- 0:09Speaker 1: What's happened everybody? How you feeling out there? Welcome into
- 0:12another edition of the Checko Daily. Andrew Dchecko here obviously
- 0:17giving you all of the news and notes for the
- 0:20Eagles and today in this case, it's an update because
- 0:24Howie Roseman never sleeps.
- 0:25Speaker 2: You have your August trade.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I'm sitting there writing my story Ondrew Kennel, which if
- 0:30you're listening to this Tuesday morning, it's on Inside the
- 0:33Birds dot Com. And now I'm going for a nice
- 0:36stroll here on this beautiful Monday evening. But I didn't
- 0:39want to leave you hanging. The Eagles pull off a trade.
- 0:42They send defensive tackle Thomas Booker the fourth to the
- 0:47Las Vegas Raiders for cornerback Jacory and Bennett, who I
- 0:50really like coming out of the twenty twenty three draft,
- 0:53fourth round pick. Obviously, if you followed my work, you
- 0:57know that I follow the Maryland program pretty closely.
- 1:00Speaker 2: And this is a twitchy, athletic corner that the.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Eagles are getting, and he has really good ball skills.
- 1:05Eleven pass breakups's played in two seasons, twenty four games,
- 1:10eleven starts, five ft eleven one hundred and ninety five
- 1:13pounds fast. This is a fast corner and he's an
- 1:16outside corner, which makes this addition interesting. So obviously the
- 1:20first question is how does he fit and will he
- 1:24be involved in the two man cornerback competition with Keithy
- 1:29Ringo and veteran of Dori Jackson. My answer is I
- 1:33would assume so, because when you add a player of
- 1:36that quality who has started games in the NFL, I
- 1:40think that it lends itself to adding another name into
- 1:42the mix. Which is also interesting because Eli Rix, the
- 1:45Eagles third year corner, is also put together a nice camp.
- 1:49But I never got this sense that vic Fangio was
- 1:52overwhelmed by the cornerback play that he was receiving from
- 1:56Ringo and Jackson, and at every turn he sort of
- 2:00offered a relatively lukewarm response. And even today he had
- 2:05a response that you can kind of poke in pride,
- 2:07interpret it any way that you like. But when I
- 2:10asked about the competition how it's going, he said, it's close.
- 2:14I think that both of them are having a good camp,
- 2:16but it's close. And been happy with both of them,
- 2:19and we'll see. Now if you've been keeping score at
- 2:22home or reading my training camp, observations which I post
- 2:24daily and inside the birds dot Com. You know that
- 2:28leading up to today, it had been a Dori Jackson
- 2:31opening with the first team for five practices, Kiei Ringo
- 2:34for three. Well, on day nine, Kilei Ringo opened with
- 2:37the first team, So now you have five and four.
- 2:40That's a balanced display how they're sort of handling the
- 2:44first team reps. Now, both players have certainly worked in
- 2:48but the fact that nine days in a camp and
- 2:50it is early, I want to emphasize that the fact
- 2:53that they're still toggling between the two and neither one
- 2:56has really done enough to separate themselves from the pack,
- 2:59and it's it's still something I'm expecting to really play
- 3:02out in the preseason. The fact that you're adding another name,
- 3:06another young corner, Jacoreyan Bennett is twenty four years old,
- 3:10suggests that you're trying to add more competition. And it
- 3:13struck me listening to Vic Vangio on Monday morning that
- 3:18the fact that he's sort of still trying to figure
- 3:21out what he has in those two corners suggested to
- 3:24me that the Eagles would possibly look to add another
- 3:28name to that room just because you want to continue
- 3:32to promote competition and see if you were able to
- 3:34get the best player of that group. So I'm expecting
- 3:38Jacorey and Bennett to start, or I should say I'm
- 3:41expecting him to enter the cornerback competition for a chance
- 3:45to start along with Ringo and along with a Dori Jackson.
- 3:49He obviously has to get to Philadelphia and start to
- 3:52learn a pretty complex playbook in terms of Vic Fangio's defense,
- 3:57but he's going to have an opportunity and that's an
- 4:00interesting addition for the Eagles. Now.
- 4:02Speaker 2: It was a player for player trade.
- 4:03Speaker 1: So I should also mention that Thomas Booker the fourth
- 4:07he was putting together a pretty nice training camp for
- 4:09the second consecutive year. In fact, he had a couple
- 4:12of pass breakups today, getting his hand up at the
- 4:14line of scrimmage, and just a really disrupting player who
- 4:19also saw a ton of reps throughout camp. So it
- 4:22means a lot of things obviously the Raiders, and there
- 4:25are some Eagles ties there of course, probably that which
- 4:29probably played into it, But the Raiders are looking at
- 4:31Thomas Booker as a player who can add a developmental
- 4:36piece or some depth to their defensive line and Booker
- 4:39was really the fifth defensive tackle here. Ty Robinson was
- 4:42the fourth, and therefore he wasn't going to play a
- 4:46ton here.
- 4:46Speaker 2: He didn't play a ton last year.
- 4:48Speaker 1: But what always struck me with Thomas Booker was relentless
- 4:51effort and the ability to use leverage to his advantage
- 4:54to be disruptive along the interior. I saw that in
- 4:57camp last year, I saw it in camp this year,
- 5:00and you also saw it play out in the regular
- 5:02season and at times in the regular season, because there's
- 5:05a play in which I can remember him tracking down
- 5:07a screen pass against the Falcons that I think really
- 5:10embodies the effort and the just the determination and pursuit
- 5:15to the football that Thomas Booker has always displayed.
- 5:19Speaker 2: Whenever we've been able to see him on the field.
- 5:22Speaker 1: And it could also mean a number of different things,
- 5:26and you never want to get too carried away. But
- 5:28earlier in training camp, Vic Vangio spoke highly of two
- 5:32young defensive tackles, or at least seemed intrigued about two
- 5:36young defensive tackles, and that was Byron Young, who the
- 5:38Eagles acquired via waivers prior to last season. He didn't
- 5:43not end up playing any game for the Eagles, but
- 5:47he was around for the offseason and now he had
- 5:50some nice moments in training camp, but he was sidelined
- 5:53Monday with a groin injury.
- 5:55Speaker 2: So that's something to keep an eye on. But in
- 5:56my opinion, in.
- 5:57Speaker 1: My estimation based on what I've seen and when I
- 6:00I've been able to observe through nine practices. And this
- 6:02is a name that if you follow my work and
- 6:05you should leading up the training camp, one of my
- 6:08six players under the radar that I told you to
- 6:11keep an eye on. He was on my pre camp
- 6:12fifty three man roster and he's had a nice start
- 6:15to camp and that is second year defensive tackle Gabe
- 6:18Hall from Baylor. Gabe Hall entered my notebook. I should
- 6:23say I wrote down number ninety six in my notebook
- 6:25multiple times. Today he stormed or on Monday, he stormed
- 6:28into the backfield on multiple occasions, probably picks up a
- 6:31sack if it was a game situation in one of
- 6:34those instances. And he didn't do a whole lot last
- 6:38training camp, but he was on the practice squad last
- 6:40year and I think that that afforded him the opportunity
- 6:43to be a part of it and grow and develop
- 6:45under defensive lineman Clint Hurt.
- 6:47Speaker 2: If you listen to my.
- 6:49Speaker 1: Inside the Locker Room podcast, I spoke to Gabe Hall
- 6:53on one occasion last year, and I talked to him
- 6:55a couple of different times, and I was just checking
- 6:59in on his development, how things were going, because I
- 7:01did really like his tape at Baylor, and he has
- 7:05one of those coveted locker stalls for practice squad players
- 7:07where it was on the it was a wall locker.
- 7:09It was on the perimeter, so was Andre SAMs, but
- 7:13it kind of, you know, it's one of those little
- 7:15subtleties that you can kind of pick at and maybe
- 7:19use that to color the way that you believe the
- 7:22team views him. And that was somebody who has active
- 7:25roster potential. Now, he was never elevated last season at
- 7:28any point, but he was able to be around and
- 7:31grow and be a part of those those meetings and
- 7:34all of that. And I think what you're seeing now
- 7:35is a player who has increased confidence. And that's something
- 7:39that I've said about a lot of these young players
- 7:41that you're seeing now a merge a year two. They're
- 7:44playing faster, they're playing with refined technique and for Gabe Hall,
- 7:49who can play every defensive every position on the defensive line,
- 7:52and ways about two ninety five, he spoke to me
- 7:54about going against Landon Dickerson every day in practice and
- 7:58that he whooped his ass how much that that helped
- 8:01him become better, become a better player.
- 8:05Speaker 2: And you're you're seeing some.
- 8:07Speaker 1: Of the results play out on the on the practice fields.
- 8:11And that's somebody that you guys should be keeping an
- 8:13eye on in the preseason because the Eagles, perhaps better
- 8:18than any team at least over the past couple of years,
- 8:21have done a remarkable job in player development, and it
- 8:24could be Gabe Hall, who's the next example. Also Byron Young,
- 8:29But we have to see again on the injury list
- 8:32with a groin injury, so we don't know if that's
- 8:35going to be something that lingers or if he'll be
- 8:37able to get back to action relatively soon. But this
- 8:40Eagles defensive line is already loaded. Thomas Booker wouldn't have
- 8:44played a ton had some value to another team. The
- 8:47Eagles have a young player who has made some plays
- 8:49in camp and is making a case for the fifty
- 8:52three man roster. Now, the second phase of this is
- 8:55translating what you saw on the practice field into game situations.
- 9:00Speaker 2: So those are my initial thoughts.
- 9:02Speaker 1: I think that's a stock up for Gabe Hall right now,
- 9:04and I think Jacoreyan Bennett has an opportunity here to
- 9:08enter the fray in terms of this starting cornerback position,
- 9:11but he does have to get up the speed relatively quickly.
- 9:15Well that's going to do it for this edition of
- 9:17the check Odaily. Just the quick thoughts on this trade
- 9:20that I wanted to give you guys because somebody reached
- 9:23out to me on X and I want to make
- 9:24sure that I got that to you guys before the
- 9:27day got away from me. It's another busy day, the
- 9:30final practice before there's the walk through Wednesday and then
- 9:33the game on Thursday. But you should be excited about
- 9:37that trade, or at least intrigued, because Jacoreyan Bennett can
- 9:40absolutely play, and he's somebody that I evaluated in the
- 9:45pre draft process.
- 9:46Speaker 2: So I really liked his tape.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And I thought he was an intriguing Day two or
- 9:50Day three prospect, and he sort of developed and was
- 9:54able to find his footing a little bit there at
- 9:56the Raiders. Active gets his hand on the football quite
- 9:59a bit, and I think working with defensive backs coach
- 10:02Christian Parker is going to help him a great deal
- 10:05really tap into that skill set that he has and
- 10:08really build on some of the flashes that we've seen
- 10:12through his first two seasons. Now, I'm not going to
- 10:14get into you, going to get into stats or anything
- 10:17like that, because he played in ten games last season,
- 10:20so sometimes those stats out there don't have a lot
- 10:23of context. I wouldn't do that to you, guys, But
- 10:25what I can tell you is is that he can play.
- 10:28And this is coming from somebody who evaluated him coming
- 10:30out of the twenty twenty three draft class. I'm gonna
- 10:33put a bow on this one. That's it for to
- 10:35check Odally. I'm Andrew Tochecko, and I'll catch you on
- 10:37the next one.
