- 0:45This is Laura Dirda with the Becker's Healthcare
- 0:47podcast. I'm thrilled today to be joined by
- 0:50Holly Lee, vice president and chief audit executive
- 0:52at Parkview Health. Holly, it's a pleasure to
- 0:55have you on the podcast today. Yeah. Thanks
- 0:57so much for having me. I'm excited for
- 0:59our conversation because I know there's so much
- 1:01happening in health care and particularly,
- 1:03just some really important things that you're doing
- 1:05at Parkview. So we'll dive into that. But
- 1:07before we begin, can you introduce yourself and
- 1:09just tell us a little bit more about
- 1:10the organization?
- 1:12Yes. Absolutely.
- 1:14So, again, Holly Lee, and I, I lead
- 1:16the internal audit function at Parkview Health for
- 1:19the health system.
- 1:21A little bit about Parkview, we're a not
- 1:23for profit health system. We serve
- 1:26Northeast Indiana and Northwest Ohio.
- 1:29Our mission is pretty simple, but it's also
- 1:31pretty powerful.
- 1:32We're focused on improving health and inspiring well-being.
- 1:36So for internal audit, really, our role in
- 1:39that is to provide assurance and insight that
- 1:41really helps Parkview achieve its mission
- 1:44from a responsible and ineffective
- 1:47perspective.
- 1:48So whether that's managing risk or staying compliant
- 1:51or finding ways to operate more efficiently,
- 1:54we're really focused about supporting great care for
- 1:57our patients in our communities.
- 2:00I love that. And, you know, what an
- 2:02important thing to be focused on, especially in
- 2:04a year so busy and transformative as 2026.
- 2:08But before we get into that, can you
- 2:09tell us a little bit about last year?
- 2:11What is the most important initiative that you
- 2:13did? What did you do, and what were
- 2:14the results?
- 2:16Yeah. So for last year,
- 2:18so I joined Parkview in 2023. And so
- 2:21moving into 2025,
- 2:23I was really focused on
- 2:25laying the foundation
- 2:26for what's known as integrated assurance. And we,
- 2:30you know, we did this by
- 2:32aligning enterprise risk management, which I'm sure a
- 2:35lot of us are familiar with.
- 2:37We align that within the internal audit function.
- 2:41And so the real idea is kinda simple
- 2:43and that we want to move beyond
- 2:45their traditional internal audit assurance role and create
- 2:49a more connected approach to risk oversight for
- 2:52the organization.
- 2:53Because when these two entities work together, you
- 2:55know, it should really enable leadership to get
- 2:58one clear view
- 2:59of risk and assurance
- 3:01across the organization instead of these fragmented reports.
- 3:05And so when I'm explaining this
- 3:07of thinking of it like coordinating care for
- 3:10a patient with multiple specialists,
- 3:13you know, if each doctor works in isolation,
- 3:16the patient runs a risk of getting conflicting
- 3:18treatments, and we can all understand what happens
- 3:21when when that occurs.
- 3:23But when we share information and follow a
- 3:26care plan, outcomes generally improve and risk go
- 3:29down.
- 3:30So that's really what integration
- 3:32integrated assurance is meant to do for an
- 3:34organization.
- 3:35It's to really treat the system as a
- 3:37whole and not just the individual risk symptoms
- 3:39in siloed functions.
- 3:42So for looking into 2026,
- 3:44this means we're gonna have to rethink some
- 3:46of our governance. We're gonna have to improve
- 3:48risk reporting for that single language, single lens
- 3:52to have and strengthen our strengthen our collaboration
- 3:55even more. And, you know, ultimately, the payoff
- 3:59from their work that we did last year
- 4:02is that we
- 4:03end up with a clear
- 4:05vision
- 4:06of emerging risk. You know, we have less
- 4:08duplication because we're leveraging,
- 4:10resources across these different silos, bringing them together.
- 4:14And we have more confidence in the decisions
- 4:17that shape our strategy here at Parkview.
- 4:20That's fascinating to hear about. You know, really
- 4:22cool to understand how you've been looking at,
- 4:25making sure that you've got a great
- 4:27plan in place to improve outcomes or improve,
- 4:30some of the results that you're seeing for
- 4:32patients and then looking at the governance and
- 4:34risk. I I know that's something that is
- 4:36no easy task, and so being able to,
- 4:39zero in on that in this next year
- 4:41and continue to,
- 4:42sharpen what you're doing for, patient care is
- 4:45critical. And now looking into 2026, what are
- 4:48some of the big priorities and headwinds you're
- 4:50focused on? Yeah. So looking ahead in 2026,
- 4:53you know, in leveraging the work we're doing
- 4:56with internal
- 4:57integrated assurance,
- 4:59we're we're really prioritizing
- 5:02data,
- 5:03agility, and resilience
- 5:05within internal audit. So for data, we're advancing
- 5:08our analytic capabilities
- 5:10for auditing so that we can provide leadership
- 5:13with real time insights
- 5:15into the financial, operational, and compliance risk,
- 5:18that come along with those headwinds for 2026
- 5:21and beyond.
- 5:22For agility, we're building flexible audit plans
- 5:25and integrated assurance processes that I highlighted earlier
- 5:28so that we can pivot quickly to anticipate
- 5:31and respond to evolving and emerging risk.
- 5:35And for resilience, you will really focus on,
- 5:38strengthening that cybersecurity
- 5:39as digital health expands, planning for those workforce
- 5:42shortages that that continue to challenge us,
- 5:46and embedding risk management into those strategic decisions.
- 5:50So whether it's, like, economic pressures,
- 5:53such as tighter reimbursement or rising costs, workforce
- 5:57burnout,
- 5:58and, of course, constant regulatory changes, you know,
- 6:02these headwinds
- 6:03are are real, and internal audit's role is
- 6:06to to turn that uncertainty into actionable insight
- 6:09so ParfView can stay resilient, compliant, and focused
- 6:13really on our mission of delivering exceptional care.
- 6:16That's helpful to understand. And, I I think
- 6:19it's really cool that you've got this view
- 6:22of having some of those audit plans and
- 6:24processes in place and and looking at the
- 6:26organization as a whole and how whether it's
- 6:28technology or or workforce or
- 6:31clinical care delivery, you're, seeing things from a
- 6:34a very,
- 6:36high level view in in helping each department
- 6:39improve and work better together to, deliver on
- 6:42the health system's overall mission.
- 6:44I think, you know, you've touched on a
- 6:46couple of these, challenges in the past
- 6:49in our discussion looking at, you know, whether
- 6:51it's workforce shortages or or other things that
- 6:54may be a challenge this next year. What
- 6:56do you think the hardest thing you'll have
- 6:57to do will be?
- 6:59Yeah. I think this is something that's probably
- 7:00shared,
- 7:02across
- 7:03health care as a whole.
- 7:04And for many of us, you know, the
- 7:06hardest challenge, I think, this year,
- 7:08will continue to be balancing growth and innovation
- 7:12with limited resources.
- 7:14So many of us across health care,
- 7:17you know, there's a constant real pressure to
- 7:20deliver
- 7:21more, you know, better access, better care, but
- 7:24also that pressure to do that while reducing
- 7:26costs. And that really means that we have
- 7:29to make some tough choices.
- 7:31We have to prioritize initiatives that truly move
- 7:34the needle on things like improving patient outcomes,
- 7:37strengthening our compliance,
- 7:39and managing risk, not just effectively, but also
- 7:42efficiently.
- 7:43And so our hope for internal audit play
- 7:45a critical role in enabling this, you know,
- 7:48responsibly,
- 7:49and we provide assurance that major projects
- 7:52such as, let's say,
- 7:54enterprise resource planning, you know, e ERP platform
- 7:57modernization
- 7:58or AI adoption initiatives.
- 8:01We work on those projects to provide assurance
- 8:04that they're governed well, they meet regulatory requirements,
- 8:06align with strategic priorities.
- 8:09And so our work helps leadership clearly see
- 8:11both risk and opportunities
- 8:14so decisions are informed and progress supports quality,
- 8:17compliance, and trust,
- 8:19you know, even in an environment where efficiency
- 8:21is essential.
- 8:22So, again, like, the challenge of balancing that
- 8:25growth to play those roles and to support
- 8:27leadership,
- 8:28and be innovative
- 8:31with the resources that we have,
- 8:33and facing these headwinds we discussed earlier, really
- 8:36will be, I think, the hardest thing that
- 8:38we'll have in front of us.
- 8:40That makes a lot of sense and certainly
- 8:42isn't, an easy task to try to, you
- 8:45know, push forward both the, challenges as well
- 8:48as the opportunities, the risks, and innovation at
- 8:50the same time.
- 8:52Do you ever find yourself pulled in multiple
- 8:54directions,
- 8:54or or do you feel pretty grounded in
- 8:57in, you know, the team as you're working
- 8:59with them?
- 9:01Yeah. It can be very challenging.
- 9:03I think that's why it's really important to,
- 9:06you know, have a structure in place that
- 9:10that guides your decisions and your priorities,
- 9:13such as, you know, starting with the the
- 9:15organization's strategic
- 9:17goals, initiatives, priorities, and aligning your work to
- 9:20that so that when you do get those
- 9:22competing priorities
- 9:23that you have that structure in place to
- 9:26to make the decisions on where you're gonna
- 9:28put your resources,
- 9:29you know, time, people, effort.
- 9:32So
- 9:33when when that those challenges come along, it's
- 9:35that that's what really keeps us grounded is
- 9:38making sure we're aligning back to those strategic
- 9:40priorities for the organization.
- 9:43I love that. Thank you for,
- 9:45digging a bit deeper there. Now before we
- 9:47wrap up, where do you see the best
- 9:48opportunities for organizational growth?
- 9:51So when I think about the best opportunities,
- 9:53I was talking about this with some of
- 9:55my colleagues, and and I found myself to
- 9:57be a little bit of an outlier. But
- 9:59when I think about this, you know, the
- 10:01best opportunities for growth in health care, I
- 10:03don't necessarily start with technology or or expansion.
- 10:06I really start with readiness.
- 10:09And I think that's because in internal audit,
- 10:10we see some really great ideas struggle, not
- 10:13because the strategy was wrong or the technology
- 10:16wasn't there, but because
- 10:17the foundation that is being built on this
- 10:20growth is being built on isn't strong enough.
- 10:23And so for the biggest growth opportunities that
- 10:26I would highlight,
- 10:27are investing in people,
- 10:30building a culture of accountability,
- 10:32and then turning data insights
- 10:34data into insights that actually drive decisions.
- 10:37So people, accountability,
- 10:39and actual insights.
- 10:41And when we invest in our people, we
- 10:43ultimately we build resilience and adaptability for those
- 10:46growth opportunities.
- 10:48When accountability is clear and supported, it can
- 10:51really become a driver for performance and innovation.
- 10:55And when data
- 10:57really moves beyond dashboards into actual insights,
- 11:01leaders can act faster and smarter. And those
- 11:04three things really, to me, create the organizational
- 11:07readiness
- 11:08that leads to strategic agility
- 11:10in in an environment like health care and
- 11:13in many others of constant change. You know,
- 11:16that agility really allows organizations to pursue
- 11:20growth confidently
- 11:22while staying true to their mission. And so
- 11:24for me, again, it's pretty simple.
- 11:26Growth isn't necessarily
- 11:29about just scaling up,
- 11:31but it's really strengthening the fundamentals. And to
- 11:34me, when you do that well, you're not
- 11:36just prepared for those growth opportunities, but you're
- 11:39you can really be positioned to lead those
- 11:41growth opportunities.
- 11:43I love that. Holly, thank you so much
- 11:45for joining us on the podcast today. This
- 11:46has been a really fun conversation.
- 11:49Learned a lot and truly, truly helpful to
- 11:52understand, you know, some of the things that
- 11:54you're thinking about in working towards at Parkview.
- 11:57And I look forward to seeing you as
- 11:59well at our sixteenth annual meeting coming up
- 12:01in April. I know you'll be speaking on
- 12:03a panel there, and and truly will be
- 12:05great to, dig deeper into some of these
- 12:07themes and and,
- 12:09continue to talk about the transformational times we
- 12:12are in health care. So thank you.
- 12:15Yeah. Thank you so much for letting me,
- 12:16you know, share a little bit about our
- 12:18journey, and and I look forward to the
- 12:21conference.
