- 0:00Chapter nineteen. The just. A man is not just if he carries a
- 0:08matter by violence. No, he who distinguishes both right and wrong, who
- 0:16is learned and leads others not by violence, but by law and equity,
- 0:23and who is guarded by the law and intelligent, he is called just.
- 0:30A man is not learned because he talks much. He who is patient,
- 0:36free from hatred and fear, he is called learned. A man is not
- 0:45a supporter of the law because he talks much. Even if a man has
- 0:50learnt little, but sees the law bodily, he is a supporter of the
- 0:55law. A man who never neglects the law. A man is not an
- 1:03elder because his head is gray. His age may be ripe, but he
- 1:07is called old in vain. He in whom there is truth, virtue,
- 1:17love, restraint, moderation, He who is free from impurity and is wise,
- 1:26he is called an elder. An envious, greedy, dishonest man does
- 1:34not become respectable by means of much talking only, or by the beauty of
- 1:38his complexion. He in whom all this is destroyed and taken out with a
- 1:48very root, He, when freed from hatred and wise, is called respectable.
- 1:57Not by tonsure does an undisciplined man who speaks falsehood become a samana.
- 2:05Can a man be a samana who is still held captive by desire and greediness?
- 2:14He who always quiets the evil, whether small or large, he is
- 2:20called a samana. A quiet man because he has quieted all evil. A
- 2:28man is not a mendicant bicshu simply because he asks others for alms. He
- 2:36who adopts the whole law is a bichu. Not he who only begs.
- 2:44He who is above good and evil, who is chaste, who with knowledge
- 2:50passes through the world. He indeed is called a bic shu. A man
- 2:59is not a moi because he observes silence mona, that is mauna if he
- 3:07is foolish and ignorant. But the wise, who taking the balance, chooses
- 3:15the good and avoids evil, he is a moony and is a mooney.
- 3:20Thereby, he who in this world weighs both sides is called a mooni.
- 3:30A man is not an elect riya because he injures living creatures, because he
- 3:37has pity on all living creatures. Therefore is a man called arriya. Not
- 3:45only by discipline and vows not only by much learning, not by entering into
- 3:53a trance, not by sleeping alone, do I, in the happiness of
- 4:00release, which no worldling can know? Pict be not confident as long as
- 4:10thou hast not attained the extinction of desires. End of chapter nineteen.
