- 0:00Speaker 1: It's time to meet the Kruken with Mike Minton goa
- 0:03Speaker 1: Tocord back and there for another NHL season joining us.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Thank you very much for a few moments for you
- 0:08Speaker 1: to see you once again, my friend. First off, I'll
- 0:10Speaker 1: start as a goalie entering your third full season here.
- 0:13Speaker 1: How does your focus shift from five years ago to
- 0:17Speaker 1: now since you're in the NHL now full time?
- 0:20Speaker 2: Well, trucifully, it changes. Every year. You re reassess and
- 0:25Speaker 2: kind of decide where you're at, where the game's at,
- 0:29Speaker 2: what you need to do to best help the team,
- 0:31Speaker 2: and go into each season with that new set of
- 0:34Speaker 2: goals and structure that you want to implement to best
- 0:38Speaker 2: help the team win games. At the end of the day,
- 0:40Speaker 2: we're all individuals here trying to help the team win
- 0:42Speaker 2: and come together as a group. So it changes from
- 0:45Speaker 2: your to ear.
- 0:45Speaker 1: So putting this into context, this is a pretty normal question.
- 0:48Speaker 1: When you're asked us to say age twenty or when
- 0:50Speaker 1: someone enters adulthood and you're now twenty nine, when's the
- 0:53Speaker 1: last time someone asked you what do you want to
- 0:55Speaker 1: be in five to ten years from now? And how
- 0:58Speaker 1: much have you thought about that? Maybe?
- 1:00Speaker 2: Well, I feel old all of a sudden, I apologize, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:05Speaker 2: I haven't. I haven't put a lot of thought. I
- 1:08Speaker 2: try not to look too too far ahead like that
- 1:10Speaker 2: because for me, I'm a very process and structure oriented person.
- 1:14Speaker 2: So it's like, okay, you know, especially if you're looking
- 1:16Speaker 2: at hockey season, it's like, I'm looking at the next
- 1:19Speaker 2: game and what I need to do to prepare for
- 1:20Speaker 2: the next game to be at my best and help
- 1:22Speaker 2: the team win. And I think it's much easier to
- 1:27Speaker 2: move forward that way and to keep getting one percent
- 1:30Speaker 2: better and just keep progressing that way as opposed to
- 1:33Speaker 2: being like, well, in five years, I want to be
- 1:34Speaker 2: this now. It's also, I think beneficial sometimes to look
- 1:37Speaker 2: at it in a backwards perspective and say, Okay, in
- 1:40Speaker 2: five years, I want to be here, and Okay, what
- 1:43Speaker 2: do I need to do on day one of you know,
- 1:47Speaker 2: fifteen hundred plus days to get to where I want
- 1:50Speaker 2: to be in year five? So that's not also, you know,
- 1:53Speaker 2: a bad way to go boy, right? As well?
- 1:54Speaker 1: Training takes up a lot of your time during the summer.
- 1:57Speaker 1: What else were you able to enjoy when you were
- 1:58Speaker 1: back home in Boston?
- 2:00Speaker 2: Really, I just sit on the couch and uh, watch
- 2:02Speaker 2: it not kidding. I love yeah, yeah, I love doing
- 2:07Speaker 2: stuff for me Like I put my work in, I
- 2:10Speaker 2: get what I need to in from a training standpoint,
- 2:13Speaker 2: but we get a couple of months a year where
- 2:15Speaker 2: we were on our own schedule. And I love to travel.
- 2:17Speaker 2: I love to see the world. I love to do
- 2:18Speaker 2: fun things. So you know, I love going to Europe.
- 2:22Speaker 2: This summer I went to Europe a couple of times,
- 2:23Speaker 2: fortunate enough to obviously play for a team USA and
- 2:25Speaker 2: World Championships, which was also a bit of a European
- 2:29Speaker 2: excursion as well. And then and then traveled around a
- 2:31Speaker 2: little bit after over to Italy and Switzerland, spent time
- 2:34Speaker 2: with my Swiss family. And then I love going to
- 2:37Speaker 2: the lake. I love I love wakesurfing, going to the beach,
- 2:41Speaker 2: hanging out with friends and family. You know, I went
- 2:44Speaker 2: my brother. We went to New York City and watched
- 2:47Speaker 2: our favorite soccer team, Manchester United play in the preseason
- 2:50Speaker 2: summer tour from the Premier League. So that was really cool. Yeah,
- 2:53Speaker 2: just lots of fun stuff. And then that way, I'm
- 2:57Speaker 2: I'm reset and recharged once once the sea rolls around.
- 3:00Speaker 1: Congratulations, by the way, on the gold medal.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Thank you to media. Yeah, it was hard to put
- 3:06Speaker 2: into words. I mean, just the whole experience, going from
- 3:10Speaker 2: playing or sorry, just getting invited to play for TMOSA.
- 3:14Speaker 2: I've never had that honor before, and putting on the
- 3:17Speaker 2: jersey for the first time, the red, white, and blue
- 3:19Speaker 2: was hard. Hard to describe that feeling and just meant
- 3:24Speaker 2: the world to me and my family and to get
- 3:25Speaker 2: that opportunity, I couldn't have been more grateful. And now
- 3:28Speaker 2: you look at you know, actually playing and playing the
- 3:32Speaker 2: games and then winning the tournament was a dream come true.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And I'm going to have that gold medal for the
- 3:37Speaker 2: rest of my life. So pretty incredible experience.
- 3:40Speaker 1: The third jersey is looking pretty good, but to you,
- 3:42Speaker 1: how good is it?
- 3:43Speaker 2: It's sick. Yeah. I'm a huge fan for more than
- 3:46Speaker 2: one reason, and the biggest reason being it's it's nasty,
- 3:49Speaker 2: like it looks unreal. Second reason being as a goalie.
- 3:52Speaker 2: Now I get to design gear for it and a
- 3:54Speaker 2: mask and pads and et cetera. Sticks so I'm I'm juiced.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I can't wait for everyone to see. I mean, I
- 4:00Speaker 2: put out my mask already, so that got some positive reaction,
- 4:03Speaker 2: but I can't wait for the rest of the year.
- 4:06Speaker 1: To come out for everyone to say, take me through
- 4:08Speaker 1: the mask, the design and what kind of concept that
- 4:11Speaker 1: that you wanted to conceive from the get go.
- 4:14Speaker 2: I so I work very closely with my mass painter, Shifty.
- 4:17Speaker 2: He does an incredible job, and he and I usually
- 4:21Speaker 2: have like a sit down and we decid what we
- 4:22Speaker 2: want to do. I mean, obviously we wanted to do
- 4:24Speaker 2: glow in the dark paint right away, and he kind
- 4:27Speaker 2: of came to me with the idea of the eyes
- 4:28Speaker 2: on the side and then some crack and logos and
- 4:31Speaker 2: I loved it. And I think I think with mass painters,
- 4:34Speaker 2: especially like their artists. So if they see a vision,
- 4:37Speaker 2: if he sees some vision and he's like, it's gonna
- 4:38Speaker 2: be sick, I'm like, cool, do it.
- 4:40Speaker 1: You know.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I'm never like a I need you to do it
- 4:43Speaker 2: black and white like this, because then usually they feel
- 4:46Speaker 2: like they're restricted into, you know, a confined boundary, and
- 4:50Speaker 2: then that's it's hard for their creativity to come out
- 4:52Speaker 2: that way. So with masks, I usually just let him
- 4:54Speaker 2: run with it.
- 4:55Speaker 1: We talked a little bit about routine. Also, there is
- 4:57Speaker 1: the concept of what you put into your body, but
- 4:59Speaker 1: also sleep how important is it and how much are
- 5:02Speaker 1: you getting on an average per night.
- 5:04Speaker 2: Well, sleep is probably the number one form of recovery
- 5:08Speaker 2: that you can get. I mean probably neck and neck
- 5:11Speaker 2: with with nutrition obviously. For me, I my sleep needs
- 5:16Speaker 2: depend every single night. I wear a whoop so I
- 5:19Speaker 2: track my my sleep from the night before. That gives
- 5:22Speaker 2: me a baseline for what I need the next night,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and then usually depending on how difficult my day is,
- 5:27Speaker 2: how good my sleep was the night before, that determines
- 5:29Speaker 2: how much I need the next night. I would say
- 5:31Speaker 2: after a game, I typically need about nine nine to
- 5:35Speaker 2: nine and a half hours of sleep to get full recovery. Now,
- 5:38Speaker 2: after a game, when we're going to bed super late,
- 5:40Speaker 2: it's it's hard to get that. So a lot of
- 5:43Speaker 2: naps and then focusing on the next night, trying to
- 5:45Speaker 2: get a really good night's sleep.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Important sleep for important nights certainly ahead and there's more
- 5:49Speaker 1: of them. Joey, appreciate your time. Thanks, thanks for that much.
