- 0:00Speaker 1: Let us pray. Behold, I will put a fleece of
- 0:04Speaker 1: wool in the floor, and if the dew be on
- 0:07Speaker 1: the fleece only, and it be dry upon all the
- 0:10Speaker 1: earth beside, then I shall know that thou wilt save
- 0:13Speaker 1: Israel by mine hand, as thou hast said. Judges 6.37 Lord,
- 0:21Speaker 1: today I will be aware of the subtle signs of
- 0:24Speaker 1: disobedience that rob me of my peace and safety. No
- 0:29Speaker 1: matter how small the sin seems, I will remove it
- 0:32Speaker 1: from my life. Like Gideon, I will work as the
- 0:36Speaker 1: Lord's servant and remove the idols from around me. I
- 0:41Speaker 1: declare that the Spirit of God will rise up within
- 0:44Speaker 1: me as I stand for what is right. I will
- 0:48Speaker 1: not be intimidated by those who move in deceit, for
- 0:51Speaker 1: I know that the commander of the Lord's army is
- 0:54Speaker 1: with me. Rise up, Lord. and surround me with men
- 1:00Speaker 1: and women who have the same drive and passion to
- 1:03Speaker 1: win and to take victory for your namesake. I choose
- 1:08Speaker 1: to thank you in advance that you have already prepared
- 1:11Speaker 1: your army of kingdom-minded influencers to move forward with boldness
- 1:17Speaker 1: and take back what is rightfully ours. I am a
- 1:21Speaker 1: person of valor. I am a warrior, and your hand
- 1:25Speaker 1: of protection will see me through to complete victory. In Jesus' name.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Amen.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Thank you for praying with us today. Continue your time
- 1:39Speaker 1: with God by listening to today's Bible story. Brought to

- 1:53Speaker 3: Gideon, the trivial judge. In our last story, we learned
- 1:59Speaker 3: how Jabin and his general, Sisera, oppressed Israel for over
- 2:03Speaker 3: 20 years. The Lord sent Deborah, a mighty and wise woman.
- 2:09Speaker 3: He also sent Barak, the commander of Israel's armies. They
- 2:13Speaker 3: fought valiantly against Sisera and his 900 chariots. Sisera fled
- 2:19Speaker 3: and was in the tent of a woman named Jael
- 2:21Speaker 3: and killed in his sleep with a tent peg through
- 2:24Speaker 3: his skull. In this story, We learn about the oppression
- 2:28Speaker 3: of Midian against Israel. God calls an unlikely judge, Gideon,
- 2:33Speaker 3: to gather an army, as inspired by the book of Judges.
- 2:41Speaker 4: Hello, I'm Pastor Jack Graham with today's episode of the
- 2:44Speaker 4: Bible in a Year podcast. In our last episode, we
- 2:48Speaker 4: heard how God worked through the faith and wisdom of Deborah,
- 2:51Speaker 4: the deliverer. and the courage of Barak to free the
- 2:55Speaker 4: Israelites from Canaanite oppression. We also saw how God used
- 2:59Speaker 4: a foreign woman by the name of Jael to defeat
- 3:02Speaker 4: the Canaanite general, Caesarea. It's a story of how God
- 3:06Speaker 4: can work and does work through unlikely unknown people to
- 3:09Speaker 4: bring about His will and how even the most insurmountable
- 3:13Speaker 4: obstacles can be overcome when we trust in God for
- 3:16Speaker 4: the result. Today, We're going to hear about another judge
- 3:20Speaker 4: or deliverer that God raises up to free his people,
- 3:24Speaker 4: a man who wouldn't have made anyone's list of who's who.
- 3:27Speaker 4: He was not a great candidate to lead Israel into battle.
- 3:31Speaker 4: His name is Gideon, and through the story of Gideon,
- 3:35Speaker 4: we'll once again see how God can use even the small,
- 3:38Speaker 4: the weak, and insignificant to accomplish great and mighty things.
- 3:43Speaker 4: So let's listen now to today's reading.
- 3:47Speaker 3: Israel lived in peace. They worked the fertile land, built
- 3:51Speaker 3: new homes for their children, and worshipped God. However, compromise
- 3:57Speaker 3: began to creep into the house of Israel. A few
- 4:00Speaker 3: idols were brought into the temple, and slowly the people
- 4:03Speaker 3: began to stray away from God. It was not deliberate,
- 4:07Speaker 3: but gradual and unassuming. Soon Israel found themselves caught in
- 4:12Speaker 3: another cycle of total depravity. They did only what they
- 4:17Speaker 3: thought good for themselves, not for one another. They became
- 4:21Speaker 3: selfish and self-pleasing, and turned from God and His law.
- 4:27Speaker 3: If history has informed anything, it is that turning away
- 4:30Speaker 3: from God is the first step towards destruction. An evil
- 4:35Speaker 3: was lurking in the caves above Israel, like a dragon
- 4:39Speaker 3: hidden in darkness. The Midianites were dwelling secretly in dens
- 4:44Speaker 3: carved in the mountains, and they were evil laughs and
- 4:47Speaker 3: battle cries echoed through the canyons, and campfires lit up
- 4:51Speaker 3: the mountain range. The evil horde descended upon Israel like
- 4:55Speaker 3: a swarm. Whenever Israel planted crops, the Midianites and the
- 5:00Speaker 3: people of the east would rise against them to devour
- 5:03Speaker 3: everything in sight. Like pirates, they would pillage, rape, and
- 5:08Speaker 3: burn Israel into dust. For seven years, Israel desperately worked
- 5:13Speaker 3: to provide their families with safety and food, only to
- 5:17Speaker 3: have them stripped away in a storm of Midianite evil.
- 5:21Speaker 3: They would hide their livestock and food in their tents,
- 5:24Speaker 3: but the Midianites were like locusts, eating up all of it.
- 5:30Speaker 3: The people of Israel cried out to the God they
- 5:33Speaker 3: had abandoned. Once again, out of desperation, not love. They
- 5:38Speaker 3: called upon the God that parted seas to save them.
- 5:41Speaker 3: One morning, an angel of the Lord sat under the
- 5:44Speaker 3: shade of a terebinth tree. A few yards away, Gideon
- 5:49Speaker 3: was beating out wheat and storing it in a winepress
- 5:52Speaker 3: to hide from the Midianites. Gideon was smaller in frame, paranoid,
- 5:57Speaker 3: and constantly looking over his shoulder. He belonged to the
- 6:01Speaker 3: weakest tribe in Israel, and he was the weakest brother
- 6:04Speaker 3: of his family. The Lord watched Gideon work frantically, shaking
- 6:09Speaker 3: in fear and fumbling about his work. The angel of
- 6:13Speaker 3: the Lord spoke to him from under the tree, saying,
- 6:16Speaker 3: God is with you, mighty man of valor. Gideon leapt
- 6:20Speaker 3: in the air out of fear, then saw it was
- 6:23Speaker 3: not an enemy. Gideon walked closer and said, If the
- 6:27Speaker 3: Lord is with us, then why are we living like this?
- 6:31Speaker 3: God has forsaken us and given us to Midian like
- 6:34Speaker 3: a treat to a dog. Gideon spoke boldly, for he
- 6:38Speaker 3: was skilled in the art of whining and complaining. The
- 6:41Speaker 3: Lord smiled and said to him, There is might in you.
- 6:46Speaker 3: Take it and save Israel from Midian. I am sending you.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Gideon laughed. How could I save Israel?
- 6:55Speaker 1: He asked.
- 6:56Speaker 3: My clan is the weakest in this region, and I
- 6:59Speaker 3: am the runt of my father's house. No, you have
- 7:03Speaker 3: the wrong guy. Gideon continued to laugh and began walking away.
- 7:09Speaker 3: God said, I shall be with you, Gideon, and you
- 7:13Speaker 3: shall strike Midian down as a single man. Gideon turned
- 7:19Speaker 3: back to him and said, If you truly are the Lord,
- 7:23Speaker 3: and I am truly called to be this hero of yours,
- 7:28Speaker 3: then show me a sign. Gideon asked the Lord to
- 7:34Speaker 3: stay while he went back into his house to prepare
- 7:37Speaker 3: an offering. He prepared meat and cakes. He put the
- 7:41Speaker 3: meat in baskets and its broth in a pot and
- 7:44Speaker 3: rushed it back to the Lord. Gideon placed the offering
- 7:47Speaker 3: on a rock next to him. Pour the broth over
- 7:51Speaker 3: the offering, God said. So Gideon made all of the
- 7:55Speaker 3: meat and cakes sopping wet, dripping completely with broth. Then
- 8:00Speaker 3: the angel of the Lord reached out the tip of
- 8:02Speaker 3: his staff and lightly touched the offering. Immediately, like a
- 8:07Speaker 3: match to oil, the offering was consumed by flames. Gideon
- 8:11Speaker 3: started at the fire in amazement, then turned back to
- 8:14Speaker 3: the Lord, but he had vanished in an instant. At
- 8:18Speaker 3: that moment, Gideon had perceived that it really was an
- 8:22Speaker 3: angel of the Lord he was speaking to, and fear
- 8:25Speaker 3: came over him. That night the Lord spoke to Gideon
- 8:29Speaker 3: in the quiet. In your town there are many idols.
- 8:33Speaker 3: You must remove them immediately, God whispered. Gideon, too frightened
- 8:39Speaker 3: of his father and older brothers to do it in
- 8:41Speaker 3: the daytime, snuck into the temple at night. Gideon was
- 8:46Speaker 3: beating with sweat and constantly looking over his shoulder. He
- 8:49Speaker 3: tied a rope around the altar of Baal. It was
- 8:52Speaker 3: a massive statue looming over Gideon in the darkness. His
- 8:57Speaker 3: torch illuminated the face of Baal staring down at him.
- 9:01Speaker 3: Gideon cringed and tied the other end of the rope
- 9:04Speaker 3: to his father's bull and slapped it. It ripped the
- 9:07Speaker 3: altar of Baal from its foundation and came crashing down,
- 9:10Speaker 3: shattering into a thousand pieces. Gideon also cut down other
- 9:15Speaker 3: idols that dwelled in the house. Then Gideon took another
- 9:19Speaker 3: one of his father's bulls and offered it to the lords.
- 9:23Speaker 3: The men in town rose early in the morning and
- 9:26Speaker 3: saw that the altar was shattered. Who has done this?
- 9:30Speaker 3: they shouted. The men teemed with anger. Who did this?
- 9:34Speaker 3: they shouted again. The people began to gather around the
- 9:38Speaker 3: site of the broken idol. They searched around and spoke
- 9:41Speaker 3: to every person except one, Gideon. He has done this,
- 9:46Speaker 3: they said with their jaws clenched. The men knocked on
- 9:49Speaker 3: the door of Gideon's father, Joash. They burst through the
- 9:53Speaker 3: door and said, Where is your son? He shall die
- 9:56Speaker 3: for what he has done. Joash panicked. He wanted to
- 10:00Speaker 3: protect his son, but did not want to invoke the
- 10:03Speaker 3: wrath of the city on himself. So do you fight
- 10:06Speaker 3: all of Baal's battles? Joash said, fumbling around his words.
- 10:10Speaker 3: If he is a god, wouldn't he want to deal
- 10:13Speaker 3: with Gideon himself? The men listened and stormed off. Meanwhile,
- 10:18Speaker 3: the Midianite horde crossed the Jordan River and camped in
- 10:22Speaker 3: a valley nearby. The Amalekites, along with some mysterious people
- 10:26Speaker 3: from the east, joined forces with them and camped there.
- 10:30Speaker 3: Their presence was felt by the people of Israel. Fear
- 10:34Speaker 3: and hysteria ensued, yet something happened to Gideon. A small
- 10:39Speaker 3: spark lit up within him. Something he had never felt
- 10:43Speaker 3: before flickered inside him. The Spirit of God clothed Gideon
- 10:47Speaker 3: like a suit of armor. Gideon's once cowardly demeanor shifted slightly.
- 10:52Speaker 3: In a moment of bravery, Gideon called for the armies
- 10:55Speaker 3: of Israel with the authority of a true judge called
- 10:58Speaker 3: by God. He sounded the trumpet of war, and it
- 11:02Speaker 3: echoed across the cities of Israel. Gideon sent messengers throughout
- 11:06Speaker 3: the land to gather an army. The Spirit of God
- 11:10Speaker 3: flew like an eagle across the country, igniting a fire
- 11:14Speaker 3: of hope. in the hearts of Israel. Men of war
- 11:18Speaker 3: gathered to Gideon. The tribes of Manasseh, Asher, Zebulun, and
- 11:22Speaker 3: Naphtali picked up their swords and marched. Soon a vast
- 11:27Speaker 3: army of 32,000 men stood at attention before Gideon, and
- 11:32Speaker 3: he stood amazed by God. The battle was near, and
- 11:36Speaker 3: the men were ready to follow Gideon to death and glory.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Gideon retreated to a secret place to speak with God alone.
- 11:43Speaker 3: The same self-doubt that Moses once had crippled the heart
- 11:47Speaker 3: of Gideon. How can it be me? he whispered in prayer. Lord,
- 11:52Speaker 3: if you will truly save Israel by my hand, show
- 11:55Speaker 3: me a sign. So Gideon brought out a fleece of
- 11:58Speaker 3: wool and set it on the floor. Gideon said, If
- 12:02Speaker 3: you make this fleece wet on the dry ground, I
- 12:04Speaker 3: will know it is you, and you have sent me.
- 12:07Speaker 3: God did not enjoy being tested, but he wanted Gideon's
- 12:11Speaker 3: heart to be comforted. So he made the fleece wet
- 12:14Speaker 3: and kept the ground dry. Gideon spoke again, saying, Do
- 12:19Speaker 3: not be angry with me, but could you now make
- 12:22Speaker 3: the fleece dry and the ground wet? So God did
- 12:26Speaker 3: as Gideon asked. This was a small reassurance that Gideon
- 12:30Speaker 3: was supported by the God of all creation. Gideon rose
- 12:34Speaker 3: to his feet, pulled his shoulders back, and marched towards
- 12:38Speaker 3: his army.
- 12:41Speaker 4: Forty years had passed since God delivered his people from
- 12:44Speaker 4: the Canaanites under the leadership of Deborah and Barak. Life
- 12:49Speaker 4: was good. There was peace and prosperity. But eventually, the
- 12:53Speaker 4: people once again turned to other gods and brought God's
- 12:57Speaker 4: judgment upon themselves. The peace that they had enjoyed for
- 13:00Speaker 4: so long crumbled. Midianites, Amalekites, and people from the east
- 13:05Speaker 4: began to loot their crops and livestock, leaving Israel in
- 13:09Speaker 4: a desperate situation. These foreign enemies had placed their own
- 13:12Speaker 4: gods in the temple. They had replaced Yahweh with idols. These,
- 13:17Speaker 4: of course, were just man-made sculptures whose only power was
- 13:20Speaker 4: to destroy the people's relationship with the only true God.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Israel worshipped false deities, and these deities failed them. For
- 13:29Speaker 4: seven years, the Midianites pillaged and plundered until God's children
- 13:34Speaker 4: cried out to the God that they had forgotten. God
- 13:37Speaker 4: heard their cries and sent a prophet to remind them
- 13:39Speaker 4: of who he was, what he had done, and how
- 13:42Speaker 4: they had disobeyed him. God could have stopped right there
- 13:46Speaker 4: and just sent judgment as the price of their disobedience.
- 13:49Speaker 4: But God in his grace, God in his great mercy,
- 13:53Speaker 4: came once again to rescue his children and he sent
- 13:56Speaker 4: an angel to a man by the name of Gideon.
- 13:59Speaker 4: Gideon's first response was to question the angel and to
- 14:02Speaker 4: ask why God had abandoned his people. His words are
- 14:06Speaker 4: reminiscent of Moses' words to God in the desert. Why
- 14:09Speaker 4: did you bring us all this way and leave us
- 14:11Speaker 4: here to die? But God pressed the issue. He tells
- 14:15Speaker 4: Gideon that there is greatness in him. Even though Gideon
- 14:18Speaker 4: was the least of the least of his own tribe,
- 14:20Speaker 4: God said that he had chosen him to save Israel.
- 14:24Speaker 4: Gideon knew that he was not a man of physical
- 14:27Speaker 4: significance or strength. And at first he refuses to do
- 14:31Speaker 4: the job. But God tells Gideon he is his man.
- 14:35Speaker 4: and that God will deliver Israel through him. Gideon is
- 14:40Speaker 4: not convinced, and so he asks for a sign. He
- 14:43Speaker 4: prepared an offering for God, placing meat and bread in
- 14:45Speaker 4: a basket and drenching it in broth. When the angel
- 14:49Speaker 4: touched the offering with his staff, flames erupted and consumed
- 14:52Speaker 4: the offering. So Gideon's doubt is now burned away with
- 14:56Speaker 4: the flames, and now he has a genuine fear. The
- 15:01Speaker 4: fear of God is now burning in his heart. He
- 15:04Speaker 4: realizes that God is speaking to him, and he's terrified.
- 15:08Speaker 4: But God reassures him, tells him not to fear, and
- 15:11Speaker 4: then he commands him to tear down his father's idols.
- 15:15Speaker 4: God knew that if he was going to give Israel
- 15:17Speaker 4: victory and deliver them from their enemies, that he must
- 15:21Speaker 4: clean house. These false gods could no longer stand. Israel
- 15:25Speaker 4: could no longer be tempted to trust in idols. In
- 15:29Speaker 4: the same way, God wants to tear down the idols
- 15:32Speaker 4: of our own heart. the strongholds in our lives that
- 15:34Speaker 4: keep us from living in obedience to him. Our own
- 15:38Speaker 4: disobedience become idols of the heart. There can be no
- 15:42Speaker 4: half measures or half-hearted devotions. God wants all of you.
- 15:47Speaker 4: He wants you to be all in. Let there be
- 15:51Speaker 4: no other gods before our God. Gideon obeys and tears
- 15:56Speaker 4: the idols down. The people become angry with him when
- 15:59Speaker 4: they discover what he's done and want to kill him.
- 16:02Speaker 4: But Gideon's father challenges the people to let their gods
- 16:06Speaker 4: take care of Gideon if they were real. Now Gideon,
- 16:11Speaker 4: who's full of courage, sounds the call to war. And
- 16:14Speaker 4: when he sees that God has indeed called him and
- 16:17Speaker 4: prepared him, he is now surrounded by an army of 32,000.
- 16:22Speaker 4: But doubt creeps in once more and Gideon tests God
- 16:25Speaker 4: with a fleece. God patiently answers Gideon's call for reassurance
- 16:30Speaker 4: and twice proves himself to Gideon. The time for testing
- 16:35Speaker 4: is over. Now is the time for battle. And that's
- 16:39Speaker 4: what we're going to hear about the next time. It's
- 16:42Speaker 4: one of the greatest stories in the Bible. Dear Lord,
- 16:45Speaker 4: thank you for today's word and how it shows us
- 16:49Speaker 4: that you can use us even when we are small
- 16:51Speaker 4: and weak. that you do great things when we surrender
- 16:55Speaker 4: our lives to you. Thank you for this reminder that
- 16:57Speaker 4: you want nothing less than our full devotion to you.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Help us to tear down the other things, the idols
- 17:04Speaker 4: that keep our eyes off you, the gods of this
- 17:07Speaker 4: world that cannot help us at all. We pray in
- 17:10Speaker 4: the powerful and mighty name of Jesus, the God who
- 17:13Speaker 4: can do the impossible, in Jesus' name, amen. Thank you
