- 0:00[SPEAKER_04]: And I am so happy to bring the very, you know, first guest, bro.
- 0:05[SPEAKER_04]: You know, first guest, bro.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, thank you, man.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_04]: My voice is on too.
- 0:11[SPEAKER_04]: Come on, man.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_04]: I see.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_04]: They don't, don't think I'll listen to you, bro.
- 0:15[SPEAKER_04]: They've got a really cute Parker in the building.
- 0:17[SPEAKER_04]: It's my show's long.
- 0:18[SPEAKER_04]: You brought it in the building.
- 0:21[SPEAKER_04]: Let's go.
- 0:22[SPEAKER_04]: Cute.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_04]: What's up, man?
- 0:23[SPEAKER_04]: How you feeling, bro?
- 0:25[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, man.
- 0:26[SPEAKER_04]: I'm, I'm, I'm out of the Jewish show up, bro.
- 0:29[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, man.
- 0:30[SPEAKER_00]: Listen, you was talking about relationships, and I'm really big on relationships.
- 0:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like, I feel like it's mandatory, man, when your friends call you, like it's not an option.
- 0:40[SPEAKER_00]: They have to find a way to show up.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_00]: So it's nothing was going to stop me from not only showing up, but also donating.
- 0:45[SPEAKER_00]: Man, yeah, it's cute saying.
- 0:47[SPEAKER_04]: He gave away some money to death.
- 0:48[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, he's going to be giving away $350 today.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_04]: Man, can you wrap up?
- 0:54[SPEAKER_04]: What?
- 0:55[SPEAKER_04]: What?
- 0:56[SPEAKER_04]: 500, and so two partners gonna give way 500.
- 1:00[SPEAKER_04]: Now I need to figure out how we're giving away that 500 within this next 30, 45 minutes, okay?
- 1:05[SPEAKER_04]: Give cards something, we gonna make this a day.
- 1:08[SPEAKER_04]: I, two men, one, thank you so much for coming, bro.
- 1:12[SPEAKER_04]: And I think this conversation is long overdue.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, because you are a founding member of the legendary one, 12, which is my favorite group, bro.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_04]: I'm telling you, you really could take me on the road.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_04]: I know the words, every song.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_04]: Let's do the first two, three albums.
- 1:32[SPEAKER_04]: Oh my gosh.
- 1:34[SPEAKER_04]: So my first question to you is,
- 1:39[SPEAKER_04]: What did it feel like as, I don't know how old you were at that time, to be an international superstar?
- 1:47[SPEAKER_00]: It was, so I was 19 years old and it was kind of like, it was surreal because we had only watched what we
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: strive to be from television.
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: So we saw boys to men.
- 2:04[SPEAKER_00]: We saw Joe to see we saw Joe and guy and all those.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I mean literally hovering around the television watching video music soul and MTV and all those.
- 2:14[SPEAKER_00]: And so we aspire to like that's going to be us one day.
- 2:18[SPEAKER_00]: And when it actually happened.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: It probably took me personally, maybe second album to really, really encompass like, okay, this is a real thing.
- 2:28[SPEAKER_00]: Because that first cycle, the first album, it was just the excitement, it was with young, which is with traveling, with meeting new people, but we're getting to do what we love to do, which is just saying.
- 2:39[SPEAKER_00]: And so it wasn't really viewed as a job then, it was just, we get to go on airplanes, they feed us,
- 2:46[SPEAKER_00]: in all these nice hotels and we get the same and we do it without without brothers like it was just fun.
- 2:53[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so we see a lot of the story.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_04]: There's a bunch of movies where we see, we have a group that's doing some amazing things, but they're not realizing the money at the time, right?
- 3:09[SPEAKER_04]: So I think you were explaining to me the music business and how it works.
- 3:14[SPEAKER_04]: But I'm trying to understand how a group were selling all of these records, money's being made,
- 3:22[SPEAKER_04]: Are we making money?
- 3:23[SPEAKER_04]: Did you ever, did you experience that one?
- 3:26[SPEAKER_04]: And two, didn't even matter at that time.
- 3:28[SPEAKER_00]: So because we're so young, uh, it was an priority then, uh, but as years go by and you kind of reflect on all of the hours, all of the, the commitment and the drive and the rehearsals and all of that.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: uh it you kind of start to look at the numbers and in a perfect world you'd love to sign an initial record deal that allows you to be able to you know make the lion share of your money.
- 3:59[SPEAKER_00]: But during that time during the 90s that was a standard contract that was given out to pretty much all the artists.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_00]: So a lot of the artists from the 90s are going to have a similar story because the the prototype of and of a record deal was just very similar.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: You was going to sign maybe through a production deal that you didn't go directly to a label there's going to take a percentage and then 9 out of 10 times your publishing was going to run kind of.
- 4:25[SPEAKER_00]: uh, concurrently with the record deal.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_00]: So the record deal was for this amount of time the publishing was going to kind of tag along with it.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_00]: Um, and the beauty for me and in one 12 is we were writers from the beginning.
- 4:39[SPEAKER_00]: and a lot of artists aren't that.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: And so they are only privy to making the artist check, which means if I sing the song and promoters are booking me, then I make the money.
- 4:51[SPEAKER_00]: But then that takes me away from having ownership and any of these other buckets and there's so many buckets too.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: to be paid as the entertainer.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: So the blessing for us was we was writing our songs with producing our songs.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: So although we were giving away some publishing, we were at least getting some publishing, where some artists weren't getting any because they weren't writing, they weren't producing.
- 5:15[SPEAKER_00]: They don't wrote all themselves.
- 5:16[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the majority of the songs, yeah, we was writing those songs.
- 5:19[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, and Derrone was producing them.
- 5:22[SPEAKER_00]: So nobody told us coming in, hey, and advantage is to write your songs, to be have ownership of your work.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: Nobody told us that we would just, I guess God was just covering us, we would just bless in that regard to where we wanted to write our own music, didn't understand what that would really mean until years later.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_04]: got it.
- 5:44[SPEAKER_04]: So when we see these lifetime movies of like this superstar, they could just sing good, but maybe they're the best writers.
- 5:51[SPEAKER_04]: So you wrap a team of writers around them and they write the songs and you make the money.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_04]: Which I'm not really, I'm honestly not mad at, and I have this conversation about, I'm not mad at someone who takes some kids.
- 6:08[SPEAKER_04]: You don't know anything, but you about to go get a job at the pickly wiggly.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 6:12[SPEAKER_04]: But if you could say, I can teach you the game and give you a name because you know what to do with a name.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_04]: Right.
- 6:17[SPEAKER_04]: Or well, not everybody knows what to do with a name.
- 6:20[SPEAKER_04]: But if you're selling all these records, I understand, okay, you're not making much money because of how the contract is written.
- 6:26[SPEAKER_04]: But when you go perform, is that like more your money?
- 6:30[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 6:32[SPEAKER_00]: back in the day though the way that you could protect yourself from so many hands in your pocket was through the touring because nobody really could touch touring but just the artist and then their particular team.
- 6:45[SPEAKER_00]: So you have a manager, a role manager, security label doesn't take that.
- 6:49[SPEAKER_00]: No, they had no, they had no, they can put their hands on that part.
- 6:54[SPEAKER_00]: And so that's why a lot of artists from my era stayed on the road because the touring was where you would make the bulk of your money if you weren't writing and having ownership and other areas.
- 7:06[SPEAKER_00]: And so it wasn't until later on that we would start to understand royalties in the point structure and licensing and all those things, but those conversations coming to play
- 7:17[SPEAKER_00]: And fortunately for us, even unbeknownst to us, we had some ownership because we were writing the music.
- 7:25[SPEAKER_04]: Got it.
- 7:26[SPEAKER_04]: With it, we won't make it about this topic, but when, like, in terms of your contract, you said it was standard at that time.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_04]: So it wasn't like anything, you know.
- 7:38[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, people will make it, they will make it out to be, oh, I can't believe they did John like that, or, you know, Germaine or Puffy or Dallas or L.A. Reed, man, how could they sign y'all to those deals?
- 7:50[SPEAKER_00]: But the reality is a lot of them were teenagers too.
- 7:54[SPEAKER_00]: You know, Puffy started bad boy at 21.
- 7:57[SPEAKER_00]: Germaine started probably in his early 20 Dallas the same, and so in those positions, they were told what to issue,
- 8:06[SPEAKER_00]: to the artists that they signed.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I can't necessarily be like with damn puff like why are you or Kevin or Dallas because they did what they were told and then they gave it down to us.
- 8:17[SPEAKER_00]: Now at some point somebody has to break the cycle and say well this may not be the best benefit for the artists and I think as time went on, artists started to be coming more and more knowledge about the business side of it and you know big shout out to men.
- 8:31[SPEAKER_00]: Master P, and his whole independent movement back then with an understand, like, why would you sell stuff out the trunk, but he was really smart because now you take all the other hands out of the pot.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: So he really changed the game.
- 8:46[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my god, absolutely.
- 8:48[SPEAKER_00]: Absolutely changed the game.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_04]: When you started to be aware how did those conversations go?
- 8:54[SPEAKER_04]: Are you saying, yeah, I'm a
- 9:02[SPEAKER_00]: You start to see it when you say, okay, I've sold all these records, but my account is showing that or I'm still at home on my mind.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: So first album, we sell two million records, but I was still going off the road going back to my mom's crib.
- 9:18[SPEAKER_00]: because the way that it was set up, you know, it takes back then, you know, you shouldn't million dollar videos, you know, in this time's three, you know, all of the budgets were just colossal.
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: And so you figure, yeah, you're selling 2 million albums, but it probably took 40 million to make this whole thing pop the way that you all saw it from marketing, promotion, the videos, to actual record the album.
- 9:49[SPEAKER_00]: And then move around the world for guys, plus their security and road manager, some band dates.
- 9:56[SPEAKER_00]: So,
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: it just starts to accumulate into a this massive number.
- 10:03[SPEAKER_00]: But again, it wasn't until probably around album 2, what we started to see like, okay, there's a better way that we could do this.
- 10:12[SPEAKER_04]: Now, we had to steal, but you were assigned to how many albums initially.
- 10:17[SPEAKER_00]: So we had, I think our original deal was,
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: three albums, five years, or five, have been seven years, one of the two.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, that's really just changed.
- 10:26[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, no, no, no, you had to fulfill.
- 10:30[SPEAKER_00]: We had to fulfill it.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: We had to fulfill it.
- 10:32[SPEAKER_00]: And that's credit to just our courage, our stick to goodness, our resilience, that said, hey, we identify that there could be something done better.
- 10:42[SPEAKER_00]: And when we get the opportunity again, we'll be better businessmen in order to make our deals
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: after album three, we signed to Dev Jam where we was able to now, we knew what I was.
- 10:56[SPEAKER_00]: It's almost like a rookie contract, you know, you got to just ball out so you can get the hundred me.
- 11:02[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 11:03[SPEAKER_00]: And so our first three albums was like our rookie contract.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: And then album four and five when we signed to Dev Jam, we knew our value at that time and they had to come see us.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_04]: You know the crazy thing though, it seems like
- 11:16[SPEAKER_04]: Every whether there's an artist, group, whatever, chances are
- 11:22[SPEAKER_04]: You got two good albums in you anyway, you know what I mean?
- 11:25[SPEAKER_04]: So it seems like whoever's going to saw it, you know, let me just get them two, three of the best because I already put like this, that an artist spends their whole life right in their first album, which is why it's typically their best.
- 11:38[SPEAKER_04]: You spend your whole life in your bedroom like writing if you're trying to get it right.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_00]: Or up until you get the deal.
- 11:45[SPEAKER_00]: So if you got the deal at 30, well, you got 30 years of material for sure.
- 11:51[SPEAKER_04]: next year you got to give me another one and the next year so it's like it seems it seems like whoever does the initial signing is going to get the line share of the benefit but after you're a third I guess you're a third album you leave bad boy and go to Deftia yeah we leave bad boy and we went we did a bad boy death jam collaboration
- 12:16[SPEAKER_00]: album for and then purely deaf jam album five.
- 12:21[SPEAKER_04]: So you left bad boy for what reason?
- 12:24[SPEAKER_00]: Because at the time, the offer that again, it's like a free agent now.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: You know, we were able to now test the market.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: So we had meetings with Epic and Jay Records and this, just to see what everybody else felt our value was.
- 12:39[SPEAKER_00]: Again, we come
- 12:41[SPEAKER_00]: double platinum albums with at this time, we got like nine different hits, Tim did at least 10.
- 12:48[SPEAKER_00]: So we can really name our price in the offer that bad boy came, although we loved bad boy, man.
- 12:54[SPEAKER_00]: And it was like, it was the boutiqueness of bad boy.
- 12:57[SPEAKER_00]: It was the family of bad boy.
- 12:59[SPEAKER_00]: It taught us a lot, but the offer was just something that we felt like we could get more.
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: And so we just kind of we tested the market and Dev Jam gave us an offer that we just couldn't refuse.
- 13:12[SPEAKER_04]: If you could do it all over again, we would you have stayed with that boy.
- 13:17[SPEAKER_04]: So because y'all real quick, to to post credit.
- 13:23[SPEAKER_00]: He's good at it.
- 13:24[SPEAKER_00]: Oh my God, he's the best.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_04]: Oh my God, it was almost like, it's something about, and I don't think, people really value this, but it's something about someone who sees, it says, nah, we need to have the album cover, all black outfits, black and just somebody has a vision, right?
- 13:44[SPEAKER_04]: These songs are good, but these are the ones I'm telling you what's gonna go.
- 13:48[SPEAKER_04]: And I've never been a studio, but I would imagine,
- 13:51[SPEAKER_04]: That man got that gift, right?
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: No, I mean, he's definitely one of the best to do it.
- 13:57[SPEAKER_00]: And, you know, I personally learned a whole lot from, from Puff.
- 14:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think the world learned a whole lot just, you know, from his musical attributes and just what he was able to do.
- 14:07[SPEAKER_00]: But you're right, he's such a visionary.
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: He just had that gift man of just knowing what's a hit and not only Identifying the record but putting all the acculture months around it to support it in the way that makes it just become massive because
- 14:23[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, the record is one thing, but again, to our credit man, we worked on assets on like we would we did every backyard barbecue to Madison Square Garden, it didn't matter if you were a potential fan, we were going to go and see you and spend some time with you not just of.
- 14:40[SPEAKER_00]: quick hay and buy like we would sit there and then um they had the the smarts enough to take us overseas which is a whole different fan base and so not only were we nationally known but internationally from the UK, Germany, Australia, Japan like we spent a lot of time out there so when you look at the once well fan and it being like a global kind of a brand and
- 15:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's because not only did Puffy see the vision but bad boys a label understood the importance of Setting the foundation here in the states, but also taking it abroad, man, and so that's why even now as an independent artist I could still go to Australia SQ Parker because the relationship was built 30 years ago through 112 love it
- 15:25[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it's my question now is if you could have done it over again, would you have taken the lower offer to stay with bad boy or would you have done the same I probably would have done the same thing because at that time It was just really time for us to see the big chick and you don't think you ever have gotten a big check though
- 15:49[SPEAKER_00]: Over time probably, over time we probably would have, but in one walk, it's dope when somebody showed, when somebody says, I believe your worth this and I'm going to put my money where my mouth and my heart is and to see your worth being given to you across the table with some zeroes behind it.
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: It just was a wonderful feeling, man, because at that time it was like eight years into the game.
- 16:16[SPEAKER_00]: and granted, we was making, we was making money, but just that one walk, man, that just for somebody to just say, hey, I value you at this number, man, it was.
- 16:28[SPEAKER_04]: out of the four was there anybody in disagreements and now let's not take it.
- 16:33[SPEAKER_00]: No, because we had we had talked about it and we knew that that was the decision.
- 16:39[SPEAKER_00]: Do we stay here with bad boy or do we go and test the waters over here?
- 16:46[SPEAKER_00]: Now, granted, now here's the kick, here's the kickback after leaving bad boy.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: We didn't have the same amount of success as we had that bad for us in the question.
- 17:01[SPEAKER_00]: Now, but when I say the same amount, we had success, but it wasn't like just out of this world, because even with Def Jam, you already know came out on Def Jam, what if came out on Def Jam, but we had one more record that was a top 10 record at Def Jam.
- 17:24[SPEAKER_00]: At that time in our careers, we were already kind of sick because Cupid is still going to be Cupid only you, it's over now, dancing me, pieces and creams like they're now the catalog record.
- 17:36[SPEAKER_00]: So album 45 and six was just going to add to that, which you already know, add it to it, the features we did outside of the label, add it to it.
- 17:48[SPEAKER_00]: But at that time,
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: We were just going to be adding to the legacy, but the foundation was already laying from the first three albums that we did on bad, so it was really just us taking the change, do we stay here or do we just accept a new challenge?
- 18:03[SPEAKER_00]: And I think collectively we wanted a new challenge.
- 18:07[SPEAKER_04]: One thing that's heartbreaking is that it seems like it's nearly impossible for a group to stay intact 100%.
- 18:18[SPEAKER_04]: It's just tough man, like I'm thinking of every single group that I grew up listening to, whether it was voice to men, Drew, I don't know what Drew Hill got going on.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_04]: It's like seven.
- 18:34[SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, I remember.
- 18:37[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I think some left came back in one 12 is no different.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 18:43[SPEAKER_04]: Well, well, let's shout out jaggedy.
- 18:44[SPEAKER_00]: It's because jaggedy ish has always been Brandon Bryan, Kyle and Wingo.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 18:49[SPEAKER_00]: Let's do rock steel rock.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_00]: Shout out to Jaggedy.
- 18:52[SPEAKER_00]: Be shout out to Jaggedy, J.E.
- 18:53[SPEAKER_00]: Yes.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_04]: But so, I don't think I have a really like, publicly discuss it for whatever those reasons are.
- 19:01[SPEAKER_04]: But like walk me through what's happening where tension starts to build in a group like this.
- 19:08[SPEAKER_00]: So I think, man, um,
- 19:12[SPEAKER_00]: I don't even know if it starts out showing as tension, man.
- 19:15[SPEAKER_00]: It just kind of starts out as wanting to explore individuality.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: Because it's like you're going to give and take, right?
- 19:29[SPEAKER_00]: I'm going to give you a scenario.
- 19:30[SPEAKER_00]: So take you Parker.
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: From age 17, I commit to a team.
- 19:40[SPEAKER_00]: And within that team, I master my role, right?
- 19:45[SPEAKER_00]: Especially because on this team is LeBron, Kobe, Carmelo, and Jackie, like we got, we got the dream team in the four of us, no week link in the armor.
- 20:00[SPEAKER_00]: And we specifically made it that way.
- 20:02[SPEAKER_00]: You're not gonna be in this group if you can't stand on your own.
- 20:06[SPEAKER_00]: That was a prerequisite for getting into the group, right?
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: But how long do you commit to the team when there's still some things that's as an individual that you still want to attain?
- 20:22[SPEAKER_00]: Or that may not necessarily fall within the confines of the brand that you built?
- 20:27[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm not saying after year two, I'm not saying after year one, I'm not saying to me that's a no-no.
- 20:33[SPEAKER_00]: But after 20, some years, do I continue going into a vehicle that hinders me,
- 20:40[SPEAKER_00]: at some point from exploring these other options or these other opportunities that are out there.
- 20:47[SPEAKER_00]: And it's like, it's a given take.
- 20:49[SPEAKER_00]: And so for me personally, I got to a point where I wanted to explore some other things.
- 20:55[SPEAKER_00]: Now, at the time, we collectively was saying that we're going to give ourselves room to explore individuality.
- 21:02[SPEAKER_00]: Because if you're looking at numbers, because we were so equally an evenly talented,
- 21:08[SPEAKER_00]: I only had to master 25% of the 100% output.
- 21:13[SPEAKER_00]: But what happens is Q Parker leaves 75% over here in the corner for years.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_00]: And so how fair is it for me personally to leave 75% for years, just accumulating over here on the shelf and every night is like, bro, bro, what about that one idea?
- 21:33[SPEAKER_00]: And your bro, bro, bro.
- 21:36[SPEAKER_00]: And so to the public is like,
- 21:39[SPEAKER_00]: I won't want to have to always be together, or I want the bulls to always be the bulls, right?
- 21:46[SPEAKER_00]: But it just becomes one of those, it's just a tough decision, man.
- 21:51[SPEAKER_00]: And so currently, Mike and Slim are out representing the brand.
- 21:58[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm just on a Q Park remission because I just have some things that I need to really, really
- 22:06[SPEAKER_00]: Turn over before I really just say I don't want to do this anymore, and I don't know if I could have done that in 112 at the same time.
- 22:17[SPEAKER_00]: It's it's going to be a given take in you know after 25 years Have an eye deserve an opportunity to do something
- 22:27[SPEAKER_04]: So I mean, it seems like, well, we're out.
- 22:34[SPEAKER_04]: And at this time, we have lead singer, slim, lead singer.
- 22:40[SPEAKER_04]: Is there any time?
- 22:41[SPEAKER_04]: According to who?
- 22:41[SPEAKER_04]: I mean, according to, I mean, public opinion, I would think he's the lead singer.
- 22:51[SPEAKER_04]: Why would you think that?
- 22:53[SPEAKER_04]: Because it seems like he led most of us all.
- 22:57[SPEAKER_04]: Didn't know I know everybody was on the songs, but you look at Julian, do we need to do a tale of the tape?
- 23:07[SPEAKER_04]: Huh?
- 23:07[SPEAKER_04]: Do we need to do a tale of the tape?
- 23:08[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe, amazing.
- 23:11[SPEAKER_04]: Because it seems like that voice is out front of all of the, kind of maybe at the ends, the riffs, the, you don't mean, I don't know.
- 23:24[SPEAKER_04]: and maybe you're educating me now.
- 23:26[SPEAKER_04]: Maybe you're educating me now.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_04]: So, so, I mean, if I mean cute, so you would not consider him the lead singer.
- 23:34[SPEAKER_00]: There's no lead singer in one's will.
- 23:36[SPEAKER_00]: There's no lead singer in one's will.
- 23:39[SPEAKER_04]: I love all four y'all equally, but I would not say that like, my order, I would say that Michael DeRoyal was like what a lead singer.
- 23:48[SPEAKER_04]: So, voicemail, they might not say it just lead singer.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_04]: would be considered?
- 23:55[SPEAKER_04]: No?
- 23:57[SPEAKER_00]: Do you all look at that way or not?
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: So, so look, I won't speak for other groups because they're situations or they're situations.
- 24:03[SPEAKER_00]: However, I'm gonna give you some facts.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 24:06[SPEAKER_00]: When Puffy signed us, he signed us because there were four lead singers.
- 24:12[SPEAKER_00]: There's record, you can go search YouTube and all of that he'll say, I signed one twirl because there's four lead singers.
- 24:19[SPEAKER_00]: Now, to his benefit and to the smarts of Puffy,
- 24:23[SPEAKER_00]: He knew that Slim had the most distinct voice of the four.
- 24:29[SPEAKER_00]: Not just of the four, but of the traffic that was going on in that time.
- 24:35[SPEAKER_00]: Once we have Jaggedy as Drew Hill, guy, black street, boys to men, Jodacy, La Day, Manavision, Silk, ace town.
- 24:45[SPEAKER_00]: It was just a thing back in that day where it was groups.
- 24:52[SPEAKER_00]: Slam's voice was just the most distinct that immediately identified once well from jagged from this person, from this person.
- 25:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so that was so needed for us, because we needed something to cut through the traffic.
- 25:08[SPEAKER_00]: And Slam's voice was the one thing that kind of cut through the traffic.
- 25:12[SPEAKER_04]: That makes them the lead singer.
- 25:14[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, in terms of public opinion or like the perception of the group,
- 25:23[SPEAKER_00]: I can I can understand your perspective, but I'm just giving you the facts that yeah, okay, so and in so many others have that same perspective that he is But again, you know he could be your favorite, but I'm just telling you that one 12 there is no lead singer in one 12 He probably won't even tell you that he's the lead singer to be honest with you
- 25:43[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, no, I saw something he'd say it, right?
- 25:45[SPEAKER_04]: I think he probably would, he probably would, but I would, he probably would, so, but okay, so, so this becomes the question.
- 25:55[SPEAKER_04]: with four lead singers.
- 25:58[SPEAKER_04]: I can imagine and nobody can tell me any different that out of three other lead singers that aren't maybe getting the notoriety or when there's an interview they're running to the person that they won't believe will be the lead singer.
- 26:13[SPEAKER_04]: That might play on somebody that is
- 26:16[SPEAKER_04]: You know, I'm dope, you know what I mean?
- 26:19[SPEAKER_04]: Did you ever feel some way about that?
- 26:21[SPEAKER_04]: Like, brah.
- 26:22[SPEAKER_00]: Like, nah, I never felt that way.
- 26:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think any of us ever felt that way because again, man, one 12 is the epitome is and was the epitome of.
- 26:35[SPEAKER_00]: what it takes to be in a group and how to make a group function to evenly disperse the roles.
- 26:42[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody contributed.
- 26:43[SPEAKER_00]: We all saw on writers, derine, a production.
- 26:46[SPEAKER_00]: We all sang and lifted the same amount of work on it.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: Our group was never set up to boy, it was one side of it.
- 26:54[SPEAKER_00]: And so even if you say that Slim is the lead singer, if that's your opinion, he still didn't say more than the rest of us saying.
- 27:02[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_00]: So it was, I don't think envy and jealousy in our group was never been one of the things because we all evenly distributed every part of what made us work.
- 27:16[SPEAKER_04]: I think, I don't know, and maybe no one would ever admit it, but it's hard for me to believe that, and I'm not a jealous person by any stretch of the imagination, right?
- 27:29[SPEAKER_04]: But if I know in my own world,
- 27:33[SPEAKER_04]: a lead and then I come into this group and I have to play a role where maybe people don't know that I'm on this song and maybe people don't like really know that I'm the one that wrote this because the production nobody can really see it or hear it or experience it from a fans perspective.
- 27:52[SPEAKER_04]: that I'm saying, yo, it's time for me to get my own shot.
- 27:57[SPEAKER_04]: You know, because now I may feel like a almost like a background singer, not that you are, but I'm saying, I remember at one time, this is the first time I've heard this.
- 28:08[SPEAKER_04]: on Drew Hills album, Woody did this intro, and he was like, yo, people come up to me all the time saying, Woody, when you're going to do something, when they're going to let you say, listen, I'm gonna piss at 90s, that's my era, I didn't see it, work work, and he's like, yo, not knowing that I'm saying, you know, this song, that song, most of this song, like people
- 28:37[SPEAKER_04]: I heard I heard that and I said to myself in that moment There's there's a feeling of people don't know so I need people to know and if I don't get a chance to let people know this I may have some resentment at some point.
- 28:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, so 112 was
- 29:01[SPEAKER_00]: highly artist developed and the part of that artist developed meant it's media training and knowing how and when and what to say and who's going to say what and so again I don't think that that would have ever played a thing for 112 because we knew how to big each other up in how we articulated
- 29:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so we'd always give the run his props, you know, the run produced it's the run, they'd always give me my shine and this is and this was all into the answers that we would give on a regular basis.
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: How did y'all get started?
- 29:34[SPEAKER_00]: Well, we got started, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and the run was playing the keyboard and slim was over here and Q was over here, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah
- 29:47[SPEAKER_00]: articulate our answers by incorporating who did what.
- 29:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so if you are a true fan of 112, you knew, you knew, you knew, you knew, you knew, you knew, you knew, you knew Mike versus, um, derine.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so I don't think we, again, I don't, I'm not saying that doesn't play a part in any other group.
- 30:07[SPEAKER_00]: But for 112, man, we just, we just had a way of, um, accompanying each other.
- 30:14[SPEAKER_00]: In terms of who's output was what and then when you came to see our shows, even if you didn't know that Duran saying this Duran saying you on the table right here your face If you didn't know Mike saying this Mike finished show you right here if you know cute like So I thank you to experience that first Well y'all dropped that album.
- 30:40[SPEAKER_04]: I was 12
- 30:43[SPEAKER_04]: I had no business to give the songs, okay, but I love them so I think that is that.
- 30:47[SPEAKER_04]: You never got in school to go to a show, bro.
- 30:52[SPEAKER_04]: I never got a chance to go, I'm a, to experience, we're going to put that on on the bucket list, man.
- 30:58[SPEAKER_00]: Come on, man.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_00]: I should have happened.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_04]: Please.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_04]: Listen, man.
- 31:01[SPEAKER_04]: If y'all are watching this, we're going to make sure I just get one, situate y'all the other, get, get on the road together.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_04]: No, man.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_00]: You know, I just, you know,
- 31:11[SPEAKER_00]: I just always remain hopeful, you know, I have a single-up pursuit right now as I'm sure they do as well.
- 31:21[SPEAKER_00]: And it's unfortunate that the fan feels like it's one of the other.
- 31:27[SPEAKER_00]: When I believe it should be all inclusive.
- 31:30[SPEAKER_00]: I believe that you can support that brand of 112.
- 31:33[SPEAKER_00]: You can also support Q Parker, you can also support Duran or whatever because we all represent the brand.
- 31:39[SPEAKER_00]: But I do remain hopeful that there's one day that we will all be able to come together and even if it's just a swan song or just one more time for the record.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_04]: And one more time for David Shans, man, if for one tour to be your favorite group and you've never seen us perform, man, that's I feel some type of well about that and I do feel like I got to pick like I think something came across my page like from slim, I'm not liking this, I'm not going to that like button because cute Parker's my boy.
- 32:11[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I feel like I've just told you how I appreciate that.
- 32:17[SPEAKER_00]: I appreciate that.
- 32:19[SPEAKER_00]: That is me right here.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_00]: However, I'm saying man, we all represent the brand man So just as much as you support me, man, gonna like slam stuff too.
- 32:28[SPEAKER_04]: They can't do it.
- 32:29[SPEAKER_04]: I don't know if you're right there I'm the way I'm set up.
- 32:33[SPEAKER_00]: I don't go support it, man.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_00]: Because the songs are still the songs, man
- 32:40[SPEAKER_04]: And I feel like, so I feel like some happened that once was to happen and somebody got to keep Parker up said, and say, yeah, I'm about to go do what I do.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_04]: And you have done what you, I, you're, bro, it's hard to, um, to create new when you've already accomplished stuff.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_04]: Bruh and you get waves of songs even now like you know how to make a song Bruh and I think that's huge right.
- 33:10[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I think that's huge.
- 33:11[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I appreciate it, man, because, you know, you are somebody that's in my circle of friends that I value What you say and when you say so that that hits in a special place.
- 33:20[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to know that
- 33:21[SPEAKER_00]: But I think that comes from just, when I grew up playing sports and I'm super competitive, I have incredible drive and focus and determination, especially when I lock my eyes on something that I want to do, I can become so driven.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_00]: And even though, once, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12, 12,
- 33:42[SPEAKER_00]: I gave one 12 30 years.
- 33:45[SPEAKER_00]: I'll be 50 next year and I still got energy bread like I feel like I'm in my 30s.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: My voice is in great shape, my, I feel like I'm in great shape, my mind is in great shape and I can still uphold it on be kept the things that are supposed to be in the kit at a high level and so just because of my age don't mean I can't still perform and I can still do the things and once I was able to hone in on this romance space, that's just who I am, man.
- 34:23[SPEAKER_00]: I could do this in my sleep.
- 34:24[SPEAKER_04]: Now, I'm looking forward to this little series we're going to have in Atlanta, uh, let's go early.
- 34:29[SPEAKER_04]: You know, we got the studio just small intimate.

- 34:42[SPEAKER_04]: No, my phone.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_04]: Is that it?
- 34:43[SPEAKER_04]: Okay, can I have that please?
- 34:45[SPEAKER_04]: Because I've been trying to communicate with K. You said, what?

- 39:24[SPEAKER_04]: We go, we go, let y'all pick the best performer to get the red rock.
- 39:29[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, I'm going to get the red rock.
- 39:31[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, I'm going to get the red rock.
- 39:32[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah.

- 39:59[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 40:01[SPEAKER_07]: Let me get my mic.
- 40:04[SPEAKER_07]: Yeah.
- 40:08[SPEAKER_04]: Can we switch to TV?
- 40:09[SPEAKER_07]: Okay.

- 40:14[SPEAKER_07]: Let's go.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_07]: Let's go.
- 40:17[SPEAKER_07]: Let's go.

- 40:23[SPEAKER_07]: Let's go.
