Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Will Royce Lewis get sent down? Plus, a Brewers series breakdown
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Royce Lewis's struggles intensify. The Twins lose two out of
- 0:05Speaker 1: three against the cross state rival Milwaukee Brewers, and they
- 0:10Speaker 1: welcome to Houston Astros starting tonight. It's Monday, May eighteenth.
- 0:14Speaker 1: This is Twins Citi's Territory You or Minnesota Twins podcast
- 0:17Speaker 1: here on the Foul Territory Network. I'm Zach Pearce of
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Athletic, joined as always by Dan Hayes, the Athletics,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins beat writer, and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer
- 0:26Speaker 1: and former Minnesota Twin with a nice hat today as
- 0:29Speaker 1: well at Tyler as the Olympics editor. I approve of
- 0:32Speaker 1: that hat. But we will start today with the topic
- 0:35Speaker 1: that is sort of taking all the oxygen in Twinsland
- 0:38Speaker 1: right now. Dan Royce Lewis had a couple of day
- 0:42Speaker 1: reset a week or so ago that does not appear
- 0:46Speaker 1: to have paid a lot of dividends. His struggles have
- 0:48Speaker 1: continued at the plate mightily and also in the field
- 0:51Speaker 1: that we saw on full display this weekend against Milwaukee.
- 0:55Speaker 2: Yeah, striking out more than ever right now. And like
- 0:58Speaker 2: this is a guy that first career struck out twenty
- 1:00Speaker 2: two percent of the time, always has a good grasp
- 1:03Speaker 2: of the strike zone. Even before the IL was walking
- 1:06Speaker 2: more than ever and not striking out very much. Since
- 1:08Speaker 2: he's come off the IL, sixty eight at bats, twenty
- 1:11Speaker 2: five strikeouts, he's really struggling and and it's surfacing in
- 1:18Speaker 2: ways that are hard not to see. You mentioned the field.
- 1:23Speaker 2: On Saturday night, he whiffed on a in and in
- 1:26Speaker 2: double playball cost him a run, and that ended up
- 1:30Speaker 2: being a big run because it was the one on
- 1:32Speaker 2: one run loss eventually, and that you know, tied the game.
- 1:35Speaker 2: They were up one nothing early after Trevor Lawn come
- 1:38Speaker 2: run and gave it right back. But then yesterday on Sunday,
- 1:43Speaker 2: struck out the first two times. So first time he
- 1:45Speaker 2: came up right after vic Carottine got hit by a
- 1:48Speaker 2: pitch to load the bases, and Robert Gasser, who was
- 1:51Speaker 2: making his debut, was a little bit all over the place.
- 1:55Speaker 2: His twenty twenty six debut was a little bit all
- 1:58Speaker 2: over the place, and he through Royce ten pitches in
- 2:01Speaker 2: that bat, and Royce swung at nine of them, followed
- 2:04Speaker 2: a bunch of them off and then eventually chase the
- 2:05Speaker 2: pitch out of the zone and like you could see
- 2:08Speaker 2: it coming. And then the second time up, Gasser walks
- 2:12Speaker 2: the guy in front of him and hits Kratini again.
- 2:15Speaker 2: Maybe I'm getting the order on those two. Maybe he
- 2:17Speaker 2: came up with the bas's load the first time and
- 2:19Speaker 2: it was a walk and a hit batter, and then
- 2:21Speaker 2: the second time was just a hit batter, and he
- 2:23Speaker 2: struck out on three pitches and the third one was,
- 2:25Speaker 2: you know, a foot over the top of the zone.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Third time he came up, he tried to bunt twice
- 2:32Speaker 2: for a base hit and fouled both those off. And
- 2:36Speaker 2: I know that third basement was playing back. I could
- 2:38Speaker 2: see Royce maybe trying to get something started, because sometimes
- 2:40Speaker 2: Riley's do Sometimes you can get yourself going just with
- 2:43Speaker 2: the hit. But you know right now he is not
- 2:47Speaker 2: getting himself going. It's it's a struggle, and it's certainly
- 2:51Speaker 2: worth asking is it time to give him the Matt
- 2:54Speaker 2: Wallner treatment and send him to Triple A just to
- 2:56Speaker 2: get right because it's piling up a lot, and especially
- 3:00Speaker 2: even after those comments he made, you know, it was
- 3:03Speaker 2: eighty he's had eight games since the reset and eight
- 3:06Speaker 2: games since he said, you know, they're trying to write
- 3:10Speaker 2: me off. They want me to struggle and so they
- 3:14Speaker 2: can write me off and maybe, you know, move on.
- 3:17Speaker 2: Like I don't know that he's in a great spot,
- 3:19Speaker 2: and so you know, the Twins are in a weird
- 3:22Speaker 2: spot where they don't have a lot of options right
- 3:24Speaker 2: now to bring him up. But it's certainly something that
- 3:26Speaker 2: has to be on their mind whether or not they
- 3:28Speaker 2: give him a chance to go and not worry about
- 3:31Speaker 2: results at the major league level, because it's it's not
- 3:33Speaker 2: going well right now at the major league level.
- 3:36Speaker 1: Lewis was two for eleven on the weekend, six strikeouts,
- 3:40Speaker 1: the two hits for singles, the tyler. The hitting struggles
- 3:44Speaker 1: have been going on all year. I think for some
- 3:47Speaker 1: reason that that botch double play that you mentioned Dan
- 3:50Speaker 1: is sticking in my head because he looked very uncomfortable
- 3:54Speaker 1: going after that ball. I don't know if he thought
- 3:55Speaker 1: maybe he was going to hit the lip between the
- 3:57Speaker 1: grass and the dirt and kind of had second thoughts
- 3:59Speaker 1: about how to play it, but it just it that
- 4:03Speaker 1: that was particularly striking for me to see the awkwardness
- 4:06Speaker 1: of the way he approached the ball. I guess what
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'm getting ahead for these others. What at what point
- 4:11Speaker 1: do you kind of look at a player who has
- 4:14Speaker 1: shown star potential in the past on your own team
- 4:16Speaker 1: and kind of go ooh, I don't know if this
- 4:18Speaker 1: is working out.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's definitely there. The signs are there. You know,
- 4:24Speaker 3: you got to take what's being shown to you. And
- 4:27Speaker 3: you know he's had his struggles. You know he's tried
- 4:29Speaker 3: to get out of it, but you know, just swing
- 4:31Speaker 3: decisions and then you know, not squaring up pitches that
- 4:34Speaker 3: are in the zone, you know, swinging at pitches that
- 4:36Speaker 3: aren't close. You know, sometimes guys just need to take
- 4:40Speaker 3: the pressure off. You know, it's as simple as that.
- 4:42Speaker 3: You know, sometimes as the picture version of that is,
- 4:45Speaker 3: you know, you walk in guys and then when you
- 4:47Speaker 3: do throw a strike, it's right down the middle and
- 4:48Speaker 3: they hit it four hundred feet and it happens, and
- 4:51Speaker 3: it's something. Yet you just you need the only way
- 4:54Speaker 3: to step back is to go somewhere else for a minute. Unfortunately,
- 4:59Speaker 3: you know, I've never want to say you need to
- 5:00Speaker 3: send a guy down because it's you know, there's always
- 5:03Speaker 3: the lights at the end of the tunnel somewhere. But
- 5:05Speaker 3: you know, at this point, it's when the contributions aren't
- 5:10Speaker 3: close to outweighing, you know, the things that are happening
- 5:13Speaker 3: at this point. It makes for tough decisions for everybody.
- 5:16Speaker 3: And you know, like the end said, it's it's fortunate,
- 5:19Speaker 3: I think, to not have someone beating down the door
- 5:22Speaker 3: behind him. You know, he's getting a good runway to
- 5:24Speaker 3: work with. You know, it's it's just now when it
- 5:28Speaker 3: starts to spill over into all facets, that's when things
- 5:31Speaker 3: start to happen. You know, I've had teammates in the
- 5:32Speaker 3: past where it's like, okay, they're struggling a little bit,
- 5:35Speaker 3: but then like the big glaring things, you know, errors,
- 5:38Speaker 3: you know, just the even the mental stuff sometimes that
- 5:41Speaker 3: may pop up. You know, it's it gets to where
- 5:44Speaker 3: it's like, all right, we got to do something because
- 5:46Speaker 3: we're just running running into the wall over and over
- 5:48Speaker 3: again here. And like I said before, it's I think
- 5:51Speaker 3: everyone can use a reset now. And then you know,
- 5:53Speaker 3: some guys get a little dinged up and they go
- 5:55Speaker 3: on a d L you know, they get to go
- 5:57Speaker 3: in a rehab outing for a picture, you know, things
- 5:59Speaker 3: like that. You know, position guys get to go and
- 6:01Speaker 3: hit it a complex league or whatever it may be.
- 6:04Speaker 3: And you know, it's just you just need to go
- 6:06Speaker 3: face some competition with a little less lights, a little
- 6:09Speaker 3: less crowd noise, you know, and clear the mechanism, so
- 6:12Speaker 3: to speak. And you know, hopefully whatever ends up happening,
- 6:16Speaker 3: it goes smoothly and it's a quick fix. And you know,
- 6:20Speaker 3: because you pull for a guy like Royce, he's got
- 6:22Speaker 3: the energy, he wants to be the superstar he's got.
- 6:25Speaker 3: You know, the fans love him, the clubhouse loves him.
- 6:27Speaker 3: It's just, you know, you got to get his feet
- 6:29Speaker 3: back under him. And however that needs to happen, I'm
- 6:31Speaker 3: sure the twins are figuring out the best way possible
- 6:33Speaker 3: right now.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Hey, Duff, you'll remember this, I think, and and and
- 6:39Speaker 2: part of what makes this so complex is that Royce
- 6:41Speaker 2: has been the majors for a while now, right But
- 6:45Speaker 2: in twenty eighteen, I remember Mallitor saying to me, this
- 6:49Speaker 2: is the hardest thing I've ever had to do. And
- 6:51Speaker 2: that's when they sent Miguel's snowdown. He'd remember, he'd come
- 6:54Speaker 2: back from his broken fibula, and he came in to
- 6:57Speaker 2: camp out of shape because he basically had had to
- 6:59Speaker 2: re have all off season and just was not in
- 7:02Speaker 2: good shape and in June or July, they pulled the
- 7:05Speaker 2: plug and sent him to Florida and basically like reset it,
- 7:09Speaker 2: Like what like do you remember? How much do you
- 7:12Speaker 2: remember that? Especially because so good earlier in his career,
- 7:16Speaker 2: and yeah, that was a striking move.
- 7:19Speaker 3: He he went down, they said him, you out to
- 7:21Speaker 3: Fort Myers, and you know he was I think he
- 7:23Speaker 3: was doing literal like two days. You know, they were
- 7:26Speaker 3: like working him out in the mornings and then going
- 7:29Speaker 3: to play games, and you know it, sometimes it takes
- 7:32Speaker 3: that kind of shake. You know quote Wayne Graham I
- 7:36Speaker 3: played for it, Rice is you know, sometimes you need
- 7:38Speaker 3: to shake yourself. You know, it's it's you get comfortable.
- 7:43Speaker 3: You know, you're you're so talented for so long and
- 7:46Speaker 3: you can ride that wave and you work hard and
- 7:49Speaker 3: in your head you're doing everything correct, and then the
- 7:51Speaker 3: results just stop happening. And it's not that you aren't
- 7:55Speaker 3: trying or aren't working or don't care. It's just simply
- 7:58Speaker 3: that the game has adjusted to you and you now
- 8:01Speaker 3: have to make the overhaul and figure something out. And
- 8:05Speaker 3: that's kind of what it looks like at this point.
- 8:08Speaker 3: You know, Royce has made some changes and things like that,
- 8:10Speaker 3: but at this point it's like we need to address
- 8:12Speaker 3: some things, you know. You know, like Byron comes to
- 8:16Speaker 3: mind too. He tore up the minor leagues, just absolutely
- 8:19Speaker 3: destroyed everybody, you know, hitting balls five hundred feet. You know,
- 8:22Speaker 3: got to the big leagues, showed the flashes, boom boom,
- 8:25Speaker 3: and then the league adjusted, and then he readjusted. You know,
- 8:28Speaker 3: his swing, his swing from day one to now is
- 8:31Speaker 3: not even close to the same.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And that's part of baseball.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Go look at anyone ever, They've made adjustments and so
- 8:38Speaker 3: whatever that little tweak may be, it could be something
- 8:40Speaker 3: as small as, you know, lift your foot a little
- 8:43Speaker 3: less or move your hands here, or it could be
- 8:46Speaker 3: you know, change everything all together, you know, and hopefully
- 8:50Speaker 3: for everyone involved, like I said, hopefully it's an easy transition.
- 8:53Speaker 3: You know, it's something that they can go and break
- 8:55Speaker 3: down and actually have the environment in place to where
- 8:58Speaker 3: he can work on it without the pressure being there.
- 9:00Speaker 3: That's the hardest part is getting into games where it's
- 9:04Speaker 3: not living and dying by every swing. It's, hey, you
- 9:07Speaker 3: got two weeks here to like, we're just going to
- 9:10Speaker 3: make this feel comfy before we even worry about the results.
- 9:13Speaker 3: And you know, like I said, though, it's baseball is baseball,
- 9:16Speaker 3: and you've got to put nine guys out there. And
- 9:19Speaker 3: you know, if Royce is the best option, he's going
- 9:21Speaker 3: to keep getting it. So it's you know, it's it's one.
- 9:23Speaker 3: It's for better for worse. That's just where's at right now.

- 10:54Speaker 1: Back here on Twin Cities Territory Dan. Just to wrap
- 10:58Speaker 1: up with Royce Lewis, obviously the chatter among fans is
- 11:02Speaker 1: will he go to Triple A? Will he get the
- 11:04Speaker 1: Matt Waalner treatment? As you put it, What is the
- 11:07Speaker 1: likelihood in your estimation of that actually happening?
- 11:11Speaker 2: I mean as of today, I don't know, But I mean,
- 11:14Speaker 2: do I think that this is in the cards. I
- 11:16Speaker 2: think it's in the cards unless he shows some signs
- 11:19Speaker 2: so soon, and that might be before they go on
- 11:22Speaker 2: the road. But you know, we get the three games
- 11:25Speaker 2: with the astros coming up. The one thing that's complicating
- 11:28Speaker 2: this whole thing is that there's not like a ready
- 11:31Speaker 2: made answer at Triple A right now. The Twins want
- 11:34Speaker 2: Kayln Culpepper, who they drafted in twenty twenty four, to
- 11:36Speaker 2: develop long term. They don't want to rush into the majors,
- 11:39Speaker 2: even though he's shown a lot of positive signs and
- 11:41Speaker 2: it looks like he could be a really good major
- 11:43Speaker 2: league player. There's a large chasm between Triple A and
- 11:48Speaker 2: the majors, and we see it all the time. There's
- 11:51Speaker 2: just a big gap in talent. The pitching is not
- 11:53Speaker 2: nearly as good at Triple A, so you're not getting
- 11:56Speaker 2: challenged the way you would be in the big leagues.
- 11:58Speaker 2: But beyond that, I think Tristan Gray's wife is due,
- 12:03Speaker 2: which means he will probably go on the paternity list
- 12:05Speaker 2: very soon. And then you run into the issue and
- 12:09Speaker 2: Ryan Kradler came up for Matt Walner. Ryan Kreidler would
- 12:13Speaker 2: be a guy that would have put in for Royce Lewis.
- 12:16Speaker 2: So then it's all right if they if they need
- 12:20Speaker 2: Kreidler's playing some Mauthcoel right now. I played center field
- 12:22Speaker 2: a couple times this weekend. You would then need one
- 12:26Speaker 2: of Emmanuel Rodriguez Walker Jenkins to get healthier, Alan Roaden
- 12:30Speaker 2: to get healthy. None of them are are close on
- 12:32Speaker 2: that front, So it's like there's not an answer unless
- 12:34Speaker 2: you're going to Orland Arcia, who they have him at
- 12:37Speaker 2: triple A. He is tearing it up, you know, he's
- 12:41Speaker 2: he's hitting great at the plate, but it requires a
- 12:45Speaker 2: forty man spot and those aren't always easy to come by,
- 12:48Speaker 2: and maybe they don't want to make that move so
- 12:52Speaker 2: soon in the season. So I still think might be
- 12:55Speaker 2: a day or two, Like I think Royce has time,
- 12:59Speaker 2: But it's clearly getting to that point where if the
- 13:02Speaker 2: Twins had the options on the table, would they have
- 13:04Speaker 2: made the move. Maybe you know, they did it with
- 13:07Speaker 2: Matt Walner and you know Royce Lewis. It just looks
- 13:12Speaker 2: like a similar case at this point to Matt Waller.
- 13:14Speaker 2: So it could happen, but I don't anticipate that it's
- 13:19Speaker 2: just done at this point.
- 13:21Speaker 1: It's a good point that there's a was. The other
- 13:23Speaker 1: side of the of the issue, too, is who takes
- 13:25Speaker 1: a spot if you do move him down, and that
- 13:28Speaker 1: is not always such a clear cut decision.
- 13:30Speaker 6: No.
- 13:32Speaker 1: The Twins lost two out of three this weekend to
- 13:36Speaker 1: the Milwaukee Brewers. They dropped to twenty one and twenty six,
- 13:40Speaker 1: third place in the AL Central Cleveland starting to win
- 13:45Speaker 1: some games. They are four games over five hundred in
- 13:47Speaker 1: first place now. But besides Bryce Lewis, other things happened
- 13:53Speaker 1: this weekend. Too close one run losses and then a
- 13:56Speaker 1: one Obviously, I guess that's a you know, bit of
- 14:00Speaker 1: a run on to say, a close one run lost
- 14:02Speaker 1: then a one run win on Sunday. Great starting pitching performances.
- 14:06Speaker 1: The Twins were winning all three games. Actually tough to
- 14:08Speaker 1: say the bullpen blew it when the games were so low,
- 14:11Speaker 1: low scoring, but it was a good team and probably
- 14:16Speaker 1: about what was supposed to happen happened. Tyler.
- 14:19Speaker 3: Yeah, it's great across the board, you know, I mean,
- 14:22Speaker 3: Bailey give up a few hard hits, but we're in
- 14:24Speaker 3: all the games, and that's all you can ask for
- 14:26Speaker 3: from starting pitching, you know, pre lop through well, you know,
- 14:29Speaker 3: Joe did his thing. You know, that's that's all you
- 14:32Speaker 3: can ask for. And guys came in. You can see,
- 14:35Speaker 3: you know, guys are getting their tunnels. You know, they're
- 14:38Speaker 3: they're runways out of the bullpen.
- 14:40Speaker 2: There.
- 14:40Speaker 3: It feels like there's some kind of not a set
- 14:44Speaker 3: spot happening, but you can see guys coming into certain
- 14:47Speaker 3: spots now and you know it's guys, it's like I've
- 14:50Speaker 3: said a few times now, once you get at least
- 14:53Speaker 3: having a rough idea of like maybe the seventh or
- 14:55Speaker 3: eighth or the ninth, like you can start to kind
- 14:59Speaker 3: of settle in.
- 14:59Speaker 1: But you know, when.
- 15:00Speaker 3: You're having to get up in the third and then
- 15:04Speaker 3: kind of be ready until the ninth, like that wears
- 15:06Speaker 3: on you a little bit. And I'm sure some of
- 15:08Speaker 3: the guys out there are having to do that. But
- 15:10Speaker 3: you know, once you get those guys settled into some roles,
- 15:13Speaker 3: you know, some villas starts ticking up. I know there's
- 15:15Speaker 3: guys that are you're settling in moving from rotation to
- 15:18Speaker 3: to to one inning guys and you know, throwing back
- 15:22Speaker 3: to backs and getting you know, truly adapted to being
- 15:25Speaker 3: out there in the bullpen. And you know, it's it's
- 15:28Speaker 3: one as the season progresses, it's it's such a revolving
- 15:31Speaker 3: door out there sometimes that you know, you show up
- 15:33Speaker 3: to the field and you're like, who's in the pen today?
- 15:36Speaker 3: You know, I think they've made some roster moves this weekend.
- 15:38Speaker 3: You know, guys pitched and left and things like that.
- 15:41Speaker 3: So it's uh, you know, it's always fine by to
- 15:43Speaker 3: see your pants out there. But you know, having Joe
- 15:46Speaker 3: back and doing his thing and pre look seems to
- 15:49Speaker 3: be settling in pretty well.
- 15:51Speaker 2: You know.
- 15:52Speaker 3: It's those are good things. It's just you know, getting
- 15:54Speaker 3: the rest of that rotation healthy. I think that could
- 15:57Speaker 3: be huge, you know, it's it's and you can talk
- 16:00Speaker 3: about hitting a lot, but if you don't give up
- 16:02Speaker 3: a bunch of runs every day and you only need
- 16:04Speaker 3: to score a couple like that always helps, you know,
- 16:07Speaker 3: playing a lot of one roun ball games still, so
- 16:10Speaker 3: it's it's clear we're in the fight. It's just you know,
- 16:12Speaker 3: getting the last punch and to finish it sometimes.
- 16:17Speaker 2: Yes, Sunday Sunday's victory was good for the four point
- 16:20Speaker 2: three percenters to keep them firm and strong. But you
- 16:24Speaker 2: know Friday and Saturday where there was a lot of frustration.
- 16:28Speaker 2: You had the obstruction call. Uh yeah, you know that
- 16:32Speaker 2: was a crazy play.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Tell us about that, Dan, what exactly happened? What was
- 16:37Speaker 1: the contract there?
- 16:38Speaker 2: Okay, First, Andrew Morris comes in with a two run
- 16:42Speaker 2: or a one run lead. And Andrew Morris looked great
- 16:43Speaker 2: on Sunday. Andrew Morris had a little bit hiccup on Friday,
- 16:46Speaker 2: and that's what we expect from young guys being put
- 16:50Speaker 2: in this role in high leverage spots. But uh, he
- 16:53Speaker 2: had first and third and then the runner still second,
- 16:56Speaker 2: so second and third and nobody out in the eighth
- 16:59Speaker 2: and the twins are playing in and Brooksley made a
- 17:02Speaker 2: great play and he saw the lead runner way off
- 17:06Speaker 2: the bag and it was like he threw to third,
- 17:08Speaker 2: but it was such a fast play because you're throwing
- 17:11Speaker 2: behind the runner and royce Lewis was trying to get there.
- 17:14Speaker 2: Royce Lewis was doing all he could because you're playing in.
- 17:16Speaker 2: He has the backpedal find the bag and then also
- 17:20Speaker 2: oh yeah, catch the ball and.
- 17:21Speaker 6: Tagged the right correct and because that's the thing the
- 17:27Speaker 6: starting in twenty twenty four, there is more of an
- 17:29Speaker 6: emphasis on blocking the bag and like if any part
- 17:32Speaker 6: of you is blocking the bag before you have the ball,
- 17:34Speaker 6: which is what happened here.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Then you can get called for obstruction. So we saw
- 17:39Speaker 2: immediately Jordan Baker the play of the crew chief at
- 17:41Speaker 2: third base call out, call the out, but then also
- 17:46Speaker 2: signal to guys, and what the determination was was that
- 17:50Speaker 2: royce Lewis blocked. I think it's Jackson Curio's lane, and
- 17:55Speaker 2: so Jackson Curio slid into his foot. The throw got
- 17:58Speaker 2: there ahead of time, the blocking was not gonna Cheerio
- 18:03Speaker 2: was not getting back in time. Like, it didn't really
- 18:05Speaker 2: impact the play, But because it occurred, the umpire has
- 18:09Speaker 2: not only got to rule obstruction, the rule states that
- 18:13Speaker 2: you get to advance a base. So Jackson Turio, even
- 18:17Speaker 2: though he was retreating, was awarded home play, which is
- 18:21Speaker 2: just wild to me. And you know, Derek Shelton knew
- 18:27Speaker 2: he didn't have a winning argument there, but he got ejected. Anyways,
- 18:30Speaker 2: the thing I thought was really interesting postgame, Pat Murphy,
- 18:33Speaker 2: the Brewers manager, said we had a similar play last year.
- 18:37Speaker 2: We would be pissed too, and that play can't be
- 18:40Speaker 2: reviewed because it occurs in front of umpires on the infield,
- 18:45Speaker 2: anything that's in front of the umpires, right, And I
- 18:49Speaker 2: think that's the contention for everybody, is that now that
- 18:52Speaker 2: we're in this world of replay, should we be able
- 18:54Speaker 2: to should they make cases for select plays where it
- 18:58Speaker 2: plays in front of the empire can be reviewed because
- 19:02Speaker 2: it's driven, it only happens a little bit. Like Royce
- 19:05Speaker 2: said after the game, it's very rare. It probably won't
- 19:07Speaker 2: happen again this year. And it kind of bit them.
- 19:11Speaker 2: And then you know, Jake Bowers hit a double and
- 19:14Speaker 2: put the Brewers ahead three to two. And then the
- 19:17Speaker 2: Twins did a really good job, niftilely getting out of
- 19:19Speaker 2: it between Morris and Bonda. Even though it was again
- 19:22Speaker 2: second and third, no runners scored. They kept the score
- 19:25Speaker 2: three to two, and the Twins just couldn't score with
- 19:27Speaker 2: runners and hit with runners in scoring position. Lost that game,
- 19:31Speaker 2: but it was a crazy play, and and it you know, Saturday,
- 19:36Speaker 2: Twins lose another one run game. Runners in scoring position
- 19:41Speaker 2: bit them. James Outman was caught in between on a
- 19:44Speaker 2: really weird play where Austin Martin hit a blooper and
- 19:47Speaker 2: Chario came in and Outman didn't tag. He had this
- 19:50Speaker 2: great triple, had a chance to get them back to even,
- 19:54Speaker 2: and Chario made a diving play to take a hit
- 19:58Speaker 2: from Austin Martin. Outman was about six feet from the
- 20:02Speaker 2: base because he was caught in between. Like if it drops,
- 20:05Speaker 2: you know, got a score, but you don't know that
- 20:09Speaker 2: Cherio is gonna fall, and like Cherio has a great arms,
- 20:13Speaker 2: so I guess you can't anticipate tagging up there, but
- 20:17Speaker 2: it certainly optically was a tough look at that point
- 20:20Speaker 2: because when he did fall, men should be a tie game.
- 20:23Speaker 2: So weird weekend, lots of frustration for the Twins. It
- 20:29Speaker 2: was good that they did come away on Sunday with
- 20:31Speaker 2: the win.
- 20:34Speaker 1: We've talked before about the statistic that the Twins are
- 20:39Speaker 1: among the league leaders and great outings from their starting pitching,
- 20:43Speaker 1: depending on how you define it. We've been focusing on
- 20:46Speaker 1: five innings, are more pitched and two earned runs or
- 20:48Speaker 1: few were given up, and they had two more of
- 20:50Speaker 1: those games this weekend. They were They were the two
- 20:52Speaker 1: losses because the bats weren't there in those games. Bailey
- 20:56Speaker 1: over was close six or sorry, five innings and three
- 20:59Speaker 1: earned roun. Twins are still second in baseball with twenty
- 21:03Speaker 1: seven games where their starter has gone at least five
- 21:07Speaker 1: innings and allowed two or fewer runs. Cody Clemens had
- 21:12Speaker 1: a great series as well. Five hits, yeah, five, five
- 21:15Speaker 1: for twelve, three doubles in there.
- 21:18Speaker 2: Some lefty hits, yeah yeah. Like he's coming around. And
- 21:24Speaker 2: he is also the best first baseman by defensive run
- 21:27Speaker 2: saved in baseball right now. So the Twins potentially could
- 21:31Speaker 2: have a third straight Gold Glove first baseman because Ty
- 21:34Speaker 2: Franz won it last year even though he went to Toronto.
- 21:36Speaker 2: Carlos Santana won it in twenty twenty four, and Cody
- 21:40Speaker 2: Clemens is tied with Kee Alonso for the most defensive
- 21:43Speaker 2: run saved right now. So with p Alonso, that's a
- 21:46Speaker 2: crazy start, right who'd.
- 21:48Speaker 1: Have thought that?
- 21:49Speaker 2: One? Yea?
- 21:52Speaker 1: And that brings us to another guy who's hot, Ryan Jeffers,
- 21:56Speaker 1: And time for our next little segment here. Ryan Jeffers
- 22:06Speaker 1: was three for twelve over the weekend, had another home run.
- 22:10Speaker 1: His tear has continued, and he might be one of
- 22:15Speaker 1: our picks today for Daily Dingers. If you don't know
- 22:17Speaker 1: what Daily Dingers is, it's a game on FanDuel. All
- 22:20Speaker 1: you got to do is make a free pick on
- 22:23Speaker 1: who's going to hit a home run in today's game.
- 22:24Speaker 1: You can pick a Minnesota twin. You can pick anybody
- 22:26Speaker 1: around the league. If you're right, you get a profit
- 22:29Speaker 1: boost to use on your next bet for a chance
- 22:32Speaker 1: at extra winnings. And Dan, no pressure, guys, but we
- 22:37Speaker 1: are three for three, Yeah, we are. We are three
- 22:42Speaker 1: for three picking a Minnesota twin Day of to Homer
- 22:45Speaker 1: that night during this segment. So let's try to make
- 22:48Speaker 1: it four for four. But we should start with talking
- 22:50Speaker 1: about Jeffers, who's just been on a roll.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Dan, Yeah, Ryan Jeffers, I don't know if you could
- 22:55Speaker 2: be having a better walk here as a potential free
- 22:58Speaker 2: agent than he is right now. He's showing smarts behind
- 23:01Speaker 2: the plate and knowing the zone, which I think how
- 23:04Speaker 2: they're going to quantify that in free agency help players
- 23:07Speaker 2: grasp abs that remains to be seen because it's so new.
- 23:11Speaker 2: But he's showing that he is worth more in that
- 23:15Speaker 2: part right now. And then he's hitting like crazy. And
- 23:18Speaker 2: he said yesterday after the home run that he really
- 23:21Speaker 2: wanted to pull the ball more after last year he
- 23:25Speaker 2: had a really nice year at the plate. It was
- 23:26Speaker 2: a complete year at the plate, but there was not
- 23:29Speaker 2: a lot of power and he had his seventh So
- 23:31Speaker 2: this offseason he put in changes. He's pulling the ball
- 23:34Speaker 2: more clearly. Yesterday was his seventh home run. He had
- 23:37Speaker 2: nine all of last year, and he was a plus
- 23:39Speaker 2: offensive player last year, so he's an extremely plus offensive
- 23:42Speaker 2: player this year. Is ops is nine to forty eight,
- 23:45Speaker 2: got four to ten on base a five thirty eight slug.
- 23:48Speaker 2: He is doing a good job of making sure he
- 23:52Speaker 2: gets paid at the end of this year because there's
- 23:56Speaker 2: not a lot of catchers that we've seen hit the
- 23:58Speaker 2: market who were a comp pushed, you know, the like JT.
- 24:03Speaker 2: Real Muto was a couple of years ago. That was
- 24:06Speaker 2: like five or six years ago. He got a nice,
- 24:08Speaker 2: big deal. I don't know that, you know, Ryan Jeffers
- 24:12Speaker 2: is that stratsker. But the one thing he will have
- 24:14Speaker 2: is being the most accomplished guy at the time, and
- 24:17Speaker 2: there's not a lot of those, So that's great for him.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And if I'm am I do I need to make
- 24:24Speaker 2: my pick.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Let's let's make your pick. Who's who's going deep tonight?
- 24:29Speaker 2: Uh?
- 24:29Speaker 1: The Astros are thrown out? Tattoo. Emi is coming off
- 24:33Speaker 1: a he's a righty. First of all, good news if
- 24:36Speaker 1: you're planning to pick a twin tonight, coming off a
- 24:39Speaker 1: rough out against Seattle four Nix pitched five hits, sixer
- 24:42Speaker 1: and runs and two homers allowed. So could happen?
- 24:46Speaker 2: Yeah, okay, Well I am going to steal your bread
- 24:50Speaker 2: and butter, Zac I'm gonna take Byron Bucks is playing.
- 24:54Speaker 2: But here's here, that's the thing. This is do we
- 24:59Speaker 2: think Byron Bucks this This makes it a little bit
- 25:01Speaker 2: more of a tricky selection. I think he will play tonight.
- 25:04Speaker 2: He ran the bases on Saturday, all right, sorry, random
- 25:07Speaker 2: warning track. On Saturday. He did basbla activities on Saturday.
- 25:11Speaker 2: He was in a good mood and you could tell.
- 25:13Speaker 2: And I think that you know, they're at the four
- 25:16Speaker 2: day point, so I think he's back tonight. I just
- 25:20Speaker 2: got the sense he was trending in the right direction.
- 25:22Speaker 2: That's what they said that particular phrase. Byron said that
- 25:26Speaker 2: he was just trying to be smart. But I think
- 25:29Speaker 2: he'll be back in there night. I'm gonna pick Byron
- 25:31Speaker 2: buckson all right, Tyler.
- 25:34Speaker 3: I'm gonna go with the hot hand, my fellow Texan
- 25:37Speaker 3: and Houstonian, mister Clemens dang to stay hot. Assuming assume
- 25:42Speaker 3: he's in the lineup. I don't know, you know, baseball
- 25:44Speaker 3: is crazy. Sometimes you can get hot like that and
- 25:47Speaker 3: they sit you for a day. But assuming he's in
- 25:49Speaker 3: the lineup, I'm gonna take him, you know, take one
- 25:51Speaker 3: of those sinkers and shoot it to left field hopefully.
- 25:55Speaker 1: All right, Well, then my backup pick, I'm gonna go
- 25:57Speaker 1: Trevor Larnick Hey, he went deep the that's that's ther
- 26:03Speaker 1: other one. Okay, So there you go. If you if
- 26:05Speaker 1: you're planning to follow Dan's advice, I would at least
- 26:07Speaker 1: recommend waiting until the lineup is posted. Yes, correct, Dave Buxton,
- 26:12Speaker 1: but Buxton, Byron Buckston, Cody Clemons, Trevor Larnik. Somebody has
- 26:15Speaker 1: to keep our streak going, please. But there you have it.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Those are our picks.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Uh.
- 26:21Speaker 1: If you want to play Daily Dingers, head over to
- 26:23Speaker 1: FanDuel dot com slash podcast to get started. That's FanDuel

- 26:49Speaker 7: and max wager amount. See terms at sportsbook dot FanDuel
- 26:52Speaker 7: dot com. Gambling problem caller tax one eight hundred gambler.
- 26:58Speaker 2: Well.
- 26:58Speaker 1: I was going to start the last this second with
- 27:00Speaker 1: a Byron Buxton injury update, but Dan just gave that
- 27:03Speaker 1: to us. So looking looking like they expect him to
- 27:06Speaker 1: play Dan, That's that's welcome news.
- 27:10Speaker 2: I think he I think he's getting there. It's kind
- 27:13Speaker 2: of getting to that point. And Derek Shelton did say
- 27:15Speaker 2: on Saturday, I said, how long can you play shorthanded?
- 27:19Speaker 2: Because that's clearly something that they're running to a couple
- 27:22Speaker 2: of days here, But he said, when it comes to
- 27:24Speaker 2: Byron Bucks, and he probably gets more time than anybody else.
- 27:27Speaker 2: And I understand missing Byron Bucks in for four games
- 27:31Speaker 2: versus putting him on the ile for ten. You want
- 27:34Speaker 2: those other six games. It seems like he's getting there.
- 27:37Speaker 2: And you know it was his last game was Wednesday,
- 27:42Speaker 2: so he sat the day game Thursday. It didn't shock me.
- 27:47Speaker 2: He sat the game on Sunday too. It's just more
- 27:50Speaker 2: treatment getting back. He worked out on Saturday afternoon and
- 27:55Speaker 2: it was like usually they want to see how the
- 27:57Speaker 2: guy responds on Sunday. And he went back on did
- 27:59Speaker 2: some activity yesterday, so I think we'll see him. He's
- 28:03Speaker 2: itching to play. He said that playing keeps him sane.
- 28:06Speaker 2: He was really funny. It was it was a really
- 28:09Speaker 2: like Buck when he wants to talk is is uh
- 28:13Speaker 2: just got to be one of the like he loves
- 28:16Speaker 2: it too. And I we have we have a perfect
- 28:18Speaker 2: rhythm because you know, I'm now the veteran on the
- 28:21Speaker 2: beat and so I'm always gonna be the one that
- 28:23Speaker 2: has to wear the injury question, Like I I know
- 28:27Speaker 2: my role and he loves to give me some ship
- 28:29Speaker 2: at the start and it's like, I was like, so
- 28:32Speaker 2: how did it go out there? And he's like, went good.
- 28:35Speaker 2: I was like, so what were you hoping to accomplish?
- 28:39Speaker 2: You know, this is a group interview with like five people,
- 28:41Speaker 2: It's like, what were you hoping to accomplish? He said,
- 28:44Speaker 2: get on the field, then a pause, and then he
- 28:48Speaker 2: actually gave a real answer. But he loves to do that.
- 28:51Speaker 2: And then you know, like Byron just warms up and
- 28:54Speaker 2: it's like he's one of those dudes that just you
- 28:57Speaker 2: understand why everybody enjoys playing with them. His energy is
- 29:02Speaker 2: infectious and he loves playing. And he said it keeps
- 29:06Speaker 2: me sane, It keeps me chill to play. So he
- 29:10Speaker 2: wants to be sane. He wants to be chill, and
- 29:12Speaker 2: that's why he was being smart, knowing that if he
- 29:14Speaker 2: pushed it, it might cost him a couple months. Because
- 29:17Speaker 2: he's had three hip injuries that were significant over his career,
- 29:21Speaker 2: so this is familiar territory and he felt it tighten
- 29:25Speaker 2: up a little bit on Wednesday, and that's what the
- 29:27Speaker 2: decision was to back off on Thursday. So he's maging
- 29:31Speaker 2: it and being smart. I just think this is the
- 29:32Speaker 2: time where they make the move to put him back
- 29:34Speaker 2: in there.
- 29:37Speaker 1: Tyler Duffi's Houston Astros come to town nineteen to twenty nine.
- 29:42Speaker 1: Bit of a rough go for the Astros so far,
- 29:45Speaker 1: so we'll see if the Twins can get back to
- 29:48Speaker 1: winning ways. Monday Tuesday Wednesday is the series Kendri Rojas
- 29:52Speaker 1: against tatsia Emi Monday night. Zebbie Matthews gets another start
- 29:56Speaker 1: on Tuesday against Lance mccolors, and Wednesday is O'Ryan against
- 30:01Speaker 1: Mike Burrows. After that, the Twins are not back at
- 30:07Speaker 1: Tardy Field until June. Guys, there's a ten game road
- 30:10Speaker 1: trip coming up, a day off, ten game road trip,
- 30:12Speaker 1: but as the Astros come in, uh, so far it's
- 30:15Speaker 1: been a three and three homestand and the Twins really
- 30:20Speaker 1: pretty much need to get two out of three in
- 30:23Speaker 1: this one. I would say to feel like they had
- 30:26Speaker 1: a successful week and a half at home, I'm not sure.
- 30:31Speaker 2: Go ahead who's even here, who's even on the astros
- 30:35Speaker 2: right now? That's like this is the right time to
- 30:37Speaker 2: be getting that.
- 30:37Speaker 3: I mean, they're banged up. I don't know if Payna
- 30:39Speaker 3: is back yet. I know he might be getting close,
- 30:42Speaker 3: but two just went down. Jordon is in MVP talks already,
- 30:48Speaker 3: so you got to circle.
- 30:49Speaker 2: Him on that lineup card.
- 30:50Speaker 3: And then they're kind of in a spot that all
- 30:52Speaker 3: their young guys are there, and so it's like you
- 30:55Speaker 3: can't sleep on anybody because somebody will pop you if
- 30:57Speaker 3: you don't respect him. But you know they put.
- 31:01Speaker 2: Up and no alves.
- 31:03Speaker 1: That's shocking.
- 31:04Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's not the you know, Twins fans won't
- 31:07Speaker 3: get to do anybody this weekend, but.
- 31:10Speaker 1: I'll still find a way.
- 31:12Speaker 3: But so yeah, it'll be it'll be good. You know,
- 31:15Speaker 3: it's like you got to put them at bats together.
- 31:17Speaker 3: But you know they're beatable. You know they haven't been
- 31:19Speaker 3: for a while, and you know now it's time to
- 31:21Speaker 3: get a little revenge for all the damage they've done
- 31:24Speaker 3: the last ten years. So you know, you just gotta
- 31:27Speaker 3: put some good keep the rotation moving and.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Put some good abs together.
- 31:31Speaker 3: He might just came off the d L as well,
- 31:32Speaker 3: so like he's probably still trying to settle in.
- 31:35Speaker 6: You know.
- 31:35Speaker 3: It's it's uh, it's when they're they're gettable right now,
- 31:38Speaker 3: so it's you might as well do it now because
- 31:40Speaker 3: it seems like every year in September the Astros are
- 31:42Speaker 3: making moves somehow. So it's just, uh, you know, dude,
- 31:45Speaker 3: take care of your business and go get two out
- 31:47Speaker 3: of three and get on the road and you see
- 31:50Speaker 3: in June.
- 31:51Speaker 2: Just to clarify, way, wait, just to clarify, if duff
- 31:54Speaker 2: lived in Nevada, like when Tyler Tyler Duffy's Reno Aces
- 31:59Speaker 2: would have come to how when they played the same
- 32:01Speaker 2: Pulse Saints Uh or Tyler Duffy's Colorado Rockies. No, it doesn't,
- 32:12Speaker 2: it doesn't.
- 32:13Speaker 1: Dan, Sorry, I gotta get you back on the rails. Uh.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Monday Night would have been Simon Woods Richardson's turn in
- 32:23Speaker 1: the rotation. But Kendrey Rojas will get the start, and
- 32:27Speaker 1: I think it's going to be a bullpen game, but
- 32:29Speaker 1: that includes Woods Richardson, who's been moved to the bullpen.
- 32:34Speaker 2: There's not been clarification on what his role is at
- 32:37Speaker 2: this point. They said that was start that go for
- 32:41Speaker 2: he is not starting today. It wouldn't shock me if
- 32:44Speaker 2: they used him in a bulk roll. But also they
- 32:47Speaker 2: might be down them back a little bit because he's
- 32:49Speaker 2: his struggles have been pronounced similar to Royce Lewis, where
- 32:52Speaker 2: Simin Wood's Richardson that splitter was a good pitch for
- 32:55Speaker 2: him at the end of last year. He has not
- 32:57Speaker 2: been a good pitch for him right now. So he's
- 32:59Speaker 2: just with the fastball and guys are hitting him and
- 33:02Speaker 2: it's you know, he's struggling to finanswers and he's out
- 33:07Speaker 2: of options. So this is a guy that they don't
- 33:09Speaker 2: have a word to. They either expose him to the
- 33:11Speaker 2: waiver wire or put him in the bullpen, help him
- 33:14Speaker 2: figure things out, try and get back on track. And
- 33:17Speaker 2: you know he changed his armslot a couple of years
- 33:19Speaker 2: ago to get more velocity and be more athletic. But
- 33:23Speaker 2: I think I mentioned the last time we talked about him,
