- 0:07Joe Tolleson back at Phillips Arena as we continue with the NHL Radio pre-game show.
- 0:15And while the captains have been chosen for this NHL All-Star game, it's time to hear from them now.
- 0:20Our first stop is with the Western Conference and that's where we find our Bill Clement.
- 0:24Alright Joe, thanks very much. Here in the Western Conference locker room with the Western captain, Jerome McGillin.
- 0:29He's got a lot of activity because he's actually getting his sticks ready to go.
- 0:32Your impressions on how Atlanta is prepared for this?
- 0:35And go ahead and do what you've got to do, man.
- 0:37But your impressions on how Atlanta is prepared for this All-Star event?
- 0:40I think it's been great. We haven't played back here in like five years as a team.
- 0:44We're out west in Calgary and to see the support on the red carpet there with all the people and the kids,
- 0:55the jerseys and everything and then going yesterday during the skills competition,
- 0:59the energy in the building, the fans were on top of it, they were cheering, they were booing, they were into it.
- 1:04So it's been great.
- 1:06They were booing the judges in the breakaway competition and I was one of them so I know all about that.
- 1:11Listen, some players or at least some people have suggested that to some players this is a burden coming to the All-Star game.
- 1:19What's your feelings on the break and coming to an All-Star weekend?
- 1:23No, I mean I think it's definitely always an honour and you get here, it's a lot of fun.
- 1:30It's a great chance to meet other players around the league and play with them.
- 1:35And looking back, I've had great memories on all three of them and this is my fourth and I'm very thankful for each opportunity.
- 1:43And you know, just another weekend off, I look back, there's lots of those.
- 1:49There's only so many All-Star games and so I think it's great and guys here seem to be really enjoying it.
- 1:56And ones I've been to, we always have a lot of fun and look forward to doing it again.
- 2:01You have been a philanthropist in your career.
- 2:04By some totals you're over $400,000 that you've donated to charity and this game will be no exception.
- 2:10Can you tell us a little bit about the charity?
- 2:12The charity is KidSport in Canada and in Calgary. KidSport is an organisation that assists families,
- 2:20kids that want to be involved in sports and can assist with the costs if they need help to be involved in whatever the sport may be.
- 2:27Bowling, tennis, hockey, with different costs that come up because sports are expensive.
- 2:33And I look back and I'm very thankful for the opportunity I had to be involved in it, not only to make the NHL,
- 2:39but some of my best friends are guys I played novice hockey at age 9 or 8 with and baseball with at age 10 and stuff.
- 2:46So I'm very thankful for those opportunities and it's a wonderful programme that helps kids be a part of sport.
- 2:53So what has to happen in this 56th All-Star game for you to contribute to charity? How does the money get handed over?
- 2:59Well it was kind of a two, the reason why it was like two things was for a wonderful cause and for the charity.
- 3:07And then the other was I feel it's kind of old back with interest. I haven't scored in any of the previous three games.
- 3:12So how much goes if you score?
- 3:14So I raised it. I raised it from the season that it goes 5,000 and it had to set a minimum because I'm hoping that there's a,
- 3:23you know, would love to get one or I'm getting heat from Dion Faneuf. He's scored one already and I haven't had any, got one in one game.
- 3:31So a minimum of 5,000, 5,000 a goal.
- 3:34I did hear some place that there was going to be 5,000 even if it gets shut out. Is that the case?
- 3:39Yeah, yeah, minimum, yeah, totally, minimum because I think four tries or whatever if that's the case it's time for me to at least be putting something out.
- 3:48But hopefully that's not the case but either way it's a great night and it's a lot of fun and hopefully some money and awareness for kids' sport.
- 3:59It would be nice if Mike Babcock gave you somebody good to play with. I looked at the lineup and it's only Pavel Dotsuk and Rick Nash.
- 4:05Yeah, that's, that's, I definitely don't have any excuses and I haven't had any in the last three All-Star games. It's one of those things and, you know,
- 4:13to play with Pav and watch his, the way he moves the puck and Rick Nash's speed and it's going to be a lot of fun.
- 4:21Jerome, thanks for taking time with us and good luck tonight.
- 4:23Thanks a lot for having me, Bill.
- 4:24That's Jerome McGinley, the captain of the Western Conference All-Stars. Now we'll head over to the Eastern locker room where Sam Rosen is standing by with the Eastern captain Vinny LeCavillier.
- 4:32Thanks very much, Bill. Vinny, here we are at the All-Star game, your third. How does it feel being around the guys in this relaxed atmosphere?
- 4:41It feels great. I mean, a lot of good guys and some new guys I've never, I've never met so a lot of fun. I love the experience every time and, you know,
- 4:51so obviously it's always in different cities and so it's always a good time.
- 4:54Now I saw you on the ice last night chatting a lot with Jerome McGinley that go back to your Olympic days as well or before that?
- 5:02More the Olympic days, you know, we got to know each other. He's a great guy and everybody likes him. He's a guy that is an honest guy,
- 5:11very friendly guy and on the icy battles so people respect him a lot.
- 5:16All right, the All-Star game, we know guys are here to have fun, relaxed atmosphere. Can the game be competitive?
- 5:23I think so. I think last year, you know, we had a talk before the game saying, you know what, we got to give a good show, we got to work hard
- 5:31and I thought it was a great game. I thought guys were back checking a little bit more than the previous years and, you know, I think it just makes the game more exciting.
- 5:39How about being the captain for this game?
- 5:42It's great. I mean, I think it's more symbolic than, you know, I'm not going to throw some stuff around in the locker room if we're losing,
- 5:50but it's more symbolic and it's a great honor.
- 5:53Now you start the game with Daniel Alpherson on your right wing. He scored seven points the other night and he grabbed the lead, the scoring lead from you.
- 6:00How do you feel about that?
- 6:01I don't know, seven points. I mean, that's pretty incredible. So it's too bad it was against us and we had to lose, but, you know, he's a great player
- 6:10and it's going to be my, you know, it's a great honor to play with him.
- 6:13How about the season you're having? Tell us about individually what's going on with you, but what about the Lightning struggling a little bit?
- 6:20Yeah, it's going all right. I mean, I think we've won three of our last four games and we're playing a lot better.
- 6:28You know, obviously we're still right there. I mean, that's the beauty of it and we got 30 games to make up for it.
- 6:35You know, we want to have a good start, a fresh start here after the All-Star game and make sure we finish strong and, you know, we believe we can do it.
- 6:43The pressure on you to get points virtually every night for you to put points on the board?
- 6:48Well, I mean, I'm paid to produce. I mean, I'm there to produce and help the team as much as I can and I'm going to do my best.
- 6:58And, you know, like I said, the last three games are very important, so I'll make sure that, you know, not just myself, but everybody's ready to play every single night.
- 7:07You saw the talent on the ice last night in the skills competition. You see the talent in the locker room here.
- 7:12What are your thoughts about what it means for the NHL?
- 7:15It's great. I think the best thing is guys are young. I think it's a really, you look at guys like Ovechkin who's 21 or 22 years old.
- 7:22Crosby who's not here, but a lot of good young players. I think that's just going to make the league a lot better in the next 10, 15 years.
- 7:32And what about your role as a representative of the NHL? As a little bit older star?
- 7:37I mean, I still feel young, but I guess I am a little bit old and I don't know, I'll just, you know, keep going and try to represent, you know, as good as I can.
- 7:49Will you shoot out there today or pass the puck today? A little bit of both. Great to see you, Vinny. Good luck. Thank you.
- 7:55All right. That's the captain of the Eastern All-Stars, Vinny LeCavillier of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Back to you, Joe.
- 8:01Thanks very much, Sam. Right now, the Hives entertaining the fans at the Phillips Arena. Next, we meet the All-Stars from Westwood 1. This is NHL Radio.

- 21:18Reason number 13 to switch to GEICO. Everybody else is doing it. Now we know that logic never won an argument with your mom, especially when you were lobbying for that BB gun. You could put an eye out or something.
- 21:28But when it comes to car insurance, joining the crowd could be a good thing. Last year, more than 3 million drivers switched to GEICO for savings, round-the-clock service, and the latest in online technology. Yep, millions switched and nobody put a single eye out.
- 21:41For a free rate quote, visit GEICO.com or call 1-800-947-AUTO. 15 minutes could save you 15%.
- 21:48Fixed rate mortgage or adjustable rate mortgage? Should you flip a coin or is there a better way to decide? Here's a Smart Borrow Tip, courtesy of the Smart Borrow Center at LendingTree.com.
- 21:57If you plan on staying in your home at least 5 years, the security of a fixed rate usually makes sense. But if you're not staying that long and adjustable rates are at least one point lower than fixed, it can save you a bundle.

- 22:17We are live at the Conway living room for a fill-in April's football party. And what a party it is, Jim. It's the coaching. You've really got to give Sam's Club credit from the HDTV to the dip. They made sure the Conways were ready to go.
- 22:30April's coming in with a veggie tray. Uh-oh, they're blitzing the carrot sticks. Oh, oh my, Phil Berson with some mini-weenies. Holy, that'll smoke it. Come to Sam's Club while you're buying great values on everything you need for your football party.
- 22:42Sam's Club, enjoy the possibilities. Join today to avoid the 10% service fee that applies to non-member purchases.
- 22:47Back at Phillips Arena, while counting all the players named to this game, including Sidney Crosby and the like, who weren't able to make it, 49 players, Sam Rosen, 28 were first-round draft picks, 8 first overall, 5 second overall, 3rd, 3rd overall.
- 23:03We've got some pretty good hockey players to take in today. Sam Rosen and Bill Clement for the 56th NHL All-Star Game.
- 23:09Thanks very much, Joe, and again, good evening, everyone. And just to elaborate on Joe's point, 5 players in the All-Star Game were selected 200th or later, and one, Marty San Luis, undrafted.
- 23:22Stardom has come a little earlier to some of these players than others. Regardless, they're all here today.
- 23:27That's right. Referees for the All-Star Game, Brad Watson and Rob Martell, the Lionsman Pat Dufouzo, who will retire at the end of this season, and Lyle Seitz.
- 23:37Rick DiPietro of the Islanders in goal to our left, Chris Osgood of the Detroit Red Wings in goal to our right.
- 23:43Vinny LeCavallier set to face off against Pavel Datsouk, LeCavallier of Tampa Bay, Datsouk of the Red Wings, and we are underway in the All-Star Game.
- 23:55The West has it in their own zone, out to center left side to Rick Nash of Columbus. From the red line, he gives it up into the east hole.
- 24:03And as he steals it, goes to the net, and scores! Just like that, Rick Nash, 12 seconds into the game with a steal and a shot that beats DiPietro.
- 24:15One thing doesn't change from regular season to the All-Star Game, turnovers kill. Andre Markov of the Montreal Canadiens decided to try from his own blue line, a pass right up the middle.
- 24:26Rick Nash caught it with his skates, kicked it up to the stick, and was in all alone and blasted a wrister for goal number one, 12 seconds in.
- 24:34Alright, that's a new All-Star record, fastest goal scored in an All-Star Game. Nick Lindstrom for the West on defense, place it out to center.
- 24:45Dash goes right wing to Jerome McGinley of the Calgary Flames, down the right wing boards. Center, to the net, it's knocked away. Comes out to Nick Lindstrom.
- 24:53A pass and front intercept to Markov. Markov with a long home run pass to LeCavillier with broken up by Lindstrom. Played by Markov from the Canadiens to LeCavillier at the red line.
- 25:03Circles back into his own zone for the east. Waves back to Zdeno Char of the Boston Bruins. It's off the stick, picked up by Marion Gavrich of Minnesota. Left circle, he shoots wide.
- 25:13Rebound all the way out to center, where Chris Pronger of the champion Anaheim Ducks plays it across.
- 25:18By the way, Sam, the record that was broken was that of Ted Lindsay that was set at 1950. 19 seconds into the All-Star Game. Now it's 12 seconds, the new record.
- 25:27Joe Thornton of the San Jose Sharks, who hasn't had a point in the All-Star Game. This is his fifth. Marion Gavrich, right circle.
- 25:34Back pass deflected away and out to center. Played by Eric Stahl of Carolina. Behind the back to Mark Savard. His pass through to Balkan. Balkan left wing side to Brian Campbell.
- 25:44In front, Eric Stahl shoots. His score. So a minute 20 seconds into the game. The East is tied in on a goal by Carolina Hurricane Eric Stahl.
- 25:56Okay, the over-under is officially 26. There we go. Eric Stahl was wide open. It looked for a second that Evgeny Malkin had made a mistake trying to hit somebody wide with a pass.
- 26:08But the puck was played out of the corner right up top of the paint to Eric Stahl who was on the other side of the net, wide open.
- 26:14Chris Osgood went down, stacked the pads, couldn't stop Stahl.
- 26:18Second career All-Star goal for Eric Stahl. East has it in their own zone. Game tied 1-1. Sergei Ganchar, his pass knocked away.
- 26:27Brian Campbell of Buffalo deep in his own zone. Plays it out to Eric Stahl in center. Up ahead to Mark Savard. Back to Stahl down the middle. Left wing to Malkin. He shoots.
- 26:35Saved by Osgood. Played by Scott Niedemeier of the West.
- 26:39The Anaheim's Up Star playing it across to Ed Jovanovski of Phoenix. And out to center it comes. Down the left side Jason Harnes. Back to Jovanovski.
- 26:46That's circled. He shoots. Club save by Di Pietro. And he bats it. Check that. One handed all the way down the ice.
- 26:53Racing after Jason Spezza but beaten to it by Scott Niedemeier. We have a whistle for an icing.
- 27:00Rick Di Pietro showing his baseball skills as he played a little fungo. Tossed it up in the air and batted it down the ice.
- 27:07Rick Dash got the goal unassisted for the West. Stahl from Campbell and Malkin for the East. We go to ice side to Billy Jaffee.
- 27:14Alright thanks a lot Sam. I'm right in between the benches right now with a great view right here. I have to actually probably go get my hockey helmet on so I don't get hit by an Aaron Pluck.
- 27:21But Rick Di Pietro you saw the baseball skills he has. He loves to take batting practice during the off season.
- 27:26In fact with the Long Island Ducks there and also Rick Di Pietro had a little bit of a tweak yesterday during the skills competition.
- 27:32So keep an eye on that. The kind of the hip area. He said told me this morning he said it was just a little thing that he did a few weeks ago.
- 27:38He's okay. He's ready to play tonight. The East with a puck. Ovechkin puts it in front to flex toward the net and is stopped by Osgood and he holds on.
- 27:45For Rick Di Pietro he's the first Islanders goaltender since Billy Smith in 1978 to play in the All-Star game.
- 27:54He's earned the right to be here. He's had a fantastic season.
- 27:59Charles Wan the owner of the New York Islanders knew what he was doing when he signed into a 15 year contract and everybody just shook their heads saying that is craziness.
- 28:06He doesn't look very crazy now. He's the franchise man.
- 28:10He's fired across Mike Ribeiro of the Dallas Stars into the offensive zone.
- 28:14The Islanders, Alonje Kopitar the LA Kings deflected away to Ro Ribeiro plays it in front off the skate. Di Pietro spins in the bottom of the right circle plays it on the forehand on the far corner and it's cleared out.
- 28:26Well Di Pietro came to put on his show. He's in the game. He showed us his baseball skills, his skating skills. I mean he was standing there saying come and get me guys.
- 28:33Ovechkin got a pass from Spetsa but he fanned on the shot and the puck is brought out by the West.
- 28:39John Horkoff of Edmonton right side of Mike Ribeiro plays it in deep.
- 28:44Di Pietro behind the net leaves it there.
- 28:47Dane Ocharoff ahead of Ovechkin right side to Mike Richards of the Philadelphia Flyers to Charah.
- 28:53Charah to the right circle. Now on the right corner he turns behind the back feed behind the net.
- 28:58Centered out in front comes all the way down back into the East zone.
- 29:02Three and a half minutes gone by. First period game tied 1-1. Fans want Di Pietro to fire it down the ice.
- 29:09He's waiting for an open man. The East moves across. It's knocked away from Marion Hulsa to Andre Barkoff for a shot saved by Osgood.
- 29:16And he holds on. Chris Osgood. Last time he was in an All-Star game was 1996.
- 29:22Believe it or not as many goals have been scored in All-Star game history.
- 29:27The two goals in a minute and 20 seconds. Second fastest in All-Star game history.
- 29:34The West with the puck. Rick Nash playing it right side for Jerome McGinla. Knocked away and recovered.
- 29:40Let me check that number. Yes. To start the game. Okay.
- 29:43Second fastest in All-Star history at the start of the game.
- 29:46A Gindlas pass intercepted by Marion Hulsa of the Atlanta Thrasher.
- 29:49He brings it out three on two. Right wing feed across the line.
- 29:53He's got Gomez of the New York Rangers. Works it ahead to his Dano Chara.
- 29:57In deep pass Mike Richards. Richards chases it down. Feeds Hulsa in the left circle.
- 30:02Cuts to the middle and is stopped. And the puck taken away by Pavel Dotsu who clears the center.
- 30:07Things have settled down Bill. We haven't had a goal in three minutes.
- 30:10But the one thing I like Sam is that the players aren't trying to fine tune it and cut it by over passing.
- 30:16I mean most of the time when there's been a shot available. You know they've talked about this.
- 30:19Look if the shot's there. Take it. Really you let the air out of the game when you overpass.
- 30:25Right. Scott Niedemeier of the Anaheim Ducks to Joe Thornton.
- 30:29His pass taken away by LeCabaguet. Right side to Alfredson in the circle.
- 30:33Cross-side feed. Down the middle. Malkin. Saved. Made by Osgood.

- 30:43Reverses behind his own net to Niedemeier.
- 30:45Up the right side to the west to the east blue line. Off the stick of Gabrik. Played by Brian Campbell.

- 31:43Picked up by Malkin. Steep back to the blue line. Forced out of the zone by Niedemeier.
- 31:47Malkin plays it cross-ice. In his own zone. Up the left side.
- 31:52And it's taken back by Jason Arnott. Of the Nashville Predators.
- 31:56No Nashville Predator has ever scored a goal in the All-Star game.
- 32:00Arnott drops it back. It's played in deep by Corey Perry.
- 32:04Arnott with Perry and Getslap. But the East takes over. Game tied 1-1.
- 32:096-20 gone by. In deep. Mark Savard is passed to Fleck it away.

- 32:22Good play by Chara. Then it's centered across by Getslap to Arnott.
- 32:25Side of the right circle. In the right corner. It's passed. Getslap to Perry.
- 32:29Perry feeds Getslap. Right side boards to Arnott. Into the corner.
- 32:33It's played off the boards by Chara. Comes around the net.
- 32:37Up the right side to Eric Stahl. Stahl left wing feed a little too far.
- 32:41For Ilya Kovačak. Played by Osgood around the boards. Game tied 1-1.
- 32:467 minutes gone by. First period. Across the line. Right side Getslap.
- 32:50In the middle of Corey Perry. His shot was blocked. Perry has it back.
- 32:54Perry with a back pass to Lindstrom. It comes out of the zone.
- 32:57And Lindstrom recovers. 10th All-Star game for Nick Lindstrom.
- 33:00In the last 11 seasons. He's awesome. And he'll never say no.
- 33:05And he deserves to be in every one. As a matter of fact,
- 33:08there are only four guys currently playing in the NHL that have won Norris trophies.
- 33:12Three of them are in this game. Kopitar. Nice feed to Rivero.
- 33:15Side of the right side of the net. His shot blocked by Brian Campbell.
- 33:18And brought out by Ovechkin. Down the left wing. Into the West Sony centers.
- 33:22Kopitar comes back to intercept. Kopitar of the Kings out to Sean Harkov.
- 33:26Touch pass to the head. Was blocked by Martan Saloui of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
- 33:31Duncan Keith of Chicago. Back into his own zone. Right side of Chris Pronger.
- 33:35Back to Duncan Keith. Keith's gotta love it playing with a guy like Chris Pronger.
- 33:40Right side of Rivero. Into the offensive zone. Cuts to the middle.
- 33:43Drops to Kopitar. Forced in on the right corner.
- 33:46He stumbles. Gets it back. Wines it in deep. To Harkov behind the net.

- 34:07They were offside. Offside on the play. 11.41 to go. First period in the All-Star Game.
- 34:13Tied at one. From Westwood One. This is NHL Radio.

- 35:52Welcome back to Phillips Arena. No Scrum. 1-1 is the score. I'm saying No Scrum with Deon Fonofi on the West Bench.
- 35:57We've got some forwards that are actually back checking, helping you guys out a little bit. What's up with that?
- 36:01Yeah, we like to see that as demon. And I'm sure the goal center likes that too, especially in a game like this.
- 36:06Hey, how about Joe Vanoski stepping up and actually making contact with an Eastern Conference forward?
- 36:10I didn't think that was in the hand before the All-Star game.
- 36:13Well, it's good because we want to play this game as high tempo as we can without getting hurt.
- 36:18And that's the biggest thing, have fun with it.
- 36:20Thanks a lot, Deon. Do not. Thank you.
- 36:22Alright guys, back upstairs.
- 36:23Thanks, Billy. Face off just outside the Western Zone. It's a little contact by Joe Vanoski.
- 36:28But Deon Fonofi mentioned they want to play at a high tempo. The tempo has been fantastic in this game so far.
- 36:33Game tied 1-1. 8.25 gone by first period. West moves in. Datsuk had it taken away.
- 36:39And it's brought up by Scott Gomez. Goes to the right side to Mike Richards.
- 36:43Richards centers, intercepted by Aguila. Aguila in his own zone. Pressured by Richards. Turns up the right side.
- 36:50Aguila, the leading scorer on the Western Conference All-Stars with 63 points.
- 36:55Finds Joe Vanoski. First shot saved by Deep Pietro. What a pass.
- 37:00And Gomez to center for the East across the West line. In deep. Back pass. Down the slide with a quick shot.
- 37:07Kimo Kibine missed the net. Kimo Kibine of the Philadelphia Flyers.
- 37:11Datsuk to Joe Vanoski and out the center to Regimel. Left wing to Nash. Cross the line. Left circle.
- 37:16Nash in deep pass. Taken away. Good block by Thomas Caberle of the Toronto Maple Leafs.
- 37:21Kibine back to Caberle behind his own net. Up the left side. The East in control.
- 37:279.15 gone by first period. Tied at one. Gomez across the West line. To the left circle. Into the middle.
- 37:33Mike Richards cuts to the left circle. Checked there by Gavrits. Gavrits. Stick check. Not body check.
- 37:39Worked ahead by Chara to Hosa. Back to the blue line to Chara. Right side of the blue line he holds.
- 37:44Ahead for Marion Hosa. Pressured there by Henrik Sedin of the Vancouver Canucks.
- 37:49Works on the right side of Mike Richards in the circle. Back hander in front. A score!
- 37:54Andrei Markov. He's stuck in from the left point. Osgood got a piece of it.
- 38:01But the East takes a 2-1 lead on a great feed from Richards to Markov.
- 38:06Mike Richards of the Flyers has really become a pinpoint passer this season. Especially on the backhand.
- 38:12Markov has snuck in in the back door. And Richards from the near boards threaded it to him.
- 38:18On the backhand. But one guy was instrumental in keeping this play alive. It was Marion Hosa.
- 38:23He did it out of the blue line. Frasher's fans have a lot to love in Hosa. Remains to be seen that this organization will be able to keep him.
- 38:29But you're talking about, to me, the best one on one player in the game right now. Marion Hosa. He had two guys on his back.
- 38:35Dion Fenouf moves in off the faceoff. Shoots him wide. You're right about Marion Hosa.
- 38:40Long shot by Fenouf from the blue line. Saved by Di Pietro. Played by Gavrik. Back to the left point to Nick Lindstrom.
- 38:46Lindstrom works it ahead to Joe Thornton. In deep side of the net. Out in front, Hendrick Sedin. It's knocked away from him.
- 38:52Played by Fenouf. Around the boards. Behind the net to Thornton. Thornton of the San Jose Sharks to Marion Gavrik.
- 38:58Back off the corner boards to Thornton. Cross-ice to Lindstrom. In deep, down low side of the net, Sedin.
- 39:03He feeds Gavrik in the left circle. Gavrik along the boards. Wides him behind the net. Passed Sedin.
- 39:08Chased down by Andre Markov, the Montreal Canadiens. Right wing, Fila Cavalier.
- 39:12Across the west line. Right circle. Cross-ice feed. Deflected away and goes behind the net.
- 39:17Fila Cavalier has him back against Fenouf. Pushing him to the boards. Not hard, but just shoving him.
- 39:22Back pass, Alfredson to Charoffer. A shot deflected high off the glass.
- 39:26Alfredson with a chance out in front off a giveaway. Had a save by Osgood.
- 39:31Rebound played by Joe Thornton. Plays it behind his net to Dion Fenouf. Taken away by Alfredson.
- 39:36Alfredson had a career high seven points on Thursday night. He brought it outside the zone and an offside is whistled.
- 39:43Alfredson with a seven point game as Ottawa beat Tampa Bay 8-4. 9-0-7 to go.
- 39:49First period in the All-Star game. East leading the West 2-1. You're listening to NHL Radio on Westwood 1.

- 41:31Welcome back to the NHL All-Star Game from Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Georgia. The Eastern Conference team with a 2-1 lead.
- 41:36I'm on the bench with Daniel Ampertz from the Eastern Conference. Seven points in your last game before you came into the All-Star.
- 41:42Weren't you supposed to save all those points for an All-Star game?
- 41:44Yes, it should be easier, but it's a lot of fun to be here. I mean, there's so many good players and it's just a great pleasure to see everybody and they all play in the same team as the Cavalier or Kovalchuk and those guys.
- 41:56Let the record be known, guys, that Daniel Ampertz right now has broken a sweat already. That's impressive right here. Good luck today. Thank you. Back upstairs, guys.
- 42:04Thanks, Billy. Daniel Ampertz. It's great to see him, one of the great stars of the NHL. Andre Markoff in his first All-Star game got the go-ahead goal for the East from Richards and Hossa at 9.43.
- 42:17The West with a puck in center. Give it up to Sergei Ganchar. Then it's pushed ahead by Jason Arnand in the East zone, picked up by Brian Campbell.
- 42:25Campbell behind his net up the right side to Eric Stahl. Stahl out the center to Mark Savard. Back to Stahl.
- 42:30Cross-ice feed goes off the skate, taken away by Chris Pronger for the West. Up the middle it bounces past Corey Perry all the way down and out to play it.
- 42:39Ricky Pietro. Deep Pietro taken down by Perry who is reaching in with a stick. There's no call. There hasn't been a penalty in five years in the All-Star game.
- 42:49Deep Pietro's got no stick. He gets it back as the play is cleared.
- 42:52The East comes out. Mark Savard across the line picked up by Kovalchuk. Lost control. Brian Campbell in deep knocks it down along the right wing boards.
- 43:01Skates back toward the blue line, feeds Eric Stahl down the middle. Down low for Kovalchuk. Back for Stahl but Pronger broke it up.
- 43:08And the West comes out. Up the right side Ryan gets lapped for the Anaheim Ducks into the right circle. Drops it back to his teammate Corey Perry.
- 43:15To the net. Saved. Deep Pietro. Nice save by Rick Deep Pietro. Savard. Pass for Stahl goes by him out to his left. Osgood to play it for the boards.
- 43:24Tipped ahead by Nina Myermer. Blocked back by Savard. Taken and fired out by Jovanovski. Right side of Romero.
- 43:30Into the East zone. Right circle. Centers through. Pass left side for Kopitkar. Is blocked and taken back by the East.
- 43:38That was one pass too many.
- 43:39Kovalchuk for the feed by St. Louis with a shot. Saved by Osgood. Rebound carries behind the net.
- 43:45Kovalchuk along the end boards. Try to play it in front and broke it up by the West.
- 43:49Ribeiro of the Dallas Stars up the left wing. In the East zone against Keemo Timmons. Drop back to Jovanovski. In front for Harkov.
- 43:57Knocked away from him. Harkov has it back. Right corner. Centers for Fanoff. Deflected away from him.
- 44:02Recovered by Kopitkar. Right side to Harkov. In deep for Ribeiro. Tipped in wide. Lot of passing there by the West, Bill.
- 44:10They had seams. They had room. As soon as one team stops skating, the other group is going to pick them apart.
- 44:15That's what the West was doing to the East.
- 44:17Osgood, side of his own net. Swings it around the boards. The West comes out to center. Game 6-40 remaining. First period East leading 2-1.
- 44:25Left wing Ribeiro. Cross ice feed for Harkov. Send it back the other way. Take it off to boards. Long pass for Spezza. Goes by him.
- 44:33He chases it down left corner. In the West zone. Cuts to the net. It's knocked away. Quick shot Omechkin. He scores!
- 44:42Osgood deflected away Spezza's chance right to Omechkin who fired it by. And it's 6-25 to go. In the first period the East leads it.
- 44:53Great O'Waugh. Here's how good Jason Spencer, the Ottawa Senators, is. He took it on a 2-on-1. Tried to make a play himself going to goal.
- 45:01I'm not sure whether he tried to get it out to Omechkin or if it just bounced out to him. But you don't give AO, the Washington Capitals, that kind of chance from that range.
- 45:10Chris Osgood had no opportunity to make the save. So the man that won the breakaway challenge last night in the skills competition of the Washington Capitals has scored.
- 45:20He just needs to work in the batting cave, Billy. He batted the puck up a few times beautifully with a hockey stick but he's swung in mid.
- 45:26Telling you, Sam, if they had little league in Russia he would have scored.
- 45:29You got it. The leading goal scorer, the NHL, gives the East a 3-1 lead. Alex Omechkin of the Washington Capitals has 39 goals in the regular season.
- 45:40And it's a 3-1 East lead. The West with a puck in their own zone for the off. Long pass to the red line for Dachshund.
- 45:46Picked up by Aguila across the East line. Left side, Peterick Nash. Nash has the Western Conference goal. They came 12 seconds into the game.
- 45:54Side of the net. Stuff in, try by Aguila is denied by Di Pietro, who's playing very well in goal for the Eastern All-Stars.
- 46:025.44 to go. First period in the 56th NHL All-Star game. The East 3, the West 1. You're listening to NHL Radio on Westwood 1.
- 46:13It's the NHL on NBC.
- 46:18The NHL's on NBC this Sunday with an Original 6 matchup between the New York Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens at 2 o'clock Eastern, 1 Central, 11 a.m. Pacific.

- 47:48Welcome back to the 56th annual NHL All-Star Game. NHL Radio and Westwood One Radio Network on the Western Conference Bench.
- 47:54Ryan Getsliff, Corey Perry from the Anaheim Ducks. I thought an All-Star Game was about playing with guys you normally don't get to play with.
- 48:00What's up with Mike Babcock? What are you guys together again, Ryan?
- 48:03Well, you know what? I think Babs saw the chemistry that we've had over the last three years playing together.
- 48:08So we thought we had to come here and obviously we're going to play on the line.
- 48:11He said to you guys, who's going to be the one that's going to shoot the puck?
- 48:14He said, we've got to get one of you guys to start shooting. Who's it going to be, Corey?
- 48:16Uh, I took that roll over. They didn't have to designate anyone. I just said I would.
- 48:22All right, he's got the stick ready. Getsliff looks like he's going to be the passer.
- 48:25Oh, yeah. What else is new?
- 48:27Back upstairs. Things don't change, they say. Back upstairs.
- 48:31Thanks, Billy. Out to play the puck behind us then is Rick DiPietro.
- 48:35He made a save, a good save off Chris Pronger just a moment ago.
- 48:38He's been really active, hasn't he? DiPietro not only making saves but behind his net.
- 48:42He actually got tripped and it could have been a penalty on Corey Perry a few minutes ago, but without a doubt, Rick DiPietro is getting as much out of this game as he can.
- 48:50Oh, he's playing fine. He's doing a great job of getting Malkin for the East in deep side of the net.
- 48:54Fido Alfredson at the goal line, backhands it to LeCavillier in the right corner, skates up the boards, drops it off to Malkin.
- 49:01Malkin comes out in front with a beautiful free to Campbell, and he scores!
- 49:05Brian Campbell of the Buffalo Sabres gives the East a 4-1 lead.
- 49:12Brian Campbell had a gaping net and he ripped it home, but if you're ever going to slide down to a backdoor position, this is the game to do it in.
- 49:21Gennie Malkin came out of the near corner, took a step out and looked right across above the paint.
- 49:27Brian Campbell had slid wide open into that backdoor slot and ripped it with a one-timer.
- 49:33Nice play by Campbell and even a better play by Malkin to find him.
- 49:39Brian Campbell, another guy whose future is up in the air. Will he be a Buffalo Sabre next year?
- 49:45Back comes the West, down 4-1. West scored the first goal, 12 seconds into the game.
- 49:50West beats and scores the next four. Savard cross-sized feed to Kovalchuk, back pass to his home press to the red line.
- 49:57Caballé cross-sized the team and up ahead in the West zone, Eric Stahl, his pass taken away by Henrikh Sedin.
- 50:04First time we haven't seen the Sedin twins together. Daniel didn't get picked for the All-Star game.
- 50:10Thornton to Henrikh Sedin, backhander, saved by Di Pietro. Out to the right point to Scott Niedemeier.
- 50:17Wines it in deep. Play behind the net. Out in front, Thornton with a backhander. May have gone off the side of the net.
- 50:23Di Pietro struck out the left pad, didn't give him anything. Out in front, Gabrik. Gabrik spins.
- 50:28And on the right corner, back pass up to the blue line to Niedemeier in the middle of Jovanovski.
- 50:33Down the right side, boards Kovalchuk, back to get it.
- 50:363.50 to go, first period, East leading 4-1. Sorry Bill.
- 50:40You mentioned Henrikh Sedin without his twin brother, identical twin brother.
- 50:44This is only the 11th game since the twins were 7 years old that they haven't played together.
- 50:49The East comes down, Kovalchuk down the left wing, side of the left circle, it's poke checked away by Jovanovski.
- 50:54Kovalchuk gets it back, with the back pass out of the zone. It is strange to see them, not to see them together.
- 50:5911 times since they were 7, it's amazing. Kovalchuk, we also are not sure that this is Henrikh.
- 51:05He was carrying his passport, I think.
- 51:11Oh, that's right, he had to. Savard, right circle, back pass to Charat, the blue line, right side of Kovalchuk, top of the circle, into the middle, he shoots high, off the glass.
- 51:19It was deflected up into the netting and play stops 3.10 to go, the first period, East with a 4-1 lead.
- 51:25Ryan Campbell getting the goal and getting Malkin his second assist of the game and Billy Lacavillier also getting an assist.
- 51:35MVP points, stacking up now. There you go.
- 51:39Campbell with the goal and an assist, Malkin with a couple of passes.
- 51:45Start to think about it.
- 51:48And the goaltender, Ricky Pietro, has played very well.
- 51:51In deep, to West, but it's taken away by Jason Spezza outside, outlets left side, San Luis, across the West line, pass in front is blocked, San Luis gets it back, backhander is a save by Osgood, cleared away by Fanoff, up the right side, Corey Perry.
- 52:05Across the red line, into the East zone against Markov, gives it up to Charat.
- 52:09Charat tied up, pushes it out of the zone, it's picked up by Jason Spezza.
- 52:13Across the West line, cuts to the middle, down the slot, feed left side, Ovechkin with a shot that's stopped by Osgood.
- 52:20Boy, Spezza waited for the last second to feed him.
- 52:22Campbell comes down, pass in front is tipped wide by San Luis.
- 52:26Ryan Campbell is below the goal line more than he is at the blue line.
- 52:30Another shot by Ovechkin was stopped by Osgood, the East skating very well, getting a lot of chances, right side, Gansha, in the middle, Spezza, down low, San Luis, in front, Ovechkin scores!
- 52:41Wow, what puck movement, great passing, and Ovechkin the finisher, with his second goal of the game, it's 5-1, the East leads it.
- 52:51That was sick, it went from Spezza, who was really up high in the zone, down low to the right of Chris Osgood to Marty San Luis, Alex Ovechkin was in a tripod position, unguarded, right in front of Osgood,
- 53:05and when Ozzie moved over to play San Luis, San Luis slipped it to Ovechkin, that may be the easiest goal Alex Ovechkin has ever scored.
- 53:13This is a tough night for Chris Osgood, who happens to be leading the league in goals against average, with the Detroit Red Wings enjoying a tremendous revival to his career in Detroit.
- 53:255-1, the East leads it, West Indy, Rivero with a pass that deflects across, picked up by Marion Hosa, kept in by Duncan Keat, winds it behind the East net, chased out by Campbell,
- 53:37pushes it ahead and stopped by Horkoff to the West, into the middle, Ante Kopitar, back pass Duncan Keat, Chris shot the flex wide, played by Kopitar in the left wing corner,
- 53:47Kopitar winds it deep to Rivero behind the net, Rivero trying to put it in front of, save, made on Horkoff by Deepietro, played across to Hosa from Richards,
- 53:57Hosa back to Richards up to left wing, in the West zone, cuts to the middle, angles to the right side, feeds Sergei Gonchar, Gonchar inside the blue line, right side to Campbell in the right circle,
- 54:07Campbell turns, he's all over the ice, he's skating well, cross ice feed to Richards, shot blocked, went off the skate, Horkoff able to clear the center to Kopitar,
- 54:16across the East line, cuts to the middle, Kopitar in the backhand, goes behind the net, Kopitar still with it, left wing quarters, pass blocked by Hosa, it's taken back by Horkoff,
- 54:27Horkoff behind the net, center feed, off the boards out of the zone, under a minute to go, first period, East 5, the West 1,
- 54:34ahead from Prauger to Rivero, gets it to Horkoff, back to Rivero for a shot, save, made off the glove, bounces down in the crease and is covered by Deepietro who looked behind him, he thought it went off his glove,
- 54:47behind the middle of the net, but it bounced down in front of him and he closed the pad, right now let's pause 10 seconds for station identification, this is Westwood 1, your home for NHL radio.
- 55:1140 seconds to go, first period as play resumes, the West in their own zone, Jovanovski around the net, the 5th East goal, Ovechkin, 2nd of the game, 3rd career all-star goal from San Luis and Spezza,
- 55:24to assist for Marty San Luis, to assist for Jason Spezza in the game, in deep Rick Nash, pass blocked, picked up by Aguindla in the right wing corner, double teamed, it's knocked away by Kimo Chimidon of the Flyers,
- 55:35picked up again by Aguindla, his pass taken away by Chimidon, up ahead to Wiggety Malkin, plays it off the board to Alfredson, down the left wing against Edelmeyer, back pass down the middle, Chimidon, Chimidon back pass to Malkin,
- 55:47and he passed up a shot and put it in the corner, taken by LeCavillier, he centers, it's intercepted and that's it, for the first period.
- 55:57So, a wild start when the West scored, Rick Nash scoring 12 seconds into the game, the East tied it at 1.20 and after that it's been all East as they lead 5-1 into the first,
- 56:13and you know what, I think Ricky Pietro has to be considered for MVP honors with his great goaltending.
- 56:20Yeah, he allowed one goal on 13 shots, now he could be just a distant memory by the time this thing is over, but he was a difference maker in this first period for the Eastern Conference All-Stars,
- 56:32the other guy for the East to me that was the most obvious player on the ice was not Alex Ovechkin in spite of the fact that he scored two goals, it was Brian Kamel of the Buffalo Sabres who was everywhere,
- 56:43he played every corner of the rink, every inch of the ice surface, and we saw what we came to see, great passing, great plays, Ovechkin scoring goals, it's all good Sam, it's all good.
- 56:54End of one period of the 56th NHL All-Star Game, the East leads the West 5-1, when we come back Joe Tollison rejoins us with the intermission report, you're listening to NHL Radio on Westwood 1.

- 58:48Welcome back to the Phillips Arena for the 56th NHL All-Star Game. I'm Joe Tolleson. This is the NHL Radio intermission report.
- 58:55Shouts are relatively even. East leading the West 16-13 in that department. The scoreboard is an entirely different matter as the Eastern Conference has a 5-1 advantage after one period of play.
- 59:08Well, earlier this week among all of the festivities that went up, well they were able to get some of the coaches together.
- 59:13And what happens when you put four NHL coaches around the table, throw out some questions on the state of the game, and then let the opinions fly?
- 59:20Well, that was the idea on Friday as the four coaches leading these two All-Star teams got together for a discussion of all things hockey.
- 59:27Topic number one, have they gotten too good at their jobs? Red Wings coach Mike Babcock.
- 59:32The preparation that goes into each and every game because you have access. When I was in Detroit last night and I'm sitting around and I'm watching five to six different games, you know what everybody does.
- 59:41So it's easy to prepare that way. You know all the players, even the teams in the East for example. We're in a different league. We hardly ever see them.
- 59:48But when you see them, you're prepared because you know the players by watching them on TV, by breaking it down with the computer systems that we have.
- 59:54The bottom line is the league is so tight you have to find an edge. What is that edge? That's preparation a lot of times.
- 1:00:00And if you feel you expect your players to prepare as a coach, you better out prepare the other coach.
- 1:00:05I think the resources and technology that we have to break down teams, to be able to watch all games basically your home or away and prepare for them is we're just using everything that's available to us.
- 1:00:16And that's what we're supposed to do. As Mike said, we're paid to win.
- 1:00:18John Paddock's Senators have done that better than any team in the Eastern Conference so far this season.
- 1:00:23He's in his first year as head coach in Ottawa where there are no unimportant hockey stories. The media scrutiny has been an eye-opener for him.
- 1:00:31I think sometimes whatever you feel your time restraints are a little much with having to do with media for us, especially in Canada.
- 1:00:39Overall I think you have to understand it's part of the job, part of the game. It's an important part to put positive spins on it.
- 1:00:46And we're fortunate our team is a good team and we get lots of positive press but it's just part of it. I think that we have to rebel in it and use it as best we can.
- 1:00:55The only thing that bothers me about media is the rumors. Let's deal with facts.
- 1:01:00We spend probably half our time, and I know these guys do, coaches, but I know the GMs answering calls about these fake trade rumors that these guys in Ottawa make up.
- 1:01:09We're in that world where somebody blogs something and we dealt with a big issue last week.
- 1:01:14If somebody blogs something it becomes the Bible and then you have to deal with it for you spend a whole day putting out all the fires of where there's no truth. That's the only frustrating part.
- 1:01:23Atlantis coach and GM Don Waddell has had to keep one eye on the ice and the other on the recent monster contract signed by players such as Philadelphia's Mike Richards and Alexander Ovechkin of the Capitals.
- 1:01:34That's because Waddell's got a major contract negotiation pending for one of his stars.
- 1:01:39We've got a situation. We've got a player in this last year contract. I wish he wasn't in this last year contract. A Marriott Hosa of course.
- 1:01:44Each team's got to make tough decisions. Like in Ovechkin's case, the owner, George McPhee, just felt that he's their franchise guy and they're going to keep him for a long term.
- 1:01:54They've tied him up for basically his career. We all make decisions that probably some other teams wouldn't make, whether it's four years for one guy or we all look at contracts that happen out there.
- 1:02:06I think you've got, you know, today's day with the salary cap, can you have two or three guys on those type of contracts? Probably not. But certainly lock up maybe your best player for a long term. I don't see a big problem with it.
- 1:02:16But according to Babcock, that's only if you know what you're getting.
- 1:02:19Well I think the big thing here is when you decide you're marrying one of these guys, you better darn well know who you're getting and you better know the kind of person they are and so they're not going to go to sleep on you.
- 1:02:28I know we've got some guys on long term deals, we're not concerned about them one bit. When you talk about motivation, the coach is in charge of the motivation. I'm not sure that's the truth.
- 1:02:36I think the environment you create in your room and the kind of people you have lead to the motivation and drive your team. And when I look at our group and I look at a guy like Nick Livestrom who's leading the way for us, I'm not one bit concerned when we sign a guy like Pavel Gautz who can do a long term deal because of the drive he has, but also because of the leadership and the atmosphere we have that he's not going to play hard.
- 1:02:56So two and a half years after the NHL's nuclear winner cost the league an entire season, is the game better off? San Jose head coach Ron Wilson.
- 1:03:04The improvement in the National Hockey League and the parity that's there now has to do with the number of quality players that are playing in our league.
- 1:03:12I think it's an entertaining game most nights. I think as long as you can keep some physical play in and the stars are allowed to strut their stuff quite often as they do. It's not necessarily goals, it's chances and the entertainment that come with them. With stars like Crosby and Ovechkin and Kovalchuk and stuff, there's not too many nights I don't think people are entertained.
- 1:03:32To me the game's at a real, real good point. We have so many bright young stars that are so dynamic offensively I just think the game gets better and better.
- 1:03:43Well indeed the game is better and better when you have such great stars and we've seen them on display this evening. And the East has the advantage 5 to 1. We've had plenty of highlights from that first period. We'll have them for you next from Westwood 1. This is NHL Radio.

- 1:06:03Welcome back to the Phillips Arena and the 56th NHL All-Star Game. I'm Joe Tolleson. This is the NHL Radio intermission report. Well, at the All-Star Game we promised you goals and one thing to learn when you come to an All-Star Game, get to your seat on time.
- 1:06:18And we are underway in the All-Star Game and the West has it their own zone out to center left side to Rick Nash of Columbus. From the red line he gives it up into the East Zone. Nash steals it, goes to the net, and scores! Just like that! Rick Nash, 12 seconds into the game with a steal and a shot that beats the Pietro.
- 1:06:40Fastest goal from the start of the game in NHL history. Ted Lindsay had the old record in 1950 and the West were out in front 1-0 but the East were able to bounce back.
- 1:06:50Back pass deflected away and out to center played by Eric Stahl of Carolina behind the back to Mark Savard. His pass through to Balkan. Balkan left wing side for Brian Campbell. In front, Eric Stahl shoots and scores!
- 1:07:04So a minute 20 seconds into the game. The East is tied in on a goal by Carolina Hurricane Eric Stahl.
- 1:07:12Second fastest two goals in All-Star history from the start of the game. A minute 20, the fastest 37 seconds in 1970 and the East would jump out to a 5-1 advantage in the first period but then at the very end as the West tried to come back, well, Rick DiPietro made a statement.
- 1:07:32From Fronger to Ribeiro gets the hard cop back to Ribeiro for a shot. Save made off the glove. Bounces down in the crease and is covered by DiPietro who looked behind him. He threw it off the glove. Behind him into the net. But it bounced down in front of him and he closed the pad.
- 1:07:48Well, terrific stop on Mike Ribeiro and later on we'll tell you about the save of the game brought to you by the U.S. Postal Service. You can save with the U.S. Postal Service because they offer affordable shipping options with no hidden surcharges and that's stopped by DiPietro, an early candidate.
- 1:08:03One period in the books. The East in front of the West 5-1. Second period action is coming up next as you're listening to NHL Radio on Westwood 1.

- 1:11:15Back at Phillips Arena getting set for the second period. Let's go downstairs to Billy Jaffe.
- 1:11:19Thank you, Joe. With Goal Tenor Rick DiPietro, an early goal against you, Rick, and the Eastern Conference.
- 1:11:25Just a few seconds in by Rick Nash. First of all, did that one catch you a little bit off guard there?
- 1:11:29Yeah, I mean a little bit. A little early, but I was trying to get used to the communicator in my ear, but he made a good shot, man.
- 1:11:35He's a great player. I thought he was going glove, went firehole, and that's all she wrote.
- 1:11:40But then after that, the focus picked up a little bit?
- 1:11:42Yeah, it settled in there a little bit. The guys played really well. They were defensively sound and made some great passes, great plays, and it was fun playing with those guys.
- 1:11:51A lot of people from the Eastern Conference, especially the New York area, know your ability to handle the puck.
- 1:11:56Baseball style as well. Saw a little bit of that in the first period. Showing North America, the rest of the hockey world, what you can do out there?
- 1:12:01Yeah, I didn't put enough backspin on it, trying to get spells going for the breakaway. But this is meant to be fun. Try to take chances and do crazy stuff.
- 1:12:09I have done that in a couple games, but when there's a lot less pressure, it's easier.
- 1:12:12All right, now you're miked up. You're getting an all-star workout, not only on the ice, but also on the bench.
- 1:12:17You're going to be getting one because you're going to be talking to everybody. You're going to try to keep the guys a little loose?
- 1:12:21Yeah, I mean, I tried my hand at broadcasting there at the last minute. I don't think I'm very good at the play-by-play.
- 1:12:26But no, this is great. I get relaxed now and just try to make it one laugh.
- 1:12:31Thank you, Rick. Great performance. Have fun the rest of the night.
- 1:12:33Thanks, Billy.
- 1:12:34All right, Rick DiPietro, Eastern Conference goaltender, giving up just one goal in the first period. Sam, back upstairs.
- 1:12:39Thanks very much, Billy, and a terrific first period for Rick DiPietro of the New York Islanders. Right now, prior to the start of the second period,
- 1:12:47both of the teams are lined up at their respective blue lines, and we are taking a moment to honor a pioneer in the National Hockey League
- 1:12:56because 50 years ago, this man broke the color barrier. Willie O'Ree is being introduced to the crowd here, walking out onto the ice.
- 1:13:06The first man of color to play in the National Hockey League for the Boston Bruins in 1958, and there was a youngster in the crowd that day
- 1:13:17watching him that night in Montreal. And that was you, Mr. Clement.
- 1:13:21I didn't realize, obviously, as a seven-year-old that I was witnessing history, and I didn't sink in for many years after that day.
- 1:13:29But I got to see one NHL game live from the time I was born till the time I was 16, and that game happened to be the first game that Willie O'Ree played in the National Hockey League.
- 1:13:39He has continued since his retirement, and he played for so many years in the minor leagues. He continues to define class. He's a special, special human being.
- 1:13:49You're very right. He works tirelessly with the NHL Diversity Program, with inner-city youth across all across North America, U.S. and Canada.
- 1:14:02He always has a smile on his face. He's always got time to go on the ice with the kids. He always has time to say hello.
- 1:14:09He is a tremendous man, a man of great class and dignity, and just, you know, you look at a man like that and you understand that he paved the way for so many athletes to play the sport.
- 1:14:22And at age 72, he seemed to have the same amount of energy that he had when I watched him play. He had a fantastic game.
- 1:14:29He wasn't one of the three stars, but I thought he should have been. I remember, too, because Montreal had a powerhouse, and Boston was awful,
- 1:14:36and the Bruins shut Montreal out three to nothing right in the Montreal Forum.
- 1:14:41Well, the honor, Willie O'Ree taking photographs with the captains, Vinnie LeCaballier and the man of color, Jerome McGillip.
- 1:14:51That was great to see. Now we are set to start the second period.
- 1:14:55Thomas Voeckun is in goal to our right, he of the Florida Panthers, and in goal to our left from the San Jose Sharks at Benne, Evgeny Nabokov, the West into the East zone.
- 1:15:06Henrikh Sadeen left side to Joe Thornton around the net, centers and is blocked by Brian Campbell, who's had a strong game for the East.
- 1:15:14And the puck to the line, Chris Pronger kept it in. Thornton puts it in front of the flection and a save made by Voeckun on Henrikh Sadeen.
- 1:15:22Out to Pronger for a shot, glove save by Voeckun, the puck still loose.
- 1:15:27Gabrik able to take it away, finds Duncan Chief, back to Gabrik in front, slides it wide and into the corner.
- 1:15:34Sergei Ganchar for the East, able to wind it around, good early pressure by the West.
- 1:15:39Sam, it looks like the West kind of gathered themselves in the locker room between periods, but they're running into the same problem they had on the first goal tending.
- 1:15:47Back the other way, Sabar Nikolichuk for a shot deflected over the netting, way up into the second deck here at Phillips Arena.
- 1:15:55And play stops 55 seconds gone by in the second period, the East with a 5-1 lead.
- 1:16:01Sam, we had talked earlier about the different levels of draft choices that are playing in this hockey game.
- 1:16:06Three of the goalies in this 56th All-Star game were drafted in the ninth round in 1994.
- 1:16:13Tim Thomas, Thomas Voeckun and Evgeny Nabokov were all taken in the ninth round.
- 1:16:18You said it earlier, Bill, different ways to start them in different routes to the NHL and they've showed it here.
- 1:16:25The East is offside going into the West zone, we go down to the bench to Billy Caffey.
- 1:16:29Alright, I'm on the Eastern bench for right now, Sam, and I'm standing next to Brian Campbell, already a goal in this game.
- 1:16:36At times it seems like you're getting more forwardized, you almost are on the blind,
- 1:16:40but it's got to be a lot of fun for an offensive guy like you to be able to get into the flow of the play.
- 1:16:44Yeah, I think that's why I played defense as a kid, to get more ice and still get up there as long as the coach doesn't get too mad at you.
- 1:16:50Now you play with a great goaltender, obviously in Buffalo and Ryan Miller,
- 1:16:53but you play with a very different style goalie here in the first, in Rick DiPietro.
- 1:16:56How much more pleasure is it to have a goalie that handles the puck like that?
- 1:16:59Yeah, it is nice, you know, sometimes going back there he can do the work for you,
- 1:17:03so I can leave, go for a breakout pass instead of going to the corners.
- 1:17:07Have fun the rest of the night.
- 1:17:08Alright, thanks.
- 1:17:09Thanks Billy.
- 1:17:10And thanks to Brian Campbell, the west in the east zone, the pass broken up by Marty Sanlouis,
- 1:17:15and Niedemeier for the west playing it to the left side.
- 1:17:18Centered to Ryan Getslap down the middle, and a nice pick, a body block by Thomas Cumberley,
- 1:17:25just stepped in front of him, prevented Getslap from getting a shot off.
- 1:17:29Legal, because Getslap had the puck.
- 1:17:30And by the way, that nifty info about the ninth round choices that were goaltenders,
- 1:17:34anybody think I spent enough time to come up with that, they're wrong.
- 1:17:37It's due to the exhaustive journalism by Joe Tollison.
- 1:17:41Investigative journalism.
- 1:17:43Way to go Joe.
- 1:17:44Bocoon almost played the puck outside the trapezoid, had to let it go,
- 1:17:48back the other way to the east into the west zone,
- 1:17:50Spezza with a pass deflected away, and it's whistled down and bounced off the netting.
- 1:17:56We are two minutes and twenty seconds into the second period of the 56th NHL All-Star Game,
- 1:18:03next year in Montreal.
- 1:18:06And they celebrate 100 years of hockey in Montreal.
- 1:18:11That's, I mean, how special could it get?
- 1:18:14I mean, it will not get any more special than it will next year in Montreal.
- 1:18:19In deep, Dion Fanouf, who was upended by Skype Gomez,
- 1:18:23the puck played by Mike Rivero for the west, up the left side,
- 1:18:26now to center on Jake Kopitar, the LA Kings.
- 1:18:28Three on two across the line, left side, Sean Horkoff.
- 1:18:31The Kopitar in deep couldn't get a shot off, goes around the net,
- 1:18:34into the right wing corner.
- 1:18:36His back pass taken away by Gomez.
- 1:18:38Gomez plays it in front for Chara, tips it ahead,
- 1:18:41taken away by Kopitar, in deep to Rivero.
- 1:18:44Rivero, side of the right circle, checked by Gomez, plays it down to Kopitar,
- 1:18:48centers and it's tipped out of the zone by Marian Hosa.
- 1:18:52Always defensively responsible, as good a scorer as he is,
- 1:18:55he's such a quality defensive player as well.
- 1:18:58Both zones, I mean, and the middle zone, all three zones, Marian Hosa is dynamic.
- 1:19:04Dion Fanouf with a shot, the right pad saved by Volcun,
- 1:19:07the rebound taken out by the east.
- 1:19:09Gomez, left wing feed across the line, Mike Richards, left circle,
- 1:19:12try to get it through to Hosa, he feeds Gomez,
- 1:19:15and across to Richards, a shot stumped by Demakov.
- 1:19:18Back behind the net, Gomez.
- 1:19:20Gomez of the New York Rangers, into the right circle.
- 1:19:23Richards feed, went off the stick of Fanouf behind the net.
- 1:19:26Fanouf to the west, skates to the right side, back hands it ahead to Rick Nash,
- 1:19:30who has the only goal for the Western Conference.
- 1:19:32Nash of the Columbus Blue Jackets to Aguila.
- 1:19:35Aguila, right circle, he shoots wide, off the glass and out of the zone.
- 1:19:40340, 350 gone by in this second period.
- 1:19:43Aguila down the left wing, in the east zone, cross-hice to Nash,
- 1:19:46he shoots off the post.
- 1:19:48I think Volcun may have gotten a piece of it, then it rang off the post.
- 1:19:52Nash puts it into the crease, steered away by Volcun to Gonschar.
- 1:19:56Sergei Gonschar of the Pittsburgh Penguins, in the middle, Brian Campbell.
- 1:20:00Campbell to the red line, across the west line, left side, they're offside.
- 1:20:04With 4-12 gone by in this second period, the went in the east, leading 5-1.
- 1:20:10Well, if it's not Gonschar, it's Campbell.
- 1:20:12They've been the most dominant team pair, Sergei Gonschar of the Pittsburgh Penguins
- 1:20:16and Brian Campbell of the Buffalo Sabres.
- 1:20:18I mentioned in the first period that three of the active four defensemen
- 1:20:22who have won Norris trophies are in this game, and they're all in the west.
- 1:20:26Scott Niedemeier of Anaheim, Nick Lindstrom of Detroit, and Chris Pronger of Anaheim.
- 1:20:31Rob Blake of the LA Kings is the fourth active player that's won a Norris trophy
- 1:20:35as the league's top D-man.
- 1:20:37Well, Lindstrom is dominating, that's the problem.
- 1:20:39He's won five of the last seven.
- 1:20:41And you know what, Sam, that most people don't know?
- 1:20:44That he was a runner-up for the Norris three other times.
- 1:20:48Oh, one of the greats, one of the all-time greats,
- 1:20:51LaComadie for the east, into the west zone, cuts to the middle,
- 1:20:54down the slot, down low for a shot that Malkin didn't get much of,
- 1:20:58chipped it just off the side of the net to the blue line, Gonschar,
- 1:21:01center of the blue line, skates down with it, feed left corner to Brian Campbell.
- 1:21:05Campbell's pass blocked by Pronger, taken by Alfredson out to Malkin,
- 1:21:08into the middle of Gonschar, down the slot, feed to the right side to Brian Campbell,
- 1:21:13his pass off the skate, taken away by Sadeem, long lead goes all the way down,
- 1:21:17Wokun stops inside of the net, up ahead to Malkin, cross ice in his own zone,
- 1:21:22taken away by Sadeem, puts it in front, and then Gonschar clears it aside.
- 1:21:27Gonschar for the east, clears the zone.
- 1:21:29Gonschar ahead for Alfredson, across the west line, right circle,
- 1:21:32Alfredson to the net, pass for Malkin, goes right by him.
- 1:21:35Malkin recovers along the left-wing boards, it's taken away by Scott Niedemeier,
- 1:21:39he's pressured by Alfredson, puck pushed up the boards to Joe Thornton,
- 1:21:43cross ice in center, Marion Gavreck of the Minnesota Wild, carries in deep,
- 1:21:48he's stopped by Kimo Timonen, back pass to Ed Jovanovski of the Phoenix Coyotes,
- 1:21:52hard shot, save, rebound, Sadeem saved by Wokun.
- 1:21:56Wokun off to a good start here.
- 1:21:58One thing is obvious in this period, the Western Conference guys are firing,
- 1:22:01they're shooting pucks, why? Well, they're down 5-1,
- 1:22:04they haven't been able to solve the goaltending of the east.
- 1:22:06The east, on the other hand, have had numerous opportunities to let it rip,
- 1:22:11and they're overpassing right now with the lead.
- 1:22:13Kammerle to Kovalchuk, left circle to the net, save, rebound, save, Nabakov.
- 1:22:18With one exception, Ilya Kovalchuk, when he gets it, he just rips it.
- 1:22:22Back to the other way, Corey Perry for the west, slides it ahead to Getslap,
- 1:22:25in front, blocked by Wokun, a save on the play, goes into the corner,
- 1:22:29picked up by Jovanovski, centering feed, deflects in front,
- 1:22:32and Getslap trying to pass down low, and it was knocked away.
- 1:22:37He tried to feed Jason Arnott, back comes Corey Perry, right circle,
- 1:22:40into the middle of Getslap, Getslap to the net, save, Wokun.
- 1:22:44And Eric Stahl clears it out, right side to Mark Savard.
- 1:22:47Savard dumps it into the left-wing corner, Kovalchuk after,
- 1:22:50flies behind the net, poked away by Nabakov.
- 1:22:53Padukh outlets to Corey Perry, off his stick.
- 1:22:56Markov sends it ahead to Savard, back pass to his teammate,
- 1:23:00to the Boston Bruins, Dano Chara.
- 1:23:02Chara left side of Markov, skates to the red line,
- 1:23:05feed ahead to Kovalchuk, in the west zone, it's poked away.
- 1:23:08And Ryan Getslap for the Anaheim Ducks has it.
- 1:23:11Seven minutes gone by, second period, 5-1, East leading it.
- 1:23:15Corey Perry left wing, left circle, puts it in front,
- 1:23:18stick the side by Wokun, fired out by Markov.
- 1:23:22It goes by Nick Lindstrom, deep in the west zone, Lindstrom back to get it.
- 1:23:27Lindstrom circles the net, meant by Ovechkin, blocks the pass,
- 1:23:30Lindstrom chips it out of the zone, picks it up himself.
- 1:23:33Across the east line, right side on Jay Kopitar.
- 1:23:36Kopitar to the middle, quick shot, a glove save.
- 1:23:39Horkov with a shot, went off the glove of Wokun, into the net.
- 1:23:437-27, gone by, in the second period, the East 5, the West 1, from Westwood 1.
- 1:23:50This is NHL Radio.

- 1:25:26Sam Rosen, Bill Clement, Billy Jaffe, Joe Tolleson,
- 1:25:30and Philip Serena in Atlanta for the 2008 NHL All-Star Game.
- 1:25:35The East with a 5-1 lead and the goalies for the East playing very well.
- 1:25:38Well, in this second period, the West is out shooting the East 9-1,
- 1:25:41but they're running into the same problem that they had in the first.
- 1:25:44Thomas Volcun is as good as Rick DiPietro, Thomas Volcun of the Florida Panthers.
- 1:25:49Maybe the problem is Volcun and DiPietro both have a right-handed with a glove.
- 1:25:54That's it. They're cheating.
- 1:25:55That's it.
- 1:25:56We've got it all backwards.
- 1:25:58The East comes out, up the right side, Jason Spezza of Ottawa,
- 1:26:01in the middle of Andre Markoff off his feet, cleared the side by Nabokov to Kopitar.
- 1:26:07Andrzej Kopitar around the net, right side in the West zone.
- 1:26:10Cross-eye speed to the red line to Horkoff, back the other way for Kopitar.
- 1:26:14Markoff broke it up.
- 1:26:16And across the line, the West is offside.
- 1:26:19We go down to the benches to Billy Jaffe.
- 1:26:21Thanks a lot, Sam.
- 1:26:22Back on the East bench with the assistant coach of the Eastern team, Don Waddell,
- 1:26:26who is also the head coach, general manager, and executive vice president of the Atlanta Thrasher.
- 1:26:30This event was supposed to be here a few years ago, but the lockout happened.
- 1:26:34Now that it's finally here and it's almost done, what has this weekend meant to you, Don?
- 1:26:38Well, it's been a long time coming, Billy, and we're so pleased to be able to host this event.
- 1:26:42It's been a tremendous weekend for our fans and for us to be able to showcase the best players in the world to our fans.
- 1:26:49You know, it's very exciting for us.
- 1:26:50We've had a lot of events around the game, besides the skills competition
- 1:26:54and other events happening around the city of Atlanta here,
- 1:26:57and the people have all turned out and they've embraced this weekend,
- 1:27:00and I think it's been a good one for a win-win for everybody.
- 1:27:03This is so-called a new growing hockey market.
- 1:27:05It means an awful lot to have something like this here.
- 1:27:07The growth has been tremendous, hasn't it?
- 1:27:09Yeah, it has, and we're still in the growing period, you know,
- 1:27:11because I said when I first got here, it's going to be 10, 15 years,
- 1:27:14and we're still going to be trying to introduce this great game of hockey to our fans here in the South.
- 1:27:18And the only thing we can do to have events like this are only going to be big additions for us down the year.
- 1:27:23Great talking to you. Thanks a lot.
- 1:27:24Alright, Billy.
- 1:27:25Back upstairs, Sam and Bill.
- 1:27:26Thank you, Billy, and thanks to Don Waddell.
- 1:27:28The West moves in deep. Horkov back pass, Ribero shot blocked.
- 1:27:32Blocked by Brian Campbell.
- 1:27:34He clears the zone and Scott Niedemeier has it at his own line.
- 1:27:38Up ahead, across the line, Jerome McGinla, the captain of the Western All-Stars,
- 1:27:42captain of the Calgary Flames, dropping it off for Scott Niedemeier.
- 1:27:46Brian Campbell is just all over the place. He was defending out of the blue line.
- 1:27:49And I'll tell you this, the Eastern Conference is better defensively in this game.
- 1:27:54They really are.
- 1:27:55Interesting. Three on two for the East across the West line.
- 1:27:58Played cross-ice to Brian Campbell. Top of the right circle.
- 1:28:01Knocked away by McGinla out of the zone.
- 1:28:03Recovered by Marion Hosa. He stickhandles around three men.
- 1:28:07Drops it back to Scott Gomez.
- 1:28:09Gomez plays it left side to Campbell.
- 1:28:11Up ahead, it's taken back by the West.
- 1:28:13Cleared out of the zone. Lead for Nash.
- 1:28:15Breaks to the net. Nash in. Fake scores.
- 1:28:18Oh, Rick Dad.
- 1:28:21He has got highlight goals.
- 1:28:24He's had them during the regular season.
- 1:28:26And that was another one here in the All-Star game.
- 1:28:29It's 5-2 in favor of the East.
- 1:28:32And Rick Nash has both Western Conference goals.
- 1:28:35The big man found his seam up the middle in the Columbus Blue Jacket horse.
- 1:28:39Just put it into overdrive.
- 1:28:41He changes directions and is so shifty when he gets in alone.
- 1:28:45He had Bocoon going to his right.
- 1:28:47And Nash pulled it back to his own backhand and cleanly beat Thomas Bocoon.
- 1:28:52Down to the benches to Billy Chappie.
- 1:28:54One of the funniest things we've seen so far today, guys, down here.
- 1:28:57Before that goal was scored by Rick Nash.
- 1:28:59The Eastern team had six red sweaters on the ice for about 15-20 seconds.
- 1:29:03Pat DiPuzzo was trying to shoe off one of the players.
- 1:29:05He didn't want to be the first guy to have to call a penalty in about five years.
- 1:29:09And then he looked at Marion Hosa and he said, what are you doing? Get back out there.
- 1:29:12And then he shrugged after Nash scored and said, I guess it didn't help. Back upstairs.
- 1:29:17No penalty in any of the last five All-Star games.
- 1:29:22Here's Gomez in deep for the East. Feeds Marion Hosa spinning in front.
- 1:29:27Hosa turns into the right circle. Plays it into the corner to Mike Richards.
- 1:29:31Richards leaves it for Gomez. Finds Hosa. He shoots. Deflected off the glass.
- 1:29:35Wide in the net. Comes to the near side. Hosa winds it ahead for Richards.
- 1:29:40Mike Richards spun around. Ooh, that could have been a penalty on Dion Fadou.
- 1:29:44And a breakaway. Gabrik to the net. He fakes. He shoots. Save with a right pad.
- 1:29:48Great save by Volcun.
- 1:29:51In deep, Henrik Sedina. Joe Thornton. Pass in front. Deflected into the crease.
- 1:29:55And smothered by Volcun.
- 1:29:57Marion Gabrik was even punching away at it. He wanted one.
- 1:30:01Gabrik of the Minnesota Wild to be the most explosive skater in the whole NHL.
- 1:30:06Nine-twenty-four to go. Second period of the All-Star game. The East Five. The West Two.

- 1:32:1413-1, the shots in favor of the Western Conference. They have one goal to show for it.
- 1:32:20Good goaltending. Thomas Facoon in 11 minutes has seen 13 shots.
- 1:32:27The East moves in. Lacaville with a shot. Saved by Nabakov.
- 1:32:31Lacaville waited. He wanted a pass, and when he had no one to pass to, he finally took the shot.
- 1:32:36Alfredson with a keep-in. Down low, Lacaville. Pass tipped away and comes out of the zone.
- 1:32:41Picked up by Corey Perry. Breaks down the left wing. Drop pass to Ryan Getslap. Left circle.
- 1:32:46His pass tipped to Ponger, and he shoots it wide. Around to Corey Perry.
- 1:32:50And Maulkin try to move it. Perry gets it back to Getslap.
- 1:32:53Side of the net. In front he shoots. Saved by Facoon. It popped in the air, and he's got it on his shoulder.
- 1:33:00And play and stop. Might have been in the, maybe in the glove, the blocker glove.
- 1:33:07Well, he was all shrugged up, wasn't he? He didn't want to move.
- 1:33:09It was jammed someplace, but not only did Thomas Facoon not know where it was,
- 1:33:13Daniel Alfredson, of the Ottawa Senators, wasn't sure if it was going to pop out or not.
- 1:33:17Alfredson was standing behind him with his hand out, waiting for the puck to show itself to swat it away.
- 1:33:22Faceoff win by Sean Horkoff of the Edmonton Oilers. Horkoff gets it back behind the East Net.
- 1:33:27Horkoff looking. Check by Chara. Poked it away to the near boards.
- 1:33:32Savard gives it away to Kopitar. Kopitar side of the net. Broken up by Andre Markov.
- 1:33:37Out of the zone, Savard. Right wing feed to Eric Stahl. Stahl has a goal in the game.
- 1:33:42It's knocked away from him. Deep in the West zone. Horkoff's got it.
- 1:33:46The West's second goal was Rick Nash. His fourth career all-star goal.
- 1:33:50This is his third all-star game from Datsuk at 9.34.
- 1:33:54Quick shot by Kopitar goes wide. Savard clears it out.
- 1:33:58Kovachuk breaks down the left side. Into the zone. Pass it front. Stahl.
- 1:34:02Carried it behind the net. Wines it around the boards for a barrel for the West.
- 1:34:06Plays it back to Jovanovsky. Jovanovsky puts it in front to Scott Niedemeier.
- 1:34:11And on to Sean Horkoff. Horkoff up the right side into the East zone.
- 1:34:16Pulls up along the half boards. Wines it in deep behind the East net.
- 1:34:20And it's taken by Eric Stahl. And he sends out Mark Savard.
- 1:34:24Savard the leading scorer. The Boston Bruins cross the blue line.
- 1:34:27In front for Kovachuk, his former teammate in Atlanta. But it went through.
- 1:34:31What a burst of speed by Kovachuk. He caught three guys and passed them
- 1:34:35to get open for the Savard pass. It just misfired.
- 1:34:38Savard, one of the top assist men in the NHL.
- 1:34:427.20 to go. Second period. The East five, the West two.
- 1:34:47Across the line, Dion Panouk with a big slap shot that missed the net.
- 1:34:51It's the first one of those we've seen. Up the right side.
- 1:34:54Spezza three on one down low and his pass is behind.
- 1:34:58Kovachuk, kept in by Chara. Ahead of Martez Saloui. Left circle.
- 1:35:03Pass off the skate to Nick Lindstrom. Pick up by Spezza.
- 1:35:06Right circle. Pressured by Lindstrom with a stick.
- 1:35:09Spezza turns and it's taken away by Kopitar for the West.
- 1:35:12And in the middle Dotsuk. Across the East line. Right side feed to Rick Dash.
- 1:35:17Nash to the goal line. Goes behind the net. He was hooked a little by Brian Campbell.
- 1:35:21Tucked loose. Played by Aguila. And Nash gets it behind the net to Dotsuk.
- 1:35:26Center. Knocked away by Bocoon. Shot by Aguila. Off the post.
- 1:35:30And the rebound carried out by Ovechkin. Down the right side against Aguila.
- 1:35:34He pulls up. Side of the right circle. Finds the trailer.
- 1:35:37Campbell down the middle. Save made by Novakov.
- 1:35:40Try to cover the rebound but Pronger, his teammate, tuck it.
- 1:35:43And it's cleared out. Aguila. Right wing to Nash. Across the East line.
- 1:35:48Try to cut to the middle. It's taken away by Saloui.
- 1:35:50Off the middle is Spezza. In the West zone. Circles. Turn around feed.
- 1:35:54Right side of Ganchar. Ganchar centers. It's taken away by Pronger.
- 1:35:58Clears to Aguila in center. Two on one. With Campbell back.
- 1:36:02Right side of Nash. To the net. Save Bocoon.
- 1:36:05What a save by Bocoon but he just stood there. I mean he didn't even have to move.
- 1:36:08He was so cool cutting down the angle. Back the other way.
- 1:36:11Three on two for the East. Spezza into the right circle.
- 1:36:13Centers. Saloui. Shoots it over the top of the net. Rebound the left corner.
- 1:36:18Ovechkin. Back pass to the point. Cabralet.
- 1:36:21Cabralet skates right along the blue line. Feed to Ovechkin.
- 1:36:23His pass deflected side of the net. One hand away by Novakov to Dotsuk.
- 1:36:28And in the middle, Hendrick Sedin. Across the East line. Three men back.
- 1:36:31Sedin goes deep. Circles. Centers. And it goes through Joe Thornton to the far boards.
- 1:36:38Round in deep to Thornton left corner. Thornton behind the net to Sedin.
- 1:36:42Sedin comes out in front and it's chipped over the top by Joe Thornton.
- 1:36:46Still looking for his first all-star point.
- 1:36:49And the back pass out of the zone. Racing for it. Right side. Hosa.
- 1:36:53Chips it in front. It's blocked by Gaberich.
- 1:36:55And it's picked up by Jovanovsky. Almost kicked it into his own net.
- 1:36:59Novakov one-hands it up the boards.
- 1:37:02Scott Niedemeier out for the red line to Sedin. Right side of Thornton into the right circle.
- 1:37:07Holds up. Back pass to Niedemeier. Down the middle with a shot. He scores!
- 1:37:14Scott Niedemeier with the second goal of the second period for the Western All-Stars.
- 1:37:21And now it's the East Five and the West Three.
- 1:37:24And chalk up the first all-star point for Joe Thornton because he made it happen.
- 1:37:29He came along the near boards on his off wing. Put on the brakes. Nobody challenged him.
- 1:37:34Scott Niedemeier had it in full cruise control. Coming right down the middle.
- 1:37:38And drifted one low on the ice to the left side of Thomas Volcune.
- 1:37:42Four fifty-two to go. Second period. The West has cut into the East lead. It's five to three.

- 1:39:26We're back at the NHL All-Star Game on the NHL Radio Network in Westwood, London.
- 1:39:30I'm with Ed Jovanovsky just on the Western Conference Venture.
- 1:39:33Take us inside the locker room. It was a big difference now what was said between the first and second periods.
- 1:39:38You guys are making a game out of it. Not much.
- 1:39:41I thought, you know, All-Star Games are trying to make the cute plays.
- 1:39:45I think we only had about a couple of shots during the first period.
- 1:39:49So, getting back to shooting the puck this period.
- 1:39:51Taking the man as well, Ed Jovanovsky, the only real good hit in this game.
- 1:39:54Back upstairs, guys. That's right, Billy. Thank you very much.
- 1:39:58The only hit credited in the game is to Ed Jovanovsky.
- 1:40:02He's right about shooting the puck more, right, Billy?
- 1:40:0418-3, the West is out shooting the East. Not in the game. In this period.
- 1:40:09Wow.
- 1:40:10Gaberich for the West in the offensive zone along the left wing.
- 1:40:13Board centers to Thornton, plays it into the left corner.
- 1:40:16It's played in front, poked away, loose puck.
- 1:40:18And Richard's able to get it back to Thiemann.
- 1:40:21Up ahead for Gomez, right wing for Hosa.
- 1:40:23It bounces by him, chases down, right wing corner, drops it off and Thornton has it back.
- 1:40:284-10 to go. 4-10 to go in this second period.
- 1:40:33The East leading the West 5-3.
- 1:40:35For Scott Niedemeier, it's his second career all-star goal.
- 1:40:39Here's Dion Fennuff down the middle with a shot.
- 1:40:41Save O'Koon.
- 1:40:42The last goal that Niedemeier scored was in 1998 as a member of the New Jersey Devils.
- 1:40:48And that's the last time a Devils player has scored in an all-star game.
- 1:40:52And unfortunately for New Jersey, with Martan Bredouin out here, they don't have any players in the game.
- 1:40:58Gaberich around the East net, double-teamed.
- 1:41:01And the puck taken away by Chara, able to feed Hosa.
- 1:41:04Deep in his own zone, right side of Markoff, up the middle of Gomez in center.
- 1:41:09Left wing feed to Hosa, across the line.
- 1:41:12Centers back to Richards.
- 1:41:13Richards pass intercepted, taken away by Getslap.
- 1:41:16Getslap to Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks in the offensive zone.
- 1:41:21Dropped it off for Corey Ferry, knocked away by Chara.
- 1:41:24Pronger back after it, Malkin beats it to him.
- 1:41:27Centers, Lacaville to Alfredson and a save by Nibakov.
- 1:41:32Oh, beautiful play by Lacaville, feeding Daniel Alfredson back the other way.
- 1:41:37Jason Arnott, his pass, tipped away by Chara.
- 1:41:40Arnott recovers, feeds Getslap, left in the right-wing corner.
- 1:41:44Getslap skates behind the net, feeds Corey Ferry, back pass to the left point to Pronger.
- 1:41:48Right point to Duncan Keith.
- 1:41:50Keith, cross-ice feed, left side to Ferry.
- 1:41:52Right side feed to Arnott, with a quick shot deflected into the corner.
- 1:41:562.40 to go, second period, the East 5, the West 3.
- 1:42:00The East had a 5-1 lead coming into the second period.
- 1:42:04West has controlled the play here in the second.
- 1:42:08Huck in the West zone, loose puck taken away by Alfredson, turns to the slot for a shot.
- 1:42:13Save made by Nibakov.
- 1:42:15And the rebound taken out by Pronger.
- 1:42:18You notice the East has decided all of a sudden to shoot.
- 1:42:20Yeah, down the middle, where the feed Horkov, it's blocked, and the East turns it.
- 1:42:25Kamalkin, right side to LeCavillier, into the West zone, right circle, pass in front, blocked by Niedemeier.
- 1:42:30To the side of the net, poked behind the net by Nibakov, goes into the corner, Alfredson has it for the East.
- 1:42:35Right circle, poked away up to the blue line to Ganschar, feed to Alfredson, left side, Campbell.
- 1:42:40Campbell in deep to the net, has no shot, skates around the net, feed into the corner.
- 1:42:45Kamalkin, back pass to Ganschar, left side of LeCavillier, toward the net, tip, loose puck, swatted at, and missed by Kamalkin.
- 1:42:53The Russian players need to go to the batting cage.
- 1:42:55Well, they also need to go to the golf course, that looked more like a golf swing than a whiff.
- 1:42:59Right side, Corey Perry from the West, cuts to the net, save O'Koon, and he covers up with 1.35 to go in the second period, and he's leading 5-3.
- 1:43:10But the West, dominating play here in the second period.
- 1:43:15The NHL does its best to make sure that every team is represented, although it's not mandatory, and the rules for setting up the All-Star game,
- 1:43:22Sam, you mentioned the Devils are not represented because Marty Bordura is taking care of family business.
- 1:43:27The Colorado Avs, the only other team, the Avalanche that is not represented here, Paul Stastny was supposed to be here, but he had an appendectomy.
- 1:43:34No telling if Joe Sack and Corian Smith would have been here, they had their seasons interrupted with injuries.
- 1:43:40The East into the West, so left side, Kovalchuk, hooked away by Finovsk, back hands it off to Ward, blocked by Savard, taken back by Harkov,
- 1:43:48crashed in by Eric Stahl, along the end Ward Stahl takes it away, beat us to the bar, and his pass blocks by Finovsk,
- 1:43:54bats it up in the air, out in front, quick shot, club save, Nabokov, and Kovalchuk follows to the ice in disbelief.
- 1:44:05Arms spread, he looks to the heavens, can't understand how Nabokov, his fellow countryman, could have robbed him like that.
- 1:44:13But as soon as Kovalchuk got up from making the snow angel on his back, he skated right into Nabokov and they hugged one another.
- 1:44:20It was, Kovalchuk was in complete disbelief because you will never see a better save than this in an All-Star game.
- 1:44:26This was labeled the upper 90% of the net, glove side high, and Nabokov was able to snare it.
- 1:44:32Savard wins the faceoff, Campbell left side, right side to Stahl, fires in front block by Finovsk, he clears it all the way down, out to play it,
- 1:44:39right side of the net is Hocune, up the right side to Eric Stahl, Stahl ahead to Campbell, Campbell for the east, up the right side across the line,
- 1:44:46cuts to the middle, leaves for Kovalchuk, right circle, Kovalchuk right corner, behind the net, wrap around, try, went wide by Savard,
- 1:44:54rebound to the near side, Kovalchuk, back pass to Campbell, down the middle, bat it away by Datsuk, recovered by Stahl for the east,
- 1:45:01checked along the boards, Datsuk, pokes at it, Stahl pushes it ahead, Finovsk takes it away, Leon Finovsk lost it, Eric Stahl's got it,
- 1:45:10Stahl's pass blocked by Lindstrom.
- 1:45:12They're really working hard to try to get Kovalchuk a goal here.
- 1:45:15Left side to Ginla, across the line, three on two, in deep, cross ice for Nash, it goes by him, Kovalchuk had it taken away by Finovsk, in deep,
- 1:45:23Ginla to Nash, back forward, Eric Stahl takes it away, fires it out to Kovalchuk, up the middle, he's got a breakaway to the net to get Dabakov,
- 1:45:31save Dabakov, great save as the period comes to an end.
- 1:45:36Kovalchuk just threw his stick down on the ice, he doesn't know what to do, maybe he should just try chewing on it because he has been robbed at least four times in this game.
- 1:45:46It was almost as if Dabakov knew what was coming because he kicked out, he stacked the pads to the left right away and he beat Kovalchuk on the play.
- 1:45:56Dabakov choked up on his stick waiting for the poke check in case there was a deke, but when he realized Kovalchuk was going to shoot,
- 1:46:03he just decided to lay down and take away as much of the net with his entire body and when he stacked the pads he lifted his left leg in the air, robbed Kovalchuk again.
- 1:46:12Well that was fun, and now we've got a pretty good game going. The West had 18 shots in the second period to 8 for the East,
- 1:46:20the West scoring the only two goals, shots of 31-24 through two periods, and at the end of two in the 2008 NHL All-Star game,
- 1:46:29it's the East 5 with all five goals in the first period and the West 3.
- 1:46:35When we come back, Joe Tolleson rejoins us with the intermission report. You're listening to NHL Radio on Westwood One.

- 1:47:53If you plan on staying in your home at least five years, the security of a fixed rate usually makes sense.

- 1:49:49Welcome back to the Phillips Arena, site of the 56th NHL All-Star Game.
- 1:49:54And after two periods, it is the Eastern Conference Stars still in front of the West by a 5-3 score.
- 1:50:00But they had all five of their goals in the first period.
- 1:50:02And for the first time since 2002, when the World Stars shut out North America with Nikolai Habe Bolaninet,
- 1:50:08has a team gone a full period in an All-Star Game without scoring a goal.
- 1:50:13Well, we are watching some of the best hockey players in the world.
- 1:50:16And before they got to this stage, they had dreams of their own, of making it to the National Hockey League.
- 1:50:22Let's drop.
- 1:50:23He tees it up. Fire the puck. He scores!
- 1:50:25The Senators have scored again. Kaysens, that's that.
- 1:50:28He's in the score! Correctness!
- 1:50:32Before they were players, they were fans.
- 1:50:34I had like two ice cream in my guy with snow, but Sergey got it off.
- 1:50:38Josak, it was one of my favorites growing up.
- 1:50:40You're my favorite lady.
- 1:50:42It's easy to forget when you look at the talent on display here in Atlanta this weekend,
- 1:50:46that these guys are just the latest in a long line of legends, and they all have their favorites.
- 1:50:51McClain leaves it to the left, and bam, Cam Neely.
- 1:50:55I was a huge Cam Neely fan. He was my idol growing up, just like the type of player he was and the style that he played.
- 1:51:01Nashville's Jason Arnett is one of many who admire the Bruins' Hall of Famer.
- 1:51:05Scott Gomez of the Rangers was a fan of a guy with a similar game.
- 1:51:08My favorite player all the time was Dougie Gilmore.
- 1:51:10Rebounded from the score! Gilmore!
- 1:51:13He was just the man. He was just a special player.
- 1:51:15I'm fortunate to meet the guy, but Dougie Gilmore was definitely my idol growing up, and he's always been my favorite hockey player.
- 1:51:22Obviously, as a defenseman, I look mostly at the defensemen. I look at Ray Burke and Paul Coffey,
- 1:51:28and obviously Russian defensemen like T.T. Stefan and Kasapovna when I was growing up.
- 1:51:32Washington's Sergei Ganchar watched the NHL from afar as he grew up in Russia.
- 1:51:37Like many Eastern Europeans, his first exposure to the North American game came in the international tournaments of the 70s and 80s.
- 1:51:44You know, at that time, we started having those series.
- 1:51:46You remember how the Red Army team would come and play seven games.
- 1:51:49Obviously, I've seen some games, and I was following two newspapers.
- 1:51:53But when you grow up, you're never dreaming about going to the NHL at that time
- 1:51:57because obviously everybody staying at home and playing for the national team is probably your biggest goal and biggest challenge.
- 1:52:02When I grew up, it was all about Laryonov-Makarov, Tretyaks, Fetisov.
- 1:52:09So you look up to those guys all the time, and now you're kind of in a different world.
- 1:52:14Shark Skulltender Evgeny Nabokov remembers the dominant Red Army teams of his native country,
- 1:52:19but he has a hard time narrowing it down to one favorite player.
- 1:52:22Like I never had one NHL player I really look up to because we've been too far away and we had our own good players.
- 1:52:30So we look up to them all the time.
- 1:52:32Toronto's Thomas Caberley also grew up half a world away from the NHL, but he had no trouble finding a role model.
- 1:52:38It was always Raymond Bourque from Boston, and I liked the way he played.
- 1:52:42He just blocked in front, rebounds, go on, rebar!
- 1:52:45He was an offensive guy, and that's kind of the way I play.
- 1:52:48At the beginning, there were most likely the players from Czech, and when I was 15 or 16, I started to watch Raymond afterwards.
- 1:52:56From a former Boston captain to the current one, Zdeno Čaracic's a couple of contemporaries as his favorites.
- 1:53:02I really didn't have anybody, any one person I could take and say, OK, I want to be like this guy.
- 1:53:07But later on when you're playing and you're around the league, obviously you watch other players.
- 1:53:12And I always admire Niklaus Lindstrom and Scott Niedermeyer and the way they play, how effective they are.
- 1:53:18Across the jar, let's circle, a drive and he scores!
- 1:53:21We really didn't have that many coverages back home from the NHL.
- 1:53:25And later on when I became older, you know, around 15, 16, 17 as a teenager, then we started having some coverage of NHL.
- 1:53:33And that was the time when Jeremy Yarger came in, Bobby Holley, Robert Weichel, Frank Musil.
- 1:53:39And you always follow those guys and try to know how they were doing.
- 1:53:43Among the North Americans, one name is mentioned more than all the others combined.
- 1:53:47I always looked at Gretzky, obviously.
- 1:53:49When I was a kid, I wanted to be Gretzky, you know, he was my idol.
- 1:53:52I grew up in Edmonton, so definitely Wayne was my favorite player growing up.
- 1:53:56Back to Gretzky, shot, score!
- 1:53:58There it is!
- 1:54:00Career goal number 802!
- 1:54:03I got to play with him in New York for two years, so that was a special feat.
- 1:54:06It's kind of like coming here, like you said, you know, playing with all the best players.
- 1:54:09And you know, you even look up to a lot of these guys, you know, that are such talented guys.
- 1:54:13And we're just all here looking to have fun and have a good game.
- 1:54:16Mark Savard of the Bruins echoes a common sentiment shared by Chicago defenseman Duncan Key.
- 1:54:21I think I looked up to some of the D-men I'm here with, Lidstrom and Fronger and Edemeyer.
- 1:54:27And they're all on my team today, so that's a good thing.
- 1:54:30I don't want them on the other team.
- 1:54:32It's pretty neat seeing them and watching them on TV growing up as a kid.
- 1:54:36And now you're out here playing with them, and hopefully I can learn a thing or two from them this weekend.
- 1:54:42For some, the teams they followed as kids were more important than individual players.
- 1:54:46For Anaheim Scott and Edemeyer, it was anyone but Edmonton.
- 1:54:49It was fun to watch Edmonton, mind you, everyone.
- 1:54:51I was an Oilers fan where I grew up, so I always felt I had to cheer for the other team.
- 1:54:55So I was with the Islanders and the Flames and all the teams playing against them.
- 1:54:58But it was great. It was entertaining, a lot of fun to be part of that whole thing.
- 1:55:01It is all over! The Edmonton Otters have won the Stanley Cup!
- 1:55:06I grew up in St. Albert, just outside Edmonton, so I watched a lot of Oilers.
- 1:55:09Graff here, Mark Messier, I love Mark Messier, everybody loved Wayne Gretzky.
- 1:55:14Calgary's Jerome McGinley followed the home team, as did Bruin's goalie Tim Thomas.
- 1:55:18I looked up to Flint generals in the IHL because they're my hometown team and that's who I watched.
- 1:55:23Rick Nichol and Steve Penny were there, my two favorite goalies.
- 1:55:27Steve Penny played for Montreal for a little while and Rick Nichol played for L.A. Kings.
- 1:55:31I did watch the Red Wings, we got Hockey Night in Canada up where I lived in Michigan.
- 1:55:35So I watched the NHL, but my heroes were the hometown guys that I could see in person on a regular basis.
- 1:55:44And who knows, maybe in 15 years or so we can do a similar feature
- 1:55:48and we'll hear those players say how they looked up to the likes of Rick Nash,
- 1:55:52Jerome McGinley and Alexander Ovechkin.
- 1:55:55Right now after two periods of play at the 56th NHL All-Star Game,
- 1:55:59the Eastern Conference with a two-goal advantage over the West, it's 5-3.
- 1:56:03And we have highlights coming up next from Westwood 1, this is NHL Radio.

- 1:58:09Welcome back to Phillips Arena, side of the 56th NHL All-Star Game.
- 1:58:13East in front of the West 5-3, highlights in a moment, but first let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:58:18This is Westwood 1, your home for NHL Radio.
- 1:58:22W-E-L-E Norman Beach.
- 1:58:24They may try to stop us.
- 1:58:26The alternative to Oxtease.
- 1:58:28Daytona's real news, real talk.
- 1:58:34Welcome back to Phillips Arena, Joe Tolleson along with Sam Rosen, Bill Clement and Billy Jaffe
- 1:58:38as we are through 40 minutes of hockey.
- 1:58:40And in the first period is when the Eastern Conference took a 5-1 advantage,
- 1:58:46but Rick Nash had the fastest goal in All-Star Game history from the start of the game.
- 1:58:51Just 12 seconds in, he scored unassisted, but then the East rattled off five unanswered goals.
- 1:58:56Well then the second period started.
- 1:58:58Teams back and forth through the first part of that second period of action,
- 1:59:02but right before we got to the 10-minute mark, well, Rick Nash had it again.
- 1:59:07Cleared out of the zone, lead for Nash, breaks to the net.
- 1:59:10Nash in, fake score.
- 1:59:12Oh, Rick Nash.
- 1:59:15He has got high-light goals.
- 1:59:18He's had him during the regular season, and that was another one here in the All-Star Game.
- 1:59:23It's 5-2 in favor of the East, and Rick Nash has both Western Conference goals.
- 1:59:29He was sprung free by Pavel Datsuk to score the 9-34 mark,
- 1:59:33joining Alexander Ovechkin with two goals in this game.
- 1:59:37Then the West would go in front, or rather would pull another one back on Scott Niedermeyer's
- 1:59:41second ever All-Star goal at the 15-08 mark from Joe Thornton,
- 1:59:45who got his first All-Star point of his career, and also Henrik Sedin.
- 1:59:49So the West had closed the gap to 5-3, but then we went inside the final minute of the second period,
- 1:59:55and not once, but twice Ilya Kovalchuk had chances to extend the East advantage.
- 2:00:01Vita Sivar, just fast blocked by Fadil, bats it up in the air, out in front, quick shot,
- 2:00:05save, Nabokov, and Kovalchuk follows to the ice in disbelief.
- 2:00:14Back forward, Eric Stahl takes it away, fires it out to Kovalchuk,
- 2:00:17up the middle, he's got a breakaway to the net to get Nabokov, save Nabokov,
- 2:00:22great save as the period comes to an end.
- 2:00:26Kovalchuk just threw his stick down on the ice, he doesn't know what to do.
- 2:00:30Maybe he should just try chewing on it because he has been robbed at least four times in this game.
- 2:00:36Well, Evgeny Nabokov, one of those three players we talked about from that bumper round of the 94 draft to find goalies,
- 2:00:44the ninth round, Evgeny Nabokov was the 219th overall pick in the draft.
- 2:00:50Well, he stopped all eight shots by the Eastern Conference in that second period of action.
- 2:00:56The West fired off 18 shots in that second period, they've got 31 for the game compared to a total of 24 for the East,
- 2:01:03but the East has the advantage, five to three, but the third period is coming up,
- 2:01:09and you know what, that third goalie from that ninth round of 94, he'll be a net for the Eastern Conference,
- 2:01:14it's Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins who went 217th overall, just as a point of fact.
- 2:01:20Kimo Tiemann of the Philadelphia Flyers, the lowest drafted player in this all-star game
- 2:01:25at 250th, but Marten Saint-Louis was signed as a free agent, wasn't drafted at all, and he is here as well.
- 2:01:32Well, we still have 20 minutes to go, so stay tuned.
- 2:01:34Third period is just around the corner, East leading the West five to three.
- 2:01:38You're listening to NHL Radio on Westwood 1.

- 2:04:16My guests today are columnist Trent Patterson and economist Marianne Molina.
- 2:04:20Marianne, what do you think about Nick Punter admitting using Southwest Airlines to be more productive?
- 2:04:25I think productivity is a good thing, Jay.
- 2:04:27Everybody is entitled to use whatever competitive edge they can.
- 2:04:30Trent, I completely disagree.
- 2:04:32What about all the business people who don't fly Southwest and therefore aren't as productive?
- 2:04:36Tell me, who's their advocate, Marianne?

- 2:04:41You're now free to be more productive.
- 2:04:45Back at Phillips Arena as we get set for the third period of this NHL All-Star game.
- 2:04:49Let's first go down to Billy Jaffe, and he's with the man who has the first shutout period of hockey for a goaltender since 2002.
- 2:04:56Billy?
- 2:04:57Okay, thanks a lot, Joe.
- 2:04:58With the goaltender of Genny Nabokov just outside the Western Conference Room
- 2:05:02you faced a lot of shots near the end of the period, and you robbed fellow countryman Ilya Kovalchuk there.
- 2:05:08You're in his head. You're in it right now. He doesn't know what to do.
- 2:05:12I know, but the first one I think I just got lucky.
- 2:05:15I knew that pretty much the top shelf was open, so I just tried to react on the play, and I got lucky that the puck went to my glove.
- 2:05:23And in a breakaway, I just tried to stack my pads. I thought it was going to be a highlight goal or a highlight save.
- 2:05:30It was a highlight save.
- 2:05:31I saw you guys before the game talking, you and the other fellow countrymen.
- 2:05:35Were there any bets going back and forth, gentleman bets going back and forth, who was going to get the most points or no saves?
- 2:05:40No, but the early upset was my poke check last night, so they said that they will get me back.
- 2:05:45The poke check you're talking about in the All-Star Skills Competition?
- 2:05:48Yes.
- 2:05:49That was interesting. I want to know about your team right here, the San Jose Sharks.
- 2:05:53You've been playing obviously every game that you're just about.
- 2:05:55But you don't seem to be tired whatsoever. Physically, the best shape you've ever been in your life?
- 2:06:00You know, when your team is playing well in front of you most of the nights, it's not that hard to go out and play.
- 2:06:07Obviously, we do have a good team, and I enjoy every second of it and try to have fun with it.
- 2:06:12Well, you've had a lot of fun tonight. Congratulations on a great second period. Have fun watching the third.
- 2:06:16Thank you.
- 2:06:17All right, Evgeny Nabokov down here, back upstairs. Sam Rosen.
- 2:06:20Thank you, Billy. Sam Rosen along with Bill Clement, Billy Jaffe, Joe Tolleson.
- 2:06:26The West All-Stars are already on the ice. They will have Manny Legacy of the St. Louis Blues in goal.
- 2:06:33And then the third period, the East coming out onto the ice, will have Tim Thomas of the Boston Bruins in goal.
- 2:06:40And you heard from Evgeny Nabokov on his save. Certainly, we start now to think of MVPs.
- 2:06:47Two goals in the game for Alex Ovechkin in the East. A goal and an assist for Brian Campbell,
- 2:06:53the defenseman of the Buffalo Sabres for the East, and Rick Nash for the West has two goals in the game.
- 2:06:59It's wide open. Six players have two points, but only two of them have two goals. You mentioned Nash and Ovechkin.
- 2:07:06I'm thinking the hat trick is going to be really strong here. I would ask Ovechkin can get it done.
- 2:07:11I agree with you there. They added a couple of shots to the Western total in the second period.
- 2:07:17They had 20 shots on goal. Thomas Rokun, who gave up two, had a terrific period, stopping 18 of 20 shots.
- 2:07:25Goaltending has been fantastic. And if you're named MVP, you win the keys to a new vehicle.
- 2:07:33And they even throw in the Dodge Journey to fit the keys.
- 2:07:37Nice. You wouldn't want them in the parking lot trying to click open and see which car opens up.
- 2:07:45Which one did I win?
- 2:07:47Underway, third period. Jason Arnott playing it back into his own zone to Scott Niedemeier.
- 2:07:53Now up to center, Corey Perry. Ahead for Ryan gets laughing in the East zone. Down the middle.
- 2:07:57Left side to Arnott, one-handed shot, stop. Arnott recovers the rebound.
- 2:08:01Up to the right point to Scott Niedemeier. Down the boards to Corey Perry.
- 2:08:05Perry's pass blocked by Andre Markov. Markov finds the puck, gets it to Evgeny Malkin.
- 2:08:10Now five Russians on the ice. Five Russians on the ice. John Paddock putting all five Russians out together.
- 2:08:18And a quick shot. Score by Ryan Getslap. He took it away, skated in alone on the left side.
- 2:08:26And beat Tim Thomas. And the East lead is down to five to four.
- 2:08:31And Sam, there are so few players in the world that can pick a spot like Ryan Getslap did.
- 2:08:37He cut in on a sharp angle on his off wing, split two defensemen.
- 2:08:41And there was just a tiny bit of daylight under the armpit of Tim Thomas.
- 2:08:46And Ryan Getslap made it look like it was a hole that was four feet wide.
- 2:08:51Getslap, terrific player. His first all-star goal. We go downstairs to Billy Jaffe on the bench.
- 2:08:58And I'm with John Paddock right now, guys. John Paddock, you put out five Russians out there.
- 2:09:03And they're kind of chuckling that they got scored on coming up. Did it backfire?
- 2:09:07Well, we'll give them one more chance here for the timeout.
- 2:09:11And I don't know if it backfired. I don't know whether it mattered or not.
- 2:09:13They backfired. They wanted the opportunity to play together.
- 2:09:15And this is all about having a good time. Great watching those guys chuckle coming off.
- 2:09:20Good luck in the third period, coach. Thank you. Back upstairs, guys.
- 2:09:23And thank you, Billy. Thanks to John Paddock. Tim Thomas made two good saves.
- 2:09:27You bet.
- 2:09:28Got a rebound save on Dion Fanoff after a good shot by Sean Harkoff.
- 2:09:33Now it's Henrik Sedin in the right circle. Back pass left point, Nick Lindstrom.
- 2:09:37Back the other way to Andrzej Kopitar, right circle. Skates toward the net. In front, save Thomas.
- 2:09:42And he's got the puck. Good stop by Tim Thomas.
- 2:09:46The fourth goal, Getslap from Chobanovsky at 41 seconds of the third period,
- 2:09:53cutting the East League to five to four.
- 2:09:55That sandwich really interesting from what Billy was talking, when Billy was talking to John Paddock,
- 2:09:59the players asked him if they could go out and play together.
- 2:10:03That wasn't a John Paddock idea. The players had to.
- 2:10:06And the East comes to center. Jason Spetz across the line. Left side in the left corner.
- 2:10:13Wides it behind the net. Martez Salloui.
- 2:10:15The East led five to one down to the first period. They haven't scored since then.
- 2:10:19And the West has cut it down to five, four. Now a breakaway for Rick Nash to the net on the backhand.
- 2:10:25He scores! What a goal by Rick Nash! He did it again!
- 2:10:30It's a hat trick for Rick Nash and the West is tied at five.
- 2:10:35The burst of speed. This looks so much like the goal, the second goal that he scored in the game,
- 2:10:40because he split the D-men, came in alone from the blue line in, and again used his reach.
- 2:10:45Tim Thomas thought that he might pull it to the forehand. Instead, Nash let his body go to the forehand side.
- 2:10:52The stick was way over to the backhand side. His hands were close together, and he chipped a top shelf over Tim Thomas.
- 2:10:59Thomas was not a happy camper. He grabbed the puck, threw it out of the net, smacked his stick on the ice.
- 2:11:04And several fans have thrown hats onto the ice. Not a whole lot, but maybe a dozen or so have come out on the ice.
- 2:11:11But you want to bring a spare hat to an event like this, because you don't want to throw the brand new All-Star,
- 2:11:1656 All-Star game hat that you just bought, do you? No. No, you bring a spare one in your back pocket.
- 2:11:22Put the brand in there. That is the 15th hat trick in All-Star game history.
- 2:11:29And Rick Nash with a brilliant performance tonight. And the West has come from five-one down to tie it five-five.
- 2:11:37Later on, we'll tell you about tonight's defender of the game brought to you by the U.S. Navy.
- 2:11:42Accelerate your life to learn how you can experience the adventure of a lifetime.
- 2:11:46Visit Navy.com or call 1-800-USA-NAVY.
- 2:11:51By the way, Sam, the five Russians that played on that ship for the East were Alex Ovechkin of the Caps,
- 2:11:56Ilya Kovalchuk of the Thrasher's, Ganchar of the Penguins, Malcom of the Penguins, and Andrei Markov of the Canadians.
- 2:12:02Right. Nice group. Now the West coming back to tie. It's five-five, early third period.
- 2:12:10Taemin and across the line, left side into the West zone, his pass off the skate of Pronger all the way back in the East zone.
- 2:12:16Campbell back to get it, pressured by Jerome McGinla.
- 2:12:20Campbell swings it up the board to Martez San Luis.
- 2:12:23On the Tampa Bay Lightning, slides it ahead, intercepted by Chris Pronger.
- 2:12:27Pronger to Duncan Keith, who got the assist on the dash goal.
- 2:12:32So Duncan Keith of the Chicago Blackhawks, his first all-star game, gets an assist.
- 2:12:37The puck put into the crease by Dachuk, who was covered by Thomas, kept in by the West.
- 2:12:42Rick Nash, Nash, down low with Ginla, in front, missed by Duncan Keith, and it's brought out by Spezza.
- 2:12:48Cross-ice, passed. Eric Stahl all the way down. Out to play behind the net.
- 2:12:53His manly legacy is passed, taken away by Stahl, put it in the crease, legacy knocked it away, and out of the zone comes Jerome McGinla, pull the West.
- 2:13:01White side of the blue line in the East zone, he's stopped on a poke check by Markoff.
- 2:13:05Across to Thornton, down low, shot off the side of the net by Henrikh Sedin.
- 2:13:10Thornton, who's Sedin behind the net.
- 2:13:13Markoff trying to pin him there to feed to Thornton, carries behind the net, pass intercepted by Markoff for the East.
- 2:13:19Andrei Markoff, up ahead, Staino Chara, now right side, it's brought across by Mike Richards.
- 2:13:26Left side feed, Marion Hulsa, also checked by Niedemeier, puts a bouncer to the side of the net.
- 2:13:31Hulsa has it back, in front, Gomez, shot off escape of Jovanovski.
- 2:13:36Back out to Chara off his stick in the East, the West breaks out.
- 2:13:40Up the left side, Gabrik, in the left circle, drop pass to Niedemeier, to the net, down low, Gabrik,
- 2:13:45through the goal line, it was cleared away by Thomas, shot by Jovanovski, deflects in the corner.
- 2:13:51Played by Joe Thornton, back pass to Niedemeier, Niedemeier in the right circle, feed to Sedin.
- 2:13:57Sedin drops it off to Thornton, back to Sedin, side of the circle, pass in front, broken up by Chara.
- 2:14:02Out to Hulsa, two on one with Gomez, across the line, feed to Gomez, left side, back to Hulsa, he scores!
- 2:14:09The local hero, the Atlanta Thrasher's Marion Hulsa, makes it 6-5 for the East, off a nice pass from Scott Gomez.
- 2:14:24And Hulsa couldn't have picked a better guy to go in on a two on one with than Scott Gomez of the New York Rangers,
- 2:14:30because Gomez can just tee it up perfectly.
- 2:14:34Hulsa dished to Gomez, and you had to figure that Gomez wasn't going to shoot, he's just that kind of player.
- 2:14:38He'd rather dish than shoot. He had to thread the needle through a set of legs to get it back to Hulsa,
- 2:14:44one timer, and Hulsa's on the board.
- 2:14:47So the East regains the lead, it's 6-5, and a very happy Marion Hulsa, made the crowd very happy.
- 2:14:57The West comes back in, down the left side on it, into the left circle, offensive zone, centers it,
- 2:15:02and it's a little bit of a shift away from Nick Lindstrom, played by Malkin, out to Ovechkin, Ovechkin across the line,
- 2:15:08pulls up, cross-ice for Brian Campbell off his skate, overskates the puck, it's out in front, taken back by Kovalchuk,
- 2:15:14centers to Ovechkin, and it's shot to Flickett away, by Fennov, and his shot goes over the top.
- 2:15:21Now, four Russians and Brian Campbell on the ice for the East.
- 2:15:25Malkin, Ovechkin, Kovalchuk, and Gantjar, Brian Campbell is the other defenseman.
- 2:15:32And a pass off the stick of Malkin, almost a bad pass by the West, and they come out the center.
- 2:15:37Up the left side, Jason Arnott, left circle, cross-ice feed, down low, Gitzlaff chipped it wide,
- 2:15:43Gitzlaff to Fennov, who scores!
- 2:15:45Dion Fennouk of the Calgary Flames has tied it at six off a nice pass from Ryan Gitzlaff.
- 2:15:57Gitzlaff can make so many things happen, big, strong, vision, patience,
- 2:16:02puck popped out to Gitzlaff at the side of the net, there was kind of a scramble.
- 2:16:06Dion Fennouk's left skate, now remember, he's a defenseman, his left skate was actually in the paint
- 2:16:11when he got the pass from Gitzlaff, and he just had to tap it in a wide open cage.
- 2:16:16So the West comes right back, we are 5-10 gone by in the third period, and it's a 6-6 game.
- 2:16:25Around the net in the West zone, Chris Bronger lost long pass,
- 2:16:28tipped by Alfredson, picked up by Kopitart from the West, down the right side, into the right corner,
- 2:16:33Kopitart stops, centers, tipped, save!
- 2:16:37Nice tip in front by Sean Harcock, clearing a test, tipped in by Duncan Keat,
- 2:16:41into the right corner to Kopitart, checked there by Cabrales, and the puck taken away by Alfredson.
- 2:16:47Alfredson skates ahead, checked from behind by Kopitart, now Alfredson able to get out to the center,
- 2:16:53but lost it to Ribeiro, he gave it up to Tiemann, up ahead for LeCavillet, it's behind him,
- 2:16:58Savard chases it down behind the West net, Savard into the left circle, to Alfredson, left corner,
- 2:17:04up to the blue line, off the stick of Savard, out the center, he plays it cross-ice to Tiemann,
- 2:17:09back skates into his own zone, feeds Cabrales, left side, into the middle of Alfredson, across the West line,
- 2:17:15checked by Bronger, drops it back to Savard, winds it in deep behind the net to LeCavillet,
- 2:17:21LeCavillet turns, plays it up to boards, but nobody there, and it's out the center,
- 2:17:25Cabrales has it back, 6'20 gone by, third period tied, 6'6", off the left wing boards, Kopitart,
- 2:17:34into the offensive zone, center is missed by Niedemeier, brought the other way, Ovechkin to LeCavillet,
- 2:17:39right side of Savard, Savard right circle, into Ovechkin, a shot blocked, and that hurt,
- 2:17:45Ed Jovanovsky blocked it with his left skate, down low, it's off the stick of Savard,
- 2:17:51and taken away by the West, Scott Niedemeier, right side of Horkoff in center, cuts to the middle across the line,
- 2:17:57angles to the left circle, plays it down low to Kopitart, carries behind the East net,
- 2:18:02lifts it, trying to lift it over the net, and hit the back of the helmet of Tim Thomas,

- 2:26:48The west right now with a 7-6 lead.
- 2:26:51I'm standing next to Joe Thornton on the western conference bench.
- 2:26:54From the depths of a 5-1 deficit at the end of the first period,
- 2:26:58it seems like the game plan was give it to Rick Nash and it's working.
- 2:27:02Yeah, that was our inspirational talk in between first and second period.
- 2:27:06It was just Babs and Ron Wilson said just give it to Nash and let him score,
- 2:27:09and that's what we've been doing.
- 2:27:10All right, but now this is legit competition out here.
- 2:27:12I know guys are watching everything. They're being smart.
- 2:27:15But you guys want to win, don't you?
- 2:27:17Oh, we sure do. Yeah, obviously there's...
- 2:27:19You just don't want to get hurt, but you still want to win the game.
- 2:27:22There's a little bit of pride on the ice out here.
- 2:27:25So go work hard and hopefully win.
- 2:27:27All right, San Jose Shark star Joe Thornton back up to the other star, Sam Rosen.

- 2:29:35This time he made a beautiful play back to Eric Stahl, who had the stick in the right position, the gun was cocked.

- 2:40:12goal and an assist in crunch time and I still think Rick DiPietro did a great
- 2:40:17great job back in goal all the way back in the first period and Rick Nash with
- 2:40:22his hat trick even though it was in a losing cause generated highlight real
- 2:40:26material with at least two of them I think you could get on me on that yeah
- 2:40:30if you twisted my arm I could go with Rick Nash too so the festivities
- 2:40:37continue at center ice the from Dodge teams now lined up at their respective
- 2:40:45blue lines and from the and in a real good all-star game started off 12 seconds
- 2:40:51into the game Rick Nash scored a goal and the West had the early lead then the
- 2:40:56East for the next five goals and had a 5-1 lead and on the first and the West
- 2:41:01started coming back big-time big strong second period toward two goals third
- 2:41:06period came up tied the lead actually took the lead at 7-6 and looks like Eric
- 2:41:13stall is your MVP with two goals and an X and assist the star of the Carolina
- 2:41:20Hurricanes is the MVP he got the tying goal at 7-7 and assisted on the winning
- 2:41:26goal now mr. Teasley and now we go to ice level he's to build Jaffe he's
- 2:41:31trying to drive away with a car Billy car but they won't let me do that I'm
- 2:41:36with Mark Savard right now the guy who scored the game winning goal Billy off
- 2:41:40an assist from Eric stall the MVP of the game first of all this will talk about
- 2:41:45the goal it's big time you love the center you love the spotlight right
- 2:41:48there you found yourself with a puck on your stick with a few seconds left yeah
- 2:41:51that was my first shot on goal is actually kind of a saucer pass up top
- 2:41:54but you know I like my linemates play great tonight we had a lot of fun and
- 2:41:58it's something I'll never forget yeah I was gonna ask you what you thought of
- 2:42:01your first all-star experience it was awesome you know every moment I was out
- 2:42:04there the guys in the bench we had a great time I really enjoyed it and I'm
- 2:42:08glad everybody can try with me it has to mean that much more though doing it in
- 2:42:12Atlanta obviously with the Bruins right now but you came from the Atlanta
- 2:42:16grass is really where you broke out where you became a star NHL player does
- 2:42:20it mean that much more to you scoring that goal and winning having the East
- 2:42:23win here yeah the fans are great to me and when I was here and tonight you know
- 2:42:27they booed me yesterday but tonight they didn't know what to do so it's a lot of
- 2:42:30fun I got the winner and the guy you know all it to the guys we a lot of time
- 2:42:33well you always know they boo what they can't have thanks a lot
- 2:42:36congratulations on a great night thanks for having me all right Mark Savard down
- 2:42:39here back upstairs guys thank you Billy Mark Savard the was really developed into
- 2:42:44an outstanding player started developing his game with the Boston Bruins he
- 2:42:50started with the New York Rangers actually started developing his game
- 2:42:54with the Thrasher's as Billy said he began his career with the Rangers went
- 2:42:57to Calgary when he got to Atlanta he really started to blossom and now has
- 2:43:01become a full-fledged star with the Boston Bruins he's magical and easily
- 2:43:06one of the top five pastors in the game you could probably make the case that
- 2:43:09he's top three Joe Thornton comes to mind right away but
- 2:43:12Pavel Dotsuk as well but but Mark Savard is one of the classic passers in this
- 2:43:18sport doesn't get a lot of publicity doesn't seek a lot of publicity but when
- 2:43:23it comes right down to it when the puck is on his stick if you're on the ice
- 2:43:26with them you're a threat to score as long as Mark Savard has the puck on his
- 2:43:30stick and mr. Eric Stahl who was a bona fide star in this league we know that
- 2:43:35with the way he has played and helping Carolina win the Stanley Cup
- 2:43:39championship two years ago he is a big-time star and came up big in this
- 2:43:44game after having scored a goal early in the game in the first period he actually
- 2:43:50scored scored the first Eastern Conference goal he tied the game at
- 2:43:54seven at 1235 and then set up Savard for the game winners the guy that deserved
- 2:44:00better than he got in this hockey game was Ilya Kovalchuk yeah he had more
- 2:44:04good scoring chances than any player in the game and as it turned out it was a
- 2:44:09beautiful pass by Kovalchuk that ended up tying the game on the Eric Stahl goal
- 2:44:13but Ilya Kovalchuk with the chances that he had could have won a fleet of cars in
- 2:44:18this game as the MVP it just didn't happen for him tonight I thought the
- 2:44:21fans enjoyed it throughout the game it was great skating great plays up and
- 2:44:26down the ice good goaltending all around and I thought all in all a good all-star
- 2:44:31game thoroughly impressed Sam I the players take this more seriously than
- 2:44:36they have in the past they understand that it's about giving something to the
- 2:44:41fans and we have the best athletes in the world they are more responsible to
- 2:44:47their fans more giving to their fans and and our and our guys that give back to
- 2:44:51the sport in general they gave back a lot tonight I was thoroughly impressed
- 2:44:55with the game and as I said that last seven minutes of action before the
- 2:45:00winning goal was scored by Mark Savard that's as good as six or seven minutes
- 2:45:04stretch of hockey in an all-star game I've ever seen and the coaches got smart
- 2:45:07too when that Russian group didn't work out and gave up two goals they said hey
- 2:45:10enough of this we go back to our regular line yep the East was sinking quickly
- 2:45:15weren't they we had five men rushing unit and it just didn't work for them
- 2:45:19well real good all-star game once again the final score the East eight the West
- 2:45:25seven we'll come back to Atlanta for some final thoughts and wrap things up
- 2:45:30coming up next Joe Taliesin rejoins us you're listening to NHL radio on Westwood 1

- 2:49:07welcome back to the Phillips Arena in Atlanta Georgia the 56th NHL All-Star
- 2:49:16game going to the East in a thriller 8 to 7 our final score as the East gets
- 2:49:23the win and we weren't quite sure the things that were gonna happen that way
- 2:49:27Joe Tolleson with you along with Sam Rose and Bill Clement and Billy Jaffe and
- 2:49:31it's time now for radio replay we weren't sure it was gonna end up this way
- 2:49:34because before as they say your fanny hits the seat the Western Conference
- 2:49:39had jumped out in front then we are underway in the All-Star game of the
- 2:49:44West has it their own zone after center left side the Rick Nash of Columbus from
- 2:49:48the red line he gives it up into the East Zone
- 2:49:51there steals it goes to the net and scores!
- 2:49:55just like that Rick Nash 12 seconds into the game with a steal and a jump that
- 2:50:02beats the Pietro an unassisted goal for Rick Nash it not only was the fastest
- 2:50:07goal from the start of the game in All-Star history the fastest goal from
- 2:50:11the start of any period in All-Star history 12 seconds for Rick Nash the
- 2:50:16West was out in front but it didn't take long for the East to get that back back
- 2:50:20pass deflected away and out to center played by Eric Stahl of Carolina
- 2:50:24behind the back to Mark Savard his pass through to Baalton Baalton left wing side
- 2:50:29for Brian Campbell in front Eric Stahl shoots and scores!
- 2:50:34Goal minute 20 seconds into the game the East is tied it on a goal by Carolina
- 2:50:39Hurricane Eric Stahl Brian Campbell and Evgeny Malkin with the assist and stall
- 2:50:45at the minute 20 mark that was the second fastest two goals from the start
- 2:50:50of the game in All-Star history the fastest was 37 seconds back in 1970 but
- 2:50:55the East had evened it up 1-1 with the West Andre Markov Alexander Ovechkin
- 2:51:00Brian Campbell would all score for the East to put them out in front 4 to 1 and
- 2:51:05then before the end of the first period while Alex the Great would get his
- 2:51:08second the East skating very well getting a lot of chances right side
- 2:51:11Gansha into the middle Spetsa down low set away in front of Ovechkin scores!
- 2:51:16Wow what a puck movement great passing and Ovechkin the finisher with his
- 2:51:23second goal of the game it's 5-1 the East leads it! That was sick!
- 2:51:29Marta San Luis and Jason Spetsa with the assists on the goal by Alexander Ovechkin
- 2:51:35pretty tic-tac-toe play at the 1749 mark and that's how the first period went in
- 2:51:39with the East out in front by a 5-1 count Rick DiPietro stopped 12 of the 13
- 2:51:45shots he faced in that first period for the Eastern Conference was the early
- 2:51:49front-runner for MVP but it was fitting that Rick Nash and Eric Stahl got the
- 2:51:53opening goals in this game that was just a harbinger of things to come because we
- 2:51:58got into the second period the West was trying to see if they could climb back
- 2:52:01into this well who else to turn to? Cleared out of the zone lead for Nash breaks
- 2:52:06to the net! Nash in fake scores!
- 2:52:09Oh Rick Nash! He's got highlight goals! He's had him during the regular season and that was another one here in the
- 2:52:18all-star game it's 5-2 in favor of the East and Rick Nash has both Western
- 2:52:24Conference goals. Came at the 934 mark in the second period as he was sent loose
- 2:52:29by Pabbel, Datsuko had the single assist, Scott Niedermeyer would get another one
- 2:52:34back for the Western Conference to make it 5-3 at the 1508 mark, Jill Thornton
- 2:52:38got his first all-star point and so did Henrik Sedin as he was appearing in his
- 2:52:42first all-star game and the second period was drawing to a close and who
- 2:52:48else to bring the home crowd to their feet but their hometown guy Ilya
- 2:52:53Koblciuk. Vita Savard is fast blocked by Pabbel, bats it up in the air out in front, quick shot!
- 2:52:58Oh save! Novakov! And Koblciuk falls to the ice in disbelief!
- 2:53:07That is our US Postal Service save of the game. You can save with the US Postal
- 2:53:13Service because they offer affordable shipping options with no hidden surcharges.
- 2:53:17The US Postal Service save of the game goes to Evgeny Novakov and we had to
- 2:53:22pick between two Novakov saves because right before the end of the second
- 2:53:26period Koblciuk came out on a breakaway and he got stopped by Novakov on that one
- 2:53:30as well as he had the first shutout period by a goalie in the all-star game
- 2:53:34since 2002 in Los Angeles when Nikolai Habibullin did it for the World Stars.
- 2:53:39Novakov stopping all eight shots that he faced for the Western Conference and the
- 2:53:44Western Conference had 20 shots in that second period. Pretty admirable
- 2:53:50performance by Thomas Volcun if you think about it as he made 18 saves in
- 2:53:53that period so it was off to the third and the West well only down by two now
- 2:53:57after 40 minutes of hockey trying to get back into it. Ryan Getslap making his
- 2:54:00all-star game debut he got a goal and that made it five to four and then it
- 2:54:05was time for the West to tie it up and well we'll give you a guess at who got
- 2:54:09that tying goal you know what we'll give you three the first two don't count.
- 2:54:12East led five to one down to the first period they haven't scored since then and
- 2:54:16the West has cut it down to five four and now a breakaway for Rick Nash to the
- 2:54:21net on the backhand he scores! What a goal by Rick Nash! He did it again!
- 2:54:27It's a hat-trick for Rick Nash and the West is tied it at five! And that's why we
- 2:54:33gave you three guesses three guesses for the three goals by Rick Nash as he was
- 2:54:38sprung free on that one by Jerome Agenla and Nash with the hat-trick the
- 2:54:4215th in all-star game history the first since Joe Sackett in 2004 we'll have
- 2:54:48more on that hat-trick in just a bit. We mentioned the assist by Jerome Agenla
- 2:54:52still looking for his first all-star goal and after Marion Hossa put the East
- 2:54:57back in front well it was Dion Faneu for the Calgary Flames the defenseman for
- 2:55:02Calgary he's played in two all-star games he's gotten two goals so he's gonna
- 2:55:05give a little more stick to Jerome Agenla when they get back to Alberta and
- 2:55:08that tied the game up at six and then the West well they were finally able to
- 2:55:13jump out in front. Alfredson stays with him Gavrik holds on in the puck turns
- 2:55:18comes down the boards beats to Sadeen to Gavrik who scores!
- 2:55:25And for the first time since the opening minute of play in the game the West has
- 2:55:33the lead they scored the first goal of the game they've been coming back ever
- 2:55:38since it's now seven to six with nine oh three to go in the third period. Gavrik
- 2:55:44from Henrik Sadeen at the 1057 mark and the East suddenly found themselves
- 2:55:49trailing they didn't trail for long at the beginning of the game Nash scored
- 2:55:5312 seconds in and it was Erik Stahl scoring well at the 120 mark so that was
- 2:55:58just a minute and eight seconds later took just a little bit longer for the
- 2:56:03East to tie the game there well and it was the same guy who got the job done
- 2:56:06right side of Charah Charah worked it in to Savard now the Erik Stahl two on one
- 2:56:11down low cross sights Stahl gets it back he scores!
