- 0:09Speaker 1: What's up, everybody.
- 0:10Speaker 2: Welcome back to another episode of Bucko Territory, presented to
- 0:13Speaker 2: you by the Foul Territory Network. I'm Noah Hiles, joining
- 0:16Speaker 2: me as always oh my co host Josh Harrison, and
- 0:19Speaker 2: Platinum Key aka Mark. We have a special Tuesday edition
- 0:23Speaker 2: of Bucko Territory, no Wednesday mail Bag this week. It's
- 0:26Speaker 2: just gonna be the Tuesday Trade deadline recap show. We
- 0:30Speaker 2: were recording this Monday evening at eight o'clock Eastern time.
- 0:34Speaker 2: I just filed my column for the Post Gazette, which
- 0:37Speaker 2: you should totally read. I also just got off a
- 0:39Speaker 2: zoom with Ben Cherrington, which all the media we're on.
- 0:42Speaker 2: Mark is just got done doing his laughs of celebration
- 0:46Speaker 2: because the Pirates finally addressed the bullpen and Josh joined
- 0:49Speaker 2: us too, so we've.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Got a lot to go on.
- 0:53Speaker 2: The Pirates made three really interesting moves on the final
- 0:57Speaker 2: day before the deadline. They acquired Luke Weaver, they acquired Kirbyates,
- 1:02Speaker 2: and they acquired Lake Boker. We're gonna break down all
- 1:05Speaker 2: three of those moves, but before we do, guys just
- 1:07Speaker 2: want to get your overall thoughts on the Pirates trade
- 1:11Speaker 2: deadline activities. They in the end add four right handers
- 1:16Speaker 2: to this bullpen. Looks like Carmon Machinsky's moving to the
- 1:19Speaker 2: starting rotation now that Mitch Keller, as they just announced,
- 1:22Speaker 2: will be out for the rest of the year. So guys,
- 1:25Speaker 2: what do you think for new righties? It's a brand
- 1:28Speaker 2: new bullpen for this team.
- 1:30Speaker 3: Yeah, go ahead.
- 1:32Speaker 4: It It needed some rewiring, and you know, I think
- 1:36Speaker 4: they addressed in a lot of ways. And as you mentioned,
- 1:41Speaker 4: Mitch Keller went you know, went down, so I think
- 1:44Speaker 4: that also boosted it. Knowing that, you know, given you know,
- 1:48Speaker 4: what Mitch was undergoing, they addressed the need. And when
- 1:53Speaker 4: I saw the moves come across, it was, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 4: pretty exciting to see, you know, them making some moves.
- 1:58Speaker 5: Obviously to a US a bullpen that needed some help.
- 2:02Speaker 4: So initial reaction was, Okay, they addressed something that was
- 2:05Speaker 4: a dire need from the beginning, and we'll see how
- 2:10Speaker 4: itppens out. But first, first initial reaction was they got
- 2:13Speaker 4: some guys that you know, definitely pick your interest.
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm really happy. It was a bit of a
- 2:21Speaker 3: stressful day just because the pirates waited until quite literally
- 2:25Speaker 3: almost the last minute, and so you're sitting there just
- 2:30Speaker 3: being like, are are they gonna make a move. You're
- 2:32Speaker 3: seeing all these other trades happen. The stove was really hot,
- 2:36Speaker 3: and all of a sudden you start hearing the rumors like, oh,
- 2:39Speaker 3: Luke Weaver, Pirates getting close, and then it happened, and
- 2:43Speaker 3: I am just I'm over the moon right now. This
- 2:46Speaker 3: this bullpen needed a shot in the arm. They got
- 2:48Speaker 3: three of them and four of them if you're counting
- 2:51Speaker 3: to vall as well, so it's completely revamped. Like you said, Noah,
- 2:57Speaker 3: very very exciting from a Pirates fan perspective. I've seen
- 3:00Speaker 3: a lot of people that are very very pleasantly surprised,
- 3:03Speaker 3: or not surprised but pleased, I should say, with how
- 3:07Speaker 3: this trade deadline went. Maybe one piece short, like if
- 3:09Speaker 3: you wanted a bat, but I mean, if you're gonna
- 3:13Speaker 3: miss on one thing, you couldn't miss on the bullpen
- 3:15Speaker 3: and getting Luke Weaver to add to this back end,
- 3:19Speaker 3: just yeah, that's gonna be a huge help. Or are
- 3:22Speaker 3: your thoughts Noah, Yeah, I just.
- 3:25Speaker 1: I mean overall, I agree.
- 3:26Speaker 2: I mean, I think the only thing that keeps this
- 3:28Speaker 2: from an A plus is the fact that they didn't
- 3:30Speaker 2: add a starter, although they technically did with Carmen exactly right,
- 3:34Speaker 2: and they added so many right handers that, like, I
- 3:37Speaker 2: don't see how you could have kept Carmen in the
- 3:39Speaker 2: bullpen with all of this else.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I mean, they could have, but they would have had
- 3:43Speaker 1: to use them in a role anyway. So there's that
- 3:47Speaker 1: part of it. But also just like looking what they
- 3:49Speaker 1: gave up.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I wrote about this extensively, and I also I feel,
- 3:54Speaker 2: like we've talked about on the show last year, one
- 3:57Speaker 2: of their top priorities at the deadline was just strength
- 4:00Speaker 2: than the lower levels of the farm system, and a
- 4:03Speaker 2: handful of prospects that they acquired last year at last
- 4:06Speaker 2: year's deadline were used to make this year's team better,
- 4:09Speaker 2: the most notable being Sammy Stefora, the number nine prospect.
- 4:12Speaker 2: The only top ten prospect that they moved was used
- 4:15Speaker 2: to acquire Luke Weaver, and the Mets liked this guy
- 4:19Speaker 2: so much that they ate a huge chunk of weavers
- 4:22Speaker 2: salary to get him. And if I told you at
- 4:26Speaker 2: the beginning of July that this is what they would
- 4:28Speaker 2: get without giving up only you know two of their
- 4:32Speaker 2: top twenty. The other guy was Omar Alfonso and the
- 4:35Speaker 2: Deval deal and Alfonso's going to be Rule five eligible
- 4:38Speaker 2: at the end of this year, and he was not
- 4:39Speaker 2: getting added to this forty man so they were going
- 4:42Speaker 2: to lose him anyway, potentially to the Rule five draft.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And then everything else. I mean, one of the guys
- 4:47Speaker 2: in the Bednar return went in the Bocker package, and
- 4:51Speaker 2: I just and they essentially flipped Alika Williams for Kirby Yates.
- 4:55Speaker 2: The guy that they got in return for Alika Williams
- 4:58Speaker 2: is what they used to get the one rental player here.
- 5:03Speaker 3: For Luke Weaver.
- 5:04Speaker 1: Yeah, to Brian Hayes for Luke Weaver is a remarkable return.
- 5:09Speaker 2: But overall, you look at it, you give up hardly
- 5:11Speaker 2: anything from your farm system, and the one significant prospect
- 5:14Speaker 2: that you did give up is a shortstop.
- 5:16Speaker 1: You got shortstop covered for a long time, so.
- 5:18Speaker 2: That's gonna be okay. So you didn't give up a
- 5:20Speaker 2: lot of prospect capital. You didn't really add any salary
- 5:23Speaker 2: at all, which you know some fans can take a
- 5:26Speaker 2: gripe with. But overall, I mean, they kind of did
- 5:28Speaker 2: it efficiently at least, and yeah, they followed their plan
- 5:33Speaker 2: from last year. There's just a lot to like. Three
- 5:35Speaker 2: of these four guys have at least one more year
- 5:37Speaker 2: of remaining control. Bokers under control through twenty thirty, and
- 5:41Speaker 2: three of these four guys have pitched in the postseason,
- 5:45Speaker 2: which is the clear goal that they have now backed
- 5:48Speaker 2: up twice, once in the offseason and once in the
- 5:51Speaker 2: regular season now with this trade deadline. So that's my
- 5:54Speaker 2: analysis on the overall thing. But really what makes this
- 5:59Speaker 2: a good deadline for the Pirates is Luke Weaver. If
- 6:02Speaker 2: they get Baker and if they get Yates and Dovall,
- 6:05Speaker 2: you feel fine. But Baker's able to be what Boker's
- 6:09Speaker 2: going to be, which is essentially last year's Karmen Majinski,
- 6:12Speaker 2: and Yates is able to be essentially a right handed
- 6:15Speaker 2: version of Sodo, and Dovaal is able to be the
- 6:19Speaker 2: project that he's supposed to be rather than a guy
- 6:22Speaker 2: that you're forcing into a high leverage role.
- 6:24Speaker 1: Because you went and acquired probably the best relief.
- 6:27Speaker 3: Pitcher that was doubt about to say.
- 6:30Speaker 2: And we already talked about the package, but I mean
- 6:33Speaker 2: they they literally, I mean you could have gone gotten better, obviously,
- 6:37Speaker 2: like you could have got Mason Miller.
- 6:39Speaker 1: You could have.
- 6:40Speaker 2: As far as everyone who has moved, I don't see
- 6:43Speaker 2: a reliever that was moved that I like more than
- 6:45Speaker 2: Luke Weaver. And the fact that you're paying him the
- 6:48Speaker 2: league minimum for the remainder of this year, and you're
- 6:50Speaker 2: gonna pay him less money next year than what you're
- 6:54Speaker 2: paying Gregory Soto this year. That is a dream scenario.
- 6:58Speaker 2: That is a dream trade win for the Pittsburgh Pirates.
- 7:01Speaker 2: Even if Sammy Stefora pans out to be a really
- 7:04Speaker 2: good player, I have a hard time imagining he's going
- 7:08Speaker 2: to be better than Connor Griffin. So overall, that is
- 7:11Speaker 2: a massive win for the Pirates. And that's all I
- 7:13Speaker 2: have to say on Weaver.
- 7:14Speaker 3: Yeah, when we brought up Weaver on the show earlier
- 7:17Speaker 3: as a potential trade target for the Pirates, we all
- 7:20Speaker 3: glow loved it. Obviously really talented, but we said there's
- 7:23Speaker 3: twelve and a half million reasons why it might not
- 7:27Speaker 3: make sense for the Pirates. And that was twelve and
- 7:28Speaker 3: a half million dollars that he is owed next year
- 7:30Speaker 3: in twenty twenty seven. Now, the Mets gave what was
- 7:34Speaker 3: it like six million or something, so he's going to
- 7:36Speaker 3: be owed six and yeah year, So six and a
- 7:38Speaker 3: half million for Luke Weaver, which I mean, yeah, he's
- 7:42Speaker 3: he's on the like getting older, but still that that's
- 7:45Speaker 3: a steal for the level of production that he's been
- 7:48Speaker 3: putting up this year. So yeah, instantly address that concern. Yeah,
- 7:53Speaker 3: fantastic trade mets really really must like Sammy suffer. I mean,
- 7:57Speaker 3: he had a crazy month of July, like fourteen runs
- 8:00Speaker 3: or something, I want to say, just ridiculous. But also
- 8:04Speaker 3: that's in Greensboro where yeah a little bit easier today.
- 8:09Speaker 3: Hit home runs down there.
- 8:10Speaker 1: Sotstop in their low level, So.
- 8:16Speaker 3: That's no no, I yeah, completely agree. Yeah, but the
- 8:21Speaker 3: fact that they didn't give up anything more and got
- 8:25Speaker 3: cash back is just well done.
- 8:27Speaker 4: Ben, Yeah, that was gonna be the point that I
- 8:32Speaker 4: brung brung up because when we covered Luke Weaver, we
- 8:36Speaker 4: did say the price tag or whatever was going to
- 8:39Speaker 4: be something that they would have to get creative with.
- 8:42Speaker 4: And obviously they got creative with it was able to
- 8:44Speaker 4: make something happen, and they saw like we did and
- 8:49Speaker 4: a lot of other fans that you know, this is
- 8:50Speaker 4: a potential really good fit for Luke Weaver, and I
- 8:53Speaker 4: think a lot of people were excited for that. My
- 8:56Speaker 4: cousin had even texted me from Cleveland, you know, following
- 8:58Speaker 4: the Pirates. He said he was at work and he
- 9:00Speaker 4: was like, Weaver to the Pirates. Yeah, so people you
- 9:06Speaker 4: know that aren't even necessarily like every day Pirates fans,
- 9:09Speaker 4: you know, saw it as an exciting move.
- 9:11Speaker 5: So mm hm, kudos to that Land and Weaver.
- 9:17Speaker 1: All right, so we talked Weaver. We're going to take
- 9:19Speaker 1: a quick break.
- 9:19Speaker 2: When we come back, we're going to talk Kirby Yates,
- 9:21Speaker 2: the second of the three right handers added by the
- 9:24Speaker 2: Pirates on Monday, Monday afternoon before the trade deadline.
- 9:28Speaker 1: Here on Bucker.
- 9:28Speaker 6: Territory, this is that time of year, aj. It is
- 9:32Speaker 6: Baseball's time to shine, and it is Sea Geeks time
- 9:36Speaker 6: to shine with MLB tickets and finding the best pricing,
- 9:41Speaker 6: seating and games that are even sold out available on
- 9:45Speaker 6: Sea Geek.
- 9:46Speaker 7: Absolutely if you want to go to the biggest matchups
- 9:48Speaker 7: coming up. We have Yankees Cubs coming up. Where's Yankees
- 9:51Speaker 7: Red Sox? That means stuff. Again, there's some big moments
- 9:53Speaker 7: that are coming up here in the as the pena
- 9:56Speaker 7: chases really heat up. Go to can find those green tickets,
- 10:00Speaker 7: the best deals and get yourself out to an MLB game.
- 10:03Speaker 6: Yeah, And they're straightforward with you. They will actually put
- 10:06Speaker 6: a red dot next to a ticket that they don't
- 10:09Speaker 6: feel is your best look. Green dot means very good
- 10:13Speaker 6: code for you. It's Territory ten ten percent off your
- 10:17Speaker 6: next set of MLB tickets at seakeek. That's ten percent
- 10:21Speaker 6: off MLB tickets when you use the promo code Territory
- 10:24Speaker 6: one zero. Make sure you click the link in the
- 10:26Speaker 6: description to download the app and have the code automatically
- 10:29Speaker 6: added to your account so you can use it later.
- 10:33Speaker 2: Kirby Yates was reliever number two added. I thought that
- 10:37Speaker 2: was the big move at the at.
- 10:38Speaker 1: The buzzer, Yeah, it was wrong. It got even better.
- 10:41Speaker 2: But Curbyates is a guy who has played a lot
- 10:46Speaker 2: of Major League Baseball. I mean yeah, look at his
- 10:48Speaker 2: draft year two thousand and five. That's more than twenty
- 10:51Speaker 2: years ago. And he's thirty nine years old. Veteran right hander,
- 10:55Speaker 2: a guy who you know his savant it's very hot
- 10:59Speaker 2: or cold.
- 10:59Speaker 1: He gets a lot, a lot of chase.
- 11:02Speaker 2: The numbers should probably be better what they are in
- 11:05Speaker 2: certain areas, but he's also going to.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Allow a lot of fly balls.
- 11:11Speaker 2: And you know it's hard kunkie barrelum. Yeah, in hard
- 11:14Speaker 2: contact boom or Bust. I'm not super pressed on breaking
- 11:19Speaker 2: down Kirby Yates. I feel like if you've watched Major
- 11:21Speaker 2: League baseball over the last decade, you have an idea
- 11:24Speaker 2: of what this guy can do. But one thing I'm
- 11:27Speaker 2: very interested to get is Josh's opinion on the value
- 11:32Speaker 2: that comes with adding a player like Kirby Yates to
- 11:35Speaker 2: this type of team. He's thirty nine years old, He's
- 11:37Speaker 2: played a lot of baseball, He's had success in his career,
- 11:41Speaker 2: He's pitched in the postseason. Josh, when you add that
- 11:44Speaker 2: rental veteran, everyone talks about the big sexy, you know, superstars,
- 11:49Speaker 2: and in a way they did that with Weaver, right,
- 11:51Speaker 2: they got one of the best relief pitchers in Major
- 11:53Speaker 2: League Baseball. But there is a lot of unspoken value
- 11:57Speaker 2: that doesn't show up on a savant chart or you know,
- 12:00Speaker 2: on the back of a baseball card that comes from
- 12:03Speaker 2: adding a vet who has literally seen it all. And Josh,
- 12:06Speaker 2: can you just kind of give us some context as
- 12:09Speaker 2: to what that brings to a clubhouse, especially to an
- 12:11Speaker 2: area of the team that was really lacking that confidence
- 12:15Speaker 2: and perspective.
- 12:17Speaker 4: I mean, you mentioned a guy that's been around, and
- 12:20Speaker 4: you mentioned he's seen it all, coming to a bullpen who, unfortunately, you.
- 12:25Speaker 5: Know, has had his fair share of struggles.
- 12:28Speaker 4: And when you say a guy that's seen it all,
- 12:29Speaker 4: he's also seen his fair share of struggles. But you
- 12:33Speaker 4: know what you have is a fresh face, you know,
- 12:35Speaker 4: a fresh voice that you know these guys in the
- 12:38Speaker 4: bullpen can resonate with to say, Okay, this guy's been
- 12:40Speaker 4: where we've been before, you know, so so he can
- 12:45Speaker 4: not necessarily show them the way, but you know, show
- 12:48Speaker 4: them in moments like, yeah.
- 12:49Speaker 5: Man, I've been there before.
- 12:51Speaker 4: You know, I know what it's like, you know, in
- 12:53Speaker 4: a postseason hunt, I know what it's like when you're
- 12:55Speaker 4: in these crunch time games and you know you're the
- 12:57Speaker 4: guy called upon in a bullpen struggling. You know, they
- 13:01Speaker 4: really didn't have much of that, and you know he's
- 13:04Speaker 4: gonna be a fresh face, a fresh voice that you know,
- 13:07Speaker 4: when when you can pick the brain of somebody that's
- 13:11Speaker 4: done what you're trying to do for quite a bit,
- 13:14Speaker 4: there's nothing like experience. And when you can find a
- 13:17Speaker 4: guy who's had some experience, had success, who's been through
- 13:19Speaker 4: it all, who's had some failures, what better person to
- 13:22Speaker 4: learn from than somebody that, as you have said, has
- 13:25Speaker 4: seen it all, and like you said, you know what
- 13:28Speaker 4: you're gonna.
- 13:29Speaker 5: Get with him from what I remember facing Kirby, you know.
- 13:32Speaker 4: He's got a split throws, you know, fastball, a little
- 13:35Speaker 4: bit of sinker. But with that sometimes you're gonna run
- 13:39Speaker 4: into issues where I'm sure when he's getting hit it's
- 13:41Speaker 4: probably familily being to split up because I think that's
- 13:43Speaker 4: when he got in trouble when we would face him.
- 13:45Speaker 4: But as I said, a guy who has you know,
- 13:48Speaker 4: lived and died with you know, being convicted, you know,
- 13:51Speaker 4: with his pitches, that's the reason he's been around for
- 13:53Speaker 4: that long. And you know, guys that are convicted usually
- 13:57Speaker 4: walk around with a lot of confidence. And those are
- 13:59Speaker 4: guys that you really can't get to and in a
- 14:02Speaker 4: in a bullpen that's been you know, kind of beat
- 14:04Speaker 4: up and bruised a little bit. It'll be nice to
- 14:06Speaker 4: have somebody that's like, hey, whatever's been done in the past,
- 14:09Speaker 4: trust me, there's more ahead that you know, you can
- 14:12Speaker 4: you can write the ship and you know pretty much
- 14:14Speaker 4: say what happened in the past is in the past.
- 14:16Speaker 5: That's that's tough thing for relievers to do.
- 14:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, I was just gonna say, I was
- 14:22Speaker 2: going to tee you up here as a guy who
- 14:25Speaker 2: you know has played a little less Major League Baseball
- 14:27Speaker 2: than Josh. I know you can't really follow with that
- 14:29Speaker 2: type of perspective, but just overall your thoughts on just
- 14:33Speaker 2: what he could provide to this team as far as
- 14:36Speaker 2: you know what you see on the statue, Josh gave
- 14:40Speaker 2: the off the field stuff, the plubhouse stuff, But like,
- 14:42Speaker 2: what do you think he adds as far as what
- 14:44Speaker 2: the numbers show?
- 14:45Speaker 3: Yeah, pull back up his stackcast page here. The chaf
- 14:49Speaker 3: and chase and with percentage are what jump out of me.
- 14:53Speaker 3: I mean he is looking for strikeouts and if that's
- 14:57Speaker 3: that's how he's going to pitch.
- 14:58Speaker 1: Uh.
- 14:59Speaker 3: Really nice to have a guy in your bullpen who's
- 15:01Speaker 3: gonna have that kind of k rate that you can
- 15:04Speaker 3: go to. Like if you have runners on and you
- 15:07Speaker 3: need a guy who's gonna get strikeouts, you can turn
- 15:10Speaker 3: to Kirby and go, hey, you're you have eleven plus
- 15:13Speaker 3: years of service time, you've done this before. You can
- 15:17Speaker 3: trust him and rely on him. So I really like
- 15:20Speaker 3: the move. I think you guys hit the nail on
- 15:23Speaker 3: the head talking about just bringing the veteran leadership aspect,
- 15:27Speaker 3: because if you look at this Bullpen, I mean they're
- 15:30Speaker 3: just really wasn't a lot of that at all, and
- 15:34Speaker 3: the guys who have been there, you know, have been struggling,
- 15:37Speaker 3: Like Dennis Santana, he's gone now. He was probably one
- 15:39Speaker 3: of your leaders, Johan Santana or Johan Johann Ramirez as
- 15:46Speaker 3: like he's always happy, like go lucky, but like I
- 15:49Speaker 3: don't know if you're looking at him as like you're
- 15:51Speaker 3: the leader of your like or Bullpen. So yeah, it's
- 15:57Speaker 3: bringing that kind of voice, like Joshua saying, I think
- 16:00Speaker 3: even as a fan, you can just recognize, like in
- 16:02Speaker 3: your own life, you've seen people that have that kind
- 16:05Speaker 3: of experience that have been through the Ringer and can
- 16:08Speaker 3: help you. Now I have to learn those mistakes on
- 16:11Speaker 3: your own, if you will. So yeah, really looking forward
- 16:14Speaker 3: to seeing what Kirby can bring you. Found thoughts on.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Him, No, Yeah, I just kind of look at it
- 16:20Speaker 2: like you look at his stats, Like two years ago,
- 16:23Speaker 2: I think he had thirty three saves.
- 16:25Speaker 1: Yeah really really yeah, and that's not the player the
- 16:29Speaker 1: Pirates are acquiring anymore.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Yeah, but we at.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Yeah, they just need average relief pitching, and that's what
- 16:36Speaker 2: this guy is. He's an average reliever, he's a seventh
- 16:39Speaker 2: inning guy. He's a second right handed option, you know,
- 16:43Speaker 2: because if they want to use Weaver as your traditional
- 16:46Speaker 2: ninth inning guy, which I wouldn't be opposed to doing.
- 16:49Speaker 1: I don't know if I'd be like I'm lobbying for
- 16:51Speaker 1: that to be the thing that they use or the
- 16:53Speaker 1: way they use him.
- 16:55Speaker 2: But if he is, you now have like I said,
- 16:58Speaker 2: I think he's just a right handed greg and Sodo
- 17:02Speaker 2: probably in an eighth inning role or eighth inning if
- 17:05Speaker 2: there's a lot of lefties coming up, makes sense. In
- 17:08Speaker 2: the same thing for Yates, and especially now that you
- 17:11Speaker 2: have other options, you can use Montgomery or Balker, who
- 17:14Speaker 2: we're going to talk about next They have just so
- 17:17Speaker 2: many more options, and he's just one of many options.
- 17:21Speaker 1: If it was just him, don't love it.
- 17:24Speaker 2: But the fact that he's one of a whole bunch
- 17:26Speaker 2: of options that makes this team.
- 17:29Speaker 1: A lot better.
- 17:29Speaker 3: He's an improved up, yeah.
- 17:31Speaker 1: For sure.
- 17:32Speaker 2: So we're gonna take another break then we would come
- 17:34Speaker 2: back Lake Balker. I've been waiting for this for months literally,
- 17:39Speaker 2: and we're going to talk about it next year.
- 17:40Speaker 1: On bucko territory.
- 17:42Speaker 6: It's the summertime, aj and this is a time to
- 17:45Speaker 6: feel free wild make some phone calls that you're overdue for,

- 18:46Speaker 1: Mark. I'm not even gonna play the clip. Just play
- 18:50Speaker 1: the clip.
- 18:51Speaker 5: Amazing.
- 18:51Speaker 2: So Lake Boker, if it happens, you heard it here
- 18:54Speaker 2: from Yeah, I will take the most nauseating.
- 19:02Speaker 3: You'll be watching this. I know his Twitter right now, Yeah,
- 19:05Speaker 3: I'll be.
- 19:05Speaker 2: I'll be calling everyone I know in that front office
- 19:08Speaker 2: being like I.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Deserve you guys, got this from me, just so you do.
- 19:12Speaker 1: And I want to be abundantly clear.
- 19:14Speaker 2: I have not talked to anyone in any baseball organization
- 19:18Speaker 2: ever about Lake Boker. I have never had one conversation.
- 19:23Speaker 2: I just watched him against the Pirates last year on
- 19:25Speaker 2: Opening Day and I said that name rules, and I
- 19:27Speaker 2: look into him and I can't get him out of
- 19:29Speaker 2: my mind. He's just my favorite player that no one
- 19:32Speaker 2: else talks about in baseball. Go get Lake Balker. Forget
- 19:35Speaker 2: Jose Soriano, forget Sensor, Willie Castro or Jeffers.
- 19:39Speaker 1: This is the Lake Balker episode.
- 19:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I love it, Yeah, yes, perfect and yeah, Buddy Keby, Oh.
- 19:53Speaker 1: My god, I listen to the Lake episode.
- 19:57Speaker 2: I just cannot believe it, like that was one where again,
- 20:03Speaker 2: like I do talk like in our group chat, I
- 20:06Speaker 2: share some information with Josh and Mark that some things
- 20:10Speaker 2: I don't even report just because I get told stuff
- 20:13Speaker 2: on background or off the record, that it's just kind
- 20:16Speaker 2: of like, you know, like just just to know maybe
- 20:18Speaker 2: to keep me informed that if it does happened, I
- 20:21Speaker 2: have some like background texts. And that's that's not me
- 20:25Speaker 2: like saying that I'm doing anything different. That's how it
- 20:28Speaker 2: works for a lot of people who report and cover
- 20:30Speaker 2: a team for multiple years. I had nothing like, not
- 20:36Speaker 2: once had I ever been tipped off that the pirates
- 20:39Speaker 2: are interested in this guy.
- 20:41Speaker 1: And I said that in that clip. I said that
- 20:43Speaker 1: on that episode I will be accountable here.
- 20:46Speaker 2: I think I did say that I'd be willing to
- 20:48Speaker 2: move as Rwin Valdez.
- 20:49Speaker 3: That was me, Uh yeah, that was that was me.
- 20:53Speaker 1: But here's here's the thing. Here's the thing.
- 20:56Speaker 8: Valdez Valdez, he I mean, yeah, I don't even think
- 21:00Speaker 8: he was in the major leagues, no way, for he
- 21:07Speaker 8: was not that version of Valdez.
- 21:09Speaker 1: So I'll give I'll give us a pass there. And overall,
- 21:13Speaker 1: it's just it's just funny. It's just funny.
- 21:16Speaker 2: I'm not what's in my muscle saying I do think
- 21:19Speaker 2: I know a decent amount about major League Baseball. This
- 21:22Speaker 2: is just a shot in the dark for like, it
- 21:26Speaker 2: just it's it's it's no different than anyone who watches
- 21:29Speaker 2: this show who comments their trade deadline targets. But I mean,
- 21:34Speaker 2: this was a sick o pool. This was a sick
- 21:36Speaker 2: pool again, and man, it's just great. It feels like
- 21:39Speaker 2: when you pick the sixteen seed to win in March. Matt, Yes,
- 21:42Speaker 2: that's what that feels like for me. But in reality,
- 21:45Speaker 2: all jokes aside, all you know, all Noah Hyle's victory.
- 21:49Speaker 1: Lap put to the side here.
- 21:51Speaker 2: This was a really good addition for the Pirates for
- 21:53Speaker 2: considering a what they gave up. They didn't give up
- 21:57Speaker 2: anything for this guy. He's got so much club control.
- 22:00Speaker 2: And ben Cherrington even said in his you know post
- 22:04Speaker 2: deadline zoom, which of course I had to be the
- 22:06Speaker 2: one to ask about Lake Balker, like there was just
- 22:08Speaker 2: no way anyone else was going to get that question
- 22:10Speaker 2: in before me. But he kind of noted, He's like,
- 22:13Speaker 2: this is a guy who's going to be used probably
- 22:16Speaker 2: in a similar way to how Karmen Majinsky was used,
- 22:19Speaker 2: I would say in twenty twenty four, is probably the
- 22:21Speaker 2: best comp.
- 22:22Speaker 1: You can see him give multiple innings.
- 22:25Speaker 2: He's gone as many as three ups regularly with the
- 22:27Speaker 2: Miami Marlins.
- 22:28Speaker 1: He can also pitch in high leverage.
- 22:30Speaker 2: And this is a young youngish I mean, he's not
- 22:33Speaker 2: super young, but he's not old. And he has so
- 22:35Speaker 2: much control where you can develop this guy and use
- 22:38Speaker 2: him however you want. Maybe you move him into the
- 22:40Speaker 2: rotation later, maybe you move him toward the back end
- 22:43Speaker 2: of the bullpen. That's probably where he's trending. But there's
- 22:46Speaker 2: so much raw potential here. And again, he's not amazing,
- 22:49Speaker 2: but he Lake Baker would have been the best right
- 22:53Speaker 2: handed reliever in this volume if he was added just
- 22:57Speaker 2: a day before they acquired Luke Weaver.
- 22:59Speaker 1: He's good.
- 23:00Speaker 2: He's not amazing, but he is a good pitcher and
- 23:03Speaker 2: he's gonna be here for the rest of the decade,
- 23:05Speaker 2: or he has the opportunity to be right for the
- 23:07Speaker 2: rest of the decade. This was a really nice last
- 23:09Speaker 2: second pick up for the Pirates.
- 23:12Speaker 3: Great great buzz.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, you said, Sidney some good arms, and they
- 23:17Speaker 4: addressed that. And as you mentioned, he's got some club
- 23:20Speaker 4: control and it's pitched well.
- 23:22Speaker 5: And and your.
- 23:23Speaker 4: Eyes as you said, they didn't give up much, So
- 23:25Speaker 4: what's there not to like really helped this bullpen helped
- 23:28Speaker 4: this team, you know, with you know, some some of
- 23:32Speaker 4: some options in the bullpen to really you know say that, hey, guys,
- 23:36Speaker 4: we're not just making trades to make trades. I think
- 23:39Speaker 4: these were some additions that compliment each other really well.
- 23:42Speaker 4: And bullpen was a big need and it wasn't just
- 23:46Speaker 4: one or two arms as you mentioned four over the
- 23:48Speaker 4: course of you know, the past week or so.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yeah, and getting him for only Brandon Badoit basically and
- 23:56Speaker 3: the other two guys, I think we're like in like
- 23:58Speaker 3: like the Florida like yeah, yeah, like yeah, and so
- 24:02Speaker 3: easy easy, uh trade because he's giving you way more
- 24:05Speaker 3: than Brandon Bajua is gonna give and he basically has
- 24:08Speaker 3: the same level of team control.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Uh.
- 24:10Speaker 3: So Yeah, I absolutely love this move, not just because
- 24:14Speaker 3: Lake Baker is an awesome name that looks really cool
- 24:18Speaker 3: and it's a sicko pole for my podcast co host here,
- 24:21Speaker 3: which by the way, just like it's one thing that
- 24:23Speaker 3: nail like a trade prediction, Like I'd like this is
- 24:26Speaker 3: a trade target the party get Hey, they actually went
- 24:28Speaker 3: out and got him. That's cool. It's another thing when
- 24:30Speaker 3: that guy is Lake freaking Baker, a guy who I
- 24:34Speaker 3: had never heard of. I think we mentioned on the episode,
- 24:36Speaker 3: like five hundred people listening to this, probably one might
- 24:40Speaker 3: know him, and they're lying like, yeah, no, it's just
- 24:43Speaker 3: insane insane pool. So yeah, major major props, noah. But yeah,
- 24:47Speaker 3: it also helps this bull fan out of a time.
- 24:49Speaker 3: So I love the move.
- 24:51Speaker 5: Yeah, yep.
- 24:52Speaker 4: And I like how you said he's he's already been
- 24:54Speaker 4: familiar with, you know, multiple ups and experienced at a
- 25:00Speaker 4: bit of everything in that bullpen, you know, as far
- 25:02Speaker 4: as trending tourist to back end son as a guy
- 25:06Speaker 4: that you know is.
- 25:07Speaker 5: Going to compliment those other arms. But uh, as I
- 25:10Speaker 5: said on there, the name's got a ring to it.
- 25:12Speaker 3: Oh yeah, welcome to.
- 25:15Speaker 2: I can't wait to tell him I'm a Mount Union
- 25:17Speaker 2: purple Rader and tell.
- 25:19Speaker 3: Him that was the D three school rival.
- 25:23Speaker 2: Yeah, the D three rivalry is real here. And while
- 25:27Speaker 2: we're talking about pirates editions, we need to make some
- 25:30Speaker 2: additions as well to our subscriber count, So we need
- 25:33Speaker 2: you to step up and help us out. We're on
- 25:35Speaker 2: a mission of three thousand subs, can't get there without
- 25:38Speaker 2: your help.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Please hit that subscriber button if you haven't already.
- 25:40Speaker 2: Also encourage everyone to check out our Bucco Territory team store.
- 25:45Speaker 1: We've got a lot of good stuff. And gosh, dang it,
- 25:48Speaker 1: if Lake Baker isn't replacing Andrew.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Mccutton on that, I think I told him he could
- 25:53Speaker 2: do that. I think I said that on the well
- 25:55Speaker 2: the episode where we talked about him. So now we
- 25:58Speaker 2: we have to make that happen.
- 26:01Speaker 1: Guys. Any final thoughts before we wrap it up?
- 26:04Speaker 3: Uh? Just great, great deadline. Yeah, this day was a whirlwind,
- 26:09Speaker 3: especially just like the last few hours right before wait move.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Just love seeing this bullpen get a nice shot in
- 26:18Speaker 3: the arm. Really needed it. Things feel good after a terrible,
- 26:22Speaker 3: terrible series in Cincinnati. I feel like it. It feels
- 26:25Speaker 3: all right to be a Pirates fan. You're looking better
- 26:28Speaker 3: after this deadline now, Josh, anything else now?
- 26:32Speaker 4: Yeah, nothing really other than a dressed the bullpen in
- 26:35Speaker 4: a major way. And as you said, it's time to
- 26:40Speaker 4: go all this is behind everybody now.
- 26:42Speaker 5: You know the.
- 26:43Speaker 4: Anxiety of okay, who's going to be traded? Now, it's
- 26:46Speaker 4: time to just strap it up and say this is
- 26:48Speaker 4: our guys, this is what we got let's go do
- 26:50Speaker 4: what we need to do.
- 26:51Speaker 1: Hell yeah, yeah.
- 26:53Speaker 2: My final thought would just be this today, a lot
- 26:57Speaker 2: of teams in the wild There were a handful of
- 26:59Speaker 2: teams in the wild card rate, including a couple of
- 27:01Speaker 2: clubs who were ahead of the Pirates in the standings
- 27:03Speaker 2: that waved the white flag. Yep, they gave up, and
- 27:07Speaker 2: I mean they're gonna keep fighting, but they sold it
- 27:09Speaker 2: the deadline. One team sold an All star, another team,
- 27:12Speaker 2: I mean another team sold a good relief pitcher to
- 27:17Speaker 2: a team chasing it in the standings.
- 27:20Speaker 1: And while that was happening, the Pirates did not sell
- 27:22Speaker 1: away anything.
- 27:23Speaker 2: They didn't give away any part of their future, and
- 27:25Speaker 2: they didn't give away any part of their present. And
- 27:27Speaker 2: I think that that deserves to be commended if you
- 27:29Speaker 2: want to, you know, have a great with ownership that
- 27:32Speaker 2: maybe they couldn't add payroll, because I mean, they really
- 27:34Speaker 2: didn't add a lot of money to this year's salary.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Buckers pre arb Yates is on an expiring deal and
- 27:42Speaker 2: they're paying Leaver like nothing an the Yankees even eight
- 27:46Speaker 2: salary for Devolph.
- 27:47Speaker 1: That's a legitimate right.
- 27:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:49Speaker 2: The front office, I feel like did the best it
- 27:51Speaker 2: absolutely could do this deadline, and so fans should be
- 27:56Speaker 2: pumped about that, and just objectively speaking, like I think
- 28:00Speaker 2: the fans should be pumped about that. And I also
- 28:03Speaker 2: think now it's on the players that were here prior
- 28:07Speaker 2: to this week.
- 28:09Speaker 1: You got the help you needed. The lineup has found
- 28:11Speaker 1: a way to produce with injuries.
- 28:15Speaker 2: You gotta figure out a way to hit these lefties
- 28:16Speaker 2: now in the starting rotation.
- 28:18Speaker 1: It's on your shoulders.
- 28:19Speaker 2: You only have to get the game to the sixth
- 28:21Speaker 2: inning because your bullpen is better. Your bullpen has enough
- 28:24Speaker 2: options where four out of five times it should be
- 28:26Speaker 2: able to finish the job. If you get at the
- 28:28Speaker 2: ball to the seventh, get it through the sixth and
- 28:30Speaker 2: you're gonna be okay now and we'll see what happens.
- 28:34Speaker 2: It should be a very fun August in September. So
- 28:37Speaker 2: he's Platinum Key, He's Josh Harrison. I'm Noah Hayle, signing
- 28:41Speaker 2: off saying thanks for tuning in to another episode of
- 28:43Speaker 2: Buckwet Territory, presented to you by the Foul Territory Network.
- 28:46Speaker 1: Take care
