Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: All right, let's hear some more from log Worn's basketball
- 0:02head coach Rodney Terry. We heard him talking about the
- 0:05construction of his team. This was a question that Brian Davis,
- 0:10our friend Brian Davis, asked him about sod Do you
- 0:13have to have a senior or grad transfer point guard
- 0:20in today's age of college basketball?
- 0:23Speaker 2: Can you can you sign a freshman point guard? I mean,
- 0:28he got to be elite, you know what I mean.
- 0:30I mean, I mean again, you know what's elite this
- 0:33day in time. You know, even the best young players
- 0:36are going to have growing pains, and the most important
- 0:39thing with young players is just being consistent. We're wanting
- 0:43to be consistent every day, even some older players, just
- 0:45being consistent.
- 0:46Speaker 3: With what you do every day.
- 0:48Speaker 2: But we have the luxuryer having older, older guards that
- 0:51hand the ball for us. Right now, Jordan Pope played,
- 0:54you know, he's played two seasons.
- 0:55Speaker 3: He's in his third season right now.
- 0:56Speaker 2: So the junior's played a lot of minutes at the point,
- 0:59you know, Junior Larry, you know he's in.
- 1:01Speaker 3: His fifth season. He's played.
- 1:02Speaker 2: He played a ton of basketball in a lot of minutes.
- 1:05Speaker 3: You know. In distributing the basketball initiating offense, so they're
- 1:09they're older guards.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Trey Johnson will initiate initiate for us as well, because
- 1:13all our guards have to be.
- 1:14Speaker 3: The initiate force.
- 1:15Speaker 2: You know, Kenda Weaver has done a great job making
- 1:18decisions with the basketball as well. We don't just have
- 1:21one guy dominate the ball for us, our forwards bringing
- 1:24the ball up the floor. They have to be able
- 1:26to initiate offense sports as well, and we we drill
- 1:30that so they that make it come natural to those
- 1:32guys in the game.
- 1:33Speaker 3: You know, Art think gets the rebound, he can bring
- 1:35it up and hit ahead. You know, Jason Kin hit ahead.
- 1:38Speaker 2: I think the easier teams to guard is if you
- 1:41only have one guy can handle basketball.
- 1:42Speaker 3: So we need multiple ball handlers, multiple.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Guys that can that can initiate offense for us. And
- 1:48that's that's challenging for a team to deal with defensively.
- 1:51But you know, when if we take a point guard
- 1:54that's a freshman, you know, man, we can you know,
- 1:57we'll we'll figure that out a little bit.
- 1:59Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:59Speaker 2: We got too pretty good ones right now, so we
- 2:01feel good about that.
- 2:02Speaker 1: So after several months of the guys and individual workouts, uh,
- 2:06and drills going against one another. And then now with
- 2:09just a week in on the total team practices, does
- 2:15Rodney Terry get the sense that this team is ready
- 2:17to stop going up against one another and try to
- 2:20take on somebody else?
- 2:21Speaker 2: Well, this is a this is a very competitive group,
- 2:24and we're playing a lot earlier than we did with
- 2:27last year's group.
- 2:28Speaker 3: You know. Right now, this group right now, we're.
- 2:30Speaker 2: Cause you're fighting time when you put a new group together,
- 2:32you know, that's the biggest thing, guys getting familiar with
- 2:34one another. You know, we're changing jerseys, letting different guys
- 2:38play with each other, you know.
- 2:40Speaker 3: In my mind, again, I think in the.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Last two years is what's made us really good is
- 2:44we've had you know, guys up to eight guys, nine
- 2:46guys that could start for us.
- 2:48Speaker 3: You know. And again I think we're in that same
- 2:49position right now. We could have eight, you know, nine
- 2:52guys that could that could start for us, you know,
- 2:53and stuff.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So, Uh, I think that versatility, uh, you know, gives
- 2:58us an opportunity to play earlier.
- 3:00Speaker 3: Get more familiar with each other.
- 3:01Speaker 2: But right now I think there's super competitive against Orange
- 3:03and Gray right now.
- 3:04Speaker 3: Really stuff, So we're able to put.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Everybody all in one color, then we're all together.
- 3:09Speaker 3: I think we'll be competitive as well. It's a pretty
- 3:10competitive group.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Roddy's referring to the fact that he's got the group
- 3:13split into those who wear orange jerseys and those who
- 3:16wear great ones. And that's what eve an orange against gray.
- 3:18When they all are wearing the same uniform color, they'll
- 3:21be effective when they get on the floor. He was
- 3:24asked about the leadership part of not having a Brock
- 3:28cunning him after six years in a Texas uniform. I
- 3:31think I saw yesterday from Rocky's starting a season. Is Holland,
- 3:34is it?
- 3:35Speaker 3: I think so?
- 3:36Speaker 1: He Holland or Belgium. I think it was one of
- 3:38the low countries. I think it was. I think Belgium. Okay, yeah,
- 3:42like I said, in Belgium, Holland, the low countries over there. Yeah,
- 3:45I think.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Don't ask me how to pronounce the team name. But
- 3:49he will be starting five year old. That's very good,
- 3:52very good.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Somebody asked Roddy, has anybody taking over Brocks stepped into
- 3:56his shoes in that kind of area.
- 3:59Speaker 2: Bill brock Brock was a guy that again played to win.
- 4:03He may win and plays for us. He's one of
- 4:06those guys that that over the latter part of his
- 4:08career really you know, took a lot of investment and
- 4:11leadership for our program as well. I think right now,
- 4:15you know, I think we're still emerging and who's gonna
- 4:18emerge in terms of being a leader on.
- 4:19Speaker 3: This team, Because the best teams we've.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Been around a player led, you know, and that coach led,
- 4:24The player led coach is gonna do his job, but
- 4:27but player led teams that really hold each other accountable.
- 4:32Speaker 3: You know, Kendall makes winning plays.
- 4:33Speaker 2: He plays with the kind of effort that that Brock
- 4:36Cunningham played with. I think Julie larry Will played with
- 4:38that same kind of energy and activity likewise and stuff.
- 4:41But you know, I can go right down the list
- 4:43of a number of guys that we got to take
- 4:45defense really personal and want to guard and defend at
- 4:47a high level.
- 4:48Speaker 1: And then he was also asked about Trey Johnson, the
- 4:51tremendous freshman coming in and he is kind of lit
- 4:55up to know. You just watch him in practice, you
- 4:57can see how explosion and dynamic he can be.
- 4:59Speaker 3: So he was asked how.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Dynamic and game changing has Trey Johnson been to this point.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Tray's been really good. You know.
- 5:06Speaker 2: I think just like any young player, you know, I
- 5:08think that the biggest adjustment for them and growth curve
- 5:11for them is just being consistent with what you bring
- 5:14every day in terms of your energy, your effort, you know,
- 5:18your body language. Those are the things that you really
- 5:20pay attention to with young players like like Trey, who's
- 5:23highly skilled.
- 5:24Speaker 3: He's a shot.
- 5:25Speaker 2: Maker, you know, He's a guy that over the course
- 5:27of summer, I think he's gotten better with his decision making,
- 5:29as will, and he'll be an initiate some offense sports too,
- 5:32as will.
- 5:32Speaker 3: But with young players, all of them.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I mean, go out down the list of all the
- 5:36guys we've had in this program that I've been a
- 5:37part of, whether it's KD you know, TJ Ford, you
- 5:41know DJ, any of those guys.
- 5:43Speaker 3: It's just being consistent with what you bring every day.
- 5:46All right.
- 5:46Speaker 1: There It is some more from Rodney Terry. We'll here's
- 5:49some more from him tomorrow as well. Updating the baseball
- 5:54Milwaukee's first three hitters, all batters, all reached that with
- 5:59a run scoring. It's one nothing, Brewers. They have the
- 6:01bases loaded, with one out against Louis Severino, and again
- 6:05the Orioles and Royals one nothing Kansas City with Baltimore
- 6:08batting in the bottom of the seventh inning, And in
- 6:11case you didn't hear it, Tiger's got three runs in
- 6:13the second and made it stand up. They held on
- 6:15got out of a bases loaded situation in the ninth
- 6:19to beat the Astros in Game one in Houston, three
- 6:21to one. We'll be back to wrap up today's program
- 6:23on sports Radio AM thirteen under the zone of the
- 6:25iHeartRadio app.
