- 0:00Let's talk about HR technology for a moment.
- 0:03I'm a fan of any HR technology that allows you to learn, that
- 0:08allows you to analyze your own efforts, analyze the team
- 0:13efforts, analyze an organization that are macro efforts, analyze
- 0:19if you're inkling if your gut feelings, if your behaviors are
- 0:23aligned for optimal productivity and success.
- 0:27I'm a big fan. I'm a big fan of any HR
- 0:30technology that provides recommendations based off of
- 0:33data. I'm a big fan of any HR
- 0:36technology and tools that allows you to analyze trends and
- 0:41processes that inevitably will work and and connect that data
- 0:45to certain individuals. At a contextual level, I'm a big
- 0:49fan and I think a lot of HR people are overwhelmed with the
- 0:55onslaught and the overwhelming amount of HR technology that's
- 0:59out there. And not enough of those leaders
- 1:03are being thoughtful about the areas that I just explained.
- 1:08The recommendations, the sentiment, the behavior, the
- 1:11learning, the growth, right? HR technology, yes is was built
- 1:17and is built for scale, for saving time, for supporting our
- 1:23lazy DNA that we are as human beings.
- 1:25Let's just call what it is, Let's just be frank about it.
- 1:29Human beings are innately lazy unless it's connected to things
- 1:34that we genuinely care about, things that can push us forward
- 1:38with our own, you know, professional and or personal
- 1:41endeavors, things that are connected to our family members,
- 1:44things that are and really extreme scenarios.
- 1:47We are finding ourselves to be motivating and inspirational and
- 1:53try to find ways to fix significant health issues.
- 1:57But generally, right from a professional perspective, we as
- 2:03HR people are always locked in as it pertains to things that
- 2:07will allow us to scale, get things done faster and find
- 2:11efficiencies. That's what we do, but not
- 2:16enough, in my personal opinion. Not enough organization, not
- 2:18enough HR people, not enough leaders, period, are trying to
- 2:22learn and grow and use data to do that.
- 2:26A lot of HR people are using data to make more thoughtful
- 2:29decisions, again so they don't waste time, money, resources,
- 2:34etcetera. But how about growth?
- 2:37Let's take recruiting for an example.
- 2:40How often do we find our HR leaders, our recruiting leaders,
- 2:43our head of talent acquisition, whatever the case is going to
- 2:45be, right? How often are you analyzing a
- 2:49simple thing like speaking time? How often are you thinking about
- 2:54it? How often are you thinking about
- 2:57if you're rambling? How often are you thinking about
- 3:00in a 35 minute first round, second round interview?
- 3:04What's the splits of leaning into that individual's personal
- 3:08context? Leaning into figuring out if
- 3:10that person's that, if that individual's personal background
- 3:14and and skill set can be connected to other roads that
- 3:17maybe they didn't even apply for speaking time?
- 3:21How often do we analyze that? How often are we?
- 3:25Are we? Are we unpacking that?
- 3:28How often are we taking that speaking time, taking the notes
- 3:31of that interview, understanding the sentiment within the
- 3:34interview, and then working with our learning and development
- 3:36leaders to cultivate and create a quarterly training for our
- 3:41recruiters that are based around sentiment, that are based around
- 3:44creating psychological safety within first and second round
- 3:46and third round and final interviews based around watching
- 3:51your talking time, right. Because that's called what it
- 3:54is. Yes, there are gaps that we must
- 3:58fill as recruiters as it pertains to certain conceptual
- 4:02nuances and realities of the organization.
- 4:04Yes, that is true. But we also, let me repeat, but
- 4:12we also need to lean in more, in my personal opinion, to who they
- 4:18are as an applicant, what they possess, what they potentially
- 4:22can bring in ways that are diverse, ways that are obscure,
- 4:27with ways that are different, ways that are that didn't
- 4:30necessarily pop off on the resume.
- 4:33Because of a if a good applicant is spending a lot of time, they
- 4:36can go to the website, right? They can read the About Me set
- 4:41the About Me, the about Us section.
- 4:44They can look at the team dynamic.
- 4:45They can look at. They can use things like Zoom
- 4:47Info or LinkedIn Navigator or LinkedIn.
- 4:49And they they can find ways to learn about the organization,
- 4:55but how often are you analyzing speaking time?
- 4:57So next was one example. Another example is how often are
- 5:02you looking at data as it pertains to the behaviors, the
- 5:08capabilities that a consistent amount of high potentials or
- 5:12impactful leaders inside of your company have and possess?
- 5:16And then take that continual data about who has been
- 5:19successful within your culture within the season of your
- 5:22organization. And then recreating the job
- 5:25description, recreating the needs, responsibilities,
- 5:30behaviors that you seek in the next round of your potential
- 5:34high potentials, the next round of those that you're going to
- 5:37inevitably embed inside of those teams to work with those high
- 5:39potentials. How often are you using that
- 5:42data to be? Again, more thoughtful, learn
- 5:45more strategic. Are you using the data only to
- 5:50identify your high potentials, identify who inevitably may drop
- 5:54off and have retention issues, and then just using it for
- 5:56productivity, using it for efficiency?
- 5:59Are you actually learning from it?
- 6:03That's the nuance difference. I think there's a difference
- 6:05between taking data, making tweaks, but then taking data
- 6:10making tweaks and then literally sitting down and pondering that
- 6:14data, having an all hands whiteboard meeting unpacking
- 6:19that data. How often does that?
- 6:23It's very similar to a trainer that trains you in the gym and
- 6:28puts you through an onslaught of all these different exercises
- 6:31and movements. And then eight months later,
- 6:35after you no longer can afford that trainer or you fit your
- 6:37body goals, you walk away not knowing one movement.
- 6:42You walk away not having any ability to expand upon movements
- 6:47that you have potentially learned.
- 6:49And now you're finding yourself empty, lost, and now you've
- 6:53gained the way back within six months.
- 6:56It's because you didn't learn. You were just finding
- 6:58efficiencies. And that is what I want more HR
- 7:02people to realize locked in on. Be thoughtful about.
- 7:07It's literally, in my personal opinion, not just about finding
- 7:10efficiencies, scaling, moving faster and doing so
- 7:16thoughtfully. It's about learning.
- 7:20It's about if you didn't have these technology, this
- 7:22technology at your at your disposal, you would still be
- 7:26able to make those thoughtful decisions because it's embedded
- 7:29in your subconscious. It's something you know, like
- 7:31the back of your hand you've learned.
- 7:35So whether that's recruiting, whether that's identifying your
- 7:38high potentials, whether that's organizing and putting A-Team
- 7:41together, learn, understand, use HR technology to impact your
- 7:50learning, growth and potential. As always, just a few thoughts,
- 7:56just a few perspectives. Let's talk soon.
