Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Starma says, don't go out and protest October seventh. Are
- 0:03Speaker 1: they listening, Let's go to Devin Gray. Are UK europe
- 0:05Speaker 1: correspondent Gavin.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Ryan, They most certainly are not. So We've had students
- 0:11Speaker 2: out on the streets across London from different universities, but
- 0:15Speaker 2: also Edinburgh in Scotland, Belfast in Northern Ireland and elsewhere
- 0:18Speaker 2: in the UK, Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol and Leeds, and the
- 0:22Speaker 2: resounding message to secure Starma is well, look, actually, yep, okay,
- 0:27Speaker 2: We're sorry for what happened a couple of years back
- 0:30Speaker 2: on the October the seventh Hamas attack on Israel, but
- 0:33Speaker 2: that is not what we are protesting about. We are
- 0:36Speaker 2: protesting about the treatment of people currently in Gaza. Indeed,
- 0:40Speaker 2: one of the protesters at Sheffield said, what is insensitive
- 0:44Speaker 2: is that there has been two years of genocide and
- 0:47Speaker 2: conflating the actions of Binyaminnette and Yahoo with Judaism is
- 0:51Speaker 2: actually anti Semitic. Carrying on this Jewish people are not
- 0:56Speaker 2: pro genocide and Palestinians are starving right now, lots of
- 1:00Speaker 2: angry students on the streets and frankly, every time I
- 1:02Speaker 2: think our Prime Minister says, please show a little respect
- 1:06Speaker 2: for others. I think it kind of makes them even
- 1:08Speaker 2: more angry and said that isn't the point here and
- 1:11Speaker 2: this is not what we're going to do. And so consequently, yeah,
- 1:14Speaker 2: we've seen plenty of marches today. And let's not forget
- 1:16Speaker 2: Ryan that on Saturday police in London arrested nearly five
- 1:20Speaker 2: hundred people during protests and support of a prescribed group
- 1:24Speaker 2: of Palestine Action that they voted to make a terrorist
- 1:27Speaker 2: group where support for it or showing any kind of
- 1:30Speaker 2: membership of it can lead to a custodial sentence.
- 1:33Speaker 1: Gavin the French, the mess politically, an absolute mess at
- 1:37Speaker 1: the moment, and there are calls from the kron because
- 1:39Speaker 1: he's sending out the PM is just resigned to go
- 1:42Speaker 1: and fix the whole thing that he couldn't fix in
- 1:43Speaker 1: the first place. But calls for him to just appoint
- 1:46Speaker 1: a new PM and then get out of the call
- 1:48Speaker 1: some early presidential elections.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Yes and round for a change. This isn't his opponents
- 1:55Speaker 2: in this These are now some of his own supporters
- 1:57Speaker 2: from within his own party, and that I think really
- 2:01Speaker 2: does signal just how isolated he is now. Indeed, Gabrielle Attal,
- 2:06Speaker 2: he leads Immanuel Macron's Renaissance Party and was Prime minister
- 2:10Speaker 2: for six months last year, went on National TV to
- 2:13Speaker 2: say quote, he no longer understands the decisions made by
- 2:17Speaker 2: the President of the Republic. I mean, if ever, there
- 2:19Speaker 2: was a stabbing in the front hand the back, it
- 2:22Speaker 2: is that so far forty seven year old Emmanual Macron
- 2:25Speaker 2: has refused to resign. But frankly his options are really
- 2:28Speaker 2: narrowing at the moment, with political opponents on the radical left,
- 2:32Speaker 2: the hard rid and now even his own allies indicating
- 2:35Speaker 2: he should go. A recent opinion poll suggested that well
- 2:38Speaker 2: over half the French population thinks he should resign. And this,
- 2:44Speaker 2: of course now, I think we've had three French prime
- 2:46Speaker 2: ministers in the last year, five in the last two years.
- 2:50Speaker 2: None of them are able to push through what Emmanual
- 2:52Speaker 2: Macron wants, which is a cut to the cost of
- 2:57Speaker 2: government spending and an increase in taxes. All of them
- 3:01Speaker 2: are being defeated by not just opponents, but also the
- 3:04Speaker 2: country at large that does not want to see their
- 3:06Speaker 2: standard of living for.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Kevin Gray are UK europe correspondents for.
