- 0:03Speaker 1: It's the craig Way Show with the voice of the
- 0:06Speaker 1: Texas Longhorns and Hall of Fame Broadcasting Craig Way.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Some more input coming off the tex slide.
- 0:19Speaker 3: Somebody said, I think if we talking about Texas managed
- 0:23Speaker 3: to play clean football, meaning penalty free football, he said,
- 0:30Speaker 3: we will win these last few games, even if it's ugly.
- 0:33Speaker 3: The penalties killer Mojo. They did a better job, although
- 0:38Speaker 3: I still think they had seven penalties in the game
- 0:41Speaker 3: in the winter for Florida on Saturday, but they were
- 0:43Speaker 3: kind of spread out and rather inconsequential as opposed to
- 0:48Speaker 3: the Vanderbilt game where they really were impactful. I think
- 0:51Speaker 3: Sarks said that of the ten penalties they had, seven
- 0:56Speaker 3: were huge, and that the impacted drives and killed off
- 0:59Speaker 3: big plays and things like that that made that game
- 1:01Speaker 3: closer than a lot of folks have, you know, uh,
- 1:07Speaker 3: you know, figured it to be, and it could have
- 1:09Speaker 3: been much a wider.
- 1:12Speaker 2: Margin. But that's what happens.
- 1:14Speaker 3: If you make mistakes, whether it's turnovers or penalties, you
- 1:17Speaker 3: can keep a team in the football game, and it
- 1:18Speaker 3: happened in that one.
- 1:19Speaker 1: So I'm curious how many of those came with, you know,
- 1:22Speaker 1: the twos and threes up versus the first I remember
- 1:25Speaker 1: Kelvin Banks had a holding penalty in the first half.
- 1:27Speaker 2: He came on a first down.
- 1:28Speaker 1: But was there any other flags in the first half.
- 1:32Speaker 1: I don't I'm trying to think. I don't remember any.
- 1:35Speaker 1: The biggest thing to me was the false starts, yeah right,
- 1:38Speaker 1: and I thought Texas maybe they had something with the
- 1:40Speaker 1: second units. But I don't remember anything in the first
- 1:42Speaker 1: two quarters outside of that Kelvin Banks holding penalty.
- 1:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm trying to think. I uh, when there were
- 1:49Speaker 3: one laid hit on a quarterback might have been. I
- 1:52Speaker 3: can't remember for sure anyway, that most of those Your
- 1:56Speaker 3: point is is well made. Most of those came after
- 1:59Speaker 3: the issue had kind of already been said. But yes,
- 2:02Speaker 3: to his point, they're going to need to stay penalty free,
- 2:08Speaker 3: especially on the road, and I've done a good job
- 2:10Speaker 3: on the road other than that Vanderbilt game. I think
- 2:14Speaker 3: of the Oklahoma game, I think of the Michigan game
- 2:16Speaker 3: of staying away from from costly penalties.
- 2:20Speaker 2: So they're going to have to do a good job
- 2:22Speaker 2: on that.
- 2:22Speaker 3: On Saturday, somebody else pointing toward the Cowboys and Jerry
- 2:26Speaker 3: Jones's rock Bottom, Jerry rock bottom.
- 2:29Speaker 1: There was that illegal block in the back on Shalen
- 2:31Speaker 1: Gilbot on the trade more fumble in turn right.
- 2:34Speaker 3: Yeah, that nullified most of the return. The net wound
- 2:37Speaker 3: up being like five yards or three yards or something
- 2:40Speaker 3: like that.
- 2:41Speaker 1: And then there was also another legal block, remember like
- 2:45Speaker 1: on it was like that like Reid option play, Yeah,
- 2:48Speaker 1: and Gilbot came in and like it was kind of
- 2:50Speaker 1: like he It's one of those weird where the defend
- 2:53Speaker 1: the defensive players called.
- 2:54Speaker 2: For whole for the for the illegal chop block.
- 2:57Speaker 1: There's three right there in the first.
- 2:58Speaker 3: Half, and so I think that one was in the
- 3:01Speaker 3: second when Florida was making a drive, wasn't it.
- 3:04Speaker 1: It was second quarter, second to the second quarter. It
- 3:06Speaker 1: was on the drive where Gilbolt later came back and
- 3:10Speaker 1: at that third and fourteen.
- 3:11Speaker 2: That's right, that's right, very important on that one.
- 3:14Speaker 3: And then somebody else said that, hey, oh was her
- 3:17Speaker 3: man seatpalace. So the way the soccer team won was
- 3:19Speaker 3: amazing and clutch Texas Fike. Yeah, it was what a
- 3:24Speaker 3: beautifully placed ball, you know, that was just that's that's
- 3:29Speaker 3: what the Brits would say in soccer. Oh a lovely
- 3:32Speaker 3: ball that was that was laid up lots like exquisitely played.
- 3:38Speaker 2: That was knocked in on the header by Curly Montgomery.
- 3:41Speaker 2: I will ask, uh, we'll ask as Kelly about that tomorrow.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Trevor guzy face mask in the third quarter, Ye throw
- 3:48Speaker 1: up the four and then there was a Kim Williams
- 3:49Speaker 1: holding penalty when he came back in after the injuries.
- 3:53Speaker 3: So yeah, so they're five. They do want to clean
- 3:57Speaker 3: those up going into the rest of it, but they
- 4:01Speaker 3: did a better job than they had. It was all
- 4:03Speaker 3: part of a much better effort on that. A couple
- 4:06Speaker 3: more thoughts from Steve Sarkisian and the next one would
- 4:12Speaker 3: be about efficiency, working on efficient practices and practicing being
- 4:19Speaker 3: efficient on the drive and is that practiced during the week.
- 4:23Speaker 4: No, not necessarily like that.
- 4:25Speaker 5: We really made a point of emphasis and I talked
- 4:27Speaker 5: about it like playing good football on first and second down.
- 4:32Speaker 4: You know a lot of times we want to.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Talk about critical factors and stats of third down red area.
- 4:38Speaker 4: You know those things.
- 4:39Speaker 5: Well, sometimes it's football is a lot easier when you
- 4:42Speaker 5: don't have to play third down. And the reason you
- 4:44Speaker 5: don't have to play third down is you're really efficient
- 4:46Speaker 5: on first and second down. And so we're at our
- 4:49Speaker 5: best when we're like that. Now, you have to minimize
- 4:52Speaker 5: the self inflicted wounds, right, the false starts, the penalties,
- 4:55Speaker 5: the negative plays. But when we can play efficient football
- 4:59Speaker 5: and move the ball forward on first and second down,
- 5:02Speaker 5: generally that bodes well for us, and that's when we
- 5:05Speaker 5: can start to create some of those explosives.
- 5:06Speaker 4: So but but no, we don't.
- 5:08Speaker 5: Practice it per se, but in reality, that's really what
- 5:11Speaker 5: we're doing every day.
- 5:13Speaker 3: This has been brought up several times, the downfield blocking
- 5:17Speaker 3: that the Longhorns have done with receivers. There was one that,
- 5:20Speaker 3: speaking of penalties, there was a penalty flag thrown it
- 5:22Speaker 3: first on Isaiah Bond, and then they picked up the
- 5:26Speaker 3: flag and said no, it was not an illegal downfield block.
- 5:29Speaker 3: But Sark was asked about how important it is to
- 5:32Speaker 3: be blocking downfield after after a catch, in helping guys
- 5:36Speaker 3: maximize the game.
- 5:37Speaker 5: Yeah, no, I think there's some there's some great things
- 5:40Speaker 5: to look at, Like, you know, the around Isaiah Bond,
- 5:44Speaker 5: Matthew Golden makes a really critical block against an unscouted look,
- 5:48Speaker 5: and then you go watch Ryan Niblet go block the corner.
- 5:51Speaker 5: You watch Cam Williams thirty yards downfield. You watch Gunner
- 5:55Speaker 5: Helm thirty yrs downfield. You watch Jake Major's forty yards
- 5:59Speaker 5: downfield blocking on that play. You watch the touchdown pass
- 6:03Speaker 5: to Golden there at the end of the first half.
- 6:05Speaker 5: You see Trey Wisner coming off from the opposite side
- 6:09Speaker 5: picking up a blitzer to give Quinn that time to
- 6:11Speaker 5: throw that ball to Matthew Golden. You see Jack Gibson's
- 6:15Speaker 5: run late in the game, and you watch Silas Bolden
- 6:18Speaker 5: block in a corner. You see Ryan Wingo blocking two
- 6:21Speaker 5: defenders so to give Jack that opportunity to score.
- 6:24Speaker 4: You look at the screen to Trey Wisner.
- 6:28Speaker 5: You'll see Kelvin Banks with an initial block off the edge.
- 6:31Speaker 5: You'll see You'll see Jake Majors, you see Cole Hudson
- 6:35Speaker 5: out in the open field block, and you see Gunner
- 6:37Speaker 5: Helm downfield. You'll see Jayden Blue running from across the
- 6:40Speaker 5: field trying to get a block. And so I think
- 6:42Speaker 5: that's the nature of this team right now. We're very selfless.
- 6:46Speaker 5: They love playing for one another. We've been talking about
- 6:50Speaker 5: it last week, preaching it all week. Eleven is one.
- 6:52Speaker 5: Eleven is one where we don't want eleven different players
- 6:55Speaker 5: on offense. We want one offensive team that plays together
- 6:59Speaker 5: as one and so we take a lot of pride
- 7:02Speaker 5: in that, and that's when our offense is at its best.
- 7:04Speaker 5: And I think it showed up probably in its best
- 7:07Speaker 5: kind of frame Saturday of us playing that type of football.
- 7:10Speaker 3: And one final comment from Sark and again about blocking
- 7:13Speaker 3: Trevor Goosby. We mentioned Gooseby had that had that face
- 7:17Speaker 3: mask call, but Goozby that was like the second play
- 7:21Speaker 3: he was in after Cameron when Hes went out with
- 7:22Speaker 3: the injury, and then he played really well after that.
- 7:24Speaker 3: So the depth on the offensive line was tested a
- 7:26Speaker 3: little bit. I've been fortunate that they haven't had, you know,
- 7:30Speaker 3: offensive line and key starting offensive line and go down
- 7:33Speaker 3: for significant amounts of time. And they had a little
- 7:37Speaker 3: bit of scare with Cam going out, but then he
- 7:39Speaker 3: came back in later. But Goosby played, you know, there
- 7:42Speaker 3: was that one penalty, but otherwise played.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Well at that right tackle spot.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And he was asked Sark was asked about Gooseby and
- 7:49Speaker 3: his development coming off the bench.
- 7:51Speaker 4: Yeah, no, I'm super pumped for Trevor. You know, he
- 7:55Speaker 4: he was.
- 7:56Speaker 5: A skinny, tall, skinny kid when he first got here,
- 7:59Speaker 5: and he is really worked it and developing his body
- 8:02Speaker 5: he's gotten with coach Beckton.
- 8:03Speaker 2: In the weight room.
- 8:05Speaker 5: He's worked hard with our with our dietitians of eating
- 8:08Speaker 5: the right stuff because he's always been extremely athletic and
- 8:12Speaker 5: he's always been very tough. I mean, he's got a
- 8:14Speaker 5: nasty streak about him, but now he's got the size
- 8:17Speaker 5: to kind of back it up. And I think the
- 8:20Speaker 5: development that he and coach Flood have put forth of
- 8:24Speaker 5: his ability to play really either tackle spot, left or
- 8:26Speaker 5: right tackle and given us the confidence to put him
- 8:29Speaker 5: in there to go in there and play. And he
- 8:31Speaker 5: wasn't perfect, and I didn't expect him to be, but
- 8:34Speaker 5: he's got a very very bright future ahead of him.
- 8:36Speaker 5: And I think a lot of it is kind of
- 8:38Speaker 5: internal drive that he has, but he's also got some
- 8:41Speaker 5: great measurables that that equate to being a really good player.
- 8:44Speaker 2: All Right.
- 8:44Speaker 3: So there it is. Comments from Sark will be back
- 8:47Speaker 3: to wrap up today's edition in the program on sports
- 8:49Speaker 3: Radio AM thirteen under the Zone
