- 0:00Sri Rubindo points out that man, the mental being, is actually a
- 0:05transitional being. The development of the mental
- 0:09powers represents quite a considerable leap from the pure
- 0:13vital powers and rudimentary mind found in the animal
- 0:17Kingdom. Nevertheless, even a cursory
- 0:21examination shows us that the mental being, even at its
- 0:25highest and most powerful level of development, cannot possibly
- 0:30be the final term in the evolutionary cycle, as we can
- 0:34recognize serious limitations and failures of the mental
- 0:39consciousness, which clearly cannot be solved by simply
- 0:43enhancing the mental development.
- 0:47The issues lie primarily in several directions. 1st the mind
- 0:52remains very much influenced or even we may say controlled by
- 0:56the vital force of the being. In most human beings, the
- 1:01element of the vital and its influence on the mental power is
- 1:04which Rio Robindo describes as the desire soul and its action
- 1:08in the being. This energetic action represents
- 1:12what most people believe constitutes the soul that
- 1:15animates our lives and our responses.
- 1:19Second, the mental power itself tends towards very limited step
- 1:25by step logical development that seems to try to reduce
- 1:29everything to trenchant black and white dichotomies.
- 1:34This limitation leads to inaccurate judgment, biases
- 1:40uninformed opinions, and essentially contributes to the
- 1:44power that the vital nature holds over the mind.
- 1:49Beyond the formation of the human being, the mental vital
- 1:52physical complex that we recognize and accept as being
- 1:55human, the next stage of the evolution of consciousness is in
- 2:00the process of unfolding. This process is A2 fold process
- 2:05of the pressure from the Universal Divine Force to
- 2:07manifest it and the opening within our nature of the
- 2:11aspiring and receptive element which can respond to this Divine
- 2:16pressure. This is the true soul deep
- 2:20within that by being one with the Divine is able to open to
- 2:26the intention of the Divine. Sri are open to observes.
- 2:31Quote this ambiguity. These opposing appearances of
- 2:36depth and blindness are created by the double character of the
- 2:41human emotive being. For there is in front in men a
- 2:46heart of vital emotions similar to the animals, if more
- 2:49variously developed. Its emotions are governed by
- 2:53egoistic passion, blind instinctive affections, and all
- 2:58the play of the life. Impulses with their
- 3:00imperfections, perversions, often sordid degradations, heart
- 3:06besieged and given over to the lusts, desires, wraths, intense
- 3:12or fierce demands, or little greeds and mean pettiness, is of
- 3:16an obscure and fallen life force, and debased by its
- 3:20slavery to any and every impulse.
- 3:24This mixture of the emotive heart and the sensational,
- 3:27hungering vital creates in man a false soul of desire.
- 3:31It is this that is the crude and dangerous element which the
- 3:36reason rightly distrusts and feels a need to control, even
- 3:40though the actual control, or rather coercion it succeeds in
- 3:45establishing over our raw and insistent vital nature, remains
- 3:50always very uncertain and deceptive.
- 3:55But the true soul of man is not there.
- 3:58It is in the true invisible heart, hidden in some luminous
- 4:01cave of the nature. There, under some infiltration
- 4:06of the Divine Light, is our soul, a silent inmost being of
- 4:11which few are even aware, for of all have a soul, few are
- 4:16conscious of their true soul or feel its direct impulse.
- 4:22There dwells the little spark of the Divine which supports this
- 4:26obscure mass of our nature, and around it grows the psychic
- 4:30being, the formed soul, or the real man within us.
- 4:36It is as this psychic being in him grows, and the movement of
- 4:41the heart reflect its divinations and impulsions, that
- 4:45man becomes more and more aware of his soul ceases to be a
- 4:49superior animal. An awakening to glimpses of the
- 4:53Godhead within him admits more and more its intimations of a
- 4:58deeper life and consciousness and an impulse towards things
- 5:02divine. It is one of the decisive
- 5:06moments of the Integral Yoga, when this psychic being
- 5:10liberated, brought out from the veil to the front, can pour the
- 5:15full flood of its divinations, seeings and impulsions on the
- 5:19mind, life and body of man and begin to prepare the upbuilding
- 5:24of divinity in the earthly nature.
