- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on sport and state.
- 0:03Speaker 1: Glad you're with us. We're presented by Hard Rock Bet.
- 0:06Speaker 1: This is Hutton and Withrow. He's Chad Withrow. I'm Jonathan Hutton.
- 0:08Speaker 1: Plenty to get to throughout the morning as you get
- 0:13Speaker 1: ready for the weekend.
- 0:14Speaker 2: Chad, good morning to you. Good morning, Hutton.
- 0:16Speaker 3: It never gets old hearing the sweet stylings of Derek
- 0:19Speaker 3: Dooley's voice. There's something about that man's voice, his inflection,
- 0:23Speaker 3: his accent. That I will forever love. And I love
- 0:26Speaker 3: waking up to that every morning. I also love waking
- 0:28Speaker 3: up to the dark roast Crockett coffee.
- 0:30Speaker 2: There you go.
- 0:30Speaker 3: That I'm going with right now. It treats some better
- 0:33Speaker 3: than others. It treats me great.
- 0:35Speaker 2: I'll tell you that. I love it.
- 0:36Speaker 1: The dark roast also goes by King Mountain. Sounds like
- 0:41Speaker 1: a ride at Dollywood or something, you know?
- 0:43Speaker 2: Yes.
- 0:44Speaker 3: Coming this next summer. It's 2027 out here. King Mountain,
- 0:48Speaker 3: the ride at Dollywood.
- 0:49Speaker 1: We've got some great props coming up for you later
- 0:52Speaker 1: in today's show with Hard Rock Bet. Hardrock.bet.com is where
- 0:57Speaker 1: you can go through October 4th and take advantage of
- 1:00Speaker 1: the $ 5.
- 1:01Speaker 2: You bet $ 5, you get $ 100 in bonus bets.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Chad, chop on, man. Braves win. Bravos advance. And, well,
- 1:11Speaker 1: all is well with the world.
- 1:13Speaker 3: I still say that the whole playoff format, postseason format,
- 1:18Speaker 3: is broken.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:19Speaker 3: That the Braves, again, who were 26 games over. 500,
- 1:23Speaker 3: six games better than the Phillies, had to turn around
- 1:26Speaker 3: after battling the Phillies throughout the month of September in
- 1:29Speaker 3: separate four-game series to make sure they got the division championship,
- 1:33Speaker 3: won the pennant, to then have to turn around and
- 1:35Speaker 3: play the Phillies in a best-of-three is ridiculous. It should
- 1:39Speaker 3: be best-of-five. This is a game that is decided in
- 1:42Speaker 3: more games. I don't like a division champion playing a
- 1:44Speaker 3: three-game series.
- 1:45Speaker 2: But justice prevailed. in this thing. Okay.
- 1:49Speaker 3: The right winner won the game. The division champion found
- 1:52Speaker 3: a way to make it happen. Kudos to my Atlanta Braves,
- 1:56Speaker 3: Ray Kerr, who seven years ago was working at a
- 2:00Speaker 3: 7-11 and working at a movie theater who was out
- 2:04Speaker 3: of baseball completely, did not have the grades to stay
- 2:07Speaker 3: in junior college at the time, was raised in foster
- 2:10Speaker 3: homes and decided, hey, there's one guy who's going to
- 2:13Speaker 3: take a shot on me, shot on me in junior college.
- 2:16Speaker 3: I'm going to go play for him He parlays that
- 2:19Speaker 3: into going to the Alaskan Frontier League, pitches well enough
- 2:23Speaker 3: to get offered a scholarship hunting by Cumberland University in
- 2:27Speaker 3: my native Wilson County, Tennessee in Lebanon. He was about
- 2:31Speaker 3: to go to a great NAIA program, about to go
- 2:34Speaker 3: to Cumberland, gets a tryout with the Padres and the Mariners,
- 2:38Speaker 3: signs with the Mariners for a $ 2, 000 signing bonus, eventually
- 2:42Speaker 3: gets traded to the Padres. then gets traded to the Braves,
- 2:45Speaker 3: has to undergo Tommy John surgery, spends an entire year
- 2:49Speaker 3: in Florida at the Braves facility trying to recover from
- 2:52Speaker 3: Tommy John.
- 2:53Speaker 2: And fishing every day. He's an avid outdoorsman.
- 2:56Speaker 3: He found that fishing helped his elbow, helped his arm
- 3:00Speaker 3: loosen up as he was doing that every day in
- 3:03Speaker 3: the Florida swamps. And then gets his chance to start
- 3:08Speaker 3: game three, do or die playoff game. And my guy
- 3:11Speaker 3: delivered in that one. I love when he exits the
- 3:14Speaker 3: game in the fourth inning with the tip of the
- 3:16Speaker 3: cap and does the tomahawk chop on the way off
- 3:19Speaker 3: the diamond with a three nothing lead at that point.
- 3:22Speaker 3: and one out and a runner on base. Kudos to
- 3:24Speaker 3: Ray Kerr. Kudos to Chris Sale.
- 3:27Speaker 2: My goodness.
- 3:28Speaker 3: The guy on his throw day decides, hey, I feel
- 3:30Speaker 3: good enough to go, even at his age. A possible
- 3:33Speaker 3: future Hall of Famer, Chris Sale, goes out there in
- 3:36Speaker 3: an electric moment, shuts down Bryce Harper, strikes him out,
- 3:40Speaker 3: and gets an inning and a third. As the Braves
- 3:43Speaker 3: close it out and win it against Philly. Incredible night.
- 3:47Speaker 3: And again, Hutton, justice prevails. This is what should have
- 3:49Speaker 3: happened in this series.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I've been going against my gut feeling recently with Hard Rock.
- 3:56Speaker 1: So like last night, right as we signed off, I'm like,
- 3:59Speaker 1: last week I got screwed on Atlanta going to Green
- 4:02Speaker 1: Bay on Thursday. Cleveland, I'm not touching this game. And
- 4:06Speaker 1: then you sent out the story, which is crazy, about
- 4:10Speaker 1: Ray Kerr. And I'm like, I'm going to bet the Braves.
- 4:13Speaker 1: I'm going to bet the Braves just based on the
- 4:15Speaker 1: fact that we're all expecting the Phillies to go yard
- 4:23Speaker 1: with the bullpen game and take advantage of the game three.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I just went the other way just based on the
- 4:30Speaker 1: fact that my gut feeling was, hey, bet the Phillies.
- 4:34Speaker 2: And wouldn't you know it, the Braves came through.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah, look, I bet the Phillies just because I'm like,
- 4:40Speaker 3: you know, I can't have nice things as a fan.
- 4:43Speaker 2: Also, and this is what's going to happen. But great job.
- 4:47Speaker 3: And Aaron Nola had the two walks and gave up
- 4:49Speaker 3: the home run to Michael Harris in the first, which
- 4:51Speaker 3: was another electric moment on the three-run homer.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Remind me, Chad, when did the pitcher join the club?
- 5:00Speaker 2: So he's been with the team.
- 5:01Speaker 3: He got called up like mid-season, but he was coming
- 5:05Speaker 3: back from Tommy John. So he was in AAA and
- 5:07Speaker 3: then got called up. And he's been with the team
- 5:10Speaker 3: for a few months now. But, I mean, he's been
- 5:13Speaker 3: like an emergency starter before. But he's a middle relief guy.
- 5:16Speaker 3: So this was a brilliant move by Walt Weiss. The
- 5:20Speaker 3: Phillies haven't really seen him. He's got a wicked two-seam
- 5:24Speaker 3: fastball as a lefty. Let's see if he can get
- 5:27Speaker 3: us three to four innings. And he got them into
- 5:29Speaker 3: the fourth with a 3-0 lead. And that was all
- 5:32Speaker 3: she wrote. Because at that point, the Braves could go
- 5:35Speaker 3: to Grant Holmes, who was going to be the starter originally.
- 5:38Speaker 3: But they could go to him for a couple of
- 5:39Speaker 3: innings later. get him out of some jams, and they
- 5:41Speaker 3: go to Dylan Dodd, who's been really good as a
- 5:44Speaker 3: lefty out of the bullpen, and then eventually they get
- 5:47Speaker 3: to Chris Sale after a couple other guys in the bullpen.
- 5:49Speaker 3: So it was a bullpen game and a bullpen win
- 5:52Speaker 3: for the Braves in that one from a pitching standpoint.
- 5:54Speaker 1: Did you say it was the Alaskan Baseball League? I'm
- 5:57Speaker 1: Googling this right now.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Yeah, so you've got Cape Cod League, which a lot
- 6:01Speaker 3: of big-time college players go and play during the summer.
- 6:05Speaker 3: The Alaskan League, I think, is like a lot of
- 6:07Speaker 3: Division I players or big-time high school prospects play it.
- 6:11Speaker 2: From June to August. Yeah. Wood bat.
- 6:15Speaker 1: Yeah, it's exactly what you said. It's high-level competition for
- 6:18Speaker 1: NCAA college players. Founded in 1974, Palmer, Alaska, the premier
- 6:26Speaker 1: amateur collegiate summer baseball league.
- 6:29Speaker 2: And they produced a premier player.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You have the Matsu Miners, the Anchorage Bucks, Anchorage Glacier Pilots,
- 6:40Speaker 1: the Eagle River Chinooks, and the Peninsula Oilers.
- 6:45Speaker 2: They're your teams.
- 6:46Speaker 3: I think the Peninsula Oilers was the team you played on.
- 6:50Speaker 3: There's a great profile in the New York Times. The Athletic,
- 6:53Speaker 3: I guess, that's owned by the New York Times. It
- 6:55Speaker 3: always pops up differently. Every time I get one of
- 6:57Speaker 3: those stories, it goes to the New York Times page
- 7:01Speaker 3: on it.
- 7:01Speaker 2: But it's The Athletic that did it.
- 7:03Speaker 3: But anyways, great profile of Ray Kerr from earlier this
- 7:06Speaker 3: season where they interviewed him during that Dodgers series that
- 7:11Speaker 3: we watched on the way back from Birmingham where the
- 7:13Speaker 3: Braves swept the Dodgers late in the year, and they
- 7:15Speaker 3: were talking to Ray Kerr, and he was looking across
- 7:18Speaker 3: the diamond at Max Muncy, For the Dodgers, that was
- 7:21Speaker 3: his first career strikeout when he entered the game in
- 7:23Speaker 3: relief for the Padres at one point. That was 2023,
- 7:27Speaker 3: I think, was when he got his start. But it's
- 7:29Speaker 3: an incredible story. Baseball has a lot of stories like
- 7:32Speaker 3: that of guys who just bat around the minors and
- 7:34Speaker 3: make it happen.
- 7:35Speaker 1: I would say, what's the equivalent of that in the NFL?
- 7:38Speaker 1: Is it like Mark Mariani or something? He's a draft pick.
- 7:41Speaker 2: Kurt Warner. Kurt Warner, yeah.
- 7:43Speaker 3: I mean, Kurt Warner's the ultimate. Underdog story, you know,
- 7:46Speaker 3: the Arena Football League.
- 7:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's it.
- 7:48Speaker 3: Eventually gets his shit. Now, Ray Kerr's not, you know,
- 7:51Speaker 3: Super Bowl quarterback. And I don't know that he's ever
- 7:54Speaker 3: going to be a starter for the Braves.
- 7:55Speaker 2: But what a path. It was a great one-night story.
- 7:58Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 7:59Speaker 3: And a guy that hopefully can hang around and pitch
- 8:01Speaker 3: in the majors for a bunch of more years.
- 8:03Speaker 1: And what is– it's just something about baseball where I
- 8:05Speaker 1: always learn something new every single season. Like, I had
- 8:08Speaker 1: no idea this Anchorage-Alaska league was– like, Barry Bonds played
- 8:12Speaker 1: in this league. I'm looking– I'm just going through the
- 8:16Speaker 1: former players. It's just crazy. Why Alaska? I have no idea.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Well, maybe we should go at some point. Is that
- 8:23Speaker 3: just the time of year where it's daylight throughout? Like,
- 8:26Speaker 3: you know, it's dark part of the year.
- 8:28Speaker 2: All the time.
- 8:29Speaker 3: Is it daylight the entire time it could be part
- 8:31Speaker 3: of it? Brooks lets us know, and he's right. It
- 8:33Speaker 3: was the first winner-take-all series win for the Braves in
- 8:36Speaker 3: 30 years. 1996 NLCS was the last winner-take-all game. deciding
- 8:42Speaker 3: game for either team that the Braves won, and they
- 8:45Speaker 3: got it done last night.
- 8:47Speaker 2: I loved it.
- 8:48Speaker 3: We've also got people in the chat saying the NBC
- 8:51Speaker 3: broadcast and Joey Votto was terrible. I did, as it
- 8:55Speaker 3: went along, got to like John Kruk and the dynamic
- 8:59Speaker 3: with him and CJ Nikowski a lot because they had
- 9:02Speaker 3: the Braves color commentator and then Kruk. And I don't
- 9:04Speaker 3: know if you heard it, but when Grant Holmes entered
- 9:06Speaker 3: the game, who looks like Kenny Powers– The dude's got
- 9:09Speaker 3: long curly locks and a mustache.
- 9:11Speaker 2: It looks ridiculous. I am a real American.
- 9:14Speaker 3: Well, uh, Nick Kowski turns to Kruk and says, you know, Kruk, uh,
- 9:20Speaker 3: I don't, I don't want to speak for you, but
- 9:22Speaker 3: looking at his hair and mustache, he'd fit in great
- 9:24Speaker 3: with those early nineties Phillies teams with Lenny Dykstra and
- 9:29Speaker 3: Kruk as, as calm as can be goes, well, I
- 9:32Speaker 3: don't want to out anybody here, but does he like
- 9:34Speaker 3: to party? And, uh, And CJ said, you know, the
- 9:39Speaker 3: only thing that parties with him is the hair and
- 9:41Speaker 3: the mustache. He's actually a pretty straight-laced guy. And he's like, well,
- 9:44Speaker 3: I don't know that he'd fit in with us then
- 9:45Speaker 3: on those Phillies teams. Really, really funny.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Joey Votto.
- 9:48Speaker 3: I got to hit this, though. Joey Votto. So I
- 9:51Speaker 3: take my daughter to her practice. We're driving back. I've
- 9:54Speaker 3: got YouTube TV on. I've got the broadcast on my
- 9:56Speaker 3: speaker in my car. And I hear right before the Aussie.
- 10:00Speaker 3: Albies two run bomb, they go to Joey Votto and
- 10:02Speaker 3: he says, you know, I'm going to say this right now, guys,
- 10:05Speaker 3: the way Zach Wheeler's throwing right now, the Braves aren't
- 10:07Speaker 3: going to score another run this game. So the Phillies
- 10:10Speaker 3: are right there in it. This is the fifth inning.
- 10:12Speaker 3: You know, it's only a three run game. They still
- 10:14Speaker 3: got to go through Schwarber and Harper and multiple more times.
- 10:17Speaker 3: And the way Zach Wheeler's thrown, they're not going to
- 10:19Speaker 3: score another run. I mean, two batters later, it's a
- 10:22Speaker 3: two-run homer by Ozzie Albies. But I'm thinking that's a
- 10:25Speaker 3: little bit too much of a stretch in the prediction
- 10:28Speaker 3: market of a guy that's calling the game to say
- 10:31Speaker 3: that Zach Wheeler's not giving up another run this game.
- 10:35Speaker 3: That was a pretty wild prediction. I mean, that's a
- 10:39Speaker 3: four-leg parlay he just gave.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:42Speaker 3: But there was another one. I think it was Votto
- 10:46Speaker 3: again early on in game one. Or no, it may
- 10:50Speaker 3: have been Kruk, too. He's like, well, Philly's just won.
- 10:52Speaker 3: They're up 1-0 in the first. And it shows these
- 10:55Speaker 3: playoff games. The Phillies score first. They don't lose in
- 10:58Speaker 3: the playoffs, and they score first, I'm thinking. And the
- 11:00Speaker 3: Braves end up winning that game, too. But I'm like, man, that's– Boy, look,
- 11:04Speaker 3: I get doom and gloom with my teams at times.
- 11:07Speaker 3: You probably heard that yesterday with the Braves.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah. But, I mean, come on. Like, the game
- 11:11Speaker 2: just started. It's 1-0. Game's already over. That was crazy.
- 11:16Speaker 1: Chad, if Nashville gets a baseball team, will you remain
- 11:20Speaker 1: a Braves fan?
- 11:21Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 11:23Speaker 3: Yeah, there's no leaving. This blood runs Braves red and blue.
- 11:27Speaker 3: There's no leaving the team.
- 11:29Speaker 1: I'm curious about that because I grew up watching the
- 11:31Speaker 1: Braves a lot on TBS.
- 11:33Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 11:35Speaker 1: With college, I just kind of stopped watching Pete Van
- 11:38Speaker 1: Weerden and all of them. But that's the team I
- 11:41Speaker 1: would be. I watch all the time. And then I
- 11:46Speaker 1: became an Orioles fan, so there's nothing to watch.
- 11:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:49Speaker 3: Well, look, I think that I would want Nashville to
- 11:53Speaker 3: get an American League team for that very reason.
- 11:55Speaker 2: Right, right.
- 11:56Speaker 3: Because I still would be a Braves fan. I'm going
- 11:57Speaker 3: to be a fan of whoever Nashville gets also.
- 11:59Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 12:00Speaker 3: And follow them and hope that they do well.
- 12:02Speaker 2: But that's the beauty of baseball.
- 12:04Speaker 3: I mean, unless you're in the same division with that team,
- 12:08Speaker 3: you could have an American League team and a National
- 12:10Speaker 3: League team, and they're not going to cross paths– very
- 12:13Speaker 3: often in meaningful series. But if you're in the same division,
- 12:18Speaker 3: that would be a problem if, let's say, the Braves
- 12:21Speaker 3: got the Miami Marlins, you know, or the National got
- 12:24Speaker 3: the Miami Marlins to move here, then you're in the
- 12:26Speaker 3: same division with the Braves.
- 12:27Speaker 2: I wouldn't enjoy that.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Because we always assumed the Rays would be the team
- 12:31Speaker 1: to move, and that was the AL, right? So, it
- 12:35Speaker 1: makes sense, though, to have this market in the NL,
- 12:38Speaker 1: you know, just based on traveling and stuff like that, but.
- 12:41Speaker 2: I'm with you. I understand why it would be the
- 12:43Speaker 2: American League allegiance there.
- 12:46Speaker 3: The way the league works now with their scheduling formula,
- 12:49Speaker 3: everybody plays everybody. It's not as rigid about National League
- 12:53Speaker 3: and American League. You still play your division more, but
- 12:55Speaker 3: not as much as you did five years ago. It's
- 12:59Speaker 3: really just about who are you competing with for a
- 13:02Speaker 3: pennant or in positioning in your own division. Just stay
- 13:06Speaker 3: out of the NL East. That would be my advice
- 13:08Speaker 3: to the Nashville ownership group. They're not going to have
- 13:11Speaker 3: a say. But my hope is AL East. I'd love
- 13:14Speaker 3: to see Red Sox, Yankees, all those teams would be great.
- 13:18Speaker 1: Kind of like the old AFC Central division that the
- 13:21Speaker 1: Oilers slash Titans were in with Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and the
- 13:24Speaker 1: lot there. When we come back, we're discussing the SEC
- 13:28Speaker 1: dominance in regards to the television, the agreements, the media rights,
- 13:35Speaker 1: the money, the ratings. and what that means for the
- 13:38Speaker 1: Big Ten. Because the awful announcing has got a story,
- 13:41Speaker 1: I believe, detailing how they're not in panic mode, but
- 13:46Speaker 1: they are urgent about trying to figure out what to
- 13:49Speaker 1: do with their broadcast compared to what the SEC and
- 13:52Speaker 1: the ESPN is doing. We have our September Heisman list.
- 13:57Speaker 2: Coming up, Chad.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Plus, Engel Martin is going to join us. And I
- 14:00Speaker 1: want to promote this because this is going to be
- 14:02Speaker 1: a fascinating chat with him. Chad, you've got CPA, Christ
- 14:08Speaker 1: Presbyterian Academy, he's the head coach. He wrote a piece
- 14:13Speaker 1: in the Tennessean today, and it details why it's the
- 14:19Speaker 1: right move for CPA to go independent outside of the TSSAA.
- 14:25Speaker 1: I can't wait to figure this out with him, because...
- 14:29Speaker 1: He details the 99% of the players that are just
- 14:34Speaker 1: going to play high school football.
- 14:36Speaker 2: He was the 1%, you know, whenever he played.
- 14:39Speaker 1: NBA, Florida, Furman, drafted by the Packers, backed up Brett
- 14:44Speaker 1: Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Like, I'm fascinated to get his
- 14:48Speaker 1: take on exactly why this is the solution. And maybe
- 14:53Speaker 1: it's just the current solution. But it's crazy, man. This
- 14:56Speaker 1: is like college football finding high school athletics.
- 15:00Speaker 2: It is a national story.
- 15:03Speaker 3: This is a localized story in the state of Tennessee
- 15:06Speaker 3: that absolutely applies to everyone, everywhere in high school sports.
- 15:12Speaker 3: And philosophically, what's high school football? What is the purpose
- 15:16Speaker 3: of it? What are we doing with it? And I
- 15:19Speaker 3: think CPA and Engel, and I don't want to steal
- 15:22Speaker 3: words from them, we'll talk to them about it, they
- 15:24Speaker 3: just don't believe that they want to have, everybody have
- 15:26Speaker 3: an opportunity within their program, within high school football, to
- 15:30Speaker 3: have that experience, even if you're not the 1% that's
- 15:33Speaker 3: going to get a chance to go on and play
- 15:34Speaker 3: college ball, play in the NFL. But the way the
- 15:38Speaker 3: game works now, we're tailoring it more to the 1%.
- 15:42Speaker 3: And this is all about Baylor. and Macaulay and what's
- 15:45Speaker 3: happening in that region, that classification, that these schools are
- 15:49Speaker 3: angry that, you know, Baylor's bringing in a DGG from
- 15:53Speaker 3: Canada and all these players from all over the place
- 15:55Speaker 3: to play. I've always thought too, if you're someone who's
- 15:58Speaker 3: got a lot of money and you're a third, you're
- 16:00Speaker 3: a legacy Baylor student and you're sending your son to
- 16:03Speaker 3: Baylor and he never gets to play high school football,
- 16:07Speaker 3: he's just on the team because they've recruited over him
- 16:10Speaker 3: over and over again. And those players aren't, aren't paying.
- 16:13Speaker 3: to go to Baylor, their recruits that are on scholarship.
- 16:17Speaker 3: I wonder how that sits with those parents. Look, we're
- 16:20Speaker 3: going to talk to Ingle Martin about it, but again,
- 16:22Speaker 3: I don't want people to view this as some local Nashville,
- 16:26Speaker 3: state of Tennessee story. This applies to every high school
- 16:30Speaker 3: classification across the country. If these things continue to happen,
- 16:34Speaker 3: what do we want with high school football? We'll talk
- 16:36Speaker 3: to Ingle Martin about it later.
- 16:37Speaker 1: Yeah, he's coaching at a very high level for high
- 16:39Speaker 1: school football in the state. And he's played at the
- 16:43Speaker 1: highest level and been the 1% player that he mentions
- 16:47Speaker 1: in his column today at the Tennessee that he wrote.
- 16:50Speaker 1: So that's coming up in about an hour from now.
- 16:52Speaker 1: When we come back, we discuss the SEC dominance with
- 16:55Speaker 1: television ratings, the media contracts, and where it's all headed,
- 16:59Speaker 1: specifically for the Big Ten.
- 17:01Speaker 2: What do they do? That's next here on Hutton Withrow.
- 17:04Speaker 2: This year, the biggest sportsbook party is getting even bigger.

- 18:40Speaker 1: Chad, the SEC doesn't just have higher ratings. They're lapping
- 18:49Speaker 1: the Big Ten and the television deal, or any other network,
- 18:53Speaker 1: for that matter, with ESPN and what ABC's doing. When
- 18:57Speaker 1: you pointed this out, you said that like, wow. We're
- 19:01Speaker 1: doubling the spread in some of these games.
- 19:03Speaker 2: I mean, they're tripling the numbers. It's not even close. Yeah,
- 19:08Speaker 2: and look, this is a one-week snapshot. Yeah, sure. This
- 19:12Speaker 2: is a trend now. Yes. This is most of the
- 19:15Speaker 2: week so far in college football.
- 19:17Speaker 3: Texas and Tennessee, this was the most watched game in
- 19:20Speaker 3: a decade on ESPN or ABC at 11 a.m.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Central Time.
- 19:24Speaker 1: And let me point out, like the 11 a.m., that's
- 19:27Speaker 1: the big noon kickoff window, and that's the average.
- 19:31Speaker 2: That's not the peak. on the numbers, right? Yeah.
- 19:35Speaker 3: And your big noon kickoff game was Illinois and Ohio State.
- 19:40Speaker 3: This is the trend that I'm seeing more than anything else.
- 19:42Speaker 3: Look at these teams that played. Texas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Florida,
- 19:46Speaker 3: A & M, LSU. The A & M, LSU game
- 19:49Speaker 3: was a blowout. didn't think Florida-Ole Miss was going to
- 19:51Speaker 3: be much of a blowout, but Florida handled that game.
- 19:54Speaker 3: Texas-Tennessee was a great game, a three-point game that ended
- 19:57Speaker 3: with Tennessee throwing into the end zone to win the game.
- 20:00Speaker 3: Illinois-Ohio State. I mean, the league is too top-heavy. This
- 20:05Speaker 3: is the competitive issue.
- 20:06Speaker 2: Yeah, it is.
- 20:07Speaker 3: With the conference right now. Oregon-USC was fine. That was
- 20:10Speaker 3: a good matchup. That game came way closer to the
- 20:13Speaker 3: SEC than anything else.
- 20:15Speaker 2: But Iowa-Michigan, while it was a.
- 20:18Speaker 3: Good game, I mean, those two teams can be pretty
- 20:21Speaker 3: boring for television viewers at times, even though Michigan, because
- 20:25Speaker 3: of that brand, is going to bring in a lot
- 20:27Speaker 3: of eyeballs. Hutton, right now the Big Ten makes more
- 20:30Speaker 3: money than the SEC off their media rights package. The
- 20:33Speaker 3: concern for the Big Ten would be this won't last forever.
- 20:37Speaker 3: when everybody sees these numbers. And the seesaw of this
- 20:40Speaker 3: is going to swing back in favor of the SEC
- 20:43Speaker 3: whenever they sign their next deal.
- 20:44Speaker 2: Yep, yep.
- 20:45Speaker 1: And keep in mind, so they have some brands. They've
- 20:49Speaker 1: got Oregon, they've got USC, as you see here. But
- 20:51Speaker 1: when those teams travel east, they're playing earlier in the day.
- 20:56Speaker 1: And it's practically Ohio State on at big noon all
- 20:59Speaker 1: the time. Big noon kickoff doesn't really go many places
- 21:04Speaker 1: around the conference. You know, they're mainly at the shoe
- 21:09Speaker 1: for the most part. I think that's the other quality
- 21:13Speaker 1: with the SEC is all the brands. And, yes, ESPN
- 21:16Speaker 1: is going to go to the best games.
- 21:17Speaker 2: They should.
- 21:19Speaker 1: And, you know, that's normally an SEC matchup or an
- 21:22Speaker 1: SEC team. And there's a vibe to it. There's more
- 21:27Speaker 1: of a sense of a huge, massive matchup, you know.
- 21:32Speaker 2: And it's not just that. It's the depth.
- 21:36Speaker 3: Of games because Fox is a good example of this.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Okay.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Fox seems content with, we'll take a decent Friday night
- 21:44Speaker 3: game and get a good number on a Friday night
- 21:47Speaker 3: with the game. But tonight is going to be Penn
- 21:49Speaker 3: state at Northwestern. As an example, a week ago, it
- 21:52Speaker 3: was Indiana Northwestern. We'll take that decent Friday night rating.
- 21:57Speaker 3: We'll get a good rating on Saturdays on big noon.
- 22:00Speaker 3: We will just bloat our numbers with the Ohio state
- 22:04Speaker 3: Michigan game at the end of the year.
- 22:05Speaker 2: Like they always do.
- 22:06Speaker 3: That's going to do so well that it's going to
- 22:07Speaker 3: make the whole package look better than it actually is.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Because then when you get Ohio State-Michigan, you also get
- 22:12Speaker 3: Illinois-Ohio State, which is a blowout. The big loser in
- 22:16Speaker 3: this is CBS, who had the prime slot for SEC games.
- 22:21Speaker 3: When you heard that music strike up, you knew this
- 22:23Speaker 3: is the game of the week in the SEC. And instead,
- 22:26Speaker 3: now they've got a collection of terrible games at 230.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Now, this is the test, Hutton. This is a test.
- 22:33Speaker 3: They do not have a terrible game this week. The
- 22:35Speaker 3: 230 CBS Big Ten game is Iowa-Ohio State. This is
- 22:39Speaker 3: the ESPN College Game Day game. This is the game
- 22:43Speaker 3: of the week, okay? How does that game perform against Florida-Missouri?
- 22:48Speaker 3: Another top 25 matchup. That's their competition on ABC.
- 22:51Speaker 2: At that time.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I think Ohio State-Iowa will do better. Maybe far better
- 22:56Speaker 3: than that game. But if it's even close between those two...
- 23:00Speaker 3: then you're starting.
- 23:01Speaker 2: To see an issue because that's.
- 23:03Speaker 3: A premier game for the conference. And it's a 14-point spread, right?
- 23:09Speaker 3: I mean, that's another thing.
- 23:10Speaker 2: 14 and a half.
- 23:10Speaker 1: Yeah, it's this game close is another factor in this. Chad,
- 23:16Speaker 1: and here's to that point. Coming up October 17th, the
- 23:21Speaker 1: matchups that day is insane. Florida and Texas, Auburn and Georgia.
- 23:28Speaker 1: You have, let's see, Alabama-Tennessee is that day, I believe.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Missouri and Ole Miss. Mississippi State-LSU. I mean, you keep
- 23:38Speaker 1: on going. Oklahoma plays Kentucky. Meanwhile, you have Notre Dame-BYU.
- 23:45Speaker 1: Florida State-Miami is that day as well. It's going to
- 23:47Speaker 1: be an incredible day in football. But I'm looking, like,
- 23:51Speaker 1: Oregon plays Nebraska. The depth is really.
- 23:55Speaker 3: You've got Ohio State-Michigan that day, which is huge. So
- 23:59Speaker 3: Ohio State– I'm looking at the comparison. Ohio State at
- 24:02Speaker 3: Michigan is going to be gigantic. So the Big Ten
- 24:04Speaker 3: will have maybe the biggest game of the day on
- 24:07Speaker 3: that one. Again, it's the depth of it. Penn State-Michigan's fine.
- 24:12Speaker 3: But then you get Rutgers-Maryland, Northwestern-Michigan State, Wisconsin-UCLA. You get
- 24:18Speaker 3: a collection of other games that just don't really matter.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Their Friday night game that week is Washington-Purdue. Washington at Purdue.
- 24:24Speaker 3: It's just– It's the depth. It's the quality depth of
- 24:28Speaker 3: the SEC that I keep going back to that Big
- 24:30Speaker 3: Ten people freaking hate hearing about.
- 24:33Speaker 2: But it's true.
- 24:34Speaker 3: There's just so many more matchups that matter in that conference.
- 24:38Speaker 3: Here's also what matters.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Geography.
- 24:41Speaker 3: In the SEC, everything makes sense because every SEC state
- 24:46Speaker 3: touches another SEC state. When I see Washington-Purdue on a
- 24:50Speaker 3: Friday night, I want to induce vomiting.
- 24:54Speaker 2: Thinking about watching that game.
- 24:55Speaker 3: I am so happy that on that weekend, we will
- 24:58Speaker 3: actually be in Knoxville getting ready for Tennessee and Alabama.
- 25:02Speaker 3: The other problem is I do want to watch Oregon
- 25:05Speaker 3: and Ohio State or Oregon-Indiana, but they don't play every year.
- 25:10Speaker 1: It just depends on the schedule. There's too many teams
- 25:13Speaker 1: to make the schedule work out that way. It's so
- 25:17Speaker 1: lopsided one way or the other where you don't really
- 25:19Speaker 1: know year to year if you're going to get these
- 25:21Speaker 1: big matchups. That's the other problem with the conference. I
- 25:24Speaker 1: don't know how you combat it, really. I mean, I
- 25:26Speaker 1: know that the column was on, like, the strategy behind
- 25:30Speaker 1: what to do in noticing this trend. I don't know
- 25:32Speaker 1: how you stop it.
- 25:35Speaker 2: You don't.
- 25:36Speaker 3: I mean, there's nothing you can do other than, you know,
- 25:39Speaker 3: tell Illinois and Northwestern to be nationally relevant.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah, you're right. They need a Greg Sankey speech for basketball.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Yeah, but I mean, I don't know what Rutgers, Maryland, Purdue–
- 25:54Speaker 3: Washington could, I guess, theoretically. UCLA, maybe they found a
- 25:58Speaker 3: coach now, and they're going to be nationally relevant and
- 26:01Speaker 3: help out. But, I mean, look, in these conferences, everybody
- 26:04Speaker 3: can't be good. In the SEC, everyone's not good. It's
- 26:09Speaker 3: just you get so many teams that people care about
- 26:13Speaker 3: that are compelling, and it's top to bottom.
- 26:17Speaker 2: It's way better in the SEC.
- 26:19Speaker 3: I like that awful announcing point of this out because–
- 26:22Speaker 3: there's always this immediate backlash to anyone that wants to
- 26:27Speaker 3: prop up the SEC.
- 26:28Speaker 2: Right. And I get it.
- 26:29Speaker 3: There's a lot of SEC propagandists out there when it
- 26:32Speaker 3: comes to these things, and they want to fight against that. But, look,
- 26:36Speaker 3: just reality is reality in terms of what people want
- 26:39Speaker 3: to watch. And people want to watch the SEC more
- 26:42Speaker 3: than the Big Ten right now, even though the Big
- 26:44Speaker 3: Ten's been winning the national titles.
- 26:45Speaker 1: Well, and, you know, you see the ranking next to
- 26:49Speaker 1: the names. You know, the games– are important. There's a
- 26:55Speaker 1: lot at stake. They built it up where there is
- 27:01Speaker 1: something on the line every week is what you feel like.
- 27:05Speaker 3: That is where I'll cry foul if I'm the other
- 27:07Speaker 3: conferences is the ranking system is ridiculous. In terms of
- 27:11Speaker 3: how we start in the preseason and everybody's going to
- 27:14Speaker 3: vote for the SEC teams because that's the most coverage
- 27:17Speaker 3: and that's what we know more about.
- 27:18Speaker 2: There should be more movement than what we see. And
- 27:22Speaker 2: you can start it wherever you want.
- 27:23Speaker 1: But as the season really gets going, you have to
- 27:27Speaker 1: move teams around. Clay gets a lot of feedback for that.
- 27:31Speaker 1: But that's the way he goes about it. But see,
- 27:35Speaker 1: I don't think the voters, Chad, are watching a lot
- 27:37Speaker 1: of these games. Because a lot of them cover a team.
- 27:41Speaker 1: And if they're at a game, that is their day.
- 27:44Speaker 1: Is covering that team and that beat. Meanwhile, Clay's watching
- 27:49Speaker 1: all the games. We're watching games. There's a lot of
- 27:51Speaker 1: people that sit around and watch games in the media
- 27:53Speaker 1: that aren't voting. I think that's another issue because you
- 27:56Speaker 1: don't really move teams around if you don't watch the games.
- 27:59Speaker 1: You just see a one-point loss or a two-point loss,
- 28:01Speaker 1: so to speak.
- 28:03Speaker 3: I am not for an AI computer algorithm takeover in
- 28:06Speaker 3: most aspects of life.
- 28:08Speaker 2: But you know where I am for it? AP polls.
- 28:11Speaker 2: I don't want humans to be involved in it.
- 28:13Speaker 3: But for the reason you're saying, there's no possible way
- 28:16Speaker 3: you could see every team and know about every single
- 28:19Speaker 3: team if you're covering one team. So there has to be,
- 28:23Speaker 3: just like the old BCS, there is a computer model
- 28:26Speaker 3: algorithm of strength of schedule mixed with offensive, defensive, special
- 28:31Speaker 3: teams performance mixed with recruiting rankings. and star players, and
- 28:36Speaker 3: NFL draft prospects. You could blend all these together. I
- 28:40Speaker 3: guarantee you someone in Stanford right now has that model,
- 28:44Speaker 3: and we could more properly rank 1 through 25 so
- 28:47Speaker 3: we could stop everyone else from bitching about it because
- 28:50Speaker 3: of SEC bias.
- 28:51Speaker 1: I think for the most part it would be pretty accurate,
- 28:56Speaker 1: but the problem is someone would tinker with the qualified
- 29:00Speaker 1: players aspects of what goes into this algorithm.
- 29:02Speaker 2: To produce your top 25.
- 29:04Speaker 1: You know, there's always different additions, subtractions, what the focus
- 29:07Speaker 1: is now versus over here, strength of schedule, all that.
- 29:11Speaker 1: Like there's too much of a gray area with what, like,
- 29:16Speaker 1: I don't know if the average fan can really dive
- 29:19Speaker 1: in to what the college football playoff committee is looking at,
- 29:23Speaker 1: you know, whenever they're, I think we view it way
- 29:25Speaker 1: different than what's in front of them with what they're
- 29:27Speaker 1: told to view.
- 29:28Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 29:28Speaker 1: It's just, it's, there's a lot that we don't realize
- 29:33Speaker 1: that are within the guidelines of what they're supposed to do,
- 29:36Speaker 1: I guess. And then at the committee too, like at like... teachers,
- 29:40Speaker 1: professors on this?
- 29:42Speaker 2: Yeah, I just don't want to hear about SEC bias anymore.
- 29:45Speaker 3: So just let a computer decide. The computer's not biased.
- 29:48Speaker 3: AI won't be biased with it. Have an algorithm in
- 29:52Speaker 3: place that here are the factors. Everybody can see what
- 29:54Speaker 3: they are. You put all the teams in that system,
- 29:57Speaker 3: and then you spit out a top 25. I don't
- 30:00Speaker 3: like preseason polls, but even if you want to do
- 30:02Speaker 3: it in the preseason, hey, here's who's returning. Here's who left.
- 30:06Speaker 3: Here's who they got in the transfer portal. We're going
- 30:08Speaker 3: to take their stats and what they did at their
- 30:09Speaker 3: previous school. We're going to apply it to the new school.
- 30:12Speaker 3: We're going to put all this into one system. and
- 30:15Speaker 3: we're going to spit out a new top 25, I
- 30:18Speaker 3: think that would.
- 30:19Speaker 2: Solve a lot of this.
- 30:20Speaker 3: I don't want that picking the playoff teams, but in
- 30:24Speaker 3: terms of a running meter of where teams are ranked,
- 30:27Speaker 3: and hell, don't stop it there. I want to see
- 30:29Speaker 3: if Vanderbilt is ranked 33rd or 45th nationally. Go through
- 30:34Speaker 3: the entire FBS. Show me where Central Michigan's ranked in
- 30:39Speaker 3: the FBS. I'd like to see one through the very
- 30:41Speaker 3: end of college football and where teams rank.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Would this algorithm, though, Chad, realize that Michigan screwed over?
- 30:51Speaker 1: They got the extra second they shouldn't have. Because I
- 30:56Speaker 1: think the voter would know.
- 30:59Speaker 3: But yes, I think, of course, you would factor in
- 31:02Speaker 3: all those different things.
- 31:02Speaker 2: Penalties.
- 31:03Speaker 3: Look, you could get this computer and algorithm to do
- 31:07Speaker 3: anything that you wanted.
- 31:08Speaker 2: And what about my idea? What if everybody had a
- 31:10Speaker 2: number next to them?
- 31:11Speaker 3: What if instead of unranked versus 17th Auburn versus Tennessee,
- 31:15Speaker 3: it was 29 versus.
- 31:17Speaker 2: 17 this week is what appeared on the screen.
- 31:19Speaker 3: Everyone's got a ranking next to them, one through 122
- 31:23Speaker 3: or however many teams.
- 31:24Speaker 2: Are in FBS right now. I think that'd be pretty cool.
- 31:26Speaker 2: There would be a huge gap in the Big Ten.
- 31:28Speaker 2: I know that. In their week-to-week matchups. Purdue would be
- 31:33Speaker 2: pretty far down there.
- 31:35Speaker 1: Coming up, we discuss the September Heisman. We've got our
- 31:40Speaker 1: Heisman list and we'll also discuss coach of the first
- 31:45Speaker 1: month of the college football season straight ahead here on

- 33:10Speaker 1: on the first month of the college football season, where
- 33:13Speaker 1: we would be placing votes for our, for Heisman. If
- 33:16Speaker 1: we had one, uh, the September Heisman with honey with
- 33:19Speaker 1: row has arrived. And, uh, Chad, I, I don't think
- 33:23Speaker 1: there's a big debate here based on the result of
- 33:26Speaker 1: last week, uh, with, uh, what happened with Ole Miss
- 33:30Speaker 1: after the big win. Um, We've got our Heisman list
- 33:34Speaker 1: with Kamario Taylor. I mean, he's the best quarterback right
- 33:38Speaker 1: now in college football, completing like 70% of his passes,
- 33:44Speaker 1: over 1,100 passing yards so far, 14 touchdowns, only two interceptions,
- 33:49Speaker 1: and Mississippi State is going into a big game against
- 33:54Speaker 1: Alabama where if they get this one, everybody's going to
- 33:59Speaker 1: be on board with this dude.
- 34:01Speaker 3: Yeah, and what is a ranking without recency bias? And
- 34:04Speaker 3: certainly there is some recency bias here. If we did
- 34:06Speaker 3: this two weeks ago after that performance against LSU in
- 34:09Speaker 3: the National Spotlight, we'd probably have Trinidad Chambliss at No. 1. No.
- 34:13Speaker 3: 1 in the arch would be there based on the comeback. Yep,
- 34:17Speaker 3: and then he goes to Florida, and he doesn't look
- 34:20Speaker 3: quite as good. And Kamara Taylor's coming off a great performance, 360,
- 34:22Speaker 3: three touchdowns in that win over Missouri this past week.
- 34:27Speaker 2: So we're going Kamario Taylor this week. Look, this is
- 34:29Speaker 2: going to change.
- 34:29Speaker 3: We're going to do this each month. We'll have a
- 34:30Speaker 3: September Heisman. We'll have an October Heisman. Then by the
- 34:33Speaker 3: end of November, we'll grant our Heisman Trophy vote and
- 34:36Speaker 3: show you what we'd go with for the entire season.
- 34:38Speaker 3: But right now, Kamario Taylor, who's going to get a
- 34:41Speaker 3: gigantic test this upcoming weekend against Alabama, I don't think
- 34:47Speaker 3: it's a lot of controversy in saying that he's the
- 34:49Speaker 3: guy with what he's done statistically and how he can
- 34:52Speaker 3: do it with his arm or his legs.
- 34:54Speaker 2: Now, legitimately.
- 34:57Speaker 1: Jeremiah Smith can win the award as a non-quarterback. I mean,
- 35:01Speaker 1: he already owns Ohio State's career receiving yardage record. But,
- 35:04Speaker 1: I mean, he's got, what, 12 passes, four touchdowns in
- 35:09Speaker 1: last week's game. The dude's unstoppable. It's just another Ohio
- 35:12Speaker 1: State wide receiver that is dominant. And he was the
- 35:15Speaker 1: chosen one, you know? Like, he's put up there. Trinidad
- 35:19Speaker 1: Chambliss has been very good. But then there's Mensah, right?
- 35:24Speaker 1: That's one to watch, man. Miami hasn't really played to
- 35:30Speaker 1: the talent level for evaluating who they are, where they are.
- 35:35Speaker 1: I will say this week is probably a start to that.
- 35:38Speaker 1: But he could catch fire, too, and put up some
- 35:41Speaker 1: big numbers based on competition.
- 35:43Speaker 3: Miami's best win so far is Wake Forest. And they
- 35:46Speaker 3: beat them by 13 at the time. We thought, boy,
- 35:48Speaker 3: that wasn't a great performance by Miami. But then Wake
- 35:50Speaker 3: Forest goes to Louisville. and wins and looks way better.
- 35:54Speaker 3: So look, Miami is going to get tested. I think
- 35:58Speaker 3: in this game at Clemson, we'll talk about top 10
- 36:00Speaker 3: games coming up and where that ranks.
- 36:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 36:02Speaker 3: But it's just, it's so hard to evaluate the ACC
- 36:08Speaker 3: right now, because it does feel like it's Miami, big
- 36:10Speaker 3: drop off everybody else. And Miami is just playing a
- 36:14Speaker 3: bunch of exhibition games up until they get to the
- 36:17Speaker 3: college football playoff, which feels inevitable at this point. And
- 36:20Speaker 3: when you're paying a quarterback, the way they paid a
- 36:22Speaker 3: quarterback a year ago with Carson Beck, now with Darian
- 36:26Speaker 3: Mensah to bring in that big transfer, this is the
- 36:30Speaker 3: expectation at Miami now with what they're spending in the portal,
- 36:33Speaker 3: and Darian Mensah is delivering on those expectations. The guy
- 36:38Speaker 3: that I'm fascinated with is Jaden Ball. That's the one
- 36:42Speaker 3: that for a running back to be in this one,
- 36:45Speaker 3: I think he's got a chance to do it the
- 36:46Speaker 3: way Buster Faulkner and that Florida offense, the way they
- 36:49Speaker 3: run the football.
- 36:51Speaker 2: He leads the nation in.
- 36:52Speaker 1: Touchdowns, 11 already, 600 yards rushing, 142 against Ole Miss. Look, Florida, though,
- 37:03Speaker 1: I don't know. I'm not buying in completely on them yet.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I feel like if you can find a defense that
- 37:10Speaker 1: stops the run, you're going to beat them. Maybe just
- 37:14Speaker 1: control the run game would be a better way to
- 37:16Speaker 1: phrase that.
- 37:17Speaker 2: But no one stopped him yet. You're right.
- 37:19Speaker 1: He's deserving of being mentioned here. He would be in
- 37:21Speaker 1: New York on my vote, for sure. And then there's
- 37:26Speaker 1: our coach, our top coaches. Now, I'm on board with
- 37:30Speaker 1: Summerall at number one. What he has delivered to that
- 37:34Speaker 1: program is the energy they have lacked for seasons. And
- 37:40Speaker 1: that is for real. They're on board with him. He's
- 37:43Speaker 1: all in. He's the coach that's got the chip on
- 37:46Speaker 1: his shoulder that can deliver results. Well done to him.
- 37:52Speaker 1: And then Golding winning the matchup over Kiffin. How can
- 37:55Speaker 1: you not automatically think of him there?
- 37:58Speaker 3: Yeah, he's one that kind of feels like the tug-at-the-heartstrings
- 38:03Speaker 3: one for beating Kiffin because most of America hates Lane Kiffin,
- 38:06Speaker 3: hates LSU and what they've done now. especially with trying
- 38:09Speaker 3: to bring in the NFL guys. But I love Golding. Golding,
- 38:14Speaker 3: to me, seems like that dude that most every program
- 38:17Speaker 3: wants that's just all about ball, and he's a good
- 38:20Speaker 3: relationship builder also. He can kind of block out the
- 38:23Speaker 3: noise and not be about all that stuff too.
- 38:26Speaker 2: So, yeah, Golding's definitely going to be out there. How
- 38:28Speaker 2: about Kirk Ferentz? Yeah.
- 38:30Speaker 3: I mean, you want to talk about the model of
- 38:32Speaker 3: consistency as a head coach and how long he's been
- 38:34Speaker 3: in the program. I'm looking at guys now, and I'm
- 38:36Speaker 3: thinking you stay one place– six to eight years, and
- 38:40Speaker 3: that's an eternity, and things start to wear thin at places,
- 38:44Speaker 3: and other programs in your conference catch up to you,
- 38:47Speaker 3: and you better be able to adapt, and then it's
- 38:49Speaker 3: hard to sustain things over that period of time, and
- 38:52Speaker 3: you look at Kirk Ferentz, who took over, I think,
- 38:55Speaker 3: in 1999 as the head coach at Iowa, a remarkable
- 38:58Speaker 3: run for him.
- 38:59Speaker 1: Yeah, man, Will Stein's deserving, so well done, Jeff Levy,
- 39:03Speaker 1: you know, like that's the that's the surprise. Kentucky's been a,
- 39:08Speaker 1: been a surprise, uh, with just the new coaches, the
- 39:11Speaker 1: new coaches, Chad, that jump out to me on this list.
- 39:15Speaker 2: That's, that's the surprise to this point.
- 39:18Speaker 1: Um, and I mean, the team we're not talking about
- 39:21Speaker 1: is Georgia. We never mentioned Georgia in our discussions. Uh,
- 39:25Speaker 1: I bring that up because Kirby smart, still Kirby Smarty
- 39:29Speaker 1: um I've got a feeling man that he he's not
- 39:31Speaker 1: going to forget the Jared Curtis stuff they're out for
- 39:33Speaker 1: blood this week what do you do you agree yes
- 39:37Speaker 1: and uh I I need to go check the distinction
- 39:40Speaker 1: I don't know what the injury distinction is for Curtis
- 39:42Speaker 1: if that's changed from questionable from Wednesdays to Thursdays.
- 39:46Speaker 2: So we'll go look that up. Okay, yeah.
- 39:47Speaker 3: And see if he still lists as questionable. But, I mean,
- 39:49Speaker 3: at this point, he was questionable. I don't even know
- 39:51Speaker 3: if he's playing in this game against Georgia, which may
- 39:53Speaker 3: be a savior for Jared Curtis going into Athens and
- 39:57Speaker 3: playing this game. Hey, shout out to a guy's name
- 40:00Speaker 3: that I don't even know how to pronounce.
- 40:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 40:02Speaker 3: But if we're looking for a group of five candidate
- 40:05Speaker 3: to be in this top five coaches of September, how
- 40:08Speaker 3: about Joe Harasmiak of UMass?
- 40:12Speaker 2: As I like to pronounce it.
- 40:14Speaker 3: UMass is 4-0, and they were predicted to be maybe
- 40:17Speaker 3: the worst team in FBS. They go to Rutgers and
- 40:20Speaker 3: win easily on that opening night of college football on
- 40:23Speaker 3: the Thursday, and now here they are at 4-0 on
- 40:27Speaker 3: the season. Pretty incredible. They're in the MAAC, and yeah,
- 40:33Speaker 3: they have won. Rutgers 37-21, and since then they have
- 40:37Speaker 3: beaten three nobodies, but still. They're beating them easily, and
- 40:41Speaker 3: they're 4-0. So Joe Harasmiak, who I know was a
- 40:45Speaker 3: Greg Sciano. You can get the word ass in that one. Harasmiak.
- 40:51Speaker 3: That's how I'm pronouncing it. I don't even know if
- 40:52Speaker 3: that's right. But he coached for Greg Sciano at Rutgers, too,
- 40:55Speaker 3: which makes it all the more crazy that they went
- 40:57Speaker 3: to Rutgers and won.
- 40:59Speaker 1: So, Clark, I'm looking up the injury report. Here's Clark
- 41:03Speaker 1: Lee's quote after yesterday's practice.
- 41:06Speaker 2: I'm hopeful.
- 41:08Speaker 1: I think every day he's felt a little better. He's
- 41:10Speaker 1: done a little more in practice, so certainly not ruling
- 41:12Speaker 1: him out. Hopefully the next 48 hours we see improvement
- 41:15Speaker 1: where he feels comfortable to go out there and play,
- 41:17Speaker 1: but he's our starting quarterback.
- 41:19Speaker 2: I mean, I take that as he's starting.
- 41:26Speaker 3: Brooks Carter, who does a lot of research and graphics
- 41:28Speaker 3: for us, He's in the YouTube chat right now. He
- 41:31Speaker 3: informs us Yamass came into the season on a 16-game
- 41:35Speaker 3: losing streak, which makes it even crazier. They're 4-0 right now.
- 41:38Speaker 3: And what I've asked Brooks to tell me is if
- 41:41Speaker 3: I'm pronouncing the name right.
- 41:43Speaker 2: It's somebody. Help me. Help me if it's Harassmiak, Harassimiak.
- 41:49Speaker 2: Where is the.
- 41:49Speaker 3: Emphasis in this name? Country of origin. If we're doing
- 41:53Speaker 3: a spelling bee, I'd like to know that too. It's
- 41:58Speaker 3: spelled H-R-A-S-Y-M-I-A-K.
- 42:02Speaker 2: Hey, man. I'm saying Harassmiak. Is it Harassimiak? I don't know.
- 42:06Speaker 2: He just probably goes by Joey H to his friends.
- 42:11Speaker 1: If this were Auburn, they would make it very clear
- 42:14Speaker 1: how to pronounce this dude's name because Auburn's got the
- 42:18Speaker 1: punter last name Cock, and it's spelled K-A-A-K.
- 42:23Speaker 2: They wanted everyone to know.
- 42:25Speaker 1: That it was, in fact, yes, pronounced exactly the way
- 42:29Speaker 1: that you would say it for Gamecocks or anything else
- 42:32Speaker 1: you wanted to throw in there. Mike Keith, a good
- 42:35Speaker 1: friend of ours, Chad, mentored to many and to me.
- 42:39Speaker 1: I was joking with him about this. If this guy
- 42:44Speaker 1: comes on to punt, he will mention something that will
- 42:49Speaker 1: be funny.
- 42:49Speaker 2: Yes, this is Cocktober. Also here with us.
- 42:54Speaker 3: It's going to be a big month for Hudson. JT
- 42:58Speaker 3: in the chat says, UMass, hashtag not ass. And Mark says,
- 43:04Speaker 3: UMass versus IS. That would be a good game. Hey,
- 43:07Speaker 3: Titans versus UMass right now is one that I might watch. UMass,
- 43:12Speaker 3: we've talked about this before. It's a program I never
- 43:14Speaker 3: think about, ever. Programs, especially some that have had some success,
- 43:19Speaker 3: like John Calipari. UMass teams with Marcus Camby and others
- 43:24Speaker 3: that went to a Final Four. I'm pretty sure Dr.
- 43:27Speaker 3: J played at UMass also, so he's a UMass grad,
- 43:30Speaker 3: but that's just not a program that I often think
- 43:33Speaker 3: about being in the middle of nowhere in Massachusetts. So
- 43:37Speaker 3: UMass football, I don't know how many UMass fans there are,
- 43:41Speaker 3: but if you're a fan of UMass, then you're happy
- 43:44Speaker 3: right now with your start.
- 43:46Speaker 2: Hey, quick break, and then we have... Oh, we actually...
- 43:52Speaker 2: What time is Eagle coming on officially? He's coming on.
- 43:55Speaker 2: We've got college football top ten games coming up. Okay.
- 43:58Speaker 2: That's what I've got. I left that out of my rundown.
- 44:00Speaker 2: It's my bad.
- 44:02Speaker 1: We have that plus Profit Like It's Hot a little
- 44:04Speaker 1: bit later. Chad, I think you're going to like mine.
- 44:07Speaker 1: I think you're going to be all aboard to rake
- 44:11Speaker 1: it in this weekend. We have the top ten college
- 44:13Speaker 1: football games of the week in courtesy of Chad Withrow.
- 44:15Speaker 1: Straight ahead here on How to Do Withrow.
