- 0:13There are some places in the Bible where the geography seems to preach
- 0:16its own sermon. There are mountains to climb,
- 0:20valleys to cross, wildernesses to endure,
- 0:23and roads that lead us somewhere. But few
- 0:27places illustrate the direction of a man's life quite
- 0:31like the Sorek Valley. Samson was raised
- 0:35in the hills above the Philistine plain. He had been chosen,
- 0:38empowered, and given a purpose by God. Yet,
- 0:42as you follow his story, one phrase keeps appearing:
- 0:46Samson went down.
- 0:49Long before the Philistines brought Samson down physically,
- 0:53Samson had already been going down spiritually.
- 0:57Welcome to Traveler's Tales produced by Enjoying the Journey. I'm Greg
- 1:01Dowdy. We're grateful for our friend and researcher John Buckner
- 1:05for his help with the historical and geographical background
- 1:09for today's journey. Our destination today is the
- 1:13Sorek Valley, the setting for one of Scripture's most familiar and
- 1:17most tragic stories. Judges 16:4
- 1:22says, and it came to pass afterward that he loved a woman in the valley
- 1:26of Sorek, whose name was Delilah. The Sorek Valley
- 1:29is actually a series of interconnected valleys and
- 1:33ridges stretching westward from the central highlands of Israel toward
- 1:37the Philistine plain. In Bible times, this rugged country formed a
- 1:41natural barrier between Israel in the hills and the Philistines along the coastal
- 1:45plain. This was Samson country. Before Samson
- 1:49was ever born, the angel of the Lord told his mother that he would
- 1:53begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines.
- 1:57God placed Samson in exactly the right place at exactly
- 2:01the right time for exactly the right purpose.
- 2:05But Samson had a problem. He was supposed to stand
- 2:09against the influence of the Philistines. Yet he repeatedly
- 2:13found himself attracted to it. Judges 14:1
- 2:18says, and Samson went down to Timnath.
- 2:22That little geographical detail becomes an almost
- 2:26haunting picture of his life. Samson went down
- 2:30from the Israelite hill country toward the Philistine plain, and spiritually
- 2:35his life began moving in the same direction.
- 2:39Now, his parents warned him, they pleaded with him,
- 2:42but Samson insisted on marrying the Philistine woman
- 2:45he had found in Timnath. That relationship ended disastrously.
- 2:50Later, Samson fell in love again. This time,
- 2:53the woman was from the Valley of Sorek. Her name was Delilah.
- 2:58Interestingly, the Bible never actually identifies
- 3:02Delilah as a Philistine. Unlike Samson's early relationships,
- 3:07she appears to have been a local woman from the Sorek borderlands.
- 3:11Her name is Hebrew, and she lived in the same general region
- 3:15as Samson. Perhaps Samson thought he had finally made a better
- 3:19choice. But there is one sobering detail in the biblical account.
- 3:23The Bible tells us that Samson loved Delilah. It never
- 3:28tells us that Delilah loved Samson. The lords of the Philistines
- 3:32came up from the plain and offered Delilah an enormous amount of
- 3:36money to discover the secret of Samson's strength, and she accepted.
- 3:41Slowly and persistently, she wore Samson down
- 3:44until he finally told her all his heart.
- 3:48Samson knew that he was playing with danger. He'd escaped
- 3:52before. He had defeated Philistines before. He had experienced
- 3:57supernatural strength before. And perhaps that was his greatest
- 4:01danger. Samson had become so accustomed to God's power
- 4:05that he began to presume upon God's presence.
- 4:09Judges 16:20 contains some of the saddest words in
- 4:13Samson's story: And he wist not that
- 4:17the Lord was departed from him. The man who had been strong
- 4:21enough to carry away the gates of a city was
- 4:25not strong enough to overcome the sin he refused to
- 4:29surrender. There's a powerful warning here for every believer.
- 4:34Delilah's name carries the idea of being delicate or feeble.
- 4:38Samson's downfall did not begin with something that looked
- 4:42stronger than he was. It came through something attractive,
- 4:45familiar, and seemingly manageable, which is
- 4:49often the way temptation works. The most dangerous sin
- 4:53in your life may not be the one that frightens you. It may be the
- 4:56one you've grown comfortable with. You know, the temptation
- 5:00you think you can control, the habit you keep excusing,
- 5:04that relationship you know is pulling you away from God,
- 5:08that compromise that seems small enough to manage.
- 5:11Sin will always promise you more than it gives
- 5:15and eventually take more than you intended to surrender.
- 5:19Samson thought he could play with temptation and remain strong,
- 5:23but the thing he embraced eventually betrayed him.
- 5:27And notice the direction of Samson's life. Judges 14
- 5:31says Samson went down to Timnath. Judges 16
- 5:36says that after his capture, the Philistines brought him down to Gaza.
- 5:41The man God had raised up to deliver Israel
- 5:44was brought down by the very enemy he had been called
- 5:48to defeat. His eyes were put out. He was bound
- 5:53with fetters of brass. The mighty Samson became
- 5:56a prisoner grinding in the Philistine prison house.
- 6:00But thankfully, Samson's story does not end there.
- 6:04In his final moments, Samson turned again to the Lord.
- 6:08O Lord God, remember me, I pray thee, and strengthen
- 6:12me, I pray thee. Only this once, and God heard
- 6:16him. Now, that does not erase the consequences of
- 6:20Samson's choices, but it does remind us that failure
- 6:23does not have to have the final word. Maybe you
- 6:27recognize that you have been going down spiritually. Your heart
- 6:32is colder than it once was. Your prayer life has weakened.
- 6:35You've tolerated something you once would have resisted. You've drifted
- 6:39closer to the world and farther from the Lord.
- 6:43Don't wait until sin takes you farther down.
- 6:47Turn to God now. Confess what needs to be confessed.
- 6:51Forsake what needs to be forsaken. Stop trusting your own strength
- 6:55and return to dependence upon His. There is one
- 6:59final geographical detail in Samson's story that I love.
- 7:03After Samson died in Gaza, Judges 16:31 says his family
- 7:07came for him. They took his body from Philistine territory and
- 7:12brought him up, up from Gaza, up from
- 7:15the Philistine plain, back into the hills,
- 7:19back home. Samson's life is a
- 7:22sobering reminder that compromise always
- 7:26takes us in the wrong direction, but it is also a reminder
- 7:30that when we have fallen, the answer is not to keep going down Look
- 7:35up. Turn back to the God who called you,
- 7:38the God who loves you, and the God whose strength has always been
- 7:41greater than your own. The Sorek Valley still whispers
- 7:45its warning: never become comfortable with
- 7:49the very thing God has called you to overcome.
