- 0:00Redge: Hello, Dork Squad! Redge here, ears perked, quills polished, and eager to hear from our dear listeners.
- 0:08Jonathan: And Jonathan here, reporting for Hotline duty.
- 0:11Redge: Questions, curious conundrums, heartfelt messages, you name it, I'm ready!
- 0:17Jonathan: How about we get this fall slash winter edition of the Mr.
- 0:20Jonathan: Redge Hotline started?
- 0:22Redge: Prepare yourselves for some hotline happiness, friends.
- 0:26Jonathan: Redge, is that a crumb on your microphone?
- 0:29Redge: It's an audio enhancement.
- 0:31Jonathan: An audio what?
- 0:32Redge: A little snack makes everything sound better.
- 0:35Jonathan: Well, I'm not sure that's how microphones work, but um hey, you do you, Redge.
- 0:40Jonathan: Let's open the hotline.
- 0:50Mr. Redge Hotline Message: Hello, friend.
- 0:51Mr. Redge Hotline Message: You've reached Mr.
- 0:52Mr. Redge Hotline Message: Redge's hotline.
- 0:54Mr. Redge Hotline Message: What are you curious about today?
- 0:57Jonathan: Our first question comes from Francis in Vancouver, British Columbia.
- 1:01Jonathan: Frances asks Redge, What's your favorite type of tree?
- 1:06Redge: Ah, what a splendid question, Frances.
- 1:09Redge: I actually have two favorite trees.
- 1:12Redge: The first is the magnificent Redwood Tree, where Jonathan discovered the portal into Once Upon a Time.
- 1:21Jonathan: That tree changed my life forever.
- 1:23Jonathan: But you promised Frances that you'd reveal your other favorite tree in this very hotline.
- 1:30Redge: Oh, indeed I did.
- 1:31Redge: Uh let's listen to this clip from our episode Jolly Holly Hedgehog on my family's tradition and see if the answer lies within.
- 1:42Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: My great great grandmother, Frida, used to make a free falling fruit pie.
- 1:48Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: Mmm, sounds deliciously intriguing.
- 1:51Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: She'd go on a quest deep into the woods.
- 1:55Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: A quest, you say?
- 1:57Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: She would seek out the shiniest, most delectable looking gold fruit that had fallen from the tallest and most ancient of trees.
- 2:05Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: The stuff of legends.
- 2:07Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: Go on.
- 2:08Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: Then she would take her hand woven basket made from the grasses of a mystical field, and she would collect the fruit, and then she had to find a radiant sword that she had to pull out of the trunk of a tree.
- 2:22Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: Uh well and when she succeeded, she was named Frida, the Fruit Forged, Knight of the Realms.
- 2:31Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: Uh why, no, actually.
- 2:34Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: She would just return home and cook all the fruit up with her favorite spices.
- 2:40Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: Oh.
- 2:41Jolly Holly Hedgehog Clip: That's pretty awesome, too.
- 2:44Redge: And that brings me to my second favorite tree, Frances, the ancient golden apple tree.
- 2:50Redge: There's something rather special about that tree.
- 2:54Redge: It has stood through countless seasons in Once Upon a Time, weathered all sorts of storms, and provided fruit for generations.
- 3:04Jonathan: And it's still where you get apples for your family's favorite pie.
- 3:08Redge: Indeed.
- 3:08Redge: Thank you for that wonderful question, Frances.
- 3:11Redge: And if you happen to bake an apple pie this season, we hope it's a good one.
- 3:17Jonathan: Nina sent us a voicemail because she had something important to tell me.
- 3:23Nina: Jonathan, you can't stop Redge ignoring you.
- 3:28Nina: He might be just scared or something.
- 3:32Jonathan: Thank you so much for that message, Nina.
- 3:34Jonathan: I could tell you are feeling pretty upset with me.
- 3:38Redge: Oh dear.
- 3:39Jonathan: You're right that sometimes when someone ignores you, there might be more going on than you realize.
- 3:44Jonathan: Maybe they're worried, nervous, or scared.
- 3:47Jonathan: It's important to be kind and patient and try to understand how someone else might be feeling.
- 3:53Redge: Well, I do sometimes need a little time to gather my thoughts, and occasionally I get distracted by a particularly interesting leaf.
- 4:02Jonathan: Occasionally?
- 4:04Redge: Okay, frequently.
- 4:05Redge: But I do know that you care about me, Jonathan.
- 4:09Jonathan: And I really do, Redge.
- 4:10Jonathan: You're my best hedgehog buddy, and I adore you.
- 4:14Jonathan: And Nina, thank you for reminding me to be patient and give my friend a little understanding.
- 4:20Redge: Oh Nina, if I had a heart shaped cookie right now, I would offer you the very first bite.
- 4:26Jonathan: Oh that's a big deal coming from you, Redge.
- 4:30Redge: Our next question comes from Ember, who wants to know what our favorite thing in the forest is.
- 4:36Jonathan: Ooh, that's a tough one.
- 4:38Jonathan: There are so many wonderful things in the Folktale Forest.
- 4:41Redge: The towering trees, the sparkling streams, Granny's Diner.
- 4:46Jonathan: Those are all lovely, Redge, but I think my favorite thing is the critters and creatures who live here.
- 4:53Redge: Ah yes, Big Bad, Tinkerbell, the Branch Sisters, Sherlock and Wabbitson, Glimmer.
- 5:00Jonathan: Every creature brings something different to the forest.
- 5:02Jonathan: Some are great storytellers, some are brilliant builders, some make beautiful music while others solve mysteries.
- 5:09Redge: That's right.
- 5:10Redge: Every creature matters, and the forest wouldn't be the same without them.
- 5:14Jonathan: Exactly.
- 5:15Jonathan: We don't all have to be alike to belong.
- 5:17Jonathan: Our differences are part of what makes our community special.
- 5:21Redge: Ember, you've reminded us of one of the most important things about our forest.
- 5:27Redge: There's room for everyone among our trees.
- 5:30Jonathan: And we're glad you're part of our Dorktales community too.
- 5:34Jonathan: Now Henry sent in a question specifically for Redge.
- 5:36Jonathan: He even signed his message, Sir Henry F at your service.
- 5:41Redge: Hmm, a most distinguished introduction.
- 5:44Redge: And his question is, what is your favorite quill?
- 5:48Redge: You can only choose one.
- 5:50Jonathan: Henry, when we emailed you back, Redge promised he would give it a good think and answer you in this hotline.
- 5:56Jonathan: So, Redge, have you made your decision?
- 5:59Redge: I have, Jonathan.
- 6:00Redge: I have considered the matter from every conceivable angle.
- 6:05Redge: I consulted my journal, studied my reflection, and even attempted to count every quill on my back.
- 6:12Jonathan: So which one did you choose?
- 6:14Redge: My favorite quill is number nine hundred and thirty five, which I rescued after I shed it, and asked the craftsman and toy maker Geppetto to make it into a writing instrument for me.
- 6:28Jonathan: Wait, you made a quill pen out of your nine hundred and thirty fifth quill?
- 6:34Redge: Precisely.
- 6:34Redge: I'm using it to compose my plays and prose, hoping one day to measure up to the writing of Quilliam Shakespeare, the most revered hedgehog bard in history.
- 6:46Jonathan: Henry, thank you for such a clever question.
- 6:48Jonathan: And Redge, I can see how choosing one's favorite quill is a lot like choosing a favorite friend.
- 6:54Redge: Impossible, though I do hope Sir Henry approves of my selection.
- 6:59Jonathan: Our next question comes from Tristan in Missouri, who asks, What is Redge's favorite color?
- 7:05Redge: Well, Tristan, I dropped a hint in our latest episode, Jack and the Golden Ladder.
- 7:11Jonathan: You can also spot your favorite color in that episode's illustration.
- 7:14Redge: Ah yes, I was wearing my favorite cashmere scarf.
- 7:19Redge: So soft, warm, and a most brilliant shade of green.
- 7:25Redge: My favorite color is green.
- 7:28Jonathan: There it is, the color of lush forest leaves, fresh spring grass, and of course, found in a certain hedgehog's very fashionable wardrobe.
- 7:39Redge: A little green never goes out of style.
- 7:41Redge: Thank you, Tristan, for asking.
- 7:44Jonathan: Hey Redge, you know what I love about the questions and messages we receive?
- 7:48Jonathan: They often lead us to stories we might never have discovered on our own.
- 7:52Redge: Indeed, our listeners are a rather brilliant bunch.

- 8:17Jonathan: Vera and family, thank you for sharing that connection with us.
- 8:20Jonathan: That's something we love about all of you.
- 8:23Jonathan: Your questions, ideas, suggestions, and stories inspire us.
- 8:27Jonathan: Sometimes you even help us discover the next story we tell.
- 8:31Redge: Speaking of listener inspiration, we have to give a big thank you to Grant, one of our longtime listeners from San Francisco.
- 8:39Jonathan: Hey, I got to meet Grant in person when he came to see me perform a live Dorktales story at the Kids Podcast Festival at the Reading Bug in San Carlos, California.
- 8:50Redge: Oh, how wonderful!
- 8:51Jonathan: Grant gave us the idea for our 100th episode, The Radiant Root, inspired by the Russian fairy tale, The Giant Turnip.
- 8:59Redge: And now we're up to 140 episodes.
- 9:03Redge: That's a whole lot of adventures, a whole lot of characters, and a whole lot of opportunities for Jonathan to make strange voices.
- 9:13Jonathan: Hey, those voices take practice.
- 9:15Redge: And I appreciate every single one of them.
- 9:19Redge: And now, a special shout out to Ada and her family.
