- 0:12Hello friends, it's Shawn here and it is Thursday.
- 0:17It is Maundy Thursday and I am so grateful that on this day,
- 0:23this busy day for many people before a long weekend with a lot
- 0:27on your plate. I bet as you try to get things
- 0:29wrapped up, I'm so grateful that you have taken out this time
- 0:35that you and I can read God's Word, that God's spirit can move
- 0:41in us as we we witness. We witness these events in the
- 0:46lead up to Easter. And today's Bible reading is the
- 0:51morning Thursday Bible reading. We will read about Jesus and his
- 0:54friends having that supper, about that journey of Jesus
- 0:59through his arrest and that very, very long night that he
- 1:03must endure before Good Friday. And that is today's reading.
- 1:07And it is a long one, and it is a hard one.
- 1:12But we read this today knowing, knowing that this is not the end
- 1:16of the story and knowing that all this happens because you, my
- 1:21friend and I, we are loved people.
- 1:27We all loved people. I got nothing.
- 1:32I got nothing to say this. Yeah, this is a big chapter.
- 1:37This is a big story. This is a big moment in the
- 1:41history of time and space where the God of the universe hands
- 1:46himself over for us. So let's read it.
- 1:51Mark Chapter 14. It was two days before Passover
- 2:06and the Festival of Unleavened Bread.
- 2:08The leading priests and the teachers of religious law were
- 2:11still looking for an opportunity to capture Jesus secretly and
- 2:15kill him, but not during the Passover celebration, they
- 2:19agreed, or the people may riot. Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany
- 2:25at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy.
- 2:29While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful
- 2:33alabaster jar of expensive perfume made from Essence of
- 2:37nard. She broke open the jar and
- 2:41poured the perfume over his head.
- 2:44Some of those at the table were indignant.
- 2:47Why waste such expensive perfume?
- 2:50They asked. It could have been sold for a
- 2:53year's wages and the money given to the poor, so they scolded her
- 2:57harshly. But Jesus replied, leave her
- 3:02alone. Why criticise her for doing such
- 3:05a good thing to me? You will always have the poor
- 3:08among you, and you can help them whenever you want to, but you
- 3:12will not always have me. She has done what she could and
- 3:17has anointed my body for burial ahead of time.
- 3:21I tell you the truth, wherever the good news is preached
- 3:24throughout the world, this woman's deed will be remembered
- 3:28and discussed. Then Judas Iscariot, one of the
- 3:3312 disciples, went to the leading priests to arrange to
- 3:37betray Jesus to them. They were delighted when they
- 3:40heard why he had come, and they promised to give him money.
- 3:44So he began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus on
- 3:48the first day of the Festival of Unleavened Bread.
- 3:52When the Passover lamb was sacrificed, Jesus disciples
- 3:55asked him, where do you want us to go?
- 3:58To prepare the Passover meal for you.
- 4:01So Jesus sent two of them into Jerusalem with these
- 4:04instructions. As you go into the city, a man
- 4:08carrying a pitcher of water will meet you.
- 4:11Follow him at the house. He enters, say to the owner.
- 4:15The teacher asks where is the guest room where I can eat the
- 4:19Passover meal with my disciples. He will take you upstairs to a
- 4:24large room that is already set up.
- 4:27That is where you should prepare our meal.
- 4:30So the two disciples went into the city and found everything
- 4:34just as Jesus had said, and they prepared the Passover meal
- 4:37there. In the evening, Jesus arrived
- 4:41with the 12. As they were at the table
- 4:45eating, Jesus said, I tell you the truth.
- 4:49One of you eating with me here will betray me greatly
- 4:54distressed, Each one asked in turn.
- 4:57Am I the one? He replied.
- 5:00It is one of you 12, who is eating from this bowl with me.
- 5:05For the Son of Man must die, as the Scriptures declared long
- 5:09ago. But how terrible it will be for
- 5:12the one who betrays him. It would be far better for the
- 5:16man if he had never been born as they were eating.
- 5:22Jesus took some bread and blessed it, and he broke it in
- 5:25pieces and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take it, for
- 5:29this is my body. And he took a cup of wine and
- 5:33gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them, and they all
- 5:37drank from it. And he said to them, This is my
- 5:41blood, which confirms the covenant between God and his
- 5:44people. It is poured out as a sacrifice
- 5:48for many. I tell you the truth, I will not
- 5:51drink wine again until the day I drink it new in the Kingdom of
- 5:56God. Then they sang at him and went
- 6:00out to the Mount of Olives. On the way Jesus told them, all
- 6:06of you will desert me, for the scriptures say God will strike
- 6:11the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered.
- 6:15But after I am raised from the dead, I will go ahead of you to
- 6:19Galilee and meet you there, Peter said to him, Even if
- 6:23everyone else deserts you. Oh, I never will.
- 6:26Jesus replied. I tell you the truth, Peter,
- 6:30This very night before the rooster crows twice.
- 6:34You will deny three times that you even know me.
- 6:38No, Peter declared emphatically. Even if I have to die with you,
- 6:43I will never deny you. And all the others vowed the
- 6:48same. They went to the olive Grove
- 6:52called Gethsemane, and Jesus said sit here while I go and
- 6:56pray. He took Peter, James and John
- 6:59with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.
- 7:03He told them. My soul is crushed with grief to
- 7:07the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with
- 7:11me. He went on a little farther and
- 7:15fell to the ground. He prayed that if it were
- 7:18possible, the awful hour awaiting him might pass him by.
- 7:24ABBA, Father, he cried out. Everything is possible for you.
- 7:29Please take this cup of suffering away from me.
- 7:34Yet I want your will to be done, not mine.
- 7:40Then he returned and found the disciples asleep.
- 7:43He said to Peter. Simon, are you asleep?
- 7:48Couldn't you watch with me, even one hour?
- 7:51Keep watching. Pray so that you will not give
- 7:55in to temptation, for the Spirit is willing but the body is weak.
- 8:01Then Jesus left them again and prayed the same prayer as
- 8:04before. When he returned to them again,
- 8:07he found them sleeping, for they couldn't keep their eyes open
- 8:12and they didn't know what to say.
- 8:14When he returned to them the third time, he said go ahead and
- 8:18sleep, have your rest. But no, The time has come.
- 8:24The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners up.
- 8:28Let's get going. Look, my betrayer is here.
- 8:33And immediately, even as Jesus said this, Judas, one of the 12
- 8:38disciples, arrived with a crowd of men armed with swords and
- 8:42clubs. They had been sent by the
- 8:45leading priests, the teachers of religious law, and the elders.
- 8:49The traitor Judas had given them a prearranged signal.
- 8:54You'll know which one to arrest when I greet him with a kiss.
- 8:58Then you can take him away under guard.
- 9:01As soon as they arrived, Judas walked up to Jesus.
- 9:05Rabbi, He exclaimed and gave him the kiss.
- 9:10Then the others grabbed Jesus and arrested him.
- 9:13But one of the men with Jesus pulled out a sword and struck
- 9:16the high priest, slave, slashing off his ear.
- 9:20Jesus asked them, Am I some dangerous revolutionary that
- 9:24you've come with swords and clubs to arrest me?
- 9:27Why didn't you arrest me in the temple?
- 9:30I was there among you teaching every day, but these things are
- 9:34happening to fulfil what the Scriptures say about me.
- 9:38Then all his disciples deserted him and ran away.
- 9:43One young man following behind was clothed only in a long linen
- 9:48shirt. When the mob tried to grab him,
- 9:50he slipped out of his shirt and ran away naked.
- 9:56They took Jesus to the High Priest's home, where the leading
- 9:58priests, the elders and the teachers of religious law had
- 10:02gathered. Meanwhile, Peter followed him at
- 10:04a distance and went right into the High Priest's courtyard.
- 10:09There he sat with the guards, warming himself by the fire.
- 10:12Inside, the leading priests and the entire High Council were
- 10:17trying to find evidence against Jesus so they could put him to
- 10:21death, but they couldn't find any men.
- 10:24Many false witnesses spoke against him, but they
- 10:27contradicted each other. Finally, some men stood up and
- 10:31gave this false testimony. We heard him say, I will destroy
- 10:35this temple made with human hands and in three days I will
- 10:39build another made without human hands.
- 10:42But even then they didn't get their story straight.
- 10:46Then the High priest stood up before the others and asked
- 10:48Jesus, Well, aren't you going to answer these charges?
- 10:54What do you have to say for yourself?
- 10:56But Jesus was silent and made no reply.
- 11:00Then the high priest asked him, Are you the Messiah, the Son of
- 11:04the Blessed One? Jesus said, I am, and you will
- 11:10see the Son of Man seated in the place of power at God's right
- 11:15hand and coming on the clouds of heaven.
- 11:19Then the priest tore his clothing to show his horror and
- 11:23said, why do we need other witnesses?
- 11:26You have all heard his blasphemy.
- 11:29What is your verdict? Guilty.
- 11:33They all cried. He deserves to die.
- 11:37Then some of them began to spit at him, and they blindfolded him
- 11:41and beat him with their fists proper side to us.
- 11:45They jeered and the guards slapped him as they took him
- 11:48away. Meanwhile, Peter was in the
- 11:52courtyard below. One of the servant girls who
- 11:55worked for the high priest came by and noticed Peter warming
- 11:58himself by the fire. She looked at him closely and
- 12:01said you were one of those with Jesus of Nazareth, but Peter
- 12:07denied it. I don't know what you're talking
- 12:09about, he said, and he went out to the entryway.
- 12:13Just then, a rooster crowed When the servant girl saw him
- 12:18standing there. She began telling the others
- 12:21this man is definitely one of them, but Peter denied it again.
- 12:26A little later, some of the other bystanders confronted
- 12:29Peter and said you must be one of them because you are a
- 12:33Galilean. Peter swore a curse on me if I'm
- 12:37lying. I don't know this man you're
- 12:39talking about. And immediately the rooster
- 12:43crowed. The second time, suddenly Jesus
- 12:47words flashed through Peter's mind before the rooster crows
- 12:51twice. You will deny three times that
- 12:55you even know me, and he broke down and wept.
- 13:11Jesus, it staggers us. It blows our mind that your
- 13:15whole life, you knew that this was coming.
- 13:19Your whole life, you knew that this was your mission, that you
- 13:24willingly walk into that den of Vipers, that terribly unfair
- 13:31trap. Without even trying to defend
- 13:34yourself, you hand yourself over for us so that we can be safe,
- 13:44so that we can be wholly and blameless before the Almighty
- 13:48God. You walk in, eyes wide open and
- 13:55with your heart full of love for us are we worship You, our God
- 14:05of great love and sacrifice. Let me pray all these things in
- 14:11your holy precious name Jesus. Amen.
