Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Irene King: Aviation Expert on Boeing pleading guilty to defrauding regulators
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Boeing have have pleaded, I should say, guilty to criminal
- 0:03Speaker 1: fraud after the company violated a deal that was meant
- 0:06Speaker 1: to reform it following two fatal seven three seven Max
- 0:10Speaker 1: crashes that killed three hundred and forty six passengers in
- 0:14Speaker 1: twenty eighteen and twenty nineteen. You'll remember those. The company
- 0:18Speaker 1: will have to pay nearly four hundred million New Zealand dollars.
- 0:22Speaker 1: The families of the victims have criticized the decision, calling
- 0:25Speaker 1: it a sweetheart deal that would allow Boeing to avoid
- 0:29Speaker 1: responsibility for the deaths. Mark Lindquist is the lawyer for
- 0:33Speaker 1: some of those families. Fo one hundred and forty six
- 0:36Speaker 1: people died in those two crashes. Therefore, a pleader manslaughter
- 0:41Speaker 1: would be more fitted. Joining me this morning is the
- 0:45Speaker 1: aviation commentator Irene king Iron. Good morning. What is your
- 0:49Speaker 1: reaction to this?
- 0:52Speaker 2: Look, it's a very substantial Oh fine, I think it's
- 0:59Speaker 2: right the actual maximum. But really, you know, you can
- 1:04Speaker 2: find these companies. But at the end of the day,
- 1:07Speaker 2: what we're more interested in is does it promote or
- 1:12Speaker 2: does it improve the performance in aviation safety of the company,
- 1:17Speaker 2: And I don't think it goes anywhere near.
- 1:20Speaker 1: That Well, it clearly doesn't, does it, because this follows
- 1:23Speaker 1: the twenty twenty one judgment, which where they agreed to
- 1:26Speaker 1: again in lieu of going to court, pay a fine,
- 1:30Speaker 1: pay a penalty, and then they were supposed to have this,
- 1:34Speaker 1: you know, monitoring for three years. They've now breached that
- 1:38Speaker 1: monitoring and here we are with another fine. I mean,
- 1:40Speaker 1: why aren't they going after these guys in court?
- 1:43Speaker 2: Well, I think one of the problems is the monitoring
- 1:47Speaker 2: is the failure, and the monitoring is by the FAA
- 1:53Speaker 2: is not actually bowing Now. I'm not excusing Boeing because
- 1:57Speaker 2: I think, you know, there are some big performance issues
- 2:00Speaker 2: in Boweling, but you know, can the federal administration eshuygoers
- 2:07Speaker 2: for itself because the are the ones that failed with
- 2:10Speaker 2: the monitoring, And the answer very clearly is no. So
- 2:16Speaker 2: the fine process in the United States is very significantly
- 2:21Speaker 2: different from here. Now, if we put it into the
- 2:24Speaker 2: New Zealand context, the management of this company would be
- 2:30Speaker 2: in jail now, there's no question about that under our
- 2:33Speaker 2: health and safety legislation. But you know, the FAA and
- 2:39Speaker 2: the federal system is very different, and this is about
- 2:43Speaker 2: a failure of a federal system. And so you know,
- 2:49Speaker 2: it's a bit pointless, really.
- 2:50Speaker 1: I do we not inherit the safety features of aircraft
- 2:54Speaker 1: that are developed in the United States? You know, should
- 2:57Speaker 1: we be worried about right?
- 3:00Speaker 2: You know? Absolutely? And the question should we be worried
- 3:04Speaker 2: about the performance of Boeing? I think, Look, there's there's
- 3:08Speaker 2: some big question marks, but it comes back to the
- 3:12Speaker 2: leadership and who they put in there as the chief
- 3:15Speaker 2: executive and how they lead and how they think about safety. Now,
- 3:21Speaker 2: as I say in New Zealand, here, if this company
- 3:25Speaker 2: was located here, on the one hand, we have accs,
- 3:28Speaker 2: so you can't flee them. But on the other hand,
- 3:31Speaker 2: we have health and safety and these people would be
- 3:34Speaker 2: subject to an enormous fine and they would end up
- 3:37Speaker 2: in jail. There is no question about that.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Irene King, thank you very much every time this morning
- 3:42Speaker 1: aviation commentator Irene King's saying that Boeing were they to
- 3:45Speaker 1: be practicing here in the way that they were in
- 3:47Speaker 1: the United States. For more from News Talks' b listen
