- 0:10Right Jay Fallon then thanks for listening to the slippery slope
- 0:13so just quickly let's go over a story that came out last week a
- 0:16former police officer sent it to me The thing is I find
- 0:21frustrating and I've spoken about this numerous times
- 0:24there's obviously an issue there's obviously an issue and
- 0:28something needs. To change and QPS the
- 0:33organization the police service within Queensland I think it's
- 0:39you that needs to change it's you that needs to change the
- 0:43burden the onus is on the Queensland police service to
- 0:46change somehow because you can't just keep doing the same thing
- 0:49and expect a different result every time you cannot do it so
- 0:55let's get into the story quickly and I'll.
- 0:57You'll see why why I've got this point of view OK so this
- 1:01headline came out it was on the first of April so police shoot
- 1:06men during welfare check in Brisbane 's north so a 19 year
- 1:12old man being shot by police north of Brisbane after his
- 1:15mother called officers to conduct.
- 1:17A welfare check the issue is this has happened so many times
- 1:21in just recently so many times over the last couple of years
- 1:25This is why I'm saying police need to change their strategy we
- 1:30obviously have issues with mental health and you don't have
- 1:33the same kind of support systems that we used to have quite a few
- 1:38years ago now the system 's not handling it but police cannot
- 1:42just continue going to these jobs and doing them exactly the
- 1:45same way. This is part of the reason why I
- 1:48believe we've got such a a rise in police shooting shooting
- 1:54shooting members of the public because they're still going to
- 1:57these jobs and still doing the same thing going through the
- 2:00same processes and it doesn't work all we're seeing is more
- 2:04people. Being shot I think part of the
- 2:07problem also is the recruitment has gone the standards have gone
- 2:10down when it comes to the people that we're recruiting now I'm
- 2:13not I'm not saying this about these officers that are involved
- 2:16in this I do believe there is a correlation between standards
- 2:21being dropped in the recruitment process for the Queensland
- 2:25police service and the amount of shootings police involved
- 2:29shootings rising over the last couple of years and.
- 2:33Police need to the police service needs to stop burying
- 2:36their head in the sand when it comes to this and we'll go on
- 2:39with the story so police said officers were called to akebia
- 2:42street in Rana hills about 12:30 PM or attempting to speak with
- 2:45the man when an altercation occurred regional crime
- 2:48coordinator Andrew massingham OK said police would allege the man
- 2:55produced a large kitchen knife while speaking to officers on
- 2:58the lower level of the home. As a result there has been 2
- 3:02shots fired by one of the male officers he said Superintendent
- 3:05massingham said the man was struck twice in the abdomen
- 3:09officers provided first aid at the scene before he was taken to
- 3:12the royal Brisbane hospital in a critical condition
- 3:14Superintendent massingham said the call for assistance had come
- 3:18from the man 's mother. Who was present during the
- 3:21shooting and that the man had previously received mental
- 3:24health treatment mum is distressed she's traumatized he
- 3:27said now look again I'll say I'm not saying that the police did
- 3:31anything specifically wrong here I am saying that the police
- 3:35service needs to review how they handle these kinds of call outs
- 3:40because we're just seeing far too many end in this kind of
- 3:44scenario and? That's why I say you can't just
- 3:48keep going and doing the same thing again and again and expect
- 3:52a different result Superintendent massingham said a
- 3:56Taser was also deployed during the incident which will be the
- 3:59subject of an ethical standards command investigation Oh no yeah
- 4:04when they say this the Taser deployed will be the subject
- 4:09that probably means that the officer who deployed the Taser
- 4:12is going to get still called The Reg 11.
- 4:16Well they're probably going to get some paperwork because they
- 4:18probably they're they're going to be looking at going why on
- 4:21earth did you did you present a Taser and deploy a Taser when
- 4:27there was a knife a knife in front of you a man wielding a
- 4:30knife so that officer will probably actually get in trouble
- 4:33that's what I'm saying the timing of that in terms of when
- 4:37the shots were fired will be the subject of the ongoing
- 4:39investigation he said he said the officers had body worn
- 4:42cameras which were operating at the time of the shooting.
- 4:44Now if there are any officers out there listening to this and
- 4:47you can shed a bit more light on the issues of this because I
- 4:50think obviously things have changed since I left the service
- 4:52and especially since I left general duties so when I'm
- 4:56saying this about the Taser because when I was in general
- 4:58duties if you pull the Taser when someone had a knife you
- 5:02would actually get what they call back then a Reg 11 I don't
- 5:05think it's called Reg 11 anymore but you'd get paperwork written
- 5:09up against you because you shouldn't have done that.
- 5:13But it seems yeah so they're also they're going to be
- 5:16investigating when it was actually deployed and if it
- 5:18could have been deployed earlier is what it seems so if you've
- 5:21got any insights that you can you can put down right in the
- 5:24comments that 'd be very helpful so Superintendent massingham
- 5:28said the the police officer fired the shots was a first year
- 5:33constable my goodness it is traumatic for all involved and
- 5:38that young man is feeling and feeling it right now.
- 5:46OK so like I said this this is the issue we've had several just
- 5:51in the last year now I think it is definitely in the last couple
- 5:54of years first year constables pulling their weapon and
- 5:58shooting the Queensland police I'm not going to say anything
- 6:04it's the officer OK he's done what he's done.
- 6:07But the police service needs to review their processes when it
- 6:11comes to going to these types of jobs and like I said I firmly
- 6:19believe that we've had such a a rise in police involved
- 6:24shootings because we recruit we've lowered our standards of
- 6:27recruiting and we have officers who can't handle pressure who
- 6:32can't assess situations. You know you need to be able to
- 6:35assess assess each scenario extremely quickly and what else
- 6:42can you say I think we've dropped their standards and
- 6:45that's why we have so many shootings and I'm not saying
- 6:47anything yes this chap specifically but you have to
- 6:52look at. The broader picture we've got
- 6:55far more police shootings we've got all these people going all
- 6:58these police officers being called to jobs where it's a
- 7:01mental health issue and how many times does it end in the police
- 7:05shooting that person the police service needs to change the way
- 7:11they do business that's my opinion I am a former police
- 7:15officer and that is why I'm saying this my name is Jay
- 7:18Fallon thank you for listening to the slippery slope.
- 7:21They just. Fuel the
