Latest / DEEP INSIGHT / 'CORRUPTION' Joe SLAMS Trump's $1,000,000 meme coin contest
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Corruption. And it's all over the place. And we may
- 0:03Speaker 1: have once we win when a family's already raked up
- 0:08Speaker 1: two billion dollars, three billion dollars. It's hard to say
- 0:11Speaker 1: this is the worst example, a most flagrant example of corruption.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But it's certainly up there with the president announcing this
- 0:20Speaker 1: dinner for people that want to pay their way in.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Yeah, you said announcing, and that's important because they're not
- 0:27Speaker 2: hiding this stuff at all. I don't know that they
- 0:29Speaker 2: ever were, but especially in the second term, President Trump
- 0:32Speaker 2: is now offering investors what he's calling the most exclusive
- 0:35Speaker 2: dinner in the world. And all they have to do
- 0:37Speaker 2: is to buy at least a million dollars worth of
- 0:39Speaker 2: his cryptocurrency. It's part of a contest launched this week.
- 0:43Speaker 2: which says the top 185 investors in the Trump meme
- 0:47Speaker 2: coin will receive invitations to a dinner next month at
- 0:50Speaker 2: a Trump golf club where three mystery legends will be
- 0:54Speaker 2: in attendance. Meanwhile, the top 29 purchasers of that coin
- 0:58Speaker 2: get a VIP reception with the president and the four
- 1:01Speaker 2: largest holders will be gifted gifts. a Trump 18-karat gold watch,
- 1:06Speaker 2: which retails for around $ 899. The Trump meme coin currently
- 1:11Speaker 2: trades at $ 2, down from its high of $ 70 when
- 1:15Speaker 2: it was launched. Trump does not own the firm that
- 1:18Speaker 2: runs the meme coin, but he has made $ 635 million.
- 1:24Speaker 2: from the licensing of his name, Jonathan Lemire. First of all, John,
- 1:27Speaker 2: you know that watch is top of the line of
- 1:29Speaker 2: his stakes and everything else or any indication. But also
- 1:33Speaker 2: the fact that he is openly selling access to the
- 1:36Speaker 2: president of the United States to the highest bidder. This
- 1:38Speaker 2: is a worthless meme coin. So all you're doing is
- 1:41Speaker 2: buying access to the president of the United States and
- 1:44Speaker 2: doing it out in the open in a time, again,
- 1:47Speaker 2: where people can't afford to buy gas or groceries or
- 1:50Speaker 2: pay their rent or pay for their health care.
- 1:53Speaker 3: But Willie, there'll be three mystery guests, so it'll be
- 1:55Speaker 3: worth it. This is last week. President Trump had this
- 1:58Speaker 3: lavish state dinner at the White House for Xi Jinping
- 2:02Speaker 3: of China. And afterwards, there were members of his staff,
- 2:05Speaker 3: including Dan Scavino, his deputy chief of staff, who posted
- 2:07Speaker 3: these images, videos of Trump staff members and family members
- 2:11Speaker 3: like dousing each other in champagne, like these over the
- 2:15Speaker 3: top images of decadence and luxury. And there were even
- 2:18Speaker 3: some Republicans who came to me this week and I
- 2:20Speaker 3: included this in the story I wrote yesterday saying, what
- 2:22Speaker 3: are we doing?
- 2:23Speaker 4: Why would they do that?
- 2:25Speaker 1: And by the way, great. Tucker Carlson imitation of the
- 2:29Speaker 1: guy who does the imitation. What are we doing? What's
- 2:32Speaker 1: that about? What's that about? Is that the new rule now?
- 2:35Speaker 4: That's the goal.
- 2:36Speaker 1: That's the goal.
- 2:36Speaker 5: So what are we doing, though?
- 2:37Speaker 1: You're right. I mean, it's what Republicans should be asking,
- 2:40Speaker 1: because while people are struggling to pay rent, while an
- 2:44Speaker 1: increasing number of Americans are only able to buy their
- 2:48Speaker 1: groceries like on layaway. And there I saw a clip
- 2:56Speaker 1: and I didn't you know, I didn't believe that was
- 2:59Speaker 1: actually on the account that it said it was on
- 3:02Speaker 1: of champagne and women and all this other stuff like,
- 3:06Speaker 1: you know.
- 3:07Speaker 5: It's extraordinary.
- 3:08Speaker 3: The origin of this is so people were it was
- 3:10Speaker 3: made afterwards. Elon Musk put something out because he just
- 3:13Speaker 3: reactively retweets whatever he sees. But then members of the
- 3:17Speaker 3: White House like Jan Scavino is on the White House payroll.
- 3:19Speaker 3: This is his official account put out a different version.
- 3:22Speaker 4: He made his own.
- 3:23Speaker 3: And put it out because they were just so reveling
- 3:26Speaker 3: in this. And Richard, I mean, so that was last week.
- 3:30Speaker 3: And now next week or later this month, we have
- 3:32Speaker 3: this dinner, this exclusive dinner. Willie read through the prices there.
- 3:37Speaker 1: Here is this.
- 3:37Speaker 3: Here's the skivina dance. That's him in the middle. And
- 3:40Speaker 3: that's behind him. Eric Trump, the president's son and his wife.
- 3:45Speaker 1: They put this out.
- 3:46Speaker 3: They're reveling in this. They want us to see this.
- 3:49Speaker 3: And yet it comes at a time when Americans are
- 3:52Speaker 3: deeply concerned about affordability. And we keep coming back to
- 3:54Speaker 3: this theme. It's not just that the White House is
- 3:57Speaker 3: like trying to fight affordability and it's not working. They're
- 4:01Speaker 3: not even trying. And voters are just angrier and angrier.
- 4:06Speaker 4: This is Marie Antoinette. This is let me take more.
- 4:09Speaker 4: The 30 year mortgage is now at seven point two eight.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:13Speaker 4: Basically means housing is increasingly now priced out of the
- 4:16Speaker 4: reach of most Americans. This is like Kash Patel on stilts.
- 4:22Speaker 4: This is an out-of-control bunch. And that's what strikes me
- 4:25Speaker 4: about it. It's the brazenness of this. It's the nakedness
- 4:29Speaker 4: of this. So they're clearly living in a little bubble
- 4:32Speaker 4: of their fellow partygoers and rich people at Mar-a-Lago that
- 4:35Speaker 4: this is frat boy behavior. And these are people who
- 4:39Speaker 4: are entrusted. with the most powerful office in the world,
- 4:44Speaker 4: and we're getting frat boys. And you just wonder when
- 4:48Speaker 4: the country's gonna turn on them the way Hungary turned
- 4:51Speaker 4: on Orban. But my sense is it's a question of
- 4:53Speaker 4: when rather than if, and the sooner the better.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You know, Rev, it is, again, it's so striking. Donald
- 5:01Speaker 1: Trump has this Gilded Age meeting with the richest people
- 5:05Speaker 1: in the world. He, again, has this meme coin deal where,
- 5:13Speaker 1: you know, instead of going out and shaking hands with
- 5:15Speaker 1: Americans and listening to Americans and trying to relate to
- 5:18Speaker 1: what Americans are going through, he's letting people give him
- 5:23Speaker 1: millions of dollars to have dinner with him with a
- 5:27Speaker 1: meme coin. And here you have, as Richard said, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 1: Rent was already terrible. Gas prices high. You look at diesel.
- 5:36Speaker 1: It's just out of control. Republicans have slashed health care
- 5:41Speaker 1: so they can fund tax cuts for the very richest Americans.
- 5:47Speaker 1: And you see this Marie Antoinette stuff and there's just
- 5:51Speaker 1: a huge disconnect for a man who was supposed to
- 5:55Speaker 1: be a, quote, populist president. This is the least populist
- 5:58Speaker 1: president in our lifetime.
- 6:01Speaker 5: You hit the nail on the head in the sense that,
- 6:05Speaker 5: you know, I've been traveling a lot on this voter tour.
- 6:08Speaker 5: And one of the things that I'm getting from people
- 6:10Speaker 5: of all backgrounds, many of whom said I liked Trump,
- 6:15Speaker 5: It's not even that they're insensitive. It's almost like they're
- 6:19Speaker 5: holding people in contempt.
- 6:21Speaker 1: Well, they're rubbing their noses.
- 6:23Speaker 5: They're rubbing their nose.
- 6:24Speaker 1: That Scavino thing, that's an AI generated image that they
- 6:28Speaker 1: had to work to get. This is when this is
- 6:31Speaker 1: diesel is over six dollars. And you have farmers who
- 6:36Speaker 1: are struggling, people who are losing their farms. You've got
- 6:39Speaker 1: interest rates now, mortgages over 7%. So young people who
- 6:44Speaker 1: are already locked out of being able to buy houses
- 6:46Speaker 1: and pursuing the American dream like we were able to. 30,
- 6:50Speaker 1: 40 years ago. They can't do that. And look, look,
- 6:55Speaker 1: look at this.
- 6:55Speaker 2: Look at this.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Keep playing it. I want people to see this. And
- 6:59Speaker 1: so while they're struggling, while groceries more expensive than ever,
- 7:04Speaker 1: while Americans are selling their blood to be able.
- 7:07Speaker 2: To actually afford groceries.
- 7:09Speaker 1: I saw a stat on that this past week that
- 7:11Speaker 1: more Americans are selling blood, their blood for money than
- 7:14Speaker 1: ever before, are buying groceries on layaway. This is what
- 7:19Speaker 1: the White House is doing. And we, of course, we
- 7:21Speaker 1: just have this Dan Scavino clip. But this this comes
- 7:25Speaker 1: from the top down. Dan would be doing this if
- 7:27Speaker 1: he wasn't if he wasn't getting, you know, the read
- 7:30Speaker 1: from the president, the United States and everybody else. They
- 7:32Speaker 1: live in a gilded age. Everything's covered in gold. And
- 7:36Speaker 1: I mean, this is like the last days of Rome here.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I what what's the goal when working Americans are struggling
- 7:46Speaker 1: more today than they ever have?
- 7:47Speaker 5: And when people feel that you're not only being insensitive
- 7:52Speaker 5: to my plight, but that you're mocking me because those
- 7:56Speaker 5: kind of images make me feel like I'm being mocked,
- 8:00Speaker 5: like here, take this. And then you have the president
- 8:04Speaker 5: making all kind of, I mean, he did an interview
- 8:07Speaker 5: with Time Magazine where he was rambling like somebody that
- 8:10Speaker 5: wasn't still with us. And this is what you give
- 8:14Speaker 5: your party 32 days before the primaries. I think that
- 8:19Speaker 5: it is clear that this is something that is going
- 8:22Speaker 5: to the chickens will come home to roost on on
- 8:25Speaker 5: the midterm election day.
- 8:26Speaker 1: I've never seen anything like it, Willie.
- 8:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:29Speaker 2: And Claire, we don't have to wonder how the American
- 8:31Speaker 2: public feels watching all of this. We got that AP
- 8:33Speaker 2: poll that dropped yesterday during our show that shows 17 percent,
- 8:38Speaker 2: one seven of Americans support how the president is handling
- 8:42Speaker 2: the cost of living in this country. So when you
- 8:45Speaker 2: get to 17 percent, that's just not cracking Republicans. You've
- 8:48Speaker 2: cracked into the MAGA base at that point. His approval
- 8:52Speaker 2: on the economy overall is at 26 percent. Just deadly
- 8:55Speaker 2: numbers politically.
- 8:58Speaker 6: Yeah, as somebody who spent most of my adult life
- 9:01Speaker 6: trying to figure out how I can tap into how
- 9:05Speaker 6: people feel about their lives in order to be a
- 9:08Speaker 6: more effective political candidate, it is really interesting to me
- 9:13Speaker 6: how bad they are at this in the White House
- 9:16Speaker 6: right now. It almost makes you think. That he kind
- 9:21Speaker 6: of said to the inner circle, you know, it's OK
- 9:24Speaker 6: if we lose because then I've got somebody to blame
- 9:27Speaker 6: for the next two years. Because, you know, he loves
- 9:29Speaker 6: to blame other people for everything that's messed up under
- 9:33Speaker 6: his watch. It almost makes me think that that he said,
- 9:37Speaker 6: you know, go ahead. Don't worry about offending everyone. Don't
- 9:40Speaker 6: worry about being so totally off key. That is jarring
- 9:44Speaker 6: because I like the idea that I'll be blaming them
- 9:48Speaker 6: and I'll be the persecuted one again.
- 9:51Speaker 1: And I'll be the one that's a victim. That's brilliant, Claire.
- 9:54Speaker 1: You know, he is so much better playing victim than
- 9:57Speaker 1: he is playing leader. He went when when he's having
- 10:02Speaker 1: to defend himself. When when he's being impeached, when people
- 10:08Speaker 1: are calling him out for all the serial abuses that
- 10:11Speaker 1: he's done, when he's the victim, when he gets to
- 10:15Speaker 1: play the victim, that's Donald Trump at his political best.
- 10:19Speaker 1: So I you that's a brilliant point. Maybe he's thinking
- 10:25Speaker 1: if we lose, I win because I get to be
- 10:28Speaker 1: the victim again and I get to be the one
- 10:30Speaker 1: that's under siege. Yeah.
- 10:33Speaker 6: And I think the Democrats are going to have to
- 10:35Speaker 6: be careful. Assuming we do win, I think they're going
- 10:37Speaker 6: to be very careful because if they there is accountability
- 10:41Speaker 6: that everyone is going to clamor for. And of course,
- 10:44Speaker 6: nobody wants accountability more than I do, for sure. But
- 10:48Speaker 6: we've got to be really careful. The Democrats need to
- 10:51Speaker 6: stay on message and make sure they're addressing people's economic
- 10:54Speaker 6: needs and tend to their knitting and not get so
- 10:57Speaker 6: carried away with vengeance about Donald Trump that you play
- 10:59Speaker 6: right into his hand.
- 11:01Speaker 2: And by the way, yesterday in Oklahoma, the president said
- 11:04Speaker 2: all of this, his poll numbers, the way the country's
- 11:06Speaker 2: feeling about him is a PR problem. He said we're
- 11:09Speaker 2: not good at public relations because the fake news won't
- 11:12Speaker 2: tell the real story of what's going on in America.
- 11:15Speaker 2: The problem is people feel what's going on in America
- 11:17Speaker 2: every time they go to the gas station. or to
- 11:19Speaker 2: the grocery store.
