- 1:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Hello there! My name is Donna and welcome to the second week of my October
- 1:18biweekly remarkable bi weekly commentary.
- 1:24And I want for today to address the topic of unaffordable access technology.
- 1:34So what is unaffordable access technology all about?
- 1:40Okay. This is something that has perpetuated over the years,
- 1:49and it does not seem to be getting any better.
- 1:54It is a chronic challenge slash problem for many of us who cannot afford to
- 2:04have the best and greatest technology under our fingers.
- 2:09And especially when it comes to access technology.
- 2:13It continues to be out of the reach of those who really,
- 2:18really need it. And it affects different groups in different ways in that if we cannot
- 2:26have the best and greatest access technology,
- 2:31it means that we are being left behind when it comes to engaging and communicating
- 2:39online. No matter which industry it is, it could be the banking industry,
- 2:45the travel industry. It could be, you know, doing your shopping,
- 2:49anything like that. That's what it is all about.
- 2:54Okay. So. It's unaffordable to so many.
- 3:03And this obviously leads to falling behind when it comes to groups such as seniors,
- 3:10those who are technically shy, those who simply cannot afford to purchase
- 3:16access technology to help them out.
- 3:19Okay. And. Developers, designers and companies continue to price
- 3:29their products beyond the reach of the pockets of.
- 3:38Those customers I just talked about, it's beyond their reach because they cannot
- 3:43afford it. And especially so for access technology.
- 3:49You know, you have a lot of people who depend on screen readers,
- 3:53for example, who depend on technology that enlarges their screens,
- 4:02who depend on technology for different reasons.
- 4:06Access technology is unaffordable, and we need to find ways to bring down the
- 4:13prices of these pieces of technology.
- 4:18We need to convince society as a whole that access technology benefits so many people,
- 4:27millions of people worldwide, not just seniors,
- 4:32not just the technology, not just persons with disabilities.
- 4:36It benefits many, many others.
- 4:39And this is what I think we're missing out on.
- 4:45Now. Is it because developers and manufacturers and others believe that it's a
- 4:50very small market? Is this why they do not put much effort into making sure that access
- 5:00technology is made available in an affordable manner to others?
- 5:08What is it? So we need to start working on developers,
- 5:17designers and companies and manufacturers to get them to buy into a truthful
- 5:27fact that access technology is unaffordable because of their present barriers and
- 5:35attitudes. But access technology can be beneficial to many,
- 5:43many people. In addition to seniors, the technically shy persons with
- 5:48disabilities. And let me just say that the markets,
- 5:53the consumer markets for seniors and for persons with disabilities is growing rapidly.
- 6:02So we need to step in and start pushing developers,
- 6:07designers, companies and manufacturers to find ways to make access technology more
- 6:16affordable and more available.
