- 0:04Speaker 1: Smell us now, lady, Welcome to Meet Eater Trivia podcast.
- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to Meet Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time.
- 0:31Speaker 2: That's seven am for our new friends in Tahiti on Thursday,
- 0:35Speaker 2: October thirtieth, and we are live from Meet Eater HQ
- 0:38Speaker 2: in Bozeman, Montana. I'm your host, Randa Williams, joined today
- 0:43Speaker 2: by my very close friends and colleagues, Seth Morris and
- 0:47Speaker 2: Corey Calkins.
- 0:48Speaker 3: Happy to be here.
- 0:49Speaker 4: Great to see you again, Randall.
- 0:51Speaker 5: On today's show, we'll interview Jordan Sillers, host of the
- 0:55Speaker 5: Blood Trails podcast, which officially drops today. That's correct.
- 1:00Speaker 2: We'll play a little game called fake news. We'll interview
- 1:04Speaker 2: Lauren Dolkater, who submitted one of the most unusual customer
- 1:08Speaker 2: service requests in the history of First Light. And finally
- 1:12Speaker 2: we'll look back at the good old days in another
- 1:15Speaker 2: installment of Throwback Thursday. Then here I write did we
- 1:19Speaker 2: have any plugs? And then below that Corey is added.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Season thirteen of Meat Eater keeps rolling on with the
- 1:26Speaker 2: second episode, which dropped a few days ago, Steve's Montana
- 1:30Speaker 2: Muzzloader Mule Deer Hunt. Next Monday is Steve and Evan
- 1:33Speaker 2: Felker's Alaska black bear hunt. And we also just dropped
- 1:38Speaker 2: a thrilling Ryan Callahan deer and elk combo hunt that
- 1:42Speaker 2: is sure to please viewers. Well said, that was a
- 1:45Speaker 2: nice touch.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Yeah, there you go.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Boys. How are we doing today?
- 1:49Speaker 3: Oh we're good.
- 1:49Speaker 5: It's a good, good week in Ja.
- 1:51Speaker 3: It's hot in season.
- 1:52Speaker 4: Oh yeah, Oh my goodness, ball is in the air,
- 1:55Speaker 4: deep falls in the air.
- 1:56Speaker 5: But some of us have already closed the book.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Some of us had a short elk season on the
- 2:02Speaker 2: chapter of our hunting season.
- 2:04Speaker 5: So Corey, how was your weekend?
- 2:06Speaker 4: Oh it's fantastic. Got into a bunch of elk. Oh
- 2:10Speaker 4: more elk than people, which usually good opener.
- 2:14Speaker 3: That's a wind right there.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Yeah, agreed, because man, I've had some openers where I
- 2:18Speaker 4: see a pile of people and zero elk or you know,
- 2:21Speaker 4: more people than elk. But so yeah, had a good
- 2:24Speaker 4: plan rolling into opening morning and uh didn't get it done.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Watched a few elk fall from other groups of hunters.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But Saturday was tough for us. The weather was just
- 2:34Speaker 4: oh windy, is get out?
- 2:35Speaker 2: Geez.
- 2:35Speaker 4: We joked multiple times we should have just brought a
- 2:37Speaker 4: flag or excuse me a kite with us a flag
- 2:40Speaker 4: to wave up on the side of the mountain.
- 2:42Speaker 2: You could have also stuffed your backpack full of elk
- 2:46Speaker 2: meat so that it catches a lot of wind and
- 2:48Speaker 2: spins you around as you walk down the mountain.
- 2:50Speaker 5: I like I could have used that was my innovation.
- 2:52Speaker 4: A little added weight would have actually makes you very unstable.
- 2:56Speaker 4: But Sunday I helped the buddy get a nice bowl,
- 3:00Speaker 4: which was fantastic. Mm hmm, not too bad of a
- 3:04Speaker 4: pack out. Beautiful day on Sunday and gorgeous. Yeah, I'm
- 3:08Speaker 4: still hunting myself, though I'm a little picky still. We
- 3:11Speaker 4: got a long season and something about having a tag
- 3:14Speaker 4: deer and elk tags in your pocket in late November
- 3:18Speaker 4: a beautiful thing.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'll trade you mine deer tag for your elk tag.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Not even that's how it works.
- 3:24Speaker 4: No, sure, I don't even think about deer until my
- 3:27Speaker 4: elk's down.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Seth.
- 3:28Speaker 2: I'd trade you my dear tag for your elk tag.
- 3:30Speaker 2: But that thing ain't good no more.
- 3:32Speaker 6: That's right, brother, Uh got you guys are insufferable.
- 3:38Speaker 5: We're getting so good at this, hell get good at this?
- 3:42Speaker 3: Uh yeah. Opener was a good one for me. M
- 3:46Speaker 3: and you tell me more.
- 3:48Speaker 5: Uh, well, brother, and then I'll tell you more.
- 3:50Speaker 7: I saw more people than elk by far, darn it,
- 3:56Speaker 7: what you know, That's how it goes around here.
- 3:58Speaker 3: But you know one thing I like about the open
- 4:00Speaker 3: is all the people just get the elk moving around.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Stuff's happening, Yeah, heavy button.
- 4:04Speaker 3: I just feel like I'm always in it.
- 4:06Speaker 7: It's never a quiet day, yeah, no matter how many
- 4:09Speaker 7: people around, you just feel like anything could happen at
- 4:12Speaker 7: any moment.
- 4:12Speaker 3: And that's what I experienced.
- 4:15Speaker 7: Saw a lot of dudes in openings, open areas. Every
- 4:17Speaker 7: open area that I glassed, every ridge had orange on it.
- 4:20Speaker 7: So I was like, you know what, I bet the
- 4:22Speaker 7: boys aren't in the timber sneaking around. You know, you
- 4:25Speaker 7: bet they oh, the boys being the people the people?
- 4:28Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, I bet by the boys you met the elk.
- 4:30Speaker 2: And no, in fact, you were thinking the opposite, that
- 4:32Speaker 2: the boys would be in the timber, yes, sneaking around
- 4:34Speaker 2: if they were the elk.
- 4:35Speaker 3: Where the boys exactly? Yeah, that's not confusing, but not
- 4:38Speaker 3: at all.
- 4:39Speaker 7: So yeah, I started doing some timber sneaking and just
- 4:42Speaker 7: bumped into some bulls and.
- 4:44Speaker 2: I'd like one of them, I'd like to put it
- 4:46Speaker 2: on the record that when Seth talks about elk hunting
- 4:49Speaker 2: and he visualizes how he'd like his elk season to
- 4:52Speaker 2: turn out, he often described sneaking through the timber and
- 4:57Speaker 2: shooting a bullet close range. So when you texted me
- 4:59Speaker 2: like that stuff, oh, I was delighted for you.
- 5:02Speaker 3: Yes, it was. It was exactly how I wanted it
- 5:04Speaker 3: to go down.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Really m hmmm, So happy for you.
- 5:08Speaker 7: And you know I I lucked out and had a
- 5:11Speaker 7: very short pack out. That's which never happens.
- 5:14Speaker 5: That's great, and now you have elk in the freezer
- 5:18Speaker 5: for your growing family.
- 5:20Speaker 3: That's right, beautiful.
- 5:22Speaker 2: What's your sons? Did I blow it?
- 5:25Speaker 3: No, it's it's announced. One on the way. Yeah, this
- 5:32Speaker 3: is live. He's gonna yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 5: Yeah, let's go back and cut that.
- 5:36Speaker 2: And if we could trim that out for the YouTube audience,
- 5:40Speaker 2: that would be and done.
- 5:43Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 5:44Speaker 2: I mean you're gonna feed that animal, yeah, which is
- 5:49Speaker 2: cool to think about. Beautiful.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:50Speaker 4: I get ready to throw that meat and a blender.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, a strong, handsome young Morris.
- 5:55Speaker 4: Little meat smoothies for the that's right.
- 5:59Speaker 3: What's your actually?
- 6:01Speaker 6: Spencer Spencer Newharts in the chat which we all love,
- 6:04Speaker 6: he says. Now Seth has to get back a Randa
- 6:06Speaker 6: by telling a secret about him.
- 6:07Speaker 4: Oh, secrets. Secrets are no fun unless you take secrets.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Do I have.
- 6:13Speaker 3: All the secrets I know about Randa? Would put him
- 6:15Speaker 3: in jail.
- 6:15Speaker 2: So yeah, let's avoid those. Thanks for asking about my
- 6:22Speaker 2: elk hunt. Yeah, it's great opening morning. This was a
- 6:26Speaker 2: close buddy. We packed in day before openers, set up
- 6:30Speaker 2: a nice little.
- 6:30Speaker 5: Camp, spend a good long time. Actually I haven't told
- 6:33Speaker 5: you this part of my story.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Spend a good long time pumping water and filling up
- 6:39Speaker 2: our water bladders. And my buddy bent down to rerig
- 6:44Speaker 2: the filter and his can of bear spray hooked on something.
- 6:48Speaker 3: Oh you did tell me about.
- 6:50Speaker 2: That, And so this is I'm standing like five feet
- 6:53Speaker 2: away and he's bent over and I just hear this,
- 6:55Speaker 2: sorry to the listeners.
- 6:58Speaker 5: And I thought it was a bear.
- 6:59Speaker 2: I mean, they should really look into making bear spray
- 7:03Speaker 2: deployments not sound like bears, because at first I thought
- 7:07Speaker 2: it was just a bear huffing, and then I realized
- 7:10Speaker 2: he had just fired off a one second burst of
- 7:13Speaker 2: bear spray, and I immediately thought we were going to
- 7:16Speaker 2: have to evac As they say, thankfully, it just went
- 7:20Speaker 2: straight into his backpack, and once we realized we didn't
- 7:24Speaker 2: have any on our hands or faces, we scrubbed his
- 7:27Speaker 2: backpack with snow, and to be honest, a bear could
- 7:31Speaker 2: probably smell it, but we couldn't. Interesting So that yeah,
- 7:36Speaker 2: then spotted some elk. Then Saturday mornings, the opener didn't
- 7:40Speaker 2: see any folks saw a lot of elk, and they
- 7:43Speaker 2: moved onto public land, which is where we had permission
- 7:46Speaker 2: to hunt, and.
- 7:49Speaker 5: Got to a couple of bulls.
- 7:51Speaker 2: A couple of smaller bulls sneaked across the property line
- 7:54Speaker 2: there and I had an opportunity for a shot. It's
- 7:58Speaker 2: my rifle. I placed the bullet accurately and uh tremendous damage.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Elk went down quickly, and then we packed it out
- 8:07Speaker 2: and we were back sleeping in well, we were sleeping
- 8:10Speaker 2: in separate beds, but we were sleeping in bed at
- 8:12Speaker 2: my house that night, each each with I had two dogs.
- 8:17Speaker 2: He had one.
- 8:18Speaker 3: What time of morning did you shoot that bull?
- 8:20Speaker 8: Uh?
- 8:22Speaker 5: Late morning, like round ten thirty.
- 8:25Speaker 3: Mine was nine thirty.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Yeah, And it's.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Odd because we killed the exact same bull.
- 8:32Speaker 2: Yes, So at some point we're gonna have to bring
- 8:35Speaker 2: our bulls together and try to decide if a man
- 8:39Speaker 2: could tell the difference between the two because they were
- 8:41Speaker 2: remarkably similar.
- 8:42Speaker 3: They are remarkably remarkably similar.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Yeah, the bowl we killed was at high noon day
- 8:46Speaker 4: after but really, yeah, never give up throughout the day.
- 8:49Speaker 2: Yeah, high noon, Yeah, I mean it is It is funny.
- 8:54Speaker 2: I've killed some things by just thinking to myself, well,
- 8:57Speaker 2: I'm not going to kill anything if I go home
- 8:59Speaker 2: now and then it happens.
- 9:01Speaker 3: What was ebel? Was that a five by five? It
- 9:03Speaker 3: was yep, ten just just a just three ten pointers,
- 9:07Speaker 3: you know.
- 9:07Speaker 2: Ye if that means yeah, five by five, that's thirty
- 9:10Speaker 2: points altogether.
- 9:11Speaker 4: Yeah, great work, congrats fellas.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Joining us on the line first is friend of the program,
- 9:18Speaker 2: Meet Eater managing editor Jordan Sillers. His new podcast, Blood
- 9:22Speaker 2: Trails is officially out as of today, Thursday, October thirtieth,
- 9:28Speaker 2: so go subscribe and check it out.
- 9:30Speaker 5: Jordan, Welcome to the show.
- 9:32Speaker 9: Hey, good to be here.
- 9:33Speaker 2: You you just had a successful hunt of your own,
- 9:36Speaker 2: if I recall correctly from the gram I did. Yes.
- 9:41Speaker 9: Yeah, I got to go out to Colorado and get
- 9:45Speaker 9: mule deer.
- 9:46Speaker 3: Very nice?
- 9:48Speaker 5: Is that a first mule deer? As a Texan.
- 9:51Speaker 9: It is, yes, first mule deer as a Texan. So
- 9:54Speaker 9: you know, not nothing huge, but three by three I
- 9:58Speaker 9: was very happy with.
- 9:59Speaker 2: Very good.
- 10:00Speaker 9: Yeah, a good end to about five or six days
- 10:02Speaker 9: of hunting.
- 10:03Speaker 5: Nice, very cool, cool way to go.
- 10:05Speaker 3: Congrats, Jordan, thank you.
- 10:07Speaker 2: The first episode of Blood Trails comes out today and
- 10:10Speaker 2: it involves the disappearance of a hunter named Bob Christian.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Can you tell us a little bit about the facts
- 10:15Speaker 2: of the case.
- 10:17Speaker 9: Yes, So, Bob Christian was an eighteen year old kid.
- 10:22Speaker 9: He's a college freshman. He lived in Madison, Wisconsin, and
- 10:25Speaker 9: he had a plan to go hunting on the opening
- 10:29Speaker 9: day of archery season. And this was all the way
- 10:32Speaker 9: back in nineteen seventy seven, so he was, you know,
- 10:34Speaker 9: one of the earlier people to really get into archery,
- 10:40Speaker 9: archery hunting white tail, and so the plan was there.
- 10:45Speaker 9: He was going to drive up to his buddy's house
- 10:47Speaker 9: in Bearaboo, which is about a forty five minute drive
- 10:50Speaker 9: from where he lived. They were going to he was
- 10:53Speaker 9: going to spend the night at his friend's house on Friday.
- 10:55Speaker 9: They were going to get up early on Saturday and
- 10:57Speaker 9: go hunting. But Bob was supposed to be at his
- 11:00Speaker 9: friend's house around six pm for dinner. But he never
- 11:03Speaker 9: showed up. And this was obviously before a cell phone,
- 11:06Speaker 9: so they couldn't just call him, and so they waited
- 11:09Speaker 9: and waited and waited. He didn't show up all, you know.
- 11:12Speaker 9: All that Friday night, they went out looking for him,
- 11:15Speaker 9: and they found the car he was driving in a
- 11:20Speaker 9: kind of a remote area that was actually an area
- 11:22Speaker 9: that he had experience hunting in, but that's not the
- 11:26Speaker 9: area that they had planned to hunt. And the weird
- 11:29Speaker 9: thing about this is the car was found but all
- 11:32Speaker 9: of its wheels and tires had been removed. I think
- 11:35Speaker 9: the battery had been removed, a few other things. And
- 11:39Speaker 9: so they found the car, they looked inside. Bob wasn't
- 11:42Speaker 9: in there. All of his archery stuff was gone, all
- 11:45Speaker 9: of his hunting gear was gone. I think there was
- 11:47Speaker 9: a letterman jacket that he owned was still in there,
- 11:50Speaker 9: but there was no sign of him. So they searched
- 11:53Speaker 9: the area for several days, still couldn't find him, and
- 11:58Speaker 9: to this day, no one knows what happened to him.
- 12:02Speaker 9: And there were a few kind of weird things they
- 12:06Speaker 9: found out throughout the investigation. A few people saw the
- 12:10Speaker 9: car that Friday night driving around. It's unclear if Bob
- 12:14Speaker 9: was the one driving it, and to this day, no
- 12:18Speaker 9: one quite knows what happened. So that's that's the first
- 12:21Speaker 9: episode of Blood Trails.
- 12:23Speaker 8: Uh.
- 12:23Speaker 9: It's out now. It's on Spotify, you know, anywhere you
- 12:25Speaker 9: get your podcasts, so you can go go check that out.
- 12:29Speaker 2: So how did you first learn about Bob's story. It's
- 12:33Speaker 2: a it's a fifty year old cold case. And yeah,
- 12:36Speaker 2: I don't think anyone here who's on our radar. How
- 12:39Speaker 2: did you find out about this?
- 12:41Speaker 9: Yeah? So I found out about this because the detective
- 12:44Speaker 9: who's currently in charge of the case for the Saut
- 12:47Speaker 9: County Sheriff's Office, he reached out to me. We put
- 12:50Speaker 9: out that first kind of pilot episode of Blood Trails
- 12:53Speaker 9: back in March, and he heard about it and he
- 12:56Speaker 9: reached out and said, you know, I'm working on this
- 12:58Speaker 9: cold case. It's about a hunter. I think it's something
- 13:01Speaker 9: that you guys could cover on Blood Trails. And he's
- 13:04Speaker 9: really been pushing to get you know, more people, uh,
- 13:09Speaker 9: to to get the word out about the case because
- 13:11Speaker 9: at this point, there isn't a whole lot of physical
- 13:13Speaker 9: evidence that's available, and so it really will come down
- 13:16Speaker 9: to someone coming forward who knows something, and so he's
- 13:20Speaker 9: trying to trying to get the word out.
- 13:22Speaker 2: So I assume you you have included that UH investigator
- 13:26Speaker 2: in your in your reporting. Who else did you speak
- 13:30Speaker 2: to uh while researching this case?
- 13:33Speaker 9: Yeah, so I talked with the detective of Tyler Poynton,
- 13:36Speaker 9: and then he connected me with Bob's sister, and then
- 13:40Speaker 9: also with that friend that he was supposed to meet,
- 13:44Speaker 9: And so for this episode, Uh, you know, I I
- 13:47Speaker 9: talked with really the the people who have the most
- 13:49Speaker 9: knowledge about this case who are still alive. Bob's parents
- 13:53Speaker 9: have passed away, but I was able to talk with
- 13:56Speaker 9: his sister, uh, and then and then his friend. So
- 13:59Speaker 9: and they are very kind, you know, It's it's one
- 14:01Speaker 9: of those things that is difficult for them to talk about,
- 14:04Speaker 9: but they want to know what happened to their brother
- 14:06Speaker 9: and to their friend, and so they were willing to
- 14:09Speaker 9: talk with me.
- 14:11Speaker 2: What what drew you to the story? I mean, obviously
- 14:16Speaker 2: there's a lot of cases like this. Is there is
- 14:19Speaker 2: there anything in particular that grabbed your attention when you
- 14:21Speaker 2: heard about it?
- 14:24Speaker 9: I mean, there's with this particular story, there are some
- 14:27Speaker 9: very strange details that are really kind of inexplicable. One
- 14:33Speaker 9: of the people who saw Bob's car saw it it
- 14:37Speaker 9: was it had pulled up the driveway of a cabin
- 14:40Speaker 9: where a nun lived, and she talked with the person
- 14:44Speaker 9: driving the car and he said, I'm looking for my
- 14:47Speaker 9: friend Bob. But the description she gave of this person
- 14:52Speaker 9: driving Bob's car looked a lot like Bob, and so
- 14:56Speaker 9: that's difficult to explain. There's all also a potential connection
- 15:01Speaker 9: to the Chicago serial killer John Wayne Gacy, and so
- 15:06Speaker 9: that's you know, and and that's currently being investigated. We're
- 15:09Speaker 9: actually waiting right now for some DNA results to come
- 15:13Speaker 9: back to see if there's a connection there. So there's
- 15:16Speaker 9: lots of interesting details. I also, I think with this
- 15:20Speaker 9: this podcast, you know, a true crime podcast about hunters
- 15:24Speaker 9: and anglers, I think our audience has a really unique
- 15:30Speaker 9: opportunity to push some of these cases forward because there'll
- 15:34Speaker 9: be people in our audience who are from that area
- 15:37Speaker 9: who know the place that that Bob's car was found,
- 15:42Speaker 9: and so they might have some information. And I also
- 15:44Speaker 9: think our audience is gonna is going to care about
- 15:46Speaker 9: these stories more so than you know, your kind of
- 15:49Speaker 9: standard true crime general audience. I think, you know, we
- 15:53Speaker 9: we want to figure out what happened to these people
- 15:56Speaker 9: who love to do this the same things that we
- 15:58Speaker 9: love to do.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Now, you mentioned, you mentioned that there's these bizarre details.
- 16:06Speaker 2: What's the most surprising thing you turned up in this
- 16:10Speaker 2: in this case during your reporting?
- 16:13Speaker 9: Yeah, I mean, I think it's that John Wayne Gacy connection,
- 16:16Speaker 9: which Gaysey was arrested I believe in nineteen seventy eight,
- 16:21Speaker 9: so that was just one year after Bob disappeared. And
- 16:26Speaker 9: the fact that that we just now are kind of
- 16:29Speaker 9: learning about this. The detective who's in charge got a
- 16:32Speaker 9: tip from someone who said that Gaysey did some work
- 16:36Speaker 9: at their at there. I believe it was an inn
- 16:39Speaker 9: or a hotel. He Gaysey did some work there, which
- 16:43Speaker 9: is around the same area that Bob disappeared around the
- 16:46Speaker 9: same time. And so they're they're looking at some of
- 16:50Speaker 9: the DNA from the some Gaysey victims that haven't been identified.
- 16:56Speaker 9: And so just the fact that it's been almost fifty
- 16:59Speaker 9: years and we're still learning more where there's still leads
- 17:02Speaker 9: to follow, and some of those leads are very surprising
- 17:06Speaker 9: and I mean obviously very disturbing. I think that's was
- 17:10Speaker 9: definitely the most surprising thing from this episode.
- 17:13Speaker 2: M This is obviously just the first of your series.
- 17:20Speaker 2: Can you give listeners a sense of what else they
- 17:23Speaker 2: can expect in the weeks ahead and how frequently these
- 17:26Speaker 2: will be coming out?
- 17:27Speaker 3: Yeah?
- 17:28Speaker 9: Yeah, absolutely. So this first season is going to have
- 17:31Speaker 9: eight episodes. The first one comes out today and then
- 17:34Speaker 9: they'll come out every Thursday until those those eight episodes
- 17:38Speaker 9: are over. And so the next two episodes is going
- 17:40Speaker 9: to be a two part series about a there was
- 17:45Speaker 9: in nineteen ninety six, a fifteen year old girl was murdered.
- 17:48Speaker 9: They couldn't figure out who did it. Last year they
- 17:52Speaker 9: found her killer. It turned out to be a BLM
- 17:56Speaker 9: biologist who still lived in the area. He was also
- 18:00Speaker 9: big time hunter, very involved in the hunting community, and
- 18:03Speaker 9: so those two episodes cover that investigation, how he was
- 18:07Speaker 9: found out, and then we really dive into this question
- 18:11Speaker 9: of how could someone do this right and then go
- 18:14Speaker 9: on to kind of live a normal life. So that's
- 18:16Speaker 9: the next two episodes. The one after that is about
- 18:19Speaker 9: a hunter who was murdered with his own rifle. They
- 18:23Speaker 9: don't know who did it. The one after that is
- 18:26Speaker 9: a similar kind of disappearance case similar to the Bob
- 18:29Speaker 9: Christian case, but there's a lot more information. Detectives think
- 18:33Speaker 9: they know who did it, but they've been unable to
- 18:37Speaker 9: basically gather enough evidence. There's a story of a hunter
- 18:43Speaker 9: who was stabbed seventeen times. He was found out in
- 18:47Speaker 9: the woods and they ruled it a suicide. So we
- 18:51Speaker 9: get into that and some of the reasons that the
- 18:53Speaker 9: evidence for that. So lots of interesting stuff. This is
- 18:56Speaker 9: not a podcast where every story is a cold case
- 19:00Speaker 9: and you don't have a resolution. Some of these stories
- 19:02Speaker 9: have been solved, but I would say there's still a
- 19:04Speaker 9: lot of questions, a lot of unanswered questions with which
- 19:08Speaker 9: with each of these cases. So really excited to share
- 19:11Speaker 9: these stories, and like I said, hopefully we can move
- 19:14Speaker 9: some of these cases forward. Hopefully some of our audience
- 19:17Speaker 9: will will know something and be able to help out.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Yeah, Jordan, we do have one more question for you
- 19:23Speaker 2: from the chat. Spencer wants to know the story behind
- 19:27Speaker 2: the baseball on the shelf behind you.
- 19:30Speaker 9: Oh, that's just a little league I got the game
- 19:35Speaker 9: ball one game.
- 19:37Speaker 3: That's awesome.
- 19:39Speaker 9: Yeah, thank you, just that at some point Yeah, no, man, no,
- 19:44Speaker 9: it's it was a shining moment of my baseball career.
- 19:47Speaker 3: Honestly, beautiful, beautiful.
- 19:49Speaker 2: Well, Jordan, good to see you. Congrats on this. I
- 19:53Speaker 2: know it's been a tremendous amount of work and folks
- 19:56Speaker 2: are excited. So again to the audience. Uh, check out
- 20:00Speaker 2: Blood Trails, go find it, subscribe and uh you can
- 20:04Speaker 2: look forward to eight episodes in the coming weeks.
- 20:08Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:08Speaker 9: Absolutely, And just one quick plug if you have a
- 20:11Speaker 9: story you think we should cover. Uh, we have an
- 20:14Speaker 9: email addressed set up. It's just Blood Trails at the
- 20:16Speaker 9: meater dot com. So you know, send, send me your ideas.
- 20:19Speaker 9: I'm I'm always looking for a good story.
- 20:21Speaker 2: Awesome, Thank you, Jordan, appreciate it.
- 20:24Speaker 3: Yeah, good lord Jordan.
- 20:26Speaker 4: Yeah, got goosebumps. Watch your six while you're out in
- 20:30Speaker 4: the woods.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:34Speaker 5: Our next segment is fake.
- 20:36Speaker 2: News, news, beat tape and rush shop.
- 20:40Speaker 10: You talk TAKEE balloon booking to you about Steve. It's
- 20:44Speaker 10: a better shot than done this.
- 20:46Speaker 3: So where is that soaked?
- 20:47Speaker 10: This opportunity comes once e for a few weeks.
- 20:51Speaker 6: You can do anything you set your minds to you guys,
- 20:54Speaker 6: except like teleport or fly or something stuff like that.
- 20:58Speaker 5: You know, that's it was that a new touch at
- 21:00Speaker 5: the end.
- 21:01Speaker 6: No, it's just everyone always talks over it, so it's
- 21:03Speaker 6: been hidden. There's a few of those in some of
- 21:04Speaker 6: my drops for this, like little Sneak, Sneak at the end,
- 21:07Speaker 6: and I've never mentioned it, but thanks for calling me Phil.
- 21:10Speaker 4: Little slim shady mix.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Fake news is where I read a series of headlines
- 21:16Speaker 2: in which a real one is hiding among three impostors.
- 21:19Speaker 2: Your job is to figure out which one is true.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Can't wait? Bring it on all ready for this? Ben
- 21:26Speaker 3: or Randall?
- 21:27Speaker 8: Yes?
- 21:27Speaker 2: And uh?
- 21:28Speaker 3: Phil?
- 21:28Speaker 5: Would you keep score? Please?
- 21:31Speaker 3: Uh? Probably not. I think I'm so simple.
- 21:35Speaker 2: I'll keep score.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Thanks.
- 21:38Speaker 8: Uh.
- 21:38Speaker 2: Our first headline comes from the venerable journalistic outlet People
- 21:42Speaker 2: dot com.
- 21:44Speaker 3: Sorry, Randall, hold on a sec here.
- 21:46Speaker 5: No, it's fine.
- 21:48Speaker 3: No, it's not your fault at all.
- 21:50Speaker 2: No, No, I didn't really think about how complicated it
- 21:53Speaker 2: was on your end of just killed time for.
- 21:56Speaker 3: Longer, Randall, Light, I forget.
- 21:58Speaker 5: I see you have it up.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Now it's up.
- 22:00Speaker 5: Now I'll do that again.
- 22:02Speaker 3: Great.
- 22:03Speaker 2: Our first headline comes from the venerable journalistic outlet People
- 22:06Speaker 2: dot com formerly People Magazine. Aggressive blank destroyed after escaping
- 22:14Speaker 2: from overturned truck, but one is still on the loose.
- 22:17Speaker 3: Oh I just read this.
- 22:18Speaker 5: No, oh, that kind of don't.
- 22:21Speaker 2: Show them, don't show them. I'll read that headline again
- 22:25Speaker 2: for those of you playing at home, aggressive blank destroyed
- 22:30Speaker 2: after escaping from overturned truck, but one is still on
- 22:34Speaker 2: the loose. Your options are A lions, B elephants, C
- 22:42Speaker 2: monkeys or D wild horses.
- 22:46Speaker 4: All could be aggressive.
- 22:50Speaker 5: Yeah, that was a trick.
- 22:51Speaker 2: That was That was tricky for me when I was
- 22:53Speaker 2: coming up with the fake answers as I had to
- 22:55Speaker 2: choose aggressive animals that could be turned. It could be
- 22:58Speaker 2: in an overturned truck.
- 22:59Speaker 4: You don't think the word destroyed harmed the animal? Do you?
- 23:02Speaker 2: I do? Actually I do.
- 23:05Speaker 4: I did not hear about that.
- 23:06Speaker 5: That's a clinical term.
- 23:08Speaker 2: A lions, B elephants this weekend, C monkeys or D
- 23:13Speaker 2: wild horses.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Interesting?
- 23:16Speaker 5: What could it be?
- 23:17Speaker 2: Seth's got an answer because Seth keeps up with his
- 23:21Speaker 2: social media headlines People Magazine. I thought, I thought this
- 23:26Speaker 2: might be too obvious because it's been all over has it? Yeah?
- 23:30Speaker 4: Interesting?
- 23:30Speaker 2: Must That shouldn't shape your thinking, Corey, You should just
- 23:33Speaker 2: follow your gut. Is A lions, B elephants, C monkeys
- 23:38Speaker 2: or D wild horses.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Well, golly, you can't hide an elephant. This here we go, Carolina. No, okay,
- 23:49Speaker 4: definitely haven't heard about it.
- 23:51Speaker 2: Let's go all right, flip over your boards, gentlemen, we
- 23:55Speaker 2: both say c monkeys. Darn it, you both got it correct.
- 23:59Speaker 7: I saw gripping grin. I'm gonna yeah, so like some
- 24:03Speaker 7: hunters got after him. I guess you're unless that was
- 24:07Speaker 7: fake news. But I saw on the webs that I
- 24:10Speaker 7: don't know, some hunter was sitting in a deer stand
- 24:13Speaker 7: and one came by.
- 24:14Speaker 2: I don't know, I don't know who got the monkeys,
- 24:17Speaker 2: but I can tell you that a truck carrying twenty
- 24:19Speaker 2: one Recis monkeys from Tulane University to a testing facility
- 24:23Speaker 2: in Florida overturned just on Tuesday, setting the primates loose.
- 24:28Speaker 2: The Jasper County Sheriff's Department posted on Facebook that quote,
- 24:32Speaker 2: the monkeys are approximately forty pounds, aggressive to humans, and
- 24:36Speaker 2: carry hepatitis, C, herpes, and COVID. Howat, in a separate
- 24:42Speaker 2: statement to Lane University, said the monkeys had not been
- 24:45Speaker 2: exposed to any of these Sure good people contacted the
- 24:48Speaker 2: Jasper County Sheriff's Department, who had no additional comment about
- 24:53Speaker 2: the discrepancy and information and referred to follow their social
- 24:57Speaker 2: media pages for updates on the case. So if a
- 25:01Speaker 2: deer hunter got one of those monkeys, I'm not sure.
- 25:03Speaker 2: I assumed it was the Sheriff's department, But.
- 25:06Speaker 4: Boy, stay tuned for on the missing monkey.
- 25:08Speaker 2: Real exciting start to our game. We're tied at one
- 25:10Speaker 2: to one recess monkey. Our second headline comes to us
- 25:15Speaker 2: from the old Gray Lady the New York Times. Beware
- 25:20Speaker 2: of swiper a blank at Grand Teton Park with a
- 25:24Speaker 2: penchant for footwear? Yep, is it a a black bear,
- 25:28Speaker 2: be a marmot, see a fox, or be a seasonal employee? Again,
- 25:34Speaker 2: the headline reads, beware of swiper a blank at Grand
- 25:38Speaker 2: Teton Park with a penchant for footwear. And your options
- 25:43Speaker 2: once again are a black bear, a marmot.
- 25:47Speaker 3: Do you know this one?
- 25:48Speaker 5: A fox or a seasonal employee.
- 25:53Speaker 4: All options would potentially snag a footwear piece and take
- 25:58Speaker 4: it away back to their whole seasonal employee would be
- 26:02Speaker 4: living in a hole somewhere, for sure.
- 26:03Speaker 5: It would be weird.
- 26:04Speaker 2: Though if his seasonal employee got a nickname from a newspaper, well,
- 26:09Speaker 2: I don't know. I guess they could you know it's
- 26:10Speaker 2: like the Boston Strangler. M Seth's got an answer, Seth,
- 26:16Speaker 2: are you confident Corey's got an answer?
- 26:19Speaker 3: Pretty good? I narrowed it down to two.
- 26:21Speaker 5: I think all right based on just your gut yep. Perfect.
- 26:24Speaker 5: That's how we like to play around here.
- 26:26Speaker 2: Flip those boards over, boys, let me see him. Seth says, see,
- 26:31Speaker 2: oh a fox, Cory says.
- 26:33Speaker 5: Be a marmot. We have a correct answer in the room.
- 26:38Speaker 5: It's a fox. WHOA I've been gut shot. Oh look
- 26:41Speaker 5: at that. Look at that photo there there is.
- 26:45Speaker 2: The National Park Service announced on a poster wanted for
- 26:48Speaker 2: grand theft footwear with an illustration of a fox gripping
- 26:52Speaker 2: a sneaker in its teeth, crimes stealing left shoes, parentheses
- 26:56Speaker 2: they taste better flip flops, and camper's pride. This whimsical
- 27:00Speaker 2: wanted poster, which branded the fox, the sneaker Snatcher, the
- 27:04Speaker 2: midnight mismatcher, and swiper. The fox, was part of the
- 27:08Speaker 2: park's initial effort to warn campers that Parkerer's shoes had
- 27:11Speaker 2: been vanishing, but last week, unfortunately, the tally of purloined
- 27:16Speaker 2: footwear rose to thirty two because visitors were intentionally leaving
- 27:22Speaker 2: out their footwear as offerings to the Fox, just in
- 27:24Speaker 2: case he comes by.
- 27:25Speaker 3: I wonder what he's doing with him.
- 27:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I don't know.
- 27:29Speaker 5: I don't know shoes, Yeah, that'd be interesting to see.
- 27:34Speaker 2: I hope we get some more information on Swiper Fox
- 27:37Speaker 2: for a future episode of fake News, because I don't
- 27:39Speaker 2: know anything. So now it seems we have a one
- 27:44Speaker 2: to two deficit here. Seth is in the lead, Corey
- 27:49Speaker 2: is losing by one point correct, and there is one
- 27:52Speaker 2: headline left to go. Phil, Let's give it to him.
- 27:56Speaker 2: A fisherman went digging for worms. Instead, he found thirteen
- 28:01Speaker 2: pounds of blank? Is it Civil war cannonballs, marijuana, ancient
- 28:08Speaker 2: treasure or dinosaur teeth?
- 28:10Speaker 9: Interesting?
- 28:11Speaker 5: Where was he that's going to give me?
- 28:15Speaker 2: A fisherman went digging for worms? He found thirteen pounds
- 28:19Speaker 2: of blank? Is it Civil war cannonballs, marijuana, ancient treasure
- 28:27Speaker 2: or dinosaur teeth.
- 28:28Speaker 4: I wasn't around back in the Civil War, but I
- 28:30Speaker 4: feel like a cannon ball would have weighed about thirteen pounds.
- 28:33Speaker 2: You know, I had I had problems when I was
- 28:36Speaker 2: coming up with my fake answers. I had problems thinking
- 28:39Speaker 2: of things that would be in the ground that you'd
- 28:41Speaker 2: measure in poundage.
- 28:42Speaker 4: Okay, so it's not a.
- 28:45Speaker 2: No.
- 28:45Speaker 7: No.
- 28:46Speaker 2: It could be well, of course, because if they were
- 28:48Speaker 2: different sized cannonballs, you wouldn't say a small one in
- 28:51Speaker 2: a medium one.
- 28:52Speaker 4: Sure chunks of balls pounds.
- 28:54Speaker 6: The chat is reprimanding all of you for not having
- 28:58Speaker 6: any reference to Dora the explore or when it comes
- 29:00Speaker 6: to Swiper the fox steals things, darn.
- 29:06Speaker 5: Guilty as guilty as charged.
- 29:08Speaker 3: I think he wears a little zoro mask.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Not a not a not a door guy.
- 29:13Speaker 6: It's a little little past your time, but it it helps.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Seth's got an answer, Corey's got an answer.
- 29:21Speaker 3: The a tie breaker.
- 29:22Speaker 2: They've got different answers. No, I'm thinking of one as
- 29:25Speaker 2: I do this. Uh you ready, Corey?
- 29:31Speaker 5: Show me what you got big boys?
- 29:34Speaker 3: Cannonball?
- 29:35Speaker 2: Corey says b weed. Seth says, A cannonballs. The correct
- 29:41Speaker 2: answer is c ancient treasure. A Swedish fisherman, searching for
- 29:47Speaker 2: gooey juicy worms to use his bait near his summer
- 29:50Speaker 2: home near Stockholm instead struck something far more solid, a
- 29:55Speaker 2: copper cauldron brimming with coins and jewelry. In total, defined
- 29:59Speaker 2: comprised thirteen pounds of Early Middle Ages silver.
- 30:04Speaker 3: Are we good, Phil, Yeah, don't worry about the TV.
- 30:06Speaker 5: This is quote.
- 30:08Speaker 2: This is probably one of the largest silver treasures from
- 30:11Speaker 2: the Early Middle Ages that has been found in Sweden,
- 30:14Speaker 2: says Sophia Anderson, the antiquarian at the Stockholm County Administrative Board.
- 30:19Speaker 2: She says this in a translated statement, so I don't
- 30:22Speaker 2: know the original Swedish. I assume that they translated her accurately.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Quote.
- 30:26Speaker 5: We do not yet know how.
- 30:28Speaker 3: Excuse me, God, just take a breath, Randall.
- 30:31Speaker 2: We do not yet know exactly how many coins there are,
- 30:34Speaker 2: but I believe it could be upboard of twenty thousand. Wow,
- 30:38Speaker 2: a veritable fortune in Middle Aged treasure.
- 30:42Speaker 3: Twenty thousand coins are twenty thousand dollars worth of coins?
- 30:45Speaker 5: Twenty thousand coins.
- 30:47Speaker 2: I don't know if we have the exchange rate pinned down.
- 30:50Speaker 3: That'd be interesting to know.
- 30:52Speaker 2: But with that final question, Seth is the winner of
- 30:55Speaker 2: fake News by a score of two to one.
- 30:58Speaker 5: Thanks for playing. I enjoyed this good game.
- 31:02Speaker 3: That was great.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Back to our regularly scheduled programming and that brings us
- 31:06Speaker 2: to listener feedback. Phil, what does the chat have to say?
- 31:10Speaker 2: Sorry if I'm rushing you.
- 31:12Speaker 6: No, it's no, it's fine, it's moving on. It's very
- 31:14Speaker 6: efficient and I appreciate that.
- 31:15Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, that's I mean, that's the vibe we're.
- 31:17Speaker 6: Going When this show is run professionally, it kind of
- 31:20Speaker 6: catches me off.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Guard, you know, that's the vibe I'm going for here.
- 31:23Speaker 6: Uh, Mogor asks when will Daylight Saving Time end in Montana?
- 31:28Speaker 3: This year?
- 31:28Speaker 6: Ours just ended this past Sunday. I didn't know that
- 31:30Speaker 6: it's on different schedules around the world, but Mogor, I
- 31:33Speaker 6: believe is OURS is next week, next Tuesday.
- 31:36Speaker 4: Saturday night day ends.
- 31:37Speaker 5: Yeah, usually it's a week.
- 31:38Speaker 3: Oh it's like a Sunday Saturday night into Sunday.
- 31:40Speaker 5: Yes, right, okay, it's coming up soon.
- 31:43Speaker 3: I think this is going to shift our shift.
- 31:46Speaker 5: Our hunting hours around a little bit.
- 31:47Speaker 2: Here.
- 31:47Speaker 4: Sunset will be around five thirty.
- 31:49Speaker 2: Now sunset a week from Thursday. Sunset is at four
- 31:53Speaker 2: thirty really a week from today, yeah, this time next week,
- 31:57Speaker 2: sunset will be.
- 31:58Speaker 3: At four thirty yep, and barely light heired.
- 32:01Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, so we're gonna have old some earlier mornings,
- 32:05Speaker 2: but also earlier evenings back at the tent.
- 32:07Speaker 4: True try I enjoy long nights.
- 32:10Speaker 5: Interesting question more thank you.
- 32:12Speaker 6: Yeah, we had a legitimate question about rifle calbers and
- 32:15Speaker 6: the chap At spencer. New Heart has just been fielding those.
- 32:18Speaker 3: Is that the bullet question? Yeah? Yeah, I like that one.
- 32:21Speaker 6: Uh well, there there is another bull asking if you
- 32:23Speaker 6: guys are shooting copper Oh yeah, that's the one I said, Okay, no, yeah, there.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Was one about whitetail caliber. Gotcha, Yeah, I.
- 32:29Speaker 7: Believe old Sethi is I'm shooting the all copper hornety
- 32:33Speaker 7: c X bullet out of my seven PRC.
- 32:34Speaker 3: That's what I shot that bull with.
- 32:36Speaker 2: Hmm, beautiful. I am not same.
- 32:39Speaker 6: Lead Seth is from Garrett. Why does Kelsey never paint
- 32:44Speaker 6: a picture? Paint pictures of Wiley? I don't give an
- 32:46Speaker 6: f about cowboys? Can I pet that dog?
- 32:48Speaker 4: Can I pet that out?
- 32:50Speaker 3: Well, if you are willing to spend some money, she
- 32:53Speaker 3: will do that. Yeah. I don't think get that commission.
- 32:56Speaker 5: I don't think that brush moves for free.
- 32:57Speaker 3: The cowboys pay the bills.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Wiley is very photogenic.
- 33:03Speaker 2: Yeah, beautiful animal. What else you got here for?
- 33:06Speaker 6: Well, here's another caliber question. Justin is asking does what
- 33:09Speaker 6: if you shoot a sig cross in three hundred wind
- 33:11Speaker 6: bag and if so, do you like it? I have
- 33:13Speaker 6: a Montana bear in Alaska. You know it's a mushy sentence,
- 33:17Speaker 6: but he's got some hunts and he wants to know
- 33:19Speaker 6: if that's a good thing to go with.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Corey, Yeah, I sure do. It's the sig cross saw
- 33:24Speaker 4: tooth and a three hundred wind mag.
- 33:26Speaker 3: Love it.
- 33:27Speaker 4: I will say, I don't like carrying around the mountains,
- 33:30Speaker 4: but when it's time to shoot something, it's a dream.
- 33:33Speaker 2: So well, yeah, I mean it's worth it. There's no
- 33:35Speaker 2: free lunch, true. I have a sig crossed the original magnum,
- 33:40Speaker 2: not the saw tooth and three hundred wind mag and
- 33:43Speaker 2: uh yeah my uh my wife killed a buffalo with it,
- 33:48Speaker 2: shooting a copper bullet. So just to tie those two
- 33:51Speaker 2: questions together, was that for some hosting, good job, ran, Yeah,
- 33:55Speaker 2: three hundred wind mag can't go wrong unless unless your
- 33:58Speaker 2: recoil shy.
- 33:59Speaker 5: Then you get a big break YEP or can or.
- 34:02Speaker 4: A meat eater suppressor.
- 34:04Speaker 6: Here's another plug for you. This question is from Dill Bean.
- 34:07Speaker 6: Any thoughts on the one hundred mile buffer zone bill
- 34:09Speaker 6: for quote border security and SNR unquote. We just released
- 34:14Speaker 6: a bonus flap this morning Steve talks to one of
- 34:17Speaker 6: his buddies about this whole topic. You can check that
- 34:20Speaker 6: out about what it's got Steve's thoughts in there. The
- 34:24Speaker 6: thing Steve said that I think kind of sums the
- 34:26Speaker 6: whole thing up is if you have a group of
- 34:27Speaker 6: people that are trying to do something very unpopular, unsuccessfully
- 34:31Speaker 6: for decades, and then they try to frame actually it's
- 34:34Speaker 6: about border security. Yeah right, and then they introduce a bill.
- 34:37Speaker 6: It smells fishy.
- 34:39Speaker 2: So you know, I don't know enough about it to
- 34:42Speaker 2: speak to it knowledgeably.
- 34:43Speaker 3: Check out the podcast.
- 34:44Speaker 5: Check out the podcast.
- 34:45Speaker 4: Yeah, just stay out of the wilderness.
- 34:46Speaker 2: All I have to say.
- 34:48Speaker 6: Ryan asks Randy, which I guess is something people call
- 34:51Speaker 6: you when, and what was your most recent cased meat meal?
- 34:55Speaker 2: Great question? Great question.
- 34:59Speaker 4: Couldn't have been that long ago.
- 35:00Speaker 2: No, No, it wasn't Saturday.
- 35:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 35:04Speaker 4: Didn't you say something about a corn dog?
- 35:06Speaker 2: No, that was the bull that I'm going to talk about. Gosh,
- 35:11Speaker 2: that's a good question. Uh, I know I've been eating
- 35:15Speaker 2: bratwurst at home regularly.
- 35:19Speaker 8: Uh.
- 35:21Speaker 2: Sorry, Ryan, I don't have a good answer for you.
- 35:23Speaker 2: It wasn't that long ago.
- 35:25Speaker 3: A couple of weeks got to be with you yea,
- 35:27Speaker 3: within the last couple.
- 35:28Speaker 5: Within two weeks, within two weeks for sure.
- 35:30Speaker 4: Well, that could be multiple questions. Case is in like
- 35:33Speaker 4: a sausage, or case is in like the hot case
- 35:36Speaker 4: from a gas station.
- 35:38Speaker 2: Oh, it hasn't been that long since since I've tickled
- 35:42Speaker 2: the since I've tickled the hot case at town pump.
- 35:44Speaker 4: That's where my head was.
- 35:45Speaker 3: At tickled the hot case at town pump.
- 35:47Speaker 10: Ye.
- 35:48Speaker 3: I think I read some online erotica, same.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Title, Phil, Please, you're live on air.
- 35:55Speaker 3: I know we got kids.
- 35:57Speaker 5: What else you got, Phil.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Steve Q.
- 36:00Speaker 6: This is me of having a nun fetish in next
- 36:01Speaker 6: week's episode of The Mediator podcast. So that's not really
- 36:04Speaker 6: everything's out the window now, Dune folks. Yeah, you do
- 36:07Speaker 6: one more here? Yeah, I don't. Let's see what's Yeah,
- 36:11Speaker 6: here's one for all of you.
- 36:12Speaker 3: Phil. You're playing Destiny Rising.
- 36:14Speaker 6: No, I I I this is I don't know if
- 36:18Speaker 6: I've said this before. I have played thousands, literal thousands
- 36:22Speaker 6: of hours of Destiny two, and much like my game Fuel,
- 36:26Speaker 6: I had to quit that cold turkey. I do not
- 36:28Speaker 6: play Destiny anymore. Destiny Rising, okay, Randall. Destiny Rising is
- 36:33Speaker 6: the new mobile Destiny game I will not touch it.
- 36:37Speaker 6: I have never touched it. Take that to the bank
- 36:41Speaker 6: for all of you who care, gosh, which is as
- 36:43Speaker 6: or King.
- 36:44Speaker 2: That's a fantastic listener feedback section. Thanks for wrapping up, Phil,
- 36:49Speaker 2: Keep question coming, Gang, keep them coming. Would love, would
- 36:52Speaker 2: love some more feedback. We're going to do an extended
- 36:54Speaker 2: feedback at the end of this episode.
- 36:56Speaker 5: My co host just learned.
- 36:59Speaker 3: Up.
- 36:59Speaker 2: Next, we're gonna speak with Lauren Dolcater, who submitted one
- 37:03Speaker 2: of the most hair raising customer service emails in First
- 37:06Speaker 2: Light's history after a tree limb impaled her leg. Lauren,
- 37:10Speaker 2: Welcome to the show. Hello, thank you for joining us.
- 37:16Speaker 2: So as I understand it, you needed a replacement set
- 37:20Speaker 2: of kiln bass layers after a recent hunt in Wyoming.
- 37:25Speaker 2: What were you hunting and when was this?
- 37:29Speaker 8: It was about five weeks ago. We were hunting archery elk.
- 37:38Speaker 8: It was middle of September, and yeah, we were there
- 37:43Speaker 8: up near Dubois, Wyoming, hunting elk for about a week and.
- 37:50Speaker 10: Yeah, it was The week was off to a great start.
- 37:53Speaker 8: We got into some milk and had a lot of
- 37:57Speaker 8: we had a close encounter with a moose. It was
- 38:01Speaker 8: just off to a great start and then Friday, on
- 38:06Speaker 8: day five, we uh, everything kind of changed.
- 38:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 38:12Speaker 2: Can you can you describe ut the incident that led
- 38:15Speaker 2: to your injury here? What happened?
- 38:18Speaker 10: Uh?
- 38:18Speaker 8: Yeah, So we were driving a side by side early morning,
- 38:23Speaker 8: so it was still dark and we were about forty
- 38:27Speaker 8: five minutes to an hour that we needed to get
- 38:30Speaker 8: up a pretty rough road to get where. We had
- 38:34Speaker 8: watched some elk go into Septimber the night before, so
- 38:38Speaker 8: we felt like we had a good chance, but we
- 38:39Speaker 8: needed to get up there before first light. And we've
- 38:45Speaker 8: driven up that road many times. But for some reason,
- 38:51Speaker 8: we were going up and my hunting partner was driving
- 38:56Speaker 8: and I was in the passenger seat, and I don't
- 39:00Speaker 8: remember if there was like something in the road or
- 39:03Speaker 8: just like a really big pothole or something, and he
- 39:05Speaker 8: kind of tried to miss it and we got too
- 39:09Speaker 8: close to the edge and there was a we were
- 39:12Speaker 8: driving through a burn and there was an old lodge
- 39:15Speaker 8: pole tree that was hanging over the edge of the
- 39:17Speaker 8: road and when we hit it, it came through the
- 39:20Speaker 8: side by side door and went into my leg.
- 39:23Speaker 2: Wow.
- 39:25Speaker 6: I will just say I have I have some pictures
- 39:27Speaker 6: that Lauren shared with us. There are not gory, but
- 39:31Speaker 6: I would say one of them is rather upsetting. At
- 39:33Speaker 6: least when I saw it, I got like full body chills.
- 39:36Speaker 6: So I'm gonna pull that up a little bit. If
- 39:37Speaker 6: you don't want to see that, look away.
- 39:39Speaker 2: Yeah, Lauren, can you can you describe what was going
- 39:42Speaker 2: through your head? Right?
- 39:44Speaker 5: Has that happened? Did you know right away?
- 39:47Speaker 2: Or did the did the side by side immediately come
- 39:51Speaker 2: to a stop? Like what was what was the first
- 39:53Speaker 2: so the first thing that happened or the next thing
- 39:55Speaker 2: that happened.
- 39:57Speaker 8: Yeah, the side by side came to a complete stop,
- 40:01Speaker 8: and me and my partner kind of just looked at
- 40:05Speaker 8: each other and I felt a pressure against my leg.
- 40:10Speaker 10: I didn't really feel.
- 40:11Speaker 8: Any sharp pain or anything, so immediately I just thought
- 40:14Speaker 8: that the side by side door kind of like pinned
- 40:18Speaker 8: me and my leg was stuck. And then I reached
- 40:23Speaker 8: down because he was starting to put it in reverse,
- 40:25Speaker 8: and I just kind of had a weird feeling and
- 40:28Speaker 8: I reached down and I could feel something going into
- 40:32Speaker 8: my leg. So I told him to stop, and I
- 40:36Speaker 8: was like, I think something's in my leg and he's like,
- 40:38Speaker 8: what do you mean? And so I turned on my
- 40:40Speaker 8: headlamp and looked down and I could see that that
- 40:42Speaker 8: tree was in my leg.
- 40:43Speaker 2: Out.
- 40:46Speaker 5: How did your partner respond?
- 40:48Speaker 3: Was it just the two of you?
- 40:50Speaker 8: Yeah, it was just the two of us, he responded
- 40:54Speaker 8: pretty well. Obviously we were both shocked. He put it
- 40:58Speaker 8: in the park, and we both work in the medical field.
- 41:04Speaker 10: So I feel like that kind of helped us a
- 41:05Speaker 10: little bit.
- 41:09Speaker 8: Obviously, if you're getting paled by something, the last thing
- 41:12Speaker 8: you want to do is pull it out, right, So I.
- 41:15Speaker 10: Told him to put it in park and told him
- 41:17Speaker 10: to come.
- 41:18Speaker 8: Around the side of the side by side so we
- 41:19Speaker 8: could see if I was still attached to the tree
- 41:23Speaker 8: or if the branch had broke, which luckily it had,
- 41:27Speaker 8: that would have been a whole another orga trying to
- 41:29Speaker 8: get off of that. But yeah, just from the crash,
- 41:35Speaker 8: the fender flare of the side by side had enough
- 41:39Speaker 8: pressure that it broke the branch or end of the
- 41:42Speaker 8: tree actually, but there was about probably about three feet
- 41:50Speaker 8: of it hanging off from my leg, and we were
- 41:53Speaker 8: able to get the side by side door.
- 41:55Speaker 10: Open and kind of.
- 42:00Speaker 3: She'll be right back.
- 42:02Speaker 8: We were able to get the side by side open
- 42:03Speaker 8: and situate the piece of wood into the side by
- 42:07Speaker 8: side with me, and I kind of just had to
- 42:10Speaker 8: almost stand up with my good leg and hold onto
- 42:13Speaker 8: the ceiling of the side by side and keep my
- 42:15Speaker 8: legs straight for a twenty minute ride back down the mountain.
- 42:19Speaker 2: Oh my god. And then what what It's obviously at
- 42:23Speaker 2: some point you got medical attention from first responders.
- 42:27Speaker 5: What was that like?
- 42:28Speaker 2: Did you drive to the hospital or did they come
- 42:30Speaker 2: out to pick you up or what did that look like?
- 42:36Speaker 10: So I keep a garment in reach for obviously things
- 42:40Speaker 10: like this.
- 42:40Speaker 8: But I knew because we've hunted there for a few years,
- 42:44Speaker 8: we knew that we were only about twenty minutes from
- 42:47Speaker 8: cell service and we needed to get down the mountain anyways.
- 42:51Speaker 8: And where we had cell service, we knew an ambulance
- 42:54Speaker 8: could get there and there'd be enough room for a
- 42:56Speaker 8: helicopter to land. So we got down there, called nine
- 43:02Speaker 8: one one, and they sent an ambulance that was stationed
- 43:08Speaker 8: down in Doboys, which was only about fifteen minutes from
- 43:11Speaker 8: where we were. So they sent an ambulance up and
- 43:17Speaker 8: got Ivy started and helped me out with meds and
- 43:22Speaker 8: trying to figure out if we were able to drive
- 43:25Speaker 8: to a hospital because we're about an hour and a
- 43:26Speaker 8: half from the nearest hospital.
- 43:30Speaker 5: And at this point I'm sure the pain had set in.
- 43:34Speaker 8: Yeah, definitely, it was more so like cramping pain, like
- 43:40Speaker 8: my muscles were obviously trying to reject whatever was.
- 43:43Speaker 10: In my leg.
- 43:44Speaker 8: Yeah, and I think with enough adrenaline nothing was sharp pain.
- 43:50Speaker 8: But definitely was scared of what kind of outcomes my head.
- 43:58Speaker 10: But yeah, So we were on.
- 44:00Speaker 8: The scene for probably about an hour and then they
- 44:03Speaker 8: decided they wanted to fly me to a trauma center
- 44:06Speaker 8: because we were over four hour drive from the nearest
- 44:09Speaker 8: trauma center, and so yeah, they landed a helicopter and
- 44:14Speaker 8: flew me to Idaho Falls.
- 44:16Speaker 9: Wow.
- 44:18Speaker 2: What after you got to the hospital? What were the
- 44:21Speaker 2: extent of your injuries? And how are you doing today.
- 44:26Speaker 8: I got extremely lucky with the path that the tree
- 44:31Speaker 8: went in. It missed bone and arteries and everything that's
- 44:36Speaker 8: super important. It did get my glute muscle a little
- 44:41Speaker 8: bit because it went about six inches into my leg,
- 44:47Speaker 8: But yeah, I got there. They did some cts really quick,
- 44:51Speaker 8: make sure that I didn't hit any arteries that would
- 44:54Speaker 8: cause me to bleed out or anything like that, and
- 44:57Speaker 8: I was in surgery within a half hour and they
- 45:01Speaker 8: just went in and took it out and cleaned everything.
- 45:04Speaker 8: The biggest worry was infection. So the surgeon did really
- 45:10Speaker 8: good and got it all cleaned out. And yeah, I'm
- 45:14Speaker 8: really lucky. I was walking within two hours of surgery.
- 45:18Speaker 2: That'sable.
- 45:20Speaker 8: And yeah, I was actually able to go on a
- 45:24Speaker 8: hunt last week that.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Yeah, did you get did you get your replacement base
- 45:34Speaker 2: layers yet? From first light, I hope the answer is yes,
- 45:38Speaker 2: otherwise this can be tremendously embarrassing.
- 45:43Speaker 10: They they have.
- 45:44Speaker 8: Sent them, they're on their way. Uh, it's more on
- 45:47Speaker 8: my end. I'm having little issues with a change of
- 45:50Speaker 8: address situation. Oh sure, customer service was great and they
- 45:55Speaker 8: sent them out right away.
- 45:56Speaker 10: And yeah, it's turned into quite the story.
- 46:01Speaker 2: Yeah, that's gonna be a story. That's gonna be a
- 46:03Speaker 2: hunting camp story for the Ages.
- 46:07Speaker 10: Yeah, luckily everything turned out good.
- 46:09Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm glad.
- 46:10Speaker 2: I'm glad to hear that you got back out there.
- 46:13Speaker 2: That was my next question is what the rest of
- 46:15Speaker 2: your season looks like. So I'm glad to hear that
- 46:17Speaker 2: you got back out there and that you weren't more
- 46:20Speaker 2: seriously injured by this. It's very lucky that you guys
- 46:24Speaker 2: have the medical training that you do, because I think
- 46:26Speaker 2: had some other folks been in that same situation, cooler's
- 46:30Speaker 2: heads would not have prevailed.
- 46:32Speaker 10: Yeah, I'm very thankful for that background.
- 46:37Speaker 2: Lauren, Thanks for thanks for sharing your story with us.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Good luck out there this fall. And yeah, incredible story
- 46:45Speaker 2: and glad you're okay, And please reach out should anything
- 46:50Speaker 2: like this happen again fingers crossed it doesn't, but please
- 46:54Speaker 2: please reach out and and yeah, it's great to chat
- 46:57Speaker 2: with you.
- 46:58Speaker 10: Sounds great. Thank you guys for having me on.
- 47:00Speaker 2: Thanks Lauren, good luck.
- 47:03Speaker 3: Oh brutal.
- 47:05Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm still tense. My body's tense.
- 47:08Speaker 3: Ye.
- 47:09Speaker 2: I knew a friend of my sorry, a mother of
- 47:13Speaker 2: one of my friends growing up, had a similar deal
- 47:16Speaker 2: riding a quad through the woods and had a stick
- 47:20Speaker 2: right basically ride up the side of her knee and enter.
- 47:23Speaker 4: Her leg after getting flipped up from a tire.
- 47:26Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, that's uh g, that's super gnarly.
- 47:32Speaker 4: I think we meant to do this, but it's kind
- 47:34Speaker 4: of an ironic show. With Halloween tomorrow, we got a
- 47:37Speaker 4: lot of gore and murder and you.
- 47:39Speaker 2: Know, yeah Halloween esque that we did not think about that,
- 47:41Speaker 2: but man, those pictures are happy. Halloween make me shaky.
- 47:46Speaker 3: Do you need a sip of water? Are you good?
- 47:49Speaker 3: You need a second?
- 47:50Speaker 8: No?
- 47:50Speaker 2: Okay, No, I'm good, I'm good. It's the responsibility of
- 47:54Speaker 2: the host to keep this thing moving. But I am
- 47:57Speaker 2: affected by that story, and I'm really glad that they
- 48:01Speaker 2: sent out those replacement based layers. I figured I could
- 48:03Speaker 2: be setting us up for tremendous embarrassment as a company,
- 48:06Speaker 2: and I was gonna offer to send them myself. Go
- 48:08Speaker 2: down to the store and you know, I use the
- 48:10Speaker 2: employee discount and all that. But good on first light.
- 48:13Speaker 4: Hey, great customer service.
- 48:18Speaker 5: Hard pivot.
- 48:19Speaker 2: Going to try to regain my composure as we get
- 48:23Speaker 2: into another Throwback Thursday, and there's no musical.
- 48:28Speaker 3: There is stream Yards having some issues to they We
- 48:31Speaker 3: got to nineteen seventy four.
- 48:35Speaker 8: Roll back.
- 48:36Speaker 3: I can't believe it.
- 48:38Speaker 10: Did I mentioned Steven Ronnie our old ash.
- 48:45Speaker 5: For today's Throwback Thursday. We've got a real treat for you, folks.
- 48:50Speaker 2: We each brought in our first bull elk and we're
- 48:55Speaker 2: going to share those stories. Maybe we should go and
- 48:59Speaker 2: order of trophy size. Oh, because I didn't realize we
- 49:03Speaker 2: were bringing our first six points.
- 49:06Speaker 6: But seth for those of you who weren't in this
- 49:08Speaker 6: room before the show started. This is all Randall has
- 49:10Speaker 6: been able to talk about for the last hour.
- 49:12Speaker 5: Yeah, I thought we were bringing in raghorns. You, I
- 49:16Speaker 5: can't help things. Leaning up against the wall to my armpit.
- 49:19Speaker 3: Says like, I can't help it.
- 49:21Speaker 5: My first bulls great bull.
- 49:24Speaker 2: No, it's a good bull. It's a great first bull.
- 49:27Speaker 2: But I didn't realize that we were going to do
- 49:28Speaker 2: this thing. So Seth, why don't you tell the story
- 49:31Speaker 2: of your first bullet.
- 49:32Speaker 3: It's not a huge six point, No it's not. It's
- 49:35Speaker 3: just the biggest barely.
- 49:36Speaker 5: It's barely a six point just so everybody was.
- 49:39Speaker 7: The camera wide enough to get this, just just barely, Seth,
- 49:45Speaker 7: this is this is my first Yeah, let me up
- 49:47Speaker 7: to the mill.
- 49:49Speaker 3: Thank you. This is my first bull that I ever killed.
- 49:53Speaker 7: And it just so happened that this was back in
- 49:56Speaker 7: twenty sixteen, my first hunting season in Montana. How old
- 50:01Speaker 7: were you, I don't know, twenty six, twenty five.
- 50:08Speaker 5: Five again young buck.
- 50:10Speaker 7: But yeah, so I had just recently become a resident
- 50:14Speaker 7: in twenty sixteen. I went to FWP headquarters in Helenum
- 50:18Speaker 7: and picked up my tags, and then the next day
- 50:20Speaker 7: I went up to a hunting spot that I had
- 50:23Speaker 7: been scouting.
- 50:25Speaker 5: Wait, this was literally the day after you bought your tag.
- 50:27Speaker 7: Yeah, amazing, and was deer hunting. I was deer hunting
- 50:33Speaker 7: the spot that I had been been looking at some
- 50:35Speaker 7: some big deer at and uh, you know, I just
- 50:38Speaker 7: happened to come across this guy that was bedded in
- 50:40Speaker 7: some willows way way back in there.
- 50:43Speaker 3: I was with good buddy Rick Hutton.
- 50:45Speaker 5: Shout out Rick, Rick.
- 50:48Speaker 3: So yeah, I ended up shooting this bull at last light.
- 50:51Speaker 7: And I, you know, very new to elk hunting at
- 50:56Speaker 7: this point in my life, and very new to Western
- 50:59Speaker 7: hunting in general, and didn't really.
- 51:02Speaker 3: Totally know what I was doing. So we gutted this thing.
- 51:07Speaker 3: And we were six miles from the.
- 51:09Speaker 7: Truck, So instead of cutting it up that night in
- 51:14Speaker 7: the dark, we just gutted it and got the guts
- 51:16Speaker 7: away from it because we were in some grizz country,
- 51:20Speaker 7: thick thick griz country. In fact, every time we pretty
- 51:24Speaker 7: much scouted that area we ran into grizzlies. But yeah,
- 51:28Speaker 7: I gutted this thing, rolled the guts down the hill
- 51:30Speaker 7: quite a ways away from it, and we left to
- 51:33Speaker 7: come back in the morning to cut it up, which
- 51:37Speaker 7: you know, in hindsight, I probably would have just stayed
- 51:39Speaker 7: there and cut the thing up.
- 51:40Speaker 2: Yeah, but just not shot at six miles deep.
- 51:43Speaker 3: Yeah that too.
- 51:45Speaker 7: But that night, so we started hiking back to the truck,
- 51:51Speaker 7: and it was well after dark, and the wind picked
- 51:54Speaker 7: up and there was like a cold front coming in
- 51:57Speaker 7: that night, and so you know, Rick and I we
- 52:01Speaker 7: were hustling to get out of there. We kind of
- 52:03Speaker 7: stripped down to our bass layers, you know, so we
- 52:06Speaker 7: weren't getting all sweaty. And got back to the truck
- 52:10Speaker 7: and Rick was acting real weird. I couldn't figure out
- 52:14Speaker 7: what was going on with him. He could like barely talk.
- 52:16Speaker 7: He was kind of drooling a little bit, saying he
- 52:19Speaker 7: was real hot. Well, you know, later we figured out
- 52:23Speaker 7: that Rick had gotten hypothermia walking.
- 52:27Speaker 4: Out of there dangerous.
- 52:28Speaker 5: So yeah, that was that was my first experience, quite
- 52:31Speaker 5: an adventure.
- 52:32Speaker 7: With hypothermia, like seeing that for the first time, and
- 52:36Speaker 7: you know, also my first experience killing a six point
- 52:39Speaker 7: elk beautiful.
- 52:41Speaker 3: So yeah, that's the story of this guy.
- 52:43Speaker 5: Thank you, Seth.
- 52:44Speaker 6: Yeah, don't you think we should have started from the
- 52:46Speaker 6: smallest to the largest. I think that would have been
- 52:48Speaker 6: like a more kind of satisfying progression.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Yeah, I didn't think about that.
- 52:53Speaker 3: That's fine.
- 52:54Speaker 4: First balls, they're all the same size and memory.
- 52:56Speaker 5: This time next year when we do this again, well
- 53:00Speaker 5: do it that way.
- 53:01Speaker 4: So let's see if we're going in order here.
- 53:03Speaker 2: I think years bigger than mine?
- 53:05Speaker 4: Is it?
- 53:05Speaker 2: No?
- 53:06Speaker 5: Oh, you want me to go, I'll go, I'll go,
- 53:08Speaker 5: I'll go.
- 53:08Speaker 4: Oh, I'm the smallest.
- 53:10Speaker 2: Please let me go.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Let me go, Randon, why don't you go?
- 53:12Speaker 2: All right?
- 53:14Speaker 3: It might be close, it's gonna be they're really sick.
- 53:16Speaker 3: Your points are longer.
- 53:17Speaker 4: Hey, thanks?
- 53:21Speaker 5: What if my head set back on? This is a
- 53:23Speaker 5: weird way to hold a bowl.
- 53:24Speaker 4: Very well done, European mounts, I will say.
- 53:27Speaker 2: Yeah, this is my first bull. It's not going for
- 53:35Speaker 2: the listening audience. I'm having trouble fitting it in the
- 53:38Speaker 2: frame with me, not because it's large, but because I
- 53:42Speaker 2: don't have good sense of my spatial awareness. So this,
- 53:48Speaker 2: this bowl I killed in the fall of twenty eighteen,
- 53:56Speaker 2: I believe twenty eighteen, twenty seventeen. It was the day
- 54:01Speaker 2: after Thanksgiving, and my brother in law was in town
- 54:08Speaker 2: from Seattle, and he's very interested in hunting, and he's
- 54:11Speaker 2: watch his metater and.
- 54:14Speaker 5: Never been out hunting.
- 54:15Speaker 2: And I had a white tail b tag for a
- 54:19Speaker 2: unit west of Missoula, and we thought, well, why don't
- 54:23Speaker 2: we take Jason out in the morning and shoot a
- 54:27Speaker 2: white tail dough and show him what hunting's all about,
- 54:30Speaker 2: you know.
- 54:31Speaker 5: And so we drive in.
- 54:33Speaker 2: There and it's basically like a forest service road and
- 54:37Speaker 2: we'd hike down to the river and there's just some
- 54:39Speaker 2: openings and see a lot of deer in there. And
- 54:42Speaker 2: we passed a truck on the way in, because it's
- 54:46Speaker 2: the day after Thanksgiving. We passed a truck that's got
- 54:48Speaker 2: like eight dudes in it, you know, from ten years
- 54:51Speaker 2: old to eighty years old, and they're like three hundred
- 54:55Speaker 2: yards from where we're parking. We're like, all right, I
- 54:57Speaker 2: guess you know, we'll get this side. We start walking
- 55:01Speaker 2: from the truck, I see a white tailed dough.
- 55:05Speaker 5: Phil cue the picture. Oh absolutely sorry, Sorry God, I
- 55:08Speaker 5: did this again to you?
- 55:09Speaker 3: Oh no, You're fine. Is this is on me? Randall.
- 55:12Speaker 3: I'm the engineer back here. I should be prepared for everything.
- 55:14Speaker 2: So Sydney. Sydney started to take a picture. I'm about
- 55:18Speaker 2: I'm setting up to shoot this white tailed dough and
- 55:22Speaker 2: next photo.
- 55:23Speaker 3: Oh I believe that was the next photo.
- 55:26Speaker 2: Yeah, no, you did it right, I just it's my
- 55:28Speaker 2: mistake again.
- 55:29Speaker 3: A big dough down.
- 55:31Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 55:31Speaker 2: So I'm setting up to shoot this dough and it
- 55:35Speaker 2: wanders behind a little like finger ridge that's you know,
- 55:38Speaker 2: like thirty feet tall, just like a little finger going
- 55:41Speaker 2: down to the to the river bottom. And so I said, oh, perfect,
- 55:45Speaker 2: let's drop down there. We'll walk up that finger and
- 55:47Speaker 2: she'll walk up the other side, because she was just
- 55:50Speaker 2: kind of feeding up. And so we start walking up
- 55:52Speaker 2: this finger and another dough squorts past, and I think
- 55:57Speaker 2: to myself, oh, I should every now and then check
- 56:00Speaker 2: over my right shoulder instead of just locking in on
- 56:03Speaker 2: the left side.
- 56:03Speaker 5: We're expecting this dough.
- 56:04Speaker 2: I'm like, I should check over my right shoulder just
- 56:06Speaker 2: to make sure nothing's over there. And we get a
- 56:10Speaker 2: little ways up and I look over my right shoulder
- 56:13Speaker 2: and I see this big tan body and I'm thinking, oh,
- 56:17Speaker 2: that's that looks like the color of an elk's body.
- 56:19Speaker 2: And then I look again and I'm like, oh, that
- 56:22Speaker 2: looks like the color of an elk's neck. And then
- 56:25Speaker 2: I realized there's antlers and this thing is bedded broadside
- 56:29Speaker 2: to me with just its face behind a tree, like
- 56:32Speaker 2: the tree was literally only covering its eye so it
- 56:35Speaker 2: didn't see us. It's probably at like fifty yards.
- 56:39Speaker 4: Wow, that's the little luck that it takes to oh man,
- 56:42Speaker 4: that you stopped, you know, and see.
- 56:44Speaker 2: And so Sydney, Sydney and Jason are standing next to
- 56:47Speaker 2: me and they're looking to the left and I hear
- 56:51Speaker 2: one of them.
- 56:51Speaker 5: Go, oh, there's the dough and I just go shut them.
- 56:55Speaker 2: You know, and uh. And they have no idea what's happening.
- 56:58Speaker 2: And then I start shooting and I shoot this thing.
- 57:02Speaker 2: It stands up, two other bulls run off. I shoot
- 57:05Speaker 2: it again and it flips over. That shot. Well, well,
- 57:08Speaker 2: so Phil, go back, go back, go back, go back,
- 57:12Speaker 2: go back, go back.
- 57:15Speaker 5: Okay, next slide.
- 57:16Speaker 2: So Sydney's like, Sydney's like, oh my god, Randall just
- 57:20Speaker 2: shot his first bull and like, I'm standing here. I
- 57:24Speaker 2: just watched the whole thing. And so she started taking
- 57:26Speaker 2: photos of me, like walking down to it. And you'll
- 57:29Speaker 2: see in this photo that it's lying It's on a
- 57:31Speaker 2: steep slope, its head is kind of tucked under it,
- 57:34Speaker 2: and it's lying there. And we walk down to it.
- 57:37Speaker 2: And then you'll see in the next photo, all of
- 57:39Speaker 2: a sudden it's getting up. And so this thing, as
- 57:43Speaker 2: I approached it, it started like donkey kicking, and like
- 57:46Speaker 2: I said, it's head was wrapped under it. So all
- 57:48Speaker 2: of a sudden it flips itself up and over like
- 57:51Speaker 2: rodeo clown. I am ten feet away from it, and
- 57:55Speaker 2: it starts running away, and I'm thinking, it's going to
- 57:58Speaker 2: run to this truck with these other dudes. And I'm
- 58:02Speaker 2: just thinking, my first bull is going to be shot
- 58:04Speaker 2: by an entire extended clan and they're gonna have a
- 58:08Speaker 2: great Thanksgiving Day and I'm gonna have the bitterest Thanksgiving
- 58:12Speaker 2: weekend of all time. So then I start shooting it again.
- 58:15Speaker 2: So Phil, if you'll proceed, So we have this whole
- 58:18Speaker 2: sequence of photos of it standing up again.
- 58:22Speaker 3: You shoulder your rifle.
- 58:23Speaker 2: You see see rifles shouldered, and I'm like twenty yards
- 58:27Speaker 2: away from it.
- 58:28Speaker 3: Next one, you look closer than that.
- 58:30Speaker 5: Next one, Oh, I mean I was.
- 58:32Speaker 2: I was afraid it was gonna kick me when it
- 58:33Speaker 2: initially started freaking out. Next one, he's off. Next one
- 58:40Speaker 2: finally go after like on my last the last round
- 58:45Speaker 2: in the magazine, I mean, he ran to the bottom
- 58:49Speaker 2: of hill and just stood there and I shot him
- 58:51Speaker 2: again and finally tipped over and walked down there and
- 58:55Speaker 2: pretty shocked by the whole thing.
- 58:56Speaker 5: This is like at nine o'clock. You can see my
- 58:59Speaker 5: face here.
- 59:01Speaker 2: We're in a lot of sick in that photo.
- 59:02Speaker 5: But you'll you will see an f HF bino harness
- 59:06Speaker 5: in a.
- 59:07Speaker 2: First light blaze orange watching this. It's fine, No, it's fine.
- 59:10Speaker 2: It shouldn't be a big deal now.
- 59:13Speaker 5: And then the next photo that's me and Sydney.
- 59:18Speaker 2: It was a very cool, cool thing to have her
- 59:21Speaker 2: there for it. And then uh, next photo, we have
- 59:25Speaker 2: a little family, a little family pack out. And then
- 59:29Speaker 2: we went to the old U Thomas Marbar in Missoula,
- 59:34Speaker 2: watched some some football that's great, had a few cold ones.
- 59:39Speaker 4: Lovely you're making glue with those hooks or.
- 59:41Speaker 5: Yeah, you know that's that was a mistake.
- 59:45Speaker 2: Like I said, ladies and gentlemen, we're talking.
- 59:53Speaker 5: Jannis Ptelis just walked into the studio. Jannis ptell Us.
- 59:58Speaker 5: Tell the folks how you're doing.
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: I'm pretty hungry, Randa, we have a lunch date right now.
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: Oh my god, we're running over on time. It is,
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: so you're literally interrupted the live show to tell us
- 1:00:08Speaker 2: that you want to go eat lunch. Now. Yeah, well,
- 1:00:14Speaker 2: we've got one story left here and it's Corey Culkins.
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: We're telling the story of our first bull, elk Oh.
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: I'm here to listen, right, Here's here's my first ball.
- 1:00:23Speaker 5: I was a dandy fourteen or fifteen dandy.
- 1:00:27Speaker 4: I can't quite remember exactly what year this was, but
- 1:00:30Speaker 4: I think it was a sophomore in high school potentially. Anyway,
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: Southern Montana opening day.
- 1:00:38Speaker 3: I do remember we.
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: Glassed up Elk the night before, which back then opener
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: was on a Sunday. Anybody miss those days? And so Saturday,
- 1:00:49Speaker 4: I remember glassing up or Herd Elk. My dad and
- 1:00:51Speaker 4: I walked up in the dark by trying to get
- 1:00:54Speaker 4: you know, ahead of everybody else that we could see
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: rolling in with their campers. And we get up on
- 1:00:58Speaker 4: this saddle and then looking down below us just see
- 1:01:01Speaker 4: headlamps galore coming up towards us, you know. So we're like, okay,
- 1:01:05Speaker 4: well we should be in the right spot. This is,
- 1:01:06Speaker 4: you know, a few hundred yards away from everybody else. Yeah,
- 1:01:11Speaker 4: of course sun comes up elkra Gone. So we're kind
- 1:01:15Speaker 4: of bumming. We hike up above the saddle to the
- 1:01:18Speaker 4: top of the hill and lo and behold, here comes
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: this lone bowl tongue just dragging as if he got
- 1:01:24Speaker 4: bumped by somebody else. I want to say, it's first
- 1:01:27Speaker 4: forty five minutes of light.
- 1:01:29Speaker 2: And with you.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: He walked right up to me.
- 1:01:32Speaker 4: Three hundred excuse me, this was a thirty six I
- 1:01:35Speaker 4: want to say, like sixty yards away, dumped him one shot.
- 1:01:40Speaker 4: Fantastic and yeah, I was pretty tickled, pretty blown away.
- 1:01:43Speaker 4: And as we were packing him out, took multiple trips
- 1:01:47Speaker 4: to get him out, just my dad and I, and
- 1:01:49Speaker 4: we passed this young gall who had harvested a giant
- 1:01:52Speaker 4: six point right by the trailhead. Oh, they've admitted they
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: got a late start, you know, and came up after
- 1:01:58Speaker 4: first light and everybody he had walked right by this
- 1:02:01Speaker 4: stud six point bowl in the dark.
- 1:02:03Speaker 5: You've always got it, You've always got a chance.
- 1:02:05Speaker 4: Yeah, And so we got to see that on the
- 1:02:07Speaker 4: way out. But yeah, then if I remember, my dad
- 1:02:10Speaker 4: shot a spike later that day, back when you can
- 1:02:11Speaker 4: shoot spikes around here.
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: Very cool.
- 1:02:14Speaker 5: So yeah, thanks for sharing.
- 1:02:16Speaker 3: That's a great, great, great day of el coming. Yeah,
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: and Seth really quick, since you went through the trouble
- 1:02:20Speaker 3: of sending it to me.
- 1:02:22Speaker 2: Oh handsome young buck at twenty five years old. He's
- 1:02:27Speaker 2: got a full mustache. Still, that's really nice way to go.
- 1:02:31Speaker 3: A BHA sticker on his h Yeah.
- 1:02:33Speaker 5: On the r you're walking the walk and talking the talk.
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: And I was wearing the first Light back then too,
- 1:02:39Speaker 3: and wearing.
- 1:02:41Speaker 2: Not all of us were doing side work for First
- 1:02:43Speaker 2: Light of the FACHEF and getting free stuff all the time.
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: No I bought that stuff.
- 1:02:48Speaker 4: Okay, I would have been wearing some Walmart special.
- 1:02:52Speaker 2: That brings us to the end of today's program. We've
- 1:02:55Speaker 2: got a little bit of time for listener feedback.
- 1:02:58Speaker 6: I know Ganis is hungry. I will the first question
- 1:03:01Speaker 6: I will bring up is her next gun, And it says,
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: why is Gianni's not in Wisconsin?
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: Oh Capitol? Oh good question.
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: That is a great question. My cameras are blowing up.
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: Everybody's killing deer in Wisconsin. And I'm not going for
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: until a week from Friday. I'm going on the seventh
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: because I'm gonna be at the Milwaukee Meeter store on
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: the seventh for meet and greet. So if you're anywhere
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: near Milwaukee, you've already killed a boxing. You don't need
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: to be in the woods on the seventh in the evening.
- 1:03:26Speaker 1: Come and see me at the Meat Eater store in Milwaukee. Yeah,
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: I'll be hounting on the eighth, Saturday morning.
- 1:03:32Speaker 7: In my opinion, Yanni, the eighth is the best day
- 1:03:34Speaker 7: out of the year to be in the woods.
- 1:03:36Speaker 3: So you'll be there. I'll be there. That's great, Phil,
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: What else.
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: We got here?
- 1:03:40Speaker 3: Spencer asks? What's for lunch?
- 1:03:43Speaker 2: What is for lunch?
- 1:03:44Speaker 3: Bothman Market in Delhi? Great? Your choice?
- 1:03:47Speaker 5: You mean the same place with you yesterday?
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: Favorite fantastic Crank says that they shot a buck while
- 1:03:53Speaker 6: listening to the podcast.
- 1:03:54Speaker 5: Oh that's awesome.
- 1:03:56Speaker 3: Way to go.
- 1:03:56Speaker 2: Send that in.
- 1:03:57Speaker 5: We'll air it the next time I host.
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: How did you manage to do that?
- 1:04:02Speaker 2: Actually, maybe we'll even have Crank as a guest Crank
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Email radio at the meat Eater dot com.
- 1:04:08Speaker 3: Is that right?
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: Is that right?
- 1:04:09Speaker 3: PHILM? Yeah, that sounds right. Yeah.
- 1:04:11Speaker 2: Let's let's uh, let's let's hear the story of shooting
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: a buck.
- 1:04:14Speaker 5: Well listening to Meat Eater Radio Live.
- 1:04:17Speaker 4: My guess is from the truck, maybe a big old
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: deer boy.
- 1:04:20Speaker 5: Let's let him tell his story him or her. Oh,
- 1:04:22Speaker 5: it's just yeah.
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: Mystery Canadian Hunter twenty one. A question for Randall. You
- 1:04:25Speaker 6: just said, oh, to be twenty five again. I'm turning
- 1:04:27Speaker 6: twenty five in a few months. What should I be
- 1:04:29Speaker 6: planning for to make the most out of being twenty five?
- 1:04:32Speaker 5: I like to look at that bridge and your profile picture.
- 1:04:35Speaker 3: I bet a catfish lives under That's what I was thinking.
- 1:04:37Speaker 3: That's the first thing I thought one or two if.
- 1:04:40Speaker 5: I was twenty five again. Mmmm, that's a great question.
- 1:04:46Speaker 4: Go for a big hike your forty year old celphone?
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, think about think about a place where you'd
- 1:04:51Speaker 2: be like, there's nobody forty years old. They're gonna be
- 1:04:54Speaker 2: here el hunting And then I'd go.
- 1:04:56Speaker 4: There, Yeah, there you go, go do something stupid.
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: And I'd just eat it everything.
- 1:05:01Speaker 6: Nate says, how early do I start monitoring questions for Chat?
- 1:05:04Speaker 6: Can I dump them before the waiting music even starts? Yes,
- 1:05:06Speaker 6: you can get them in early.
- 1:05:08Speaker 3: I can see him. It makes my job easier.
- 1:05:11Speaker 6: Actually, Phil doesn't lose anything. Mo gore our guy. Yesterday
- 1:05:15Speaker 6: I watched the Media or Muzzleloader episode. Steve mentioned that
- 1:05:17Speaker 6: Seth is really skilled with it. But my question is,
- 1:05:19Speaker 6: have randall Er Corey ever had the chance to harvest
- 1:05:21Speaker 6: game with a muzzle?
- 1:05:22Speaker 4: Nope, No, I'm usually tagged out by then A.
- 1:05:28Speaker 6: Let's see Laurie. I don't think there's any bird people
- 1:05:31Speaker 6: in this room. But Laurie's asking what your go to
- 1:05:34Speaker 6: grouse slayer is.
- 1:05:35Speaker 3: Ooh, shotgun. You might be asking for more specifics, but you.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: Know mine's an arrow with a Judo point. Typically in
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: archery season chasing elk twelve gage twenty twos are great too, though.
- 1:05:49Speaker 5: Twenty twos are great.
- 1:05:50Speaker 2: The only grouse I've killed have been with twenty two
- 1:05:53Speaker 2: caliber pistols.
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Great well, Joannis is looking at his phone. He looks,
- 1:05:57Speaker 3: he looks starved.
- 1:05:58Speaker 5: How many more listener questions? One more? Let's do one more?
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: One more?
- 1:06:04Speaker 6: I really, Aaron says, I recently briand a turkey breast
- 1:06:06Speaker 6: for twenty four hours, but it came out too salty.
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: How long do y'all Brian, Johnny.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: This is a good question for you. Ah yeah, it
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: sounds like that was too long. I believe it in
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: the Meat Eater cookbook it's like six to eight. If
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: that happens, you can desalt a Brian turkey breast by
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: just putting it into just plain cold water, and it'll
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: actually suck through osmosis the salt will come back out
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: into the water. But yeah, I guess you could. You
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: could check it by just cutting a little sliver off
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: the turkey breast next time, frying it real quick and
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: eating it and seeing how salty it is.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: Well, that was the most substantive thing that's been said
- 1:06:46Speaker 2: in the past sixty six minutes, So I think that's
- 1:06:51Speaker 2: a good place to wrap up. Corey Seth as always
- 1:06:56Speaker 2: a true pleasure fill the engineer. Wonderful job will streamline
- 1:06:59Speaker 2: our us this next week, So we hickups folks out there,
- 1:07:03Speaker 2: We thank you for listening and we will see you
- 1:07:06Speaker 2: next week.
- 1:07:07Speaker 3: Happy hunting, Thanks guys, Happy Halloween.
