- 0:00Hey, you guys, it's friendly. Welcome back to the podcast.
- 0:04I'm really glad you're here today.
- 0:05Happy Thursday. Today we are continuing in
- 0:09Second Thessalonians, and today's passage, because we
- 0:12broke it up, is actually just two verses.
- 0:16But I don't want the length to fool you guys.
- 0:18These verses are so powerful, and I do think sometimes the
- 0:23shorter passages are the ones that deserve the slowest
- 0:26reflection. So today, because it is shorter,
- 0:30I want to do something a little different.
- 0:32I'm going to read them over you in two different translations.
- 0:35First, I'm going to do the NIV because that is what my physical
- 0:39Bible is. But then I also want to read the
- 0:41Passion translation because I think it also just help us
- 0:45consider these verses in different language, and it can
- 0:49also resonate in different ways. So as you listen, I want to
- 0:53encourage you, don't rush past it.
- 0:56Let these words really sink in. Ask God to reveal something
- 1:01fresh to you through these verses today, even if you've
- 1:04read them before. Scripture is living and active
- 1:07as it says in the Word. And the Lord loves to highlight
- 1:10new things to us when we slow down and when we listen.
- 1:14So we're going to be in chapter 1 and reading through verses 11
- 1:17through 12. First, the NIV.
- 1:21With this in mind, we constantly pray for you that our God may
- 1:25make you worthy of His calling and that by His power He may
- 1:29bring to fruition your every desire for goodness and your
- 1:33every deed prompted by faith. We pray this so that the name of
- 1:38our Lord Jesus may be glorified in you and you and him according
- 1:43to the grace of our God and the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 1:47OK, now let's do passion translation.
- 1:52Because of this, we constantly pray for you that our God will
- 1:56make you worthy of the calling He has given you, and with
- 2:00divine power He will fulfill your every righteous desire and
- 2:04every act prompted by your faith.
- 2:08By accomplishing this work in you.
- 2:10The name of our Lord Jesus will be glorified in you, and you
- 2:14will be glorified in him by the marvellous grace of our God and
- 2:18the Lord Jesus Christ. So good.
- 2:22OK, so first of all, this passage I'm going to read
- 2:28through the NIV, like that kind of translation because that's
- 2:31what my physical Bible was. But it begins with with this in
- 2:35mind. That phrase connects directly to
- 2:37what Paul said right before this, that believers will share
- 2:41in the glory of Christ when he returns.
- 2:44And he says this includes you because you believed our
- 2:48testimony. So these verses are directed
- 2:51toward believers, toward people who claim to follow Jesus.
- 2:55And that's important because salvation is not meant to be the
- 2:58finish line of faith. It's actually the starting
- 3:01point. If you think back to the prayer
- 3:04of salvation, if you're a believer, it's sometimes called
- 3:08the sinner's prayer, that thing that you said, it is a prompting
- 3:12into a whole new life because yes, it saves you, but it
- 3:16doesn't just stop there. And I think in a world of a lot
- 3:21of cultural Christianity, a lot of people do stop there because
- 3:26they're comfortable. They want heaven, they want to
- 3:29be saved from hell, but they don't necessarily want the
- 3:32lifelong process of becoming more like Jesus, denying your
- 3:36flesh and committing to that. But Paul reminds us here that we
- 3:41do have a calling. Romans 829.
- 3:45It says for those God foreknew, he also predestined to be
- 3:50conformed to the image of his Son.
- 3:53That means that it is ongoing and it is a process.
- 3:58This is what the Bible calls sanctification, which this word
- 4:02used to be one that kind of intimidated me.
- 4:05It sounds super theological and kind of complicated, but really
- 4:10it's pretty simple because it just means the process of
- 4:13becoming more like Jesus and one day that process will be
- 4:18complete. We see in first John 32 that it
- 4:23says we know that when Christ appears we shall be like him,
- 4:28for we shall see him as he is. And Philippians 3 verse 20 says
- 4:35Jesus will transform our lowly bodies to be like his glorious
- 4:38body. So y'all, that's our ultimate
- 4:41calling. But until then, we are in the
- 4:44process of becoming. And Paul also says he is
- 4:49constantly praying for believers to be made worthy.
- 4:53Notice the wording constantly praying.
- 4:58This implies it's not a one time prayer.
- 5:01It's continual. It's repeated.
- 5:04And this is something that we need to be praying over
- 5:07ourselves and over others daily. Here's something though that's
- 5:12super important. Paul says that this happens by
- 5:16God's power, not our own effort, not our own strength.
- 5:21And this is where the concept of grace just rushes in.
- 5:26I want us to think about this. You did not earn your salvation
- 5:30right if you truly believe it is by grace through faith.
- 5:35So you did not work for it. You did not even deserve it.
- 5:39You simply said, I want to be saved.
- 5:42And you received salvation when you believed.
- 5:46So why do we sometimes act like we have to strive to keep it?
- 5:52God's grace started the work, and it is by God's power that he
- 5:58continues the work in us. Our role is the posture of the
- 6:03heart. Paul says that God fulfills
- 6:06every desire for goodness and every deed prompted by faith.
- 6:11I read the Aramaic translation and it's actually really cool.
- 6:14I want to read it for y'all. It says by his power he will
- 6:18fulfill your every resolve for goodness and works of faith.
- 6:23In other words, our actions do matter.
- 6:27Your work meaning how you live your day-to-day life through the
- 6:31way you speak, how you treat people, serve people, love
- 6:36others, how you just move throughout the world.
- 6:39Is your desire for goodness carried out?
- 6:43And honestly, I think this is where our society sometimes can
- 6:46get apathetic because we like the idea of goodness.
- 6:51I don't think it's hard to want to do the right thing to have
- 6:56that desire. We like the idea of faith, but a
- 7:00lot of the times follow through is what is missing.
- 7:04Paul is reminding believers that our faith should actually
- 7:08produce something, not empty talk, not just words.
- 7:13And we all, I'm pretty sure, probably know someone who may
- 7:17say a lot of things, but they don't really follow through with
- 7:20their actions. And they can make those
- 7:23friendships and relationships difficult because you never know
- 7:27if they're actually going to commit.
- 7:29But God is looking for followers who are devoted, who are all in
- 7:33and fully surrendered. A lot of people say that they
- 7:38want to be used by God, but they're not truly willing to
- 7:41commit to living in a way that actually allows Him to use them.
- 7:47And when we truly live by God's power, by God's grace, something
- 7:53supernatural happens. You can't fake it.
- 7:56You can't fake spiritual transformation.
- 8:00I was re listening to a podcast yesterday and the pastor in it
- 8:04said you cannot fake countenance.
- 8:07That stuck with me. Psalm 34 says those who look to
- 8:12the Lord are radiant. They know no shame.
- 8:16That's because real followers of Jesus reflect Him.
- 8:20Their light is not dimmed. It's so clear.
- 8:24And ultimately that is the purpose of all of this.
- 8:27Paul says that the goal is that the name of Jesus would be
- 8:30glorified in US. It says in John 17 verses 22
- 8:36through 23, this is Jesus. It is so intimate, y'all.
- 8:40He is praying in the Garden of Gethsemane before He is betrayed
- 8:44and ultimately goes to the cross, but he prays this to His
- 8:48Father. I have given them the glory that
- 8:51You gave Me, that they may be one as we are one, I and them
- 8:56and You and Me, so that they may be brought to complete unity.
- 9:01Then then the world will know that You sent Me and have loved
- 9:06them even as You have loved me. Guys, he said that the glory the
- 9:12Father gave Him, He is now given to us so that the world may see
- 9:17and believe. That is incredible to think
- 9:21about that God in the flesh is inviting us to share in His
- 9:25glory so that the world can see Him through us.
- 9:29And the whole thing is fueled by grace.
- 9:32Grace is a gift. All we do is receive the grace.
- 9:38So I want to give you all a few reflection questions that I
- 9:41jotted down in my notes that y'all can also think about.
- 9:45What are your motivations? Why do you do what you do every
- 9:50day? Are you trying to prove
- 9:52something to others or is your life aimed at honouring God?
- 9:58What is your work inspired by? Sit with that one for a bit
- 10:02because I don't think it's going to be an immediate answer.
- 10:05I think it's something that you really do need to think about.
- 10:09And also, does your life show the fruit of the Spirit?
- 10:12Does it show it coming to fruition?
- 10:17An increase in love and joy and peace and patience and kindness
- 10:23and goodness and faithfulness and self-control?
- 10:27Is that growing? So with all these things, let's
- 10:31go ahead and close out in prayer.
- 10:34Dear Lord, thank you for the calling that you have placed on
- 10:39our lives as believers. Thank you that salvation is a
- 10:43gift of grace. It's not something that we could
- 10:46ever earn. It's not something that we could
- 10:48ever deserve. But thank you also that You love
- 10:52us too much to just leave us where we began.
- 10:58God, we boldly ask that you would make us worthy of the
- 11:02calling that you have given us. By your power working in us,
- 11:08would you give us a deeper desire for goodness?
- 11:12Let our faith, let it move beyond words into real action,
- 11:17into real obedience. I pray that we would walk the
- 11:21walk, not just talk the talk, search our hearts, reveal our
- 11:27motives. Lord, I pray that everything we
- 11:31do would bring you glory, would exalt the name of Jesus.
- 11:36Lord, let Your light shine through us so that we clearly
- 11:41present to the world You. We receive your grace today
- 11:47freely. As we freely receive it, so we
- 11:50freely give it. Thank you for continuing the
- 11:53work that you once started in us.
- 11:56We ask this all in your name, Jesus.
- 11:58Amen. OK guys.
- 12:00Well, that's where I'm going to close for today's episode.
- 12:03Praying that you can take some things away and reflect on these
- 12:07questions and that the Lord ministers and speaks to your
- 12:10heart. Have a great rest of your day.
