Latest / That Car Show / Where the Streets Have No Flame
Transcript
- 0:00But I don't know why the double D's.
- 0:01I feel like there's a joke in there somewhere.
- 0:04They write them down. Right now, this week on that car
- 0:08show, we go crazy for defenders in the desert.
- 0:12Lindsay teaches a Subaru Forest or Wilderness a thing or two.
- 0:16I go trail hunting in the Toyota 4 Runner, Trail Hunter and Dan
- 0:20goes where the streets have no name and the Joshua trees are
- 0:23cheap. All that plus more Mustang GTDS,
- 0:26some double DS, and even some Tesla news.
- 0:29It's that car show. Hey folks, welcome to this
- 0:32week's That Car show. The original car show and quote
- 0:36of the week is imitation is the best form of flattery and I
- 0:40won't say any more than that. But welcome to Lindsay and Ryan.
- 0:43We're back for another cruise show.
- 0:45Firstly, I wanted to give you guys a hat tip because of the
- 0:49scoop of getting the Masked Singer.
- 0:52Well, almost The Masked Singer. It was Los Angeles Death Highway
- 0:57Creator, which I don't think any of the podcasters have that
- 1:00gentleman. I'm assuming it's a gentleman
- 1:02who knows. According to the voice
- 1:05disguiser. But you know, AI is getting
- 1:07pretty good these days. So there was one other podcast
- 1:10that he was on probably in the last year called What's Up
- 1:14Player. And otherwise, we're the only
- 1:17ones. And that, that was a really fun,
- 1:20very unique recording experience, wouldn't you say,
- 1:22Ryan? It was it was, but really
- 1:24enjoyed that one. Have had a lot of great
- 1:26feedback. A lot of people know of the
- 1:28account other people didn't. Now do I mean, he's, he's kind
- 1:33of a kind of a genius, right? I know.
- 1:36Talking about back. Recognizing, you know, a need
- 1:40and filling the void. But I mean, and he was so nice
- 1:44like. He's great.
- 1:45He's. So nice to chat with such an
- 1:48interesting conversation. You you go back and you rewatch
- 1:52those and you see stuff you missed the first couple of
- 1:54times, right, right. And it is the details.
- 1:56It's the name of the place on the sign.
- 1:58It's the, you know, just the way, you know, I don't know the,
- 2:00the, the shoes someone has on. I mean it's just it's, it's so
- 2:04good. It's so.
- 2:04Good. So many Easter eggs on there.
- 2:06If you've not seen his account, it's Los Angeles Death Highway.
- 2:09Just Angeles. Angeles Death Highway.
- 2:12Angeles Death Highway and he uses AI to basically bring car
- 2:17culture to life in in California and also car culture that's not
- 2:22afraid to take the piss out of each other.
- 2:24So it's really, really good. And our episode was great.
- 2:27So if you, if you haven't listened to that one, recommend
- 2:28you listen to it and the feedback we've had from last
- 2:31week's episode, where do we start?
- 2:33What a guy. Yeah, it was the common theme
- 2:36was like the posts on Instagram was he's such a nice guy, he's
- 2:39such a nice guy. You've got a great guy there.
- 2:40So yeah, it's. We thank him again for joining
- 2:44us last week. That's right, got to have him
- 2:47back in time too. Yeah, that wasn't that was an
- 2:49interesting conversation. I mean, what a unique
- 2:51collection. Like there's he's the one of one
- 2:54really well, and I have to say the Last Post or I think Johnny
- 3:00posted a screenshot from one of the Angela's Death Highway
- 3:03videos. I think the Malibu 1 and I
- 3:05looked at the screenshot and I'm like, I have that picture in
- 3:08real life of like Spike and Jerry and Johnny and Matt and
- 3:12everybody just milling around talking like right in front of
- 3:15the porch at Malibu Kitchen. I was like Yep I have a version
- 3:18of that picture but mine is real.
- 3:20Have we ever seen you and ADH in the same room, Lindsay?
- 3:23I don't know. We have not.
- 3:26And if they were both on the podcast?
- 3:28I. Know again AI is getting really
- 3:33good. Really good.
- 3:34It was interesting. The latest one with starts with
- 3:36Leno driving through. There's a bit of a hat tip to
- 3:41the old place and it's basically if you're not going to buy food,
- 3:46have sex. Really.
- 3:47And. I'll say I was up there a couple
- 3:50of weeks ago and whilst I appreciate that there were
- 3:52probably a lot of people that were going to that location,
- 3:55it's a location up in the hills above Malibu and probably not
- 3:58buying food and drink and it's, it's a business.
- 4:01We went there and the Maitre-d' was very unfriendly and
- 4:05unwelcoming and we just wanted to buy a drink but we wanted to
- 4:08give them business so. Right.
- 4:10Yeah, they they got it spot on. They got it spot on.
- 4:13Now I want to talk about Lindsay.
- 4:14Lindsay, you represented both yourself and the podcast at an
- 4:19industry event, I think it was last week.
- 4:22What was that? On Thursday.
- 4:24So Avance has done. This is the second year in a row
- 4:26now during women's Month, they do a women's panel at the it's
- 4:31called the One Drivers Club. It's a car storage and social
- 4:34club in Seattle. And you, Dan and I have been
- 4:37there and they put together a panel of women in the industry
- 4:43last year. I knew a couple of the people
- 4:46and I offhandedly said to Chrissy, who was the Avant
- 4:49Seattle director and is now the national director.
- 4:54I said, all right, this is my motivation.
- 4:55I'm going to work really hard. So I get invited to be on the
- 4:57panel this year. And lo and behold, I was asked
- 5:00to be one of the panelists. So it was a really diverse group
- 5:03of women. I was there, you know, like you
- 5:05said, Dan, representing us, the show and myself and just they
- 5:10wanted women to come and share their stories of their path
- 5:14through the Automotive World. And the gal next to me owns two
- 5:18of the well known Porsche shops here.
- 5:21And she's actually from Ukraine and left during the war, came
- 5:25here, bought one shop, has built that up and then bought a second
- 5:29shop. And then the gal on the other
- 5:31side of me was kind of trying to figure out what her next move
- 5:34was. She'd had a baby and wanted to
- 5:35be an automotive. She went through the
- 5:37certification process for Steck and she's now like a master PPF
- 5:42rap technician. And then the gal on the other
- 5:47side of her is a she's an instructor at Performance, which
- 5:51is the high performance driving school and race school that I
- 5:54started driving at. So that was really cool.
- 5:57And then our last but not least panelist was the gal that owns
- 6:02the Pacific Raceway is where Performance is.
- 6:06It's a good company. It was.
- 6:08Sounds like we don't have some future guests.
- 6:10Exactly. Can we find this recording
- 6:13somewhere? It was not recorded, but I have
- 6:16some videos that I will probably share.
- 6:19And I have a lot of still pictures.
- 6:21And Tori managed to catch a lot of like Blueberry, very funny
- 6:25shots of all of us. It was a really cool group of
- 6:29panelists. Shabby, who's now the Seattle
- 6:32director. She succeeded Chrissy and she
- 6:34and Chrissy Co hosted and there were probably 50 people and
- 6:39there were a lot more like men were there too this year in the
- 6:42audience, which was cool to see. So it was really great group.
- 6:46We had an interesting discussion.
- 6:47Everybody has a really unique story and totally different
- 6:50paths, but a lot of good advice. Yeah, Excellent, excellent.
- 6:55I should probably explain. I didn't explain in the
- 6:56beginning. Ryan is currently on location in
- 6:59Santa Fe, is that right Ryan? That's right.
- 7:02That's right. Santa Fe, as they say, it's
- 7:04like, you know, 1, you know. The emphasis is on.
- 7:06Right. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 7:08You know, you know. And the reason that he's in
- 7:10Santa Fe is potentially because he's on vacation, but the real
- 7:13reason was that he begged Toyota to borrow a car and they said
- 7:17only if you give it a proper Rd. test.
- 7:18So you have more than 7 hours, Is that right?
- 7:21Yes, after that glowing GR Corolla review that I did, you
- 7:26know, I, I, I feel like I'm probably good for a while and
- 7:28and this is a very different car.
- 7:30So this is the top of the line 4 runner, current 4 runner.
- 7:33It's called the trail hunter and I had driven the Tacoma, the
- 7:36Taco version at an event about a year ago and really kind of fell
- 7:40in love with it. It's really unique in that it is
- 7:44a forerunner that needs nothing out the door to to go over
- 7:47landing to go off roading. And it's unique in that it's got
- 7:51aftermarket parts from the factory right.
- 7:54So it's got ARB rack. It's got a steel bumper in the
- 7:57back. It's got old man emu suspension
- 8:00parts. It's got rigid lighting in the
- 8:03front. The wheels are probably it's got
- 8:05these beautiful bronze wheels, which are probably aftermarket
- 8:08as well. And it it has the I guess the
- 8:12standard on the trail hunter optional and a couple of the
- 8:14lesser trims. I don't know what the the name
- 8:17is, but it's basically this mild hybrid with a with a turbo.
- 8:21It's a 4 cylinder and it makes about 330 out of horsepower and
- 8:25I think 450 some pound feet of torque.
- 8:29And the most amazing things, it's got a snorkel from the
- 8:31factory that makes all the pops whistles and you know, whatever
- 8:36sounds you want going down the road.
- 8:38It's kind of a love it or hate it proposition.
- 8:40I love it because I'm just a big child and I've got the windows
- 8:43down and you know, my wife, not a big fan daughter, somewhere in
- 8:47between. Great capable car.
- 8:50We tried to find some trails today down here in Santa Fe.
- 8:53That would be a challenge. Couldn't find any.
- 8:55It is just it's so capable. It just rolls through or rolls
- 8:59over everything. And people love this thing.
- 9:02It's this sort of blue-green with these bronze or gold
- 9:05accents. I've had more people come up to
- 9:07me to ask me about it, to say, hey, cool car, you know, waves
- 9:10from other forerunners. I heard from a couple people
- 9:14it's their dream car. So it's not my dream car.
- 9:18Wow. And I wouldn't want to it.
- 9:21It's a thing. It's it's a vibe.
- 9:22I wouldn't want to drive the thing every day.
- 9:24But I could see someone who had a daily driver, much like we
- 9:27have Porsches for the weekend, right?
- 9:29This would be their weekend car. It's maybe not so practical
- 9:32day-to-day, but hell of a thing. Lots of little Easter eggs,
- 9:36little, you know, little hidden things like a Bluetooth speaker
- 9:39that pops out of the dash, a JBL speaker that's always charged.
- 9:43You've got stereo controls in the back.
- 9:44There's an air compressor on board.
- 9:47It's a hell of a thing. I feel very at home in it here
- 9:50in Santa Fe. I feel like, you know, I, I
- 9:53belong, right? You're.
- 9:55You're properly kitted out. Yeah, yeah, So I'm, I'm it's
- 9:58growing on me for sure. Much like other Toyota products,
- 10:01right? You get in sometimes things with
- 10:03old school whatever, but like the GR Corolla, by the time I
- 10:05had to give it up, I wanted one. And I have a feeling it's going
- 10:08to be the same thing with this thing.
- 10:09So interesting. People who have not been to
- 10:12Santa Fe, what is the terrain and what is the Is it a desert?
- 10:15Is it mountain? Yeah, it's interesting.
- 10:17I think it's at about 65 or 6800 feet where we are.
- 10:20So it's quite a bit higher than even say, Denver, right?
- 10:23It's it's unseasonably warm here, much like Denver.
- 10:26I think it was in the low 80s today.
- 10:29And they also, much like Colorado, didn't get a lot of
- 10:31snow this winter. And so, you know, creeks and
- 10:34rivers are a little low, things are a little brown, but yeah,
- 10:38like the trees are flowering and all this.
- 10:40So I would say it's high desert, I think is what they call it.
- 10:44It is not as severe a terrain as say, like the Rockies in
- 10:47Colorado for the most part. But it's really beautiful.
- 10:51You know, you've got talpine forests and this and that.
- 10:54It's kind of rolling where we are.
- 10:55And it's. Yeah, I'm I'm sure there are
- 10:58some trails here that could give the 4 runner a run for its
- 11:01money, but we have. We've got a few more days to
- 11:04find your report back. That's right.
- 11:06That's right. So what does the car parks?
- 11:08What do the car parks look like there?
- 11:09Is it? Are they full of off road SU VS
- 11:12OR? It's interesting.
- 11:13I've seen some interesting Porsches here.
- 11:15I've seen some air cooled stuff. There's a great Porsche scene
- 11:18down here. I know we have a lot of
- 11:19listeners down here. I've seen a lot of Gondevagans,
- 11:23old and new, you know, Europa, who used to import Jew wagons
- 11:27before they were, you know, legal.
- 11:29You could buy one through the dealerships.
- 11:31They were in Santa Fe for many, many years.
- 11:33If you, you know, could read those old road and track
- 11:35magazines to see the ads in the back for Europa and Santa Fe.
- 11:39Lots of old Saabs for some reason, presser types who come
- 11:43down here to retire and stuff, which would explain that.
- 11:46But the the biggest thing that has has really shocked me is I
- 11:50have seen, I bet two dozen late model defenders.
- 11:54I have seen more defenders here than I've probably seen, you
- 11:58know, anywhere else, including LA.
- 12:00The, the, the defender per capita is crazy. 2 doors, 4
- 12:05doors, every trim level. They're everywhere.
- 12:08And I suppose it would be pretty pretty ideal car for here.
- 12:12Yeah, I could see that. Well, especially if you like
- 12:14going off roading, which it sounds.
- 12:16Like it's. Easy to do.
- 12:18I have a feeling most of these probably, but they look good in
- 12:21the valet, you know? Look like they could just, you
- 12:24know, turn left and head out on the trail.
- 12:27But our buddy from Defender, Sam Allen, you know, I'd love to
- 12:29talk with him. Is this, you know, kind of a hot
- 12:32spot? I mean, it must be.
- 12:33There's a car scene down here for sure a couple of my box
- 12:36which kind of threw me newer my box.
- 12:38So there's definitely a money to set here a little bit of
- 12:41everyone. But yeah, it's it's the
- 12:43defenders that really that really that struck me so.
- 12:47It's so interesting. Well, especially seeing the
- 12:5090's, the 2 doors, those always catch my attention because
- 12:53they're, there are, you know, a number of defenders in Seattle,
- 12:58especially on the east side. But the two doors are much more
- 13:01rare. Like I saw a blue 90 the other
- 13:03day and I was like, what? Never seen that.
- 13:06So good. I was at a bagel shop before we
- 13:09left Denver to come down here and there was a white 90 white
- 13:13with black wheels and all this. And I got caught by the owner
- 13:17taking pictures of the thing. And she was a young woman.
- 13:20She was home from college. It belonged to her parents.
- 13:22She went on and on and on. And you know about how it's her
- 13:25parents favorite car. And I remember talking to Sam
- 13:28Allen about, well, who buys these cars and he he said, well,
- 13:31it's like this or a Porsche, right?
- 13:33And I definitely got that vibe from her as as well.
- 13:36And yeah, it's I, I think I need one.
- 13:39I, I really, I really do. But I want an idea.
- 13:41I want a tutor. They're just so rare and they're
- 13:44just, you know, that much cooler in my, my eyes.
- 13:46So. Anyway, well, it is a
- 13:48conversation piece, you know, and I think for sure, I think
- 13:51that's one of the things I love about the Defender is that
- 13:53because there are the three variants, there really is
- 13:56something for every family or person or situation or use case
- 14:02without sacrificing, you know, where you're like, well, I'll
- 14:04just make this work. I'll make this extra long one
- 14:06work, or I'll make the short one work.
- 14:08You don't have to make it work. You can just pick the one that
- 14:10works perfectly for you. And it's one of the few cars
- 14:13that looks great in appliance white.
- 14:15Yes, I think that's my favorite color.
- 14:17I always there's, you know, they have that beautiful dark
- 14:21burgundy metallic, which I love, but I always go like, OK, but
- 14:26the white, yeah. But the white one, yeah.
- 14:29Yeah, yeah. If you ever want to drive a
- 14:31Raisin, that's the color for you.
- 14:32But I know the one. It actually looks very, very
- 14:34nice. It looks like there's something
- 14:36about the lines of the current defender and that color.
- 14:40Yes, yes. Is absolute perfection.
- 14:42Yeah, yeah, Works well in British cars across the.
- 14:44Board, it does, yes. And I think, Lindsay, you talked
- 14:47about this a little bit last week, but you've also had a
- 14:50press car recently. I'm anyone who's not had a press
- 14:53car for about 3 weeks. Four weeks because you're busy
- 14:55working that's. Right.
- 14:57Something's very strange if you haven't had a press car in a few
- 14:59weeks. That's right.
- 15:00And the one who's been, you know, press cars coming out your
- 15:03ears. So right.
- 15:04And actually we had to balance the scales a little bit.
- 15:07So they say timing is everything you picked up a Subaru just in
- 15:11time for. For Seattle, yeah.
- 15:14For Seattle to actually have winter, I mean, people had
- 15:16started saying to each other like, gosh, we didn't get any
- 15:18snow. It was really mild, you know,
- 15:20this winter and be careful what you wish for because we got,
- 15:25depending on where you were, we got between a foot and two feet
- 15:28of snow did. You really?
- 15:30It was crazy. But like you said, Dan, timing
- 15:33was absolutely perfect because I got a 2026 Subaru Forester
- 15:38Wilderness Thursday morning and Friday we woke up to snow.
- 15:41So I was very, very well outfitted and immediately took
- 15:46it and went in search of more snow because we were getting
- 15:49some accumulation where I am. But I headed inland and again,
- 15:54the timing was really funny because I got it Thursday.
- 15:57Friday it started snowing. Saturday was the Avant's Women's
- 16:00Off Road day, which was the other event that they do for
- 16:03Women's month. And I took the car and went in
- 16:08the, you know, vague direction of Dirt Fish, but ended up at
- 16:11Dirt Fish ultimately. And I was like, Oh well, without
- 16:14meaning to, we kind of went and did some recce, which is like
- 16:16the day before the rallies, they go and check the route.
- 16:19So we went and checked out where we were going to be and the
- 16:24car's so fantastic, like and Ryan, you've had one too.
- 16:27Not that. Long a few weeks ago, yeah.
- 16:28Yeah, we just had different colors, but same car.
- 16:32They're so fantastic. Like I just, and it did so well
- 16:37in the snow. Like never had a minute's
- 16:41hesitation. Like I felt completely
- 16:43confident, you know, because we kind of went exploring.
- 16:47I'm like it's got these amazing all terrain tires again, like
- 16:50you said, stock from the factory with the Forerunner as an
- 16:54overlander. This is their off road trim.
- 16:59The wilderness is for Subaru. So I was like, well, let's see
- 17:02how it does and it has. I don't know if you got to try
- 17:05the different Dr. modes, the X mode and it's got, you know,
- 17:08regular and then snow, which. Is I could without snow, Yeah.
- 17:12Right. Like and then it's got deep snow
- 17:14and mud which I really used on Saturday for the off road day.
- 17:19Yeah, tell us about. That the top one or is that do
- 17:22they do one that's more luxurious at the top end?
- 17:24They do they have a touring and a limited, which those are the
- 17:27more luxurious ones. And so I had the Forrester last
- 17:31year, 2025 for the women's off road event.
- 17:34And the one I had was actually the Touring, which is like the,
- 17:37the, you know, more creature comfort, luxury trim level.
- 17:42The wilderness is the like, take this off roading.
- 17:46And it comes from the it's got rubber mats, it's got all train
- 17:48tires, a little more ground clearance.
- 17:51You know, you can see the car is raised up a little bit and it's
- 17:56it was ready to go. You, you had some great photos
- 18:00of like just, you know, kicking up rooster tails of mud and
- 18:03snow. And I think I saw the car off
- 18:05the ground at times. Oh.
- 18:07Yes, you really put it through spaces.
- 18:09Oh yeah, I was like, I asked for a car to take off roading and
- 18:14they give it to me. So we did.
- 18:15And yeah, it was up on three wheels multiple times.
- 18:18And because of the snow, the water was much deeper than it
- 18:22was last year, so the course was much more aggressive.
- 18:25And so X mode has one option called deep snow and mud and I
- 18:29was in that mode all day. Excellent.
- 18:31The water like in this car does not have a snorkel and it's
- 18:34obviously lower than a forerunner.
- 18:36So there was 1 area and luckily they have like basically corner
- 18:40workers on the course spotters and they kept telling us they're
- 18:45like OK, at the end it's too deep, it's too deep, it's too
- 18:48deep. Finally I'm like are we going to
- 18:50be able to finish the course? Like what are we talking about?
- 18:54But we just had to go over on the side because they had the
- 18:57corner or the spotter had a Raptor and they're like it was
- 19:01about up to the top of the Raptor tire, which would have
- 19:04been, you know, mid window on the worser with no snorkel.
- 19:08But it again, it just chewed up the course.
- 19:11Like the water was up to the top of the hood in some places, but.
- 19:16It was you want to get another one in time, so you know you
- 19:18want to return it look after. It right Oh yeah, I mean I, I,
- 19:23you know, off roaded responsibly, but it was we had
- 19:26the best time the whole rest of the week talking about how much
- 19:29fun we had. The car did amazingly.
- 19:32I had the same experience last year when I took the Forester
- 19:35last year. People kept coming up to me and
- 19:38going like, you're in the Subaru.
- 19:40Wait, like, tell, tell me about this.
- 19:42They're like, I'm having so much fun watching you.
- 19:45You're tearing up the course. It's so capable.
- 19:48And yeah, like people were waving us over or running over
- 19:52when I'd finish a lap. They're like, this is so cool.
- 19:55I got the best video of you. I got the best pictures.
- 19:57I have to send them to you. So between the people that were
- 19:59out there driving with us and then the photographers that
- 20:02Avance provides. We got some pretty amazing Oh,
- 20:05that's a video. So Lindsay, you mentioned that
- 20:08there may be some changes at a certain airport in California
- 20:11and that may have a big implication on car storage in
- 20:14LA. Yes, they have announced after
- 20:18many years of people being afraid that this was going to
- 20:20happen or you know, rumblings about it, they have announced
- 20:23officially the Santa Monica Airport will be closing I think
- 20:26in 2028. So they have a couple years of
- 20:29runway obviously to figure out solutions.
- 20:31But you know, we all listen to, right?
- 20:36Thank you. I'll be here all week.
- 20:39You know, we all listen to Spike's car radio and they talk
- 20:42about that's where they keep parts of their collections.
- 20:44That's where Jerry keeps his collection in.
- 20:46Lai know you and McGregor used to keep his collection there.
- 20:50So there are a lot of car collections there because it's a
- 20:54fantastic location. It's completely secure because
- 20:58it's an active airport, so everybody feels comfortable
- 21:00leaving their cars there, you know, And I think they say
- 21:05they're going to turn it into a park.
- 21:06And my gut reaction was like, well, parks in California have
- 21:10unfortunately become a lot of places.
- 21:13They've just become campgrounds. And so it's disheartening
- 21:17because obviously that's going to cost taxpayer dollars and to
- 21:21go, like, wait. But there's so many people that
- 21:23the airport is actively serving in a positive way, and that's
- 21:28going to go away. And it's been there for decades.
- 21:33It's a historic landmark. I don't know if it's officially
- 21:36a landmark, but yeah, it's too bad to see it go away.
- 21:40Any chance they'd keep the hangers and the storage and all
- 21:43that or it's? It doesn't sound.
- 21:45Like dunzies? OK.
- 21:46They said they're gonna put in a park and sports courts and.
- 21:51Some developer will make some money off the deal.
- 21:53Don't. It's going to be pickleball
- 21:55side, right? And then they'll close it
- 21:57because the neighbors will complain about the New Orleans.
- 21:59And we know this. We've seen this before, Yeah.
- 22:01Yeah, I was like, we all know how this goes.
- 22:03Can we just leave it as an airport, please?
- 22:05And then our you know. Because Matt Farah obviously has
- 22:09got West Side, yeah, he took a number of years to build that.
- 22:12So you know there aren't many choices are there locally for
- 22:15car storage, so. Right.
- 22:17And he's falling. I mean, even with his, he's got
- 22:20two locations now and he's, you know, I think has a wait list.
- 22:24So it's the that's, I mean, that's a constant conversation
- 22:28in Southern California is like, what do you, where do you keep
- 22:31your cars? Because, you know, a lot of
- 22:33people are lucky enough they outgrow their own garages very
- 22:36quickly. There are the the the, the 1% of
- 22:41the 1% who end up just buying the houses around them to use
- 22:44the garages for storage, which is more common than you'd
- 22:48expect. Yeah, they're just like us.
- 22:52Exactly. Yeah, but interesting, yeah.
- 22:57I can find a second space of my apartment if anyone wants to
- 23:01park. A Ferrari who's called me made
- 23:03that happen. As long as I get usage rights.
- 23:07Right. It's free, you just need the
- 23:10extra set of keys, right? That's right, absolutely.
- 23:12Great location it's. Funny.
- 23:13Gassed up. Do you know what my apartment
- 23:15block was on? I watch TV show called the
- 23:17Rookie. Have you guys seen the rookie?
- 23:19Oh. I've heard of it, I haven't
- 23:20watched it yet. It's a TV show with Nathan
- 23:21Fillion. And when I went off to, I think
- 23:24I was, I went off to Phoenix car week, Scottsdale car week.
- 23:28Yeah, yeah. And the week before I got a note
- 23:30in the in the in the post to say the road's going to be closed
- 23:35for filming. So unfortunately I was away when
- 23:38they were filming, but there was a big car scene that I watched
- 23:41tonight on this show called The Rookie and it featured my
- 23:45apartment block. So, oh, that's wild.
- 23:47Even my apartment you could see, but that's.
- 23:49Cool, no one in. So watch the Rookie and near the
- 23:52end there's a. Car.
- 23:53It's a cop show, yeah. Yeah.
- 23:55Yeah, yeah. So we're in Santa Fe here and
- 23:58we're driving down the highway and I see three New Mexico State
- 24:03Police cars all in a row and, you know, green and white and,
- 24:06you know, red lights. And then it was, oh, these are
- 24:08like cars from like the 70s. They were filming a movie and
- 24:12they were sort of, it must be a cop movie.
- 24:14But muscle memory being what it is, I immediately slammed down
- 24:18the brakes. I mean, I would wasn't driving
- 24:20in the 70s obviously, but that just that police car, you know,
- 24:24they it was. Pavlovian.
- 24:27Response. That's exactly it.
- 24:28It's pretty wild. Anyway, they almost got me but.
- 24:32Yeah, time. Speaking of time travel, yeah.
- 24:35The ticket would be $8, right? It would have been.
- 24:37It would have been OK. Stern warning.
- 24:40Right. Yeah.
- 24:41We keep getting the rivet. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, that's
- 24:44right. Stopwatches and yeah, flying
- 24:48machines. Very good, very good.
- 24:52I saw that the US Postal Service has just released a new stamp
- 24:56collection. Yeah, and it's honouring low
- 24:59riders. So I thought, well, what if we
- 25:03had the ability to do our own stamps?
- 25:04What would we put? What would your theme be?
- 25:07What cars and what would it look like?
- 25:11Brian, why don't you go? Well, I can think think of a
- 25:13couple off the top can. You steal any of my ideas?
- 25:18I think you know all Porsches are all nine Elevens is probably
- 25:21too easy. Show me all the M cars, right?
- 25:24Wouldn't that be a fun series you?
- 25:25Know that'd. Be cool, the E 28 and the E30
- 25:28and and all that, but that's my vote.
- 25:30I think those are my. What's that?
- 25:32Idea. Yeah, because you want something
- 25:34that has a range where you can have enough of a variety that
- 25:36keeps it interesting. Right, 9 elevens all look the
- 25:39same. No one would know the
- 25:40difference. No, that's a great choice.
- 25:43Thanks. Thanks.
- 25:44How about you? Well, I mean, I have to go with
- 25:47Broncos. So although you could also do
- 25:54OK, so two options. You could either do Bronco
- 25:57because the body styles have been varied enough, you could
- 26:00keep it interesting and there is a current 1, you know, so a lot
- 26:04of different generations would like connect to it, right?
- 26:09I think you could also do a Shelby collection because you
- 26:12could do the 2 Cobras, you could do the GT40, you could do the
- 26:17Mustangs. You know you.
- 26:20Could do, Carol. Right, exactly.
- 26:22You know, there's a good again, you could do you have a lot of
- 26:25options to keep like keep it interesting.
- 26:29And, and I think with Ford versus Ferrari, like, you know,
- 26:33introducing a new generation to those cars, that might be more,
- 26:36even more appeal than there would have been.
- 26:39Yeah, you guys are way more academic than I am.
- 26:43So what did you mean I'm going TV movie cars?
- 26:46Oh, and I'm. Going well, that's I'm going
- 26:49Knight Rider. You know, Dukes and razors.
- 26:52I just think that would be an amazing set of stamps.
- 26:55Yeah, that. Would be it would and I think
- 26:58even people that are not stamp collectors would collect them
- 27:00and they would never get used, but that would be that'd be
- 27:03fantastic. It's.
- 27:05Genius because it's crossover into popular culture, right?
- 27:07I mean, everyone could appreciate a, you know, an E46,
- 27:11but you can't. You know who doesn't love, you
- 27:13know, the Doloran from Back to the Future or whatever, right?
- 27:15Right. Yeah, even if not all the Bond
- 27:17cars and I guess. That's cool.
- 27:19That's another one, right? Yeah, British and German a
- 27:22little bit, and the Bond cars could be a good set of stamps.
- 27:27Well, and I thought that I had seen one of the stamps, one of
- 27:30the cars that's on the low rider stamps is called Pocket change.
- 27:34It's the green and yellow. I think it's the Cutlass.
- 27:37And when I was at the Louvre in 2011, there was a low rider
- 27:41displayed under the pyramid in the Louvre, and it was also
- 27:45green and yellow and blue. And I'm like, wait, that's the
- 27:47car that was at the Louvre. So I asked our research
- 27:50assistant. It turns out that that was not
- 27:52correct. But they do have the same color
- 27:55scheme of green and yellow and blue.
- 27:57But the one that was at the Louvre is called Orguio
- 28:00Mexicano, which was a Chevy Monte Carlo.
- 28:02I thought you say it was called walking around money.
- 28:04Yeah. But it was the weirdest, like
- 28:08yeah, the most. Position.
- 28:10Yeah, because I walked into the Louvre and I'm like, OK, so it
- 28:13was like all the expressions of like, no matter where you go,
- 28:16you're always home. Or like, I can't leave, you
- 28:18know, I'm still in LA even though I'm in France.
- 28:21Yeah, it was. So funny.
- 28:23And then you had a hamburger and called it a day.
- 28:25Right, right. Went to McDonald's and I was
- 28:26like, I'm very home in France. No reason I'm.
- 28:29Trying to imagine the tour, it's like, ladies and gentlemen, on
- 28:32your left is the Mona Lisa, right?
- 28:36Oguio Mexicano. I love it.
- 28:39That's some tool, isn't? It Yeah, I thought I was seeing
- 28:42something when we first walked in inside I'm like this Kim be
- 28:45OK yeah, but that's what it was. Very funny.
- 28:49Well, when the USPS does these, they'll have us to to credit,
- 28:53right? That's right.
- 28:54I know, right? Maybe we can get that car show
- 28:57as a logo on one of them as well.
- 28:58Yeah, yeah. Oh, that's what we need.
- 29:00We need that car show stamps with our logo and then we each
- 29:04get to pick one car. Yeah, there we.
- 29:07Go. That's goals, right guys?
- 29:09Sold life goals. It sounds like there is an
- 29:13announcement coming in April about the Tesla Roadster.
- 29:17So this is one of these cars that was teased.
- 29:22There was a working model that Elon took Jay Leno in, but it's
- 29:27never people have put deposits down and it's never come to
- 29:30fruition, right. So I don't know whether the
- 29:33announcement is coming on the 1st of April.
- 29:35If it is, I think it's a completely different now.
- 29:39That tells us everything we need to know.
- 29:40Well, even this people that put down the deposits for cyber
- 29:42trucks years and years ago finally got their their cyber
- 29:45trucks right, right. So, you know, I have faith, I
- 29:47vote. But.
- 29:48Yeah. So in that sense, you can't.
- 29:49We know how that worked out. Right.
- 29:54So we'll see. But I think also Elon has said
- 29:56that potentially that car will be the last people focused car.
- 30:01So what he means by that is everything else is going to be
- 30:04more automated. Interesting.
- 30:07Tesla's obviously moving away from cars to robots, but so
- 30:11maybe it's the swan song they're.
- 30:14Like we have to deliver at least one before we just cancel all
- 30:18the cars. Yeah, stay tuned, Right I?
- 30:22Think everyone listening to us how we feel about that but.
- 30:25Yes. Well, we will see in April, see
- 30:26what the announcement is, if it actually becomes announcement
- 30:29and see whether it's one of those 1st of April announcements
- 30:32or later in the year. Yeah.
- 30:34Well, do we? So do we know?
- 30:36Because I feel like at this point, it's been like a decade
- 30:39since the Roadster was teased and people were able to put
- 30:42their deposits down. I mean, it's been a long time.
- 30:45Think of the interest on those deposits, right?
- 30:48How do you? Think they're funding everything
- 30:49else? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 30:51Paying for those rocket ships with That's right, yeah, from
- 30:55the Tesla, right. So we will see.
- 30:57But if you've actually put a deposit down on a Tesla
- 31:00Roadster, please send us a comment.
- 31:02I guess we would love to know if you've had any advanced
- 31:05communication. Yeah, tell us why.
- 31:08Yeah, we have lots. Of we are a judgment free.
- 31:11Zone. I'll show is judgment free, but
- 31:13if you have put a deposit down, let us know.
- 31:15And we, we promise not to quiz you and we're just just curious.
- 31:21Good news if you're a Mercedes-Benz fan, because
- 31:25they're bringing back the Black Series.
- 31:28The Black Series was always the unobtained.
- 31:31I can't talk this evening. What's the word I'm looking for?
- 31:34Unobtainium. Yeah, there we go.
- 31:36I'm the periodic table available.
- 31:38Yeah. Yeah, and and they're bringing a
- 31:41new one back. So I thought I would ask you
- 31:43guys and let's see if we've all got the same answer.
- 31:45What is the greatest AMG Black series of history?
- 31:50So I am very partial to the C63 Black Series because I feel like
- 31:55it was such a sleeper in the sense that if you didn't know
- 31:58what you were looking at, you'd go like, OK, Mercedes sedan and
- 32:02then you drive it. Nice, nice.
- 32:06Ryan, what did you have? Well, kind of related, the CLK63
- 32:12like that is the one for me. I think they were only made in
- 32:152008. I've actually known a handful of
- 32:17people that have owned them supposedly wonderful cars, 507 I
- 32:21think horsepower. They just look the business.
- 32:24They have these beautiful forged wheels.
- 32:26I can go on and on. Let down a little bit, I think
- 32:28by the seven speed automatic, although I think people have
- 32:30done some conversions. But I think when you look at it
- 32:33and it's sort of the, you know, through the lens of it being a
- 32:36like a German muscle car, I think the automatic is OK.
- 32:40And damn, we all should have just bought 1 when they were
- 32:43cheap because they have really, really come up.
- 32:47They're just cool. I mean, and I, I think silver is
- 32:49the colour on those. But yeah, that's that's that's
- 32:53my favorite AMG black car, no question.
- 32:57What about you, I? Understand, the good news is
- 32:59we've all got different cars. OK, good, good.
- 33:02Which is great. We're really good at all
- 33:04choosing different things, so it keeps it.
- 33:06Interesting. Yeah.
- 33:07So I went for the SL65 AMG. Which is it?
- 33:11They it was always a hardtop car, right?
- 33:14The the SL traditionally was a hardtop convertible.
- 33:17Yeah, it was. You couldn't get it in a
- 33:19convertible. I just think the stance on it, I
- 33:22just think it looks. Yeah, it's cool.
- 33:25I forgot that that wasn't that. That was a hardtop and I I think
- 33:28that was the car where it had so much power and torque.
- 33:31They had to dial down the power and the first couple of gears,
- 33:34right, as to not explode the transmission.
- 33:39That was a cool thing for sure. I'm looking.
- 33:40At it now towards to HWA who are the guys who are resting modding
- 33:44the old one 90s? OK.
- 33:47They did a lot of work on different AMG cars and one of
- 33:51the owners of HWA was a founder of AMG OK when he sold the
- 33:55company's cameras with attitude. Do you know what the rarest
- 33:58black Mercedes Black Series car is?
- 34:03I do not, so I would love for you to tell us.
- 34:06Is it lame, Dan? Is it something really terrible?
- 34:09I. Wouldn't say it's.
- 34:11C Class wagon or something. But it's not one that I don't, I
- 34:14don't think I would want to buy it.
- 34:15But it's the it's the SLK. They did an SLK Black series.
- 34:19That's right. Not in the states though, if I
- 34:21recall. I don't know, but had only 400
- 34:25horsepower I think. Yeah.
- 34:27But it was weird because it was, you know, you wouldn't expect it
- 34:30in that smaller car. Yeah.
- 34:31Do you know what then? That was the worst SLK ever made
- 34:34in my eyes. That was the one that sort of
- 34:35aped the SLR look, but it just, it was that era of like
- 34:39Chrysler, Mercedes-Benz where the interior was just not to
- 34:43snuff. And yeah, that's an unfortunate
- 34:46looking thing. I'm looking at it now.
- 34:47So I mean, it's still badass, don't get me wrong, but I think
- 34:50you can only put so much lipstick on a pig, huh?
- 34:52It's. Like the ginger stepchild, isn't
- 34:54it? You said it.
- 34:57All things. I like redheads so.
- 35:03So I think it's coming out very soon in the new Black series.
- 35:06So yeah, cool. Yeah, it's.
- 35:07Great. I think continuing that
- 35:08tradition. Any sense of price?
- 35:10Let me see if our research department is.
- 35:12Speaking of unobtainium A. Lot you have to.
- 35:16Ask while you do while you do that it's so good to see like
- 35:19the pre merger. AM GS finally coming into their
- 35:22own? Took a little time but but I'm
- 35:25guessing this is at least $200,000 so it's.
- 35:28Oh, I would imagine it'd be 3, half a million, I would guess
- 35:31because. Multiples.
- 35:33Well, I'm still living in the 70s, so that's right.
- 35:36I'm still slamming on the brakes for In Riot.
- 35:39Timeline, it's affordable, so yeah, yeah, we're gonna go with
- 35:42that. That's right.
- 35:43That's right. Very good.
- 35:46Lindsay, you had a story about a dealer being accused of selling
- 35:50a Jeep to a person with dementia.
- 35:52Yes. So apparently so it was in
- 35:55Carrollton, GA which I'm like, oh, there's all, you know,
- 35:58there's like a Carol tie in, of course.
- 36:02But yeah, so apparently this man that was living in a senior
- 36:05living facility responded to an ad that the dealer had placed,
- 36:09and the dealership ended up sending a salesman to the senior
- 36:12living facility. Oh boy.
- 36:15But unfortunately, the man that had contacted them has dementia.
- 36:18So he ended up somehow, I think they took him, like picked him
- 36:23up and took him back to the dealership.
- 36:26So there's a contract and the man has since passed away.
- 36:30Before he passed away, neither he nor his wife had any memory
- 36:34of like, signing the contract or buying the car.
- 36:37And the dealer is refusing to unwind the deal, no.
- 36:40No, no, no. I which is why, I mean, it's
- 36:43crazy. It should be a no brainer, but I
- 36:46made it got me thinking. And so I'm curious what you guys
- 36:50like, what you may have had, what stories you may have,
- 36:53because I was thinking like, OK, what was the craziest car
- 36:56dealership experience I had over the years?
- 37:00And before I got the X3, I was also looking at manual
- 37:04forerunners And I, cuz I think they made them like mid 90s, you
- 37:07could get a manual forerunner and they're rare.
- 37:11And so when they came up, you had to jump on it.
- 37:13And I had been stocking, you know, all the dealers and
- 37:17Craigslist and classified ads, all that up here.
- 37:20And one came up at a dealer in downtown Seattle.
- 37:23And so I went right after work and I talked to a sales guy and
- 37:27he did not know that they had taken this car in.
- 37:29So I knew before he did so that, you know, I was like, OK, it's
- 37:34fine. It's a new car.
- 37:36He couldn't find it on the lot. And I kept, I was like, all
- 37:39right, maybe this is not to be. And then he said, oh, no, no, I
- 37:43figured it out. It's in our, I don't know what
- 37:45you'd call it because it wasn't a repair shop, but it's like
- 37:47where they take the cars to refurbish them before they put
- 37:50them out on the lot after they take them in on trade because
- 37:53this car needed some body work apparently too.
- 37:56So he ended up taking me back into this shop, which I don't
- 37:59think customers are supposed to have access to.
- 38:03And because I don't think customers are supposed to go
- 38:07there, I didn't have like the correct shoes and I ended up
- 38:09falling in the shop. Really.
- 38:12And I was like, you know what? This is not, this is not meant
- 38:16to be. I gotta.
- 38:17Go, ladies and gentlemen, Josh Toyota, right?
- 38:23And yeah, and the rest is history.
- 38:25Yeah. Wow.
- 38:27Yeah, wow. What's your worst experience,
- 38:30Dan? I'm just trying to think.
- 38:32I mean, I, I, when I bought the Corolla, it was, I signed all
- 38:36the forms, but they didn't take any money and the cars were in
- 38:38high demand at the time. So I ended up like chasing them,
- 38:42chasing them, chasing them. And the car was in LA and the I
- 38:45was up in Seattle at the time. And I ended up having to talk to
- 38:49the dealer principal and say, look, you've done all the forms.
- 38:52You've not taken any money, but I don't want you to sell this
- 38:56car to someone else. And he gave me his word.
- 38:58But that was a lot of chasing just to make sure that that car
- 39:01was mine, even though I signed the forms.
- 39:03Yeah, and you removed your your hands from his neck and his
- 39:08history. Yeah.
- 39:09Yeah, what about you, Ryan and he?
- 39:10Yeah. You know, I'm thinking back,
- 39:12I've generally had good experiences, but as a younger
- 39:14person or my credit wasn't quite, you know, where it is.
- 39:17Maybe today's an old man. I do remember going into it was
- 39:21a, it was a high end sort of used lot, right?
- 39:25And being offered a 14.99% interest rate, which I think
- 39:32talked him down to 1299 or 1199 and thought I'd really, you
- 39:35know, correct. Negotiator.
- 39:37Yes, yes, yes. And, you know, and then, of
- 39:40course, realizing very quickly, you know, that that was not a
- 39:44good deal. Yeah.
- 39:44I've always argued that, you know, in high school people
- 39:47should be taught, like, practical math, you know, and
- 39:50compound interest in this kind of thing in a way that I don't
- 39:52think I ever was. Not to make excuses, but, you
- 39:57know, I was happy to get a car, I guess.
- 39:59Didn't keep the car very long, got better credit scores as I,
- 40:02you know, got a real job and this kind of stuff.
- 40:04But in retrospect, I sort of feel like they took advantage of
- 40:07me. I guess I was happy.
- 40:10But you know, this, this, this dealership, do we know the name
- 40:13of this dealership with the dementia couple?
- 40:15Because we should call them out. And, you know, at least now we
- 40:19know who's buying these Jeeps in 2027.
- 40:22Let's see. OK, I can.
- 40:23Find well, it's Scott Evans, Chrysler Dodge.
- 40:27I allegedly did this. Let's let's not break ourselves
- 40:31into jail. Or if you are, you need to sue
- 40:33Ryan Barkey. That's Ryan.
- 40:35Barkey, good luck. You bring that credit score
- 40:39right back down it. Does seem to be this theme right
- 40:42now of at least in the press, a few sketchy dealerships.
- 40:45Because also I think 2 weeks ago there was the story about the
- 40:48guy who bought the GT3 and then he found out that the car was
- 40:52actually a training car for training and stuff.
- 40:56So there's a, you know, there's a lawsuit going on there as
- 40:59well. Yeah, yeah, there's that.
- 41:02Is it the the Lion Green or or the Birch Green or whatever GT3
- 41:06there? I think Vin Wiki did a piece on
- 41:07it. I've seen some stories online
- 41:09where this car just keeps getting passed around and sort
- 41:11of getting washed right, the title and all this.
- 41:14But they have now traced this car back to some basically drug
- 41:17addict who bought this thing new with cash and ran it into the
- 41:20ground. And you can hide A lot right
- 41:23with the process of of of typing the car.
- 41:25Yeah, if you know what you're doing.
- 41:27This kind of stuff. Tidal washing, Yeah, for sure.
- 41:30Don't let us don't get us started on that, that whole the
- 41:33the bring the trailer thing, right with the, with the cars
- 41:35that are are bought and sold by like 6 of the same people,
- 41:40right? Specifically late model GT
- 41:42Threes. Did you?
- 41:43No. Buddy DM McGuinness brought this
- 41:45to our attention. But basically, someone actually
- 41:48looked at Bring A Trailer. And we, we love Bring a Trailer.
- 41:50I had to laugh. We're in an Airbnb.
- 41:52And I kept thinking as I walked in the door, all the parallels
- 41:54between like, Airbnb and Bring a Trailer.
- 41:56Like, everything looks much better in photos, right?
- 42:02Yeah. And.
- 42:04There's like an online. Smoker's car there's.
- 42:06Like an online dating parallel in there.
- 42:08I digress. Yeah, especially with filters
- 42:10and all. No, it's this place is, is is
- 42:12perfectly nice, but but yeah, I think in a nutshell, what was
- 42:16happening is someone actually ran the data on late model GT
- 42:19threes and specifically tourings.
- 42:21And they realized that of all the 15, you know, 992 tourings
- 42:25that have been bought and sold on, on Bring a Trailer.
- 42:28All transactions except for maybe one or between the same 5
- 42:31or 6 individuals. And often cases, often cases,
- 42:34cars were, were sold by a dealership to a friend of the
- 42:38dealer and then the car would show up with, you know, three
- 42:41extra miles at another dealer. And what's happening is they're
- 42:44artificially setting the market at about $100,000 more than
- 42:47sticker. And it's, it's, it's really
- 42:49discouraging. You know, you know, it's like
- 42:54anything, right? You know, you have something and
- 42:56people are going to take advantage of it.
- 42:58And, and I think that's what's what's happening, but it's too
- 43:00bad because, you know, I remember the day of days of
- 43:03being able to go in and just, you know, you bought what you
- 43:05want, right? Yeah.
- 43:07And it's, it's, you know, it's, it's tomfoolery like this,
- 43:11right? That is has really changed,
- 43:13changed that, you know, changed the experience, you know, and
- 43:16it's it's unfortunate, but. Foolishness and nonsense all
- 43:20around. Yeah.
- 43:21But a car you can buy is that Ford have just announced they're
- 43:24opening the books again for the GTD.
- 43:27That's right. So my question to you guys is
- 43:30actually, is it less appealing now that you can potentially buy
- 43:35it again? When it first sold out, it was
- 43:38almost like an exclusive car. And we know that when exclusive
- 43:41cars come out, they generally go up in value.
- 43:43You know they get appreciated, but you know, now that you could
- 43:47potentially buy it, is it less appealing?
- 43:50Were those sold as a limited series?
- 43:52Yeah, they were. I don't have the numbers, but it
- 43:56was a limited number. We're going to be built and you
- 43:59had to apply. And what I thought was
- 44:02interesting in the article that I read about this next round of,
- 44:06of like applications is that they said the people that
- 44:10applied in the initial round were told that their application
- 44:14would be kept on file. So I'm like, oh, I wonder if you
- 44:18want to reapply. You just go back in and you're
- 44:20like, please consider me again. Yeah.
- 44:24Yeah, I, I don't know. I kind of never really did it
- 44:27for me, you know, I, I think they're cool, but I don't know.
- 44:32It was, I never got quite as excited as maybe some other
- 44:34people did, like me. You've driven 1 Dan.
- 44:37I haven't you tell, but. I haven't.
- 44:39Oh, I've driven the dark horse. I've not driven.
- 44:41The JT That's right, that's right.
- 44:43I've been in the presence of a few, we, we've had a few
- 44:46different car shows and stuff, but it's 325,000 right?
- 44:51And and that's where it. Starts.
- 44:52That's what they start. Yeah, yeah.
- 44:54Well, and I think I heard people were saying that that was what
- 44:59they had announced the starting price was going to be.
- 45:01And then before they even came out, I think there were some
- 45:03delays and people were saying the price had gone up like the
- 45:07base price before they were even out.
- 45:10Because I think a lot of the cars built in Canada and
- 45:13presumably if they're then that would have taken effect.
- 45:20Yeah. There's a really good video of
- 45:22Chris Harris and Max Verstappen taking taking one around the
- 45:26track. So if you get the chance, have a
- 45:28look at that video. It's it's very, very good.
- 45:31Yeah. But yeah, I just, it's not for
- 45:32me. Yeah, I'm sure it's wonderful,
- 45:35but yeah, at the end of the day, it's just not where my.
- 45:37OK, well I will take one for the team for that car show and I
- 45:42will apply for me. Yeah.
- 45:44I just, I love the story behind how it was created.
- 45:50It was very lucky to be at one of the unveiling events when
- 45:53they debuted it in at Monterey. It was at Spanish Bay.
- 45:58They introduced the car and Jim Farley spoke and talked about
- 46:01the story behind it and their goals for it.
- 46:03And I love that they looked at the GT3RS and they're like, we
- 46:06want to build a competitor to that, which is not something
- 46:09that Ford had done. And like that's an incredible
- 46:12goal because people don't typically compare Ford and
- 46:15Porsche, right? When you look at this car, it's
- 46:18like you can see the engineering and like for multi Matic to have
- 46:22created it with Ford, they're the ones that created the new
- 46:25GT. So I really love it.
- 46:28Yeah, might be too capable for someone like me to, you know,
- 46:31it's. Right.
- 46:33I think multi matic, let's say their name correctly, I think
- 46:37they actually provide parts of a Ferrari.
- 46:39So I think they do. That's right, yeah.
- 46:41It's a it's a high end, you know, sure this isn't your Ford
- 46:44Mustang that's gonna be at the cars and coffee leaving in a
- 46:47really, you know disrespectful way, but it's a lot of money for
- 46:53a blue Oval I. Know it is.
- 46:55They're Multimatic is the one. They're the company that
- 46:58developed the GT that won Lamar in 2017, which was the 50th
- 47:03anniversary. So they know what they're doing.
- 47:04Yeah, It's got all the right parts.
- 47:06It checks off all the right boxes.
- 47:08You know, it is a great story. And, you know, it's just, there
- 47:13are a lot of options for, you know.
- 47:15There are plus, absolutely. Maybe maybe Ford need to create
- 47:20a new brand that is. Like.
- 47:22A racing brand and it's it's separated to because when you
- 47:26say Mustang GTD right, the Mustang thing.
- 47:29But if they had some sort of RSGTD then maybe it would be
- 47:33more interesting. I don't know I I can't get away
- 47:36D in my mind with cars means a diesel, right.
- 47:40And I think of all the BMWs, other things that have used DD
- 47:42in the, you know, in the naming, you know, nomenclature, you
- 47:45know, Mercedes and it's just so I can't get past that.
- 47:48It's not a sexy name. I you know, if you could have
- 47:51not a sexy name in that ring. Inspector Toyota.
- 47:52Real quick, not to hijack the conversation, but there is a new
- 47:57a Toyota truck. It's the TRD Hammer and I have a
- 48:01couple problems with that one. It sounds like a made-up like
- 48:06superhero. Yeah, yeah.
- 48:08Yeah, I have. To use the hammer.
- 48:13Something you use so you can, right?
- 48:15Yeah. And in my again, my mind, you
- 48:17know my hammer is AMG, right? Like an AMG hammer.
- 48:21And that's all that will ever mean in the car truck rolling
- 48:24list for that. Naming is more important than I
- 48:27think we give it credit for. It's like you look at Acura and
- 48:30when they stopped using names and they went to TL and you
- 48:33know, TSX and RL and all this sales went down.
- 48:36And I think there's probably a correlation, right?
- 48:39It's just, I think, you know, other than maybe Mercedes-Benz
- 48:41and BMW, it's just, you know, we want names, but those names mean
- 48:44something. You have to be very, very
- 48:46careful what you name things. So you know the whole Chevy Nova
- 48:49story and, and all that, right from the 70s.
- 48:53Again, I think Ryan when he went to Santa Fe, he didn't realize
- 48:58he entered A wormhole to the. 70 I may be the youngest person
- 49:02here. There's that.
- 49:03Yeah, right. Yeah.
- 49:05Well, it's like being me. Ever hot?
- 49:09Tub very, like you said, naming. It's like when you go to name a
- 49:14child, you realize how many associations you have with
- 49:18different names that you didn't know until you start throwing on
- 49:20and you're like, well, no, that was that person in junior high
- 49:22that I didn't like or was no, you know, mean to me or
- 49:25whatever. But we talked about this.
- 49:26My daughter's name is Elsa. I don't think that's any secret.
- 49:29You know, she was born before the movie Frozen, right?
- 49:33And a couple three years later, you know, there was Elsa close
- 49:37enough if you're three years old, you know, and fortunately,
- 49:39Elsa was like the, you know, the beautiful queen or whatever.
- 49:41But what if she had been the Wicked witch?
- 49:43Can you imagine how difficult it's if you want to be unique?
- 49:46Come on, Disney. Yeah.
- 49:48Yeah. Anyway, sorry, that's the cars.
- 49:51I was just thinking there's going to be a whole lot of kids
- 49:53that are named after the Wicked movies.
- 49:57Yeah, yeah, you can tell. You know, you, Yeah.
- 50:01When you look generationally, you're like, what movies were
- 50:03popular when you were younger? And then people end up naming
- 50:06their kids those names. Well, I think Lindsay, Dan and
- 50:09Ryan were sort of of their era, right?
- 50:11Yeah. Were there a lot of Ryan's?
- 50:13I mean, I know there were a lot of Ryan's when I was in school.
- 50:17Yeah, there were, surprisingly. Not the MO, sorry.
- 50:26There was one other Lindsay, which actually both sets of
- 50:29parents were shocked about because it's not very common,
- 50:31but yeah, Dan, were there? Were you one of many Daniels in
- 50:35school, or Dan one, or? 2 But I was named after an Elton
- 50:39John song. Really.
- 50:41Oh. Yes, sorry, which song is that?
- 50:45I'm trying to think. Annual.
- 50:46Oh God, actually. I'm just going to go if.
- 50:50You. Were shooting in highbrow
- 50:53conversation. This is the wrong podcast.
- 50:55I'm. Thinking candle in the wind
- 51:00like. Don't shoot me, I'm the piano
- 51:02player. From the 70s.
- 51:04You think I know this, right? That's so funny.
- 51:07Just TuneIn to the radio, see what's playing at the minute,
- 51:10Right? That's funny, Ryan.
- 51:12Were you named up for a famous Ryan?
- 51:14No, I was not. And it's of course an Irish name
- 51:16and we're not Irish at all, so I'm not sure.
- 51:19My sister's name is Aaron. So 22 you know 2 Lovely.
- 51:24Irish names. Yeah, you know.
- 51:27Maybe your parents are so I. Could have been named something.
- 51:31Right. Well, people say like, what's
- 51:34the Irish word for the Irish equivalent for like if you're an
- 51:37Irish enthusiast. Potato file.
- 51:43I think it's funny that some folks over here call it some
- 51:45Patty's Day. That hit a nerve with some folks
- 51:49this year, didn't it? Yeah.
- 51:50Because where did that come from?
- 51:52It's not TTY, it's DDY. Right, DUDY?
- 51:55Yeah, Well, because that here it's a nickname for Patrick.
- 51:59Yeah. But I don't know why the double
- 52:01DS feel like there's a joke in there somewhere.
- 52:04They write themselves right now. Write themselves.
- 52:10What have you guys got coming up over the next couple of weeks?
- 52:13Much. How much?
- 52:15I mean, this morning it was brilliantly sunny, so hopefully.
- 52:17You're always up to something. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 52:20Stay tuned. But you get that GT4 out if
- 52:22nothing else. Yeah, yeah.
- 52:24I do want to give a shout out to the Reset Hotel.
- 52:29So a couple of weeks ago I stayed and it was beyond Joshua
- 52:32Tree. So you head W from LA and keep
- 52:35going, keep going. Eventually get to Joshua Tree
- 52:37and just the other side was this place called the the Reset
- 52:40Hotel. Is that where the streets have
- 52:41no name? Almost, but apparently.
- 52:45Wait, you can check in, but you can never leave.
- 52:48Oh my God. You too.
- 52:50But no, no, Led Zeppelin wrote a song about the I think it's
- 52:54called 29 Palms, which. Is why I was saying yeah.
- 52:56OK, Led Zeppelin wrote a song about it, but this hotel was all
- 53:00shipping containers so. You started in the shipping,
- 53:04Yeah. In the middle of the desert.
- 53:06But I, I drove, I took the Audi out there and stopped at one of
- 53:09the rest stops to pick up some firewood because each container
- 53:13had a, you know, had a, a fire pit.
- 53:16And I'm so anyway, I say to the guy, you know, can I take any of
- 53:20the firewood? And he, yeah, just take the
- 53:22biggest pile, take the biggest pile.
- 53:23None of the fuckers told me that there was a wind advisory and no
- 53:26one was allowed fires. They're like, take the biggest.
- 53:33Pile because. I'm not going to sell anymore.
- 53:35That's amazing sort. Of logs in the car that couldn't
- 53:37get used. But the hotel was wonderful.
- 53:40It was a great place for a reset.
- 53:41So the Reset hotel 29 Palms highly recommend it.
- 53:46And what what, what a shame, because nothing burns like
- 53:49Joshua Tree wood. True, right?
- 53:52Wait, so you're on a shipping container in the middle of the
- 53:55desert? Like your unclaimed cargo or
- 53:57something? Was it air conditioning?
- 53:59Was it? Was it pleasant?
- 54:00Was it it? Was very pleasant.
- 54:02They had air conditioning, they had a like a pool.
- 54:05They had AI didn't use it, but they had like one of those
- 54:08plunge pools. OK, also in a shipping
- 54:10container. That wasn't, that was just like
- 54:13outside, but an infrared sauna. Oh, what does that mean?
- 54:18Red light. It's a red light sauna, so it's
- 54:21it's different to like. The heated stone heat.
- 54:25Lamp, yeah. I consider myself a bit of a
- 54:27sauna, A fisty or. Not OK.
- 54:29OK. No, they have, you know, you'll
- 54:31have like the heat lamp with the the stones is the traditional
- 54:35one. OK, but an infrared 1 is red
- 54:38light and that's how it generates the sauna effect.
- 54:40So you go in and hang out, and then you go jump in the plunge
- 54:43pool. OK, did did you get a reset?
- 54:46Would you feel it was? It was.
- 54:47Yeah, I mean, obviously you then reset as soon as you get back to
- 54:50the office. Yeah, it's gone.
- 54:52But no, it was a great, a great place.
- 54:55And I, I'm not a fan of the traffic getting out there.
- 54:57So coming back, I like left at 6:00 AM and there was nothing
- 55:02better than leaving the desert. And the sun coming up behind you
- 55:04is you're, you know, is you're slowly making your way back to
- 55:07LA. Do you drive through Riverside
- 55:08on the way out there? I think you get to buzz San
- 55:11Bernardino. San Bernardino, I'm sorry,
- 55:15Riverside County, I think San. Bernardino Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 55:18Yeah, keep going. Do not.
- 55:20Yeah, but Dan, you took your drone with you, right?
- 55:23I did, yeah. I got myself a new drone and I
- 55:25got some good shots. You got some cool footage, I
- 55:27think you posted a little clip maybe and it looked amazing.
- 55:32Yeah, at that location. I would highly recommend it if
- 55:35you if you're looking for somewhere to go and just kind of
- 55:37chill out for a while. It's funny that my hairdresser,
- 55:41I said to my hairdresser, Oh yeah, I went out to 29 Palms.
- 55:43He's like, did you do shrooms? I'm like, well anyway, did you
- 55:46do shrooms? And I'm like, no, I didn't do
- 55:48shrooms. Everyone does shrooms out there.
- 55:49I'm like no I didn't do shrooms. Well, that car show the.
- 55:52Real way to do it is to. Do about it, OK, Yeah, OK.
- 55:55If you want the full reset, you got to do something.
- 56:00Yeah, I just have logs. Yeah.
- 56:03Unused. Sweet.
- 56:04Do you still have this wood? What did you do in there?
- 56:06Is this OK? I was gonna say because I think
- 56:08probably that's their their scam, right?
- 56:10You leave it behind and they go collect it and then they go sell
- 56:12it for the next guy, right? Yeah, Dan's like not on my
- 56:15watch. It's going back to LA with me
- 56:17where I also can use it complete.
- 56:19A little bit, a little bit. So yeah.
- 56:23Your next visit. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:25When are you driving back, Ryan? We are driving back on on
- 56:28Saturday morning, so by the time you listen to this, I'll still
- 56:31be in Santa Fe. If you happen to be down in
- 56:32Santa Fe and I know there are a couple of you, let's grab a beer
- 56:35or something. We can.
- 56:37We can marvel at all the Land Rover defense.
- 56:42Exactly the land of the defender.
- 56:44I mean, I think, I think I need to make a pilgrimage there now.
- 56:49Do you remember those old T-shirts, like from the 60s,
- 56:51seventies? Defend Brooklyn, You know there
- 56:52should be Defend Santa Fe and then there's a picture of a of a
- 56:55defender. That's like a Winky fan, all
- 56:57right? You're right, Sam, are you
- 56:58listening? Yeah, that's so funny.
- 57:01Love it. Nice.
- 57:03Anything else anyone wanted to talk about tonight?
- 57:06Man, that was damn near an hour. I know that we've, I mean, I
- 57:10feel like that was jam packed. We've all been doing so many
- 57:13different car related things. Yeah, yeah.
- 57:16I just want to say again, if you haven't go back, listen to the
- 57:18Angela's Death Highway episode and also listen to the Myron
- 57:22Vernus episode. I think those were those are in
- 57:26the pantheon or should be of of that car show.
- 57:29Great episode. I'm proud of so.
- 57:32Well, it's always nice because I think we all go back and listen
- 57:36just to sort of check our work. And it's always nice when you're
- 57:40listening and you find yourself laughing organically and you're
- 57:44like, I was there and I'm still finding it funny.
- 57:46Or I think, like you said, Ryan, you because when you're
- 57:49recording your eye, you know, you're kind of thinking like
- 57:52ahead and paying attention to the conversation.
- 57:54But then when you listen, you get to just enjoy the
- 57:56conversation. And particularly the Angela's
- 58:00death Hwy. 1, we covered so many topics that there were a couple
- 58:03moments where I was like, oh, I forgot we even talked about
- 58:06that. And that's, you know, so it was
- 58:09brand new for me, too. Yeah, you.
- 58:11Get lost in the conversation. That's a good one.
- 58:13Yeah, you know, it's a good time.
- 58:14Yeah, Highly recommend. Well, I think we're at a show,
- 58:17so he's going to give us the phrase.
- 58:19I'm happy to send us off with an exhortation to remember always
- 58:24be driving. Thank you so much for joining us
- 58:26and we will see you next week.
