- 0:03Speaker 1: I forgot that she was also the sexy fish and
- 0:05Speaker 1: shark Tail. Just wanted to make yes, thank you, thank you,
- 0:09Speaker 1: that is so true that and thank you for and
- 0:12Speaker 1: yet and she should say it, and thank you for
- 0:16Speaker 1: saying that. I've never really been a gamer, but Laura
- 0:25Speaker 1: Croft tomb Reader was not like a super important cultural
- 0:32Speaker 1: figure for me as a youth, but definitely someone I
- 0:36Speaker 1: was aware of and thought was cunt. Someone I was
- 0:40Speaker 1: aware of and thought was cunt is the title of
- 0:43Speaker 1: your next memoir? That? Or actually that sounds like a
- 0:46Speaker 1: Lata tel Ray album. Someone I was aware of it
- 0:49Speaker 1: thought was maybe, no, that's a that's a song on
- 0:52Speaker 1: a Lata album. Someone I was aware of parentheses and
- 0:55Speaker 1: thought um. And someone I've also long been aware of
- 0:59Speaker 1: and have always hot his count is Macy Rodman, who's
- 1:03Speaker 1: here today to talk with us all about Laura Croft
- 1:07Speaker 1: tomb Raider and the woman who embody Audi Audi to
- 1:11Speaker 1: her Angelina Jolie. And this is we like we can't
- 1:15Speaker 1: play this down a trenifestation, okay, Like Macy is god
- 1:19Speaker 1: of podcasting and like we in podcast communities adore everything
- 1:24Speaker 1: that is nympho wars so to like have macye on
- 1:26Speaker 1: the show. Hello, this is come true. Yes, if you
- 1:29Speaker 1: aren't familiar with Macy, she's an incredible performer, musician and
- 1:36Speaker 1: co host of nympha Wars, the best and only podcast
- 1:40Speaker 1: to ever exist, the only podcast that should exist, including
- 1:44Speaker 1: this one. Um, so we will this is the last
- 1:46Speaker 1: episode of this podcast. We will be ending it after
- 1:49Speaker 1: this so that only Nympho Wars continues. But we're so
- 1:53Speaker 1: happy to have me see with us today to talk
- 1:55Speaker 1: about all things tomb Raider and Angelina Jolie. Because this
- 2:00Speaker 1: is like a virgin the show we give yesterday's pop
- 2:03Speaker 1: culture today's takes. I'm dam and I'm fran Toronto. Rose, Rose,
- 2:10Speaker 1: you've know that we have some newses out because do
- 2:15Speaker 1: you want to know what happened to me last night?
- 2:17Speaker 1: What happened to you last night? And X, who I
- 2:20Speaker 1: have not spoken to are seen in years, texted me
- 2:23Speaker 1: and said I miss you. Oh oh yeah. It's It's
- 2:28Speaker 1: News's Alpu season for sure, And like it's so funny
- 2:33Speaker 1: because I got the text and it was like cinematic.
- 2:35Speaker 1: I got the text. And you know, when I have
- 2:38Speaker 1: like breakups with people that like waste my time, I
- 2:41Speaker 1: put next to their contact do not text in all caps.
- 2:45Speaker 1: I know, I've looked through your phone. But the thing
- 2:47Speaker 1: is that you don't follow your own rules frequently text
- 2:51Speaker 1: people that you write do not text next Okay, frequently,
- 2:55Speaker 1: but not always, because sometimes it does work, and sometimes,
- 2:57Speaker 1: like I have, I have been in the car going
- 3:00Speaker 1: to change the music on your phone and I'll say,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you have a text from do not parentheses, do not text?
- 3:09Speaker 1: Why are they texting you? Yeah? Yeah, yeah? Why are
- 3:11Speaker 1: you in conversation with them? Yeah? And this is one
- 3:13Speaker 1: of those scenarios where I was like, I know exactly
- 3:16Speaker 1: what's happening because we hadn't talked in so long, and
- 3:19Speaker 1: Rose I dragged him immediately. I said, I like, he
- 3:23Speaker 1: sent me a bunch of things that was like, oh,
- 3:24Speaker 1: I want to visit you in l a blah blah blah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: And I responded, I said, so you've been listening to
- 3:29Speaker 1: the new scissah you And he said he was like, okay, accurate, drag.
- 3:36Speaker 1: You got his ass. But that's the thing is, like
- 3:39Speaker 1: SAYSSA really does make music for like people that are
- 3:43Speaker 1: experiencing breakups and like girls with intrusive thoughts like that
- 3:47Speaker 1: is the boss. Yes, I'm definitely more in the second camp.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I will say I have been loving the album since
- 3:54Speaker 1: I listened to it. It's not necessarily making me feel anything,
- 3:58Speaker 1: but I think that's just because I'm like dead inside.
- 4:02Speaker 1: But I am vibing to it immensely and haven't been
- 4:06Speaker 1: able to listen to anything else all weekend. Yeah. I
- 4:10Speaker 1: also like can't turn it off, like I am addicted.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I love love. It's like everything that I wanted out
- 4:17Speaker 1: of her, honestly, and you know, like they're and some
- 4:19Speaker 1: things that I wasn't expecting to get from her, like
- 4:22Speaker 1: the whole like pop punk vibe of it, the the
- 4:25Speaker 1: F to F of it all, which is is that
- 4:27Speaker 1: female to female? No, maybe it sounds like a fiction
- 4:33Speaker 1: F T F trans Um. I used to tell my
- 4:37Speaker 1: friend who did steroids that he was an M to
- 4:39Speaker 1: M trans man. Don't cancel me, Um, that's not not
- 4:43Speaker 1: not true. It's not not true. Um. Yeah, I I
- 4:46Speaker 1: really wasn't expecting that on the album. I guess I
- 4:50Speaker 1: didn't really know what to expect, So I'm just happily
- 4:53Speaker 1: receiving this album. Yeah, yeah, yeah exactly. But what I
- 4:57Speaker 1: meant to like, what I was trying to say, it's
- 4:59Speaker 1: just like that I'm grateful, honestly that she doesn't release
- 5:02Speaker 1: music that often, Like there's a preciousness now to the
- 5:06Speaker 1: work of Acissa album that I can cherish. That is,
- 5:11Speaker 1: I think something that's really great about anticipating someone for me,
- 5:15Speaker 1: someone like Sissa, And you know, I'm less likely to
- 5:18Speaker 1: pick it apart or get mad about certain things because
- 5:21Speaker 1: I'm just grateful to have Sissa um as opposed to
- 5:24Speaker 1: like another artist that releases, you know, an album every
- 5:27Speaker 1: other year or whatever. Yeah, I mean it is. It
- 5:30Speaker 1: is interesting that both Sissa and Lana released new music
- 5:37Speaker 1: in the same week. Um Lana released her the first
- 5:41Speaker 1: single of her new album, did you Know There's a
- 5:43Speaker 1: Tunnel Under Ocean Boulevard, which I love. And these are
- 5:48Speaker 1: two artists who I would say have like somewhat similar sensibilities,
- 5:52Speaker 1: like not necessarily make the same kind of music, but
- 5:55Speaker 1: make thematically similar like sad girl music but are yeah
- 6:01Speaker 1: but are but are almost girls with intrusive thoughts and
- 6:04Speaker 1: fat asses. But they are almost diametrically opposed in the
- 6:09Speaker 1: way that they release music. Because a Lana is super prolific.
- 6:13Speaker 1: You know, she releases an album every two years, if
- 6:18Speaker 1: not more, and has since the start of her career,
- 6:21Speaker 1: and there is a real sense that like she is
- 6:26Speaker 1: constantly making art and wanting to immediately put it out
- 6:31Speaker 1: and like has that relationship with her fan base. And
- 6:34Speaker 1: I don't know if it's because she feels pressured to
- 6:37Speaker 1: or if that's just she just is producing on that
- 6:41Speaker 1: level where she wants to be constantly sharing it, whereas
- 6:44Speaker 1: someone like Scissa seems to really want to be like
- 6:47Speaker 1: perfecting it and only putting on something when it's like
- 6:51Speaker 1: really is completed and cohesive. Um. And I mean also
- 6:55Speaker 1: we don't know what the whole like business side of
- 6:58Speaker 1: it is behind the scenes, but like obviously there has
- 7:01Speaker 1: been this long running joke about how we're always waiting
- 7:04Speaker 1: on this as an album. She had said something last
- 7:07Speaker 1: week about how a bunch of people who she wanted
- 7:10Speaker 1: to feature on the album didn't turn in their verses
- 7:12Speaker 1: on time, and I saw someone tweet like they probably
- 7:14Speaker 1: thought they had a lot longer before they needed to
- 7:18Speaker 1: way we could features. I'm sure, but I'm glad to
- 7:22Speaker 1: read it. I'm glad we got the ones that we
- 7:25Speaker 1: did because the Phoebe song is so good, so fucking cool.
- 7:29Speaker 1: I I loved it. Wait, I don't want to lose
- 7:31Speaker 1: the thread. But I have to ask you, does Lana
- 7:33Speaker 1: have a fat ass or does she just make music
- 7:37Speaker 1: for girls with asses. I think she makes music for
- 7:40Speaker 1: both girls with fat asses and girls with flat asses. Yeah,
- 7:43Speaker 1: that's what I was saying. I was thinking more flat,
- 7:45Speaker 1: but you know, I could see girls with flat asses
- 7:47Speaker 1: who want to have fat asses on the Phoebe song. Okay,
- 7:51Speaker 1: I already told you I'm not going to tell the
- 7:53Speaker 1: versions because it was too sacred of an experience. But
- 7:55Speaker 1: I had like an out of body, like near spiritual
- 7:57Speaker 1: experience with this song, driving in my car with something
- 7:59Speaker 1: that happened to me. Um, I was shook by how
- 8:02Speaker 1: when Phoebe's verse drops, it's almost like a new It
- 8:06Speaker 1: sounds like just it drops in like a Phoebe song,
- 8:09Speaker 1: Like it's so crystallinely clearly just Phoebe. And I was
- 8:14Speaker 1: shocked by that, honestly, that it wasn't like run through
- 8:17Speaker 1: the mill of like sciss is kind of like layered
- 8:21Speaker 1: you know, landscaping production. Um, until there's like a little
- 8:26Speaker 1: voice distortion at the end. But I loved it. I
- 8:28Speaker 1: mean it was really unexpected. Yeah, Drobbes verse, Phoebe's verse
- 8:33Speaker 1: does sounds like it could be right off Punisher. Yeah,
- 8:37Speaker 1: and that's what I like that when an artist brings
- 8:41Speaker 1: another artist on and lets them do what they do.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You know. I actually felt a lot like that when
- 8:51Speaker 1: Um Midnights came out and Lana was on Snow on
- 8:55Speaker 1: the Beach, Like, I think she was perfectly utilized in
- 8:58Speaker 1: a way that is very true to who Laana is
- 9:01Speaker 1: as an artist. And yeah, I do. I do think
- 9:03Speaker 1: Sissa used or or collaborated with Phoebe in the same way. Um.
- 9:10Speaker 1: You know, some my favorite songs um are obviously the
- 9:13Speaker 1: Phoebe song r F to F. I also really like
- 9:16Speaker 1: Gone Girl, Um not just for the you know, amazing
- 9:20Speaker 1: amy of it all, So I think it's it's just
- 9:23Speaker 1: like a really fun, pretty song. What are some of
- 9:27Speaker 1: your faves so far? I mean, I do love the
- 9:30Speaker 1: Phoebe song. I love love language, Scissa sampling herself like
- 9:36Speaker 1: it was so good, And then like the orchestra after
- 9:40Speaker 1: she samples herself in that song, it's like, so, I
- 9:44Speaker 1: just like I appreciate, you know, much like the way
- 9:46Speaker 1: she used Phoebe. Scissa like sees like features and sees
- 9:51Speaker 1: so many different she takes inspiration from so many different
- 9:54Speaker 1: genres and like the way she creates this kind of
- 9:57Speaker 1: tapestry of music. I think it's like over and over again,
- 10:00Speaker 1: so captivating and so a genre right, Like she fus
- 10:05Speaker 1: with like multiple genres within her own and it's almost
- 10:09Speaker 1: as if she used Phoebe as like not used that's
- 10:12Speaker 1: like I don't want it to be like, you know, pejorative,
- 10:14Speaker 1: but it's almost like Phoebe was like an instrument, like
- 10:16Speaker 1: a beautiful instrument to lay within the canvas of her work.
- 10:21Speaker 1: And I found that over and over again with stuff
- 10:23Speaker 1: like um with Gone Girl. Definitely, I think F to
- 10:27Speaker 1: F is like another moment where I was just like damn,
- 10:29Speaker 1: like you really can explore all genres and uh and
- 10:35Speaker 1: or I'm actually forgiveless where she like did the Vespertine
- 10:39Speaker 1: like the York sample, taking the little choir from the background.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I was like, damn, this is like so good and
- 10:45Speaker 1: I love just thinking about Scissla listening to York. That's
- 10:48Speaker 1: what I'm saying, Like you know that their work is
- 10:52Speaker 1: in conversation, like regardless of like how far away you
- 10:55Speaker 1: might see, they're like respective like art forms, Like their
- 10:59Speaker 1: work is in conversation and you can I don't know.
- 11:02Speaker 1: I just appreciate Sissa on the production level. UM, and
- 11:06Speaker 1: I have also been like day one, siss A stand
- 11:09Speaker 1: like sweet November sis A stand for sure. Wait, I
- 11:12Speaker 1: don't want to, you know, non consensually. Uh uh make
- 11:16Speaker 1: you listen to any White Lotus discourse? But like can
- 11:20Speaker 1: I I I exist on the internet. You know I
- 11:25Speaker 1: haven't watched this season. I'm not going to. I just
- 11:28Speaker 1: I just don't care. Um. But because I haven't watched
- 11:31Speaker 1: the season, I would love to get, like your t
- 11:34Speaker 1: L d R what you thought of it as a whole,
- 11:37Speaker 1: since I'm not going to watch it, and then I
- 11:40Speaker 1: truly never want to hear about it again until you
- 11:44Speaker 1: know the next season inevitably comes out. By the way,
- 11:47Speaker 1: spoilers for this season of The White Lotus if you
- 11:50Speaker 1: haven't watched and want to or um, haven't watched the
- 11:54Speaker 1: finale yet. Something that I think was super fascinating and
- 11:57Speaker 1: like a joy to watch that I like, honestly, it's
- 12:00Speaker 1: a conversation I'm not saying anywhere else. Is like the
- 12:02Speaker 1: function of like sex work in this season, Like have
- 12:06Speaker 1: you been hearing at all about like the kind of
- 12:09Speaker 1: two sex worker characters in the show I have the
- 12:13Speaker 1: phrase white Lotus muted on Twitter for the reason. Okay,
- 12:19Speaker 1: so I mean there are two central characters also have
- 12:21Speaker 1: ava max muted. Oh. I would that would maybe be
- 12:25Speaker 1: fun one day for us to go through and share
- 12:27Speaker 1: some of our muted I have ava max muted on Spotify. Unfortunately, UM,
- 12:33Speaker 1: I don't know what my muted Twitter words are. I'd
- 12:34Speaker 1: have to check. Um probably elon um. Okay, so white Lotus, Um.
- 12:40Speaker 1: There are these two sex workers that are kind of
- 12:42Speaker 1: central characters integral to the plot. In fact, they're actually
- 12:45Speaker 1: like the driving force behind a lot of pin plot
- 12:48Speaker 1: points throughout the show. And I would say there are
- 12:51Speaker 1: I think four sex workers total that come in and
- 12:54Speaker 1: out of the series and function some way within the
- 12:58Speaker 1: plot and Rose so many different sex workers are hired
- 13:03Speaker 1: or engaged with, like on a professional level, like for
- 13:06Speaker 1: their profession, and each character who hires a sex worker
- 13:10Speaker 1: does it for like a completely different reason, a completely
- 13:13Speaker 1: different motive, a completely different world. And some of these
- 13:16Speaker 1: characters are people that you would never either wouldn't expect
- 13:20Speaker 1: to use, use, or engage with sex work or hated
- 13:23Speaker 1: sex workers at the beginning of the series, and so
- 13:27Speaker 1: like I just like honestly thought that was like interesting
- 13:31Speaker 1: to see how sex workers like move lives, like move
- 13:35Speaker 1: characters and move plat points, and they were kind of
- 13:38Speaker 1: the fan favorite characters like I'm sure you've seen you're
- 13:40Speaker 1: seeing like pictures of them with a little like Bob
- 13:42Speaker 1: or whatever, the girl with the I have kind of
- 13:46Speaker 1: trained my brain to immediately identify white later screenshots and
- 13:50Speaker 1: just scrawl past. Speaking of sex work, Um, I saw
- 13:56Speaker 1: the menu this weekend and really liked it, and I
- 14:00Speaker 1: you have you haven't seen it yet, right, No? I have,
- 14:03Speaker 1: So I won't spoil anything for you because you do
- 14:07Speaker 1: want to see it, Yes, I do, Okay, So I
- 14:10Speaker 1: want you to go into it without spoilers, obviously, but
- 14:13Speaker 1: I want to put a pin in this and come
- 14:15Speaker 1: back and talk about what you think about the way
- 14:18Speaker 1: sex work is depicted in the menu because it is
- 14:24Speaker 1: um but but generally, I really liked the movie and
- 14:27Speaker 1: had a lot of fun watching it and thought it
- 14:28Speaker 1: was super funny and like at least somewhat incisive. So we'll,
- 14:33Speaker 1: you know, we'll catch up on that when when you've
- 14:35Speaker 1: seen it. Look, I'm here for Anna Taylor Joy and
- 14:38Speaker 1: Nicholas Holt and Judith lte Judith like kind of criminally
- 14:42Speaker 1: under used in the film, which is which is very unensembly,
- 14:46Speaker 1: but she could have had She was kind of one
- 14:49Speaker 1: note through the entire movie and could have had much
- 14:52Speaker 1: more to do. But I still enjoyed it, and I
- 14:54Speaker 1: also enjoyed um. I saw it at Lincoln Center at
- 14:58Speaker 1: the Lincoln Center AMC with my other It was the
- 15:00Speaker 1: first time I had been to an AMC since I
- 15:03Speaker 1: saw Tar and I was just so happy to see
- 15:07Speaker 1: Nicole again. I missed her. I was the only one
- 15:09Speaker 1: who applauded at the end of her of her monologue,
- 15:13Speaker 1: Listen Virgins, Rose Phoebe and I have created a survey,
- 15:18Speaker 1: a listener survey just for you, and we are not
- 15:21Speaker 1: harvesting your data. This is literally just so you can,
- 15:24Speaker 1: you know, shape the show and make it even more
- 15:26Speaker 1: fun than it already is. And we have loved the
- 15:28Speaker 1: responses we've got so far. Rose has peeked in you
- 15:31Speaker 1: peeked in the responses? Yes, yes, I I read through
- 15:34Speaker 1: most of them. Uh that at the end of the
- 15:36Speaker 1: first day the survey was out and I was very
- 15:39Speaker 1: honestly no homo touched by how many people responded to
- 15:45Speaker 1: the survey, how really thoughtful your responses were and how
- 15:51Speaker 1: much you love the show? Um, it's so really keep
- 15:55Speaker 1: them coming. Some of y'all love the show almost too much.
- 15:58Speaker 1: I was kind of like, Okay, where's the negative feedback? Like,
- 16:00Speaker 1: come on, no, I don't say that I don't know.
- 16:04Speaker 1: Please don't send us negative feedback. But we do want ideas,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and we love the ideas that we've been seeing so far.
- 16:09Speaker 1: So click the link in the show notes to you know,
- 16:13Speaker 1: fill out like a three minute survey and uh, you
- 16:16Speaker 1: might win a virgin hat and who doesn't want a
- 16:20Speaker 1: virgin hat? But more important, you are part of a collective.
- 16:23Speaker 1: You are participating in an incredible community. That is, you're
- 16:28Speaker 1: you're rocking the Vote Yes, vote now, as RuPaul says,
- 16:33Speaker 1: as RuPaul makes drag Queens say at the end of
- 16:36Speaker 1: every episode of Drag Race, vote to to to to
- 16:40Speaker 1: the moon, the moon, to the moon, Turn the mound
- 17:01Speaker 1: may mean Macy, are you? I feel like I do
- 17:03Speaker 1: know this about you? But are you a big gamer? Um?
- 17:07Speaker 1: So I go through phases um where I am inspired
- 17:12Speaker 1: to game, and then I will take it. I'll like
- 17:16Speaker 1: really like binge out on it, and then I'll take
- 17:19Speaker 1: a break for a while, but um yeah, I go
- 17:22Speaker 1: through I go through seasons of gaming. Okay, do you
- 17:25Speaker 1: have a particular like style of game that you like.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Not that I'm like super literate on them, but I
- 17:31Speaker 1: feel like they're like they're sort of like the tried
- 17:34Speaker 1: and true, you know, models of game I love. I
- 17:38Speaker 1: love you trying to like parse your way through like
- 17:41Speaker 1: video game any language. It's actually incredible because Rose like
- 17:44Speaker 1: doesn't know I wasn't really I'm not. I'm not a gamer,
- 17:47Speaker 1: but like I know, like the my my main experience
- 17:50Speaker 1: with video games is like this one Wizard of Oz
- 17:53Speaker 1: Nintendo game that I used to play when I was little,
- 17:55Speaker 1: and then um like creating uh slurs in some kind
- 18:01Speaker 1: of wrestling game. Of course they were always always women,
- 18:05Speaker 1: and like as soon as the actual game had to start,
- 18:07Speaker 1: I lost interest. I was only so, were you ever
- 18:11Speaker 1: into sims because that's a big I was. But like,
- 18:15Speaker 1: I mean, this is so kind of cliche or becaues
- 18:18Speaker 1: It's not. Maybe I'm just like a twisted person, but
- 18:21Speaker 1: all I would do is use the hack you like,
- 18:24Speaker 1: rosebud Um, like build the house and then kill the
- 18:28Speaker 1: sims as soon as yeah yeah, and then like sometimes
- 18:31Speaker 1: you could add in nudity, so it's like rich nude
- 18:35Speaker 1: death like didn't I didn't know about that, but okay,
- 18:38Speaker 1: So so what I like is either a third person
- 18:44Speaker 1: action game which is your classic like tomb Writer or
- 18:49Speaker 1: g t A where you see the person running, because
- 18:52Speaker 1: I too love like a create I create a sim
- 18:55Speaker 1: type vibe where you're putting a character together and you
- 19:00Speaker 1: to see it. Um. I don't do first person shooters. UM.
- 19:05Speaker 1: I like an open world, but that's not necessarily um required.
- 19:10Speaker 1: But yeah, I leve a level creator or if they
- 19:12Speaker 1: have provided a County Little Um main character, that's great too.
- 19:19Speaker 1: And two is not the ultimate County main character, but
- 19:23Speaker 1: Ms Laura herself exactly the original original since so oh
- 19:34Speaker 1: that was gonna be. My question is how long tomb
- 19:36Speaker 1: Rat has been around, because it feels like she's been
- 19:38Speaker 1: with us forever, and in a way, she kind of has.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Did you start Did you start playing tomb Rat when
- 19:45Speaker 1: it first came out? Yes, well no, I think I
- 19:49Speaker 1: started at tomb ratar to, which came out in nineties seven. Um,
- 19:56Speaker 1: and my mom was a babysitter and so we would
- 20:02Speaker 1: when she put the kids down for a nap, we
- 20:05Speaker 1: would like play tomb Rater and that was like my
- 20:07Speaker 1: intro to tomb Rater. And we played all the PS
- 20:11Speaker 1: one games into the PS two games and that was like,
- 20:14Speaker 1: that was how I came to tom Rater. Did you
- 20:17Speaker 1: get to dress Laura Croft up? Or? Was she was
- 20:21Speaker 1: her outfit kind of fixed because she has such a
- 20:24Speaker 1: defined look. M it was. It was fixed from I
- 20:28Speaker 1: think one too, tom Rat one, tom Rat three. It
- 20:33Speaker 1: was pretty much all of that one outfit except there
- 20:36Speaker 1: were there was like a wetsuit. There was like a
- 20:39Speaker 1: cold version with like a bomber jacket and then hard
- 20:43Speaker 1: through not box exactly exactly, no matter what huge tits
- 20:51Speaker 1: ass out legs out like the whole bit for all
- 20:56Speaker 1: that like Spellun games, she was doing literally everywhere that
- 20:59Speaker 1: she she was she was totally impractical. Um and then
- 21:03Speaker 1: there was like yeah, they got like a she got
- 21:05Speaker 1: like a matrix suit at one point, probably after the
- 21:08Speaker 1: matrix came out, like they were just like throw that
- 21:10Speaker 1: in there. And then now the most recent game she's
- 21:14Speaker 1: like ari I like very practical and really sucks. Not
- 21:20Speaker 1: not ari I. It is it's giving ls. Yes, it's
- 21:24Speaker 1: they've like it's giving Paragon Sports it's giving, like it's
- 21:28Speaker 1: giving all of that. It's like really a bummer. So
- 21:31Speaker 1: is his lacross thing, Like is she a superhero or
- 21:35Speaker 1: is she just like extremely rich like Batman? She's Batman.
- 21:40Speaker 1: She's Batman. Okay, So she just has like lots of
- 21:44Speaker 1: training and tech and she is an adventurer. Yes, her
- 21:50Speaker 1: backstory is that she's a Pulitzer Prise winning photo journalist. No,
- 21:55Speaker 1: you're kidding me. No, I'm not joking. And her fun
- 22:00Speaker 1: other Instagram. It's huge on Instagram. Yeah, she's done so many,
- 22:08Speaker 1: not geo covers in the game. She actually invented Instagram. Now,
- 22:14Speaker 1: her father's name is like Rupert Cross. I forget her
- 22:17Speaker 1: dad's name, but he was like an Indiana Jones type
- 22:21Speaker 1: like before she was born. And so a lot of
- 22:24Speaker 1: the games are like like Batman is like my dead
- 22:26Speaker 1: daddy who died on the in the field. I'm continuing
- 22:32Speaker 1: his legacy and taking all these photos like sometimes like
- 22:37Speaker 1: restoring artifacts, sometimes like taking an artifact. It's like that
- 22:42Speaker 1: it's all this stuff that has to do with her
- 22:43Speaker 1: personal lore and like the like things that she learned
- 22:47Speaker 1: from her father, and like, yeah, it's it's very Batman. Yeah,
- 22:52Speaker 1: is she um respectful of the cultures that she's um
- 22:57Speaker 1: the tombs she's rating. I mean, I might be biased,
- 23:02Speaker 1: but I think my overall memory is yes. Because the
- 23:10Speaker 1: in the original like plans for the game, she was
- 23:12Speaker 1: supposed to be like a hired gun who was like
- 23:15Speaker 1: stealing things for these mega rich people. But in the
- 23:19Speaker 1: one that actually came out, she's like a lone operator
- 23:23Speaker 1: or she's like often restoring things or like correcting things
- 23:27Speaker 1: or stopping people from stealing artifacts that would change the
- 23:30Speaker 1: course of history. Um, but she does have like a
- 23:34Speaker 1: ship ton of artifacts like at her house. Yeah, I
- 23:38Speaker 1: feel I feel like I feel like it's there's a
- 23:40Speaker 1: fine there's a fine line there. She's maybe she's maybe
- 23:43Speaker 1: giving like um Xena Warrior Princess a little in which
- 23:46Speaker 1: like Zena's whole thing was, you know, she was like
- 23:48Speaker 1: making up for being having been a warlord. So Laura
- 23:53Speaker 1: Croft has some she's done some questionable things, and now
- 23:56Speaker 1: she's got a little bit of a she's got a karma.
- 24:00Speaker 1: Is my boyfriend. She's like, I'm restoring all these stolen
- 24:05Speaker 1: artifacts that were stolen by me. Yeah, it's me, Hi,
- 24:12Speaker 1: I am the problem. It's me. I did not know
- 24:15Speaker 1: that Zena was a warlord. That's actually crazy, but honestly,
- 24:19Speaker 1: it's called Zena Warlord, warhawk. Imperialist princess um Xena climate
- 24:29Speaker 1: change denier turned to activist princess, yeah, like a little
- 24:35Speaker 1: and is Greta is Greta Tunberg. But I don't, Mazie,
- 24:41Speaker 1: I don't think you're being biased. I'm just I'm willing
- 24:43Speaker 1: to subscribe to to the belief that, you know. Tomb
- 24:46Speaker 1: Raider was like the kind of ethical response to Indiana Jones,
- 24:50Speaker 1: because I do feel like Indiana Jones, like when we
- 24:53Speaker 1: look at it now, like everyone's always like, oh my god,
- 24:55Speaker 1: it's a problematic and you're colonizer or whatever, and it's
- 24:59Speaker 1: all about the stolen of artifacts and like and then
- 25:01Speaker 1: Tom Reader was like, but I'm a girl, and yeah, yeah,
- 25:06Speaker 1: I think that they and I think they attempted that
- 25:11Speaker 1: but maybe didn't do it with like the deftist hand,
- 25:14Speaker 1: and like in the New One, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah yeah.
- 25:20Speaker 1: In the New Ones, they like, um, they they're really
- 25:25Speaker 1: you can tell that they really are like trying to
- 25:27Speaker 1: be careful with that line and like she's like doing research,
- 25:31Speaker 1: she's like she's so weird. In the New Game, she's
- 25:34Speaker 1: like talk now, she's not well in the movie. In
- 25:40Speaker 1: the Alicia of the Candor movie, she's a fucking bike
- 25:43Speaker 1: messenger who then lives rich. How it's also not Alicia
- 25:49Speaker 1: Vickender who, Oh my god, don't she's She's in The
- 25:54Speaker 1: Danish Girl, right, yes, which has never been any redman as.
- 26:00Speaker 1: But but why does it all come back to the
- 26:05Speaker 1: Danish Girl. I feel like we've brought it up several
- 26:08Speaker 1: times on this podcast. I think she won the Oscar
- 26:10Speaker 1: for the Danish Girl to like everyone she did she did.
- 26:16Speaker 1: Um so brave of her to appear in a movie
- 26:19Speaker 1: about Danish people. I would love to hear while we're
- 26:23Speaker 1: on the movies. Actually, so I've seen I I don't
- 26:26Speaker 1: know if I've seen the tomb Raters sequel, but I
- 26:28Speaker 1: have seen the o G and I have seen the
- 26:30Speaker 1: Atlicia vit Kender one. Okay, well, speaking of Danish, speaking
- 26:35Speaker 1: of Danish people, and the tomb Rater's sequel. Um. The
- 26:38Speaker 1: person who directed the tomb Raters sequel's name is um Jandabant,
- 26:47Speaker 1: and he also directed Speed and Twister, which I did
- 26:51Speaker 1: not Wow. What an incredible filmography. I love Speed and
- 26:56Speaker 1: I love Twister yeah, and then he did Laura Croft, Colin,
- 27:02Speaker 1: Tomb Writer, Dash, The Cradle of Life. Okay, So I
- 27:07Speaker 1: remember the movies as being kind of magical, maybe in
- 27:11Speaker 1: a way that the games weren't. I don't know. The
- 27:14Speaker 1: games were always pretty magical. They always had it always
- 27:17Speaker 1: got um you like later in the game there was
- 27:21Speaker 1: always it like was revealed that there was a supernatural
- 27:24Speaker 1: element happening. But yeah, the movie from the Job is
- 27:29Speaker 1: like Illuminati, um the like it's like the changing of
- 27:35Speaker 1: the celestial Like I don't know, I don't know what. Yeah,
- 27:42Speaker 1: we're talking about the plot. We're talking about the plot
- 27:44Speaker 1: as if it mattered to anyone in this film or
- 27:47Speaker 1: like anyone who watches it was no, no, I just
- 27:51Speaker 1: the only thing I really remember was that Angelia and
- 27:54Speaker 1: Julie's real life dad, who she was a strange from,
- 27:57Speaker 1: played her dad in the movie, John John White. Yeah. Yeah,
- 28:02Speaker 1: and it was there like it was their first like,
- 28:05Speaker 1: um really, it was like their reunion was on this movie.
- 28:09Speaker 1: And then I think right after the movie they like
- 28:11Speaker 1: went back to being Yeah. He was like, well I
- 28:14Speaker 1: did it for the check and now I'm out. I
- 28:17Speaker 1: love that. Like everyone involved was like, yeah, this kind
- 28:20Speaker 1: of like healing reparative, like reunion of two estranged souls
- 28:25Speaker 1: is going to come together? On Laura Croft to writer, right,
- 28:29Speaker 1: what a space to work through your trauma? Like, come on,
- 28:32Speaker 1: that's probably superstar celebrity family like therapy. Like what the fuck? Well?
- 28:39Speaker 1: I mean that this was when did the first two
- 28:42Speaker 1: movie come out two thousand and one, and then number
- 28:46Speaker 1: two came out in two thousand three, So this was
- 28:50Speaker 1: peak Angelina being like most famous actress in the world. Yeah,
- 28:57Speaker 1: and so it but also like was this kind of
- 29:00Speaker 1: like the beginning of her sort of um like re
- 29:05Speaker 1: contextualization as someone who was like a little bit more
- 29:08Speaker 1: serious And maybe that's why the dad reconciliation happened. Maybe yeah,
- 29:14Speaker 1: because it's like I'm I'm a big box office star.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Now I'm not just this wild child who's swapping vials
- 29:20Speaker 1: of blood and making out with my brother. I have
- 29:24Speaker 1: my ship together. I mean, Tomb Writer at the time
- 29:28Speaker 1: was the biggest grossing film with a female headlining lead.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Um and then like the but the like Them DVD
- 29:41Speaker 1: sales like doubled after that, so it was a huge phenomenon. Um. So,
- 29:47Speaker 1: I mean, honestly, I can see John voit signing on
- 29:52Speaker 1: for the jack. It's like it was huge, you know.
- 29:57Speaker 1: I am so fascinated by just like the how big
- 30:01Speaker 1: it became immediately, Like it's like I'm looking back on
- 30:05Speaker 1: like I don't really I didn't really remember much about
- 30:07Speaker 1: it because I don't think I watched them as a kid.
- 30:09Speaker 1: But like you just think, like, oh, like this, it's
- 30:11Speaker 1: just a franchise that is like in large part, you
- 30:14Speaker 1: know about breasts and in small part about a lot
- 30:17Speaker 1: of other things, but like guns yeah, yeah, and guns
- 30:20Speaker 1: were guns yeah, but something that like I I felt
- 30:28Speaker 1: like and I I could be totally fudging this. I'm
- 30:30Speaker 1: the true virgin of this conversation, so I have seen
- 30:33Speaker 1: a few things. But I actually didn't even know that
- 30:35Speaker 1: Angelina Jolie made out with her brother, which I will
- 30:37Speaker 1: want context on in a second, like when I did
- 30:41Speaker 1: not know when it comes to like her in this role, though,
- 30:44Speaker 1: I do feel like she took something that's like really shallow.
- 30:47Speaker 1: I think she does this with a lot of her roles, right,
- 30:49Speaker 1: It's like she takes something that's really shallow, like she
- 30:51Speaker 1: takes a bimbo archetype or something that just doesn't have
- 30:55Speaker 1: a lot of depth to it. And she kind of
- 30:57Speaker 1: adds this like darkness and this ad assery and becomes
- 31:01Speaker 1: something that like both men and women like want to
- 31:04Speaker 1: like consume and look at. Yeah, she is a BiCon
- 31:09Speaker 1: and I think she does that with a lot of
- 31:10Speaker 1: her roles and that that's like really shown in something
- 31:13Speaker 1: that is like something as kind of trash as tomb
- 31:15Speaker 1: raader Um She'll say trash, but you know, yeah, like
- 31:20Speaker 1: how dare you? Um? The fan base loved the movies
- 31:26Speaker 1: because it gave the it gave she had gravitas and
- 31:32Speaker 1: she did she she like didn't play it as not hot,
- 31:38Speaker 1: but she did. She played it more as like the
- 31:43Speaker 1: focus was the kind of Indiana Jones aspect of that character.
- 31:48Speaker 1: She's like primarily a photojournalists, like primarily like the gun
- 31:58Speaker 1: woman and like and interested in like this the like
- 32:03Speaker 1: um mission at hand. You know. Um, So what was
- 32:18Speaker 1: your when you first watched the movies? Like what was
- 32:21Speaker 1: your impression like going into I just we haven't even
- 32:23Speaker 1: gotten to talk about like your journey with it or
- 32:26Speaker 1: like whether it's like you're analogy what you liked about
- 32:29Speaker 1: it then or what you like about it now or
- 32:31Speaker 1: I just would love to hear about your relationship to
- 32:32Speaker 1: like lac so I like I immediately. I mean, I
- 32:35Speaker 1: would have loved it even if it was awful, And
- 32:39Speaker 1: I mean I've watched it a lot over the years.
- 32:41Speaker 1: I don't think it's an awful movie. It's it's pretty
- 32:44Speaker 1: like standard, but it's it's not bad. But I my
- 32:48Speaker 1: like most distinct memory of seeing it in the theater
- 32:51Speaker 1: with my mom was there's a scene where Daniel Craig
- 32:54Speaker 1: comes out of the shower with his towel low slung
- 32:58Speaker 1: on his hips, and I got the biggest like pre boner,
- 33:03Speaker 1: like heart palpitations and not like visible boner, but like
- 33:08Speaker 1: I was just like, what's happening? And and I have
- 33:12Speaker 1: so much though that I had to tell my mom afterwards.
- 33:15Speaker 1: I was like, I feel really because we were like
- 33:17Speaker 1: Christian or whatever. I was like, I've I don't know
- 33:21Speaker 1: what's happening, and I feel really bad, and she's like, oh,
- 33:24Speaker 1: it's it's fine. Like nudity can make you feel weird,
- 33:29Speaker 1: it's not even it's like girls shirtless shirtless is nudity
- 33:34Speaker 1: when you're a Christian. Let's be clear, like that, it's true.
- 33:37Speaker 1: It's true. There's wrist as nudity. I remember really enjoying it.
- 33:46Speaker 1: But I think it was because of the of the
- 33:53Speaker 1: like girl boss nous of it all, Like just that
- 33:56Speaker 1: wasn't a lot of like female lead stuff at the time.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Um and a strong woman. Yeah, and I, oh, you
- 34:06Speaker 1: know what I'm recalling now is that I did have
- 34:09Speaker 1: a Lara Croft action figure, which one I don't I
- 34:13Speaker 1: think it was must have been one of the earliest
- 34:15Speaker 1: ones because like late I think, maybe even before the
- 34:19Speaker 1: movie came out, because I think I went into um
- 34:23Speaker 1: the store that it's what what game Stop is now,
- 34:27Speaker 1: but it used to be called something else before that.
- 34:30Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, or at least it wasn't my mall.
- 34:34Speaker 1: And I remember, like so at that point in my childhood,
- 34:39Speaker 1: girl action figures were what I was allowed to have
- 34:42Speaker 1: instead of dolls because I couldn't have dolls obviously, because
- 34:46Speaker 1: you know, not for boys. Um and so I would
- 34:51Speaker 1: find the most fem action figure possible. And I think
- 34:54Speaker 1: when I bought that Lara Croft action figure, I didn't
- 34:58Speaker 1: even know what tomb Writer was, but I was just like, Oh,
- 35:01Speaker 1: here's this like hot bitch that I can play with,
- 35:04Speaker 1: and I bought her. Yeah, I mean that she is
- 35:09Speaker 1: like a perfect um a perfect like mirror in that way,
- 35:17Speaker 1: because it's like she's so cunt. It's not so porny
- 35:22Speaker 1: that you like feel weird about it, but it is
- 35:26Speaker 1: porny enough that like a parent can look at it
- 35:30Speaker 1: and be like, oh, this kid is like horny for
- 35:33Speaker 1: this doll. That's why. That's why this kid wants it. Yeah,
- 35:37Speaker 1: he loves her jugs or and it's like yes, but
- 35:41Speaker 1: like not because the way you're thinking about it exactly exactly.
- 35:46Speaker 1: So she's she like there's a lot to like be
- 35:49Speaker 1: reflected upon Lara Croft. You know, yes, and she is
- 35:52Speaker 1: she is, but a vessel because like she it doesn't
- 35:55Speaker 1: sound like she has much of a personality. Is that
- 35:59Speaker 1: rude of me to say? I know it's not rude
- 36:02Speaker 1: of you to say, but um, she is reserved, and
- 36:06Speaker 1: I maybe it's just because I've spent so much time
- 36:09Speaker 1: with the games. It's like she's cold. But I do
- 36:14Speaker 1: think she has a personality. And that's why I like
- 36:17Speaker 1: the new games are such a travesty to me, because
- 36:20Speaker 1: while the gameplay is good and the graphics are good
- 36:23Speaker 1: and everything, she used to have these like one liners
- 36:28Speaker 1: where she would like do a somersault into a cave
- 36:31Speaker 1: and like shoot a guy and be like sucks to
- 36:34Speaker 1: be don't like not that, but it was like it's
- 36:37Speaker 1: like she had this like May West thing going on
- 36:42Speaker 1: where she was like sexy and and violent or like,
- 36:48Speaker 1: oh my god, who played Austin Powers Dad Michael Caine,
- 36:52Speaker 1: Michael Caine, Michael Caine. She had this like kind of
- 36:54Speaker 1: like Michael Caine, like I don't know, it was like
- 36:57Speaker 1: this weird um yeah, one liner are kind of like
- 37:01Speaker 1: May West Samantha thing going on, but like with violence.
- 37:05Speaker 1: So that's such a personality. And now I'm just imagining
- 37:08Speaker 1: Samantha Jones as Laura Croft like that's that's why she's
- 37:13Speaker 1: not on and just like that, she's pivoted to being
- 37:15Speaker 1: a photojournalist adventurer, and I am unfortunately imagining her like
- 37:21Speaker 1: like going into a cave stealing like a thousands year
- 37:24Speaker 1: old artifact and going oh oh, you know kind of
- 37:27Speaker 1: like likes like ceremonial dag, why don't you stab me?
- 37:33Speaker 1: Oh yeah, um yeah, I I think that like honestly
- 37:40Speaker 1: thinking about like her her character as an archetype or
- 37:43Speaker 1: like what the the video game world that she belonged
- 37:48Speaker 1: to before that, right, like Final Fantasy Street Fighter Mortal
- 37:51Speaker 1: Kombat or whatever, which was as kind of Rose was
- 37:54Speaker 1: saying at the beginning of this conversation, like you know,
- 37:57Speaker 1: big booby girls with long hair, maybe too words, and
- 38:00Speaker 1: they're wearing like basically like three pieces of fabric, you
- 38:04Speaker 1: know what I mean. And that's like what you know,
- 38:07Speaker 1: maybe part of like who she was in the legacy
- 38:10Speaker 1: of And I feel like, I don't know, seeing her
- 38:13Speaker 1: on screen or like seeing what like Angelina brought her,
- 38:18Speaker 1: uh like made it into something that was like I
- 38:21Speaker 1: don't know, like that we could engage with, like beyond
- 38:24Speaker 1: like I guess what like the male gaze was on it,
- 38:27Speaker 1: not to be like totally like you know, intellectual about it,
- 38:30Speaker 1: but like it was just fun like and I think
- 38:32Speaker 1: that like we can go all like a lot of
- 38:34Speaker 1: people can be like, oh, it's like so girl bosster,
- 38:37Speaker 1: like now that Lesha Vikander wears like ari I and
- 38:39Speaker 1: has her Camella pot sponsorship or whatever, like it's like feminists,
- 38:45Speaker 1: but it actually is, like it's not even about that.
- 38:47Speaker 1: It's just about like the magnanimous nous that like made
- 38:50Speaker 1: her character like human and three dimensional. And I don't
- 38:53Speaker 1: think that really exists in a lot of video game
- 38:56Speaker 1: characters prior. Yeah, and especially if you're not a gamer,
- 39:00Speaker 1: you're just seeing this image of this like this girl
- 39:04Speaker 1: that because previously in video games, it's like the girl
- 39:07Speaker 1: was always like you know, it's like kind of like nonverbal,
- 39:14Speaker 1: just like tits um. But like Angelina really like breathed
- 39:19Speaker 1: life for especially people who hadn't interacted with the games
- 39:23Speaker 1: and like gave it this like rounder um understanding and
- 39:28Speaker 1: like brought our culture. Um yeah, because this was also
- 39:33Speaker 1: I was just looking it up. Angelina won her Oscar
- 39:37Speaker 1: in two thousand because um, girl interrupted came out so
- 39:42Speaker 1: like she was sort of like at her peak of
- 39:44Speaker 1: being a serious actress coming into this franchise, like kind
- 39:49Speaker 1: of the way that we see with franchises now, we're
- 39:51Speaker 1: like Marvel picks up all of these like big stars
- 39:54Speaker 1: to come in and like make the like shooting lasers
- 39:57Speaker 1: at each other seem a little bit more wait wady Um.
- 40:02Speaker 1: So I guess Angelina was kind of, you know, the
- 40:04Speaker 1: at the forefront of that movement totally, and like this
- 40:10Speaker 1: movie like really had a big impact on her life
- 40:14Speaker 1: because it was shot in Cambodia and that was where
- 40:19Speaker 1: she started like her whole like activism career is based
- 40:22Speaker 1: around Cambodia, which is like um, but for better words,
- 40:27Speaker 1: I don't know, like there have been stories about her
- 40:29Speaker 1: being kind of weird with the people in Cambodia, but
- 40:32Speaker 1: she did that documentary, um not without my father or something.
- 40:38Speaker 1: I forget what like you know about um about the
- 40:42Speaker 1: children in Cambodia. But um. But yeah, it's like I
- 40:47Speaker 1: think this movie like really like defined her career and
- 40:51Speaker 1: her personal life in a lot of ways, which is
- 40:55Speaker 1: interesting because her career, I think so many parts of
- 40:59Speaker 1: her career have defined the way she's viewed, like made
- 41:03Speaker 1: like more than more than I think any of the
- 41:06Speaker 1: big like movie stars who and and like that's that's
- 41:10Speaker 1: such a part of the conversation now that like we
- 41:12Speaker 1: don't have movie stars anymore. But Angelina like went through
- 41:15Speaker 1: so many different eras you know, she was like the
- 41:18Speaker 1: bad girl who was like fucking Billy Bob Thornton and
- 41:21Speaker 1: the limo on the way to the Gone sixty seconds
- 41:23Speaker 1: from here, and then she was like the action star
- 41:26Speaker 1: and the activist, and then she was Branngelina. She was
- 41:30Speaker 1: you know the like home Wrecker turned like a list couple. Um,
- 41:35Speaker 1: and now I mean everything is so consumed by like
- 41:38Speaker 1: what's going on between her and Brad Pitt and you
- 41:42Speaker 1: know the like abuse allegations. Yeah, it really is awful.
- 41:45Speaker 1: But she like she has really lived so many public
- 41:50Speaker 1: lives it's crazy. Yeah, it's very Elizabeth Taylor. She's got
- 41:54Speaker 1: a very Taylor thing going on. What are like some
- 41:58Speaker 1: of the like similarities to you, because I actually don't
- 42:00Speaker 1: know that much about Elizabeth Taylor either, unfortunately, I think honestly,
- 42:04Speaker 1: I mean, Elizabeth Taylor was kind of defined by her
- 42:08Speaker 1: husband's and her weight, like for better or worse, Like
- 42:11Speaker 1: that's kind of that was kind of the story during
- 42:13Speaker 1: while she was alive. It's like Joan River, that's like
- 42:16Speaker 1: what Joan Rivers would talk about when she talked about
- 42:19Speaker 1: Elizabeth Taylor. But she, yeah, she has she she has
- 42:24Speaker 1: all these like visual eras you could say like Elizabeth
- 42:27Speaker 1: Taylor seventies like caftans, you could say Elizabeth Taylor like sixties,
- 42:33Speaker 1: which is like a defined like makeup style or like
- 42:36Speaker 1: earlier is like cat on a hot tin roof. And
- 42:40Speaker 1: then like her later career where she's like this fabulous
- 42:42Speaker 1: old woman and she's got the fragrances and and she
- 42:47Speaker 1: does like little weird fun project like the flint Stones. Yes, yeah,
- 42:54Speaker 1: I still like maybe like Elizabeth Taylor and Angelina Jolie,
- 42:58Speaker 1: like they both have this kind of like darkness right,
- 43:02Speaker 1: Like it's like it's like a darkness. It's like, um
- 43:06Speaker 1: a gumption. Um, you like understand that a lot of
- 43:09Speaker 1: their characters are like maybe a little a little tortured
- 43:13Speaker 1: or like have been through some show or maybe a
- 43:15Speaker 1: little bit of a woman on the verge of a
- 43:16Speaker 1: nervous breakdown, and yet their characterization still has this like impermeability,
- 43:21Speaker 1: like really unfazed, really untouchable. Like I think of Angelina
- 43:25Speaker 1: Jolie as like someone who plays a lot of indestructible characters.
- 43:30Speaker 1: Um yeah, and I guess yeah, I kind of now
- 43:33Speaker 1: I'm I see like the kind of lineage I had
- 43:36Speaker 1: a triumph over struggle. Yeah, it's like always coming out
- 43:39Speaker 1: on top or always like reinventing yourself, um, despite like
- 43:44Speaker 1: everyone kind of being against you or like putting you
- 43:47Speaker 1: into some like weird box that you're not consenting to
- 43:50Speaker 1: be in, and um coming out as like a movie
- 43:54Speaker 1: star at the end of it. You know. And I
- 43:57Speaker 1: also had no idea when I was like reading before
- 44:00Speaker 1: the record I had no idea that she like had
- 44:03Speaker 1: a psychotic break when she was like, you know, I
- 44:06Speaker 1: think nineteen or twenty, and that was like part of
- 44:09Speaker 1: the reason she took on the Girl Interrupted role. Did
- 44:13Speaker 1: you know that rule? I had no idea. I did
- 44:16Speaker 1: not know that, although I was obsessed with Girl Interrupted
- 44:21Speaker 1: when it came out. I mean, I don't think I
- 44:24Speaker 1: saw it in theaters because I think I was too young,
- 44:27Speaker 1: but it was it was on HBO like once a
- 44:31Speaker 1: day a year or two thousand and I watched it
- 44:35Speaker 1: every time it was on, and I was obsessed with it,
- 44:38Speaker 1: Like it's such an incredible movie. Her performance and it
- 44:42Speaker 1: is insane. And I don't mean that like you know
- 44:46Speaker 1: in the and I mean that both like and that
- 44:48Speaker 1: she did a good job playing someone who you know
- 44:51Speaker 1: is institutionalized, and also like it's she's so good. Yeah,
- 44:56Speaker 1: she really is such a like Razor's Edge in that movie,
- 45:00Speaker 1: because it's like at the beginning, you're she like does
- 45:04Speaker 1: such a great job of like sucking you in and
- 45:07Speaker 1: being like, oh, I'm like the most relatable person here
- 45:12Speaker 1: that Winder and writer can be friends with. And then
- 45:15Speaker 1: she has the most normal yes, and then she has
- 45:18Speaker 1: these really cruel moments with like Brittany Murphy's character and
- 45:23Speaker 1: she's just like everybody knows. Everybody knows that, yeah, but
- 45:28Speaker 1: what they don't know is that you like Likesery Chicken. O. God,
- 45:34Speaker 1: the cast of that movie, it's like literally icons only.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Yeah when known Angelina, Brittany fucking Elizabeth Moss. Whoopee, Elizabeth
- 45:46Speaker 1: Moss is in it. Wait, I don't remember. She's the
- 45:49Speaker 1: girl who's like all burned. Oh, Elizabeth Moss has been
- 45:54Speaker 1: around forever. I blot it out. She played a girl
- 45:58Speaker 1: who was burned. She probably beat out close for the role,
- 46:01Speaker 1: like she did. Yeah, that sounds kind of shocked. Yeah,
- 46:11Speaker 1: is that your favorite Angelina performance? Rose Um, It's it's
- 46:18Speaker 1: that or Mr Mrs Smith. I mean, Mr Mrs Smith
- 46:21Speaker 1: is so fun, it's just perfect. It's so it's so different. Yeah,
- 46:26Speaker 1: I mean Angelina's performance in in Girl in dropt It
- 46:30Speaker 1: is my favorite. But I think the movie I enjoy
- 46:32Speaker 1: watching the most is Mr and Mrs Smith. Like what
- 46:36Speaker 1: a moment in pop culture and like celebrity gossip culture,
- 46:43Speaker 1: Like whoa. Yeah. Also, I didn't realize that was a
- 46:46Speaker 1: remake until like a week ago, and now it's being
- 46:50Speaker 1: remade again as a t show. Yeah yeah, yeah, but yeah,
- 46:54Speaker 1: the whole, the whole like um that really like cemented her.
- 46:59Speaker 1: Was that whole thing with breaking up Jen and Brad
- 47:03Speaker 1: seem Angelina team team Jen because like I mean, you know,
- 47:09Speaker 1: like Jennifer Anderson was America's sweetheart and she and Brad
- 47:12Speaker 1: were the perfect couple. And then Angelina, like you know,
- 47:16Speaker 1: have this reputation as this like brown haired harlot. Literally
- 47:22Speaker 1: that's how media works. It's like if you have brown hair,
- 47:25Speaker 1: yes you're evil. I was gonna say that you you.
- 47:28Speaker 1: We cannot over emphasize how culturally important that she was
- 47:32Speaker 1: a Burnett likes the many and Veronica of it all. Yes,
- 47:35Speaker 1: and they were like Jen and Angelina were foils for
- 47:39Speaker 1: each other, like they were the good angel and the
- 47:41Speaker 1: dark Angel in the public eye. And so it was
- 47:43Speaker 1: the perfect love not a love trangle, but the perfect
- 47:47Speaker 1: like drama love triangle. Well also, it's like Jennifer Anderson
- 47:52Speaker 1: is like friends and the craziest she ever got was
- 47:55Speaker 1: like The Good Girl where she showed her tids and
- 47:58Speaker 1: then Angelina, oh yeah yeah and the Good Girl with
- 48:05Speaker 1: Jake Jillen home um where she like a girl is
- 48:09Speaker 1: so weird. It's like she's playing like a like CVS
- 48:12Speaker 1: employee or something, and it's like she like just repeated
- 48:16Speaker 1: it with Cake years later, like she's like, please give
- 48:19Speaker 1: me oscar, Like she tried so hard with Cake. I
- 48:24Speaker 1: felt it was Honestly, I was so sad. I was
- 48:26Speaker 1: like a girl, you can I believe in you, but
- 48:28Speaker 1: like it's not. But it's like, yeah, she was like
- 48:32Speaker 1: friends and like all these romantic comedies and then Angelina
- 48:35Speaker 1: was like tomb writer girl interrupted, Like it was like
- 48:40Speaker 1: literally could not be more diametrically opposed. And just like
- 48:45Speaker 1: watching the movie and because you you, like all the
- 48:49Speaker 1: news stories were like Brad and Angelina's like had such
- 48:52Speaker 1: incredible chemistry that like it just was overwhelming, and then
- 48:56Speaker 1: you watched the movie and you can see it because
- 49:00Speaker 1: they really do. That movie is sold by the like
- 49:06Speaker 1: truly like astronomical chemistry they have, yeah, horny horn or
- 49:13Speaker 1: horny oh my god. That fight they have at the
- 49:16Speaker 1: end and their house is like I mean, now it's
- 49:19Speaker 1: weird looking back on it with like the context of everything,
- 49:22Speaker 1: but like at the time was so hot. Is your
- 49:39Speaker 1: faith like Angelina performance Lara Croft or is it do
- 49:42Speaker 1: you have other fave Angelina moments in her heart story. Well, um,
- 49:48Speaker 1: I do have a soft spot for salt which came
- 49:52Speaker 1: Salt is so good? So where is Saltz to Pepper?
- 49:58Speaker 1: Which was originally written for Tom Cruise. I just found
- 50:01Speaker 1: out recently they were like, let's do the all male
- 50:04Speaker 1: reboot of Yeah, no, the first one was written for
- 50:08Speaker 1: Tom Cruise and then he hadn't dropped out and they
- 50:11Speaker 1: were like, what about Angelina. Oh, I didn't know that.
- 50:15Speaker 1: That's amazing, But in that movie are incredible and they're
- 50:20Speaker 1: Ricky's n Y c there and is there a bachelorette party.
- 50:26Speaker 1: There's a plot point where she has to bleach her
- 50:28Speaker 1: hair blonde, like in the bathroom, I think, and she
- 50:31Speaker 1: does it with like box dye and it comes out
- 50:33Speaker 1: like perfectly tongued, like ice ice blonde, which is actually
- 50:38Speaker 1: something that's that happens also in I don't know if
- 50:40Speaker 1: you've ever seen Red Sparrow, that spy movie with general
- 50:45Speaker 1: between that it actually is really good, but it's kind
- 50:48Speaker 1: of the same thing where she's like going undercover and
- 50:50Speaker 1: she dyes her hair blonde, and it's like she uses
- 50:53Speaker 1: one box and like her hair is perfectly, perfectly Jennifer
- 50:57Speaker 1: Lawrence blonde. I love her. I love any time a
- 51:02Speaker 1: character has to duck into a bathroom and die there
- 51:04Speaker 1: there like a Gone girl and alias like or any
- 51:09Speaker 1: wig action movie. Angelina has done a lot of wig
- 51:12Speaker 1: forward films and she does not have a wig face,
- 51:16Speaker 1: and so it's it's really right, tell us why, tell
- 51:21Speaker 1: us why. I don't know what it is, proportionally or whatever,
- 51:24Speaker 1: but it's like she it's just the clock ey ist
- 51:27Speaker 1: wig you've ever seen every time, and I'm sure they're
- 51:30Speaker 1: beautifully made wigs, but it's like, have you ever seen
- 51:33Speaker 1: um Life or something like it? No, Um, it's she
- 51:38Speaker 1: plays like a morning I mean, she's really trying to
- 51:42Speaker 1: go for like a Jennifer Aniston thing here, but it's
- 51:44Speaker 1: like she plays like a morning news anchor who like
- 51:47Speaker 1: sees that she's going to die and then she like
- 51:50Speaker 1: has to live her life differently because she's been like
- 51:53Speaker 1: living so bad. It's like kind of a scrooge thing. Um.
- 51:58Speaker 1: But she has like a blonde, curly wig in that
- 52:01Speaker 1: movie and it looks so stupid. It's so great, But
- 52:06Speaker 1: probably her best one is either um girl interrupted that
- 52:11Speaker 1: look great if it was a wig, I'm assuming it
- 52:13Speaker 1: is or honestly, the gone in sixty seconds dreadlocks were us.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Maybe she got them for real. Maybe she got them
- 52:25Speaker 1: for real. You know, I've actually touched one of her wigs,
- 52:30Speaker 1: which one so in in early I did a set
- 52:34Speaker 1: visit to UM, the Eternals set. Oh my god, it
- 52:38Speaker 1: was like the last day of filming and they brought
- 52:41Speaker 1: us into UM one of the hair and makeup trailers,
- 52:45Speaker 1: and Angelina's wig was just sitting there on ahead, and
- 52:49Speaker 1: like the person was like, that's Angelina's wig, And I
- 52:52Speaker 1: just went right over to it and touched it, because
- 52:54Speaker 1: please don't do that, but I had to. She is
- 53:00Speaker 1: a view on the side a drone like hit me
- 53:04Speaker 1: from outside honestly starts you out with like the like
- 53:08Speaker 1: claw machine thing. It was like that scene in The
- 53:11Speaker 1: Matrix where they unhook YANU. Wait, what is her hair
- 53:15Speaker 1: in that movie? It's blonde. It's blonde. Okay, she doesn't
- 53:20Speaker 1: do it's a it's a very cool toned blonde. It was.
- 53:24Speaker 1: It was definitely distracting. I honestly, the revelation that she
- 53:27Speaker 1: doesn't have a face for wigs because her face is
- 53:30Speaker 1: already so incredible is honestly, that's I'm never not going
- 53:33Speaker 1: to think about that. And I think it affected Rosen
- 53:36Speaker 1: Eye's viewing of The Eternals because when we were watching it,
- 53:39Speaker 1: she's not even really in that movie that much, and
- 53:42Speaker 1: we could not stop giggling because she just like every frame,
- 53:47Speaker 1: it's just like she looks like the after in the
- 53:50Speaker 1: before and after at the esthetician's office, like she looks
- 53:52Speaker 1: like three days ago. It's like like that and just
- 53:56Speaker 1: like that where they show carry her face of what
- 53:59Speaker 1: it what it could look like after they do a
- 54:02Speaker 1: bunch of plastic surgery on her, and like she's always
- 54:04Speaker 1: just like like so like Serene just I mean, she's
- 54:08Speaker 1: a little snatched. She's always been so snatched. That's why,
- 54:11Speaker 1: Like when she had short hair, it looked so incredible.
- 54:15Speaker 1: I mean, Macie, that short hair you give Angelina, Like
- 54:21Speaker 1: what are you talking about? And I think you have
- 54:25Speaker 1: like such a like singular look and like I think
- 54:29Speaker 1: you have very Angelina energy. Oh my god, that's like
- 54:33Speaker 1: the biggest compliment I've ever gotten. Thank you. I would agree, honestly,
- 54:38Speaker 1: they're just they're they're defining features that someone like Angelina
- 54:41Speaker 1: Jolie has, where like women growing up were like I
- 54:44Speaker 1: want to look like Angelina, and like, I feel like
- 54:47Speaker 1: my mom loved Angelina growing up despite being like a
- 54:49Speaker 1: devout Christian, like she was just like mine too. Women
- 54:52Speaker 1: love her, loved her, She was the ideal and so
- 54:55Speaker 1: that's honestly why it was like so jarring for her
- 54:58Speaker 1: to do Maleficent with like her her like born this way,
- 55:01Speaker 1: like her, like her her. Yeah, that that Gaga era
- 55:07Speaker 1: like and her her cheekbones were so severe and you're like,
- 55:10Speaker 1: whoa like seeing like it was it was a lot.
- 55:13Speaker 1: It's very but she looked incredible. She looks so cool
- 55:17Speaker 1: and maleficent. She looks so fucking cool and maleficent. And
- 55:20Speaker 1: that might have been a wig, but I think it
- 55:22Speaker 1: worked because it was pretty much like her hair, the cheekbones,
- 55:27Speaker 1: which I think, like when I saw them, it was like,
- 55:29Speaker 1: aren't those just her cheekbones? But I guess they were
- 55:33Speaker 1: like prosthetics, but I would have absolutely believed that that
- 55:37Speaker 1: was just her face. Well, it's it is kind of
- 55:40Speaker 1: like she and I mean, I don't know, I like
- 55:43Speaker 1: it's weird, Like I don't want to like comment on
- 55:45Speaker 1: her like body or whatever, but it is like it's
- 55:48Speaker 1: like the distinct later era. It's like she's so thin
- 55:52Speaker 1: and so like severe, and she doesn't really do interviews
- 55:57Speaker 1: and like she's like such a like far Way figure.
- 56:01Speaker 1: It's like she's really like done this weird, Like she's
- 56:04Speaker 1: like a weird like Hollywood like ghoul. I don't know.
- 56:08Speaker 1: So it's very brain the leg. Do you remember the leg? Yes,
- 56:15Speaker 1: it's like I'm just this like thin with a leg. Yes, yes,
- 56:24Speaker 1: she just kind of floats along. Yeah, with like her
- 56:28Speaker 1: her like big eyes and huge tits because like the
- 56:31Speaker 1: tits have always remained very large. Yeah, Oh my god,
- 56:35Speaker 1: I forgot about the leg. That's that was such a
- 56:37Speaker 1: genius moment. The leg was like, I think like the
- 56:41Speaker 1: first time I understood meme culture because it was the
- 56:46Speaker 1: only thing you could see on the internet for can
- 56:50Speaker 1: you describe the leg for the Virgin? So it was
- 56:52Speaker 1: it was the Oscars one year Whereina just wore this
- 56:55Speaker 1: dress that were that was like truly cut up to
- 56:58Speaker 1: the pubis and and it was like black and all
- 57:01Speaker 1: you could see was just her leg sticking out. Well,
- 57:05Speaker 1: I need to make one correction because it was kind
- 57:07Speaker 1: of a normal dress with a slit. But what Angelina
- 57:11Speaker 1: did was she kind of had it opened a little
- 57:14Speaker 1: to the side and then had the leg like hooked
- 57:18Speaker 1: out of the of the dress. Of the leg, it's
- 57:21Speaker 1: very much giving like the Show Girls poster, like it's
- 57:26Speaker 1: like cut out of her body. But it was that
- 57:31Speaker 1: in real life. Yeah, it literally was that. That's such
- 57:34Speaker 1: a good appealeg gool with a leg is so funny.
- 57:39Speaker 1: That is that should be the title of this episode
- 57:42Speaker 1: with a leg. It is so funny because Google googles
- 57:46Speaker 1: are like so ugly, but she is ghoulish, and she's
- 57:49Speaker 1: drop dead gorgeous. Like she'soolish and gorgeous. She really kind
- 57:56Speaker 1: of like invented that vibe because even even some of
- 58:01Speaker 1: her early performances where she's like at her you know,
- 58:04Speaker 1: like hottest, she is still giving gool like girl interrupted
- 58:09Speaker 1: his super googlie. I've never seen Gia but well, like,
- 58:14Speaker 1: I mean literally playing a dead person. I don't even
- 58:21Speaker 1: know that. I don't even what is about again, it's gay, right,
- 58:25Speaker 1: She's a gay model who contracts HIV and tragically of
- 58:31Speaker 1: an overdose. Yeah wait, I literally did not know that. Wow,
- 58:36Speaker 1: Oh it's great. She is amazing. She is amazing. Oh
- 58:40Speaker 1: my god. It was like one of her first breakout roles.
- 58:42Speaker 1: So it's also like kind of a trip to see
- 58:45Speaker 1: Angelina like really young and like really tearing it like
- 58:49Speaker 1: it's really good. Another movie that used to be on
- 58:52Speaker 1: HBO a lot, but like old after a certain point
- 58:54Speaker 1: at night. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That was like
- 58:58Speaker 1: it was like if they had like a prestige version
- 59:01Speaker 1: of like a skin Amax movie, you know. Yeah, yeah,
- 59:05Speaker 1: that seems very much the vibe. I've never seen Hackers,
- 59:09Speaker 1: but is great. But that image is like so saturated.
- 59:14Speaker 1: She's such a you know, like perfect avatar of that
- 59:18Speaker 1: time in fashion and like pop culture, like that look
- 59:23Speaker 1: the short hair like very like technoi. She's so hot.
- 59:29Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, I mean that's like another amazing thing
- 59:33Speaker 1: about her is that she like she's such a chameleon.
- 59:37Speaker 1: She was so emblematic of that late nineties moment and
- 59:41Speaker 1: like that like dragon arm tattoo, like low slung pants,
- 59:48Speaker 1: like short, crapped hair like wild child, and then like yeah,
- 59:53Speaker 1: and then moving into the two thousands, like celeb culture
- 59:57Speaker 1: like in like like such a unique way it was
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: and like really a dominating way, you know, with the
- 1:00:06Speaker 1: Brad Pitt stuff. Yeah, I mean they were at one
- 1:00:09Speaker 1: point the most famous people in the world. Like the
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: brand Jelina of it all. That was when we started
- 1:00:16Speaker 1: combining people's names. I guess, yeah, oh my god, yeah
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: of course. Yeah. I'm honestly like realizing when you said, like, oh,
- 1:00:23Speaker 1: she doesn't really do interviews, I kind of forgot that
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: she does. Like she's very private, and I think that
- 1:00:27Speaker 1: that like she's been able to maintain her allure and
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: like her celebrity stature because of that. Like I think,
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: you know, when we talk about how there are no
- 1:00:36Speaker 1: movie stars anymore and how there aren't we were honestly
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: just saying there are no Angelina Jolies anymore, right, right,
- 1:00:43Speaker 1: but if there are any Angelina Jolies for this generation,
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: there on Instagram and Angelina Jolie. I mean, I don't
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: know if she's on Instagram, but she's like not on Instagram,
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: you know what I mean. Like, Yeah, there's no like
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: disillusionment around celebrities these days, or there's so much disillusionment
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: around celebrities. It was all about them of her, Yeah, yeah,
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: it was with her. It was all about secrets. Like
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: in the beginning, like with the like the crazy wild
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: child stuff, It's like what drugs that she on? Who
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: was she fucking blah blah blaha, and then the the
- 1:01:13Speaker 1: Brad stuff. It was like, oh my god, like how
- 1:01:16Speaker 1: did this happen? This behind the scenes like adultery and
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: then yeah, and yeah, she's just like very cloaked in mystery.
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: She she's an enigma wrapped in a mystery wrapped and
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: I don't know something she is another synonym, she's Dracula
- 1:01:36Speaker 1: kind of she is. Has she ever played a vampire?
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: Because she really should? She should. I don't know. I
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: mean I just I remember, like not even not even
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: like the movie itself, but when they first revealed her
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: look from a leficit like that was a moment, and yeah,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: it was like, oh, this is right, this is right. Yeah, completely, Well,
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: Maleficent is kind of a vampire. I wonder what her
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: um I'm trying to figure I'm trying to remember what
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: her exact character like characteristics were, and when she played
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: Bao Wolf's mom, since she was like she was like
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: booby mom monster like swamp swamp monster mom. I can't
- 1:02:21Speaker 1: even remember what do you remember anything from that movie? Yeah?
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: I mean that movie was That movie was so weird
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: because it was like all c g I. It was
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: like adult polar expressed, but like, I don't I'm not
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: super familiar with the plot of Bao Wolf, but I
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: know that he like has to It's like a it's
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: like was it Shakespeare. It's like an old like like
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: nurse something. It's it's one of the oldest texts in
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: the literary canon. But it's like this this monster named Grendel,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: and she's like, yeah, I remember, he has to like
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: go down into a cave and he's like praying to
- 1:03:01Speaker 1: this like golden pool of water, and all of a sudden,
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: like she comes out nude and honestly looks more like
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: tomb righter than ever because she's like this like kind
- 1:03:10Speaker 1: of braid and she's c G I and um, and
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: she's got heels and she's just like, I'm just looking
- 1:03:17Speaker 1: at pictures now she's wearing heels. It's wild. It's so weird. Yeah,
- 1:03:22Speaker 1: and then she's just like Hornie talking to the sun.
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: And then I think kind of dissolves or turns into
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: like a crazy looking monster. So I can't remember weird movie.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Maybe I'll maybe I'll need to go watch it. Yeah,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: that really didn't stand up. It really was that she's
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: she was living in the untranned Valley exactly exactly. That
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: should have been an action figure. Honestly, it's remarkable that
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: she hasn't played trans up into this point. But I
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: mean some of it feels like some of her characters
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: kind of are still trans Cannon, almost all of them.
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: I would, you know, she is the Deeva doll herself.
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: Like I think Angelina is like a little She's one
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: of the girls in a way. I mean, yeah, you
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: think about like like the song Vogue and they're talking
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: about like Bettie Davis, we love you, and it's like
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: if you just like kind of shift that idea onto
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: modern times, It's like she's definitely like the one. It's
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: like they're not saying like I mean, maybe some people
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: are saying, like Susan so Randon, we love you, Like
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: it's not love, Yeah, totally, It's like it's I love
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: Susan so Randon, but it's not quite the same thing.
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: You know. She's giving this like glam mysterious bitch thing
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: you know. Yeah, yeah, sexy demon vibes, Yeah yeah, slide
