- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 15th of
- 0:16April, and it's so good to have your company.
- 0:18And we are continuing along this rampage of the Israelite nation,
- 0:24moving through these lands and taking up possession of what God
- 0:28had promised them. And it might sound a little
- 0:30brutal that the poor old inhabitants get booted out.
- 0:34And how is that fair? But they were on their own
- 0:37trajectory and their trajectory had not been good.
- 0:40And part of Israel taking these lands was part of God's
- 0:44judgement of them all at the same time.
- 0:46Killing two birds with one stone, if you like.
- 0:48And if you have been wondering, Lord, how are you going to help
- 0:51me overcome this challenge? Well, today's reading is an
- 0:55absolute crackerjack to say God does not do things in the
- 0:59typical way that we would anticipate.
- 1:00He just comes out of left field with some crazy creativity, as
- 1:05is evidenced in the story about the fall of Jericho.
- 1:09So without further ado, let us dive in and read together Joshua
- 1:13chapter 6. Now the gates of Jericho were
- 1:26tightly shut because the people were afraid of the Israelites.
- 1:30No one was allowed to go out or in, but the Lord said to Joshua,
- 1:35I have given you Jericho, its king, and all its strong
- 1:39warriors. You and your fighting men should
- 1:42March around the town once a day for six days. 7 priests will
- 1:47walk ahead of the ark, each carrying a ram's horn.
- 1:51On the 7th day you are to March around the town 7 times with the
- 1:56priests blowing the horns. When you hear the priests give
- 1:59one long blast on the ram's horns, have all the people shout
- 2:04as loud as they can. Then the walls of the town will
- 2:08collapse and the people can charge straight into the town.
- 2:14So Joshua called together the priests and said take up the ark
- 2:17of the Lord's covenant and assign 7 priests to walk in
- 2:21front of it, each carrying a ram's horn.
- 2:24Then he gave orders to the people.
- 2:26March around the town, and the armed men will lead the way in
- 2:30front of the ark of the Lord. After Joshua spoke to the
- 2:34people, the seven priests with the ram's horns started marching
- 2:38in the presence of the Lord, blowing the horns as they
- 2:41marched, and the Ark of the Lord's Covenant followed behind
- 2:45them. Some of the armed men marched in
- 2:48front of the priests with the horns and some behind the ark
- 2:51with the priests continually blowing the horns.
- 2:55Do not shout, do not even talk. Joshua commanded.
- 2:59Not a single word from any of you until I tell you to shout,
- 3:03then shout. So the ark of the Lord was
- 3:06carried around the town once that day, and then everyone
- 3:10returned to spend the night in the camp.
- 3:13Joshua got up early the next day, and the priests again
- 3:16carried the Ark of the Lord. The seven priests with the ram's
- 3:20horns marched in front of the Ark of the Lord, blowing their
- 3:23horns. Again the armed men marched both
- 3:27in front of the priests with the horns and behind the arc of the
- 3:30Lord. All this time the priests were
- 3:33blowing their horns. On the second day they again
- 3:37marched around the town once and returned to the camp.
- 3:40They followed this pattern for six days.
- 3:43On the 7th day the Israelites got up at dawn and marched
- 3:47around the town as they had done before, but this time they went
- 3:51around the town 7 times. The seventh time around, as the
- 3:55priest sounded the long blast on their horns, Joshua commanded
- 3:59the people shout, for the Lord has given you the town Jericho,
- 4:04and everything in it must be completely destroyed as an
- 4:08offering to the Lord. Only Rahab the prostitute and
- 4:11the others in her house will be spared, for she protected our
- 4:15spies. Do not take any of the things
- 4:18set apart for destruction, or you yourselves will be
- 4:21completely destroyed and you will bring trouble on the camp
- 4:24of Israel. Everything made from silver,
- 4:27gold, bronze or iron is sacred to the Lord and must be brought
- 4:32into His treasury. When the people heard the sound
- 4:35of the ram's horns, they shouted as loud as they could.
- 4:40Suddenly the walls of Jericho collapsed and the Israelites
- 4:45charged straight into the town and captured it.
- 4:48They completely destroyed everything in it with their
- 4:51swords, men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep, goats and
- 4:56donkeys. Meanwhile, Joshua said to the
- 4:59two spies, Keep your promise. Go to the prostitute's house and
- 5:04bring her out along with all her family.
- 5:07The men who had been spies went in and brought out Rahab, her
- 5:11father, mother, brothers, and all the other relatives who were
- 5:15with her. They moved a whole family to a
- 5:18safe place near the camp of Israel.
- 5:21Then the Israelites burned the town and everything in it.
- 5:25Only the things made from silver, gold, bronze, or iron
- 5:28were kept for the treasury of the Lord's house.
- 5:31So Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute and her relatives who
- 5:36were with her in the house because she had hidden the spies
- 5:39Joshua sent to Jericho and she lives among the Israelites to
- 5:44this day. At that time Joshua invoked this
- 5:48curse. May the curse of the Lord fall
- 5:51on anyone who tries to rebuild the town of Jericho.
- 5:55At the cost of his first born son, he will lay its foundation.
- 5:59At the cost of his youngest son, he will set up his gates.
- 6:03So the Lord was with Joshua and his reputation spread throughout
- 6:08the land. You are a faithful God.
- 6:22You are a God who walks with us. You are a God who keeps your
- 6:26word, and you are a God who blesses us.
- 6:31And Lord, as we hear this wild and unexpected story of how the
- 6:36people of Israel conquered this fortified town, our Lord, you
- 6:41are the same God today as you were on that day.
- 6:45And Lord, I wonder how you have got plans to overcome some of
- 6:51the seemingly impossible hurdles that seem to lie before us.
- 6:56Lord, you do not need to do things in conventional ways.
- 6:59You do not need to take on the powers that we face head on.
- 7:06Know your creativity and power works in its own glorious way.
- 7:12And Lord, I pray that we can be open to your creativity and your
- 7:17ways of bringing about your Kingdom.
- 7:20Our Lord, we stand in awe at your absolute sovereignty over
- 7:24everything, and we're so grateful that you love us like
- 7:28you do. And so we come before you with
- 7:32praise in our hearts and pray all of this in that saving name
- 7:35of Jesus, Amen.
