- 0:02Welcome into a very exciting episode of the scene.
- 0:04I am your host, Bubba Starts.
- 0:06And with me today from the Sturgis Chamber of Commerce is Veronica Grossig.
- 0:10Veronica, welcome to the show.
- 0:11Hi.
- 0:12Thanks for having me.
- 0:14It's my pleasure.
- 0:15You're gonna be a busy girl here.
- 0:17Well, you probably already are.
- 0:19Yeah.
- 0:20But, Sturgis is right around the corner.
- 0:23I wanted to give the chamber a chance to talk about some things that, you have going on,
- 0:28obviously, during the week.
- 0:29But we're gonna chat also about what you guys are doing over there year round to promote the
- 0:34city of Sturgis.
- 0:35So, without too much ado, why don't you give us a little bit of your background with the
- 0:39chamber and in Sturgis, and then we'll pick it up from there.
- 0:42Okay.
- 0:43Sure.
- 0:43Well, I've been here at the chamber as the executive director now for going on seven
- 0:49years.
- 0:50And this, for me, is a job that really blends my love of supporting the community and, you
- 0:57putting on events and having music and that type of thing and supporting businesses with
- 1:02just making a living.
- 1:04So for me, it's the best of both worlds, and not many people can say the same thing.
- 1:08But, yeah, I I come from a a background here in Sturgis.
- 1:12My family has a organic farm, Bear Butte Gardens, just northeast of town, and, I've
- 1:18kinda worked in the area and elsewhere before I came to the chamber.
- 1:22And your family are such beautiful people.
- 1:24I I've been working, with with your parents on the old Bicycle and Arts Music Festival way
- 1:30back when.
- 1:31Yeah.
- 1:32Yeah.
- 1:33That was a great time.
- 1:34God.
- 1:34It seemed just a whole lifetime ago, it feels like, sometimes.
- 1:38And, obviously, your brother plays a lot of music around that area as well.
- 1:42Shout out to Mike Grossick.
- 1:44Yep.
- 1:44So, obviously, a a huge supporter of events, music, and sports wise.
- 1:52You talked about the organic farm.
- 1:54You guys are really, really cool people, and I love that you've always taken it upon you as,
- 1:59really, as a whole family to promote the city of Sturgis and what it means outside of Rally.
- 2:06I I think a lot of people obviously know the name because of the motorcycle rally, but,
- 2:12really, you have this thriving community that is always there.
- 2:16It's not just a, you know, one week of the year town.
- 2:20We have this community of artists and artisans that are in the area that you get to promote
- 2:27year round.
- 2:28Yep.
- 2:28Absolutely.
- 2:29Yep.
- 2:29As a chamber of commerce, we support the the bigger business like the Loud American, you
- 2:35know, the new gas monkey here.
- 2:37But we also do the little artisans, like you were saying, the smaller bands.
- 2:41We help them meet the community, meet the businesses, and grow into bigger and better
- 2:46things.
- 2:46So, yeah, we're really lucky to be able to work with all types all types of business people and
- 2:51support all of that.
- 2:53So as executive director, what does your rally week look like?
- 2:58Are you making appearances, or are you pretty much stationed right at the welcome center and
- 3:02being the welcome committee?
- 3:04Yeah.
- 3:04I keep a pretty low profile for sure.
- 3:07Their chamber doesn't organize the rally in an official capacity, but we do run the official
- 3:12welcome center of Sturgis.
- 3:13So our main job is to just greet our guests, make sure they have all the information they
- 3:18need.
- 3:19We're putting together a comprehensive vendor map this year.
- 3:22We are also putting together comprehensive event lists across all venues.
- 3:27So that has been a big undertaking, and all of that will go in a visitor information booklet
- 3:32that we can hand out throughout the week.
- 3:34So we're just really trying to make people's lives easier, make it more organized so that
- 3:38they can have a great time throughout Rally.
- 3:40And then, of course, I love to go out and see music and stuff and check out check out all the
- 3:45fun stuff going on too.
- 3:47Well and I will speak from personal experience.
- 3:49You have a digital version of these comprehensive lists, and that's really how I
- 3:53kinda built the scene project's list of appearances, was I was able to finally go to
- 3:58one and still using the individual venues, you know, lists as well to kinda juxtapose times
- 4:05and different things.
- 4:06But you did a great job of assembling by venue what they had going on each and every day of
- 4:13the rally, and I've never seen anything like that in all of my years of going to the rally
- 4:19and, you know, living out there and experiencing it that there was never one place
- 4:23to go to to say, hey.
- 4:25This day, this is what's happening across the board, and, it's a huge undertaking because
- 4:31there's just so much, especially in the eighty fifth annual this year.
- 4:36Yeah.
- 4:36Absolutely.
- 4:37I also noticed in my years at the chamber, like, where do you where do you go as a visitor
- 4:42to find the information about every venue?
- 4:45How can you see every concert going on in town?
- 4:47And I realized that there really isn't anything.
- 4:49So I was like, well, we're the welcome center.
- 4:51We should do it.
- 4:52So that's how that's how it came about, kind of from personal need, trying to plan out my week
- 4:57like you are and and help our guests.
- 5:00Did you face any challenges, during that process process of assembling this thing, like
- 5:05reaching out to venues?
- 5:07So, you know, was everybody pretty much on board and thinking that this was a great thing,
- 5:10or were there some that were like, No.
- 5:13It's pretty it's pretty easy.
- 5:15We have a great relationship with most of the businesses here town.
- 5:18They're most of them are chamber members, so we interact with them on a regular basis for
- 5:22events throughout the year.
- 5:24Some of them that are a little harder to get get in touch with.
- 5:27I mean, we can just pull stuff off their website if we need to.
- 5:30It doesn't have to be a a drawn out process.
- 5:32You know?
- 5:32We just we grab it when we see it.
- 5:34We put on put it on the list, and and we just have a great relationship with all of them.
- 5:39Yeah.
- 5:39The hardest part is just the initiative.
- 5:41They're like, hey.
- 5:41We're gonna do this.
- 5:43Yeah.
- 5:43It's a lot of elbow grease, a lot of just busy work, punching it all in, double checking it,
- 5:47triple checking it.
- 5:48And then the rally is one of those beasts of an event that it doesn't matter how much you try
- 5:55and prepare for it.
- 5:56It changes day by day.
- 5:57There's so much information and so many vendors that you don't know about till you get here,
- 6:02and that's just its nature.
- 6:03So we're continuing to update things and provide updated information to visitors every
- 6:08single day of the rally.
- 6:10This is the first year that you've done these comprehensive lists?
- 6:14Yep.
- 6:14It is.
- 6:15Yep.
- 6:15So this is a real trial year, so bear with us.
- 6:18We're definitely not gonna have 100%.
- 6:21But, hopefully, after this year, the campgrounds, the venues, the restaurants, the
- 6:25vendors will will see it, and they'll reach out to us to make sure that we have updated
- 6:29information more and more moving forward as well.
- 6:32Yeah.
- 6:32Almost like the official Sturgis magazine is what this is becoming, it seems like.
- 6:37Oh, we we actually do have a year round magazine called five seven seven eight five.
- 6:42So we just published our third year of it.
- 6:45And if you have a chance to check that out, it's got articles about our restaurants, our
- 6:51ranchers, everything going on year round, including rally activities.
- 6:55Fantastic.
- 6:56Well, I had seen the publication, but I didn't realize it was part of the chamber.
- 6:59So how cool.
- 7:01I I love these really awesome initiatives that you're taking.
- 7:05And, really, it's it's not I mean, yes, it is something that you do.
- 7:09You are the chamber.
- 7:10It is your job to promote these businesses, but I feel like you're going really above and
- 7:16beyond to provide something different and something that's necessary.
- 7:21So I really commend you for taking the initiative to do it and putting the elbow
- 7:26grease in to get it done.
- 7:27Oh, thank you.
- 7:28Yeah.
- 7:28It's definitely a labor of love.
- 7:30There's a there's a standard that you could be at as a chamber, but, I mean, we wanna keep
- 7:35pushing that pushing that bar further and further and doing more and more every year to
- 7:40make it a better community.
- 7:42When you're just in such a unique position because Sturgis is what it is, it's not you
- 7:46know, I live in a town of a thousand people.
- 7:48We have a little chamber of commerce as well, but we're never taking on something of the
- 7:54likes of the Sturgis motorcycle rally, which I guess I mean, I'm assuming the estimates for
- 7:59this year's attendance have to have to be breaching a million people this year.
- 8:04Yeah.
- 8:04I I haven't heard any official numbers from the city offices, city hall, but I think it's gonna
- 8:09be a big one.
- 8:10I can say that I went down to see my brother play in the Tyler Bills trio last night at the
- 8:15Loud American, and usually the Monday before the rally, there's some people it's starting to
- 8:20heat up a bit, but it felt like full on rally this year.
- 8:24So I don't know what it's gonna be like next week, but I think it's gonna be big.
- 8:28Well, big shout out to Tyler Bills and and his band as well.
- 8:32Huge fan.
- 8:33I think we're probably gonna end up running into each other while I'm in Sturgis just
- 8:37because we have similar taste in music.
- 8:40So, Veronica, where can people find more about the chamber?
- 8:44Where can they get the list?
- 8:46And, where can they stop and see you and the rest of the chamber gang when they get into
- 8:50Sturgis?
- 8:51Sure.
- 8:51Yep.
- 8:52All of the information is right on the homepage of our website.
- 8:56You can go to sturgisareachamber.com.
- 8:58There's a link to the the comprehensive vendor map, a link to the event list, and then we have
- 9:03a little adventure guide as well that kinda helps you plan out your stay if you haven't
- 9:07been before, plus all the rest of our year round stuff and our business directory.
- 9:11And then if you want to call us or email us with questions, you can always do that.
- 9:18You can just quick Google search.
- 9:20You can find that info.
- 9:21And we are located on Junction Avenue, just north of the hospital in Sturgis.
- 9:26Fantastic.
- 9:27Well, Veronica, thank you for all the hard work you've put into these lists.
- 9:30They were a huge help to me in planning out the SCENE projects rally week.
- 9:35And thank you for being part of the SCENE.
- 9:38Of course.
- 9:38Thank you.
- 9:39It was great.
