- 0:00Speaker 1: Brought to you by butter. Ben is here. Ben Lee,
- 0:04Speaker 1: the Donut Critic. And this is, he's brought us a
- 0:08Speaker 1: whole array of stuff. A plate of sweet things and
- 0:14Speaker 1: then a breakfast sandwich. And this is from where?
- 0:17Speaker 2: This is from Butta's.
- 0:19Speaker 3: But before we get into this, I want people to
- 0:21Speaker 3: go to my Instagram, Donut Critic.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Okay, I'm going.
- 0:23Speaker 3: Look at my last post and just look at the
- 0:27Speaker 3: amount of butter that they put.
- 0:29Speaker 2: In each of these roles.
- 0:30Speaker 1: Wow. Okay.
- 0:31Speaker 2: So, I mean, the name butter is correct is, is accurate.
- 0:36Speaker 1: All right. So which, where do we want to start
- 0:38Speaker 1: with the plate or with the sandwich or what?
- 0:40Speaker 3: So, um, they started just doing the roles. And so
- 0:44Speaker 3: you see the butter rolls and that was what they
- 0:46Speaker 3: had started with originally thinking, okay, like this is the
- 0:49Speaker 3: nostalgia that they remember from their past. They used to
- 0:53Speaker 3: get pastries from a local bakery down the street, down
- 0:56Speaker 3: in Hawaii. And then just later in life, it kind
- 1:00Speaker 3: of clicked and they're like, we got to bring that back.
- 1:02Speaker 3: You know, the nostalgia needs to come back. So that's
- 1:05Speaker 3: what they really started with. And now they've expanded into
- 1:08Speaker 3: all these different things. Like we have cakes and we
- 1:10Speaker 3: have breakfast sandwiches, which are savory and cookies. So it's
- 1:16Speaker 3: really a full scale bakery, especially once you go in,
- 1:19Speaker 3: there's tons of options. I just saw a hoppy pie
- 1:23Speaker 3: that they just barely released.
- 1:24Speaker 1: What's that?
- 1:25Speaker 3: It's like a coconut and chocolate layered. I didn't get
- 1:29Speaker 3: to try it this morning, but I was hoping to.
- 1:32Speaker 3: So I'll probably go back either later today or tomorrow.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Oh, they've got a loco moco. They do have loco moco.
- 1:37Speaker 1: I don't know what that is.
- 1:38Speaker 4: What is that?
- 1:39Speaker 1: It's a plate. It's rice, hamburger, brown gravy. Sunny side
- 1:43Speaker 1: up egg. You wouldn't eat it.
- 1:47Speaker 3: It's one of those classic plates that you go to
- 1:49Speaker 3: Hawaii and you just make it.
- 1:50Speaker 1: I love it. It's like putting red beans on your–
- 1:56Speaker 1: snow cone or on your ice cream. It's really good.
- 2:00Speaker 1: So now this is a delicious roll, but it's got
- 2:04Speaker 1: a filling in it.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Yeah, so some of them have different fillings. And so
- 2:07Speaker 3: there are original rolls. They do specials with fruit. I
- 2:11Speaker 3: think that that one's an apple cinnamon, if I'm not mistaken.
- 2:15Speaker 3: But they have sticky rolls, which have a little bit
- 2:17Speaker 3: of cinnamon and sugar.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Yeah, this is kind of like a sticky roll or
- 2:20Speaker 1: a cinnamon roll.
- 2:21Speaker 2: They have taro rolls.
- 2:23Speaker 3: And they have a coconut roll right now, too, which
- 2:25Speaker 3: is topped with sweet and crunchy coconut on top.
- 2:28Speaker 1: Those are good. You weren't kidding about that guava cake.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's good, huh?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Delicious. That's the purple one, right?
- 2:33Speaker 4: No, that's the pink one.
- 2:34Speaker 2: The pink one. The ube is the purple one.
- 2:37Speaker 3: So the thing about these cakes that I love, that
- 2:40Speaker 3: this is just knocking it out of the park, they
- 2:43Speaker 3: are creating like a tres leches.
- 2:46Speaker 2: So it's almost like a fusion. Usually you just get
- 2:49Speaker 2: a slice of cake. But what they've done is bring
- 2:52Speaker 2: in that milky, creamy texture.
- 2:54Speaker 1: All the way through. Yeah, all the way through. They
- 2:56Speaker 1: just let it sort of soak into the cake.
- 2:58Speaker 3: So if you've been looking for a very, very delicious
- 3:02Speaker 3: ube or guava cake, make sure to get there. They
- 3:05Speaker 3: also have one that's like cookies and cream, and I
- 3:06Speaker 3: think that there is a coconut one as well.
- 3:10Speaker 2: But yeah, super delicious.
- 3:12Speaker 1: So what is this purple one?
- 3:14Speaker 2: That's ube.
- 3:15Speaker 1: What is that?
- 3:16Speaker 2: So ube is a.
- 3:19Speaker 3: It's a root vegetable, and it's from the Philippines. And
- 3:22Speaker 3: so what they do is, like, think of it as
- 3:26Speaker 3: like a yam. It's like the purple yam.
- 3:28Speaker 1: They make flour out of it?
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah. Well, it's that powder, and that's what gives it
- 3:33Speaker 2: the color and the flavor.
- 3:34Speaker 1: I like that one better than the guava.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Well, that's fair, Bill. I wouldn't agree with you on that, but, like,
- 3:42Speaker 3: that's fair.
- 3:43Speaker 4: You can all have your own preference.
- 3:44Speaker 1: It's okay. I know I can.
- 3:47Speaker 3: But no, this is a new shop in Salt Lake City.
- 3:50Speaker 3: They do have a shop in Pleasant Grove.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So they're a known business.
- 3:54Speaker 3: Yep, and so super popular down there. That's kind of
- 3:57Speaker 3: where their heart is. That's where they moved from Hawaii
- 4:00Speaker 3: to Utah County, and so that's where they built first.
- 4:03Speaker 2: And now this one is on 1400 South State Street
- 4:07Speaker 2: right by Slick. And they do cookies too. Yeah, they
- 4:11Speaker 2: do cookies.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So you're looking at an ube and I think white
- 4:15Speaker 3: chocolate chip. macadamia they have chocolate chip so yeah they
- 4:19Speaker 3: they have a variety of different things but it's it's
- 4:23Speaker 3: just one of those comfort places like i said if
- 4:25Speaker 3: you look at my instagram and you see them roll
- 4:27Speaker 3: that big of a cube of butter that just shows
- 4:31Speaker 3: you what what type.
- 4:32Speaker 4: Of love is what that is but you have your
- 4:35Speaker 4: butter sweatshirt on i.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Do i i made sure to wear that again because
- 4:39Speaker 3: i'm representing butter yes.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Well, this is all very good. Now, let's talk about
- 4:44Speaker 1: the breakfast sandwiches a little.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Yeah, so they have different kinds of sandwiches.
- 4:48Speaker 3: You are eating Spam and Egg. And I love Spam,
- 4:53Speaker 3: especially when it's paired with egg on a delicious bun.
- 4:59Speaker 3: But they also have bacon and sausage, so you can
- 5:01Speaker 3: go in and just get a hot, fresh sandwich.
- 5:04Speaker 1: And where are they located again?
- 5:05Speaker 2: So it's 1425 South State, so by Slick.
- 5:10Speaker 3: So if you're thinking down by that McDonald's, I'm just
- 5:13Speaker 3: hoping that that place just keeps reviving and bringing in
- 5:17Speaker 3: restaurants in places like that.
- 5:19Speaker 2: That's what you get the turnover.
- 5:20Speaker 3: You get people coming in. You get attention to it.
- 5:24Speaker 3: More people buy in and renovate those areas. And so
- 5:27Speaker 3: that's kind of my call, too, is I want you
- 5:29Speaker 3: guys to go down and support so we can start
- 5:32Speaker 3: renovating that strip area because there are a lot of
- 5:35Speaker 3: cool-looking shops and areas right in there that could be
- 5:38Speaker 3: fun restaurants.
- 5:38Speaker 1: Oh, man. Uh, this is all just delicious.
- 5:41Speaker 3: Um, so, um, one other thing I want to say,
- 5:45Speaker 3: because last time I told you not to eat pumpkin.
- 5:48Speaker 1: Yes. Is it time?
- 5:49Speaker 2: It's time. September 1st.
- 5:52Speaker 4: We have permission from the donut critic.
- 5:54Speaker 3: It's September 1st. Um, and there are some good, uh,
- 5:57Speaker 3: pumpkin spice things around. I mean, they're everywhere now.
- 6:01Speaker 4: I mean, I'm sure we're going to talk about that
- 6:03Speaker 4: next time you come in, but.
- 6:05Speaker 1: Yep.
- 6:05Speaker 3: So I'll bring in something pumpkin spice, uh, for you
- 6:08Speaker 3: guys next time.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Well, it, It has to be impressive because I sort
- 6:12Speaker 1: of poo-poo the whole pumpkin spice thing. You know, making
- 6:16Speaker 1: pumpkin spice everything, and it's just like, enough already.
- 6:19Speaker 4: But so I trust Ben to bring us the best
- 6:21Speaker 4: of the best. So if you're going to have it,
- 6:23Speaker 4: don't have just anything.
- 6:25Speaker 1: Well, I can't poo-poo it because I've never had pumpkin
- 6:28Speaker 1: spice latte.
- 6:30Speaker 2: You've never had a pumpkin spice latte?
- 6:31Speaker 1: I've never had a pumpkin spice latte, ever. I don't
- 6:33Speaker 1: think I have either because I don't want to.
- 6:36Speaker 2: Okay, maybe I need to make this happen. No, so
- 6:39Speaker 2: I can't poo-poo it because I've never had it.
- 6:41Speaker 4: I think, Ben, you need to give us the, you're approved.
- 6:44Speaker 4: If you're going to do pumpkin spice, here's the best way.
- 6:47Speaker 1: To do it.
- 6:48Speaker 2: Okay, and I'm going to do it local, too.
- 6:49Speaker 3: So, you know, there's always the national chains, and you
- 6:52Speaker 3: go into grocery stores, and there's pumpkin spice, like popcorns
- 6:54Speaker 3: and whatever.
- 6:55Speaker 1: I'm going to get a pumpkin spice bar of soap
- 6:58Speaker 1: and bring it in. Sure. You'd smell great.
- 7:00Speaker 2: Hey, you would.
- 7:01Speaker 1: I'll bet C-Mint Dave could make that for you. Now,
- 7:04Speaker 1: what's the name of this place again?
- 7:05Speaker 2: So this is Budda's Hawaiian. Like B-U-D-D-A-S.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yes.
- 7:11Speaker 3: And, again, there's one in Pleasant Grove, and then there's
- 7:13Speaker 3: one on State Street in 1400 South.
- 7:15Speaker 1: All right. It's all really good and filling.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 7:20Speaker 1: I mean, very. Oh, they do a breakfast bento box.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Uh-huh, bento box.
- 7:25Speaker 1: Oh, musubi.
- 7:26Speaker 3: They do musubi. I know that's going to be a
- 7:28Speaker 3: favorite for a lot of people.
- 7:30Speaker 1: Yeah. Let's see. French toast. Loco Moco, which is good
- 7:33Speaker 1: French toast. Sandwiches. Just all kinds of sandwiches, apparently.
- 7:38Speaker 2: Really, it's just one of those places.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Stop in with your family, grab a bunch of treats
- 7:42Speaker 3: and a bunch of savory, and you'll be on your way.
- 7:44Speaker 1: It's terrific. Well, thank you. You've turned us on to
- 7:48Speaker 1: something that I probably shouldn't eat very often. Butter on
- 7:54Speaker 1: the roll. Butter's Hawaiian.
- 7:57Speaker 3: So this Saturday, just speaking of pumpkin spice... I did
- 8:00Speaker 3: try Sidecar's cinnamon roll. So if you guys want to
- 8:04Speaker 3: go down to Sidecar on Saturday, it's just this weekend.
- 8:07Speaker 4: Oh, okay.
- 8:08Speaker 3: So that's just an announcement that if you want to
- 8:10Speaker 3: try this and get your pumpkin spice off right, I
- 8:13Speaker 3: know it's Labor Day.
- 8:15Speaker 2: So kick it off. Go grab some pumpkin spice cinnamon rolls.
- 8:18Speaker 1: 21st South, 7th East, Sidecar. Yes. And they're only going
- 8:22Speaker 1: to have a cinnamon roll on weekends. Oh, just every
- 8:26Speaker 1: weekend they do it? Yeah. All right. There you go.
- 8:28Speaker 1: All right. Thank you, Ben. Where do we find you?
- 8:31Speaker 3: Donut Critic on Instagram. And, yeah, tune in for Pumpkin
- 8:34Speaker 3: Spice next time.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Thank you, Ben.
- 8:36Speaker 2: Wow.
- 8:37Speaker 4: That's good.
