- Good morning, I'm Kai Rivers and this is Studio Signal — the week ahead edition, brought to you by Harkins Capital. Let's talk about what's coming. Alright studio fam, after a truly wild week of C-suite shake-ups and monster box office runs, we're heading into a week that's all about the numbers. The first big wave of quarterly earnings is about to hit, and it's going to give us the first real report card for 2026. The main event, the one we'll all be watching, is Netflix, which is set to report its first-quarter earnings on Thursday, April 16th. This is a huge one. For the last year, the narrative has been all about their password-sharing crackdown and the ad-supported tier. Now, we get to see the data. The big question is whether that subscriber growth is sustainable and if the ad revenue is ramping up fast enough to impress Wall Street. Expect every analyst to be dissecting their average revenue per user and their content spend for the rest of the year. This report will set the tone not just for Netflix, but for the entire streaming market. Also on the earnings docket this week, we have UnitedHealth Group reporting on Wednesday. Now, I know, it's not a media company, but it's a Dow component and a massive bellwether for the health of the economy, which directly impacts advertising budgets and consumer spending on entertainment. So we'll be keeping an eye on it. On the tech side, we also get numbers from Ericsson on Friday, which will give us a read on the 5G and network infrastructure that all this streaming content relies on. Shifting from Wall Street to Las Vegas, the NAB Show, the massive trade show for broadcasters and content creators, officially kicks off its main exhibits on Monday. This is where companies show off the latest in production tech, from cameras to cloud workflows to, you guessed it, a whole lot of AI. We’ll be watching for announcements around new production tools and partnerships. This is less about consumer-facing news and more about the plumbing of the industry—the tech that will be creating your favorite shows and movies in the years to come. And on the content side, things are a little quieter this week as the industry holds its breath for the summer blockbuster season. But we do have a few notable releases. The biggest is probably Guy Ritchie's new film, 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare', which hits theaters on Friday. It's an action-comedy with a stacked cast, and it’ll be a good test of whether a non-franchise, star-driven film can still pull in a crowd. Over in streaming, A24's new series 'Sunny', starring Rashida Jones, lands on Apple TV+ this Wednesday. A24 has the magic touch right now, so a new series from them is always worth watching. So, as we head into the week, a few key questions are on my mind. First, can Netflix prove its growth strategy has long-term momentum, or was the password crackdown just a one-time sugar high? Their numbers on Thursday will have ripple effects across every streamer's stock. And second, after the absolute dominance of the 'Super Mario Galaxy Movie', will a film like 'The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare' remind the box office that original, star-powered action can still compete, or will the IP machine just keep winning? That's your signal for the week ahead. I'm Kai Rivers — rest up, because it's going to be a big one. See you tomorrow morning.
