- 0:25Now let's open our Bibles and study God's Word.
- 0:30Amen. I am Chris Kroger, my wife
- 0:34Nicole and I have the wonderful privilege of shepherding the
- 0:38flock at Roots Church in Monument, Co.
- 0:42We have two adult daughters, incredible young women, new moms
- 0:49and two incredible son in laws. And yes, you heard that right,
- 0:53My wife and I have officially become Nana and Papa.
- 0:57Well, actually, I take that back Lolly and Papa, I'm trying to
- 1:01get used to this. And so it is all new territory.
- 1:05Are you kidding me? We just celebrated 25 years of
- 1:07marriage this summer, this summer.
- 1:11And here's why I share this. This is, I mean, sure, I'll take
- 1:14the applause, but it's really an applause for the Lord Jesus and
- 1:18his grace. Because this is for 30 years of
- 1:28my life I rejected Jesus, 15 years of drug addiction, 15
- 1:36years of alcoholism. I abandoned that woman.
- 1:41I abandoned my daughters. And yet, the moment I cried out
- 1:49to the Lord Jesus Christ in a motel room on the West side of
- 1:54Chicago on July 7th, 2007, He saved my wretched soul.
- 2:01And so all the applause goes to the Lord.
- 2:05Man, if it's your first time, welcome.
- 2:09You grab me a tissue. It's going to be good.
- 2:12I can just sense it already. If it's your first time at
- 2:15Calvary Church, welcome. God has brought you here this
- 2:19morning to speak to you. If you personally are sitting
- 2:23here this morning and you have not personally placed your faith
- 2:26and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and His finished work
- 2:30upon the cross for you, He has brought you here this morning to
- 2:35save your soul. And He's established this day
- 2:38before the foundations of the earth.
- 2:40And if you're listening online, if you're listening on Grace FM,
- 2:44if you're watching this message later, this word is for you.
- 2:48And that word is from God to you as well.
- 3:05Over 2000 years ago, Jesus made this promise.
- 3:13I will build my church and nothing, not even the gates of
- 3:19hell, will prevail. And if you are here this morning
- 3:23and you are in Christ by faith, if you have been born again,
- 3:28born of the Spirit, born of God, born from above, you and I are
- 3:35prophetic fulfilment of that promise.
- 3:39Amen. Second Timothy 3, verse 16 and
- 3:4417 tells us all Scripture is given by inspiration of God and
- 3:51is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for
- 3:57instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be
- 4:01complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
- 4:06All Scripture, not some, is given by inspiration of God, and
- 4:11is profitable for doctrine, for teaching, for reproof, proving
- 4:15and testing, for correction. This word means restoring us to
- 4:20an upright state for instruction in righteousness, that the man
- 4:25of God may be complete, perfected, thoroughly equipped
- 4:30for every good work, the good works that God has prepared
- 4:35beforehand. Church, Ephesians 210, the work
- 4:38of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ.
- 4:42Ephesians 4, verse 12. This is God's heart, this is
- 4:47God's work, and this is God's Word, which is why Calvary
- 4:52Church, which is why we as the church place such a high value
- 4:57on the Word of God. God Himself holds it above His
- 5:03very name. So if you would do me a favour,
- 5:09would you stand with me again so we can read just a couple
- 5:13verses. We're going to be in the Gospel
- 5:15of Luke and we do this every morning at Roots Church.
- 5:17And I know we read Psalm 85 already this morning.
- 5:21But I, I pray that you would just do me the honor and that we
- 5:24would just take this moment even now for myself.
- 5:29Take this moment to quiet our minds and our hearts upon God
- 5:35and His Word and His word to us that we would receive it here
- 5:40this morning by faith. Luke chapter 4, verse 18 and 19.
- 5:47Man, I love that. I love that you guys don't have
- 5:51your phony Bibles. You have your real Bibles and
- 5:54you're turning the page. Come on, that was good.
- 5:56You know that was good phony Bible.
- 5:58Don't you get it? I stole that from another
- 6:00pastor, but I tried, OK, 845 loved it.
- 6:04I'm just saying, OK, verse 18 and like 19 of Luke chapter 4,
- 6:10the Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to
- 6:14preach the gospel to the poor. He has sent me to heal the
- 6:18broken hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and
- 6:22recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are
- 6:25oppressed, and to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.
- 6:29This is the word of God. And God, we thank you that you
- 6:32have spoken. We thank you that you are
- 6:35speaking. We thank that you desire to
- 6:37speak to each and every single one of us here this morning.
- 6:41And God, I pray that you would you would quiet our minds.
- 6:44Lord, would you quiet my mind and still our hearts upon who
- 6:48you are and what you've done and what this means for us, what
- 6:53this means for a lost and perishing world.
- 6:55God, I pray that your word would be mixed with faith.
- 6:59It is not a question of the seed.
- 7:01It is not a question of your word.
- 7:03It's a question of the soil, a question of our hearts.
- 7:07May you find, may your word find good soil here this morning,
- 7:12Lord, that it would take root in our hearts by your Spirit and
- 7:14that we would forever be changed.
- 7:16And God, I do pray. I pray for salvation.
- 7:19I pray that today you would add to the church daily those that
- 7:22are being saved. You will, you are, you already
- 7:25have at every service so far. And God, your church is
- 7:28gathering all throughout the globe, not just us here this
- 7:31morning, which is glorious God, but everywhere, brothers and
- 7:35sisters gathered together to worship you in spirit and truth
- 7:40and to receive your word to us. And so, Lord, we just give you
- 7:46ourselves this time, this space, speak to us.
- 7:51Please Lord, we deeply and desperately need to hear from
- 7:56you this morning. We pray this all in Jesus name,
- 8:01Amen and Amen. You can be seated.
- 8:02Thank you guys. What a blessing to worship the
- 8:06Lord Jesus here this morning. What incredible truths, even
- 8:09just that to recognize that God has spoken, God is speaking, and
- 8:14that yes, God desires and is speaking to his church and
- 8:18desires to speak to us this morning.
- 8:20Church, we're living in a time of global prophetic and biblical
- 8:25importance and we know as the church we are here, we are alive
- 8:30for such a time as this. We've actually been invited into
- 8:36this incredible plan of Gods, invited into his plan of
- 8:40restoration, His plan of redemption, His plan of
- 8:44reconciling everything in heaven and earth to himself.
- 8:49It's a glorious time, time to be the church.
- 8:52I hope we understand that, right?
- 8:54It can be discouraging sometimes.
- 8:56You can look around at the world around us if you turn on the
- 8:59news too frequently, see the effects of sin upon this world,
- 9:05that sin influencing our lives. And then, Oh my goodness, we can
- 9:09fall into sin. We can bring that same death and
- 9:13destruction and division, and yet God is faithful and God is
- 9:21gracious. It's a glorious time to be the
- 9:25church. And so even now this morning, as
- 9:28Hebrews 3 verse 7 and 8 says therefore, as the Holy Spirit
- 9:31says, while it is still called today, if you will hear His
- 9:36voice, do not harden your hearts.
- 9:41The Bible says that He has entrusted you and I, He has
- 9:45entrusted you and I with the gospel.
- 9:48He has entrusted us with His voice, His word, His mission to
- 9:53seek and save that which was lost.
- 9:56And gang, He is seeking and saving still today, and He will
- 10:00continue seeking and saving until He comes back for us, His
- 10:05Church. Amen.
- 10:07The mission of Jesus, the mission of His church has not
- 10:09changed. The mission of God is still for
- 10:12his people. People are never the enemy, they
- 10:14are always the goal. And so the charge remains to
- 10:18preach the gospel to a lost and dying world, ministers and
- 10:23witnesses. And so we have the prophetic
- 10:26word confirmed. Second Peter one verse 19, which
- 10:29you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place.
- 10:34Oh, thank you, Lord Church, we have the prophetic word
- 10:38confirmed. A light that shines in a dark
- 10:40place, which we do well to heed. May we receive this promise to
- 10:46us even now. May we receive His prophetic
- 10:49word to you and to me. A light that shines in a dark
- 10:53place, May we heed it for our good and His glory.
- 10:58There's an unravelling that's happening.
- 11:05You can sense it, even my unsaved family and friends are
- 11:11like what the actual heck is happening in this world?
- 11:17And yet it's all the grace of God.
- 11:21Pastor Ed says it all the time. The world's not falling apart,
- 11:24it's perfectly and prophetically falling into place.
- 11:28Amen. Sadly multitudes however, are
- 11:30ignorant to the times that we find ourselves in.
- 11:34Now. We expect this from those who do
- 11:36not know Christ, who do not know His prophetic word confirmed.
- 11:41But sadly, sadly, many in the church seem ignorant of the
- 11:45times and the seasons as well. And this shouldn't be the case.
- 11:49Many self professing Christians seem ignorance of the times and
- 11:53the seasons in which we find ourselves.
- 11:55Many confused, many concerned as though God were distant or
- 12:00uninvolved. God is not distant.
- 12:02He is here with us now. He is seeking, He is saving, He
- 12:07is speaking. Are we listening?
- 12:09Are we receiving His word with understanding?
- 12:12Have we allowed Him to remove the scales from our eyes?
- 12:16Getting every breath is life and death.
- 12:20This is not about entertainment here this morning.
- 12:22This is about the salvation of souls.
- 12:26That's what hangs in the balance.
- 12:29And they're our family and they're our friends and they're
- 12:32our neighbors and they're our Co workers and they're our
- 12:34children. Lord open our eyes.
- 12:40Second Timothy 3 verse one through 5 we read but know this,
- 12:44that in the last days perilous times will come.
- 12:49For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,
- 12:53boasters, proud blasphemers, disobedient to parents,
- 12:58unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, unforgiving,
- 13:04slanderers without self-control, brutal despisers of good
- 13:10traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than
- 13:16lovers of God having a form of of godliness, but denying its
- 13:21power. And from such people turn away
- 13:23church. These are those days, make no
- 13:28mistake. And church, these are
- 13:31exceptional, glorious days. Days the prophet spoke of,
- 13:35longed for, fasted for, and prayed for.
- 13:38We are living in those days. Never has there been a time more
- 13:43revelation and faith in God and His Word.
- 13:47Never has there been a time of such prophetic fulfillment of
- 13:51biblical prophecy in Jesus. God has entrusted you and I for
- 13:57such a time as this, and none of it is accidental.
- 14:04And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will
- 14:07pour out my Spirit on all flesh. Your sons and daughters shall
- 14:12prophecy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall
- 14:16dream dreams. I only have vision still, and on
- 14:20my maidservants and on my my men servants, I will pour out my
- 14:23spirit in those days, and they shall prophecy.
- 14:26And it shall come to pass that whoever, whoever, whoever calls
- 14:33on the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 14:35These church are those days. Amen and Amen.
- 14:42You and I will prophecy your sons and your daughters shall
- 14:45prophecy. We have the prophetic word
- 14:47confirmed. Do we believe, do we recognize,
- 14:51do we realize the time and the seasons that we find ourselves
- 14:55in and do this knowing the time Romans 1311 that now it is high
- 15:02time to awake out of sleep for now our salvation is nearer than
- 15:06when we first believed what a glorious prophetic time to be
- 15:14the church. As I prayed, as I pleaded with
- 15:19the Lord what he wanted to speak to as Pastor Eddie called and
- 15:23asked me to teach. And my immediate response is no,
- 15:26but thank you for asking no. And I was like what, what, what
- 15:31do you want? And he said, I already told you,
- 15:34he administered to me this beautiful biblical picture of
- 15:40revival in the book of Nehemiah. And so we're going to be in the
- 15:45book of Nehemiah. All of that was just warming up
- 15:52the book of Nehemiah chapter 8. And it's a picture of revival
- 16:01for us. Now, when I say revival, I, I
- 16:07know there's probably all sorts of things that run through our
- 16:10minds. But today, this morning, I want
- 16:13us to look at a biblical picture of what revival looks like.
- 16:16What the revival that God is bringing to his church looks
- 16:20like. The revival that is happening as
- 16:23we speak. The revival that God wants to
- 16:25bring to you and to me and to his church right now, if we
- 16:29would choose to believe and receive and heed His word to you
- 16:35and I, His church today, Pastor Ed says this a lot.
- 16:40And so now I say this a lot. And what we see all through the
- 16:44Word of God is the Spirit of God working through the Word of God
- 16:48and the lives of the people of God.
- 16:51And so this weekend we're going to look at a beautiful picture
- 16:53of this in Nehemiah chapter 8. Now the backdrop of this text,
- 16:58some thousand years after the time of Moses, some 400 years
- 17:03before the birth of Christ, the nation of Israel and the Jewish
- 17:06people, the people of God, are in a desperate, desperate state.
- 17:10The nations have been destroyed, the city of Jerusalem is
- 17:13completely conquered by the Babylonians, and this once
- 17:17glorious temple of Solomon has been destroyed.
- 17:20And for some 70 years, Jerusalem is a ghost town with the
- 17:24potential to end up, like many ancient cities, completely
- 17:28completely forgotten except for history.
- 17:31The book of Nehemiah begins 15 years after the Book of Ezra and
- 17:35almost 100 years after the first captives came back to the
- 17:39Promised Land, and some 150 years after the city of
- 17:44Jerusalem was destroyed. And after all this time the
- 17:48walls of the city of Jerusalem are still in rubble.
- 17:52Nehemiah is broken. One man is broken over the state
- 17:57of Jerusalem and his people. And so he prays and he fasts and
- 18:03he confesses and he repents and God answers his prayers.
- 18:09Nehemiah returns to Jerusalem, rebuilds its walls and the
- 18:15walls. After 150 years, the walls of
- 18:18Jerusalem are rebuilt in 52 days.
- 18:22God's blessing, God's favor just poured out.
- 18:26Isn't it amazing what God can do with a man or a woman of God
- 18:31that is willing to pray, fast, confess, repent, turn back to
- 18:39the Lord and do what He has called us to do?
- 18:43And So what happens? This is the backdrop.
- 18:46And then we open chapter 8 of Nehemiah and we read this.
- 18:51What is their response? Verse 1 of chapter 8.
- 18:55Now all the people gathered together as one man in the open
- 18:59square that was in front of the Watergate, and they told Ezra
- 19:03the scribe to bring the book of the Law of Moses, which the Lord
- 19:08had commanded Israel. And so Ezra the priest brought
- 19:11the law before the assembly of men and women.
- 19:14And all who could hear with understanding, all who could
- 19:18hear with understanding on the first day of the 7th month.
- 19:24And then he read it from it, from it in the open square that
- 19:29was in front of the Watergate from morning until midday,
- 19:33before the men and women and those who could understand, and
- 19:38the ears of all the people were attentive to the book of the
- 19:43Law. And so Ezra described verse 4.
- 19:46Stood on a platform of wood which they had made for the
- 19:49purpose. And beside him, at his right
- 19:51hand stood Matithiah, Shima and Anaya, Uriah, Helkaya and
- 20:00Messiah, and at his left hand Padaya, Mishael, Malachiah,
- 20:05Haishim, Hashbadana, Zechariah and Meshalom.
- 20:09O Mai I, I did my best. What do we see here?
- 20:14Look what happens. They turn back to the Lord.
- 20:19They turn back to the Word of God.
- 20:22All the people gather as one man for the reading and the teaching
- 20:27of the Word of God. That's what we're doing here
- 20:29this morning. God has brought you and I here
- 20:34this morning. May there be no mistake.
- 20:37It is the Spirit of God who has brought you and I here today.
- 20:41People do not gather as one for the things of God unless the
- 20:46Spirit of God has moved them and they read the Word for six
- 20:51hours. We'll be here for two or three,
- 20:54tops. It's the 1045 service.
- 20:59Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people, verse 5
- 21:02for he was standing above all the people, and when he opened
- 21:05it, all the people stood up. They turned back to the Lord,
- 21:10They turned back to His Word, and what happens?
- 21:12They respond to God's Word, all the people.
- 21:17When he opened it, all the people stood up, and Ezra
- 21:20blessed the Lord, the great God. And then all the people answered
- 21:24Amen and Amen while lifting their hands, and they bowed
- 21:28their heads and worship the Lord with their faces to the ground.
- 21:31They turned back to the Word of God.
- 21:33All the people gather for the reading of the Word of God, just
- 21:37like we are this morning. What we see, we must also
- 21:41respond. Cooperate with the Word of God.
- 21:45Is it mixed with faith? Are we hearing with
- 21:47understanding? We must cooperate with the Word,
- 21:51cooperate with the work. Not resisted church.
- 21:55They receive the Word and God and respond, responding with
- 22:00Amen and Amen and lifting up their hands and bowing their
- 22:03faces to the ground. They're humbled and they respond
- 22:07in worship. Our response to the Word of God.
- 22:09Church is and always should be the worship of God, worshipping
- 22:13God together as we gather corporately, Yes, but also
- 22:18living lives of worship, worshiping God with all of our
- 22:23lives, ministers and witness, witnesses of this good news.
- 22:27Living the gospel, yes, heralding, sharing the gospel of
- 22:33the Lord Jesus Christ in Word, but also indeed, are we living
- 22:37the gospel? Are you living the gospel?
- 22:39Am I living the gospel in our homes, in our marriages with our
- 22:43children? Do your children see the power
- 22:47of the one true living God in your marriage?
- 22:49A picture of Christ's marriage to the church?
- 22:54Do your Co workers see the gospel lived out in your life?
- 22:58In my life We see this beautiful humble response as they receive
- 23:07and respond to the Word of God, the Spirit of God working
- 23:11through the Word of God and the people of God and the response
- 23:15and the people of God is awe in reverence perspective, eternal
- 23:19inspective, perspective in light of who God is in our position.
- 23:26God, the true shepherd, us, each and every one of us, his
- 23:29children, his under shepherds, humbled, standing, they respond,
- 23:35honoring, receiving, lifting their hands, bowing their heads,
- 23:39faces to the ground, believing and receiving and responding.
- 23:43The Spirit of God working through the word of God in the
- 23:47lives of the people of God. Oh, we have more names.
- 23:52Verse 7 Also Joshua Bani Shirabaya, Jamin Akub, Shabathi,
- 23:58Hodaja Mesa, Kalita Azariah, Josephad, Hannan Pelaya, and the
- 24:05Levites helped the people to understand the law and the
- 24:10people stood in their place. So they read distinctly from the
- 24:14book in the law of God and they gave sense and help them
- 24:19understand the reading. That's what your pastors do here
- 24:25at Calvary Church, reading the word, bringing understanding.
- 24:29They they give sense and help them understand the word of God.
- 24:33That's what I hope to do this weekend.
- 24:36Every time I am privileged to preach the very word of God that
- 24:40we all would leave here with a greater understanding of God, a
- 24:45greater worship of God and what's the result We see this
- 24:51perspective that comes verse 9 and Nehemiah who was the
- 24:56governor, Ezra the priest and scribe and the Levites who
- 25:00taught the people said to all the people, this day is holy to
- 25:05the Lord your God. Do not mourn nor weep for all
- 25:09the people wept when they heard the words of the law.
- 25:13And then he said to them, go your way, eat the fat, drink the
- 25:17sweet and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared for
- 25:22this day is holy to our God. Do not sorrow, for the joy of
- 25:28the Lord is our strength. And so the Levites quieted all
- 25:32the people saying, be still, for the day is holy, do not be
- 25:35grieved. And all the people went their
- 25:37way to eat and to drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly,
- 25:43because they understood the words that were declared to
- 25:47them. Incredible.
- 25:50You see the pastors and the leaders, they're bringing
- 25:52understanding of the Word, bringing a greater understanding
- 25:56of God and his heart for his people, bringing this proper
- 26:00perspective. They're thanking God, they're
- 26:03praying, they're responding in worship, and what happens, God
- 26:07breaks their heart for what breaks his.
- 26:10A broken and contrite spirit is a beautiful thing.
- 26:14We all, we can't even come to God until we recognize our total
- 26:19bankruptcy. Blessed are the poor in spirit,
- 26:23for they shall inherit the Kingdom of God, and so He breaks
- 26:28their heart for what breaks His. But we see their brokenness.
- 26:33May all this brokenness never outweigh the glory and the
- 26:37goodness of God. It leads us to the reality that
- 26:41God is doing and always moving and always doing a holy work
- 26:45among His people, leading us to the reality that God is good,
- 26:50God is gracious, and nothing is going to stop him.
- 26:53Our knowledge of our sin never outweighing the reality of a
- 26:58risen Savior and the grace that he pours out upon you and me by
- 27:04His grace through faith. And so the Levites verse 11
- 27:09quieted all the people saying be still for the day is holy, do
- 27:12not be grieved. And all the people went their
- 27:14way to eat and drink, to send portions and rejoice greatly
- 27:20because they understood the words.
- 27:22They understood the words that were declared to them.
- 27:27They went away praising God because they had a greater
- 27:29understanding of God's Word, bringing a greater understanding
- 27:33of God Himself, bringing perspective, overwhelmed by the
- 27:37grace of God and His grace upon His people, His relentless love
- 27:41for His people, and they rejoice greatly.
- 27:45Therefore, the joy of the Lord is your strength.
- 27:49Even when we're being convicted of our sin, which is actually a
- 27:54beautiful and glorious thing, we know the conviction is from God
- 28:00to draw us back, back to him that we would confess that we
- 28:04would repent. I don't know about you.
- 28:07A confession and repentance is like, that's my actual full time
- 28:11job, OK? Confessing and repenting all the
- 28:15time driving around in my car, confessing and repenting,
- 28:20confessing and repenting this morning before I stand up here
- 28:24before you church. God, hold not my sin against me,
- 28:31for your name's sake, for your glory, for your people.
- 28:36May we have a spirit of confession and repentance.
- 28:39Maybe that's a word for you this morning.
- 28:41Maybe there are areas in your life that there needs to be
- 28:45confession and repentance. Amen.
- 28:47Confess, repent, turn back to the Lord Church, may we take
- 28:54heart in the word of the living God.
- 28:56The prophetic word confirmed a light that shines in a dark
- 29:01place, which you and I do well to heed in verse 13.
- 29:05Now on the second day, the heads of the Father's houses, of all
- 29:09the people, with the priests and Levites, were gathered to Ezra
- 29:14the scribe, in order to understand the words of the Law.
- 29:19And they found written in the law which the Lord had commanded
- 29:22by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths
- 29:26during the feast of the 7th month.
- 29:28And that they should announce and proclaim in all their cities
- 29:31and in Jerusalem, saying, Go out to the mountain and bring olive
- 29:34branches, branches of oil trees, Myrtle branches, palm branches,
- 29:39and branches of leafy trees to make booths, as it is written.
- 29:44Then the people went out, and they brought them and made
- 29:48themselves booths. So they obey the word of God,
- 29:51each one on the roof of his house, or in their courtyards,
- 29:54or in the courts of the House of God, and in the open square of
- 29:57the Watergate, and in the open square of the gate of Ephraim.
- 30:01So the whole assembly of those who had returned from the
- 30:04captivity made booths and sat under the booths.
- 30:08For since the days of Joshua the son of Nun, until that day the
- 30:13children of Israel had not done so.
- 30:16And there was very great gladness also, day by day, from
- 30:23the first day until the last day, he read from the book of
- 30:27the law of God. And they kept the feast 7 days.
- 30:31And on the 8th day there was a sacred assembly according to the
- 30:35prescribed manner. And so we see the the leaders
- 30:41gather together, and Ezra is continuing in the word of God
- 30:46with them. And as they're studying, they
- 30:49realize there are things that they had not been doing for a
- 30:53very long time. And so they choose simple
- 31:01obedience. Hey, we should probably start
- 31:05doing that. Like it's so it's so beautifully
- 31:08simple. Like you read it and you're
- 31:09like, oh, well, am I doing that? It's why it's so important for
- 31:13you and I to be in the word and yielded to the word and
- 31:18obedience in our lives. I think of this as as pastor,
- 31:25how deeply important this is, you know, like getting into the
- 31:28word of God and, and sometimes, you know, we we're like, wait a
- 31:35second, why aren't we doing this or personalized.
- 31:40Why, why am I not doing this in my life?
- 31:44Lord, forgive me. Help me to walk in obedience to
- 31:47you, your call upon my life for sometimes why on earth am I
- 31:52doing this? Why are we doing this?
- 31:56Can I tell you as a church planner like this is deeply
- 31:58important because man, people have all sorts of
- 32:01recommendations and ideas of what I should be doing as a
- 32:05pastor at Ruth's church or what Ruth's church should be doing.
- 32:09But I, I have to go to the Lord to really know and to hear,
- 32:13Lord, what would you have us do? Shepherd the flock, preach my
- 32:20word, make disciples. Boom.
- 32:25It's so beautifully simple. They're areas of obedience,
- 32:29areas of disobedience in our lives.
- 32:31The word God by His Spirit will reveal them to us.
- 32:35We see they obey God. Beautiful, simple obedience.
- 32:38God said it, so we will do it. I think of the words of Jesus
- 32:44and John 14 verse 23 and 24. If anyone loves me, he will keep
- 32:48my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to Him and
- 32:54make our home with Him. He who does not love me does not
- 32:59keep my word, and the word which you hear is not mine, but the
- 33:05Father's who sent me. Lord, help us walk in obedience.
- 33:09And that's the beautiful reality.
- 33:11It's the Spirit of God in you. It's the Spirit of God in me
- 33:15that even enables me to walk in this beautiful newness of life
- 33:22and obedience that He has called me.
- 33:25And you, if you are in Christ too.
- 33:27Amen. And there was very great
- 33:31gladness. Verse 18 also, day by day, from
- 33:34the first day until the last day, he read from the book of
- 33:37the law of God. And they kept the feast 7 days.
- 33:41And on the 8th day there was a sacred assembly according to the
- 33:46prescribed manner. This revival that we read about
- 33:53in Nehemiah chapter 8 began by the Spirit of God working
- 34:00through the Word of God. And we see that is how it
- 34:04continued. They turn back to the Word of
- 34:07God. They are obedient to the Word of
- 34:10God. This brings perspective, this
- 34:13brings joy. The Spirit of God working
- 34:16through the Word of God in the lives of the people of God.
- 34:19And they continue in the Word of God and God continues to bless.
- 34:24And the response you see at the beginning of Chapter 9 of
- 34:27Nehemiah, on the 24th day of the same month, the Israelites
- 34:32gathered together, fasting and wearing sackcloth and putting
- 34:37dust on their heads. Those of Israelite descent had
- 34:40separated themselves from all foreigners.
- 34:43They stood in their places, confessed their sins and the
- 34:46sins of their ancestors. They stood where they were and
- 34:50read from the book of the Law of the Lord their God for 1/4 of
- 34:54the day and spent another quarter in confession and
- 34:59worshipping the Lord their God. Humble confession and
- 35:06repentance. The people stand and confess
- 35:09their sin after the the people had heard and obeyed God's Word,
- 35:14after the Holy Spirit had so faithfully already done such an
- 35:19incredible work. In the people of God there is
- 35:22authentic and ongoing humble confession and repentance.
- 35:30Spurgeon says this on repentance.
- 35:32It's so beautiful. He says repentance grows as
- 35:37faith grows. Isn't that true for you, true
- 35:41for me? As we continue and grow in our
- 35:44faith, the longer we walk with and serve the Lord, Oh my
- 35:49goodness, confession and repentance grows only more, He
- 35:53says. Do not make any mistake about
- 35:56it. Repentance is not a thing of
- 35:58days and weeks, a temporary penance to be got over as fast
- 36:03as possible. No, it is the grace of a
- 36:06lifetime. Like faith itself.
- 36:10Repentance is the inseparable companion of faith.
- 36:16Amen. The Spirit of God, working
- 36:21through the Word of God in the lives of the people of God,
- 36:25brings revival. And what does revival look like?
- 36:29It looks like turning back to the Word of God, obeying the
- 36:34Word of God, praying and fasting and obeying, Oh my confessing
- 36:41and repentance resulting in spirit filled worship and
- 36:46adoration of the one true living God.
- 36:49It's beautiful. Chapter 9, I'll just read a
- 36:54couple more verses. Verse 4 standing on the stairs
- 36:56of the Levites, where Joshua and all these others, and they cried
- 37:02out with loud voices to the Lord their God.
- 37:04And the Levites said, stand up and praise the Lord your God,
- 37:11who is from everlasting to everlasting.
- 37:14Blessed be your glorious name, and may it be exalted above all
- 37:18blessing and praise you alone. Our Lord, you made heavens, You
- 37:23made even the highest heavens and all their starry host, the
- 37:28earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is as in them.
- 37:31You give life to everything and the multitudes of heaven worship
- 37:37you. Incredible, incredible.
- 37:39The Spirit of God working through the word of God and the
- 37:43lives of the people of God. And you can go and read Chapter
- 37:469 on your own, but it just continues for the rest of the
- 37:51chapter. Proper perspective and worship
- 37:54of God as a result of turning back to Him, turning back to His
- 37:59Word, receiving it and responding to it, obeying it,
- 38:04provoking confession, ongoing humble confession and
- 38:09repentance, bringing perspective and the worship, the adoration
- 38:15of the one true, living God. It's beautiful.
- 38:18This is what revival looks like. This is what God is doing in His
- 38:24church. Everyone of us, myself included,
- 38:28turn to the Word of God. The Word became flesh and dwelt
- 38:33among us. We must also cooperate, respond
- 38:40to it, receive it, believe it, walk in obedience to it.
- 38:44Hearing the Word, receiving the Word, believing God out His
- 38:47Word, submitting to the Word of God, allowing the full work of
- 38:51God in you and in me and in His church.
- 38:54Praying and fasting for a move of God, confessing and repenting
- 39:00regularly. Living a life of worship as we
- 39:04worship God alone, who is worthy of our worship, who alone is
- 39:09worthy of our praise. May we stand up and praise the
- 39:14Lord our God who is from everlasting to everlasting.
- 39:18And, and remember, you know the story of Nehemiah.
- 39:21How did all of this come about? How did it all start with one
- 39:25man, One man broken over his sin, broken over the sin of his
- 39:30father's, broken over the sin of his people.
- 39:34He confesses, he repents and he begs and pleads with God.
- 39:41Isn't it amazing what God can do with one man or one woman of God
- 39:47that is willing to pray and fast, confess and repent, to
- 39:53turn back to the Lord and to do what God has called you and I to
- 39:58do, the Spirit of God through the Word of God in the people of
- 40:03God revival? I need it, you need it.
- 40:08God's church desperately needs it.
- 40:11Because from revival, awakening comes as we partner with the
- 40:19mission of God, as we go therefore, and make disciples,
- 40:25as we share the good news of who Jesus is and what He has come
- 40:28here to do for this world. Chuck Smith says it is high time
- 40:36for us to put off the works of darkness and put on the Lord
- 40:39Jesus Christ. It is time for us to live and to
- 40:44walk after the Spirit. May God awaken His church and
- 40:48challenge us by His word to righteous, holy living.
- 40:53True revivals, Church true awakenings are always marked by
- 40:58confession and repentance and turning back to the Lord.
- 41:02That the answer is always turn back to the Lord this morning.
- 41:06If you have never turned to the Lord, turn to the Lord for the
- 41:09first time this morning. Even if you have been walking
- 41:13with the Lord for years, the answer is always turn back to
- 41:16the Lord. Confess, repent, or press into
- 41:20the Lord all the more allow Him to encourage you here this
- 41:23morning through His word and by his Spirit.
- 41:26His prophetic word confirmed. The verse is that the refreshed
- 41:33conference comes from Acts 3 verse 19 and 20.
- 41:38Cannot wait to party with you at the refresh conference in just a
- 41:42matter of weeks really. But Acts 3 verse 19 says, Repent
- 41:47therefore and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,
- 41:54that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the
- 41:59Lord, and that He may send the Christ appointed for you Jesus.
- 42:05And revival starts in the same place that judgment does in the
- 42:14House of the Lord. It starts with me, it starts
- 42:19with you. God must take a man before he
- 42:22can take a city. Actually, God can do whatever he
- 42:25wants, but it starts with one. It starts with one.
- 42:29It's glorious, it's beautiful. Church, these are exceptional
- 42:34days, prophetic days, and God has trusted you and I for such a
- 42:43time as this. No accident.
- 42:49The sure first step of revival. A broken, humble, contrite
- 42:57spirit, only possible by being born again, born of God, born of
- 43:05the Spirit by faith. The Bible says that God has put
- 43:11eternity into every human heart. Ecclesiastes 3 verse 11.
- 43:20Now I know, I know. The world has done everything in
- 43:24its power to take this from you. They've lied to you.
- 43:31They're lying to you. They lied to me, and they're
- 43:33lying to me still. That there is no God, there is
- 43:38no creator, there is nothing supernatural.
- 43:41There is nothing beyond this life.
- 43:43That you and I are meaningless accidents, a byproduct of
- 43:47millions and billions. And yet everything in you,
- 43:50everything in our very core, knows that this is not true,
- 43:56because God has put eternity in your heart and mind.
- 44:02The true and divine ache of every man, woman and child.
- 44:06But what happens? We misdiagnose it.
- 44:08We misdiagnosed this longing. We misdiagnosed this ache and we
- 44:12try to fill it with anything and everything we can find and Oh my
- 44:18goodness, this world. Pedals and pedals and pedals.
- 44:21Anything and everything you could possibly imagine.
- 44:25And yet none of it, if we are capable of being fully honest
- 44:29with ourselves, works. It doesn't work.
- 44:33It can't work. That ache is divine and can only
- 44:41be filled by the God of heaven and earth, who sent His one and
- 44:45only begotten Son for you and for me.
- 44:49Man, I remember this. I remember that feeling.
- 44:53Do you remember before turning to the Lord?
- 44:56Do you remember before you were born again by faith?
- 45:00Oh my goodness, 30 years of my life, I refused God wretched in
- 45:06my sin ratchet in the the things that I said of Jesus and it
- 45:13almost killed me. I almost died in that I knew the
- 45:17things I was doing wasn't working.
- 45:19I couldn't find it in my wife. I couldn't find it in my
- 45:22daughters. I couldn't find it in drugs or
- 45:25alcohol. I couldn't find it in in the job
- 45:28title. I couldn't find it in Nothing
- 45:30Works, but it was a horribly scary place to be.
- 45:34But it's glorious and it's divine so that I would cry out
- 45:38to the Lord. And Oh my goodness, thank you,
- 45:40Lord, that I did. Forever changing the trajectory
- 45:44of my life. Finally coming home.
- 45:46That divine ache, that divine longing, filled by the Holy
- 45:53Spirit, filled by the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 45:59The Bible even tells us that we suppress the truth in
- 46:01unrighteousness. In our pride, we refuse to
- 46:03acknowledge this. Sadly, some of us will remain in
- 46:06the state, rejecting Jesus, rejecting God.
- 46:09But we do not have to. You do not have to.
- 46:13We can instead humble ourselves and choose to receive the truth.
- 46:16Instead of suppressing the truth.
- 46:19We can allow all of this to lead us to God.
- 46:22And all of this is biblical. Acts 17.
- 46:26You guys are going through a series through the book of Acts.
- 46:28We are too. Oh, it's glorious.
- 46:31But in Acts 17, verse 23, we read.
- 46:34Therefore the one whom you worship without knowing Him, I
- 46:38proclaim to you God who made the world and everything in it.
- 46:42Since he is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples
- 46:46made with hands, nor is He worshipped with men's hands as
- 46:50though he needed anything. Since He gives life to all,
- 46:54breath in all things, and He is made from one blood.
- 46:58Every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth and
- 47:02has determined their pre appointed.
- 47:05Your pre appointed, my pre appointed times in the very
- 47:09boundaries of our dwelling, so that they should seek.
- 47:13So that we should seek the Lord in the hope that we might grow
- 47:17for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.
- 47:22For in Him we live and move and have our being.
- 47:27Do we understand this? How beautiful this is the heart
- 47:31of God. Everything in your life,
- 47:34everything in my life, the good, the bad, even the ugly.
- 47:39I'm sorry for the sin that you've experienced, even the
- 47:42sin, the effects of sin in a broken world.
- 47:46I'm sorry for what has happened to you in your life.
- 47:49But do you understand that all of it, all of it is divinely
- 47:52orchestrated? Not so that you would not I out
- 47:55to God, not so that you wouldn't know the one true living God,
- 47:58but so that you would so that I would.
- 48:02He is not far from any one of us and He has done everything
- 48:06necessary for you and I to have relationship with Him, to be
- 48:17saved by His grace in and through His one and only
- 48:20begotten Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, the one true living God
- 48:23over all of creation. God has placed eternity in our
- 48:29hearts. Eternity is real and the
- 48:34preparation for eternity happens now in this life.
- 48:38You can know Him and His love for you.
- 48:41You can spend eternity with Him if you would simply humble
- 48:46yourself, if you would choose to believe and receive the Lord
- 48:50Jesus Christ. And it shall come to bath that
- 48:54whoever calls upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
- 49:01Behold, now is the acceptable time.
- 49:04Behold, now is the day of salvation.
- 49:09Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says today, today if you will
- 49:14hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.
- 49:19Now then, we as ambassadors for Christ, as though God were
- 49:22pleading through us, we implore you on Christ's behalf, be
- 49:27reconciled to God, for He made him who knew no sin to be sin
- 49:33for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in him.
- 49:39Are you kidding me? Oh, God calls to you today.
- 49:45Be reconciled to me. The worship team's going to come
- 49:49up and we're going to close. The Bible tells us that the Word
- 49:57is actually near you and I in our mouth, in our heart.
- 50:03That is the Word of Faith which we preach, that if you confess
- 50:08with your mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in your heart that
- 50:12God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
- 50:17For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the
- 50:20mouth confession is made unto salvation.
- 50:26That is how we're born again by faith as we believe in our
- 50:32hearts and we confess with our mouths and something the Lord
- 50:37was putting on my heart, I've been praying over and just
- 50:40recognizing again the fear of man.
- 50:45I almost died in my sin and trespass.
- 50:48I almost died eternally separated from the God who loved
- 50:52me and gave himself for me because I was afraid of what the
- 50:55person to my left would think or the person to my right would
- 50:59think or what my family would think or what you would think.
- 51:03And it's, it's so foolish. It's not just foolish, it's
- 51:07tragic. And so even now, God, I pray
- 51:12against the fear of man that would keep us from turning to
- 51:16you, perhaps for the first time this morning.
- 51:18God, perhaps you are speaking, you are speaking to hearts this
- 51:24morning. And so I pray against the fear
- 51:28of man, and I pray that you would provoke that awe, that
- 51:32reverence, that fear of you and you alone that would reign over
- 51:36everything. Even now, in this moment, I pray
- 51:39against the fear of man in any of us that would cause us not to
- 51:42confess and repent and turn back to a loving and gracious God.
- 51:47Turn back to His Word, respond to His Word, receive His Word,
- 51:53and live out this incredible call and charge upon us as His
- 51:58Church. This is God's word, this is God,
- 52:03God's word, this is what God is doing.
- 52:05This is the revival that God is bringing in my heart and in your
- 52:10heart in His church. If you're here this morning and
- 52:14you know God is calling you personally to be reconciled to
- 52:17God, would you raise your hand and pray?
- 52:19That's me. God is speaking to me right
- 52:21here, right now. I know that's me, God.
- 52:25I confess and I repent. I am a Sinner and I need you to
- 52:28save me. Is that you today?
- 52:33Right now, This morning? I can remember this moment like
- 52:36it was yesterday. What?
- 52:39Man? Still one of the most glorious
- 52:41church services I've ever been to.
- 52:43And I was by myself in a shady motel on the West side of
- 52:47Chicago. But it forever changed my life.
- 52:50I finally came to the end of myself, finally came to the end
- 52:53of myself and cried out to a God that I didn't know.
- 52:56And He saved me in the twinkling of an eye.
- 52:59Maybe that's your story this morning, that this morning on
- 53:05the 1st of September, God called you to himself.
- 53:15Maybe you're listening online. Maybe you're watching this
- 53:18sermon days or weeks from now. This word is from God to you.
- 53:27If that's you, you can choose right here, right now to choose
- 53:30to place your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ and His
- 53:34finished work for you. He loves you.
- 53:39He came here for you. Yet while we were still sinners,
- 53:44He died upon a cross for our sin.
- 53:46He, He lived the life we couldn't live, that we are
- 53:51incapable of living. And then he died the death that
- 53:53we actually deserve. But out of the third day, he
- 53:56rose from the grave, conquering sin, conquering death for all of
- 54:01eternity, and proving himself to be God.
- 54:07And so this morning you can pray.
- 54:08God, I believe I receive. I choose to place my faith and
- 54:13trust in you Jesus, your finished work for me by faith in
- 54:20Jesus name. I pray if you're listening
- 54:24again, even if it didn't happen here this morning, look it, this
- 54:28is for you. We believe in our hearts and we
- 54:34confess you. Lord Jesus, we praise you and
- 54:38thank you. Thank you for your word.
- 54:39Again, I pray that You would establish Your Word in each of
- 54:42our hearts by Your Spirit and that we would forever be
