- 0:16Welcome to PCR Sports. Good evening, I'm Dipam, and
- 0:20welcome to the PCR Sport Show this week.
- 0:23It's the start of your sporting weekend and it's the start of a
- 0:26gloriously warm and hot summer weekend as well.
- 0:29Lots going on in our city and we'll be speaking to two of the
- 0:34parties that are involved in some great events that are
- 0:36taking place this weekend. We'll be speaking with Georgina
- 0:39Parrott, Rhys Hills and Hannah Johnson who are organising the
- 0:43Women's Aid charity football match this weekend.
- 0:46It's the third year they've been running it and every year it's
- 0:48got bigger and better, so we'll be speaking to them later in the
- 0:52show. But we kick off first speaking
- 0:54to Alicia, who's The Who is the director at the new New Wave
- 0:58Events Company who are paramount to organising the Dragon Boat
- 1:04Festival that's taking place in the city again tomorrow as well.
- 1:07Alicia, good evening. Hello.
- 1:10How are you good? Thank you.
- 1:11Thanks for having. Me no pleasure.
- 1:13Thanks for joining us and good to have you talking to us this
- 1:17evening. And it's a it's a massive,
- 1:19massive event that takes place every year in the city.
- 1:22And it's a milestone event as well, isn't it?
- 1:25Yes, it's a 2013 this year, so I'd be comfortable for us.
- 1:28So lots, lots to kind of be proud of and obviously you work
- 1:33with an organization called New Wave Events who are kind of key
- 1:37to organising the event. So tell us a little bit about
- 1:39New Wave and and your role at it.
- 1:42Yeah. So I'm one of the directors of
- 1:44New Wave events. We specialized in dragon boat
- 1:46racing, but we also. They should.
- 1:51You're, you're fading out a little bit, Alicia.
- 1:52Then if you can get a better signal in the area, is that
- 1:54right? Oh yeah, so we had one of the
- 1:59one, one of the directors at New York events and we do lots of
- 2:02charity and corporate dragon boat racing and lots of other
- 2:05team building events. But yeah, organising dragon boat
- 2:08festival happening. Excellent.
- 2:10And you're, you're fairly local to Peterborough as an
- 2:12organization as well, aren't you?
- 2:13Yes, yeah, not at all. Brilliant, brilliant.
- 2:16And obviously the event this year, so they say it's the 25th
- 2:19event that the city has held. So it's a it's a long standing
- 2:22event in the calendar every year and you know, this year's no
- 2:25different and it looks to be a a massive event this year and and
- 2:29glorious weather as well, which is which is awesome.
- 2:32Yeah, we're going to have five boat racing so it's definitely
- 2:38going to be bigger, but there's got to be more the water, the
- 2:42water and we've got to be catering and charity and
- 2:46sponsors on the day across 20 daytime.
- 2:49Fantastic and and dragon boat racing itself give us a little
- 2:52bit more information about how dragon boat racing works and why
- 2:55it's so popular. Yeah.
- 2:58So that's basically it's very good to get a lot of corporate
- 3:01groups that for a great day out with family and colleagues and
- 3:06you basically have the paddlers and the and the roads on the
- 3:14back, so you go straight. So yeah, basically you have to
- 3:18paddle with the beat as fast as you can.
- 3:22Brilliant. So for those amount, because it
- 3:24broke a little bit, but to kind of recap this year, there's
- 3:27there's multiple people in long boats that race up and down the
- 3:29lake and basically paddle as fast as you can and, and and get
- 3:33to the end and, and win. Hopefully that's yeah, it's kind
- 3:36of like canoeing, but a bit like the the Oxford Cambridge Boat
- 3:40Race, but in in a fancier boat, isn't it?
- 3:42Yeah, so we've got dragon heads and tags, so the odds look very
- 3:46colourful on the water. Fantastic, good stuff.
- 3:48And the event? For those that don't know, where
- 3:51does the event take place in the city?
- 3:53It's peaking Bowling Lake, so not very far.
- 3:56It's quite local and we can get to them.
- 4:00Yeah, we tend to get quite a lot of expectations on Monday, but
- 4:04yeah, it's going to be a great hot day tomorrow, so hopefully
- 4:06it'll be a great. Brilliant.
- 4:08And what's the timings? When when, when can people turn
- 4:10up and when how long does the event to go on for?
- 4:13So the start of the day is first races at 10 AM and then the
- 4:17presentation is at 4:00 PM So and we also have a drive back up
- 4:22in the room 1, I believe if you want to see an airplane in the
- 4:27sky, have a look. Fantastic.
- 4:29And it's obviously nearly a full day event which so people can
- 4:31kind of dip in and out I suppose, or even come for the
- 4:34whole event, whatever takes their fans.
- 4:36Yeah, we have quite a lot of people who have found this out
- 4:38particularly and, you know, enjoy the racing throughout the
- 4:40day and music and commentary and yeah, just spend the day at the
- 4:44running day. Brilliant.
- 4:45And in terms of other attractions at the event, stalls
- 4:50or or other kind of features of the event, what what takes
- 4:53place? Yeah, so we will have a fun time
- 4:56for the children and and then you'll have, if you fancy some
- 5:00food, we'll have a caricature who will basically draw up
- 5:04something fancy for you and then want to add charity support as
- 5:09well with plenty of competitions happening.
- 5:12Brilliant, that's good. And that's all sounds fun and
- 5:13fantastic, but overall it's for a fantastic cause, isn't it?
- 5:17Because it's, it's a, it's a, it's for a 'cause that's local
- 5:21to the charity and, and the heart in the heart of the city,
- 5:23not far from the actual boating lake itself.
- 5:25Yes, basically, right. The football Hospice is
- 5:27literally from the Springlets Drive from the rowing Lakes.
- 5:31So yeah, very local charity that everyone loves and supports
- 5:34every year. So we tend to make quite a lot
- 5:36of money every year for them. Brilliant.
- 5:38And that's a well worthy charity and a well known sort of care
- 5:42home in the city, isn't it? That it has helped many, many
- 5:45people. Yes, definitely.
- 5:48It does a lot of great work and we are proud to support it.
- 5:51And, you know, and they've been a partner for several years now.
- 5:55And yeah, we're very happy to be continuing to work with them to
- 5:58help them as much as we can. Fantastic and shout out to other
- 6:01kind of partners and sponsors that you have as well.
- 6:04Yeah. So we've got Castle as our
- 6:06sponsor this year. So they're the first time this
- 6:09year. But yeah, they've been fantastic
- 6:11in lead up to the event and I'm sure they'll do a great job on
- 6:13the day and promoting the event and obviously supporting.
- 6:19And then we also have ESP Magazine and you guys who also
- 6:24supported us throughout the year.
- 6:26So it's very beautiful. Good.
- 6:28And we're proud to be partner this year and hopefully we can
- 6:30support you again next year as well.
- 6:32And it's been fun obviously working with you.
- 6:35In terms of the participants this year, how many teams are
- 6:40you hoping that will be partaking tomorrow?
- 6:43Yes, it requires that 40 teams have been participating.
- 6:47Yeah, tomorrow. So there can't be an event for
- 6:50us. Yeah, plenty of going on, plenty
- 6:53of stuff going on and. Brilliant.
- 6:57That's good stuff. And and I guess one, once a team
- 6:59ends, because teams can be entered either it could be a
- 7:01group of friends, it could be a company that you know, there's a
- 7:04corporate boat. So there's no kind of
- 7:07limitations to who can enter, is there?
- 7:09We've had some family said that was charity or we have, you
- 7:13know, corporate groups that want to have a Sunday out.
- 7:17Yeah, anyone is welcome to enter a team.
- 7:19Fantastic. So watch out for next year.
- 7:21When do you start promoting the next year's event so people can
- 7:24watch out for it? We.
- 7:25We sent our event even December and it's quite a popular event
- 7:29that sells out pretty much every year.
- 7:31So yeah, we we've got more entries available next year.
- 7:35Hopefully we can grow it bigger and bigger.
- 7:36Excellent. I'm sure we'll give a shout out
- 7:38to it on this station or on this show when you when you open up
- 7:41the applications again later this year.
- 7:44So, but once again, just as a reminder, tomorrow's event
- 7:48timings and locations please, Alicia.
- 7:51Yes, so you're 3:50 PM at Peterborough Rowing Lake.
- 7:55Come and join us. Bring plenty of water and sun
- 7:57cream. Who have a barrel size of those
- 7:59fancy drinks and plenty of kitchen sauce if you fancy food.
- 8:03Yeah, enjoy. Fantastic.
- 8:05And once again, it's for an absolutely fantastic 'cause that
- 8:08you're doing this for and just again, give us a quick update on
- 8:11that. So it's an aid of throwing a
- 8:13football Hospice and the event raises in around them 35,000
- 8:18each year or even over. So yeah was there approach that
- 8:21and we've got supporters and sponsor Castle Lodge and you
- 8:25guys don't need to see magazine as their media partners.
- 8:27So fantastic. Lots of, you know, organization
- 8:31supporting the event and. Wonderful.
- 8:34It's great to hear that it's going to be a big event tomorrow
- 8:37and it's going to raise a size of amount of money as always,
- 8:40and wishing you all the best with that.
- 8:43I'm sure it'd be a fantastic event for anyone who goes along.
- 8:45So get along to the event, support it.
- 8:47Just have a good day out, a Family Day out actually, and
- 8:49lots going on for kids as well as as adults.
- 8:51So and the weather will be fantastic.
- 8:53So there's there's no reason not to to attend and it'd be like a
- 8:57a small regatta really, won't it?
- 9:03I think Alicia's broken up there.
- 9:04So Alicia, if you can just thank you very much for joining us
- 9:07this evening and wishing you all the best for the event tomorrow.
- 9:10And we'll speak to you soon. Take care.
- 9:12Thank. You very much.
- 9:14Bye. That was Alicia from New Wave
- 9:18Events we could just about hear. I think we got the message of
- 9:20what she was saying. So the Dragon Boat Festival
- 9:23taking place tomorrow at the Boating Lake in the heart of
- 9:26Peterborough and get along there from 10:00 in the morning till
- 9:30around 4:00 in the afternoon series of races for the people
- 9:34who've entered in the boat entered a boat into the
- 9:36competition and there's lots to do aside from that attempt for
- 9:40kids activities, other stores and features.
- 9:42You can get food drink there. So make a complete day out and
- 9:45it's a worthwhile cause raising money for the Sue Rider Thorpool
- 9:49Hospice, which is obviously close to to the venue and has
- 9:54been a long standing care home in the heart of the city.
- 9:57So that's the Dragon Boat Festival tomorrow right back
- 10:01into the studio and we'll be speaking to Georgina Rees and
- 10:04Hannah in a moment to running another charity event tomorrow,
- 10:07the 3rd year running, it's the Women's Aid charity football

- 12:32You're listening to PCR sports. Good evening and welcome back to
- 12:45the PCR Sport Show with myself, Dipam.
- 12:47This evening we're just speaking to Alicia just before the break,
- 12:50who is part of the New Wave event organization running the
- 12:54Dragon Boats Festival taking place in Peterborough tomorrow
- 12:58during the day from 3:50 at the Boating Lake in Peterborough.
- 13:01So get yourself along there and support that event because
- 13:05they're, they are raising money for charity for the Sue Ryder
- 13:09Hospice, right? Another charity event is taking
- 13:12place tomorrow as well, which is fantastic to hear about all
- 13:14these good causes for local the local people are doing for for
- 13:18local charities. We're in the accompaniment of
- 13:20Georgina Reese and Hannah who are from the Women's Women's Aid
- 13:25charity football match organization committee.
- 13:27Welcome guys to the show. Hello, Hello.
- 13:30Good to have you back you you were on the show last year.
- 13:33It was the second football match that you did last year and now
- 13:36on to the third one. So clearly you're not giving up,
- 13:38which is great for the charity and great for the city of
- 13:41Peterborough. So, Georgian, tell us a bit
- 13:44about the history of, of, of, of this event.
- 13:46Yeah, of course. So initially it all started from
- 13:50a silly little idea of mine, which I swiftly passed over to
- 13:54Hannah who was fully on board. So we decided to go full force
- 14:00ahead and we created our first. Well, we hosted our first match
- 14:06at Neverton, which was a success to us because we've never done
- 14:09it before. However, we knew we could
- 14:12obviously make it even better. So last year we moved over to
- 14:18Whittlesea and then yeah, this year we're having it at
- 14:22Peterborough Rugby Club. So we've built on it every year.
- 14:25We're hoping this year will be even bigger than last.
- 14:28But yeah, all to raise money for such an important charity within
- 14:32Peterborough. Fantastic.
- 14:33So tell us a bit about the charity.
- 14:35Actually it's the Women's Aid Peterborough branch or however
- 14:39you would describe it. But it's a local charity that
- 14:42helps local women, obviously. Yeah, it does.
- 14:44So in Heaterboro Women's Aid, the work that they do is
- 14:49absolutely vital. So they've actually seen an
- 14:51increase of 25% in referrals. So they're more reliant on than
- 14:57ever on donations and fundraising to keep to keep
- 15:01supporting those that need them really.
- 15:02So a really vital charity that is definitely used in our in our
- 15:08community and, and what sort of support does it provide for
- 15:12women? What?
- 15:13What when you say referrals, tell us a bit more about that.
- 15:15So it's a special response service to domestic abuse and
- 15:20violence against women and children, and it empowers the
- 15:23victims to be in control of their own future.
- 15:25So that's specifically what they do, but they do so much more.
- 15:28They have groups, they do little outreach projects, but we can
- 15:32tell you more about that as we go on, can't we?
- 15:33So it obviously helps win to, to, to kind of be pulled away
- 15:36from dangerous situations, doesn't it effectively?
- 15:38Yeah, that's right. They have like a essentially A
- 15:41refuge where the women can go and obviously be safe if they're
- 15:46fleeing domestic violence or, or whatever issues that could be.
- 15:52So it's like a safe haven for them.
- 15:54So, yeah, as you said, they've seen a 25% increase in
- 15:59referrals, which means that they're relying on, you know,
- 16:05fundraisers such as us for things like quilts, pillows,
- 16:10duvets, things like that, general things that they can use
- 16:15down at the refuge. And yeah, so the refuge is
- 16:19obviously is to give shelter to women who are escaping at a
- 16:22potentially bad or a bad or a potentially bad situation.
- 16:24And therefore you need facilities, equipment, come home
- 16:28comforts for the for the refuge to to, to help the people who go
- 16:32there. Absolutely.
- 16:33Yeah. Fantastic.
- 16:34And why, why this charity, if you don't mind me asking?
- 16:38So it's a charity that's close to all of our hearts, really.
- 16:43Yeah. It's, it's such an important
- 16:45charity that means a lot to a lot of people within
- 16:48Peterborough and outside of Peter.
- 16:49People that have come in from other, you know, counties that
- 16:54have fled that, I feel like they are underfunded.
- 16:59So it needs people like us to really pump the fundraising up
- 17:04to make sure we're making as much money as possible for such
- 17:07an important charity and just giving back a little bit,
- 17:11really. So yeah, that's why, yeah, it's
- 17:13brilliant, brilliant. And so people who live in other
- 17:17cities or other counties can sometimes obviously escape that
- 17:20situation but then gain refuge in in Peterborough and therefore
- 17:23the Peterborough charity would obviously support them.
- 17:24Exactly. Yeah, that's correct.
- 17:26Yeah. So Peterborough was able to then
- 17:29support them with anything like essentials they need, you know,
- 17:33to housing and things like that. That's actually what our money
- 17:37went to last year. So they helped two women flee
- 17:42and they provided them with white goods, a safe place to
- 17:45live, pots and pans, all the basic essential things that they
- 17:47needed to to kind of be successful in in their next
- 17:50move. Amazing, fantastic.
- 17:52And just I was keeping with the charity for a moment and, and,
- 17:55and the refuge. So have you, have you visited
- 17:56the refuge yourself? Have you seen around it or have
- 17:58you been described what it's like or anything like that?
- 18:01Do you know the sort of features there or?
- 18:04No, we actually haven't been to look around, which actually is
- 18:06something that we probably should do and could do.
- 18:08Seeing how your money's being spent are your agents.
- 18:10Yeah, we do. We have, we have a good line of
- 18:12communication with them and they let us know where the money's
- 18:14being. Yeah, which is good.
- 18:15Which is really nice because last year it went towards
- 18:17Christmas, didn't it? And the children.
- 18:20We got pictures of of that and obviously they they got gifts
- 18:23and things with the donations that we raised, which was really
- 18:28nice. But they do other things as
- 18:30well, so it's not just that pit. So I obviously I got an e-mail
- 18:34from them and they kind of said to us about how they're
- 18:37currently supporting 49 women and children through their
- 18:39specialist service for South Asian victims, the Dahlia
- 18:42Project, and 19 families are receiving support through their
- 18:46Lithuanian project. And they've also got a new, new
- 18:53project that they've received over 300 referrals for and
- 18:56they're working with Cambridgeshire Victim and
- 18:58Witness Hub to support victims who have been reported domestic
- 19:01abuse to the police, which it's, it's all really powerful stuff.
- 19:05And it shows you how prominent, you know, domestic abuse is and
- 19:09the effort and the impact that that they they have in their
- 19:12lives. And as Georgina mentioned in in
- 19:14the in the stat, she was talking about their 25% increase in
- 19:17referrals, which obviously means it's unfortunately a growing,
- 19:21it's a growing problem, isn't it?
- 19:22Which is why they rely so much on fundraising stuff.
- 19:26So that's why we do what we do just to make AI mean we make a
- 19:28small dent, don't we? But we do we make a dent.
- 19:31But I think that's the thing with charity and fundraising, is
- 19:33that you know you. Sadly, none of us can solve the
- 19:36whole problem in one go, but your contribution makes a
- 19:38valuable difference to, to, to, to the overall cause, doesn't
- 19:41it? And it raises awareness as well.
- 19:43It's really important that, you know, people then are talking
- 19:46about Peterborough Women's Aid and they're getting to meet
- 19:48people from Peterborough Women's Aid because they come down to
- 19:50the event. And I think that's really
- 19:52important to show face and, and get get names to faces and
- 19:55things like that. And then it just creates
- 19:57conversation, and I think that's really powerful, too.
- 20:00Yeah, absolutely. So going back to the event
- 20:02itself, this is the third year you're running it, as I
- 20:04mentioned and you've raised some from some high sums, haven't
- 20:08you? And and it's gone beyond your
- 20:10own expectations I think from from previous conversations.
- 20:13So tell us about the, the history of, of the amounts that
- 20:16you've been raising and what you hope for for this year.
- 20:19Yep. So initially the first year I
- 20:22think we raised around £800, which to us was massive from
- 20:27never doing a charity event before to, you know, just making
- 20:32something out of two months that we thought, we thought that was
- 20:37amazing. However, last year we pushed it
- 20:39even further and we raised £2700.
- 20:44And then obviously we also had a whole lot of donations brought
- 20:47on the day, which we're also doing this year for people in
- 20:50the refuge to make use of. And this year we hope to push
- 20:54that even further. We haven't got a target.
- 20:58Anything better than nothing so. But the, the biggest thing I
- 21:04think we talked about like we obviously raising the money and
- 21:07stuff like that, but it's, it's about bringing people together
- 21:09and getting them to enjoy a day together.
- 21:11And, and I think so we, we hope to raise more, don't we?
- 21:15But, but at the same time, like we hope that everyone comes and
- 21:18has a really good day and learns a lot about PWA and, and what
- 21:21they do. And so it's, it's kind of about
- 21:24everything. So raising the money is really
- 21:25important, but at the same time it's also raising the awareness,
- 21:27which is just as important to us.
- 21:29Yeah, absolutely. So.
- 21:31And it could be that obviously then other people may make
- 21:33private donations outside of your event, which then again,
- 21:36the awareness then helps do things like that, doesn't it?
- 21:39Yeah. So which is amazing.
- 21:40They can also go and raise their own money if they want to as
- 21:42well. They're they're owed to other
- 21:44people doing donations. But if you don't know about a
- 21:46charity, you're not going to raise.
- 21:47Money for them, yeah. So people could, I don't know,
- 21:49in theory running the Great Great Eastern Run or the London
- 21:51Marathon or whatever and, and and and get sponsored and and
- 21:55raise money that way amongst other countless ways as well, as
- 21:58you mentioned, Hannah, so brilliant.
- 22:01So event taking place tomorrow. Tell us a little bit about the
- 22:04house, how's the organization going and what's the what's the
- 22:08shape of the event? I hopefully ready to go at this
- 22:11stage. Headless chickens.
- 22:15Go on. How's that?
- 22:15How's the journey been to this to this day so far?
- 22:18Who wants to take that question? Well, it has been quite a
- 22:21journey, Yeah. It's been a lot of work.
- 22:25Obviously we're all parents that here, we all work hard doing one
- 22:32thing or another and we've got busy lives.
- 22:35So yeah, it's been, it's been hard work, but we do it because
- 22:39we want to do it, which is the most important thing.
- 22:42So yeah. But we, we, we found a different
- 22:46venue this year. We needed something a bit bigger
- 22:50with more car parking because obviously we looked to expand
- 22:53it, didn't we? This year with with stalls and
- 22:55Peterborough Rugby Club, the one at Fengate, they kind of got on
- 23:00board with us and they have been fantastic.
- 23:03Really, really good, really helpful, really supportive.
- 23:06So that's been that's been really nice.
- 23:08So we're holding it there this year.
- 23:09So it's in Peterborough, whereas last year we were out of
- 23:11Peterborough slightly, weren't we?
- 23:13Yeah. So I think it's more accessible
- 23:15for people in Peterborough to to attend to.
- 23:17Absolutely. Yeah, it's great facility there
- 23:19because the Peterborough are you FCR friends of the show?
- 23:21They've been on a few times and we exactly what you said there.
- 23:24They're a great club, run really well and are right in the heart
- 23:27of the cities. And aren't they?
- 23:28So they're they're a big feature in this city.
- 23:30So it's great that they've teamed up with you to to allow
- 23:32you to use their facilities. And by all accounts, their
- 23:35facilities are are, are a very good standard as well.
- 23:38So which is which is right in centre of Peterborough as well.
- 23:41So, so in terms of the event organization, then how does this
- 23:45journey start? At what point in the year or or
- 23:48how long does it? Take to get an idea.
- 23:52I mean, this idea obviously is more than three years old now.
- 23:54So in some ways it's become a bit of a repeatable process,
- 23:57hasn't it? Yeah.
- 23:58So we start a few months before, don't we?
- 23:59Well, this year, I think it was after Christmas we started and
- 24:03we start speaking to players though throughout and we get
- 24:06messages from players to our Facebook page and then.
- 24:10So that's when it sort of starts and we we sort of go from there
- 24:13really. You take on the raffle pit and
- 24:15getting prizes, don't you? And I speak to players and we
- 24:18create group chats and then we have our own group chat with a
- 24:22list that's getting longer and longer and longer we get so we
- 24:25can take it off and stay organised.
- 24:27And that's kind of how it's done, isn't it?
- 24:28And we rely on the support of other people and local
- 24:31businesses and, and football players and non football
- 24:34players. So yeah, it's it's a bit of a
- 24:37process, but we're there now. Brilliant.
- 24:40And this year's event slightly later in the calendar from last
- 24:43year, is there a reason for that or is it, is it just because?
- 24:46We needed more time. OK, fair enough.
- 24:48Availability as well, isn't it for the club and everything.
- 24:51Else and the season went on longer, didn't it?
- 24:53The football season this year it seemed to go longer.
- 24:55So we, we obviously didn't want to do it while players were
- 24:58still playing matches on Sundays and do this on a Saturday
- 25:00because then you lose potential players.
- 25:03So yeah, we we pushed it a bit late for that reason.
- 25:05And then the club, we worked with them as well, didn't we?
- 25:07Yeah. Obviously, we're thinking our
- 25:09workload is going to increase because we are looking to expand
- 25:13and potentially do a kids tournament okay throughout the
- 25:16year as well. So we're looking to do 2 events
- 25:21instead of 1. So yeah, it'll just be about
- 25:23expanding so. Brilliant.
- 25:25I love it. It's the creative pieces of
- 25:27flooding, aren't they? Fantastic.
- 25:29Really good stuff, right? Let's take another short break
- 25:31there and we'll come back and speak to Georgina, Reese and
- 25:35Hannah a bit more about the event, the actual structure of
- 25:37the match and how they define players and how the what to
- 25:41expect on the day. So stay tuned.

- 28:06Sports. Welcome back to the PCR Sports
- 28:14Show with myself, Dipam. I'm in the company of Georgina,
- 28:18Reese and Hannah from the Women's Aid Charity Football
- 28:21Match Organization committee. Just been talking about the
- 28:24charity itself and the, the great work they do as a women's
- 28:27refuge to get women out of dangerous situations and, and to
- 28:32protect their well-being and, and possibly their lives as
- 28:36well. So it's, it's a fantastic cause.
- 28:37And they have started doing an annual football match.
- 28:40So this is the third year it's running and tomorrow's the next
- 28:44one taking place at the Peterborough IUFC Stadium in
- 28:47Fengate. So on to the actual match
- 28:50itself. Starts at 2:00 PM Kick off.
- 28:54Is that kick off or the event itself?
- 28:56Kick off at 2:00 PM what what time kind of gates open what
- 29:00time can people can kind of start getting there and so.
- 29:03The gates open at 12:30. You will have to pay on the
- 29:07gate. It's cash only, £3 for adults, 1
- 29:10LB for under sixteens and then under twos are free.
- 29:14There will be someone there to guide you in the car parking so
- 29:17you know where you're going. There is a.
- 29:20The rugby club will kindly put on a BBQ so don't bring your own
- 29:23watermelons. As much as it's a hot day, the
- 29:27they've also got a bar with refreshments for everybody.
- 29:31The BBQ will be card only. The bar is cash and card.
- 29:34We've got stools going on, they'll be all set up and ready
- 29:37to go, but some of them will be a mix of cash and card.
- 29:40There's a bouncy castle which is a 5 LB wristband and you can
- 29:43just bounce as much as you like which is going to be lovely in
- 29:4532° heat. We'll have the raffle and then
- 29:51once the game finishes at about four, we're going to have the
- 29:55raffle, aren't we? And a couple of speeches that we
- 29:57normally have let people and the players peruse the stools and
- 30:02things like that. And then we'll sort of filter it
- 30:04off and and finish at six. Fantastic, so the BBQ is
- 30:07throughout the day? Was it post match or how it
- 30:09will? Be going throughout the day and
- 30:11they've obviously got a vegetarian option and stuff like
- 30:13that as well. So they've they've been really
- 30:14good, good with that in that respect.
- 30:17So the BBQ will be going throughout the event, the bar
- 30:19will be open the whole time. Amazing.
- 30:21There was, I think there's we've got a cake stall, we've got
- 30:23sweet stalls, we've got there's all sorts.
- 30:25So we just hope that everything lasts in heat.
- 30:28Fantastic. Sounds like a superb event and
- 30:30this is, you know, at least half the day, isn't it from from
- 30:32around just after lunchtime through to the evening.
- 30:35That's your afternoon taken care of and you'll be fed and watered
- 30:37and everything. So the.
- 30:38Kids will be exhausted. Absolutely.
- 30:40Bouncing on a castle, he's making a surprise appearance.
- 30:42Who's that? Louie, Louie, go on, explain
- 30:44more. Children's character.
- 30:46Obviously I've got a children's. I'm completely alien to this.
- 30:50Yeah, it's just a popular children's character, little
- 30:53little Australian character. So I think the children would be
- 30:55very happy on the day to see Bluey there.
- 30:58Superb. So it was an attraction for the
- 31:00kids as well. So on to the match itself, then
- 31:04you'll have obviously one team against another.
- 31:07How does that, how do you structure that and how does that
- 31:09work? How do you put it all together?
- 31:10What? How do you select teams,
- 31:11players, et cetera? So we go by, we have players
- 31:15message just that wants to play and then we reach out this year
- 31:18with it's really lovely to have players come back.
- 31:21We love that. But we also want to reach out
- 31:24and have like a really good mix of players every year and and
- 31:26variety and, and bringing other people in Cambridgeshire.
- 31:29So I went to a couple of managers from other teams this
- 31:33year and they gave us some players and asked their players
- 31:35who want to be involved. And we had so many messages,
- 31:38didn't we this year of people that wanted to play, not played
- 31:40before or played before, but they just wanted to play, didn't
- 31:43they? So we did actually have to to
- 31:46put out a cut out post, Didn't we cut out post because we just,
- 31:49we were still getting messages And then we sort of split up the
- 31:53players that we do know of, don't we?
- 31:55And equal them out a little bit and then we we wing the rest.
- 32:00That's all you can do on the day, charity.
- 32:02And everyone loves it and everyone has a good day and
- 32:03everyone gets some good minutes because.
- 32:05You're going to have fun as well.
- 32:06You can't make it too stuffy and loved last.
- 32:09Year, so we're hopeful that the same will happen again and it's
- 32:12just nice to see smiling faces and people enjoy the day.
- 32:15Excellent. And obviously you're you're all
- 32:16footballers yourselves. Will you partake yourself at
- 32:19some point or are you going to be doing the administration off
- 32:22the pitch? I think we're administration
- 32:26this year. Are we last?
- 32:28We've been above the last two years.
- 32:30But it's really difficult to to meet people, talk to people,
- 32:33enjoy the, you know, and answer people's questions.
- 32:36Plus play. I, I would like, I might, you
- 32:39know, make a cameo. You never know.
- 32:42But yeah, we'll, we'll be about this year to get to, to talk to
- 32:45people, won't we? Yeah.
- 32:48No, it's good, it's good. And so the players themselves,
- 32:51you said you reached out to to some clubs and, and obviously
- 32:53players have have then reached back out to you as well.
- 32:57What kind of clubs, what sort of level of players have you kind
- 33:00of attracted for for the event and what can people expect?
- 33:03Can you name drop or is it a surprise?
- 33:04A. Surprise, so we've got players
- 33:06from Tier 4, which is Posh level and not just Posh, we've got
- 33:11another player from that same level, right down to women who
- 33:14have never played football before.
- 33:16And so that's really nice, isn't it?
- 33:18I think your sister's obviously playing, isn't she?
- 33:20She plays for Posh me. And then we've got a couple of
- 33:23other Posh players and then we've got a player from Lincoln
- 33:27United, women's first team, King's Lynn.
- 33:31We've got players from King's Lynn, Neverton United,
- 33:36Whittlesey Athletic, the development side, yeah, so so
- 33:40lots of so. Players who are kind of often
- 33:41rivals and play against each other will be playing alongside
- 33:44each other. Yeah, Ruth comes all the way
- 33:45from Biggleswade. She plays for Biggleswade, but
- 33:47she's played for like Cambridge United and things like that.
- 33:50So she's come in and she travels every year to come.
- 33:52So that's really lovely. And she's actually one of our
- 33:54captains this year, isn't she? And then we've got Jenna, who's
- 33:57our ever captain and they're they're both players that have
- 33:59shown lots of support every year that they've come.
- 34:01And Jenna's often bought items and they're really good players,
- 34:04you know, to have on the pitch. So.
- 34:05So we made them captains this year.
- 34:07And it's, yeah, it's such a diverse teams this year.
- 34:10It's good though, isn't it? Because you want to keep that
- 34:12local interest obviously, but at the same time, like say, raising
- 34:15the awareness of the charity, you want to spread it a little
- 34:17bit more as well, which is, which is great.
- 34:18And it sounds like you're doing that.
- 34:19You're, you're going across out to the county, but you've
- 34:23maintained that local interest with, with Peter United players
- 34:25as well, which is, and we also have some players that are
- 34:28directly affected through domestic violence.
- 34:31So it's nice for them to get involved too and to feel like,
- 34:35like empowered by it almost. So, yeah, it's a really nice
- 34:39mix, like Hannah said, because that's the thing, isn't it?
- 34:42And, you know, in Donna delve in the details.
- 34:45But there'll be players there who have perhaps been in
- 34:48situations that this charity helps with, doesn't it?
- 34:51And I imagine there. So therefore they've got a real
- 34:53vested interest in it and and and a personal reason for doing
- 34:56it. Well, I think everyone, you
- 34:58know, will know someone, Yeah. You know, someone who's suffered
- 35:00domestic violence or been in an abusive relationship or, you
- 35:04know, no children that have experienced it.
- 35:06So I think it affects everybody in one way or another.
- 35:08Yeah. I agree.
- 35:09Brilliant, brilliant. So in terms of yeah, the match
- 35:14will take place kicking off like you say, at 2:00 PM, full match,
- 35:1845 minutes each way, 90 minute game, extra time penalties or
- 35:21anything like. That we won't be doing extra
- 35:23time penalties. Not in this heat, but it.
- 35:25Will be a full 90 minutes but with lots of water breaks.
- 35:28For the players, because. Obviously it's really hot and we
- 35:30have got 15 players for each team this year so it gives for
- 35:33lots of roll on roll offs. Yes, which is a good idea.
- 35:36And if it ends up five all, it ends up five all.
- 35:38There's no need to decide the matches.
- 35:40It's just a fun event, isn't it? Yeah, it's just, it's just for
- 35:43fun and we, we don't have a trophy.
- 35:45We did discuss getting a trophy, didn't we, for the winner and
- 35:47bragging rights, But we've decided to stay away from that.
- 35:50We do have medals though, don't we?
- 35:53Yeah, we do so for like to to acknowledge participation or is
- 35:56it is it winners one of the medals?
- 35:58Yeah, we've been kindly sponsored then by well one of
- 36:03our sponsors. So yeah luckily this year
- 36:06players will receive medals, which is a really nice match.
- 36:10Yeah, it's good because it, again, it's a memento for the
- 36:12player acknowledges their efforts to partake.
- 36:15They take something in a way which again, potentially raises
- 36:18a conversation and awareness in another way elsewhere, doesn't
- 36:21it? So it just starts doing that.
- 36:23So which is fantastic. So, OK, so tomorrow's event in
- 36:29terms of plans for the future, then what?
- 36:31What looks like you're going from strength to strength every
- 36:34year. So I guess you're not going to
- 36:37stop where you are. I guess you you clearly enjoy
- 36:41because you do it every year, you put on a great event and
- 36:44each year seems to get bigger and better and you raise more
- 36:45money every year as well. So what's what's the plan for a
- 36:48feature would you foresee in the next sort of few years?
- 36:52As I say, I think we'll be moving to 22 events a year, so
- 36:57obviously we'll be increasing from the one to the 2.
- 37:01So yeah, that would definitely give us something to look
- 37:04forward to in the future. And also, you know, if we can
- 37:09raise double the amount, that's that's even better, isn't it?
- 37:12So of. Course and also the Peterborough
- 37:15Rugby Club after speaking with Tina there, she's also said that
- 37:21well kindly said that like. From the foreseeable.
- 37:24From the foreseeable that it's basically our home, so all of
- 37:29our future events we can hopefully work really closely
- 37:32with Peterborough Rugby Club and potentially even do stuff like
- 37:36balls in the future that's been talked about.
- 37:39So yeah. We'll be doing another one of
- 37:41these next year. They won't because we got our
- 37:43shirts kindly sponsored this year.
- 37:45So last year we had shirts made, didn't we?
- 37:48And then the players took them. But this year we decided to go a
- 37:52bit different and we got sponsors.
- 37:54So we got Streamline, Streamline IT solutions and we're obviously
- 37:59Round Table and they've sponsored the shirts this year,
- 38:03so you'll see their logos and we've we're keeping those for
- 38:06two years, aren't we? Yeah.
- 38:07And then we also had our match balls sponsored by AD Sports
- 38:10Coaching. And he said that if we can get
- 38:13players to sign the balls, he's going to auction one off to
- 38:16raise us some more money. And he will kind of do that each
- 38:19year, which is lovely. So more and more sponsors and
- 38:21people are getting involved. So we can only but grow up.
- 38:23Yeah, I was to say just grow and and, and obviously we should
- 38:27mention about more than one event.
- 38:29So one will obviously be a game of this type.
- 38:31What, what what? What?
- 38:32Could be a second event or another event?
- 38:34So the second option we're looking into is a kids
- 38:37tournament. If Hannah will speak more on
- 38:41that, she knows more about the kids tournament.
- 38:44Why not get the kids involved? We give them for women and
- 38:47actually, you know, Women's Aid and and things like that empower
- 38:49children too. And you know, I think one of the
- 38:52things that. Could be better with.
- 38:53Football is making it more accessible for families on low
- 38:56incomes. That's always been a thing of
- 38:58mine. So actually to make it
- 38:59accessible for kids and for everyone who wants to get
- 39:01involved would be quite nice, wouldn't it?
- 39:03Yeah. Yeah, That's that's another
- 39:06another Ave. we'd like to go. Yeah.
- 39:07Go down. Amazing.
- 39:09I'm just going to throw something out there because I'm
- 39:10going to put you on the spot a little bit again.
- 39:12Now, if, like you say, you're getting inundated with players
- 39:16who want to play, is there a chance that you play two matches
- 39:19of this kind in one day? So you kick off at 1:00, finish
- 39:21by three, have a second match from 3:00 to 5:00 or something
- 39:24like that? Is that a potential?
- 39:25Oh, we turn it into some sort of tournament.
- 39:27Yeah, absolutely. 5A side. Four teams, yeah, yeah, who
- 39:31knows? Who knows where we'll end up,
- 39:33But yeah, there are lots of players and we've already got a
- 39:35wait list for next year, so we definitely have to keep going.
- 39:38With the growth, I think that's definitely something we could
- 39:41consider in the future as as long as we keep growing like we
- 39:45do, really I don't see an issue with that at all.
- 39:48We could definitely get the players together.
- 39:51We haven't had an issue this time so.
- 39:54And I think that's the main thing is it, it's about a people
- 39:56having fun on the day, playing the sport they love.
- 40:00But the main thing is obviously raising lots of money for the
- 40:02for the charity and, and long as you could do that in what,
- 40:04whatever shape or form. That's it.
- 40:06You know, you're ticking so many boxes.
- 40:08You, you go and get spectators. They would come in there to
- 40:10watch, support the event, have a BBQ, you have a drink.
- 40:13There'll be players who participate and we'll have their
- 40:15friends, family with them. They'll have fun.
- 40:16And that's it. People can walk away and think,
- 40:19yeah, I've had a really good afternoon.
- 40:20So yeah, I mean. Volunteers, haven't we?
- 40:21We've got fantastic. Volunteers we have, I mean for
- 40:24us as well, like we're me and Georgina are always looking for
- 40:27things to do. I'm sure it's Hannah, you know,
- 40:30she's got children. So yeah, it's, you know, there's
- 40:34not always loads of things to do around Peterborough.
- 40:37So definitely for children it's going to be one that you should
- 40:40definitely come to. It's going to be lovely weather.
- 40:43So it's, yeah, definitely one to look out for.
- 40:47Double bonus tomorrow, absolutely.
- 40:48With the weather, you can never guarantee the weather and
- 40:50tomorrow it's as guaranteed as it can be, which is great.
- 40:53So. And there will be photos because
- 40:55we have a photographer this year, Joe Richardson, who's
- 40:57kindly offered to, you know, give up his time.
- 40:59So we, we like having the photos, don't we?
- 41:01Because we can use them for next year And and people like to
- 41:03share them on social media, which again creates more
- 41:06awareness and more conversation. So fantastic, right?
- 41:09Let's just take a final break, then we'll be back with a wrap

- 43:21You're listening to PCR. Sports.
- 43:33Good evening and welcome back to the PCR Sports Show with myself,
- 43:36Dipam. And you missed a cracking show
- 43:38so far. If you've only just joined us
- 43:40and you can listen back on our website pcrfm.co.uk.
- 43:44Find listen back option, Listen again option and you can listen
- 43:47back to the show after 7:00 PM when it's uploaded.
- 43:49So we've been speaking about charity and how sports effects,
- 43:54charity and good causes in the city started the the show off
- 43:57with the Dragon Boat Festival. Now we're speaking with Georgina
- 44:00Rees and Hannah about the Women's Aid charity football
- 44:03match taking place tomorrow at Peterborough RUFC.
- 44:07So an event like this obviously takes effort.
- 44:10You mentioned there, Georgina, you start organizing probably
- 44:12around the start of the year, around Christmas.
- 44:15It takes a lot of effort. You, you know, like you say,
- 44:17everyone's busy. You, you, you we have jobs, we
- 44:19have families, we have kids. How important is it to get
- 44:23support from others and, and volunteers in, in, in, in this
- 44:25sort of setup that you, that you have?
- 44:27Yeah, Well, it's crucial really for us to be able to do what we
- 44:30do. There's only three of us.
- 44:33And I think it would be almost impossible without the help of
- 44:36others to get this show on the road.
- 44:39So, yeah, give a shout out to some people who, who, who who,
- 44:43who are kind of key supports for you and Reese personally.
- 44:46Our two little kids, Layla and Romeo, they just push us.
- 44:50And drivers have a little inspiration for you.
- 44:53Yeah, absolutely. Obviously our family, our
- 44:57immediate family, always supporting us.
- 45:01My dad will be on the mic speaking about the raffle and
- 45:05doing various speeches, etcetera.
- 45:08Yeah, I'm. Sadly not managing.
- 45:11Stepped down for managing this. Year for a while.
- 45:13For a while. Around sorting out raffle prizes
- 45:18and also sorting the raffle tickets for various people as
- 45:23well. My mum will be doing her own
- 45:25stall which adds to the day, alongside my daughter who will
- 45:28have her own little stall. Yeah, and obviously the likes of
- 45:33the rugby club. So they've they're letting us
- 45:36host the event there, which is more than we could ever ask,
- 45:40because that's the main thing that we need streamline IT
- 45:44solutions and Whittlesey round table.
- 45:46Without them, we won't be able to have the shirts and also all
- 45:50the stall holders that are also, you know, turning up on a day
- 45:55that's going to be really hot and, you know, just adding that
- 45:58extra element to our event. So there's lots more people that
- 46:02I could mention, but I don't want to bore people.
- 46:04OK. Cheers, Lino.
- 46:06Yeah. Absolutely.
- 46:07We also do need to throw a shirt out to our managers this year.
- 46:10So Dan, Dan Nola, who's doing it again for us, didn't he?
- 46:14And then Lee and Parrish, we've got who's managed me before
- 46:17doing it this year. But it literally takes a
- 46:19village, doesn't it? So we've got people, we've got
- 46:21people from our incredible sponsors who've sponsored the
- 46:23shirts right down to like my little boy Archie, who wants to
- 46:25hand out the medals and Layla who's having a stall.
- 46:28So it's literally brings everyone together.
- 46:30And we're so grateful. You know, Ramsey bouncers as
- 46:33well have been with us since the beginning, haven't they?
- 46:36And, and we're just so grateful for the support that they give
- 46:38and, and they want to help us every year.
- 46:40Ramsey bouncers are bouncy castles.
- 46:42They are not a security firm, no.
- 46:44Bouncy castles, although we might get that big, we might get
- 46:47that big where we need some of them.
- 46:50Just wanted to clarify that because I'm not sure your event
- 46:52doesn't get that rowdy, no. Hopefully not.
- 46:57In terms of your kind of personal stories in the sport, I
- 47:01know Georgina, you're from a family of of with a legacy in
- 47:05sport and football. Tell us a little bit about your
- 47:08kind of journey in sport and football and and, and why you do
- 47:11what you do today. Yeah, so obviously my sister
- 47:15plays football. She has done from a very young
- 47:19age. She made loads of friends
- 47:21through through it and I always, always for all that I think
- 47:25that's a bit of me. So yeah, mum and dad took me
- 47:29down for my first session and ever since I I didn't, I didn't
- 47:33ever want to leave except from obviously when I had kids.
- 47:36I sort of, I need my weekends now to spend with them and
- 47:39breathe. So yeah.
- 47:41But my family are huge football, massive football supporters.
- 47:46So yeah, we live and breathe football, really.
- 47:48And my daughter's just started playing for Posh as well.
- 47:52So brilliant. So that legacy is going to
- 47:54continue, isn't it? Hopefully, Hopefully so, yeah.
- 47:56And for those that I know, your sister Meg Lawler plays for, for
- 47:59Peter United. Yeah.
- 48:00And my brother-in-law, Dan Lawler, he plays for Spalding
- 48:04United. So yeah, it's definitely in, in
- 48:08our blood. Excellent.
- 48:09It's going to looks like it's going to continue with with your
- 48:11daughter as well, which is amazing.
- 48:12So, Hannah, what about your story?
- 48:14It's not as fiery as that. I just started playing football
- 48:18when I was younger. There wasn't any girls teams
- 48:20about. So we made one and then it just
- 48:23went on from there really. I love football and it helps me
- 48:27get my, when I was a teenager, get my aggression out in a
- 48:29healthy way. And I made friends, which, you
- 48:32know, was really, really nice. And I've, I've continued to do
- 48:34so along the way. That's actually how we met,
- 48:36wasn't it? It was we We met at Neverton
- 48:39United when your dad was my favorite manager.
- 48:43Just get out there. Yes, my favorite manager.
- 48:46And then we've just been friends ever since.
- 48:47So it really does bring people together.
- 48:50That's what I love about it. Yeah, brilliant race.
- 48:52What about you? What's your what's your
- 48:54involvement in football or or? Or well, to be honest, yeah,
- 48:57I'm, I'm not really a footballer myself.
- 49:00I don't get involved in too much football now playing wise.
- 49:03No, not playing, literally just help all organise the event and
- 49:09work hard. Really, that's all I really do.
- 49:11Yeah, that's brilliant. I'm.
- 49:12Not as active as. These you do the social media
- 49:15don't sell yourself. I was about, I was just about to
- 49:17say what? Yeah, I'll say what's your roles
- 49:18within this committee then? Yeah.
- 49:20So I deal with the social media side of things, the organic
- 49:24marketing, things like that because obviously, you know, we
- 49:27can't really afford to be funding any sort of marketing.
- 49:31So it's all done organically. We don't pay for ads or anything
- 49:34like that. So which this month for loan,
- 49:38we've pulled in 70,000 views to the Facebook page.
- 49:41Incredible. So from, from a small, from
- 49:45where we were to what we are now, it's, it's, it's
- 49:47incredible, isn't it? So what what's just go quickly
- 49:50run through your social media channels?
- 49:51Where where, what channels have you got on social media?
- 49:53You mentioned Facebook there. Yeah, so obviously we're on
- 49:56Facebook, Peterborough Women's Aid charity football match.
- 50:00You'll be able to find us on there and on there is also our
- 50:05GoFundMe page where you can donate directly to us or you
- 50:10can, like I say, donate on the day.
- 50:13But yeah, everything really is on our Facebook page.
- 50:17It's where we do most of our sort of posting and everything
- 50:21like that, isn't it? Yeah, we would like to get an
- 50:22Instagram and stuff like that, wouldn't.
- 50:24We I think in the future we get so busy, but it yeah, it's, it's
- 50:28an extra thing to deal with at the moment and juggle everything
- 50:32that you need in terms of information about a day will be
- 50:35on our Facebook so and. 9 out of 10 times people have Facebook.
- 50:39Yeah, of course, it's probably still the most popular or widely
- 50:41used. Yeah, obviously in the future we
- 50:43will branch out. You know, we've got an X and
- 50:46things like that. It's definitely in in the
- 50:49pipeline. In your future, yes it is.
- 50:51In my future, yeah. Not for.
- 50:53The girls, but. Thoroughly shoving that
- 50:54responsibility back at him. Yeah, they have a lot of other
- 50:58responsibilities. Yeah, of course you do.
- 50:59Of course you do. So just before we finish and
- 51:03another reminder of the event tomorrow, third event, third
- 51:09Charity 4 match that you're running and just again give us a
- 51:12rundown of where it's taking place, what time, how can people
- 51:16come and watch and what can they expect.
- 51:19So they can expect a lot. Football, there'll be bouncy
- 51:23castles, BBQ, we've got stall holders, there's, there's loads
- 51:27going on. We've got a raffle, you just
- 51:31find me tombola. So yeah, there's all sorts.
- 51:34Come down and have a look, that's what I'd say.
- 51:36Gate's open at 12:30. It's £3 for an adult cash, 1 LB
- 51:40for under sixteens and anyone younger than that is 3 under 2.
- 51:44And it's at. Peterborough Rugby Club.
- 51:47Fengate. Fengate one?
- 51:48Yes, that's it. Fengate 1.
- 51:49Get it right, Peterborough, our UFC Fengate, a great venue at
- 51:53the heart of the city and it's going to be a super event.
