- 0:07So before we get started, we're going to read
- 0:09and then I'll pray. Let's read the Word of God
- 0:12together. All right, so let us read. I'm going
- 0:16to start off in verse 4 of chapter 2 and then
- 0:19go through 14. We're going to be doing chapter
- 0:202, verse 7 to 14. Whoever says, I know him, but
- 0:25does not keep his commandments is a liar and
- 0:27the truth is not in him. But whoever keeps his
- 0:30word in him, truly the love of God is perfected.
- 0:34By this we may know that we are in him. Whoever
- 0:38says he abides in him ought to walk in the same
- 0:41way in which he walked. Beloved, I am writing
- 0:45to you no new commandment, but an old commandment
- 0:48that you had from the beginning. The old commandment
- 0:53is the word that you have heard. At the same
- 0:56time, it is a new commandment. That I am writing
- 0:59to you which is true in him and in you because
- 1:04the darkness is passing away and the true light
- 1:07is already shining. Whoever says he's in the
- 1:10light and hates his brother is still in darkness.
- 1:13Whoever loves his brother abides in the light
- 1:15and in him there is no cause for stumbling. But
- 1:20whoever hates his brother I'm writing to you,
- 1:30little children, because your sins are forgiven
- 1:33for his namesake. I'm writing to you, fathers,
- 1:36because you know him who is from the beginning.
- 1:39I'm writing to you, young men, because you have
- 1:42overcome the evil one. I'm writing to you, children,
- 1:45because you know the father. I write to you,
- 1:49fathers, because... You know him who was from
- 1:52the beginning. I write to you, young men, because
- 1:54you are strong and the word of God abides in
- 1:57you and you have overcome the evil one. Father,
- 2:01I want to thank you so much for your word. I
- 2:03ask you, Lord, that you would guide us as we
- 2:06go through these seven verses. Help us to understand
- 2:09the importance of your word and help us to understand
- 2:13the reflection of Christ in our lives as we love
- 2:16one another. Lord, we give you honor, glory,
- 2:19and praise in Jesus' name. Amen. So one of the
- 2:24things I want us to understand, there are a few
- 2:27things I need you to pay attention to as we go
- 2:29through this. There are several things you must
- 2:31pay close attention to. First, John states eight
- 2:35times, I am writing to you. Second, four times
- 2:41he mentions commandment, twice a old and twice
- 2:44a new commandment. And third, darkness is mentioned
- 2:49four times. So why is this important? Not only
- 2:55these, he also deals with the word hate. He deals
- 2:59with the word light. He deals with the word love.
- 3:01But these main focuses are extremely present
- 3:04here. And when God mentions things like that,
- 3:09it is for us to pay attention to. And obviously
- 3:13the most glaring is. I'm writing to you. To walk
- 3:18as Christ walked is to love your brother as he
- 3:21loved us. You are your brother's keeper as Christ
- 3:25is to his brothers and sisters. Christ is your
- 3:32keeper. As a matter of fact, the reality of this
- 3:34truth shows that that is where the doctrine of
- 3:37perseverance of the saints comes from. You persevere
- 3:41because Christ is your keeper. understanding
- 3:47that we are responsible to one another. Now,
- 3:53so when he says that there is a commandment,
- 3:57a new one, an old one that was given, and it's
- 3:59also a new one, you're going to see this in a
- 4:02minute. So in John 13, 34 through 35, he says,
- 4:06a new commandment I give to you that you love
- 4:10one another. Just as I have loved you, you also
- 4:14are to love one another. By this, all people
- 4:17will know that you are my disciples if you have
- 4:19love for one another. You see, in the Old Testament,
- 4:24he said, love your neighbor. Jesus summarizes
- 4:27the commandments concerning your neighbor, and
- 4:31he says, love your neighbor as yourself. This
- 4:34new commandment that Christ gives, though it
- 4:36is an old one, is that you should love the family.
- 4:41Do you love each other? That is the question
- 4:47here. Do we love the family? Love for one another.
- 4:52The world will know that we are his disciples
- 4:54when we love one another. Now in first John chapter
- 5:00two, verse seven through 11, kind of clarifies
- 5:02this reality. Beloved, I am writing you. He's
- 5:08not writing to everybody. John is writing to
- 5:12you. He's saying to the believers, That have
- 5:16been dispersed and are scattered. And he's not
- 5:20writing a new commandment. No new commandment.
- 5:23But an old commandment. This is a commandment
- 5:27that's been from the beginning. That you had
- 5:29from the beginning. But what is that? We know
- 5:32what that is. We know because Cain had just killed
- 5:37his brother. And Jesus goes to him and says,
- 5:41Cain, where's your brother? And Cain says, am
- 5:44I my brother's keeper? Yes, you are. This is
- 5:49nothing new. As a matter of fact, we know because
- 5:52Christ loved us. The reality of love is from
- 6:00the beginning. And we know that he loves us because
- 6:04he has loved us before he created anything. So
- 6:09the old commandment is the word that you have
- 6:11heard. What old commandment? To love one another.
- 6:15This idea that God loves us and has sent propitiation
- 6:24for us, which we've read previously. This old
- 6:28commandment that the word that you have heard.
- 6:31We also know that because in John 1, 1, 1, John
- 6:361, 1, it says that which was from the beginning,
- 6:40which. We have heard, which we have seen with
- 6:43our own eyes, which we've looked upon and have
- 6:45touched with our hands concerning the word of
- 6:48life. In the beginning was the word and the word
- 6:50was with God and the word was God. The Logos,
- 6:54the word became flesh. It is an old commandment
- 6:58from the ancient of days. So this word that we
- 7:05have heard to love one another. At the same time,
- 7:10and this term at the same time means again or
- 7:12on the other hand. On the other hand, it is a
- 7:14new commandment. We know what that is because
- 7:17Jesus gives it. Love one another, not just the
- 7:23neighbor. We know that the Jews were commanded
- 7:26to love their neighbors because when a sojourner
- 7:28would come into the country and into the city,
- 7:32they as Jews were to host them. and take them
- 7:37in and feed them and house them. And then eventually,
- 7:39when they leave, to send them off with food.
- 7:43They were to be good neighbors to the sojourner.
- 7:48And so what we see here is this new commandment
- 7:51is, are you loving towards one another? With
- 7:55that, I'm writing to you, he continues in 1 John
- 7:592, which is true in him and in you. What's true
- 8:05in Christ? Love. He is the word. He is love.
- 8:12And if he is love and he is in you, then you
- 8:16are to love. You are to walk as he walked. And
- 8:19that's what he means here. Which is true in him,
- 8:22in Christ. And is also in you because love lives
- 8:25in you. Because the darkness is passing away.
- 8:29I love this statement. in a state of transition.
- 8:37Now I know, I think we can all agree, that if
- 8:42we were looking to hope or looking to win on
- 8:46this battlefield, it's not going to happen. The
- 8:49reality is we've already won in Christ. But this
- 8:55idea where we know that the world will get darker,
- 9:02But here John states something that's quite remarkable.
- 9:05Darkness is in a state of transition. There's
- 9:10something we know concerning the reality of darkness.
- 9:14And that is what? The darker the darkness, the
- 9:19brighter the light. As dark gets darker, light
- 9:24gets brighter. And there's one thing that we
- 9:26know. Darkness cannot and will not. ever have
- 9:30victory over light because light chases away
- 9:33the darkness so the reality is is that darkness
- 9:37is passing away darkness is in a state of transition
- 9:41because we see that in creation in genesis 1
- 9:45in the beginning god created the heavens and
- 9:50the earth and the earth was void and without
- 9:51form and and there was darkness over the face
- 9:55of the deep and the spirit of god was hovering
- 9:57over the God said, let there be light. And what
- 10:02happens to the darkness? Whoosh, it's gone. You
- 10:06turn off all the lights in this room. If there
- 10:09is one light, it will start to eat away the darkness.
- 10:13And that's what he means here. Just because we
- 10:17live in a dark world and the darkness seems to
- 10:19get darker, we should not fear that the darkness
- 10:23will overtake us. Because where darkness is,
- 10:26Light is brighter. And that's what he means here.
- 10:31And, he says, continues, and the true, the real,
- 10:35the genuine light. And we know what this word
- 10:38is in the original because it's dealing with
- 10:40the issue of the light of Christ, the phos. The
- 10:44light of Christ is already shining. What a victory
- 10:49statement. What a confidence we have as believers.
- 10:56That even in the midst of the darkest darkness
- 10:58you can imagine, the brightest light of Christ
- 11:02is already shining. And this word already shining
- 11:07means even now and before now continues to give
- 11:11light. In other words, he was giving light before
- 11:14creation and he's even now giving light and that
- 11:18light will continue to give light. Wow. We will
- 11:24never. be in darkness again. Whoever says he
- 11:28is, or he exists in the light, the light of Christ,
- 11:33and hates, detests, has ill will, or abhors his
- 11:39brother, who is a fellow believer and a family
- 11:41member, united by our common bond, is still in
- 11:46darkness. You cannot say that you exist in the
- 11:50light of Christ and still hate. Or have ill will
- 11:55against your brother. Who is a believer. One
- 11:59who is supposed to be in common union with you.
- 12:04And still be in darkness. And expect to be in
- 12:09the light. Because you won't be. The reality
- 12:11is you are still in darkness. You remain in the
- 12:15ignorant. You remain ignorant of divine things.
- 12:19And you remain in wickedness and misery. To not
- 12:24love your brother is to not exist in the light.
- 12:33But you still remain in your wickedness, in your
- 12:35misery, in your sin. Whoever loves his brother
- 12:39abides, means to be held or kept continually.
- 12:44This is again proof that we persevere. That Christ
- 12:51holds us and keeps us continually. Because he
- 12:55is our keeper. This understanding of abiding.
- 13:00Do you abide in Christ? Are you being held and
- 13:04kept continually in the light? And in him there
- 13:08is no cause for stumbling. In a brother or sister
- 13:12who is held and kept continually in the light
- 13:16of Christ. Will not stumble. He doesn't walk
- 13:21in the dark. Even the darkest of paths are his
- 13:26light to us. We never really walk stumbling.
- 13:33And that's what he means here. There is no cause
- 13:36for us to stumble. But whoever hates his brother.
- 13:41This word hate is a very clear term which we've
- 13:44just read previously. Is in the darkness and
- 13:48walks in the darkness. Continues to live in wickedness
- 13:53and misery. And does not know where he is going.
- 13:57He is walking and leading away in his life in
- 14:03the blindness of his sin. Because the darkness
- 14:07has blinded his eyes. Wow. So why so clearly
- 14:15stated, John? Why is he clearly stating this?
- 14:20Because there was a continual problem among those
- 14:24who say they believe. They did not love one another.
- 14:29It's a demand to be right. It's a demand to be
- 14:32in control. It's a demand and all these other
- 14:33things. And they weren't loving. And Jesus says
- 14:37it this way in John 11, 10. He says, Jesus said,
- 14:40if anyone walks in the night, he stumbles because
- 14:43the light is not in him. So you can't say you
- 14:48are in Christ and walk as if you're not in him.
- 14:55That's hypocrisy, obviously. I love in Pilgrim's
- 14:59Progress what John Bunyan states here. Christian
- 15:04states concerning talkative, quote unquote. This
- 15:09is in play one. If you ever read it, it's a play.
- 15:14And he gets together with, he's talking, I believe
- 15:20he's talking to Pliable at this point. I can't
- 15:22remember if it's Pliable or, I can't remember
- 15:26who it is. And Christian had just got done talking
- 15:30to talkative. Talkative is a terrible dude. Talkative
- 15:36is just that dude that just talks but doesn't
- 15:39live. He just blabs. And that's the point here.
- 15:44As a matter of fact, Christian states it this
- 15:46way, quote unquote, for my part, I am of opinion
- 15:50that he, talkative, has by his wicked life caused
- 15:55many to stumble and fall and will be if God prevents
- 16:00not. the ruin of many more. Quote, unquote, John
- 16:06Bunyan. Wow. This type of quote, unquote, believer
- 16:14is really the ruin of many people. And this is
- 16:19what John was stating concerning the reality
- 16:21of, am I walking as Christ walked? And if I am
- 16:25walking as Christ walked, I will not be a stumbling
- 16:28block. Nor will I stumble in the dark as if I
- 16:33can't see. Second, have you ever asked why did
- 16:37God give us his word and why Jesus is the Logos?
- 16:41Why is Jesus the word? Why did God give us the
- 16:46Bible? What's the purpose? In 2 Peter chapter
- 16:511, 3 through 4, his divine power has granted
- 16:54to us all things that pertain to life and godliness.
- 16:59Through the knowledge of him who called us to
- 17:02his own glory and excellence. By which he has
- 17:06granted to us his precious and very great promises.
- 17:12So that through them you may become partakers
- 17:16of the divine nature. Having escaped from the
- 17:19corruption that is in the world because of sinful
- 17:23desire. Why has God given us his word? That we
- 17:28may know him. The one place you can come to know
- 17:33Jesus. This is important. Because far too often,
- 17:39we have this statement. You are the only Bible
- 17:43anybody will ever read. If you're the only Bible
- 17:46anybody will ever read, you're a terrible Bible.
- 17:50Because there's one thing I know about my Bible.
- 17:53It's the inerrant, infallible word of God. And
- 17:57I am not. And I'm a very inconsistent example
- 18:01sometimes of this word. So don't be the only
- 18:06Bible that someone will read. Be the one who
- 18:10will quote the Bible. Because man does not live
- 18:15by every example you show or that comes out of
- 18:20your mouth. Man lives by every word that comes
- 18:22out of the mouth of God. Think about that. You
- 18:25aren't. sharper than a two -edged sword, dividing
- 18:28soul and spirit, bone and marrow, judging the
- 18:32thoughts and intentions of the heart. The word
- 18:34is. And so when we look at this, we know why
- 18:38the word is important. We know why he's given
- 18:41it to us. As a matter of fact, in 1 John chapter
- 18:4512, verse 14, 12 and 4, chapter 2, sorry. 1 John
- 18:49chapter 2, verse 12 through 14. Listen to what
- 18:53John states here. I am writing to you, little
- 18:57children, because your sins are forgiven. I want
- 19:02you to get this term. What happens here is many
- 19:05pastors will go, oh, do a little, they'll do
- 19:09a children's, little children's corner thing
- 19:13and they'll go, listen, little children. This
- 19:16isn't John writing to little kids. This is John
- 19:21writing to you. Because Jesus calls you children.
- 19:26He calls me child. He calls you child. Those
- 19:30who believe in his name have been given the right
- 19:33to become a child of God. We are children. And
- 19:37he's implying here the issue of immaturity. Little
- 19:40children. Little children don't know much. So
- 19:45he's implying that for those who are just starting
- 19:49off in their Christian walk, who are immature
- 19:52in the faith, The one thing that is the reminder
- 19:56for you is that you are forgiven. That's the
- 20:02simplest thing, right? For a child, they want
- 20:07to know that mom and dad aren't upset. That's
- 20:10what he's implying here. I'm writing to you,
- 20:11little children, to you. And I'm a little child,
- 20:15to be honest with you. You're like, you're a
- 20:17pastor. You shouldn't be looking. There's a lot
- 20:20of things I'm immature in, a lot of things I'm
- 20:23mature in. How about the things I'm not maturing?
- 20:27I got some work to do. So he says, I'm writing
- 20:30to you little children because your sins are
- 20:32forgiven. This word sins is harmatia. And the
- 20:35reason why this word is important is because
- 20:37it's where we get the word harmatology from,
- 20:41which is the study of sin. It's the doctrine
- 20:43of sin. And this word is important because we
- 20:48need to know why we're forgiven or what we're
- 20:50forgiven from, which is our sins. And the word
- 20:54forgiven here means to send away. As far as the
- 20:59east is from the west. The deepest part of the
- 21:02ocean. Christ has sent away your sin. He has
- 21:09removed it. And when he has removed it, for your
- 21:13sake? No. For his name's sake. For his name's
- 21:18sake, you are forgiven. It's his name is on this
- 21:24work. And what's interesting, he says, this word
- 21:27sake means on account of his name, we have obtained
- 21:30something. It's the name of Christ that you have
- 21:37obtained forgiveness. It's on account of his
- 21:40name. It's on account of his name that you are
- 21:44considered the righteousness of God. It's on
- 21:46the count of his name that you are. are delivered.
- 21:50It's on account of his name that you are redeemed.
- 21:53It's on account of his name that you are regenerated,
- 21:57justified, sanctified. His name, it's on account
- 22:04of his name that you are all these things. And
- 22:09in John 1, 12, but to all who did receive him,
- 22:13who believe in his name. He gave the right to
- 22:17become children of God. On account of his name,
- 22:19you're a child of the living God. It's his name.
- 22:24And there is power in the name. In Acts 10 .43,
- 22:29to him all the prophets bear witness that everyone
- 22:33who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins
- 22:37through his name. You have been forgiven. Why?
- 22:43Because his name is God saves. That's his name.
- 22:48His name is God forgives. That's his name. His
- 22:54name is the righteous one. God the righteous
- 22:56one. That's his name. His name is God heals.
- 23:01That's his name. I am the bread. I am the everlasting
- 23:04water. That's his name. What a wonderful name.
- 23:11In 1 John 1 .1. Well, let me just do this. Verse
- 23:1513, I'm sorry. I'm writing to you fathers because
- 23:19you know him. Now, I shared this earlier. When
- 23:25we lived in Delaware and my kids first learned
- 23:29father and mother in Greek, they'd never stopped
- 23:35saying it to me. So they wouldn't call me dad
- 23:38or pops or they'd call me pater. Because that's
- 23:43what father is in Greek. And they do it with
- 23:47the typical real bad English. It's not like they're
- 23:53Hispanic. They should know how to roll the R's.
- 23:56Pater. But they don't do that. They go, hey,
- 23:59pater. Pater. It's true. But it's good. What's
- 24:09implied here is that he's implying maturity.
- 24:12So you see the extreme. You see little children
- 24:14immature. Here, a father is seen as mature. The
- 24:19one who is the caregiver, the mature. And a father
- 24:23implies that we know things. What do we know
- 24:27as fathers? You know him who was from the beginning.
- 24:31We know him. And that's why in 1 John 1, which
- 24:36I read earlier, that which was from the beginning,
- 24:39which you have heard. which we have seen with
- 24:42our own eyes, which we have looked upon and have
- 24:46touched with our own hands concerning life. We
- 24:49know him. And we know we know them. It's sort
- 24:53of like when you come home and your kids are
- 24:55like really little. I used to go through this.
- 24:59Now my kids never rush the door. I walk in, Mocha
- 25:04shows up. My dog. She's like. You know, she's
- 25:09wiggling and, but she knows me. I wish my kids
- 25:12knew me like that. Right? But what happens is
- 25:20they hear the voice of the father and they come
- 25:22running in. Dad's home. Pater. And they get excited.
- 25:29And that's the implication here. That little
- 25:32children know him. My sheep know me and they
- 25:36know my voice. And he even says to Philip, Philip
- 25:41goes, show us the father. And he says, Philip,
- 25:44have you, have I been with you so long that you
- 25:47still don't know me? You should know me. And
- 25:55we know because he also then says to Philip,
- 25:59you know him and have seen him. And then he writes
- 26:03to the young people, the young adults. Not really
- 26:09to the young adults, it's to us. We are fathers
- 26:12and mothers. We are mature and we are also little
- 26:15children. And there are times when we are also
- 26:17young adults. Young men and young women. I'm
- 26:23writing to you, young men, because you have overcome
- 26:26the evil one. Interesting that they put the word
- 26:30one in there. Because I really don't want to
- 26:33just overcome the devil. Like, what is that?
- 26:37How about if I overcome the evil that's in me?
- 26:40To overcome sin. I want to know that I have overcome
- 26:44evil. And that's what John is implying here.
- 26:48This is not particularly talking about the devil,
- 26:50though we have overcome the devil. The question
- 26:53is, have you overcome the evil that is present
- 26:56there? And the way we overcome is that we are
- 27:02strong in the Lord. In Ephesians 6 .10, finally
- 27:05be strong in the Lord and in the strength of
- 27:07his might. I don't want to just be strong in
- 27:10the Lord and in the strength of his might when
- 27:12I have to deal with the devil, which barely ever
- 27:16happens. How about being strong in the Lord and
- 27:20in the strength of his might when I look at myself
- 27:22in the mirror and I have to deal with my junk?
- 27:26And I go, why do I keep doing the things I don't
- 27:28want to do, but the things I hate I keep on doing?
- 27:33Because I have not, because I haven't realized
- 27:37that I have overcome the evil already. And that's
- 27:42why Paul states in Ephesians 6 .10, finally be
- 27:45strong in the Lord and in strength of his might.
- 27:50So this implication of being a young man and
- 27:52a young woman is also implying this understanding
- 27:55of what it means to overcome. If you want to
- 27:58overcome, you must be self -controlled. Older
- 28:01men teach the younger men to be self -controlled.
- 28:06We know what the fruit of the Spirit is. The
- 28:08fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience,
- 28:10kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness,
- 28:12and self -control. Self -control. Is the strength
- 28:20of the Lord and his might on display. I have
- 28:24truly overcome evil. And then he says again,
- 28:28I write to you children. Because you know the
- 28:31father. Yes, we do know him. Which I had said
- 28:36earlier. As a child, as a father walks in the
- 28:41door from a hard day at work. And they hear dad's
- 28:45voice. They come running. Because they know him.
- 28:49Now, for those of us who are fathers of girls,
- 28:53they know exactly what to do. Being jerks. They're
- 28:58being jerks. Because they know. They take advantage
- 29:01of dad. Because we just, that's my baby girl.
- 29:08Boys, we just like toughen up and suck it up.
- 29:10Let's go. Be a man. Girls are like, we melt.
- 29:15It's not fair. But that's the implication here.
- 29:19We know the father. We know we can go to him
- 29:22and sit before him and ask of him and he will
- 29:26give and seek and we will find because the father
- 29:29wants to give good gifts. So as children, we
- 29:34know the father. Verse 14, I write to you fathers
- 29:42because you know him. who was from the beginning.
- 29:44And again, he brings us back to the same understanding.
- 29:47Not only do the children know the heavenly father,
- 29:52but the fathers know the heavenly father because
- 29:56he's from the beginning. And I love this statement
- 29:59here. It's the reminder when Jesus says, I am
- 30:02the alpha and omega. He is the everlasting father.
- 30:06We know him. He is in you. He is light present
- 30:12in you. We know him. I write to you, young men,
- 30:20because you are strong. I kind of like that.
- 30:26As children, we depend on the father to be our
- 30:29strength. As fathers, we know him and we've learned
- 30:34to grow and know that he is all he says he is.
- 30:38As young men, We need to be reminded. Why? Because
- 30:43young people think they are invincible, but they're
- 30:48not. So again, John is reminding them. I'm writing
- 30:54to you, young men, young women, young people,
- 30:57because you are strong in Christ. Why are you
- 31:02strong in Christ? Because the word of God abides
- 31:05in you. Christ lives in you. His word is present
- 31:10in you and he is present in you. And you have
- 31:15overcome evil. It's more than just the evil one.
- 31:21And this is important because we have settled
- 31:23that our battle is with a fallen angel. That's
- 31:32bad theology. We get to blame. The creature.
- 31:40It's the devil's fault. The devil made me do
- 31:43it. And here the reality is, if we overcome,
- 31:49we have overcome evil. How have we overcome evil?
- 31:55I asked the question earlier. Why did God give
- 31:58us his word? Because it requires that I read
- 32:03it. What good is the word? If it's closed, it's
- 32:08sitting on your end table. What good is the word
- 32:12if I don't have a Bible app on my phone or it's
- 32:18off? What good is the word? What good is the
- 32:21word if you don't read it? Why is John saying
- 32:27I'm writing to you? Because he's telling them
- 32:30you have to read. I'm writing to you that you
- 32:35may read it so that you will know. The question
- 32:41is, do you know? Do you read it? Or do you just
- 32:47come on Sunday because you think Sunday's enough?
- 32:50It's enough word for me. I get my word on Sunday
- 32:54morning and I go home and I'm good for the rest
- 32:56of the week. Because such and such gave a good
- 33:00message or I learned this. No, man does not live
- 33:06by bread alone, but by every word that comes
- 33:07from the mouth of God. And you have heard from
- 33:10many pastors. I'm sure even I've said it, right?
- 33:14If you feed your physical body, you got to feed
- 33:17your spiritual body. I mean, after all, we don't
- 33:21want to be spiritually initiated. It's more than
- 33:24that. The very life of being comes from God's
- 33:28mouth. And he, in his wisdom and kindness and
- 33:33goodness, has given us his word, which he has
- 33:36written through men for you to read. Spend time
- 33:41in it. If you read one chapter, it'll take you
- 33:45less than five minutes. Even if you listen to
- 33:48it. And my challenge to you is if you are going
- 33:51to read it, read it out loud so you hear yourself.
- 33:54Because faith comes from a hearing and hearing
- 33:56that of the word of Christ. How important is
- 34:00the word to you? Or as I said to the young ones,
- 34:05is it boring? Granted, the begats are hard to
- 34:13get through. But there's a reason why it's there.
- 34:16And all the begats give you life. So enjoy reading
- 34:21the begats. As you get through the begats, you
- 34:24move on to another thing. But all of it's important.
- 34:29All of it's important. All of it is life -giving.
- 34:35How important is the Word to you? We are a Word
- 34:40-centered church because we are Christ -centered
- 34:44people. Be in the Word. Read it. Because He gave
- 34:50it to you. Father, I want to thank you so much
- 34:54for your goodness and faithfulness. Thank you
- 34:56for your word. Thank you for what you're doing
- 34:59in our lives. Lord, I do pray that you would
- 35:02give us a hunger and thirst for your word, but
- 35:04that we, when we are initiated and we are not
- 35:07hungry because we have gone beyond the spiritual
- 35:11pain of hunger, where we have just surrendered
- 35:16to a life of lifelessness. I pray that you would
- 35:24wake us up through your word. I have hidden your
- 35:32word in my heart that I might not sin against
- 35:34you. How can a young man keep his way pure by
- 35:38living according to your word? Lord, I thank
- 35:42you and praise you for your word. And I most
- 35:45of all thank you and praise you for you, the
- 35:49living and true God, the one whom we worship.
- 35:53And thank you that you have given us an opportunity
- 35:55to know you, not only in spirit, but also in
- 35:59truth.
