- 0:25Here's Pastor Ed to take us into our study.
- 0:30If you have a Bible open, it's a Second Corinthians chapter 5.
- 0:36There's a lot of different places we could go for a time
- 0:39like this, but we'll we'll use Second Corinthians 5 to anchor
- 0:43us into our time today. And so, Father, we're grateful
- 0:47as we sing together here on a different day of the week.
- 0:50We don't typically come together at noon on Friday.
- 0:54So thank you for the privilege. Also for everyone joining us
- 0:58live on the radio right now, we we don't typically have a live
- 1:01broadcast to our city at 5 or at noon.
- 1:05So we're grateful for that privilege as well.
- 1:08And we welcome everyone God and just invite them into our room
- 1:12here. They're watching online as we in
- 1:16our own minds attempt to accept and to receive what this day
- 1:22represents. And although we don't know the
- 1:25exact day, we know it happened and we're grateful for it as we
- 1:31commemorate and memorialize a very most important Day in
- 1:37History in Jesus name, Amen. When Jesus instituted communion,
- 1:44he took the bread and he says to remember his broken body for you
- 1:50and he says to take the cup which is his blood shared shed
- 1:54for you and Good Friday remember reminds us of these important
- 1:58instructions. Today is known as God's most
- 2:03painful moment, the most painful moment that Jesus experienced
- 2:08and together we remember the price that was paid for our
- 2:12salvation, the forgiveness of our sins, Jesus body broken.
- 2:18We know Jesus hung on a cross, a Roman cross that was used and
- 2:23reused many, many times. But before the cross he endured
- 2:27what's known as the scourging. Roman scourging where they would
- 2:31have two scourges on either side of the victim, taking turns
- 2:35whipping the criminal, or that the one that was accused of
- 2:41crimes. Where their muscles would be
- 2:43lacerated, their veins and arteries would be torn open, and
- 2:47it was not uncommon for kidneys and spleen and other organs to
- 2:51be exposed and slashed. And most almost always a man
- 2:56would die under this, not having to face the cross.
- 3:00And yet Jesus endured to the end, would then take and pick up
- 3:05his cross, the cross beam carrying its load on his beat up
- 3:09body. Crucifixion was a cruel way to
- 3:13die. Crucifixion was invented by the
- 3:16Persians, but it was perfected by the Romans.
- 3:22Klausner, the Jewish writer, says that crucifixion is the
- 3:25most terrible and cruel death which man has ever devised for
- 3:30taking vengeance on his fellow men.
- 3:33And the Romans perfected this and used it not merely as a
- 3:38punishment, but more as an example not to mess with Rome.
- 3:44And Rome kept it exclusively for rebels, runaway slaves and the
- 3:49lowest types of criminals. So cruel was crucifixion that
- 3:55Rome did not use it on their own citizens.
- 3:58There was another way for their own citizens to face the penalty
- 4:02of their crimes. Crucifixion would have involved
- 4:05laying Jesus on his open, lacerated, bleeding back on the
- 4:10huge, rough, splintery cross. The Roman soldiers would take
- 4:16spikes 5 to 7 inches long, hammer them between the two arm
- 4:21bones at the wrist, crushing the medial nerve.
- 4:25A man would die by either asphyxiation or cardiac arrest,
- 4:30The most torturous, painful way for a person to die, as we will
- 4:35in just a moment when we take communion together, these
- 4:38elements that are are symbolic. We're trying in our imagination,
- 4:43spiritually to think upon the price that Jesus paid.
- 4:49You see, what made the price Jesus paid even more severe is
- 4:53that he was innocent, completely innocent.
- 4:59And this was a choice that He made on our behalf.
- 5:02The cross represents not just the torturous, painful way for a
- 5:07person to die, but the cross as it relates to Jesus represents
- 5:11His life exchanged for your life and mine, His perfect, sinless
- 5:17offering providing the way of escape.
- 5:20I asked you to open the Second Corinthians in chapter 5 and
- 5:23verse 21. Good Friday reminds me of this
- 5:27very important truth Paul writes under the inspiration of the
- 5:33Holy Spirit. For he made him who knew no sin
- 5:37to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God
- 5:43in him. Jesus hanging on the cross
- 5:46suffered in silence throughout all the hours of interrogation,
- 5:51torture and agony. In Isaiah chapter 53 verse
- 5:55seven, He was oppressed and he was afflicted, yet He opened not
- 5:59his mouth. He was led as a lamb to the
- 6:02slaughter and as a sheep before his Shearer as a silent, so he
- 6:06opened not his mouth. And yet when the weight of
- 6:09humanity sins was poured out upon him, he cries out.
- 6:13He cries out. In Matthew's Gospel in chapter
- 6:1627, we learn about the 9th hour. Jesus cried out with a loud
- 6:21voice saying Eli, Eli, Lama Sabakhtani, that is my God.
- 6:26My God, why have you forsaken me?
- 6:30This is the expression of his heart and his emotions at the
- 6:35time. Forsaken here literally means to
- 6:38be deserted, to be abandoned or rejected.
- 6:42And these words are shocking to us, shocking to us as a relate
- 6:47to Jesus. And yet for some of you, you
- 6:50know, in a very personal way, in a very relatable way, what it's
- 6:55like to be forsaken or abandoned or to be rejected.
- 7:01It's a deep, searing personal pain that Jesus is crying out.
- 7:05These were not delusions of a man in pain.
- 7:07He, he, they, they weren't, these weren't delusional.
- 7:10He was fully conscious. As Jesus was sharing these
- 7:13things, his faith was not failing him.
- 7:15I believe as Jesus was hanging there at this moment, he was
- 7:19bearing the sins of the world. He was dying as a substitute for
- 7:24us. But it's important that we
- 7:26personalize this, not just in the abstract or in the broad
- 7:29perspective, but it's important that we personalize this for us
- 7:33individually. He was burying my sins and your
- 7:38sins in this moment. To Him was imputed the guilt of
- 7:43all of our sins. He was suffering the necessary
- 7:46punishment for those sins on our behalf, and the essence of that
- 7:52punishment was the outpouring of God's wrath.
- 7:56In some mysterious way that we can never fully understand.
- 8:00During these awful hours on the cross, the Father was pouring
- 8:03out the full measure of His wrath against sin, and the
- 8:07recipient of that wrath was not you and was not me, but was
- 8:13gone. God's own beloved Son.
- 8:15Listen, God was punishing Jesus as if He had personally
- 8:20committed every wicked deed committed by every wicked
- 8:25Sinner, and in doing so He could treat and forgive those redeemed
- 8:30ones as if they had lived Christ's perfect life.
- 8:35We know this event happened. We know there was a moment at
- 8:38Calvary when the sin of the world was put upon him.
- 8:41And even as we read in 2nd Corinthians 5, Jesus, He became
- 8:45sin even though He knew no sin, so that we might become the
- 8:50righteousness of God. Here's the significance both of
- 8:53the statement of Jesus, but also of the issue of sin when it
- 8:57comes to remembering the cross. And that is sense produces
- 9:01separation. The Bible would say that the
- 9:05wages of sin is death, but the Bible defines death as
- 9:09separation. And any one of us, we can
- 9:13examine our lives and see the separation that sin brings, the
- 9:17death of relationships and friendships and all sorts of of
- 9:22connections that we've had that sin is broken.
- 9:25The Bible says that God can't look upon sin.
- 9:28In Habakkuk chapter one verse 13, the Bible says that God is
- 9:32of purer eyes than to behold evil and cannot look on
- 9:36wickedness. And so why do you look on those
- 9:38who dealt treacherously? The writer says Jesus was
- 9:42forsaken by God so that we would never have to be.
- 9:46Hebrews chapter 13 and verse 5 says that your conduct be
- 9:49without covetousness. Be content with such things as
- 9:53you have, for he himself has said I will never leave you nor
- 9:59forsake you. And John records for us these
- 10:02final words in John 19 verse 30, that when Jesus received the
- 10:06sour wine, he said it is finished and bowing his head, He
- 10:13gave up his spirit. It's more than just a Good
- 10:17Friday. Traditionally today represents a
- 10:20great day because God did such a great thing.
- 10:23Your sins can be forgiven and washed clean.
- 10:27The the reality of what Jesus has done for us has not just
- 10:31enabled us to attend another religious service or to become a
- 10:35repetitively moral religious person.
- 10:39The death of Jesus Christ, his beating and the blood that was
- 10:42shed invites you into relationship to break and to to
- 10:46heal. Really the separation that was
- 10:48created by our own sin. Today you can say, God, I'm a
- 10:52Sinner, I admit it, and I receive the forgiveness that
- 10:56comes to your blood that was shed at Calvary because we know
- 11:00the rest of the story. On Good Friday they take him off
- 11:02the cross, they put him in a tomb, and they move on and live
- 11:06life as if everything's lost, as if all that they lived the last
- 11:11three years was just gone in a moment.
- 11:14But God was working behind the scenes.
- 11:16We know that Jesus said that three after three days he would
- 11:20rise again from the dead. And indeed, he did that.
- 11:24And as you turn your life toward Jesus Christ, you accept his
- 11:28forgiveness afresh and anew. You receive power and strength
- 11:34and vitality. Would you take out the elements
- 11:39for communion? You have them there.
- 11:48I want to tie in today communion with the cross, the importance
- 11:53of the cross. Thank you.
- 11:58In Paul's letter to the Ephesians that we are studying
- 12:02as a church, we will get to this prayer.
- 12:04It's a very powerful prayer that Paul shares with the believers
- 12:09in Ephesus, and he says this in Ephesians chapter 3, verse 17.
- 12:14He says that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, that
- 12:18you being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend
- 12:23with all the Saints what is the width and the length and the
- 12:28depth and height to know the love of Christ which passes
- 12:34knowledge that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
- 12:41And as we look to the cross, we see these four things.
- 12:46As you look to the cross, we see the depth of man's sin.
- 12:52When we see the Savior bleeding, we see the price that my sin
- 12:57cost Him. His love matched to the depth of
- 13:01my sin. When we look to the cross, we
- 13:04see the height of God's love. Jesus left the heights of heaven
- 13:08and came down to earth to lay His life down for us.
- 13:12When we see the arms wide open on the cross of Christ, we see
- 13:18the width of our salvation arms stretched out, embracing and
- 13:23inviting the world to Himself. And finally, when we look to the
- 13:27cross, we see the length of that God will take to reach you and
- 13:34to pursue you and those that you love, because God so loves the
- 13:37world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever
- 13:41would believe in him would not perish, but have everlasting
- 13:45life. It is the blood of Jesus Christ
- 13:47that saves and cleanses and forgives.
- 13:50And that's why we choose to remember Him today.
- 13:53That's why we set a day away in the year to remember
- 13:58specifically, not exclusively friends.
- 14:02You may come from a background, a church background where it
- 14:06seems to be. That's the significance of Good
- 14:09Friday is really the only time that emphasis is placed on the
- 14:12crucifixion and burial of Christ.
- 14:15But it's something to reflect upon daily, in different angles,
- 14:19in different ways. It is an important day today for
- 14:23sure, but it's not the only day to remember.
- 14:26Jesus said to always remember as often as you do this, do this in
- 14:31remembrance of me and you have the opportunity in your own
- 14:34church family to regularly remember through communion.
- 14:38The Bible says in Acts chapter 2 and verse 42 that was something
- 14:42that made the church very, very strong was their time in God's
- 14:46Word together, their time in fellowship, which is together,
- 14:52their time in prayers, which is together, as well as their time
- 14:58taking communion together. You know, for those 12 that were
- 15:03with the Passover meal with them, they remember the first
- 15:07time communion was ever instituted.
- 15:09And so they have a very rooted memory, and they were given the
- 15:14elements of communion before the cross.
- 15:17And so we know that the bread and the cup were symbolic
- 15:21because Jesus hadn't died yet. And now we are on the other side
- 15:24of the cross. These elements are symbolic of
- 15:28the broken body. And today perhaps the Holy
- 15:31Spirit would add to your understanding.
- 15:34So not only today as we leave here in a few moments right
- 15:38before we leave, after we take community, but also each time
- 15:42you take communion, you'll have a thought of of the price that
- 15:46Jesus paid. And so let's open the top
- 15:48section together and take out that little wafer there
- 15:55representing the bread that Jesus gave to the disciples,
- 16:00representing his broken body, and it's lifted up before him.
- 16:04And I'll pray a blessing over it.
- 16:06Father, we are asking today as our minds are drawn to you both
- 16:10young and old. I pray for all the children that
- 16:13are among us today, that whatever they've heard today
- 16:17that they would receive what they understand.
- 16:20That they would truly know not only children by age, but we
- 16:23also as your children. That we would understand, that
- 16:27we would gain a depth of clarity and understanding as we live our
- 16:31life and we enjoy our life. That we would also understand
- 16:35why we have our life because of the cross.
- 16:39Because of the cross we have physical life, we have spiritual
- 16:43life. And we remember your body
- 16:45broken. Today in Jesus name, let's
- 16:47partake together. Let's open the other portion
- 16:53together and lift it up before God, and I'll pray a blessing
- 16:57over it. Today we lift the cup, God
- 17:06reminded of your blood that was shed for us to think of all the
- 17:11sins that you have forgiven, both those that we have asked
- 17:15and those that we haven't come to mind yet, or we've sinned so
- 17:18much we forgot them all. But you don't Lord, you cleanse
- 17:24and wash as a loving ABBA, our Heavenly Father.
- 17:29Your Word says for us as believers today that if we
- 17:32confess our sins, You are faithful and just to forgive us
- 17:36and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
- 17:39You promise in Your Word to those outside of the family of
- 17:42God that if they confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and
- 17:45believe in their heart that God raised him from the dead, they
- 17:48will be saved. And they're saved because of the
- 17:51cross and the shed blood in your power of your resurrection is
- 17:56what we'll celebrate tomorrow, actually a little sooner than it
- 18:01happened. But we pray that you would bless
- 18:04this cup as we receive it in remembrance of you.
- 18:07And we're thankful, Lord, we really are.
- 18:11That's probably the first thing out of our lips when we pray is
- 18:13we're so thankful and we mean it.
- 18:16And we look forward to the future that we have with you in
- 18:19the newness of life. So bless the cup in Jesus name.
- 18:23Let's partake. Let's stand together.
- 18:28Would you church those of you that are children in the room
- 18:35today? I just want to say how much and
- 18:37remind you how much God loves you, how he's put you in the
- 18:41family that you're in so that you might hear of His love.
- 18:45And no matter what age you are, if you understand what Jesus has
- 18:48done for you, you can be 5 years old today.
- 18:51You could be 4 years old today. You could be 400 and I guess you
- 18:55can't be 400. You, you could be 40 years old
- 18:58today. But especially I have a burden
- 19:00for you kiddos today, you children, 10 years old, 12 years
- 19:04old, you need to understand that God loves you and sent Jesus
- 19:08Christ to die for you and you can receive Jesus Christ as your
- 19:12savior today. You get to sit in here with us,
- 19:15with your parents, with your grandparents.
- 19:17You might even been invited by a friend today and you were
- 19:20invited by a friend today to hear about, I know it was a hard
- 19:24thing to hear about what Jesus went through for you, but He
- 19:27went through that for you so that you could live your life
- 19:29for Him forever. And so be sure to ask someone
- 19:33next to you if you have questions about Jesus or even
- 19:37those of you that are children that are a little bit older.
- 19:40We'll be up at the stage here to pray with you or to answer any
- 19:43questions you might have that you might leave here encouraged.
- 19:46And please, church, remember to pray for everyone that will be
- 19:49here this weekend as churches are going to be overflowing with
- 19:52people this weekend. It's going to be a great day for
- 19:55Team Jesus this weekend. I'll tell you, a lot of lives
- 19:58are going to be changed and a lot of great churches, a lot of
- 20:05great churches are going to be filled.
- 20:07I and men are going to preach the gospel and so we need to
- 20:11pray for these churches around town that are reaching your
- 20:14neighbors and reaching your Co workers and doing the work of
- 20:18the ministry until the soon return of Jesus.
- 20:21So Father, I pray today of all that we've heard and learned
- 20:25today a lot that it's just reminders for us.
- 20:28It's nothing we haven't heard before, most of us, but we do
- 20:32pray God for our community churches near and far, the up
- 20:38and down, this being on grace FN up and down the Front Range,
- 20:42just every real true church give the power in the unction of the
- 20:46Holy Spirit upon the pastors and the elders and the deacons and
- 20:50the deaconesses and all those that will be giving a little bit
- 20:54extra this weekend for the sake of a little bit extra, more
- 20:58people and kiddos on the property.
- 21:00And I pray for us today of everything that we received.
- 21:03And I have a special burden for all the kids here today.
- 21:06I do pray for their lives and their souls that now and today
- 21:10can be the day where their whole life turns around.
- 21:13They don't need to wait any longer.
- 21:15They can receive the Lord Jesus Christ today in this moment.
- 21:19And so I pray for them and all that will be here this weekend,
- 21:22should you tarry in Jesus name, Amen.
- 21:25Amen. We pray that you've been
- 21:28encouraged by this Bible study delivered live from the
- 21:30sanctuary of Calvary Church for prayer.
