Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 2: There has to be a purpose of the work you're putting in. It could be making money for the family. Is it for developing yourself? Is it for getting to that next position or that next role? Is it to getting the knowledge to start your own business? Whatever it is?
- 0:01I remember years ago the hockey playoffs. My whole life stopped for that. That's what I was doing every night from 7 PM to 10 or 11 PM. And then I'd watch all the replays. But I look back now and count the hours in that week that I spent watching the playoffs, which was something for you to get to have something fun to do.
- 0:02And that takes your mind in a little different direction. Sometimes some people because I've hear a lot like I just need to decompress or I just need to stop thinking about the things that I need to do. And, and I looked at the amount of hours. In a week. So from seven to like 11 seven days a week.
- 0:03So you look at that as 28 hours in a week, I was watching that sports and that's probably not counting, watching the highlights in the morning again, and maybe some, and listen to it in the afternoon, I was 28 hours a week.
- 0:04Now I don't watch them anymore. Like I'll I'm over the playoffs. Now I might check out some of the finals, which is, which is fine. And everyone thinks differently. I'm really invested in myself in those times I'm really focusing. Cause usually that's around family time now, putting the kids to bed, getting them ready for bed and sorting that, that out there.
- 0:05That's the light, the part of the life I'm in right now. And I am really focusing on using that time. To really connect more with my family or continue to work on refrigeration mentor. How do I bring more value to the people that are inside our community? Figuring out how to grow the refrigeration industry, help the refrigeration industry. Because I know it's, it's a lot of work what we do and it's not easy work I'm teaching people, this is the stepping stone for your refrigeration career.
- 0:06A lot of technicians, there's some that can go out and do that 20, 30, 40 years of field work. But my goal with Refrigeration Mentor is have the field work as a stepping stone to that next level in your career. And that stepping stone is you helping other people get in. To replace the role that you, you, you did for so long.
- 0:07And then that's stepping stone into that next position. If it's sales position, if it is a business owner position, if it's a service manager position, is it engineering? Is it one of the dozens and dozens of roles that there are in the refrigeration industry or doing a lateral move from like.
- 0:08Construction to service or to controls. I think this is important. And I don't think a lot of people think about that. And there's nothing wrong with being a technician 30, 40 years, but we know this is a, this is a young man's job. Moving compressors, construction, working nights for six months straight.
- 0:09But it's, you don't want to be doing this at 60 years old, 65 years old. And people are thinking, well, that's when I should be retiring. I think that's, that's when you started another career, 60, 65 years old. , we're living longer. I think one of the big things is I watched and I think I talked about this already Arnold Schwarzenegger. His first career was Mr.
- 0:10Olympia working out, but inside that he was working on seven or eight different things. Like he would go to acting, he would work all day. He'd go to acting class for six hours. He'd go to speech to remove his accent, but he did this. He was working 16 hours, 18 hours a day on developing himself and he was doing construction, but he was learning real estate. Did he have help for sure? But he put the work in. Then his second career was acting. He did that for 30 years. And then he was in politics for another. 10 years or 20, you know what I mean? He had multiple careers. And I really think in the refrigeration industry, you can't. Cause I've had multiple careers now in the refrigeration industry.
- 0:11I would say this is my fourth career in the refrigeration industry in 20 years, from be being in the field as a technician doing construction and service. Then getting into working at a manufacturer, doing business development and training, and now starting and running a business for the refrigeration industry.
- 0:12So now I'm on that next journey in the refrigeration industry and learned along the way, you know, I failed along the way and I keep going forward and moving forward. And this is what you need to think about. That's why I've said that first time is like, what are these goals that you want? What do you want to achieve?
- 0:13Because I started in refrigeration because it was for me, it was going to be going to make money. You'd be able to travel the world. I'm going to meet, be able to meet different people. And I think that's where it really. It really took off. And that's why I still, I mean, the refrigeration industry, because there's so much opportunity.
- 0:14Are you going to become a millionaire overnight? No, you can't become a millionaire overnight in anything. And if you're someone that thinks, Oh, well, we're going to win the lotto and that's my, my ticket, it's not. I know too many people that have been spending 30 years every week buying lotto tickets, invest that money, take that money and use it.
- 0:15Usefully. Because I spent years doing that, being around people who were brainwashed on playing this dream for, for winning this thing. Take that dream and put it towards the things that you love and work towards and really make a difference in your life and your career.
- 0:16And some of it, it's not all about the money. It's just about security. Like having enough to, to take care of your family, go on that trip each year to live a you know, a comfortable life. That's what. Refrigeration is live a comfortable life, because you can make a couple hundred grand a year if you want.
- 0:17And then if you invest properly and then you do a hobby part time work, like maybe sell insurance or real estate or whatever it is to supplement the other things that you maybe want in life. Because we, we do really, you can do really well for the amount of hours that we put in or we can put in and the opportunity to do that.
- 0:18And if you do that while you're younger. When you don't have a family, it's a lot easier to make, to transition.
- 0:19And this is why you gotta really get those goals in place and will they change for sure, but you gotta get them in place and then start figuring out ways to work So if you want to double your income, Whatever it is right now, what can you do to get that? Can you do it in the role that you are working at now?
- 0:20Now, if you're an hourly, most of us are hourly paid. So how do I get to that double that income? Well, really you might have to work double the time. So if it's 2000 hours and you get that, that check, you got to work 4, 000 hours a year, that is a lot of hours. Now, can you take that other 2000 hours that you would put in, in your work and change it differently?
- 0:21Cause maybe you have to do that for now. But can you go inside that, inside your work and help that business make more money? If you can help your business make more profit, you can really help build culture around the people around you and they're bringing positive vibes there. And you can help people stay at your company.
- 0:22This is something, a plan that you can build with your, your company. And if not, there's another company that will want you to do. So I say this all the time. Like, people stay at their company because they, there's something keeping them there. And because they like the people, they like the money, they like the environment, they like the customers, whatever it is.
- 0:23That's why you stay at, stay at a company. If you don't like it, what you're doing, go somewhere else. And if you don't like the industry, get out of the industry and go do something else. Because you only live once, we're only here for a short amount of time, even though we live longer and longer, we're only here for a short amount of time, and you're going to take a good look at that, and look at what you need to do, and then really start doing it.
- 0:24Like I said, if you want to double your income, and you can't do it on what you're doing right now, what's that other thing that you need to do? Is it going door to door selling stuff? Door to door salesmen in the evenings? Or in the day if you're working night shift and you do that during the day.
- 0:25Like these are the things that are heard. Start selling insurance, or selling cutco knives, whatever it is. I did that in the past, so.
- 0:26But these are the things that are hard, and these are the things that you need to think about. Because sometimes you have to change what you're doing to get where you want to be. And it's, it's a lot of work. It is a lot of work, and those of you listening here, hopefully you're taking one or two things away. Cause I, I will sit here and I will talk and I will tell you about my experience and I will show you lots of different things, but until you start taking that action towards those things that you want in your life, that's, that's what needs to really happen.
- 0:27The things that you want in your life take time.
- 0:28Think about some of that stuff. How do you get to where you want to be in your life?
- 0:29Those of you who are listening on the podcast, write some stuff in the comments, take your time and think about some of this stuff, if you're driving right now, when you stop, write down a few things, how can you make a little bit difference in your life?
- 0:30That 1 percent today to better yourself tomorrow. Let's get a conversation going.
