- 1:54Speaker 7: We were working the day watch out a robbery detail.
- 1:55Speaker 7: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Chief of Detectives
- 1:57Speaker 7: Thad Brown. My name's Friday. We're on our way out
- 2:00Speaker 7: from the office and it was 11.13 a.m. when we
- 2:02Speaker 7: got to the corner of 7th Street and Sunset Boulevard.
- 2:04Speaker 2: The Black Dog Bar and Grill.
- 2:08Speaker 4: In the back.
- 2:08Speaker 8: Now.
- 2:08Speaker 5: Hi.
- 2:08Speaker 2: How are you?
- 2:11Speaker 4: Well, how will it be? Police officers.
- 2:14Speaker 2: Oh, cops, huh? That's right. This is Frank Smith. My
- 2:16Speaker 2: name's Friday.
- 2:16Speaker 4: How are you? Nick Thomas. I guess about last night, huh?
- 2:19Speaker 2: That's right. We'd like to go over a couple things
- 2:21Speaker 2: with you.
- 2:21Speaker 9: Sure.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Can I get you anything?
- 2:22Speaker 2: No.
- 2:23Speaker 4: Do you mind if I have a cup of coffee
- 2:24Speaker 4: while we talk?
- 2:25Speaker 2: No, go ahead. Okay.
- 2:29Speaker 9: Sure surprised me.
- 2:30Speaker 2: What's that?
- 2:31Speaker 9: Last night, I sure wasn't expecting it.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:33Speaker 9: You know, you read about things like that happening, but
- 2:35Speaker 9: you just never figure them happening to you.
- 2:37Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. Of course, you've been in the business as long
- 2:39Speaker 4: as I have.
- 2:40Speaker 9: You ought to expect it.
- 2:40Speaker 5: At least that's the way I figure it.
- 2:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Well, okay. What do you want to know?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Well, according to what you told the officers last night.
- 2:48Speaker 7: The man came in the place about 11.30, is that right?
- 2:50Speaker 4: That's right, 11.30.
- 2:50Speaker 2: You sure about the time?
- 2:51Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. You see, I always look at that newscaster, 11.15, 11.30. Mm-hmm.
- 2:54Speaker 5: He went off the air, and.
- 2:55Speaker 4: They just put up the card where it tells what
- 2:57Speaker 4: station it is, and this guy walked right in.
- 2:58Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 4: I can't stand him myself.
- 3:00Speaker 2: What? The newscaster.
- 3:01Speaker 4: I can't stand him. Me and the missus have gotten
- 3:03Speaker 4: some real bad beefs about him. Is that right? Oh, yeah.
- 3:05Speaker 4: She digs him, but I can't stand him myself. He's
- 3:07Speaker 4: a real no-good. Mm-hmm.
- 3:09Speaker 10: He's the kind of a guy where if some old
- 3:10Speaker 10: man spit in the sidewalk, he could build it up
- 3:11Speaker 10: so we should evacuate the whole city.
- 3:13Speaker 4: You know what I mean?
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so.
- 3:14Speaker 4: Oh, he's like that. Mm-hmm. He's a real no-good. Mm-hmm.
- 3:17Speaker 2: I wonder if you'd check this description of the two
- 3:18Speaker 2: men who held you up.
- 3:19Speaker 4: Sure. I know those two guys anyplace. Ever saw them again,
- 3:23Speaker 4: I'd sure know them.
- 3:23Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 3:24Speaker 9: Yeah, that's them.
- 3:25Speaker 4: The tall one and the fat one. That's them. I
- 3:26Speaker 4: know them anyplace. What'd they say to you? Well, hardly
- 3:29Speaker 4: nothing at all. Just walked up to the bar, leaned over,
- 3:31Speaker 4: and told me to hand over the money.
- 3:32Speaker 2: I see. Do you remember the exact words?
- 3:34Speaker 4: You mean the way they said it? Yeah. Well, let
- 3:37Speaker 4: me see.
- 3:37Speaker 5: I think it was, uh.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Okay, Mac, this is a stick-up. Do like we tell you,
- 3:41Speaker 4: you won't get hurt. Like that he talked.
- 3:43Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 3:44Speaker 4: Just give us the money, don't make any noise. Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 4: I did. Walked right back to the register, opened it up,
- 3:49Speaker 4: and handed over the loot.
- 3:50Speaker 2: What happened then?
- 3:51Speaker 4: Told me to keep quiet, and then they walked out
- 3:52Speaker 4: of the place.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Anybody else in here?
- 3:54Speaker 4: Oh, there was a couple of people up in front.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Did the thieves bother them?
- 3:57Speaker 4: No, they were just after the money in the register.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Other couple didn't even know there was anybody here until
- 4:01Speaker 4: it was all over.
- 4:02Speaker 2: Let me see.
- 4:02Speaker 4: There were a couple of kids.
- 4:03Speaker 2: What's that?
- 4:04Speaker 4: Kids, you know what I mean. Like young and real
- 4:06Speaker 4: in love. Roof could have fallen in. They wouldn't have
- 4:08Speaker 4: known it.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 4: Cops talked to them last night, but they couldn't tell
- 4:10Speaker 4: them nothing.
- 4:11Speaker 7: You say you'd know these men if you saw them again, huh?
- 4:13Speaker 4: You just get all the money you can on that one. Mm-hmm.
- 4:16Speaker 2: Did you see if they had a car?
- 4:17Speaker 5: Who?
- 4:18Speaker 2: The man who held you up. Oh, no. They didn't
- 4:20Speaker 2: have one, did they?
- 4:21Speaker 4: Well, I didn't see it.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Is there anything about them that you can tell us?
- 4:24Speaker 4: No, just a couple of guys, one tall, the other
- 4:26Speaker 4: one fat.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Did you see if they had a gun?
- 4:29Speaker 4: You think I'd have handed over the money if they didn't?
- 4:31Speaker 7: What kind of a weapon was it?
- 4:32Speaker 4: It was a gun, the kind with bullets. You pull
- 4:34Speaker 4: the trigger, it goes bang, like that. It was a gun.
- 4:35Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, but was it a revolver or an automatic?
- 4:38Speaker 4: Well, I don't know. I guess it was a... Well,
- 4:41Speaker 4: come to think of it, I guess... Hey, you know,
- 4:44Speaker 4: you're right.
- 4:44Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 4:45Speaker 4: I didn't see it. Not even a peek. Guy had
- 4:48Speaker 4: his hand in his pockets like this, you know? Like this? Yeah.
- 4:51Speaker 4: I didn't actually see the gun, though. Not for real. Mm-mm.
- 4:54Speaker 4: He just had it in his pocket.
- 4:55Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:56Speaker 4: Hey, you figure he was just playing a joke on me?
- 4:58Speaker 2: What's that?
- 4:59Speaker 4: A funny that he really didn't have a gun at all?
- 5:01Speaker 2: Well, we wouldn't know.
- 5:01Speaker 4: Well, why not?
- 5:02Speaker 8: What?
- 5:03Speaker 10: Well, why don't you know? It's your job, isn't it?
- 5:04Speaker 10: Knowing things like that. Bunch of crooks running around.
- 5:06Speaker 4: You don't even know if they got a gun. That's
- 5:08Speaker 4: a fine lot of cops you guys are. Mm-mm.
- 5:10Speaker 10: Hey, I might have just given him that money for nothing.
- 5:12Speaker 10: If he didn't have a gun, there was no reason
- 5:13Speaker 10: to hand it over.
- 5:14Speaker 4: No reason at all. I should have found out. That's what, huh?
- 5:16Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 5:17Speaker 10: I made a grab at the guy. Probably didn't have
- 5:18Speaker 10: nothing in the pocket but just his hand or something
- 5:20Speaker 10: like that. If he didn't have one, if I was right,
- 5:23Speaker 10: I could have told you guys.
- 5:24Speaker 2: Well, it was the other way.
- 5:26Speaker 4: Huh?
- 5:26Speaker 2: What if you were wrong?
- 5:29Speaker 7: From the method of operation and the description of the suspects,
- 5:37Speaker 7: we knew that they were the same two men who
- 5:39Speaker 7: had staged.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Six robberies in the past week.
- 5:41Speaker 7: We showed the latest victim the mug shots from the
- 5:43Speaker 7: packages that the stats office had turned for us. He
- 5:45Speaker 7: pointed out three of the pictures and said they looked
- 5:47Speaker 7: something like the hold-up men, but he was unwilling to
- 5:48Speaker 7: make even a tentative identification. 11.56 a.m. We returned to
- 5:53Speaker 7: the office and put in a call to Leighton Prince.
- 5:55Speaker 7: They hadn't been able to turn anything of value. A
- 5:57Speaker 7: canvas of the area around the bar had netted nothing.
- 6:00Speaker 2: The case stood where it had seven days before when
- 6:02Speaker 2: the robbery was first reported. 1.15 p.m. Well, it doesn't
- 6:06Speaker 2: seem to be a directional trend. No, we're hitting all over,
- 6:09Speaker 2: aren't we? Anything from Barretton? A list of names came
- 6:12Speaker 2: in this morning. We've already checked most of them out.
- 6:14Speaker 2: We could use a few more leads. I'd settle for one. There.
- 6:19Speaker 2: You seen the skipper?
- 6:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I was in earlier.
- 6:20Speaker 2: I don't think he's in the office, ma'am. I wonder
- 6:22Speaker 2: when he's going to climb on us.
- 6:24Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 6:24Speaker 2: I've been expecting him.
- 6:26Speaker 4: Better off around?
- 6:27Speaker 2: I haven't seen him.
- 6:28Speaker 4: Why?
- 6:28Speaker 7: Well, he said he might be able to help us
- 6:29Speaker 7: turn something. He said he had an informant down on L.A.
- 6:32Speaker 4: Street.
- 6:32Speaker 2: Hot shot. Let's go. Same two.
- 6:40Speaker 4: Yeah. They hit again.
- 6:50Speaker 7: Frank and I left the office and drove out to
- 6:52Speaker 7: the scene of the latest robbery. It was a small
- 6:53Speaker 7: restaurant located on South Spring. By the time we got there,
- 6:56Speaker 7: a radio car had arrived and the officer was checking
- 6:58Speaker 7: the area.
- 7:00Speaker 4: You the cops? Are you? Are you more cops? That's right.
- 7:03Speaker 10: That's what I thought. Other fella, he left. He said
- 7:05Speaker 10: he was going to look for the crooks. He just
- 7:07Speaker 10: went up the street.
- 7:07Speaker 2: You want to tell us what happened?
- 7:09Speaker 4: Held up, that's what. Held up.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Yes, we understand. Did the officer get a description of
- 7:12Speaker 2: the thieves?
- 7:13Speaker 4: Sure, got it first thing.
- 7:14Speaker 10: Said something about doing a broadcast or something.
- 7:16Speaker 4: I'm not sure what he meant, but that's what he said.
- 7:19Speaker 2: All right. You want to give us your name?
- 7:20Speaker 4: Hector Pipp.
- 7:21Speaker 2: What's that?
- 7:22Speaker 7: Pipp.
- 7:23Speaker 4: P-I-P. Like C. Uh-huh. Colin Dahl wrote a story about them. Pipps. C,
- 7:28Speaker 4: you know.
- 7:30Speaker 9: Yep.
- 7:30Speaker 4: Hector Pipp.
- 7:32Speaker 2: What's my partner, Frank Smith? My name's Friday.
- 7:34Speaker 4: Sure thing. Now, what do you all know?
- 7:37Speaker 5: Well, would you tell us what happened, please?
- 7:39Speaker 4: Better get on the ball. Can't stand around and waste time.
- 7:41Speaker 10: Better get the fellas what did it. Mm-hmm. Came in
- 7:44Speaker 10: right through that door. Came in and told me it
- 7:46Speaker 10: was a stick-up. And it's just as plain as anything.
- 7:50Speaker 4: Stick-up.
- 7:51Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 7:52Speaker 4: Sent me to hand over the money in the cash register. Over.
- 7:55Speaker 2: How much was it?
- 7:57Speaker 4: Well, I'm not sure. Must have been about $ 60, $ 70.
- 7:59Speaker 4: I'm not sure.
- 8:01Speaker 5: Did you see him when they left?
- 8:02Speaker 10: Well, certainly. Couldn't very well miss him. Small place. Just
- 8:05Speaker 10: stood here and watched him go... Watched my money go
- 8:09Speaker 10: right out the door.
- 8:10Speaker 2: Yes, sir.
- 8:11Speaker 7: What I meant was, did you see him get in
- 8:12Speaker 7: the car?
- 8:13Speaker 4: No, I didn't. No, I sure didn't. Just stood here
- 8:15Speaker 4: and watched him go. But I didn't see no car.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Was there anybody else in the place?
- 8:19Speaker 10: Oh, there was one fellow.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Where is he?
- 8:21Speaker 4: He left.
- 8:21Speaker 10: All excitement got into gear and he left.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Cincy, too. Cincy.
- 8:27Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 8:28Speaker 10: Owed me for a piece of cream pie and a
- 8:30Speaker 10: cup of coffee.
- 8:31Speaker 5: Have you seen him before?
- 8:32Speaker 4: No, on your face. He ain't from around here. Brand new.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Did you hear either of the two men use a
- 8:36Speaker 2: name of any kind?
- 8:37Speaker 4: I sure did, yeah. You want to tell us? Do
- 8:41Speaker 4: I have to?
- 8:41Speaker 2: We'd like you to, if you will.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Lodge. That's what he said. Lodge.
- 8:48Speaker 2: Which one?
- 8:48Speaker 4: The tall one, like a fence picket.
- 8:50Speaker 5: He's the one.
- 8:51Speaker 4: He called the other one Lodge. No.
- 8:53Speaker 2: But you said he used the name.
- 8:54Speaker 4: Sure. But he was talking to me.
- 8:57Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:59Speaker 7: Well, look, is there anything else you can tell us
- 9:01Speaker 7: about the men that might make it easier to identify them?
- 9:03Speaker 4: No, just two fellas. One tall, thin. Other one fat. Mm-hmm.
- 9:09Speaker 10: Didn't have no reason to call me lard. I've been
- 9:12Speaker 10: on a diet for a couple of weeks.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Eating those pills that swell up in your stomach. Mm-hmm.
- 9:18Speaker 10: Well, I guess they work for some people. Makes me
- 9:22Speaker 10: feel as though I had a sponge.
- 9:24Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 9:25Speaker 2: Was there anything outstanding about the men?
- 9:27Speaker 10: No.
- 9:28Speaker 4: Not that comes to mind, no.
- 9:29Speaker 5: They have a gun?
- 9:30Speaker 4: Not right off.
- 9:31Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 9:32Speaker 10: Didn't have one when they come in. Of course, I
- 9:34Speaker 10: didn't know that. No, sir, I didn't have any idea, no.
- 9:39Speaker 10: Got them now, though.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Stole them with the money.
- 9:41Speaker 2: What?
- 9:43Speaker 4: 38 revolver and a. 25 automatic. Took them.
- 9:54Speaker 7: Frank and I took the latest victim to the city hall.
- 9:56Speaker 7: While he started to check the mug books, we ran
- 9:57Speaker 7: the serial numbers of the guns through the record section.
- 9:59Speaker 7: We found that they were both registered to Hector Pipp.
- 10:01Speaker 7: At 3.46 p.m., Frank came back to the office from
- 10:04Speaker 7: the mug room.
- 10:05Speaker 4: Joe.
- 10:06Speaker 2: Back here. How's it going?
- 10:08Speaker 7: Oh, well, he still hasn't found it, eh? What's he
- 10:10Speaker 7: checking now? Coming out books. That's four or five more
- 10:13Speaker 7: to go through. Did you show him the pictures of
- 10:14Speaker 7: Statt's office turn?
- 10:15Speaker 4: Yeah, nothing.
- 10:17Speaker 9: Hi, we've got Zoom.
- 10:18Speaker 4: Hi, Walt.
- 10:19Speaker 10: Mugroom.
- 10:20Speaker 5: Been looking for you.
- 10:21Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 10:21Speaker 5: Talked to a fellow down on Main this morning.
- 10:23Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 10:23Speaker 5: Said he knows the guys you're looking for.
- 10:34Speaker 7: We made arrangements for somebody to stay with the victim,
- 10:35Speaker 7: and then Frank and I left the city hall. Sergeant
- 10:37Speaker 7: Walt Bitteroff drove us over to talk to his informant.
- 10:40Speaker 7: We found him in a cheap hotel on Wall Street.
- 10:43Speaker 4: All right, Walt.
- 10:44Speaker 2: Come on in.
- 10:44Speaker 4: Thanks, Angie.
- 10:45Speaker 2: You get it?
- 10:46Speaker 9: Yep.
- 10:47Speaker 4: Here you are.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Hey, Cole.
- 10:49Speaker 5: Right out of the icebox.
- 10:50Speaker 4: Yeah, thanks.
- 10:51Speaker 5: These are the two guys I told you about, Angie.
- 10:53Speaker 9: Oh, yeah.
- 10:53Speaker 4: Hey, you want some cold beer?
- 10:54Speaker 2: No. No, thanks a lot.
- 10:56Speaker 4: How about you, Will?
- 10:56Speaker 5: Uh-uh.
- 10:57Speaker 2: You don't mind if I have one?
- 10:58Speaker 4: Well, go ahead.
- 11:00Speaker 9: Oh, I must have had a good time last night.
- 11:01Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:03Speaker 9: I feel like they're three feet apart.
- 11:04Speaker 5: Uh-huh.
- 11:06Speaker 9: Hey, nothing like a cold beer the next morning.
- 11:08Speaker 2: Yeah. My girlfriend gave me some new glasses, like in
- 11:11Speaker 2: a beer commercial. Yeah, nice. It sure looks good, doesn't it?
- 11:15Speaker 8: Mm-hmm.
- 11:18Speaker 4: Oh, yes, sir.
- 11:20Speaker 9: That's what I needed.
- 11:23Speaker 4: Funny. What?
- 11:25Speaker 2: Funny about beer. Always tastes good, but a glass like
- 11:28Speaker 2: this makes it taste better.
- 11:32Speaker 4: Ambrosia.
- 11:32Speaker 2: Pure ambrosia.
- 11:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I wonder if we can get down to business, Andy.
- 11:36Speaker 4: Sure, sure.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Now I get my head back. What can I do
- 11:39Speaker 2: for you?
- 11:39Speaker 5: Said you had some information on the two guys who
- 11:41Speaker 5: were pulling these bar holdups.
- 11:42Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, that's right.
- 11:43Speaker 5: I'd like you to tell Crotty and Smith here about it.
- 11:46Speaker 2: They cops?
- 11:46Speaker 5: That's right.
- 11:48Speaker 4: You're after fellas, huh?
- 11:49Speaker 10: Mm-hmm.
- 11:51Speaker 2: Walt, tell you anything about Setup? What do you mean? Well,
- 11:54Speaker 2: anything you get. It didn't come from me.
- 11:55Speaker 5: Yeah, they know that, Angie.
- 11:56Speaker 2: Well, I gotta make sure. I remember something that helps
- 11:59Speaker 2: you out. I forget it right away. You talk to
- 12:00Speaker 2: me five minutes from now, I don't remember.
- 12:02Speaker 4: Deal?
- 12:03Speaker 2: All right. What about the guys?
- 12:04Speaker 4: Heavy.
- 12:05Speaker 2: Got in town a couple of months ago. Where are
- 12:06Speaker 2: they from? St.
- 12:07Speaker 4: Louis. You got the names?
- 12:09Speaker 2: Yeah, part of them. What do you mean? Well, just
- 12:11Speaker 2: with their call, that's all I got. A lot will do.
- 12:14Speaker 2: Don't pay to ask too many questions, you know.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 12:16Speaker 2: Step on somebody's toes and you find their foot in
- 12:18Speaker 2: your face. What about the names? Well, the tall ones
- 12:21Speaker 2: call them Ronnie. Fat guys tag whale.
- 12:23Speaker 5: Is that what everybody calls them?
- 12:25Speaker 2: All I heard. You know where they live?
- 12:28Speaker 9: Nope.
- 12:29Speaker 4: Where'd you meet them?
- 12:30Speaker 2: I move around.
- 12:31Speaker 7: I run into them a couple of bars. Seen them
- 12:33Speaker 7: once or twice. How do you know they're the ones
- 12:34Speaker 7: we're after? We just figured, that's all. Got a big role,
- 12:37Speaker 7: talk loud, the way they look, just figured.
- 12:40Speaker 2: You know where we can pick them up? I haven't
- 12:41Speaker 2: got any idea. They drive in a car? Not that
- 12:43Speaker 2: I've seen. Anything else you can tell us about them?
- 12:46Speaker 2: You've had it. Have either one of them fallen? No,
- 12:49Speaker 2: we never spent an evening talking about it, but it
- 12:51Speaker 2: figures they did. Thank you, Smith. Yeah, I guess so.
- 12:54Speaker 2: I heard the whale say this was the first time
- 12:55Speaker 2: they'd been on the coast. All right, Angie, if there's
- 12:59Speaker 2: nothing else.
- 13:00Speaker 5: If you hear anything, Angie, we'd appreciate a call.
- 13:02Speaker 7: If it works out, I'll let you know. I'm not
- 13:04Speaker 7: going to put anything in writing. Those jokers hear about it,
- 13:06Speaker 7: and I'd have to dig a hole.
- 13:07Speaker 4: Okay.
- 13:08Speaker 2: Thanks for coming by, Walt.
- 13:09Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 13:11Speaker 9: Glad I've met you guys.
- 13:12Speaker 4: See you again, huh?
- 13:12Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. Thanks for the beer, Walt.
- 13:15Speaker 4: It's okay.
- 13:17Speaker 2: Sure made the difference.
- 13:18Speaker 7: First got up, I felt like a gang of midgets
- 13:19Speaker 7: had been playing soccer.
- 13:20Speaker 2: In my mouth.
- 13:21Speaker 4: We were up last night.
- 13:23Speaker 2: Got to make a few calls around to find out.
- 13:25Speaker 5: Huh?
- 13:25Speaker 2: What kind of time I had.
- 13:38Speaker 7: We returned to the office and sent a radiogram to
- 13:40Speaker 7: the St. Louis Police Department requesting all information on anyone
- 13:42Speaker 7: in their files who'd used the nicknames Ronnie or Whale.
- 13:46Speaker 7: We checked the two names through our moniker file without result.
- 13:49Speaker 7: The next day, Wednesday, June 15th, at 5.26 p.m., we got.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Word from the East.
- 13:54Speaker 4: Here it is, Joe. St.
- 13:55Speaker 10: Louis?
- 13:56Speaker 2: Yeah, looks like they turned them. Let me see. Ronald
- 14:00Speaker 2: Saba and Gerard Llewellyn.
- 14:02Speaker 9: How about Muggs?
- 14:03Speaker 7: We're sending stand-ups right away.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Should be here in the morning, shouldn't they?
- 14:05Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 2: All right, well, I'll get it.
- 14:12Speaker 4: What is it?
- 14:13Speaker 2: Robbery out on the Olympics. Sounds like Ronnie and the Whale.
- 14:15Speaker 4: How long ago?
- 14:16Speaker 5: Just left the place.
- 14:16Speaker 2: Shot it up pretty bad.
- 14:18Speaker 9: Anybody hurt?
- 14:18Speaker 4: No.
- 14:19Speaker 2: Policemen got in their way.
- 14:34Speaker 7: The Green Tree Cafe was located at the corner of
- 14:35Speaker 7: Olympic Boulevard and Estrada Street. By the time we got there,
- 14:38Speaker 7: an ambulance had arrived and the wounded officer had been
- 14:40Speaker 7: removed to Georgia Street Receiving Hospital. A felony car from
- 14:43Speaker 7: Central Division had arrived at the scene and had.
- 14:44Speaker 2: Started a search for the officer's assailants.
- 14:46Speaker 7: We got the story from the bartender, Alvin Jaggers.
- 14:49Speaker 4: Well, two guys come in, like I told you, walk
- 14:51Speaker 4: right in, told me it was a holdup.
- 14:52Speaker 2: How'd the policeman get shot?
- 14:54Speaker 4: On the way out, it happened.
- 14:55Speaker 10: After I give the guys the money, started to leave,
- 14:57Speaker 10: Abner saw him, tried to stop him.
- 14:58Speaker 2: You know the officer, do you?
- 14:59Speaker 4: Yeah, he comes in once in a while, him and
- 15:01Speaker 4: his wife, come in for steak sandwiches.
- 15:02Speaker 2: Was his wife with him tonight?
- 15:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I think she went up to the hospital with him.
- 15:06Speaker 4: I think that's where she went. Anyhow... When Abner saw
- 15:09Speaker 4: these two fellas, you know, with the hold-up man?
- 15:11Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 15:11Speaker 4: When he saw them, he told them to put down
- 15:13Speaker 4: the guns.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Where was he standing?
- 15:15Speaker 4: You mean Abner?
- 15:15Speaker 2: That's right.
- 15:16Speaker 4: Oh, he was up there by the door. Him and
- 15:17Speaker 4: the missus was in the front booth, and the guys
- 15:19Speaker 4: went right by him when they come in.
- 15:20Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 15:20Speaker 4: He was standing right by the door, told them to
- 15:22Speaker 4: put down the guns and give up.
- 15:23Speaker 2: Well, now, did he have his gun out of the holster?
- 15:25Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 4: You know, he had it kind of aimed like this here.
- 15:27Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 15:29Speaker 4: I reckon he was afraid of the people in the place,
- 15:30Speaker 4: you know? He had a shoot or something? Mm-hmm.
- 15:32Speaker 10: And these two fellas stopped by when they saw him
- 15:34Speaker 10: dead in their steps, told Abner to get out of
- 15:36Speaker 10: the way.
- 15:36Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 15:37Speaker 4: He didn't budge none. Held his ground for sure. Him
- 15:39Speaker 4: right there and them here.
- 15:41Speaker 2: See?
- 15:42Speaker 4: Now, the tall one, he yelled that they was going
- 15:43Speaker 4: to leave and Abner shouldn't try to stop him. Uh-huh.
- 15:45Speaker 10: And they started to walk outside and Abner brought the
- 15:47Speaker 10: gun up so he could shoot at him.
- 15:49Speaker 4: Yeah. Didn't make it, though.
- 15:50Speaker 10: Shot him dead center right here in the chest. After that,
- 15:54Speaker 10: they run out the place, took off down the street.
- 15:55Speaker 2: Did the officer shoot at him at all?
- 15:57Speaker 4: Mm-mm. Didn't have no chance. Guess he was finished before
- 16:00Speaker 4: he started.
- 16:00Speaker 10: Well.
- 16:01Speaker 2: Did the men get into a car?
- 16:02Speaker 4: Well, if they did, I didn't see them. Too much
- 16:04Speaker 4: going on.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Did either one of these men use a name while
- 16:06Speaker 2: they were in here?
- 16:07Speaker 4: How do you mean?
- 16:07Speaker 5: Well, did they call each other by name?
- 16:09Speaker 4: Well, let me think about that for a minute. Yeah,
- 16:12Speaker 4: I think they did.
- 16:13Speaker 2: What was it?
- 16:13Speaker 4: Do you remember?
- 16:14Speaker 10: Well, after the shoot in the tall one, he turned
- 16:15Speaker 10: to the other fella and he said, come on, well,
- 16:17Speaker 10: let's get out of here.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Uh-huh. Which one of them did the actual shooting?
- 16:20Speaker 4: I couldn't tell you that. What do you mean?
- 16:22Speaker 10: Well, both of them shot about the same time. Wasn't
- 16:24Speaker 10: more than a half a second difference.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Bang, bang. Real fast.
- 16:27Speaker 10: Both about the same time. I don't know if they
- 16:30Speaker 10: both hit Abner, but they both shot at the same time.
- 16:32Speaker 2: Have you seen these men around before?
- 16:34Speaker 4: You know, matter of fact, I have.
- 16:35Speaker 5: They been in here?
- 16:36Speaker 4: Yeah, must have been three, four weeks ago. Come in
- 16:39Speaker 4: with Georgia. I guess that's pretty good friends.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Who's she?
- 16:42Speaker 4: Regular customer. Spent a lot of time in here. Drinks fingers. Rough.
- 16:46Speaker 2: You know we can get in touch with her?
- 16:48Speaker 4: Shouldn't be too hard. She lives down next block.
- 17:01Speaker 7: We left the bar and walked to the entrance of
- 17:02Speaker 7: the apartment hotel down the street. According to the building register,
- 17:05Speaker 7: Georgia Wells occupied apartment 314. We rang the buzzer, and
- 17:09Speaker 7: after a few moments, we were admitted to the building.
- 17:11Speaker 7: The elevator wasn't working, so we walked up three flights.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Oh, man, I guess I'm getting old.
- 17:16Speaker 7: Makes you wonder how far you'd get without all the
- 17:19Speaker 7: modern conveniences.
- 17:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:22Speaker 5: This is it here.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Yeah. Try it again.
- 17:28Speaker 4: Yeah. Yeah?
- 17:36Speaker 2: Georgia Wells.
- 17:37Speaker 8: That's right. I know you.
- 17:38Speaker 2: Police officers. We'd like to talk to you.
- 17:40Speaker 4: What about?
- 17:40Speaker 2: Might be better if we came inside.
- 17:42Speaker 4: Sure.
- 17:43Speaker 8: Come on in. Nothing here to hide.
- 17:44Speaker 4: Come on.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Don't look around, Frank.
- 17:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:50Speaker 8: What's he looking for?
- 17:51Speaker 2: Just want to check the place.
- 17:52Speaker 8: You're going to find anything here? I got no beef
- 17:54Speaker 8: with the cops. Never been in any trouble before. I
- 17:56Speaker 8: want to keep it that way.
- 17:57Speaker 2: All right. It's clean, Joe.
- 17:59Speaker 8: You're going to tell me what this is all about?
- 18:01Speaker 2: You know a couple of men named Ronald Sava and
- 18:03Speaker 2: Gerard Llewellyn?
- 18:04Speaker 8: Why are you asking?
- 18:04Speaker 2: You know them?
- 18:05Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker 2: You know where they are?
- 18:07Speaker 4: No, look.
- 18:08Speaker 8: Maybe if you tell me why you're looking for the boys,
- 18:09Speaker 8: I can help you out.
- 18:10Speaker 2: It's a police matter.
- 18:11Speaker 8: You go find them yourself.
- 18:13Speaker 2: When did you see them last?
- 18:13Speaker 8: A couple of days ago.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Where?
- 18:16Speaker 8: Bar, over on 6th.
- 18:17Speaker 2: You know where they live?
- 18:18Speaker 8: Look, mister. I don't carry no water for them, but
- 18:21Speaker 8: I'm not going to blow the whistle until I know
- 18:22Speaker 8: what the beef is.
- 18:23Speaker 2: It's pretty serious, and you're not doing yourself any good
- 18:25Speaker 2: acting like this. You know where we can find them?
- 18:28Speaker 4: Look, I'm going to level with you. I know the boys. Sure,
- 18:31Speaker 4: they're a lot of laughs. Good spenders.
- 18:33Speaker 8: That's all it is with us.
- 18:34Speaker 2: We got it that you're pretty good friends.
- 18:36Speaker 8: You've been talking to the landlady. She's all the time
- 18:37Speaker 8: sticking her nose in where it don't belong.
- 18:39Speaker 2: Is that so?
- 18:39Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 8: She's hacked at me anyway. Go out of her way
- 18:43Speaker 8: to make trouble all the time.
- 18:44Speaker 9: She'll go out of her way.
- 18:45Speaker 5: Why'd she do that?
- 18:46Speaker 8: She don't like me, that's why.
- 18:47Speaker 4: She's got no reason.
- 18:48Speaker 8: She just don't like me. All the time yelling about
- 18:50Speaker 8: how I'm using too much laundry, how I let the
- 18:52Speaker 8: water run too long, beefing about how I'm not supposed
- 18:54Speaker 8: to do no cooking in the place. Pot of coffee
- 18:56Speaker 8: and she's ready to take it in front of the U.N.
- 18:59Speaker 8: I told the truth. Boys and me been out a
- 19:01Speaker 8: couple of times. Dinner, drink, maybe a show, that's all.
- 19:04Speaker 8: Nothing serious between us. Matter of fact, they both leave
- 19:07Speaker 8: me cold, romantic.
- 19:09Speaker 7: Well, then you shouldn't worry about telling us where to
- 19:10Speaker 7: find them.
- 19:11Speaker 8: I just don't want to get mixed up in nothing.
- 19:12Speaker 8: It's all there is to it. I don't want to
- 19:14Speaker 8: get dragged into something I didn't build. You can see that,
- 19:17Speaker 8: can't you, huh? You can see that.
- 19:19Speaker 2: Where do we find him?
- 19:21Speaker 8: He'll be here in 40 minutes.
- 19:32Speaker 2: We put in a call to the office and told
- 19:33Speaker 2: them where we were.
- 19:34Speaker 7: We got out a local broadcast on an all-points bulletin
- 19:36Speaker 7: asking that two suspects be picked up.
- 19:38Speaker 2: 5.52 p.m. We settle down to wait for the men.
- 19:41Speaker 8: What are they supposed to do when they get here?
- 19:42Speaker 2: Just keep out of the way.
- 19:43Speaker 8: There's going to be no shooting, is there?
- 19:44Speaker 2: Not unless they start it.
- 19:45Speaker 8: I just don't know anymore.
- 19:47Speaker 5: What's that?
- 19:48Speaker 8: You go out with a guy, nothing serious, a few laughs,
- 19:50Speaker 8: and you end up in trouble.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Did they ever tell you what they did for a living?
- 19:54Speaker 8: Ronnie mentioned something about starting a car agency.
- 19:56Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 19:57Speaker 8: He had some deal back east where he could get
- 19:59Speaker 8: the cars cheap, and he figured on having them driven
- 20:01Speaker 8: out here and selling them. Told me how him and
- 20:03Speaker 8: the whale was going to clean up.
- 20:04Speaker 4: Mm-hmm.
- 20:05Speaker 8: Said it was the sweetest deal they ever come across.
- 20:07Speaker 8: Real sweet, they said.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Mm-hmm. Joe, you better get in the other room as well. Yeah, sure.
- 20:14Speaker 4: Please, no shooting.
- 20:20Speaker 2: All right, go on.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Go ahead.
- 20:26Speaker 10: Hi, honey.
- 20:27Speaker 4: Hi, Mr. Holder, right there. What is this?
- 20:29Speaker 2: Come on, turn around.
- 20:30Speaker 9: What?
- 20:30Speaker 4: Turn around.
- 20:31Speaker 2: Put your hands up on that wall.
- 20:34Speaker 4: Here, Joe, 38.
- 20:35Speaker 2: Where'd you get this sabbath?
- 20:37Speaker 4: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 20:38Speaker 2: This gun, where'd it come from?
- 20:39Speaker 4: I never saw it before.
- 20:40Speaker 5: It was in your coat.
- 20:41Speaker 4: Well, then you creeps put it there. It ain't mine.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Where's Llewellyn?
- 20:44Speaker 4: Who?
- 20:44Speaker 2: Gerard Llewellyn.
- 20:46Speaker 4: I never heard of him. All right, put your hands down.
- 20:47Speaker 4: Can I turn around now?
- 20:49Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 20:51Speaker 4: You guys gonna tell me what this is all about?
- 20:53Speaker 2: You know more than we do.
- 20:54Speaker 4: Well, I ain't gonna argue about that.
- 20:55Speaker 2: Where's the whale?
- 20:56Speaker 4: You guys been on the spike. I don't know what
- 20:58Speaker 4: you're talking about.
- 20:58Speaker 2: I'm gonna call downtown and get somebody out here. We'll
- 21:01Speaker 2: take him in.
- 21:01Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 21:08Speaker 9: I got you, huh?
- 21:10Speaker 4: You lousy bum. You finked on it. I had nothing
- 21:13Speaker 4: to do with it.
- 21:13Speaker 2: All right, take it easy.
- 21:14Speaker 4: She told you, didn't she? Didn't she tell you where
- 21:15Speaker 4: to get it?
- 21:16Speaker 2: It doesn't make any difference.
- 21:16Speaker 4: It does to me.
- 21:17Speaker 11: All she ever wanted was a good time. All the
- 21:20Speaker 11: time wanting to go to the best places. All the
- 21:21Speaker 11: time with the expensive clothes. You lousy bum. That's all
- 21:24Speaker 11: she is.
- 21:25Speaker 2: All right, that's enough of that.
- 21:26Speaker 4: You're not kidding. You're ordering me if I never saw
- 21:28Speaker 4: her again. It'd be the best thing.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Well, then you're going to be happy.
- 21:30Speaker 4: Huh?
- 21:30Speaker 2: That's the way it'll be.
- 21:39Speaker 7: Another team of men came out from the office and
- 21:41Speaker 7: took over the stakeout on the apartment. Frank and I
- 21:43Speaker 7: drove Ronald Saba down to the city hall. We put
- 21:45Speaker 7: in a call to the receiving hospital and found that
- 21:47Speaker 7: the wounded officer would recover. 6.57 p.m. We started to
- 21:51Speaker 7: lay out the evidence for the suspect.
- 21:53Speaker 9: We checked the gun to our record section.
- 21:54Speaker 2: That's the one you stole from Hector Pipp yesterday.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Mistake someplace.
- 21:57Speaker 2: Yeah, but we didn't make it.
- 21:58Speaker 4: You've got nothing to hold me on. Nothing.
- 22:00Speaker 2: Four of the victims have seen your picture. They're willing
- 22:02Speaker 2: to swear that you're one of the men who held
- 22:03Speaker 2: them up.
- 22:03Speaker 4: Yeah, a bunch of creeps. That's all they are. The
- 22:05Speaker 4: whole slew of them. Sure.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Come on.
- 22:07Speaker 4: Where do we pick up your partner?
- 22:08Speaker 11: I keep telling you guys I haven't got any partner.
- 22:10Speaker 11: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 22:11Speaker 2: You want to explain the gun?
- 22:12Speaker 4: I don't have to.
- 22:13Speaker 11: I never saw that gun before. You guys turned it
- 22:15Speaker 11: on me. That's what you say. Well, I say it
- 22:17Speaker 11: ain't mine. You planted it.
- 22:18Speaker 5: What about the victims?
- 22:20Speaker 4: They made a mistake. It's happened before. Lots of times.
- 22:22Speaker 11: You read about it all the time, where some joker
- 22:24Speaker 11: gets up in court, swears, you know, some fellow guy
- 22:26Speaker 11: ends up spending a couple of years for something he
- 22:28Speaker 11: didn't do. All the time, there's stories like that in
- 22:30Speaker 11: the paper.
- 22:30Speaker 4: Mm-hmm. All the time.
- 22:33Speaker 2: Well, if you sit there and think you're clean, we
- 22:34Speaker 2: got it figured different.
- 22:35Speaker 11: I don't care how you got it figured. I'm telling
- 22:37Speaker 11: the story the way it happened. Now, you keep talking
- 22:39Speaker 11: about this fellow Whale or whatever it is.
- 22:40Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 22:41Speaker 10: I never heard of him. All these jobs you say
- 22:43Speaker 10: I did. I don't know anything about them either.
- 22:45Speaker 4: I'll get it. Oh, yeah, well.
- 22:48Speaker 5: I got a call from D. Leitner.
- 22:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 22:50Speaker 5: He picked up the violence.
- 22:51Speaker 9: Yeah, he copped out.
- 22:52Speaker 5: He gave him the whole story. We're bringing him in now.
- 22:55Speaker 4: Okay.
- 22:59Speaker 2: Well, you just heard it, Saba. How about it? You
- 23:02Speaker 2: want to make a statement now? Might go easier if
- 23:05Speaker 2: you tell us.
- 23:06Speaker 10: Get him out of here.
- 23:07Speaker 4: Grab him.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Come on. Sit down there.
- 23:09Speaker 4: Come on. Let me out of there. Let me out.
- 23:11Speaker 9: Now on your feet.
- 23:13Speaker 4: Get up. Lousy fat slob. He just kept his mouth shut,
- 23:20Speaker 4: that's all. Just kept his big fat mouth shut. We've
- 23:23Speaker 4: been all right. Him and his big mouth. Now, let's go.
- 23:27Speaker 4: Him and his big fat mouth. Right into the joint.
