- 0:21Speaker 1: you gotta work.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Welcome to Let's Talk with Carl Lee. Let's Talk is
- 0:26Speaker 3: probably presented by Attorney Frank Walker, Real Talk, real experience,
- 0:30Speaker 3: real results, Frank Walker, Law dot Com. Let that conversation
- 0:34Speaker 3: begin on Let's Talk.
- 0:36Speaker 4: Hello, ladies and gentlemen, This is Carl Lee with Let's
- 0:40Speaker 4: Talk and Lisa Odie, my.
- 0:44Speaker 2: Dearest Frink, my dearest friend.
- 0:48Speaker 4: Is the only one we have in the building today.
- 0:51Speaker 4: We're hoping that Hollis is gonna be coming. He had
- 0:54Speaker 4: some work he needed to get done and said he
- 0:56Speaker 4: may try to get in a little bit later.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Lisa draft time.
- 1:02Speaker 5: You know, Okay, before we get into this conversation, you
- 1:06Speaker 5: have to be honest. How much of it did you watch?
- 1:08Speaker 5: Because I know how antsy and you can't sit still
- 1:11Speaker 5: long enough to even for a pick.
- 1:13Speaker 4: My only interests really were the first couple of picks
- 1:18Speaker 4: because I wanted to.
- 1:19Speaker 5: Like number one.
- 1:20Speaker 4: I wanted everybody likes to figure out the number one.
- 1:23Speaker 4: And again I have a I have a. I have
- 1:28Speaker 4: an issue with with with the draft. So you tell
- 1:34Speaker 4: us about it well, And I think I said this
- 1:38Speaker 4: the other day on Dave's show.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Nobody.
- 1:44Speaker 4: And I'm not trying to do brag on my career
- 1:47Speaker 4: or how long it was or anything like that. But
- 1:50Speaker 4: if you draft me seven mm hmm, and I have
- 1:56Speaker 4: the success that I had in Minnesota, mm hmm. And
- 2:00Speaker 4: there's guys that you drafted second round that didn't play
- 2:02Speaker 4: two years. Some guys didn't even make it a year.
- 2:06Speaker 2: You know.
- 2:07Speaker 4: I think there's something there's something wrong with the system.
- 2:11Speaker 4: And when I say that, I say it in regards
- 2:15Speaker 4: to places like West Virginia, before the Randy Mosses and
- 2:19Speaker 4: those kinds of players were coming out. You might see
- 2:23Speaker 4: a talented player, but what typically what I would always hear, Yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 4: But the question is can he play at that against
- 2:32Speaker 4: the type of players His skill set might be okay,
- 2:37Speaker 4: you know, but he can hang with with with players
- 2:42Speaker 4: that have played at Alabama and all of those kind
- 2:44Speaker 4: of things. And I don't I don't think that you
- 2:48Speaker 4: can judge that visibly. I don't know if you can
- 2:53Speaker 4: look at the film and say that that's something that
- 2:58Speaker 4: you can such a talented scout that you can make
- 3:03Speaker 4: the dictation of where I or players like me could play.
- 3:09Speaker 5: So what you're saying is they can make a physical
- 3:12Speaker 5: type of evaluation, but they can't really evaluate the heart
- 3:16Speaker 5: and soul.
- 3:17Speaker 4: None of that of a player, the work that they're
- 3:18Speaker 4: going to put in, the work, ethic, and all of
- 3:22Speaker 4: those kinds of things.
- 3:23Speaker 2: And I think you know.
- 3:26Speaker 4: Because and and I've said this a thousand times in
- 3:29Speaker 4: a thousand different places. I wasn't even I wasn't even
- 3:33Speaker 4: one of the best football players at South Charleston High School.
- 3:39Speaker 4: And I wasn't one of the best players even in
- 3:41Speaker 4: my in my mind, even at Marshall.
- 3:45Speaker 2: And so there are guys there.
- 3:49Speaker 4: That this guy named Donnelle Ross, who was a corner
- 3:54Speaker 4: and had been a corner of his entire life.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I'm safety, had been a safety my entire life.
- 3:59Speaker 4: I get drafted, and to me, if I'm him, because
- 4:04Speaker 4: I was getting drafted as a corner, he was shorter
- 4:07Speaker 4: than I was, So you know, they were.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Looking for long. They held that again, and so they
- 4:11Speaker 2: held that against him, and he didn't go. But he was.
- 4:18Speaker 4: I saw other he was. He wasn't any he wasn't
- 4:21Speaker 4: any shorter than Darryl Green. Now I'm not saying he
- 4:24Speaker 4: was going to be at Daryl Green, but how do you?
- 4:26Speaker 2: How do you?
- 4:27Speaker 4: I mean, I just don't think those numbers hold up anymore.
- 4:30Speaker 5: Well, let me ask you this, because it's been a
- 4:32Speaker 5: minute since you you were drafted and you had the NFL.
- 4:37Speaker 6: She said that night she was flirting with put off
- 4:42Speaker 6: the show. She's close to getting off the show today.
- 4:47Speaker 5: Let me let me finish my thought here, come on now,
- 4:52Speaker 5: and Matt, you're harassing me too. But so back whenever
- 4:56Speaker 5: you went through that process, when you had to go
- 4:59Speaker 5: to the combine and have to be physically evaluated, did
- 5:02Speaker 5: they have the extensive interview process that they do today.
- 5:06Speaker 5: Did you do a lot of like question and answer
- 5:09Speaker 5: with with scouts with coaches?
- 5:11Speaker 2: I don't really remember anything, any major structure of conversation.
- 5:19Speaker 5: So do you think they're trying to remedy what you're
- 5:21Speaker 5: talking about?
- 5:22Speaker 2: Like? Possibly? Just possibly possibly, But I think I think that.
- 5:30Speaker 4: For me, when I look at it.
- 5:34Speaker 2: It's I think it's even guesswork.
- 5:37Speaker 4: Even think about this from the first round guys and
- 5:40Speaker 4: especially quarterbacks, how many times have we seen the draft
- 5:45Speaker 4: get a quarterback that had a great college career, you
- 5:48Speaker 4: pick him number one and you bring him in and
- 5:52Speaker 4: he doesn't he doesn't show up right, And okay, so
- 5:56Speaker 4: what what is how do you define that? Like what
- 5:59Speaker 4: what you say is wrong with that? Like because you
- 6:02Speaker 4: saw the talent, you saw the arm. Arm is great, right,
- 6:06Speaker 4: you saw him play. See if you saw him get
- 6:08Speaker 4: hit and he gets back up, so he's got some
- 6:10Speaker 4: toughness to him.
- 6:11Speaker 2: But all of a sudden he gets to the league.
- 6:14Speaker 2: What's the problem? See?
- 6:16Speaker 4: And I think what that problem is and I don't
- 6:19Speaker 4: think that you can you can. You can't fix it.
- 6:23Speaker 4: It's can you step up?
- 6:26Speaker 5: It's mental toughness.
- 6:27Speaker 4: It's a mental toughness that you can Like, it's from
- 6:30Speaker 4: going from high school to college.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Can you make that adjustment?
- 6:33Speaker 4: Because the game is faster, it's it's bigger and all
- 6:36Speaker 4: those kinds of things. You go to the league, it's
- 6:38Speaker 4: bigger and it's faster, and it never is gonna slow down.
- 6:42Speaker 4: Like you're not gonna get a team that's gonna slow down.
- 6:45Speaker 4: It's everybody is great.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Well, keeping that in mind, let's bring it to the
- 6:49Speaker 5: present tense. And I totally agree with what you're saying.
- 6:51Speaker 5: It's very difficult to evaluate you know a quarterback and
- 6:56Speaker 5: know whether or not they're going to be successful at
- 6:57Speaker 5: the next level. I mean, it's just really any position
- 7:00Speaker 5: for the NFL. Yes, But okay, so let me ask
- 7:02Speaker 5: you this question. Did they get it right this year
- 7:04Speaker 5: with the number one pick being Fernando Mendoza? Did they
- 7:08Speaker 5: get it right or did they not get it right?
- 7:10Speaker 5: What's your opinion at this point? I know we can't
- 7:12Speaker 5: we don't have our magic, you know, crystal ball and
- 7:14Speaker 5: see the future. But just knowing his accolades, the things
- 7:17Speaker 5: he accomplished at the collegiate level, do you think they
- 7:20Speaker 5: got it right?
- 7:22Speaker 4: The only way that I can answer that would would
- 7:25Speaker 4: I have to say, we.
- 7:27Speaker 2: Won't know until he gets the camp.
- 7:31Speaker 5: Okay, but did you have another player that you thought
- 7:33Speaker 5: was more deserving than him to be to go number one?
- 7:36Speaker 7: No?
- 7:36Speaker 4: I think I think because my Okay, so I'll ask
- 7:41Speaker 4: this question to you, who would you You're going to
- 7:47Speaker 4: take whoever you think is going to be the best
- 7:49Speaker 4: player in the league. And that's going to be a
- 7:52Speaker 4: lot of times based on somewhat visual and a whole
- 7:55Speaker 4: lot on.
- 7:56Speaker 5: Stats and also awards and the award Scott Rained Up Awards.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Yes, and if you're those awards and you.
- 8:04Speaker 5: Not to mention his team went undefeated, national championship for
- 8:08Speaker 5: the school, all the all those things, right.
- 8:12Speaker 4: So you can't you can't like who's passing him up? Like,
- 8:17Speaker 4: how do you pass him up? Unless you've got a
- 8:19Speaker 4: great quarterback already?
- 8:21Speaker 5: You know, even then, I just don't know how you
- 8:25Speaker 5: pass up on the guy.
- 8:26Speaker 2: Well, here's the future.
- 8:28Speaker 4: I mean, but the quarterback that's there now, that's starting,
- 8:32Speaker 4: he ain't staying.
- 8:33Speaker 2: He doesn't want that heat.
- 8:34Speaker 5: Right, Well, let's think about where he's going. He's going
- 8:38Speaker 5: to the Raiders. Well and Las Vegas says, you know,
- 8:41Speaker 5: and we'll get into this conversation later, but but you
- 8:44Speaker 5: know his purpose. You know, there were only like I
- 8:46Speaker 5: think two quarterbacks drafted in the first round. One one was,
- 8:49Speaker 5: of course, uh Fernando. The other one was who was it? Tie?
- 8:55Speaker 5: I think maybe I got it wrong, Simpson Ty Simpson, Yeah,
- 8:58Speaker 5: Alabama and he went at number thirteen. Right. But their
- 9:03Speaker 5: purposes where they were drafted and what purposes they will
- 9:08Speaker 5: serve for those teams are drastically two different things. We
- 9:11Speaker 5: know that at the Raiders they're in shambles. They need
- 9:16Speaker 5: a quarterback and they need it now, whereas Ty will
- 9:19Speaker 5: probably sit behind, you know, Matt Stafford for a while
- 9:23Speaker 5: and learn, so you know when you compare those two
- 9:26Speaker 5: and we can talk about that later, but you know,
- 9:29Speaker 5: just just kind of addressing what you're saying with quarterbacks
- 9:32Speaker 5: when they're drafted. It really depends on what the team
- 9:36Speaker 5: needs them for.
- 9:36Speaker 2: It really, it really does.
- 9:39Speaker 4: And to those two examples, and if you ask yourself
- 9:43Speaker 4: the question, which one of those would you'd want to be?
- 9:45Speaker 4: You don't want to be the player that you want
- 9:47Speaker 4: to be the one that's going to get an opportunity
- 9:49Speaker 4: to play, but not always, but you as the individual.
- 9:55Speaker 5: I think it's a healthy thing for a quarterback to
- 9:57Speaker 5: go in and back up a start a little from them.
- 10:00Speaker 4: But the ego of great players, talented players coming out
- 10:06Speaker 4: of college going to the pros, No way I'm gonna
- 10:11Speaker 4: get drafted in the first round, go to a team
- 10:15Speaker 4: who's been struggling, and you're not gonna start me at quarterback. Well,
- 10:20Speaker 4: the whole expectation of me coming is me playing right
- 10:26Speaker 4: in the other situation where you've still got another player.
- 10:31Speaker 4: The conversation there there there should have been, could have
- 10:35Speaker 4: been conversation, we're gonna draft you. We're thinking about drafting
- 10:38Speaker 4: you in the first round.
- 10:40Speaker 5: I'm sure those conversations took place, and we like to have.
- 10:44Speaker 2: You, you know, sit down, you know, maybe for a
- 10:48Speaker 2: year and watch.
- 10:49Speaker 5: And those quarterbacks had to probably agree to those things before.
- 10:53Speaker 5: I mean that they possibly probably know their purpose. I
- 10:56Speaker 5: mean you know that that Tie knew when he went
- 10:59Speaker 5: to the Rams that Matt Stafford is going to be
- 11:02Speaker 5: there this year. Yes, and so you know his role
- 11:05Speaker 5: was going to be completely different from you know, Fernando.
- 11:08Speaker 4: But but if you're if you're what's interesting is and
- 11:12Speaker 4: we'll we'll hear this as time goes on, what Stafford's thinking,
- 11:17Speaker 4: how he feels about it, because.
- 11:19Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, doesn't that doesn't always go well. It
- 11:21Speaker 5: does not go well because that's.
- 11:24Speaker 2: Are yeah, and and and you know playing for a
- 11:27Speaker 2: team mm hmm.
- 11:29Speaker 4: You know, every player that's a that's a starter in
- 11:32Speaker 4: most cases watch the draft. They watched their team's draft.
- 11:37Speaker 4: Because I want to know what DB's you're drafted.
- 11:39Speaker 5: For sure.
- 11:40Speaker 8: You got to think though, I mean, he's thirty eight
- 11:42Speaker 8: years old, he has to know only God, probably a
- 11:45Speaker 8: couple of years left doing this. They're going to have
- 11:48Speaker 8: to bring somebody in as your predecessor exactly.
- 11:50Speaker 4: And I'm one and that and that is logical to
- 11:54Speaker 4: the normal person.
- 11:56Speaker 5: So we got We've got the great professional NFL behind.
- 12:00Speaker 2: I'm telling you players don't see that. Now.
- 12:04Speaker 4: If I'm saying I got two years and they okay,
- 12:07Speaker 4: I'm gonna try to get two more years out of
- 12:09Speaker 4: the Vikings and they draft, well, if they draft a corner, okay,
- 12:14Speaker 4: now I'm thinking, you know, they know I'm about done too.
- 12:19Speaker 4: So the question is are they when or when's that?
- 12:22Speaker 4: What is their number? Is their number? Maybe just one
- 12:25Speaker 4: more year, maybe half a season. So no, I'm not
- 12:28Speaker 4: comfortable with you first round corner in the draft. And
- 12:33Speaker 4: and you know I'm only I only got a couple
- 12:35Speaker 4: more years, maybe a year left. No, I'm not wanting
- 12:38Speaker 4: that because I know what's gonna happen.
- 12:40Speaker 5: So the franchise understands the purpose and the reasoning, and
- 12:44Speaker 5: but the players resent it. It's kind of what you're saying,
- 12:46Speaker 5: yes to a degree.
- 12:47Speaker 4: Yes to a degree, any player who's had who's had
- 12:51Speaker 4: some loyalty to a team, and you don't even and
- 12:53Speaker 4: I don't necessarily you don't necessarily have had to have
- 12:57Speaker 4: loyalty to the team, but you aren't know what your
- 13:00Speaker 4: future is, like you've already got it mapped out in
- 13:02Speaker 4: your mind of you know, a couple more years and
- 13:05Speaker 4: you know, I'll call it a day.
- 13:07Speaker 8: The upper management that they sit down with the players
- 13:10Speaker 8: and say, look, you've said this and we know that,
- 13:13Speaker 8: and we're going to give you that, but we also
- 13:15Speaker 8: need to prepare for our future here too.
- 13:18Speaker 4: If they do now, I don't know, okay, but I'll
- 13:21Speaker 4: say this, no, they did not do that before.
- 13:24Speaker 5: Back in my.
- 13:25Speaker 4: Day, we you had no idea really who they were
- 13:29Speaker 4: going to draft, Like, they're not talking to you about
- 13:31Speaker 4: like who we're going to draft. So you're sitting watching
- 13:34Speaker 4: the draft, which again is wow. I'm not a huge
- 13:38Speaker 4: draft watcher. Is because I'm not interested in Like you know,
- 13:41Speaker 4: all I'm worried about.
- 13:42Speaker 5: Is you've lived the trauma of it.
- 13:45Speaker 2: You know, how many corners? How many corners did you draft?
- 13:48Speaker 8: Maybe that's maybe that's what we're getting here. This is
- 13:51Speaker 8: trauma response is this is PTSD.
- 13:57Speaker 5: Now that explains that aft pt and then some and
- 14:02Speaker 5: then every year every.
- 14:05Speaker 2: Time we get to this. That's funny, but think about it.
- 14:12Speaker 4: You put yourself in that situation, like you you in
- 14:15Speaker 4: your mind, you think you've had a good career and
- 14:17Speaker 4: you've been with this team for a while, and and
- 14:20Speaker 4: you feel like there's like you got some you got
- 14:22Speaker 4: loyalty to them, you know, like you you are you
- 14:26Speaker 4: are a packer, okay, and and and you trust them
- 14:31Speaker 4: and you've had your success there and all of a sudden,
- 14:34Speaker 4: here comes to two d vs. And you're a corner
- 14:38Speaker 4: and you're and there are two corners coming in. You're
- 14:41Speaker 4: the oldest corner out on the team. What are you thinking?
- 14:45Speaker 8: Like?
- 14:45Speaker 2: What are you like? Hey?
- 14:47Speaker 6: Man?
- 14:47Speaker 2: How you doing? Good luck?
- 14:48Speaker 8: Man?
- 14:48Speaker 2: I hope the best for you. That's fake. You're gonna
- 14:52Speaker 2: give him, you know, you.
- 14:56Speaker 5: Can leave a couple of banana peals laying around on
- 14:58Speaker 5: the field and stuff like that.
- 15:00Speaker 2: Say I'll set late your year five, six, seven, eight,
- 15:06Speaker 2: you know, and playing pretty good?
- 15:08Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't kill you bring it, you know, because
- 15:12Speaker 4: I feel like I'm good.
- 15:14Speaker 2: So now yeah, I can dap you up. Hey.
- 15:16Speaker 5: And more than likely, if you're playing good, they're not
- 15:18Speaker 5: going to bring in any threat anyway or any kind
- 15:20Speaker 5: of competition. They trust, they're.
- 15:22Speaker 4: Trust, they trusted. We have a long jety. They may
- 15:25Speaker 4: be looking for maybe a backup or a Nickel or
- 15:27Speaker 4: dom guy. So now I'm even helping you, you know,
- 15:31Speaker 4: I'm helping you go through the process, learn the different things, right,
- 15:35Speaker 4: But when I'm ten, eleven, twelve, yeah, I can't really
- 15:41Speaker 4: help you.
- 15:43Speaker 2: Not if I want to get from ten to eleven
- 15:44Speaker 2: or eleven.
- 15:45Speaker 5: This is the raw, ugly side of Karl Lee that.
- 15:48Speaker 4: We're witnessing reality of survival. And I mean, there's so
- 15:55Speaker 4: many different situations that you that you deal with. Like
- 16:00Speaker 4: when you start talking about okay, let's just say all
- 16:02Speaker 4: those folks are in camp.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Okay, now we're all in.
- 16:04Speaker 4: Camp, and we're in meetings and all this kind of stuff,
- 16:10Speaker 4: you get about two I think it's two at least.
- 16:13Speaker 4: Back Then you get like two weeks before there was
- 16:16Speaker 4: going to be a cut. Then the cuts started coming
- 16:19Speaker 4: on like Tuesday, I think they were. So by the
- 16:23Speaker 4: time you get that two weeks in, you either know
- 16:27Speaker 4: how good those guys are or that you're safe. In
- 16:31Speaker 4: most cases, you think you're safe. But the problem, the
- 16:34Speaker 4: other problem that you have. Let's assume I'm making twenty
- 16:37Speaker 4: dollars and the other corner is making ten dollars, right,
- 16:42Speaker 4: and they draft a corner in the first round. Yeah,
- 16:48Speaker 4: I'm the corner going because I'm getting the most. I'm
- 16:50Speaker 4: getting paid most. They're not overly interested in the idea
- 16:55Speaker 4: of paying me. That may not be all teams, that
- 16:58Speaker 4: may not be today, how they do it today.
- 17:01Speaker 5: No, I think it is. I think that's pretty.
- 17:02Speaker 2: Similar our general when.
- 17:04Speaker 5: They when they have caps, yeah, and you know, salary caps.
- 17:07Speaker 5: And if you're making so much money and they have
- 17:08Speaker 5: this young guy come in that they can pay less.
- 17:11Speaker 5: I mean that makes sense.
- 17:12Speaker 2: I mean it's a threat. Yes.
- 17:13Speaker 4: And and Mike Linn, our general manager, rested. So he
- 17:18Speaker 4: was by far.
- 17:21Speaker 2: For me.
- 17:21Speaker 4: And I hate to say this, and he you know,
- 17:24Speaker 4: in the in the same sentence, but like he was
- 17:29Speaker 4: just not my kind of like he just wasn't he
- 17:32Speaker 4: wasn't fair. He just wasn't fair to players. He wasn't
- 17:36Speaker 4: fair on the on the racial.
- 17:37Speaker 2: Side of it.
- 17:40Speaker 4: He he enjoyed trying to low ball you and win
- 17:44Speaker 4: the game, you know. And and and it was like,
- 17:48Speaker 4: so you're in there, you're fighting for two dollars and
- 17:51Speaker 4: he wants to give you seventy five cents, right, and
- 17:54Speaker 4: you know, because it sounds like.
- 17:56Speaker 2: Yes, and it was tough. I mean, it was a
- 17:59Speaker 2: really really.
- 18:00Speaker 5: So he didn't come over for Thanksgiving dinner.
- 18:02Speaker 4: No, he didn't get many cards, but Christmas or anything
- 18:06Speaker 4: like that, but I didn't happen.
- 18:09Speaker 5: Let's do this. There's a clip that I'd like to
- 18:11Speaker 5: play since we're on the subject of the draft and
- 18:13Speaker 5: we're talking about Fernando, and it just kind of wraps
- 18:16Speaker 5: up about why he wasn't at the draft.
- 18:19Speaker 9: I deliberately skipped attending the draft event in Pittsburgh. My mother, Elsa,
- 18:24Speaker 9: has suffered from multiple scrosis for eighteen years and cannot
- 18:27Speaker 9: endure long distance travel. Besides, the venue could only accommodate
- 18:30Speaker 9: ten to twelve relatives and friends, my family, coaches, mentors,
- 18:34Speaker 9: as well as my high school and college teammates. Every
- 18:37Speaker 9: single one of them has helped me through my lowest moments.
- 18:40Speaker 9: I could not bring myself to choose only a few,
- 18:42Speaker 9: and I did not want to leave anyone disappointed. By
- 18:45Speaker 9: staying at my home in Miami, I could embrace my
- 18:47Speaker 9: mother and sit together with everyone who loves me. No
- 18:50Speaker 9: grand stage could ever replace this warmth. I have signed
- 18:55Speaker 9: a fully guaranteed four year contract worth fifty four point
- 18:59Speaker 9: six y two eight million US dollars Nevada where the
- 19:02Speaker 9: Raiders are based, has no state income tax. I will
- 19:06Speaker 9: use this money to customize a new wheelchair for my
- 19:09Speaker 9: mother and purchase an accessible residence. In addition, I will
- 19:13Speaker 9: donate five hundred thousand US dollars to the Multiple Scleroses Association,
- 19:17Speaker 9: hoping to ease the suffering of more patience like my mother.
- 19:20Speaker 9: I may have missed the grand ceremony in Pittsburgh, but
- 19:23Speaker 9: I have gained something far more precious.
- 19:26Speaker 5: What are your thoughts?
- 19:27Speaker 4: Okay, So to me, that's a that's a guy who
- 19:32Speaker 4: has a motive like he is. He has a purpose,
- 19:35Speaker 4: I should say it that way. He has a purpose
- 19:38Speaker 4: in why he why he wants to be in that
- 19:42Speaker 4: first round, what he's going to do with that all
- 19:44Speaker 4: that guaranteed money, he's already got that.
- 19:46Speaker 5: About that amount. Who goodness, gracious, crazy.
- 19:50Speaker 4: I don't even think some of the best players probably
- 19:53Speaker 4: didn't make that money in the entire time there I
- 19:58Speaker 4: won't say the entire time, but maybe the entire time
- 20:01Speaker 4: of a contract. So if you have a three four
- 20:03Speaker 4: year deal, you're probably not making that that money at all,
- 20:07Speaker 4: you know. And it's just it's just unbelievable of how
- 20:11Speaker 4: the game has changed.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Financially, and I don't know what what.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Sparked it being that why the money has changed so drastically.
- 20:22Speaker 4: The same the same audience is still watching, you know,
- 20:26Speaker 4: and the same television ratings and money and all those
- 20:30Speaker 4: kinds of things.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Its still there. It's all the same. I just don't
- 20:33Speaker 2: you know.
- 20:35Speaker 5: It's it's it's it's well, I think a lot of
- 20:38Speaker 5: it is now and you know who pays for it.
- 20:40Speaker 5: The fans paid for absolutely. I mean, like we've talked
- 20:42Speaker 5: about before, when you go to the concession stand at
- 20:44Speaker 5: an NFL game, you know you're in you know, least
- 20:48Speaker 5: put a second mortgage on your house for coke. But
- 20:51Speaker 5: but anyway, so one of his points was that he
- 20:54Speaker 5: wasn't president at the draft, and he explained why do
- 20:57Speaker 5: you think the Raiders took how to problem with that?
- 21:01Speaker 5: Because you know, he wasn't on the stage. He wasn't
- 21:03Speaker 5: you know, there to shake hands with the commissioner, he
- 21:05Speaker 5: wasn't there to put the hat on in person. Or
- 21:08Speaker 5: do you think they're just like, well, you know, we
- 21:11Speaker 5: know what we're getting and and we don't mind him
- 21:13Speaker 5: skipping that. What's what's your thing?
- 21:15Speaker 2: I'll go to the ladder and say that.
- 21:19Speaker 4: You know what kind of you know, what kind of
- 21:20Speaker 4: player you're going to get, because if that player is
- 21:23Speaker 4: that loyal to his parents and that kind of thing, right,
- 21:26Speaker 4: he he's going to be a leader. He's going to
- 21:29Speaker 4: be a team guy. He's going to be willing to
- 21:32Speaker 4: come in into our organization, tie it together and be
- 21:37Speaker 4: and be bonded and and maybe turn us around.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Right, you know, I think I think.
- 21:43Speaker 5: I mean they said reports where the Raiders were fine
- 21:45Speaker 5: with it. I mean, according to what I read, I
- 21:48Speaker 5: don't think anybody.
- 21:49Speaker 4: I don't think any team cares whether or not your
- 21:51Speaker 4: you know, because a lot of a lot of players.
- 21:55Speaker 5: I just think the first pick is special, you know,
- 21:57Speaker 5: the first pick of the first round. You know.
- 22:00Speaker 4: But let me ask you this, and it is, but
- 22:02Speaker 4: let me ask you this, who would you rather be
- 22:05Speaker 4: around your family and your friends?
- 22:09Speaker 10: Oh?
- 22:10Speaker 5: I'm with him, No, I know, I'm team Mendoza on this.
- 22:13Speaker 5: I mean, I think I think he made the right choices.
- 22:15Speaker 5: You know. You know, his mother is obviously medically fragile,
- 22:19Speaker 5: and she has been one of his biggest you know, supporters,
- 22:22Speaker 5: obviously cheerleaders in his life, and he wanted to be
- 22:24Speaker 5: with her during that special moment. I'm saying from the
- 22:28Speaker 5: outside view of the franchise, you know that kind of
- 22:32Speaker 5: doesn't tarnish their moment, but it is kind of you know,
- 22:35Speaker 5: everybody's watching that first pick of the first round.
- 22:37Speaker 8: I don't know that it's you don't think well, to me,
- 22:40Speaker 8: it seems like everybody.
- 22:42Speaker 2: I feel like it's a media thing exactly.
- 22:45Speaker 8: I think the media is pushing that because, I mean,
- 22:47Speaker 8: the fact of the matter is, I mean, as great
- 22:49Speaker 8: as the draft is for all these teams, they're worried
- 22:52Speaker 8: about the season.
- 22:53Speaker 5: That's true.
- 22:54Speaker 8: You know, the optics of this particular moment are already
- 22:57Speaker 8: gone in past.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true.
- 22:59Speaker 2: I think the.
- 23:00Speaker 8: Especially in a situation like this where you've got a
- 23:02Speaker 8: player who obviously isn't doing this for ego reasons right right,
- 23:07Speaker 8: that I think is what makes the base.
- 23:09Speaker 2: It's not ego.
- 23:10Speaker 8: He's got good reasoning there. And I think what people
- 23:14Speaker 8: are mad in the media is because they have made
- 23:17Speaker 8: the draft into this big spectacle exactly and now all
- 23:21Speaker 8: of a sudden, you've got a number one pick here
- 23:23Speaker 8: that it's just like I'm going to go a little
- 23:25Speaker 8: bit of a different path here, and they're mad about it.
- 23:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 23:29Speaker 8: I don't know why they're mad about it, because he's
- 23:30Speaker 8: got great reasoning, but they're mad about it.
- 23:32Speaker 5: Only the only people that should be mad are the
- 23:35Speaker 5: Raiders franchise, and they're they're okay with that. I mean,
- 23:37Speaker 5: they've come out and said, you know, we're okay. We're
- 23:39Speaker 5: focused on his performance. In fact, if anything that shows
- 23:42Speaker 5: us that, you know, he's a football first player. He's
- 23:45Speaker 5: not into the showy part of it. You know, he's
- 23:48Speaker 5: going to be that guy for the for the franchise.
- 23:50Speaker 2: So I mean, he's him him being there.
- 23:55Speaker 4: If you feel like you have to be there, then
- 23:59Speaker 4: the reality to that that is is that you do
- 24:01Speaker 4: you know, you do buy into I want to walk
- 24:04Speaker 4: up there, I want to get I want to. I
- 24:06Speaker 4: want to I want to shake hands with everybody. I
- 24:08Speaker 4: want to. I want to do that. And everybody who's
- 24:12Speaker 4: playing football in college would love to have that opportunity to.
- 24:16Speaker 5: Do it, right.
- 24:17Speaker 4: But the circumstances, but the circumstances for this young man
- 24:22Speaker 4: and him him picking that nobody, to me, does it
- 24:26Speaker 4: sound like anybody picked it for him.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Sounds like he picked that.
- 24:29Speaker 4: He made that decision, because I don't think anybody would
- 24:32Speaker 4: have even said, and I bet you there were people
- 24:34Speaker 4: who who was in his family said, are you sure,
- 24:37Speaker 4: are you sure? Yes, yea, soney, just go I'll be okay,
- 24:45Speaker 4: I can see it on TV. But he wanted that
- 24:49Speaker 4: to be He wanted to be there and be present
- 24:52Speaker 4: and to make sure that she was taking she was
- 24:54Speaker 4: taken care of. And how much better was that to
- 24:59Speaker 4: see that on television and be there with your family.
- 25:03Speaker 2: Right right?
- 25:04Speaker 8: And that's the point here too, because at the end
- 25:07Speaker 8: of the day, they're still going to send cameras down
- 25:09Speaker 8: to his house. Yeah, and they're there film and I mean,
- 25:12Speaker 8: just because he's not their live doing it, everybody in
- 25:15Speaker 8: America is watching it happen.
- 25:17Speaker 5: Anyway, right, Yeah, I mean I agree with that totally.
- 25:21Speaker 5: I mean I think that if anything, it kind of
- 25:24Speaker 5: solidified our view of him as being this solid, you know,
- 25:30Speaker 5: team player that is not interested in the frilly, showy
- 25:34Speaker 5: part of the NFL. It shows that his ego is
- 25:38Speaker 5: not where you know, it could be, being the first
- 25:42Speaker 5: pick of the first round of the draft. So it's
- 25:45Speaker 5: a good you know, to me. It shows his character.
- 25:48Speaker 4: And and and what I'll say, and I'll say this
- 25:52Speaker 4: where what really matters and what I'm looking at and
- 25:57Speaker 4: hearing your process of how and I think you're exactly right.
- 26:02Speaker 4: But I think the internal piece of him, I think
- 26:05Speaker 4: the internal ego of athletes is the best place to
- 26:11Speaker 4: have your ego. It's better for you to have your ego.
- 26:19Speaker 4: You can walk in it, you can feel it, you
- 26:22Speaker 4: can enjoy it. You don't have to put it out
- 26:26Speaker 4: to people. You don't have to show with the people.
- 26:28Speaker 4: Let them see. If you thought I was a good
- 26:31Speaker 4: football player, I wanted you.
- 26:32Speaker 2: To know that by me playing. I don't need to
- 26:34Speaker 2: tell you.
- 26:35Speaker 4: And in this situation here, I think he was comfortable
- 26:39Speaker 4: in believing that he was going to go one and
- 26:45Speaker 4: somewhere anywhere, and it would be easier for him to
- 26:50Speaker 4: stay home and take care of his mom.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Then to be there and be seen and all of
- 26:57Speaker 2: that when she just didn't want to.
- 27:00Speaker 4: So, all right, well, let's take a quick break and
- 27:03Speaker 4: we'll be right back.

- 27:54Speaker 1: Yeah, you gotta work, You gotta work.
- 28:03Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we're back and we got
- 28:08Speaker 4: another co host in the building, Hollins Lewis.
- 28:10Speaker 2: What's up, Sorry, I'm late.
- 28:13Speaker 4: Well, well, we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna, we're gonna
- 28:17Speaker 4: bum rush you with a couple of questions. Anyway, we
- 28:20Speaker 4: were talking about the Yeah you're gonna pay the price back.
- 28:22Speaker 4: So I don't know, I don't know a lot of positions.
- 28:27Speaker 4: I don't know a lot of things about a lot
- 28:28Speaker 4: of positions. I know mine, and I know you know.
- 28:31Speaker 4: But when you when you think about the quarterbacks in
- 28:36Speaker 4: the NFL and how many teams that take quarterbacks, there's
- 28:43Speaker 4: there's not a lot of them that pan out.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Is there is there is there a reason behind that?
- 28:49Speaker 2: Is like? Is it the is it the competition? Is
- 28:51Speaker 2: it the what do you think? What is your justification
- 28:57Speaker 2: of why quarterbacks struggle? At least? And I consider that
- 29:02Speaker 2: a struggle.
- 29:03Speaker 4: I don't know when anybody else, but I think quarterbacks
- 29:05Speaker 4: struggle trying to get into the league.
- 29:08Speaker 2: Man, it's so much.
- 29:09Speaker 4: I think that, you know, number one, I think it's
- 29:11Speaker 4: just a difficult position to evaluate because you can even
- 29:16Speaker 4: have somebody who has the talent, but they don't have
- 29:18Speaker 4: the leadership, they don't have like the demeanor to like
- 29:21Speaker 4: really like you know, take charge of that locker room.
- 29:25Speaker 4: You can have somebody with who's charismatic, who has the
- 29:28Speaker 4: you know, the leadership ability, but doesn't have the talent.
- 29:31Speaker 4: And I think that once you hit the NFL, not
- 29:34Speaker 4: only do you have to have those intangibles, but you
- 29:38Speaker 4: also have to have the metrics and you have to
- 29:41Speaker 4: be able to make those NFL throws one time in time.
- 29:45Speaker 4: I mean, when you talk about guys like Matthew Stafford.
- 29:47Speaker 4: When you talk about Mahomes, you know, those guys are
- 29:51Speaker 4: making unbelievable throws, not only as it relates to like
- 29:56Speaker 4: arm strength and different things of that nature, but their
- 29:58Speaker 4: anticipation processing speed like a Peyton Manny or a Tom Brady.
- 30:03Speaker 4: So it's just and again, and that's why I'm like,
- 30:07Speaker 4: I'm for like usf UFL, because I think we have
- 30:11Speaker 4: to have a buffer because even the college game, as
- 30:14Speaker 4: far as the dynamics and the makeup of it, playing
- 30:17Speaker 4: at pro style, it just isn't the NFL. And those
- 30:20Speaker 4: skills always don't translate. You can't be a Johnny Manziel
- 30:25Speaker 4: or Kyler Murray. You know, those guys can run around
- 30:27Speaker 4: make plays that don't work in the NFL because you
- 30:30Speaker 4: got a lineman who's six' six running a four five
- 30:34Speaker 4: forty and it's two hundred and eighty, pounds you know
- 30:37Speaker 4: WHAT i. Mean so those sort of skills don't always
- 30:41Speaker 4: translate to how they were able to operate at the college.
- 30:44Speaker 4: Game and also just you, know LIKE i, said playing,
- 30:48Speaker 4: quarterback you know it's a LIKE i tell, people it's
- 30:51Speaker 4: A ceo, Position so that means it's A. Ceo you
- 30:55Speaker 4: are the representation of not just that, organization that, team that.
- 31:00Speaker 4: City you are the representation of a multi billion trillion
- 31:05Speaker 4: dollar conglomerate within a global, Conglomerate so you have to
- 31:09Speaker 4: have that perspective as. Well AND i think that's why
- 31:13Speaker 4: you're gonna see like a guy Like Kirk cousins continuously gets.
- 31:16Speaker 4: Signed some guy we would say it's, mediocre but he
- 31:19Speaker 4: can he can win. You he can win you four
- 31:22Speaker 4: or five games maybe out of six or seven in a,
- 31:24Speaker 4: stretch like if you really needed, it he can do.
- 31:27Speaker 2: That A Jameis.
- 31:28Speaker 4: Winston we're going to see those guys because it's such
- 31:31Speaker 4: a hard. Position when you talk about you, know there's
- 31:33Speaker 4: thirty two, teams you might have what seventy, quarterbacks and
- 31:37Speaker 4: there might be fifteen like really really good. Ones so
- 31:41Speaker 4: it's just incredibly. Hard and that's, why you, know WHEN
- 31:43Speaker 4: i look at this year's, DRAFT i wasn't you Know.
- 31:46Speaker 4: MENDOZA i think, again he has the Intangible i'm not
- 31:51Speaker 4: sure he has the tangibles actually to make it work
- 31:55Speaker 4: in the. League and when you like a like a
- 31:58Speaker 4: like a you know with The rams trading to get
- 32:00Speaker 4: A Ti simpson who had what fifteen sixteen starts in.
- 32:04Speaker 2: College that just doesn't ring good for. ME i, MEAN
- 32:08Speaker 2: i don't know.
- 32:08Speaker 5: That that's SOMETHING i wanted to ask you what your opinion, Is,
- 32:11Speaker 5: Hollis but you, know do you think it's too? Much you,
- 32:15Speaker 5: know you're looking At Fernando mendoza and he's expected to
- 32:19Speaker 5: be the immediate starter for The Raiders Las Vegas. Raiders
- 32:22Speaker 5: he's going to be the centerpiece of their. Offense do
- 32:25Speaker 5: you think that's just too much to ask of?
- 32:28Speaker 4: Him it depends on what you have, Around like they
- 32:32Speaker 4: have the running back they drafted last. YEAR i don't
- 32:37Speaker 4: offensively as far as weapons far as tight ends and offensive.
- 32:40Speaker 4: Linement if they can get that to shake where they're
- 32:43Speaker 4: not dependent on him when he has twenty or fewer,
- 32:46Speaker 4: throws a game where he has a strong running, game
- 32:49Speaker 4: where they have maybe two or three running backs that
- 32:51Speaker 4: they can depend, on it could possibly. Work BUT i
- 32:54Speaker 4: JUST i don't see him as a guy who's going
- 32:56Speaker 4: to go out there and, just you, know be that.
- 32:59Speaker 2: Ringer he's.
- 33:00Speaker 5: Not it's not gonna save the. Franchise that's what.
- 33:03Speaker 2: He could be a good. Piece that's WHAT i was gonna.
- 33:05Speaker 4: SAY i was gonna that was the QUESTION i, had because,
- 33:09Speaker 4: really what you're looking for him to do is to
- 33:13Speaker 4: save or or quote turn it, around turn the whole program.
- 33:16Speaker 4: Around before that you can really turn the program around to,
- 33:21Speaker 4: me and you bring in a quarterback in a first,
- 33:23Speaker 4: round you got to have a solid, defense you. Know, Now,
- 33:27Speaker 4: yeah if you got a solid, defense now you got
- 33:30Speaker 4: a chance that that quarterback coming in might have a
- 33:33Speaker 4: chance now.
- 33:34Speaker 2: To really be able to.
- 33:35Speaker 4: Play but if he's got to keep getting thrown back in,
- 33:38Speaker 4: there BECAUSE i, mean you gotta look at it like,
- 33:42Speaker 4: this there are very very very Few Patrick. Mahomes there's
- 33:47Speaker 4: very few guys that you could just, say, okay, YEAH i,
- 33:51Speaker 4: mean to, ME i would Rank Patrick mahomes up there
- 33:54Speaker 4: with the greatest right. Now but there's very few guys
- 33:57Speaker 4: in which you're just going to, Say, okay we got To,
- 34:00Speaker 4: brady we got A Patrick. Mahomes we can make the
- 34:02Speaker 4: rest of. WORK i think the way you're gonna build
- 34:05Speaker 4: teams to, me you gotta start with. Defense you gotta
- 34:08Speaker 4: start with your offensive. Line you gotta get a solid running.
- 34:11Speaker 4: Back you have to build it like How seattle has
- 34:13Speaker 4: built their teams even when they Had Russell. Wilson, right
- 34:16Speaker 4: he's a he's a great maybe Borderline hall Of fame.
- 34:19Speaker 4: Quarterback but they had great, defenses they had a great running,
- 34:22Speaker 4: back they had a good offensive.
- 34:23Speaker 2: Line, well you have to build teams that. Way to,
- 34:25Speaker 2: me when did that? Stop?
- 34:26Speaker 4: Though like when did when did all of a? Sudden
- 34:29Speaker 4: And and you, KNOW i haven't really paid attention enough to, think, like,
- 34:33Speaker 4: well maybe it was three years, ago or maybe about
- 34:36Speaker 4: five years, ago maybe about ten years, Ago LIKE i
- 34:38Speaker 4: don't have any really true idea of really when all
- 34:42Speaker 4: of a sudden the quarterback was the key component compared
- 34:46Speaker 4: TO i, MEAN i think when you're when you're throwing
- 34:48Speaker 4: maybe forty fifty passes a, GAME i think just the
- 34:51Speaker 4: way offenses have have changed over the, years SO i
- 34:55Speaker 4: would say probably the early men of the early two,
- 34:57Speaker 4: thousands when you had like sort of more of the
- 34:59Speaker 4: s shot shot spread out when you're actually throwing fifty
- 35:03Speaker 4: sixty times a, Game AND i think that that sort
- 35:06Speaker 4: of changed. It BUT i BUT i But I'M i
- 35:08Speaker 4: would say this right, now not That i'm saying a
- 35:11Speaker 4: quarterback is definitely the center of your piece of your
- 35:14Speaker 4: program as far as football is. Concerned you got to
- 35:16Speaker 4: have that, guy but you got to have pieces around.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Him if you're AN.
- 35:19Speaker 4: Nfl it's better to build slow than try to just
- 35:22Speaker 4: gamble on a guy and just say, Hey because even
- 35:25Speaker 4: if you look at The patriots team right while they
- 35:28Speaker 4: Had Tom, brady they were well constructed all around, him
- 35:32Speaker 4: from special teams with defense to everything was well. Constructed
- 35:35Speaker 4: did he start right out of the? Shoot, No, NO
- 35:37Speaker 4: i didn't think so, either he said for a while
- 35:39Speaker 4: the blood.
- 35:39Speaker 5: Bloods, Yeah and that's the same situation That Todd simpson's walking.
- 35:44Speaker 5: Into don't you agree like that that's a GOOD i
- 35:46Speaker 5: just said, Earlier hollis THAT i felt like that's a
- 35:48Speaker 5: healthy thing to, do you.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Know, Uh BUT i think the difference With Todd simms
- 35:52Speaker 4: he's a first round. Quarterback With brady was like a
- 35:53Speaker 4: six or. Seven that's that's a little bit more.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Pressure, yeah but still, okay but go, ahead Because i'm
- 36:00Speaker 2: gonna go.
- 36:01Speaker 5: Back, Well i'm just gonna, say you, know he's a developmental.
- 36:04Speaker 5: Prospect it's a whole different scenario between him and you don't.
- 36:08Speaker 2: Think, so but you. Don't but, okay you're, right.
- 36:11Speaker 5: He's gonna be, said why did you draft.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Him in the first? Round?
- 36:15Speaker 4: Why why did you draft a developmental project in the first?
- 36:18Speaker 4: Round FACTS i agree with.
- 36:19Speaker 5: That because he has the talent. Too he's proven At
- 36:23Speaker 5: alabama and he Can and what If Matt stafford gets,
- 36:27Speaker 5: hurt you, know when you're starting quarterback gets hurt normally
- 36:29Speaker 5: in THE, nfl that playoff window just completely. True and
- 36:34Speaker 5: in this, case if they're having a successful season And
- 36:37Speaker 5: matt gets, hurt you, know and he's not able to,
- 36:39Speaker 5: play they, can they, can you, know put him.
- 36:41Speaker 4: In BUT i don't think HE'S i, mean if you're
- 36:44Speaker 4: starting fifteen games in, college fifteen sixty whatever he, STARTED
- 36:47Speaker 4: i think you just gonna See Anthony. RICHARDS i think
- 36:50Speaker 4: talent is one, thing but being able to like play
- 36:53Speaker 4: is another. Thing SO i just don't to, me that's a.
- 36:56Speaker 4: Reach that ten or fifteen second that that quarterback is
- 37:01Speaker 4: walking to the center or standing there looking at the
- 37:05Speaker 4: defense and then trying to figure out what they're. In
- 37:09Speaker 4: that's a major that's a that's a major. Thing and
- 37:15Speaker 4: and if you you can't be just a guy who
- 37:19Speaker 4: can throw the, ball you can't be just the guy
- 37:22Speaker 4: who played.
- 37:23Speaker 2: Quarterback i'm saying those guys between.
- 37:25Speaker 4: Yeah you, know and AND i think and AND i
- 37:29Speaker 4: really believe that that there's still the thought process Of
- 37:36Speaker 4: drafting quarterbacks early is the thing that's what we have
- 37:41Speaker 4: to do compared to how effective they're actually going to.
- 37:46Speaker 4: Be M, yeah AND i, THINK i, mean obviously there's
- 37:49Speaker 4: a money, component and you know you don't have to
- 37:51Speaker 4: get it all to. That BUT i just, think LIKE i,
- 37:53Speaker 4: SAID i think you're almost to me unless you just
- 37:57Speaker 4: got that, guy which is it's a combination of talent
- 38:01Speaker 4: and nobility and processing speed because LIKE i, said when
- 38:04Speaker 4: you're going from An alabama offense or whoever college offense
- 38:09Speaker 4: and just the verbage alone to what your college offensive
- 38:13Speaker 4: playing college first THE, nfl just the processing, speed what
- 38:18Speaker 4: you guys are doing on the back, end trying to
- 38:20Speaker 4: disguise coverages and figure out that it's all head games
- 38:23Speaker 4: and if you're not ready to do, that and then
- 38:26Speaker 4: you couple that which you don't really have the physical
- 38:28Speaker 4: ability to like get balls where they need to be
- 38:32Speaker 4: and all and a lot of that is dictated by
- 38:35Speaker 4: the speeding what you're, processing what you're.
- 38:38Speaker 2: Seeing and you.
- 38:39Speaker 4: Got to have guys At you got to have great
- 38:42Speaker 4: guys in the most critical, positions like you got to
- 38:45Speaker 4: have a pass. Rusher you've got to have a pass
- 38:47Speaker 4: rusher to get to that quarterback if you want to
- 38:49Speaker 4: shake him. Up if you if you don't have, that
- 38:52Speaker 4: you better have a great secondary to where and and
- 38:57Speaker 4: but if you've got receivers and you got a ligne
- 38:59Speaker 4: and you got a running, BACK i think you got
- 39:02Speaker 4: and you could tell me If i'm. WRONG i think
- 39:04Speaker 4: you got a great chance of being a good quarterback
- 39:07Speaker 4: and you may get time to maybe we've seen. It,
- 39:11Speaker 4: Yeah Sam, donald nobody he's like all. THAT i, MEAN
- 39:15Speaker 4: i thought he's a pretty good. Quarterback but but he
- 39:18Speaker 4: has some dog years With Sam fran and The carolina
- 39:21Speaker 4: and The jets and all those sort of. Things but
- 39:23Speaker 4: he was able to get on some good teams and
- 39:25Speaker 4: be a plug and play quarterback who could actually have
- 39:28Speaker 4: sustainable success because it wasn't all on. Him because to
- 39:31Speaker 4: your point About Todd, Simpson, man you being a first
- 39:34Speaker 4: round draft pick alone is so much pressure because it's
- 39:37Speaker 4: a part of that franchise that think you should be
- 39:39Speaker 4: starting to, think like by the.
- 39:41Speaker 5: If we're going to spend this, money to spend this
- 39:43Speaker 5: money then.
- 39:45Speaker 2: And where the money is?
- 39:46Speaker 4: Today, YEAH i mean you you really have to, Know
- 39:52Speaker 4: but can you KNOW i don't THINK i don't think
- 39:56Speaker 4: that you can really know not in that.
- 39:58Speaker 2: Position it's. Hard it just doesn't translate.
- 40:01Speaker 5: The, crapshoot it just. IS i, mean you can take
- 40:04Speaker 5: all the information you know from the from the, combines
- 40:07Speaker 5: you can you can look at the physical, ability you
- 40:09Speaker 5: can look at you, know their their mental, state the,
- 40:11Speaker 5: interviews but you know once they get in, behind you
- 40:14Speaker 5: know that that center at the, end at the end
- 40:16Speaker 5: THE nfl, arena you just don't know how they.
- 40:18Speaker 4: PERFORM i, mean you think of a guy Like Eli
- 40:21Speaker 4: Eli manny who buys the, statistics was a very mediocre.
- 40:25Speaker 4: Quarterback if you're just looking at raw, Numbers i'm looking
- 40:28Speaker 4: at intercept touchdown.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Blah blah blah blah.
- 40:29Speaker 4: Blah but in the biggest, moments that guy came. Alive
- 40:34Speaker 4: so it's like it's, like you, know do we do
- 40:36Speaker 4: we bitch a guy like?
- 40:37Speaker 2: That do we let him play? Like you just. Don't
- 40:39Speaker 2: you almost got to get into it to eat to even.
- 40:42Speaker 5: Know right to that point that we take the stage
- 40:45Speaker 5: to figure out whether or not.
- 40:48Speaker 4: We we got your point weeks a good we, got
- 40:50Speaker 4: we got away from they got As Tommy kramer kind
- 40:52Speaker 4: of faded out And i'm not even going to give
- 40:55Speaker 4: the quarterbacks names but we had we had three quarterbacks
- 41:01Speaker 4: that all three were like looking to to to.
- 41:05Speaker 2: Make the move to be the next starter as defensive.
- 41:10Speaker 4: Guys you, know we're mumbling over there, like well it
- 41:13Speaker 4: should be this, guy should be this, guy you, know
- 41:16Speaker 4: because we we we we see them and we had
- 41:19Speaker 4: seen them in drills and.
- 41:20Speaker 2: Stuff they go against, us and, man.
- 41:25Speaker 4: They ended up starting what we thought were the wrong
- 41:29Speaker 4: was the wrong quarterback because we thought the other guy was,
- 41:34Speaker 4: well that dude played. Well he got nicked up the
- 41:40Speaker 4: guy that we wanted. In we, thinking, okay, yeah he's.
- 41:42Speaker 4: Good that's all he. Needs he's all he needs is one. Shot,
- 41:45Speaker 4: man you talking about you talking about choking.
- 41:48Speaker 2: Up that's what it. Is.
- 41:50Speaker 4: Like it was like it was like the like the
- 41:54Speaker 4: first time you ever played, football you. Know AND i
- 41:58Speaker 4: mean he just looked so, new nervous and man in
- 42:01Speaker 4: practicing seven on seven and stuff like. That, man he
- 42:03Speaker 4: gun us. Down you, know he's completing. Passes but then,
- 42:07Speaker 4: man when those big lights came, on.
- 42:10Speaker 2: He just couldn't do.
- 42:12Speaker 4: It and that's another part of it that's kind of
- 42:14Speaker 4: like the piece like are you able, to Like Eli,
- 42:17Speaker 4: manning are you able to perform when the lights are, on,
- 42:20Speaker 4: like are you are you confident enough in yourself to
- 42:23Speaker 4: really do? That are you stable enough? Emotionally you? KNOW
- 42:26Speaker 4: i was listening to. Something it wasn't it was on
- 42:30Speaker 4: the show we had Manty leone psychology or psychologist he,
- 42:35Speaker 4: was and one of the things that he said was
- 42:37Speaker 4: that you have to take you can't take what happens, personally.
- 42:42Speaker 4: Right so WHAT i think what he meant from that
- 42:46Speaker 4: is that you have to take you out of.
- 42:49Speaker 1: It.
- 42:49Speaker 4: Right so when you're like processing, defense you you you
- 42:54Speaker 4: have a good, play you have a bad, play you
- 42:57Speaker 4: have to analyze it from the perspective of what's going
- 43:00Speaker 4: on and not insert yourself and your feelings and your
- 43:04Speaker 4: emotions into.
- 43:05Speaker 2: It and to, me that's a skill setting of.
- 43:07Speaker 4: Itself like A Tom brady you can, see Or Joe, montana,
- 43:11Speaker 4: right you can see when they're operating that, there or
- 43:14Speaker 4: even A peytment is probably the best. Example he's operating
- 43:18Speaker 4: almost from like a mathematical. Perspective he's analyzing exactly what's going,
- 43:23Speaker 4: on and he's figuring out a way to the like
- 43:27Speaker 4: you would always, say take what's given to, You you
- 43:30Speaker 4: know What i'm. Saying those type of mentality and some.
- 43:32Speaker 4: Guys they don't have the ability that if something's go,
- 43:35Speaker 4: wrong then it's then they they drown themselves in that.
- 43:39Speaker 4: Emotion and that's and that's a good. Point and and
- 43:43Speaker 4: and what you're talking about is you know when when you,
- 43:46Speaker 4: say take what they give, you every defensive coverage has
- 43:51Speaker 4: a has a weak spot and and there's always a
- 43:55Speaker 4: cute route somewhere in there too that the quarterback wants
- 44:00Speaker 4: to go to Right and sometimes you just have to
- 44:04Speaker 4: go to what they're giving, you which might be the
- 44:06Speaker 4: swing of the back or it might be just a
- 44:08Speaker 4: little short two yard three yard, pass maybe get five
- 44:12Speaker 4: yards out of. It but and here's the other part of.
- 44:14Speaker 4: It as a quarterback at THE nfl, level if you
- 44:18Speaker 4: are if they you guys are running a certain defense
- 44:21Speaker 4: and you're giving me. Something BUT i don't have anybody
- 44:23Speaker 4: going over. There DO i have the mental acuity to
- 44:26Speaker 4: send somebody over? There? Yes, yes in real, time not
- 44:29Speaker 4: LIKE i go to the sidelines and da da da da.
- 44:31Speaker 4: Da DO i have it in real time to, say,
- 44:33Speaker 4: oh oh this is what they?
- 44:34Speaker 2: Boom go? There?
- 44:36Speaker 4: Patrick, yes you, Know Peyton, manny they had that ability
- 44:41Speaker 4: to say hit there or LIKE i, said and if
- 44:44Speaker 4: you're just and again a lot of guys just. Aren't
- 44:47Speaker 4: and then there's like a whole physical component where you
- 44:49Speaker 4: have a big. Band if you Watch Being, big he
- 44:51Speaker 4: just plays with his whole. Body you know What i'm,
- 44:53Speaker 4: Saying he's bouncing people off Or Lamar jackson just using
- 44:57Speaker 4: his ability to do whatever he wants. To so like
- 45:00Speaker 4: it is a, difficult difficult position to evaluate because and
- 45:03Speaker 4: different personalities and EVEN i don't even say even, sizes
- 45:08Speaker 4: BUT i do think bigger is better now and with,
- 45:13Speaker 4: ATHLETICISM i don't.
- 45:17Speaker 5: THINK i don't think The raiders would say. THAT i,
- 45:19Speaker 5: Mean fernando is not that, big is?
- 45:21Speaker 2: He this is what six for six? Five he's. Not
- 45:24Speaker 2: he's not like a.
- 45:24Speaker 5: Big, Right he's not like A Lamar jackson.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Or BUT i would say it depends on play.
- 45:30Speaker 4: Style so MAYBE i MEAN i would BECAUSE i think
- 45:34Speaker 4: like for, EXAMPLE i always thought Like Doug flooty was, good,
- 45:37Speaker 4: right he just you, know he was. Playing he's playing
- 45:39Speaker 4: a different, era, Right but to, me like for, example
- 45:41Speaker 4: like A Kyler mary or like A Johnny, MANZIEL i
- 45:45Speaker 4: think they could, play BUT i don't think the play
- 45:47Speaker 4: style translates or as opposed To Russell. Wilson he purposely
- 45:52Speaker 4: he gained like twenty pounds because he, Knew, HEY i
- 45:55Speaker 4: can't just sit back and run, Aroun i'm gonna have
- 45:57Speaker 4: to take some hits and fits some guys.
- 45:58Speaker 2: On i'll say.
- 45:59Speaker 4: This i'll say this about some types of quarterbacks that
- 46:03Speaker 4: could be The Johnny manziel that you're not coming into
- 46:06Speaker 4: the because here's the here's the first. Problem you come.
- 46:09Speaker 4: In you're drafted by a. Team you come into that
- 46:12Speaker 4: team acting as though you to do like you already.
- 46:18Speaker 2: As a.
- 46:18Speaker 4: Rookie you Already, yeah huge mistake number, one because you
- 46:25Speaker 4: know there's This i'm carrying somebody's trade to you sitting
- 46:31Speaker 4: down AND i got to bring your tray over and
- 46:33Speaker 4: sit it down at, lunch, breakfast at. Dinner, okay those
- 46:38Speaker 4: are the types of. Things i'm carrying your shoulder pads
- 46:41Speaker 4: back to the locker room Because i'm a.
- 46:43Speaker 2: Rookie and that's what rookies. Do with the moment that
- 46:48Speaker 2: you get too big for.
- 46:49Speaker 5: That that's going to be an. Issue you got a.
- 46:52Speaker 2: Problem that's a whole. Difference you, know that's a whole nother.
- 46:57Speaker 4: Due and and AND i will say to any athlete
- 47:01Speaker 4: that's going to the next. Level you can have all
- 47:05Speaker 4: the arrogance that you want inside of, you but you
- 47:09Speaker 4: can't show that to guys who've already put in time
- 47:13Speaker 4: because they don't like. It and and and even if you,
- 47:16Speaker 4: quote if you're going to prove, it you better prove
- 47:19Speaker 4: it in a.
- 47:20Speaker 2: Hurry AND i.
- 47:21Speaker 4: Think that's problem with maybe just maybe that's a cultural,
- 47:24Speaker 4: thing because it's it's okay just to beat a. Rookie it's,
- 47:27Speaker 4: okay it's. Okay you don't have to like beat. THEM i,
- 47:32Speaker 4: mean we know the pro part of the. Process we
- 47:36Speaker 4: know you the, man we know you the. Man, okay
- 47:38Speaker 4: we know you got some. Talent but, bro just come,
- 47:40Speaker 4: here be one of the. Guys it's nothing wrong with.
- 47:43Speaker 2: Being one of the rookies and grab my trade and
- 47:45Speaker 2: they can put it. Up, man you don't have to
- 47:47Speaker 2: do all.
- 47:47Speaker 5: That AND.
- 47:51Speaker 4: I really Do i'm glad you said, that BECAUSE i
- 47:54Speaker 4: really do think that some of the some of the
- 47:56Speaker 4: most talented players are not able to do. That they're
- 48:01Speaker 4: not they're not patient, enough they're not okay to let
- 48:06Speaker 4: the work take care of. Itself just keep. Working somebody's
- 48:10Speaker 4: gonna see. You something's gonna. Happen something's gonna be. Possibve
- 48:12Speaker 4: you ain't got to talk about. It, yeah you don't
- 48:14Speaker 4: really have to do all. That AND i think if
- 48:17Speaker 4: you do, that you know because, again like you look
- 48:19Speaker 4: At Johnny manziel and all that kind of, stuff like
- 48:23Speaker 4: do you need all? That and then then the other
- 48:25Speaker 4: part of that too is like again just going specifically the,
- 48:29Speaker 4: quarterback AND i would probably say this may be any position,
- 48:31Speaker 4: now like you gotta be in that field.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Room, oh you better be in that field.
- 48:35Speaker 4: Room and you better understand how to Do LIKE i,
- 48:37Speaker 4: said like, quarterback you are A ceo of a major
- 48:41Speaker 4: company and you better act like.
- 48:42Speaker 5: One that's that's so. True well what did you guys
- 48:47Speaker 5: think ABOUT. U. R? Bernard that the guy From nigeria
- 48:51Speaker 5: that's never played? Football but he Was, okay let's just
- 48:55Speaker 5: do we have that, Clip? Matt can we play?
- 48:57Speaker 2: It?
- 48:57Speaker 4: Okay, well now witness it's being made.
- 49:03Speaker 2: With the two hundred and fifty fust. Fit in the
- 49:07Speaker 2: twenty twenty SIX.
- 49:09Speaker 4: Nfl, drama The Philadelphia eagles select who are but no.
- 49:18Speaker 2: Defensive? Tackle international Puff Way? Program let's, go.
- 49:26Speaker 4: Who Are?
- 49:27Speaker 7: Bernard from The International pathway program that opens the doors
- 49:31Speaker 7: to football people across the globe and This nigerian. PROSPECTS i,
- 49:37Speaker 7: mean he absolutely wow people at a scouting.
- 49:41Speaker 4: Combine, okay, okay first of, All i'm impressed that you
- 49:46Speaker 4: got that name.
- 49:47Speaker 2: RIGHT i.
- 49:50Speaker 5: Had to look it. Up i'm not going to sit.
- 49:51Speaker 5: Here you are speak there so shut out to.
- 49:54Speaker 4: YOU i. WAS i was gonna sit here no matter
- 49:57Speaker 4: how long we have to sit here till SOMEBODY'S i just.
- 50:01Speaker 2: Said but, NO i got that.
- 50:02Speaker 5: Part, YEAH i have to look it. Up but he's
- 50:05Speaker 5: never played.
- 50:06Speaker 4: Football, guys six, four three hundred and six. Pence, okay
- 50:11Speaker 4: have you seen him with a six?
- 50:13Speaker 2: Pack, yeah.
- 50:16Speaker 5: Unbelievable he. Has he's like six percent body three when you.
- 50:21Speaker 4: Start when you start somebody's weight with, three you automatically
- 50:25Speaker 4: have a picture of what that looks. Like that ain't the.
- 50:27Speaker 4: Picture that ain't the. Picture and he runs a four
- 50:29Speaker 4: to six forty and there's some dvs that can't run.
- 50:36Speaker 4: That he runs a six four. Forty he had a
- 50:39Speaker 4: forty inch, vertical he had eleven foot broad jump at.
- 50:43Speaker 4: Two at the two hundred and fifty first, Pick i'm
- 50:45Speaker 4: drafting him. Too he getting a pick for, Me But i'm.
- 50:48Speaker 5: Shocked it's not the very last. Pick but it's not,
- 50:53Speaker 5: mister it's at.
- 50:54Speaker 2: The bottles at the.
- 50:55Speaker 4: BOTTOM i knew it was. Closed here's my only here's
- 51:00Speaker 4: my only problem with. It with no football, conversation like no,
- 51:12Speaker 4: terms like he doesn't know any of the, terms any
- 51:15Speaker 4: of the just?
- 51:17Speaker 2: Position does he know the? Positions all those kinds of.
- 51:21Speaker 4: Things he came through the international, program SO i think
- 51:24Speaker 4: he has some baseline. Understanding so he's not a total.
- 51:28Speaker 4: Novice he never played in a competitive he might have
- 51:33Speaker 4: played flag or did something.
- 51:35Speaker 2: Similar but he's got Any if.
- 51:37Speaker 4: He's got any kind of any kind of particular skill,
- 51:41Speaker 4: set he's going to be he he is going to
- 51:46Speaker 4: quickly become to, me one of the most dominant players.
- 51:51Speaker 4: Wherever and you put him at a defensive, end you
- 51:54Speaker 4: put him at a defensive, tackle you can just tell
- 51:56Speaker 4: him go and just tell him go and go.
- 51:58Speaker 2: Ahead i'm, Sorry i'm just saying, point, like who's gonna block?
- 52:01Speaker 5: Him, Yeah but here's the here's the good thing about, it. Guys,
- 52:05Speaker 5: yeah he's never played, football but there's no bad habits
- 52:07Speaker 5: to break, either. Right, yeah he's he's. FRESH i, mean
- 52:10Speaker 5: they're gonna teach him everything that he needs to know
- 52:13Speaker 5: and and you, know and and.
- 52:15Speaker 4: And one of the one of the good questions about
- 52:17Speaker 4: that piece Of alisa is, LIKE i bet you he's
- 52:22Speaker 4: excited about learning the. Game, yes because he you, know
- 52:25Speaker 4: think about, it like you, know every level that you go,
- 52:28Speaker 4: to you you're you're excited about.
- 52:29Speaker 2: Learning a little bit more about the.
- 52:31Speaker 4: Game he's just walking into the game as a grown,
- 52:35Speaker 4: man bigger than most, players more athletic than almost every
- 52:40Speaker 4: player that's his, size and he gets a chance to
- 52:43Speaker 4: learn the.
- 52:44Speaker 5: Game if you saw the, VIDEO i, mean his smile
- 52:46Speaker 5: just it was it was unbelievable how happy he. Was
- 52:49Speaker 5: And i'm just gonna read this quote real quick and
- 52:51Speaker 5: then you, guys can you, know take it where you.
- 52:53Speaker 5: Want but this is. Verbatim it's a dream come true
- 52:56Speaker 5: for me Because i've worked hard for. This i've not played,
- 52:59Speaker 5: football But i've gone through some drills that made me
- 53:03Speaker 5: Believe i'm going to get better every. Day so he's
- 53:05Speaker 5: got the right attitude going in.
- 53:07Speaker 4: It just that if you, again, physicality LIKE i, said
- 53:10Speaker 4: if you're six, four three hundred plus pounds with a six,
- 53:13Speaker 4: pack nobody fat can run a four six. Forties you
- 53:16Speaker 4: have the physical. Metrics it's just the only. Thing you
- 53:20Speaker 4: need two things to be effective d. Lineman if you
- 53:23Speaker 4: already have the physical, ability you got to have the.
- 53:26Speaker 4: Dog you got to be a dog at defensive lignment
- 53:29Speaker 4: to really be. Good and for a defensive, linement you
- 53:34Speaker 4: got to have a. Motor you can't run in. NO.
- 53:36Speaker 4: V four in THE nfl. Level you got to have
- 53:38Speaker 4: A v six or, better preferably A v.
- 53:40Speaker 2: Eight, see AND i THINK i love. THAT i think that.
- 53:42Speaker 4: HE i think he's gonna have the motor BECAUSE i don't. Know,
- 53:46Speaker 4: well here's Here's that's What i'm going to, say is
- 53:49Speaker 4: because if nothing, else because let's just, say IF i
- 53:52Speaker 4: was putting on the, LINE i was on the line
- 53:53Speaker 4: AND i was my, size, Bro i'm gonna be as
- 53:56Speaker 4: fast AS i can be BECAUSE i don't want you
- 53:58Speaker 4: to HAVE i don't want.
- 53:58Speaker 2: You to get no hands on.
- 53:59Speaker 4: Me so if nothing else him if he's trying to
- 54:03Speaker 4: get to the quarterback and you tell him get to the.
- 54:05Speaker 4: Quarterback so Now i'm trying to get to the. Quarterback
- 54:09Speaker 4: now you may be blocking. Me but now ONCE i
- 54:13Speaker 4: ALL i got to do is start to start to
- 54:14Speaker 4: figure out how to get my hands on you and
- 54:16Speaker 4: then get you out of the. Way you say that
- 54:19Speaker 4: has though we ain't got fifty million dollars left and
- 54:22Speaker 4: right tackles out, THERE.
- 54:24Speaker 5: I know he's.
- 54:25Speaker 4: Got the thing, is once those, tackles they're gonna get
- 54:30Speaker 4: their hands on, you and they're gonna pitch you in
- 54:32Speaker 4: the dirt a bunch of. Times and now your motive
- 54:34Speaker 4: is gonna say that check engine light might come on after.
- 54:38Speaker 4: You you might have a blown, gasket a tire might be,
- 54:41Speaker 4: out the battery might be.
- 54:43Speaker 2: Dead but you better.
- 54:44Speaker 4: Come you gotta keep coming service. Required and if you
- 54:49Speaker 4: ain't never experienced, That, see that's the he's.
- 54:52Speaker 2: Gone that's the key. Piece he's got to learn.
- 54:56Speaker 4: It but if if he, can if he can, stay
- 54:59Speaker 4: and and there's no way you're not gonna get. Caught
- 55:02Speaker 4: sooner or, later you're gonna get. Caught ain't no, joke,
- 55:06Speaker 4: Right and they gonna want to test, You, oh.
- 55:08Speaker 2: They gonna want to.
- 55:09Speaker 4: See this is the perfect, case the perfect case of
- 55:13Speaker 4: sending him to the u F. L this is the
- 55:15Speaker 4: perfect case because with a quarterback is big. Money you
- 55:18Speaker 4: can't do that because you can't risk getting. Hurt, Right
- 55:20Speaker 4: but a defensive, alignment the threshold is a little bit,
- 55:23Speaker 4: less and this will be the perfect case for him
- 55:26Speaker 4: to get about five or six games in against live
- 55:30Speaker 4: competition to send him down.
- 55:32Speaker 2: There you hold this, Right we're gonna send you down.
- 55:34Speaker 4: There we're gonna get you some reps and some game time,
- 55:37Speaker 4: reps and we're gonna we're gonna see what what.
- 55:39Speaker 5: You this perfect.
- 55:43Speaker 2: CASE i will give you.
- 55:45Speaker 4: That as bad AS i hate, To i'm gonna get you.
- 55:50Speaker 4: That AND i think that would be ideal for him
- 55:55Speaker 4: because he's he's able to learn literally play by play
- 56:00Speaker 4: and get you some confidence, too because LIKE i, said
- 56:02Speaker 4: if you in, practice you going against the left or right,
- 56:04Speaker 4: tackle who know what they're. Doing, again they can negate
- 56:07Speaker 4: a lot of their speed in the athletic ability and the.
- 56:10Speaker 4: Strength so your, face your face gonna be in the
- 56:12Speaker 4: dirt a bunch of. Times here's here's WHAT i. THINK
- 56:15Speaker 4: i don't think that they. Can they're used to.
- 56:17Speaker 2: The, speed but the, strength and he's not.
- 56:27Speaker 4: So to the contact in which the offensive lineman will
- 56:30Speaker 4: have with. Him that will be something that Would but
- 56:32Speaker 4: What i'm, saying you, know that's where he's gonna.
- 56:34Speaker 2: Be you, know LIKE i, know track and workout.
- 56:37Speaker 4: Speed and game speed is, different different weight rule strength
- 56:41Speaker 4: and field strength is. Different so, again you may be
- 56:45Speaker 4: having all those measurables and all that stuff on the,
- 56:47Speaker 4: workout which is, cool we need, That but once you
- 56:50Speaker 4: get on the, field it's a different it's a different
- 56:52Speaker 4: play and that's where your heart and your motor come.
- 56:55Speaker 5: In if he makes, It i'm gonna get A banard
- 56:57Speaker 5: jersey and around have that about become An eagles.
- 57:03Speaker 4: Fan, well, well we're about to wrap it. Up holish
- 57:07Speaker 4: you got, Anything i'm, Good i'm.
- 57:10Speaker 2: Good all, Right, well ladies and, gentlemen we hope you
- 57:12Speaker 2: enjoyed the show and we're going to get out of.
- 57:13Speaker 3: Here
