm so surprised at the like
- 21:26Speaker 1: true personalities of some of your friends.
- 21:29Speaker 1: And they're all my unhinged girlfriends, you know who they are. Mama,
- 21:33Speaker 1: show them how it's done? No, this is how you gossip.
- 21:37Speaker 1: I show you my time. I think she had a,
- 21:40Speaker 1: I think she had a blast, honestly. So I, OK,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I will need some time to answer this. Where would
- 21:45Speaker 1: I not bring my parents? Let me get back to
- 21:48Speaker 1: you because I think I've done quite a lot of
- 21:51Speaker 1: interesting things with my folks before. I mean, my, my
- 21:53Speaker 1: dad being one of the rare parents that would actually
- 21:57Speaker 1: open me a.
- 21:58Speaker 1: at a club for my birthday. OK, I, I wouldn't,
- 22:01Speaker 1: I wouldn't for the life of me, not say, but
- 22:04Speaker 1: I wouldn't watch Game of Thrones or yeah, OK, watching,
- 22:08Speaker 1: watching that kind of shows, yeah, definitely not. Yeah, some
- 22:11Speaker 1: of my favorites on Netflix with, with my mom or
- 22:13Speaker 1: dad you watch yourself. It's a bit awkward for me. Yeah,
- 22:18Speaker 1: I agree. Give us a call 669-11987 or drop us
- 22:23Speaker 1: a WhatsApp message 90050987.
- 22:27Speaker 1: Do you have a scenario in mind or a place
- 22:29Speaker 1: in mind or an activity that you will definitely not
- 22:32Speaker 1: do with your parents? Question for you is, where would
- 22:36Speaker 1: you not take your parents to inspired by us witnessing
- 22:40Speaker 1: and being right next to a grown man that brought
- 22:43Speaker 1: his mom to the weekend concert?
- 22:45Speaker 1: Which is, of course, you know, um, the words are
- 22:48Speaker 1: not the most ideal, but she was just kind of
- 22:50Speaker 1: sitting there looking clueless. Again, don't get us wrong, it's
- 22:53Speaker 1: a very sweet thing to see and sweet thing to
- 22:55Speaker 1: do and in a way, thankfully the mom doesn't understand English. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 22:59Speaker 1: I know because, yeah, yeah, you know his lyrics.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Want to say good morning to Frederick on WhatsApp. Hey
- 23:05Speaker 1: Sonia and Joakim. Once I brought my mom to a
- 23:08Speaker 1: cafe because I love cafe hopping and I wanted to
- 23:11Speaker 1: try cafe hopping with her. Most of the cafes tend
- 23:14Speaker 1: to have coffee, tea, and matcha.
- 23:16Speaker 1: And the food, most of the time they were Western food.
- 23:20Speaker 1: She was asking me, eh, why no Chinese cuisine? Why
- 23:22Speaker 1: no Chinese tea? Why got so much Western culture? I
- 23:25Speaker 1: had a nervous laugh and simply said, Oh, it's a cafe.
- 23:28Speaker 1: Since then I avoided bringing her to cafes. For context,
- 23:31Speaker 1: she prefers Chinese and Asian cuisine cuisine. Me too. Really? Yeah,
- 23:37Speaker 1: don't you know me well enough, except when it comes
- 23:39Speaker 1: to drinks, I'm OK. Yeah, I want the espresso type
- 23:42Speaker 1: of coffee, but anything else that's like food related, I'm
- 23:44Speaker 1: an Asian person.
- 23:46Speaker 1: One more coming in from Gary. Gary says, morning, Sojo.
- 23:49Speaker 1: Back in 2015 when Star Wars The Force Awakens was
- 23:53Speaker 1: out in cinemas, my dad said, Hey, let's go watch
- 23:55Speaker 1: it as a family since he loves Star Wars. Throughout
- 23:58Speaker 1: the film, my dad was enjoying the story, but my
- 24:00Speaker 1: mom was very clueless and staring at the screen like,
- 24:03Speaker 1: why is she there? Let's just say no more Star
- 24:05Speaker 1: Wars movies for her. I think this is a universal thing,
- 24:09Speaker 1: you know, like my mom spends 80% of her life
- 24:13Speaker 1: not understanding what's going on on the screen.
- 24:16Speaker 1: She's probably tuning in right now. I have a question.
- 24:19Speaker 1: So during your mom and dad's dating phase, right, whenever
- 24:23Speaker 1: your dad your mom for a movie, was she asking
- 24:26Speaker 1: a lot of questions? Did your dad get the live
- 24:28Speaker 1: DVD commentary that you always do? You know, I don't know.
- 24:31Speaker 1: I have to ask them.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Let's see if they just text me immediately after reply
- 24:35Speaker 1: saying yes. I would not be surprised. I mean, I
- 24:37Speaker 1: have to have had it from somewhere. Now I know
- 24:39Speaker 1: where you got it. I inherited it. It runs in
- 24:42Speaker 1: the family. Talking about the places or maybe activities that
- 24:45Speaker 1: you will not want to bring your parents for.
- 24:48Speaker 1: I mean, disclaimer, I'm very close to my parents and
- 24:51Speaker 1: I would bring them pretty much almost everywhere. OK, um, but,
- 24:54Speaker 1: but I think there's still some situations that might be
- 24:58Speaker 1: awkward if you have your parents with you. Alright, I
- 25:00Speaker 1: want to say hello to CK on WhatsApp. Hey guys,
- 25:03Speaker 1: on today's topic, I avoid bringing my mom to movies
- 25:06Speaker 1: because she sleeps halfway through. Oh no. For my dad,
- 25:09Speaker 1: I avoid bringing him to expensive.
- 25:11Speaker 1: Places to eat because he likes to eat value for
- 25:13Speaker 1: money food. Once I brought him to PS Cafe and
- 25:16Speaker 1: he remarked that he was allergic to the high prices. No,
- 25:21Speaker 1: but it's not OK. I, I don't know if, um,
- 25:23Speaker 1: our texters and our listeners can relate to this, right?
- 25:26Speaker 1: But on that note, sometimes when I book a restaurant or,
- 25:31Speaker 1: you know, bring my parents for lunch or something on Sundays, right?
- 25:34Speaker 1: Um, I don't really want them to see the bill
- 25:37Speaker 1: because they will scold me. Yeah, they will sort of
- 25:40Speaker 1: say like, so when the bill comes and I get
- 25:42Speaker 1: it right, my mom will be like, So how much?
- 25:46Speaker 1: Then she'll try and guess a number. I'll always say
- 25:48Speaker 1: it's lower. My mom is the other way around. She'll say,
- 25:52Speaker 1: Oh yeah, so expensive, but very nice. She'll start eating. Like,
- 25:56Speaker 1: can I have one more? Exactly. Exactly. Yeah, but.
- 26:00Speaker 1: No need lah, no need, but she was, she wants
- 26:03Speaker 1: it you know her too well. Yeah. I want to
- 26:05Speaker 1: say hello to Andy as well. Andy says, morning guys.
- 26:08Speaker 1: Not exactly my parents, but it's my mom-in-law. To shopping.
- 26:12Speaker 1: She would ask for a discount of ridiculous amounts even
- 26:15Speaker 1: when it's fixed prices. I find it very amusing and
- 26:17Speaker 1: my wife really hates it. She would just wait outside
- 26:20Speaker 1: and leave me with my mother-in-law, but we all know
- 26:22Speaker 1: she was just joking with the cashier and stuff, and
- 26:24Speaker 1: this happens to every shop from luxury.
- 26:27Speaker 1: Bags to Harvey Norman to hawker centers. Wow, wow. At
- 26:30Speaker 1: least she's consistent. I have to say. OK, we're going
- 26:32Speaker 1: to head to the phone lines now. 669-119-87. We have
- 26:36Speaker 1: Rayyan on the line. Not to make things awkward since you're,
- 26:39Speaker 1: you sound like you're in the car with your dad
- 26:41Speaker 1: right now, but where is the place or a thing
- 26:43Speaker 1: that you will not do with your parents? Halloween Horror Nights.
- 26:46Speaker 1: You don't want to go to Halloween Horror Nights with them. Yeah,
- 26:49Speaker 1: why not? Because my mom is scared and she'll push
- 26:52Speaker 1: me in front.
- 26:54Speaker 1: Hold on, that sounds kind of like what Joakim does
- 26:57Speaker 1: to me. He uses me as a human shield to
- 27:00Speaker 1: protect himself. Ray, what about your dad? I'm the one
- 27:03Speaker 1: who always has to go in front la.
- 27:06Speaker 1: Poor thing. You're, you're the actual human shield for the
- 27:10Speaker 1: entire family, sir. There we go. 100%. Thank you so
- 27:13Speaker 1: much for your call, Rayyan. You have a great day, OK?
- 27:15Speaker 1: We're talking about the places or maybe activities that you
- 27:18Speaker 1: will not bring your parents to. Couple of funny responses
- 27:21Speaker 1: coming through right now. One coming in from Dira on WhatsApp. Morning, Sojo.
- 27:26Speaker 1: My sisters, my brother-in-laws, and I have agreed to not
- 27:29Speaker 1: have my mom near the TV whenever we watch a
- 27:32Speaker 1: football game.
- 27:33Speaker 1: Because she will cheer for any team that is scoring
- 27:35Speaker 1: or scored. Every match we had to tell her, Wrong team, Ma,
- 27:39Speaker 1: wrong team. Worst, when my 14-year-old nephew joins us, we
- 27:43Speaker 1: are Manchester United, except him. He is a Man City supporter. Hey,
- 27:47Speaker 1: like me. So when these two teams meet, it is disastrous.
- 27:51Speaker 1: She will ditch her daughters and her sons-in-laws and her
- 27:53Speaker 1: husband and support my nephew. What a true grandma. Oh wow,
- 27:57Speaker 1: that's cute. That's really sweet. That's.
- 28:00Speaker 1: OK, another one coming in from Nick. Morning, Sojo. Happy Tuesday.
- 28:04Speaker 1: I would not watch a football match with my mom
- 28:06Speaker 1: as well, either live at the stadium or on the TV.
- 28:10Speaker 1: Once my mom joined me for a match on TV,
- 28:12Speaker 1: a man chased me at a game, which we didn't
- 28:15Speaker 1: play well. I was cursing and swearing. Then I got
- 28:17Speaker 1: my mom's nagging throughout the match. Wait, so this brings
- 28:21Speaker 1: me to my next question. Do you swear in front
- 28:22Speaker 1: of your mom or your dad? You do, right? But
- 28:25Speaker 1: does she scold you for it?
- 28:27Speaker 1: With my dad, my dad's chill. He'd be like, Son,
- 28:31Speaker 1: calm down. OK. My mom is, What do you say?
- 28:35Speaker 1: What if you're saying it in jest? Like it's like
- 28:38Speaker 1: a joke like you're laughing about something. Can really cannot
- 28:41Speaker 1: stop it. I cannot. One day you say on radio,
- 28:45Speaker 1: then you know.
- 28:47Speaker 1: Well, I've had nightmares that we did that before, but
- 28:49Speaker 1: it never happened to us. Thankfully, red light comes on
- 28:51Speaker 1: automatic mode. Yeah, autopilot, not to say that. Yeah. Um,
- 28:57Speaker 1: here's a, I don't know if I should be saying this,
- 28:59Speaker 1: but I actually sometimes might drop a couple of bad
- 29:03Speaker 1: words in front of my folks and they also just
- 29:05Speaker 1: kind of go along with
- 29:06Speaker 1: it.
- 29:07Speaker 1: Sorry, parenting 101. I'm a girl, I'm an adult, OK, already.
- 29:12Speaker 1: I can imagine your dad giving one of two reactions. One,
- 29:15Speaker 1: he goes along with the flow with you. Or two, like, Sonia. No,
- 29:18Speaker 1: he always goes along with the flow. That's that's, that's.
- 29:22Speaker 1: Then my mom drops some bad word as well. Then
- 29:25Speaker 1: he scolds my mom.
- 29:28Speaker 1: Double standard, right? Carol, what kind of example are you setting?
- 29:31Speaker 1: Then when I swear it's OK. Your mom was like, Hey,
- 29:34Speaker 1: how come she can she can? Yeah, who's the kid here? OK,
- 29:38Speaker 1: we're talking about, um, whether or not there are places
- 29:42Speaker 1: or activities that you will not bring your parents to. Yeah,
- 29:44Speaker 1: I mean earlier I shared about how.
- 29:47Speaker 1: I mean, this one I have no regrets, but also
- 29:50Speaker 1: it was a little bit awkward and uncomfortable at first
- 29:52Speaker 1: by looking at how my mom laughed out loud at
- 29:54Speaker 1: the Kumar show. Oh yes, yes, yes I was very happy.
- 29:56Speaker 1: What was the rating on that show? Like it was
- 29:58Speaker 1: more of like the type of jokes, is it? I
- 30:00Speaker 1: think there was an NC or was it an M18 show,
- 30:03Speaker 1: but it's Kumar. I mean, only one of Singapore's.
- 30:06Speaker 1: Uh, treasures here and my mom's favorite comedian here in Singapore.
- 30:10Speaker 1: So there we go. Yeah, OK, so for me, I
- 30:13Speaker 1: think for my dad and I, like he's quite a
- 30:18Speaker 1: cool guy. So like I mentioned to you before, right,
- 30:20Speaker 1: when I turned 18, he was like the only dad
- 30:24Speaker 1: in my group of friends that opened a table at
- 30:27Speaker 1: the club and he ordered like 3 bottles for us. So,
- 30:32Speaker 1: Whenever my parents sort of like question me about why
- 30:35Speaker 1: I like to party so much, I'm like, because you
- 30:37Speaker 1: brought me up this way.
- 30:40Speaker 1: Blame them. Yes, that is really how it was like.
- 30:43Speaker 1: Have you all seen what you created? But yeah, your
- 30:46Speaker 1: dad's the kind of where, for example, if I do
- 30:48Speaker 1: have a girl in the future.
- 30:49Speaker 1: And she turns 18. I might also open for her. Yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 1: I also want to say on text hello to Prabhu.
- 30:56Speaker 1: Prabhu says hello again, guys. It's not where I won't
- 30:59Speaker 1: bring my parents. In my case, it's where I won't
- 31:01Speaker 1: follow them, mostly for family events. They take hours to
- 31:05Speaker 1: get ready and dress for the event. We usually leave
- 31:07Speaker 1: home at the time we're expected to be at the
- 31:09Speaker 1: event and saying goodbye is at the.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Longest. It comes in multiple stages. At the event itself,
- 31:14Speaker 1: they will take 15 to 20 minutes. At the entrance
- 31:17Speaker 1: or exit, it will take 20 more minutes. At the
- 31:20Speaker 1: car park, they'll take 30 more minutes. And then mom
- 31:23Speaker 1: will continue talking to friends and relatives on the phone
- 31:26Speaker 1: while Dad or me is driving. Oh my gosh, OK, well, that's,
- 31:29Speaker 1: that sounds draining, and he gives a very cute hashtag
- 31:32Speaker 1: Indian family.
- 31:34Speaker 1: Asian families lah, quite similar, similar. We've got Stella on
- 31:37Speaker 1: the line as well. Stella, what about you? Uh,
- 31:40Speaker 2: I wouldn't take my parents to a fine dining restaurant. Why? Yeah,
- 31:46Speaker 2: date my dad says that it's a, it's fine dining
- 31:48Speaker 2: is a scam business.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Dude, OK, here's the thing, I can imagine our parents'
- 31:55Speaker 1: generation saying that though. I can't imagine. Why, why, what happened?
- 31:59Speaker 1: Tell us about the time you brought in there.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Well, so the thing is that I bring my parents
- 32:03Speaker 2: to a lot of, uh, different, different restaurants to try
- 32:06Speaker 2: out different cuisines. So they've had.
- 32:07Speaker 2: Spanish, Mexican, Japanese, and they are usually quite happy to
- 32:11Speaker 2: do so. So I thought, you know, you know, let's,
- 32:14Speaker 2: let's try this new Michelin star place a couple of
- 32:17Speaker 2: years back. And then they were just, my dad was
- 32:20Speaker 2: just so shocked by the portion that was coming.
- 32:23Speaker 2: And then he was, he kept thinking that that was
- 32:25Speaker 2: just the appetizer, the appetizer, the appetizer. So, you know, like, it,
- 32:29Speaker 2: it just didn't work out and he kept complaining and
- 32:32Speaker 2: saying that I could have gotten this for $5 and
- 32:35Speaker 2: this is like 50 cents for the meat at the supermarket.
- 32:38Speaker 2: So he was, he was not too pleased with the portions.
- 32:42Speaker 1: Oh, I mean, OK, how did that make you feel though,
- 32:45Speaker 1: because I think, you know, you had good intentions, right?
- 32:47Speaker 1: You wanted them to experience something different and something nice.
- 32:52Speaker 2: I mean, I was annoyed when I was there, but
- 32:56Speaker 2: on hindsight, you know, they, they seem pretty open to
- 32:59Speaker 2: different things. So I just guess it's just not fine dining.
- 33:04Speaker 1: I, I remember bringing my mom to an Oakase restaurant,
- 33:08Speaker 1: I actually gave her a full brief. Like, OK, so
- 33:11Speaker 1: this is an Oakase restaurant where it's like a premium
- 33:14Speaker 1: sushi grade, but they will serve you very small portions,
- 33:17Speaker 1: and I actually showed her the pictures of how the
- 33:19Speaker 1: dish looks. So at least she won't.
- 33:22Speaker 1: Be outright with with the comments, right? No, but, but
- 33:24Speaker 1: you see, is still OK because it's all sushi. It's
- 33:27Speaker 1: a lot of sushi. So you will get full quite,
- 33:31Speaker 1: quite soon, you know, like I don't know, 56 courses
- 33:33Speaker 1: and you might start to feel it. the first few
- 33:35Speaker 1: dishes that arrived, she was like very small, but the, oh,
- 33:39Speaker 1: I'm very full. I'm very full.
- 33:42Speaker 1: Thank you so much for sharing, Stella. So where's dinner
- 33:45Speaker 1: with your family this weekend? Sorry, where is dinner with
- 33:48Speaker 1: your family this weekend? Which, uh, hawker center or which
- 33:51Speaker 1: Seafood one time.
- 33:55Speaker 2: Well, now, now I have little kids, so usually at home.
- 33:59Speaker 1: At home, OK, nice, nice. Thank you so much for sharing, Stella.
- 34:02Speaker 1: You have a great day. Thank you.
- 34:03Speaker 2: Bye.
- 34:04Speaker 1: Bye-bye. So like I mentioned earlier, some food-related news, and
- 34:07Speaker 1: it is actually regarding someone that you know. OK, do
- 34:10Speaker 1: I sing this happily or sadly? Yeah, you know, I,
- 34:13Speaker 1: I think that there's a silver lining. It's not completely gone. 123, news,
- 34:19Speaker 1: news like.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Again, you know, Sonia with the neither here nor there news.
- 34:24Speaker 1: Tell us. No, no, no. OK, look, I think in
- 34:26Speaker 1: this day and age, we are kind of concerned that
- 34:29Speaker 1: people don't have longevity when it comes to F&B, right,
- 34:34Speaker 1: because of many different factors and issues, you know, rising
- 34:37Speaker 1: costs and everything, and sometimes they can't find someone to
- 34:39Speaker 1: take over their business either. But I'm focusing on this
- 34:42Speaker 1: Nasi Padang stall in Tampines by ex-Singapore goalie Hassan Sanni.
- 34:49Speaker 1: What is bro up to? Yes, Hassan Sonny, what up
- 34:52Speaker 1: my man? So the place, the store is actually called
- 34:54Speaker 1: Dap Hassan. I'm saying it right. Am I saying it correct?
- 34:57Speaker 1: It went viral among our friends from China because of
- 35:01Speaker 1: Hassan's heroics, one of the games. I forgot who it was.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Was it Japan or another team and all the Chinese
- 35:09Speaker 1: fans saying, oh, Hassan is our hero, and they went
- 35:12Speaker 1: down to the store to buy. So honestly, it looks
- 35:16Speaker 1: very good and um, you know.
- 35:18Speaker 1: It's giveniders a lot of joy over the past 6
- 35:21Speaker 1: years that it has been there. But don't worry, even
- 35:24Speaker 1: though he's announced that, yeah, you know, we opened in
- 35:26Speaker 1: 2020 and now we're closing the physical store, um, they
- 35:31Speaker 1: will take a short break and it will resume on
- 35:33Speaker 1: Grab delivery after that. So that's why I say it's
- 35:36Speaker 1: not completely gone. Um, I think it's just the whole
- 35:40Speaker 1: concept of having to run a physical store, actually a
- 35:44Speaker 1: hawker store, right? It's not easy at all.
- 35:48Speaker 1: Closing, like, was it because the rental got too high
- 35:51Speaker 1: or for any other reason? So in Hassan's personal statement,
- 35:54Speaker 1: all he said was, it's been an amazing journey. I'm
- 35:57Speaker 1: really grateful for everyone who has come down to support us. Um,
- 36:01Speaker 1: this place has given us so many memories, but thank
- 36:03Speaker 1: you so much for visiting and we appreciate you so much,
- 36:06Speaker 1: but he did not state any other reason. No other reason. Yeah.
- 36:10Speaker 1: Probably if I had to hazard a guess, it's very
- 36:13Speaker 1: hard work. Firstly, very hard work. He's in his 40s now.
- 36:17Speaker 1: Maybe he just wants to take a little bit.
- 36:18Speaker 1: Bit of a breather or not push himself so hard,
- 36:21Speaker 1: you know. And by the way, I stand corrected, it
- 36:23Speaker 1: wasn't against Japan. His heroics was against Thailand, OK, which
- 36:27Speaker 1: allowed China to advance to the next qualifying tournament for
- 36:30Speaker 1: the 2026 World Cup. Yeah, there you go. Well, thank
- 36:33Speaker 1: you for the memories. Our very own President also visited before.
- 36:39Speaker 1: I believe he, uh, you know, had very good things
- 36:40Speaker 1: to say about it. So we're awaiting the reappearance on
- 36:44Speaker 1: Grab delivery very soon. We are live on TikTok right
- 36:46Speaker 1: now because.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Something truly exciting has kicked off just yesterday officially. If
- 36:52Speaker 1: you're over at Marina Bay Sands, you would have seen
- 36:54Speaker 1: maybe say a crowd and a spaceport looking area. Just
- 36:58Speaker 1: so you know, it was done in collaboration with our
- 37:00Speaker 1: friend Lewis Hamilton. I say our friend, but you met him.
- 37:03Speaker 1: You met him, and one of our very own, always
- 37:07Speaker 1: a proud moment whenever a Singaporean makes the headlines on
- 37:11Speaker 1: news overseas. We have him in the studio. Please give
- 37:14Speaker 1: it up for celebrated contemporary artist, Jayhan Low in the studio.
- 37:19Speaker 1: Morning. Morning. Are you awake yet? Are you good? Yeah,
- 37:24Speaker 1: he's chill. He's like taking in all the energy and
- 37:26Speaker 1: all the love. Hey, Jen, I mean yesterday must have
- 37:29Speaker 1: been a huge day for you. We saw so much
- 37:32Speaker 1: coverage on like all your different platforms, magazines, you know,
- 37:35Speaker 1: social media platforms and all that also.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Um, how was it like when you first got the
- 37:40Speaker 1: news that this collaboration was going to happen? Was it
- 37:42Speaker 1: like surreal for you? it's a it's real. You couldn't tell.
- 37:50Speaker 1: But do you actually follow Formula One as well? Yeah,
- 37:52Speaker 1: I do. Oh, and I'm guessing you're a Hamilton fan.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Did you get to, I mean, it's OK if you
- 37:59Speaker 1: can't say it live on air. Did you get to
- 38:00Speaker 1: speak with him at all or his team or his team,
- 38:05Speaker 1: you know, to him because we're in different time zones
- 38:08Speaker 1: and you know, he's flying around all the time. Yeah, yeah, true. So,
- 38:11Speaker 1: you know, it was a crazy process. OK. And it
- 38:14Speaker 1: went on for how long? How many months? We started
- 38:16Speaker 1: actually in June. So we confirmed all the details in June.
- 38:20Speaker 1: So to put everything up, I think even his team
- 38:22Speaker 1: works at F1.
- 38:25Speaker 1: Super, super speed, yeah, I mean something that maybe we
- 38:27Speaker 1: Singaporeans could be quite used to like how fast we
- 38:30Speaker 1: work and how fast we do things, but, OK, before
- 38:32Speaker 1: we touch more on the +44 collaboration.
- 38:35Speaker 1: As a contemporary artist here in Singapore and for people
- 38:39Speaker 1: who might not be familiar with your journey, do you
- 38:41Speaker 1: want to walk us through how all this began for
- 38:43Speaker 1: you because I'm looking at your page and it mentions Lasalle,
- 38:46Speaker 1: it mentions a scholarship. Do you wanna walk us through
- 38:48Speaker 1: the whole journey? Um, I think I always liked drawing
- 38:51Speaker 1: since I was a kid. So even in kindergarten, I
- 38:54Speaker 1: was scribbling on the walls.
- 38:55Speaker 1: So pretty much like, you know, uh, I'm turning 50
- 38:59Speaker 1: this year, choosing a career in art. I can't tell
- 39:04Speaker 1: so much younger. Thank you. But yeah, but choosing art
- 39:08Speaker 1: was a a a very different path compared to all
- 39:11Speaker 1: my friends. So, you know, I gave up my mainstream
- 39:14Speaker 1: education and I dropped out pretty much to pursue art.
- 39:17Speaker 1: Everyone thought I was mad. So in order to keep
- 39:20Speaker 1: it going, I had to look for a scholarship to,
- 39:23Speaker 1: you know, to just push it forward, but
- 39:25Speaker 1: You know, my life is constantly, you know, unstable, so
- 39:29Speaker 1: I broke my bond and I moved to Taiwan for
- 39:31Speaker 1: 10 years. So, you know, there I did a lot
- 39:35Speaker 1: of fun stuff like, you know, music video, ah, CD
- 39:38Speaker 1: covers back then. And, you know, my calling was to art,
- 39:42Speaker 1: so I had an agency there. So at night, I
- 39:45Speaker 1: started painting and, you know, I did 2 years without
- 39:47Speaker 1: any real occupation and just painting.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Hm. So do you think that the whole perception of
- 39:54Speaker 1: art and pursuing it as a career has changed a lot,
- 39:57Speaker 1: like now in this day and age? Because I think
- 39:59Speaker 1: even when Joakim and I back then when we, for example,
- 40:01Speaker 1: when I chose to go to poly, it was still
- 40:04Speaker 1: considered like unconventional to pursue media, you know.
- 40:07Speaker 1: Do you think it has changed over the years? I
- 40:09Speaker 1: think it's changed a lot. Our art scene is very
- 40:11Speaker 1: supportive now and I see a lot of like young talents,
- 40:13Speaker 1: you know, like coming up from Singapore. And everyone is actually,
- 40:18Speaker 1: you know, going beyond our shores and basically expanding overseas.
- 40:22Speaker 1: So it's really nice to look at.
- 40:25Speaker 1: I was gonna say one of the other visual artists
- 40:27Speaker 1: that I know of who's probably around our age, Sonia,
- 40:31Speaker 1: Tobi Ato. Oh, shout out to him. So, let's go
- 40:35Speaker 1: to the +44 collaboration. Where did you draw all the
- 40:39Speaker 1: inspiration from and how many sleepless nights before you decided, OK,
- 40:43Speaker 1: this is the one I'm going to send to his team,
- 40:45Speaker 1: and they approved it.
- 40:46Speaker 1: Uh, I've always been a huge sci-fi fan and I
- 40:49Speaker 1: always thought that F1 is very related to sci-fi. So
- 40:53Speaker 1: anyone who could fly a rocket ship or spaceship would
- 40:56Speaker 1: be an F1 driver like Lewis. So, you know, I
- 40:58Speaker 1: incorporated a lot of stuff like fire, like the galaxy,
- 41:02Speaker 1: and basically did a theme around it like my ongoing, ah,
- 41:07Speaker 1: Uh, topic about the Spaceman and using clouds and fumes
- 41:11Speaker 1: from F1, creating a pattern and a camouflage. So for
- 41:16Speaker 1: those people who have discovered the concept of, how would
- 41:20Speaker 1: you describe it to them?
- 41:23Speaker 1: Um, I think a lot of my old classmates call
- 41:25Speaker 1: me a spaceman because I was always like spacing out
- 41:28Speaker 1: in class. Yeah, so it's my alter ego for a
- 41:32Speaker 1: long time and eventually I thought like the spaceman represents
- 41:36Speaker 1: all of us, you know, we are moving from, uh,
- 41:39Speaker 1: you know, our current culture to different cultures when we travel.
- 41:42Speaker 1: And, you know, again, like I believe that in the future,
- 41:46Speaker 1: everyone will be a spaceman, just like everyone flies now.
- 41:49Speaker 1: So maybe, you know, we'll meet each other for lunch
- 41:52Speaker 1: on the moon. So we'll all be traveling intergalactic style.
- 41:56Speaker 1: You see the smile on his face when he's saying
- 41:57Speaker 1: that I I hope that happens. Yeah, 100% lunch on
- 42:01Speaker 1: the moon, that will be a sight. Still with Jan
- 42:04Speaker 1: Low here in the studio. Yeah, so all this to
- 42:06Speaker 1: celebrate the +44 Marina Spaceport.
- 42:10Speaker 1: It's available from now till 11th of October at the shops,
- 42:13Speaker 1: and it's just opposite Yardburn Southern Table and Bar. But OK, disclaimer, yeah, we,
- 42:19Speaker 1: we're saying this, but there's no promise Hamilton will be
- 42:21Speaker 1: there himself. OK, I don't think so. Don't show up
- 42:23Speaker 1: like here. No, no, no, no such thing unless he
- 42:26Speaker 1: announces it or something like that or something special. But,
- 42:29Speaker 1: but Jayhan, being one of the first, or rather even
- 42:31Speaker 1: the first Southeast Asian artist to be able to do this,
- 42:34Speaker 1: how do you think that puts us on the map,
- 42:36Speaker 1: you know, I think it's a big year for Singapore.
- 42:38Speaker 1: Anything that you want to say?
- 42:40Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I'm I'm happy like Singapore's up there
- 42:43Speaker 1: with New York, Tokyo, London, Paris. So, you know, we're
- 42:46Speaker 1: a destination that people like to come. Yeah. And what
- 42:51Speaker 1: do you think about Singapore, in your opinion? I think
- 42:54Speaker 1: we're coming of age and, you know, I think, uh, music, arts, movies,
- 42:59Speaker 1: like you said, we're we're getting there. Yeah, right. Can
- 43:03Speaker 1: I ask what is your favorite piece from the capsule collection?
- 43:06Speaker 1: If you had to recommend us to get one.
- 43:09Speaker 1: I, you know, I'm torn because I like, like how
- 43:12Speaker 1: a lot of the, the merchandise was translated from the design.
- 43:16Speaker 1: So his team did a great job and I think
- 43:18Speaker 1: Lewis was pretty much, you know, looking through everything and
- 43:22Speaker 1: everything has to pass through his, of course. Yeah, I think, yeah,
- 43:29Speaker 1: so I would say maybe like the I I like
- 43:33Speaker 1: uh Dry fit, so all the jerseys are pretty cool,
- 43:36Speaker 1: especially for our climate.
- 43:38Speaker 1: Yeah, honestly, I think we are gonna love it. OK,
- 43:41Speaker 1: so another question is whether he can answer this question. Uh,
- 43:47Speaker 1: you know how every time whenever the Formula One drivers
- 43:49Speaker 1: appear in the paddock they'll be wearing their own fits
- 43:51Speaker 1: before they change the team's official jerseys, right? Will be
- 43:54Speaker 1: wearing the capsule collection by any chance? Can you answer?
- 43:57Speaker 1: I hope so.
- 43:58Speaker 1: Maybe he will incorporate it because he likes to like
- 44:00Speaker 1: put together. I'm looking at the hoodies and and the material.
- 44:07Speaker 1: Our bro will be perspiring, but I'm very sure you
- 44:09Speaker 1: look very good because it's Lewis Hamilton. Yeah, 100%. OK,
- 44:13Speaker 1: so what's what's on for you after this, after this
- 44:16Speaker 1: collaboration and everything? Anything else that you can say that
- 44:18Speaker 1: you're working on or you have your eyes set on?
- 44:21Speaker 1: I'm having a show in Taipei in December and then
- 44:25Speaker 1: preparing for next year.
- 44:27Speaker 1: Hm. And I believe that we can also take a
- 44:29Speaker 1: peek behind the process of how you develop this over
- 44:33Speaker 1: at the exhibit, right? Oh, there's an exhibition that's happening
- 44:37Speaker 1: this week. It's like behind the scenes, like, you know,
- 44:40Speaker 1: how everything was done building up to the collection.
- 44:44Speaker 1: And where can we catch that? At Tanjong Pagar District Park. Nice.
- 44:48Speaker 1: And if people want to follow you on social media
- 44:50Speaker 1: or follow your journey, you want to give us your
- 44:52Speaker 1: social handle, even though he and social media. Yeah, but
- 44:56Speaker 1: you know what, the talent that he has deserves to
- 44:58Speaker 1: be celebrated. So please tell us about your social. Get
- 45:00Speaker 1: a team, yeah. My social, I use Instagram. I have
- 45:04Speaker 1: a TikTok account or Little Red Book, but I'm not
- 45:07Speaker 1: very active on that. No worries about it. Time to
- 45:10Speaker 1: engage someone to do it.
- 45:12Speaker 1: OK, thank you so much for being here with us.
- 45:14Speaker 1: Is there anything else you want to share with, you know,
- 45:16Speaker 1: your supporters or people that just discovered you before we
- 45:19Speaker 1: let you go? I grew up with 987, so on
- 45:21Speaker 1: your first time on 987. Wow. 987. I mean, the
- 45:31Speaker 1: DJs that Jay listen to are probably all the legends
- 45:33Speaker 1: in the industry right now if you ask me. They
- 45:35Speaker 1: might still be around.
- 45:37Speaker 1: We're still here. I'm very sure a few days ago
- 45:40Speaker 1: you have seen the news how Singapore is a super
- 45:42Speaker 1: aged society. Oh no, and, and in a very sad
- 45:46Speaker 1: note or like sometimes when I read about our elderly
- 45:49Speaker 1: passing away alone in their houses and they only discovered
- 45:53Speaker 1: like 2 or 3 days later, it breaks my heart
- 45:55Speaker 1: and I really hope that you can give your mom,
- 45:58Speaker 1: your dad, your grandma, grandpa a big hug today.
- 46:01Speaker 1: But this one deserves to make the news and I
- 46:03Speaker 1: think we should share about it on how the PAP
- 46:06Speaker 1: seniors group volunteers, they will befriend lonely elderly people in
- 46:11Speaker 1: 9 estates in Singapore. I love that as a start
- 46:14Speaker 1: of a 1-year pilot. So let's see how it goes,
- 46:17Speaker 1: and I really hope more of our seniors will come
- 46:19Speaker 1: out and be active and we can have more communities
- 46:21Speaker 1: to look out for one another. So, so occasionally I
- 46:24Speaker 1: will volunteer with this group called Apex and their primary
- 46:28Speaker 1: objective is to bring
- 46:30Speaker 1: Um, essential food items to elderly who are living alone, OK?
- 46:33Speaker 1: But at the same time, when sometimes I go deliver
- 46:36Speaker 1: the food to them, I think all they want is
- 46:38Speaker 1: to have a conversation. They just want to chat because they,
- 46:41Speaker 1: they are lonely, they don't have anyone. Um, I forgot
- 46:44Speaker 1: her name, but there was this auntie, OK. She's, she
- 46:47Speaker 1: speaks primarily Hokkien, and you know, I'm supposed to be
- 46:50Speaker 1: Hokkien by association, my dad's side, right?
- 46:53Speaker 1: I can make it through a few words, but the
- 46:56Speaker 1: auntie starts talking and like being very animated. Then I
- 46:59Speaker 1: wish I could continue the convo, you know. That's why
- 47:02Speaker 1: I say some of our seniors, they want to be heard.
- 47:04Speaker 1: So I hope people in these volunteer groups, and I'm
- 47:07Speaker 1: sure there are many as well, they're able to speak dialect.
- 47:09Speaker 1: They have people who can speak dialect fluently, so at
- 47:12Speaker 1: least they can converse and the elderly will feel heard
- 47:15Speaker 1: and they get so happy telling their stories. Like what's
- 47:17Speaker 1: that TikToker that TikTok, yes, yes, we love you we
- 47:21Speaker 1: love your content, you're great.
- 47:24Speaker 1: Honestly, um, we should all pick it up as well
- 47:26Speaker 1: just to communicate better. Had such a good laugh. If
- 47:28Speaker 1: you want to catch up with all the best conversations
- 47:31Speaker 1: and the best bits of our show, we listen and Spotify,
- 47:33Speaker 1: the place to be. And I think for today, tomorrow
- 47:35Speaker 1: and Thursday, it's your favorite Formula One driver day. True.
- 47:39Speaker 1: Oh wait, so Joakim and I, um, will be taking
- 47:42Speaker 1: turns on the show. So tomorrow I'm not here. OK.
- 47:44Speaker 1: And then on Thursday, Joakim's not here. Hang on, I'm
- 47:47Speaker 1: taking notes. So tomorrow, where will you be and what
- 47:50Speaker 1: time is a good time? Tell us. Let me just,
- 47:51Speaker 1: let me.
- 47:51Speaker 1: Just put it out there, OK? So, Charlot Claire is
- 47:54Speaker 1: gonna be at Puma 313 Somerset. This will be in
- 47:57Speaker 1: the afternoon. So we will be, by the way, we
- 48:00Speaker 1: will be live streaming the whole day on Puma's, um,
- 48:03Speaker 1: TikTok account. So in case, um, you're unable to be there,
- 48:08Speaker 1: or maybe you are there, but you're quite far away
- 48:10Speaker 1: from the action, you can still follow what's going on
- 48:12Speaker 1: because there's going to be a camera following us like
- 48:14Speaker 1: every step of the way. Yeah, so that's happening in
- 48:17Speaker 1: the afternoon. I would say standby to be.
- 48:19Speaker 1: there about like 12-1, OK, for his arrival. If you
- 48:24Speaker 1: want to be early, um, I think some people actually
- 48:26Speaker 1: go before the mall even opens. I'm taking notes because
- 48:29Speaker 1: I want to make sure I give the correct infoclerc
- 48:31Speaker 1: and Norris Lando Norris is gonna be, now it's already
- 48:35Speaker 1: fully announced the location. It will be at Puma Vivo City.
- 48:39Speaker 1: So make sure that you catch him there if you're
- 48:41Speaker 1: a papaya fan, please, uh, show up. And I think
- 48:45Speaker 1: this is, this is the first time.
- 48:48Speaker 1: That he's gonna be making an appearance in Puma, Singapore,
- 48:52Speaker 1: with Puma, Singapore rather. Is there a time you can
- 48:54Speaker 1: give us, or is it so I think standby from
- 48:58Speaker 1: about 44 p.m. onwards. OK, 4 p.m. So you got
- 49:04Speaker 1: Charles Leclerc from 121, Lando Norris from 4 p.m. onwards,
- 49:07Speaker 1: and after you're done with that, uh, come to RWS.
- 49:10Speaker 1: There's Avid Limblatt and Liam Lawson. Wait, is it tomorrow
- 49:12Speaker 1: night as well?
- 49:13Speaker 1: Tomorrow 7. Tomorrow, yeah. Also, basically, it's back to back.
- 49:18Speaker 1: There's everything going on in the next couple of days.
