- 0:03Welcome to the Daily Quote, a podcast designed to kick start
- 0:07your day in a positive way. I'm your host Anna McGivern for
- 0:11July 16th now. Today is National Hot Dog Day, a
- 0:15celebration of one of North America's most iconic and
- 0:18enduring comfort foods. First introduced to the United
- 0:22States by German immigrants in the 1800s, the hot dog became a
- 0:27staple at ballparks, barbecues and St. corners.
- 0:31It's more than just a quick bite.
- 0:33It's a symbol of summer, nostalgia and simple pleasures.
- 0:38And it used to be called the Frankfurter.
- 0:41But somewhere along the line, the name Hot Dog became popular.
- 0:46Some say it was due to Germany falling into conflict with the
- 0:49US so they made a more American sounding name.
- 0:53Kind of like how they tried to change French fries to Freedom
- 0:56fries a while back when France got out of line with the United
- 1:00States. Or how in Canada right now, as a
- 1:05result of the Taco tariff BS, the Americano has suddenly
- 1:10become a Canadiano. Anyway, in honor of today,
- 1:15here's a fitting quote from newspaper columnist Doug Larson,
- 1:19who had a talent for finding wisdom in everyday life.
- 1:23He once said life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds
- 1:28if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.
- 1:33Doug Larson wrote for the Green Bay Press Gazette for over 30
- 1:36years, where his syndicated column offered witty, reflective
- 1:40takes on life's small but meaningful details.
- 1:44His words often blended humor and subtle truths like this one,
- 1:49which captures the irresistible allure of comfort food.
- 1:54Now, while Hot Dog Day might inspire some folks to fire up
- 1:59the grill or seek out their favorite St. vendor, I'm
- 2:03probably going to sit this one out this year.
- 2:06We had more than our fair share of hot dogs on a couple of
- 2:10recent camping trips and after the trips.
- 2:13Because, you know, can't let a good Wiener go bad.
- 2:17Let's just say I've hit my hot dog quota for the month.
- 2:21Still, whether you're indulging today or just smiling at the
- 2:25memory of your last perfectly charred dog, here's to the
- 2:29little joys that make summer feel like summer.
- 2:34Happy National Hot Dog Day, that's going to do it.
- 2:37For now, I'm Andrew McGivern signing off for today, but I'll
- 2:42be back tomorrow. Same pod time, same pod station
- 2:49with another daily quote.
