- 0:02Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Derren. All right, Well, firstly, why
- 0:08Speaker 1: am I not in Knicks giar Well?
- 0:10Speaker 2: Because earlier today it was announced there might be a
- 0:14Speaker 2: renaming of Veterans Day, and to me, it will always
- 0:16Speaker 2: be Veterans Day and Memorial Day. So I up the
- 0:19Speaker 2: New York Yankees United States, Red, White, and Blue Yankees
- 0:24Speaker 2: logo here because it's the only one that I really
- 0:26Speaker 2: have from the Yanks, So why not? Although I should
- 0:29Speaker 2: be wearing Brunton today because lou Terminello, just like the Knicks,
- 0:33Speaker 2: we pushed this envelope to Friday to Terminilo's take for
- 0:37Speaker 2: the Knicks to finally seal the deal.
- 0:39Speaker 3: Here we did, Alex, and thank you for always having me.
- 0:45Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Yeah, the Knicks made this much suffer
- 0:49Speaker 3: than I thought it would ever be. I didn't think
- 0:50Speaker 3: that that the pitchings would give the Knicks this much
- 0:54Speaker 3: of a problem. They did. Kudos to them. They were
- 0:58Speaker 3: shorthanded and they still played to They had a great year.
- 1:01Speaker 3: I mean they had made the playoffs in six years
- 1:03Speaker 3: and they went from fourteen wins to forty four. Their
- 1:08Speaker 3: roster still needs some tinkering, but the one thing that
- 1:12Speaker 3: you got out of last night, and we've known this
- 1:16Speaker 3: since last year. Jalen Brunson offensively is a superstar. There's
- 1:22Speaker 3: no doubt.
- 1:22Speaker 2: Process up at every angle has been so fun to
- 1:25Speaker 2: watch the way he crossed them up and then spots
- 1:27Speaker 2: up for the three. I mean, you know, I was
- 1:29Speaker 2: telling a firnman, you can't teach that. Isn't that instinct?
- 1:31Speaker 1: Great there?
- 1:33Speaker 3: Well, I mean, the guy works hard. We've said this
- 1:35Speaker 3: a million times. I don't think when the Dallas Mavericks
- 1:39Speaker 3: let him go to free agency he thought he'd end
- 1:41Speaker 3: up being this, this, this great and he's great. Offensively
- 1:45Speaker 3: he is. He's a great, great player.
- 1:48Speaker 1: So are you saying the Nick Shire thing Nico Harrison
- 1:50Speaker 1: for Jalen Brunson as well?
- 1:53Speaker 3: Well, well, I think it was. I think it was
- 1:54Speaker 3: probably more of an organizational thing, because, let's face it,
- 1:58Speaker 3: the Mavericks were coached by one of the greatest point
- 2:01Speaker 3: guards in NBA history, and if he saw that Brunston
- 2:07Speaker 3: was going to rise to this level, I assume he
- 2:09Speaker 3: would up stepped in and say, hey, we got to
- 2:11Speaker 3: sign this guy. But that's that's past news. The Knicks
- 2:14Speaker 3: have him, he's their difference maker. They would have lost
- 2:19Speaker 3: if he wasn't there. Bridges finally had a good game
- 2:23Speaker 3: in the clutch situation. That tip was absolutely monumental. Yeah,
- 2:30Speaker 3: no doubt. And really everybody played pretty well last night
- 2:33Speaker 3: except Karl Anthony Towns and Carl Anton still had fourteen
- 2:37Speaker 3: rebounds and the Knick that rebound him in the last
- 2:39Speaker 3: two games. But now the real test commerce playtime is over,
- 2:44Speaker 3: and the Knicks had trouble in playtime.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Now let me ask you this, I right to say
- 2:51Speaker 2: I don't remember them advancing past the Conference semis the
- 2:53Speaker 2: last three times.
- 2:54Speaker 3: I mean, that is correct.
- 2:56Speaker 2: They've won the first round and that was a big
- 2:58Speaker 2: hump they got over couple of years ago.
- 3:01Speaker 1: But now we're waiting for more early.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Correct and this this is the hunt they have to
- 3:06Speaker 3: get over. If by some chance they could pull the
- 3:10Speaker 3: victory in the series against the Celtics, I think I'm
- 3:14Speaker 3: not a betting guy, but I heard they were a
- 3:16Speaker 3: huge underdog in Vegas and in the on the various
- 3:20Speaker 3: sports betting sites. Going back to my time tested formula,
- 3:28Speaker 3: can they beat them four out of seven? I don't know,
- 3:32Speaker 3: I really, I mean, it would be really hard for
- 3:34Speaker 3: the Knicks to beat them four out of seven. I
- 3:37Speaker 3: think winning last night was such a key because it
- 3:41Speaker 3: got the Knicks three days off. If it went to
- 3:43Speaker 3: Game seven, even one Game seven at the Garden on
- 3:47Speaker 3: Saturday night, they would only had one day off. So
- 3:49Speaker 3: all the bumps and bruises that they got in this
- 3:51Speaker 3: incredibly physically physical series against the Pistons, the three days
- 3:57Speaker 3: off will help them the best. The best chance for
- 4:00Speaker 3: the Knicks to win the game on the road is
- 4:02Speaker 3: Game one is Monday night.
- 4:05Speaker 1: It set the tone. Look, if they could split Boston,
- 4:08Speaker 1: I'll be happy. Just get back to New York one one.
- 4:11Speaker 1: That would be good.
- 4:12Speaker 2: But you know, Detroit's fascinating, right, kay, kunnyam, you can't
- 4:15Speaker 2: talking about the guy.
- 4:16Speaker 1: I mean, he is the future of Detroit.
- 4:18Speaker 2: I think he can lead this team to some really
- 4:20Speaker 2: big rounds here in the next few years.
- 4:22Speaker 3: I agree, I totally agree. And he was a number
- 4:26Speaker 3: one overall pick. He missed a full year with injury.
- 4:29Speaker 3: The kid is an excellent player. Detroit did a nice job.
- 4:34Speaker 3: I mean they went from fourteen wins to forty four.
- 4:37Speaker 3: They hadn't made the players in six straight years. I
- 4:40Speaker 3: don't think they want to have won a home game
- 4:42Speaker 3: in seventeen years during the playoffs and they had opportunities
- 4:46Speaker 3: to win.
- 4:46Speaker 2: The second and that was around the last time that
- 4:49Speaker 2: they won the championship, isn't it.
- 4:52Speaker 3: That is they won a championship in two thousand and
- 4:55Speaker 3: four when Larry Brown was the coach.
- 4:58Speaker 1: John sa billups Be Wallace, Oh my god, the legends
- 5:02Speaker 1: on that team too.
- 5:03Speaker 3: But absolutely, and then they got to the finals the
- 5:06Speaker 3: next year and they lost to the Spurs. So interesting
- 5:11Speaker 3: series coming up for the Knicks. It's gonna be hard
- 5:14Speaker 3: for the Knicks now.
- 5:15Speaker 2: I mean, obviously the Celtics pretty much did what they
- 5:19Speaker 2: had to do against Orlando.
- 5:20Speaker 1: Are there any health concerns that you could see from
- 5:23Speaker 1: this series as.
- 5:23Speaker 3: Jas well, we don't know about Jalen Brown's knee, about
- 5:30Speaker 3: holiday injury. He's a key defensive guy for them. I
- 5:37Speaker 3: was assume they're healthy. But let me tell you one
- 5:39Speaker 3: thing about the NBA players in general, all the guys
- 5:42Speaker 3: who were banged up during the course of the year.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And you know, you watch like a guy like Kawhi
- 5:48Speaker 3: Leonard who basically went at half speed during the course
- 5:51Speaker 3: of the year, and he's in this great playoff series
- 5:54Speaker 3: against against the Denver Nuggets. The guy's back at the
- 5:58Speaker 3: top of his game. He's so good offensively and defensively,
- 6:01Speaker 3: and all those injuries, which I assume he still has,
- 6:04Speaker 3: are are tucked away in the back of his mind
- 6:07Speaker 3: because guy's playing hard, which again I know I hate.
- 6:10Speaker 3: As somebody who was in the NBA for twenty eight years,
- 6:13Speaker 3: I hate to say this about my league. I would
- 6:16Speaker 3: never pay for a regular season NBA game ticket, never,
- 6:22Speaker 3: because it's a total different game. The player's mindset is different.
- 6:26Speaker 3: It's more so than any score. So the Western Conference
- 6:31Speaker 3: playoffs have been better in the East. Actually, the Knicks
- 6:34Speaker 3: gave us the best series, really by I don't want
- 6:39Speaker 3: to say playing down to Detroit's level, but having more
- 6:42Speaker 3: problem than I thought they would have with Detroit. The
- 6:45Speaker 3: other series. You knew those teams they got it was
- 6:47Speaker 3: a big lead.
- 6:48Speaker 1: I mean they're England. Look Cleveland, Oklahoma City. They blew
- 6:51Speaker 1: out their opponents.
- 6:52Speaker 3: They blew out there. So I think in this the
- 6:56Speaker 3: next round the series will be more competitive. The Knicks
- 6:59Speaker 3: have a chance.
- 7:00Speaker 2: But I want to get to the Cleveland series because
- 7:02Speaker 2: you you always praised Boestra.
- 7:04Speaker 1: It almost looked like that final game that didn't show up.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Is there a coaching thing there? Is his time. His
- 7:09Speaker 1: time's not wearing out there, is it?
- 7:11Speaker 3: No? I would doubt it. I mean if he decides
- 7:15Speaker 3: to leave, very much like say in other sports, Andy
- 7:18Speaker 3: Reid leaving the Eagles after fourteen years, just to use
- 7:22Speaker 3: that as a as a comparison.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And only isn't it because he had a weather, the
- 7:26Speaker 2: Jimmy Butler storm, which was really early on and I
- 7:28Speaker 2: don't know if they ever recovered from that fully.
- 7:30Speaker 3: Well, and the ross was not as good, especially without
- 7:32Speaker 3: Jimmy Butler. But Alex they were tenth in the league,
- 7:36Speaker 3: they were tenth in the East. They won thirty seven games. Yeah,
- 7:41Speaker 3: they weren't really a playoff team. They should have even
- 7:43Speaker 3: been there. So again, you know, for everybody who loves
- 7:47Speaker 3: to play.
- 7:48Speaker 2: In tournaments, I well, look, if they were going to
- 7:52Speaker 2: expand it, I'd rather that than try another wildcard round,
- 7:54Speaker 2: which you would not be able to do in either
- 7:56Speaker 2: NHL or NBA. I've come to that decision because he's
- 8:00Speaker 2: two sports are not built for a wildcard round. Okay,
- 8:02Speaker 2: the way the playoffs are now, it's four browns too
- 8:04Speaker 2: long anyway.
- 8:05Speaker 3: But that's correct, it is so, but it's false leaves.
- 8:11Speaker 3: She'll be picked up in no time. You know. I
- 8:14Speaker 3: even heard. Now I don't want to jump to another sport.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I heard that, you know, like John Cooper might be
- 8:18Speaker 3: leaving after all, I might be leaving a Tampa Bay.
- 8:22Speaker 3: It's not anything that he's done. But sometimes you get
- 8:25Speaker 3: these stories that, Okay, it's just time to go somewhere else, right,
- 8:29Speaker 3: So so who knows?
- 8:31Speaker 2: And you were telling me up until the Rangers name
- 8:33Speaker 2: Mike Sullivan, there's about eight coaching vacancies.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Now seven am I right?
- 8:37Speaker 3: Right? There was eight, and we knew as we talked
- 8:39Speaker 3: on Monday morning at nine fifteen. As soon as it
- 8:42Speaker 3: became official that Sullivan was gone, we knew the Rangers.
- 8:47Speaker 3: I said to you, in the next seventy two hours,
- 8:48Speaker 3: he's going to be the coach. Well, I was off
- 8:51Speaker 3: by about eight hours, so I'm here.
- 8:53Speaker 1: He might bring with.
- 8:53Speaker 2: Him David Quinn and Tortorella on the bench. Now that
- 8:58Speaker 2: would be usually have three former two for more guys
- 9:00Speaker 2: with the new coach.
- 9:02Speaker 3: I just would be surprised if Tortorello would take a
- 9:06Speaker 3: job as an assistant. But maybe he will, because I
- 9:09Speaker 3: don't I'm not sure anybody will hire him as a
- 9:11Speaker 3: as a head coach.
- 9:14Speaker 1: I want to go back to that for a second.
- 9:15Speaker 2: Let's go back to the NBA to wrap that up,
- 9:17Speaker 2: because Okay, we all kind of laughed at Nico Harrison
- 9:21Speaker 2: for trading Duncic, but they pretty much collapsed.
- 9:26Speaker 1: I don't know how it happened.
- 9:29Speaker 2: I mean, have Lebron duncas and they didn't even get
- 9:30Speaker 2: out of the first round against the Wolves. What was
- 9:32Speaker 2: the recipe there for Minnesota?
- 9:35Speaker 3: I have to I have to say that I was
- 9:41Speaker 3: semi wrong. I thought Minnesota would not be a would
- 9:45Speaker 3: not be a playoff power and or really be a
- 9:51Speaker 3: playoff factor. Power is the wrong word. I thought the
- 9:54Speaker 3: Lakers would win this series, and Minnesota was better coached,
- 10:00Speaker 3: and they got They got good performances from Anthony Edwards,
- 10:04Speaker 3: Randall played well, Stevincenzo played well. They got, they got,
- 10:10Speaker 3: they got a nice team. I have a feeling that
- 10:12Speaker 3: they might win this next round. Now getting back to
- 10:15Speaker 3: the Lakers, I think it's just a situation where Luca
- 10:21Speaker 3: and Lebron it's hard to believe when we have two
- 10:25Speaker 3: of the top players in the league you can only
- 10:27Speaker 3: win one playoff game in the first round. I just
- 10:30Speaker 3: have a feeling that they didn't have enough time to
- 10:32Speaker 3: mesh chemistry things of that nature. I have no idea
- 10:36Speaker 3: how much longer Lebron's gonna want to play. He's still
- 10:39Speaker 3: playing at a very high level. He's gonna play another
- 10:41Speaker 3: two years, another one year. But I think a full
- 10:43Speaker 3: training camp with Luca JJ. Reid did a good job
- 10:47Speaker 3: as coach in I mean, he had never coached anywhere,
- 10:51Speaker 3: not even as assistant. So I'm not going to breathe
- 10:59Speaker 3: the Lakers, I would have the kudos to or the
- 11:05Speaker 3: t Wolves.
- 11:06Speaker 2: So uh now, how about this, Maybe the NBA wants
- 11:09Speaker 2: a cat versus a rematch it, you know, NBA final,
- 11:13Speaker 2: That would be kind of interesting.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I don't know what happened, but well, if.
- 11:16Speaker 3: The NBA, if the NBA wants that, Kat has to
- 11:19Speaker 3: be playing much much better in the next the next
- 11:23Speaker 3: two rounds to get to the finals.
- 11:26Speaker 2: Well, and I know you want to go off about
- 11:27Speaker 2: the game and it's kind of all news now, but
- 11:30Speaker 2: last week's Sday call with the final at that final three,
- 11:34Speaker 2: it could have changed the whole series.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Though of course you could have Detroit would have probably
- 11:38Speaker 3: probably hit those free throws and won the game. And
- 11:42Speaker 3: it was a travesty that they blew that call so
- 11:45Speaker 3: much so the NBA didn't even wait to their two
- 11:47Speaker 3: minute report that they usually put out the next day.
- 11:50Speaker 3: They said, basically an hour after the game, Hey, we
- 11:53Speaker 3: blew that call. Now, Alex, my friends, if that was
- 11:58Speaker 3: at Madison Square Guarden and was going up for a
- 12:01Speaker 3: shot like that and got hit in a similar way
- 12:03Speaker 3: or Bridges or or call Anthony Towns, do you think
- 12:07Speaker 3: the officials would have blown or would have swallowed their whistle.
- 12:11Speaker 2: That charging call was very interesting last night against Detroit.
- 12:15Speaker 2: I will say that, I mean or that that call
- 12:18Speaker 2: where Brunton might be able it might have been called
- 12:21Speaker 2: for charging on that and said it what the other way,
- 12:23Speaker 2: that was a very interesting one.
- 12:24Speaker 3: You mean the one that was one twelve to one
- 12:26Speaker 3: oh five and he tried. I actually thought when Detroit challenged,
- 12:30Speaker 3: I actually thought that they were going to win the challenge.
- 12:33Speaker 3: It was close, but I thought they were going to
- 12:35Speaker 3: win the challenge. But it looked like Brunton initiated the contact,
- 12:39Speaker 3: but they didn't. So we move on.
- 12:43Speaker 2: And well, by the way you mentioned in price of
- 12:44Speaker 2: tickets and you had the very good fortune. I should
- 12:46Speaker 2: remind the listeners to be at the NBA Finals for
- 12:49Speaker 2: two a couple of years in a row there, and
- 12:51Speaker 2: I know that was a very special time. Lost or not,
- 12:54Speaker 2: it was just special to be there and you were
- 12:56Speaker 2: there without having to pay, right, I mean, that's well.
- 12:59Speaker 3: That was that was the good thing. Yeah, I didn't
- 13:01Speaker 3: have to pay. But I saw about seventeen hundred NBA
- 13:06Speaker 3: games live and I probably paid for three of them.
- 13:11Speaker 2: So, by the way, speaking of that, the Bucks end
- 13:15Speaker 2: of the season, the Bucks end of season was quite
- 13:21Speaker 2: fascinating because now, for some reason, I thought Giannis or
- 13:25Speaker 2: a free agent. I don't know why I thought that,
- 13:26Speaker 2: but I feel like there's still questions surrounding him in
- 13:28Speaker 2: the offseason, right, I don't know why.
- 13:30Speaker 3: But there are, there are, and these are the reasons.
- 13:34Speaker 3: He has two years left on his deal at fifty
- 13:36Speaker 3: four point one million. Nice salary, Alex And yeah, two
- 13:43Speaker 3: years left on his deal. The thing is the Bucks
- 13:47Speaker 3: are their roster is not as good as it was,
- 13:50Speaker 3: and obviously, with Damian Lillard blowing out his achilles, he's
- 13:54Speaker 3: probably gonna miss the entire twenty five to twenty six season.
- 13:58Speaker 3: They don't have any draft. They have I think they
- 14:02Speaker 3: might have one in the next six years or something
- 14:04Speaker 3: like that. So they might dangle Yannis out there. I mean,
- 14:10Speaker 3: obviously there's always been a little smoke that the Brooklyn
- 14:13Speaker 3: Nets are interesting them. And the Brooklyn Nets have this
- 14:16Speaker 3: flewer picks first and second round picks through twenty nine
- 14:20Speaker 3: thirty or thirty thirty one. And this is what I
- 14:23Speaker 3: think Sean Marks is waiting for to see if you can.
- 14:26Speaker 2: So we're gonna be looking at in the next you know,
- 14:29Speaker 2: trade that line a Duncans type of situation where they
- 14:32Speaker 2: don't want to pay Gianna's they just trade them.
- 14:34Speaker 3: At this point, well, they'll usually and they're going to
- 14:36Speaker 3: try to get back draft capital. I don't know if
- 14:39Speaker 3: there's any place specifically on the Nets that that they want.
- 14:44Speaker 3: They might have to do some accept some plays for
- 14:46Speaker 3: cap reasons, but the Nets aren't going to be the
- 14:49Speaker 3: only team after the honest if You're honest is put
- 14:51Speaker 3: out there by by Milwaukee. If the Nicks failed this round,
- 14:56Speaker 3: which I would say, if it goes according to UH they.
- 15:02Speaker 1: Have Towns Jalen Giannis, that well.
- 15:04Speaker 3: They will have to they would have to trade one
- 15:06Speaker 3: of those guys that it won't be. It won't be Bronson,
- 15:09Speaker 3: but I'm sure Durant is going to be on the
- 15:13Speaker 3: nixt radar if they fail in this round, and uh
- 15:20Speaker 3: so the NBA off season is going to be is
- 15:22Speaker 3: going to be interesting.
- 15:23Speaker 1: I want to float this idea because the was nothing.
- 15:26Speaker 1: They will get the.
- 15:27Speaker 2: Next into that into the conference. Semies even I almost
- 15:32Speaker 2: felt like he was almost on the hot seat.
- 15:33Speaker 1: I'll be more questioning his moves in this round. Is
- 15:35Speaker 1: this is this hot? Is this hot this round or not? Really?
- 15:39Speaker 3: Well, I think that the seat got a little cooler
- 15:44Speaker 3: because they beat Detroit. Now, if they had beat Detroit,
- 15:46Speaker 3: a team that they were if they had lost to Detroit,
- 15:49Speaker 3: a team that they were better than, yeah, I think
- 15:52Speaker 3: he would have been under immense pressure. I don't know.
- 15:55Speaker 3: I don't know if uh Dolan and the Knicks brass
- 15:59Speaker 3: Leon Roe would have fired him, but he would start
- 16:02Speaker 3: next season with a very very short leash.
- 16:06Speaker 2: You know, New York is not going to stand for
- 16:07Speaker 2: another round, you know, second round of elimination either. So
- 16:11Speaker 2: there's a lot of pressure on this team going into
- 16:13Speaker 2: this round. They've been there now the fourth straight year.
- 16:16Speaker 2: You got to make the fourth year account.
- 16:18Speaker 3: No, you can't, you know, you can't just stop here.
- 16:24Speaker 3: But they got a tough road to home. Man, I
- 16:26Speaker 3: can't again, I can't see them winning four out of
- 16:29Speaker 3: seven against the Celtics.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Well, and on the other side, you also saw that
- 16:33Speaker 2: defending champion continue on the Panthers, and I don't know,
- 16:38Speaker 2: I felt like the Panthers are not the Panthers of
- 16:40Speaker 2: last year.
- 16:41Speaker 1: I feel like they're not as crisp.
- 16:43Speaker 3: Alex A very good word you use, crisp. I did
- 16:47Speaker 3: not think that they were going to be this crisp
- 16:50Speaker 3: against the team like Tampa Bay. Yes, we knew one
- 16:53Speaker 3: of these great teams was going to be eliminated in
- 16:56Speaker 3: the first round because the way the NFL has their
- 16:58Speaker 3: playoff structure set up. I don't like the playoffs structure,
- 17:04Speaker 3: but anyway, Uh, I thought Tampa Bay was going to
- 17:10Speaker 3: get to the finals, really really have a great chance
- 17:12Speaker 3: to get to the finals. And uh, Florida. Again, what
- 17:17Speaker 3: champions do when the going gets tough. They got going.
- 17:22Speaker 3: And if you said to me it's gonna be a
- 17:23Speaker 3: five game series, I would have lost. I would have
- 17:26Speaker 3: lost that back.
- 17:28Speaker 2: Well, and you know, Bobrovski still, I mean yes, yes,
- 17:32Speaker 2: and this one. You know, even Bennington, I think the
- 17:35Speaker 2: the US Averse Canada's game itself help Bennington find his
- 17:39Speaker 2: group because after that the Blues went crazy.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Okay, and he's a big reason.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Why, no doubt, you're one hundred correct.
- 17:46Speaker 2: And I got and I mentioned goaltenders because we got
- 17:49Speaker 2: to give a lot of credit to mark Strom, the
- 17:51Speaker 2: guy in that was double over. I mean, wow, wow
- 17:56Speaker 2: that he kept the Devils alive that game.
- 17:58Speaker 3: No question about it. In the double overtime. The Devils
- 18:02Speaker 3: are running on fumes. They had guys who probably shouldn't
- 18:06Speaker 3: have been on the ice, and mark Strom stood on
- 18:10Speaker 3: their head. I mean, even if the Devils had won
- 18:13Speaker 3: that game in overtime, I don't I don't think they're
- 18:18Speaker 3: gonna win a series. But again, this is the Devils
- 18:20Speaker 3: to everybody knows. Now, the Devils have to improve the
- 18:22Speaker 3: back end of their the bottom sixt the two lines.
- 18:28Speaker 3: But again they were oh to fifteen on the power play.
- 18:32Speaker 3: Here's a team that was third in the league in
- 18:35Speaker 3: the power play. They actually went up percentage wise after
- 18:39Speaker 3: Jack Hughes got hurt. But again they didn't have Jack
- 18:42Speaker 3: Hughes in the playoffs. They didn't after first game. They
- 18:45Speaker 3: didn't have Luke Hues who anchors the power play. Then
- 18:49Speaker 3: they lost Brendan Dillon. They lost Covid Savitch, another one
- 18:54Speaker 3: of the defenseman. So I'm giving the Devils a pass,
- 18:58Speaker 3: but the pass comes to an end. Next year, they
- 19:00Speaker 3: gotta they gotta really show that they're more than just
- 19:04Speaker 3: a middle of the road Stanley Cup playoff team. They
- 19:09Speaker 3: gotta get They gotta advance next.
- 19:11Speaker 2: Year, all right, You know them on Markstrom And I
- 19:14Speaker 2: think about the pressure is that that alone? Goaltending there's
- 19:19Speaker 2: a pressure to it because like the Jets finding the
- 19:22Speaker 2: next name it and the Giants finding the next LT
- 19:25Speaker 2: and this, that and the other. No one talks about
- 19:27Speaker 2: how they're always hoping that next to the bro door
- 19:30Speaker 2: shows up right.
- 19:31Speaker 3: Well, you're you're correct, And you know you mentioned a
- 19:34Speaker 3: couple of different sports, the toughest positions in sports right now.
- 19:38Speaker 3: The pressure, in my opinion, this is my opinion. NFL
- 19:43Speaker 3: quarterback we know the pressure on them. Closures in baseball
- 19:48Speaker 3: we know the pressure on them. And goaltending and hockey.
- 19:53Speaker 3: I mean those three positions in the four major sports.
- 19:58Speaker 3: The mental and physical toll takes on you. It's something
- 20:02Speaker 3: Alex that you can't even measure it. It's so intense.
- 20:05Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's it's a lot and especially and this
- 20:08Speaker 4: is why you were so valuable because he was on
- 20:10Speaker 4: his head to keep that team alive in the set,
- 20:13Speaker 4: in the fight of life in the Confegence Final last year.
- 20:15Speaker 4: I mean without him, they would have been eliminated in
- 20:18Speaker 4: five or six games. You know, in four or five,
- 20:20Speaker 4: no doubt about it. But special teams are so important.
- 20:24Speaker 4: You look at Edmonton the first and look those first
- 20:28Speaker 4: two games to the.
- 20:29Speaker 3: To the games they were all in five on the
- 20:31Speaker 3: power play, and then these, uh, the last four games
- 20:35Speaker 3: that they won, they were five, they were five right
- 20:38Speaker 3: on the power play. Special you want to win five
- 20:41Speaker 3: on five. But special teams makes a difference many times
- 20:44Speaker 3: in winning and losing these games. And Edmonton marches on.
- 20:48Speaker 2: All right, I want to I'll get to the winless
- 20:51Speaker 2: season that the Knicks had against the Celtics and Caps.
- 20:53Speaker 1: So that's a big story I had into this. But
- 20:55Speaker 1: I want to finish with.
- 20:56Speaker 2: The Oilers, and in this NHL talk, obviously I have
- 21:00Speaker 2: the capitol is winning it all because I feel like
- 21:02Speaker 2: you get the ring, you get the record, you want
- 21:04Speaker 2: to get the ring, right, I think they're on that path,
- 21:07Speaker 2: But how cool would it be in the year where
- 21:10Speaker 2: they're in joining in the playoffs, just to see. In
- 21:13Speaker 2: my view, i'd personally to see Edmonton versus Toronto, McDavid
- 21:18Speaker 2: versus Matthews.
- 21:19Speaker 1: That's what we all should want, right, I mean, that
- 21:21Speaker 1: would be so fun.
- 21:22Speaker 3: Well, that would be that would be a very interesting series.
- 21:26Speaker 3: And obviously you might as well lock down Canada because
- 21:30Speaker 3: they'll be so into it, because finally I'll have a
- 21:33Speaker 3: Canadian city that'll break this long drought of not winning.
- 21:39Speaker 1: Thirty two calendar years, thirty three seasons.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Yeah, and I was worried about Toronto last night, not that,
- 21:47Speaker 3: and I don't root for that, Don't get me wrong.
- 21:51Speaker 3: I said to myself, if they don't win that game
- 21:54Speaker 3: last night and they got to come home for Game seven,
- 21:57Speaker 3: I mean, the pressure would have been I can't even
- 22:00Speaker 3: calculate how much the pressure would be on them. But
- 22:02Speaker 3: they did win, and uh, you know, we'll see how
- 22:05Speaker 3: far they go. They need to get to the to
- 22:08Speaker 3: a Cup final. And as I said last week when
- 22:12Speaker 3: we were previewing the playoffs, this is their best shot
- 22:17Speaker 3: I think to get there. So uh so we'll see
- 22:20Speaker 3: what happens. And uh, you know, he still got Florida
- 22:23Speaker 3: and Washington, uh in the playoffs, I thought Montreal will
- 22:29Speaker 3: and they all the games were closed, so I'm not
- 22:30Speaker 3: saying they weren't, but I thought Montreal would win at
- 22:33Speaker 3: least one more game in that that series against Montreal
- 22:37Speaker 3: have won one more game in that series against Washington.
- 22:40Speaker 2: They didn't well, And as I said, Montreal has some
- 22:44Speaker 2: talent now they didn't really have. I mean, I think
- 22:46Speaker 2: Suzuki is coming to his own. I love Gallagher. You know,
- 22:48Speaker 2: Gallagher have been a main stay there.
- 22:50Speaker 3: But yeah, yeah, mainstay, Like you just said, Gallagher, Suzuki,
- 22:55Speaker 3: Lane Hudson, who should win a Rookie of the Year,
- 22:57Speaker 3: tremendous player, Cold Cawfield, Uh you know two undersize he's
- 23:02Speaker 3: too little, that's what. But guys for thirty seven goals.
- 23:06Speaker 3: He had a terrific series against against the Caps. Montreal
- 23:11Speaker 3: is a team on the rise.
- 23:13Speaker 2: They really are, all right now we got the NHL
- 23:16Speaker 2: out of our system. The winless for Celtics and Calves
- 23:22Speaker 2: are going to follow the Knicks because I'm sure they're
- 23:24Speaker 2: going to be the next two rope blocks. If the
- 23:26Speaker 2: Knicks beat the Celtics, it's probably than the Cavs next.
- 23:29Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's the logical thing to think but
- 23:33Speaker 2: now this is the playoffs.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Is it gonna be a different animal.
- 23:36Speaker 2: Or is it sort of the similar kind of momentum
- 23:37Speaker 2: Boston carries him from those.
- 23:39Speaker 3: Well if Boston who beat them four times in the
- 23:42Speaker 3: regular season, and really I know one game went to overtime,
- 23:46Speaker 3: but but really had control. If they raised their game,
- 23:53Speaker 3: the Knicks have no chance. The knicks best hope is
- 23:56Speaker 3: that the Celtics in their minds saying, you know what,
- 23:58Speaker 3: we beat these guys four games in the regular season,
- 24:00Speaker 3: and they might catch them on an off night. Alex.
- 24:04Speaker 3: The first game is important because the Celtics have been
- 24:07Speaker 3: off for a week. They could be a little rusty.
- 24:10Speaker 3: They rely on that three point shooting and if that
- 24:14Speaker 3: night those three points are not going in, the Knicks
- 24:16Speaker 3: can steal a game in Boston Game one, I don't think.
- 24:21Speaker 3: And I know that. I know how the media loves
- 24:24Speaker 3: to talk about the Garden and celebrity row, but really
- 24:29Speaker 3: the Knicks and Rangers in these players, and now we
- 24:32Speaker 3: know the Rangers aren't in the play this year. The
- 24:34Speaker 3: Garden hasn't been has hasn't been the home court panacea
- 24:41Speaker 3: for the Knicks. They lost two to Detroit. I mean,
- 24:44Speaker 3: we can even go back a couple of years ago
- 24:45Speaker 3: with the Rangers, they won those two games at Prudential Center.
- 24:49Speaker 3: Nobody thought the inexperienced Devils would would win it both
- 24:52Speaker 3: games at the Garden. They did. And I don't know
- 24:56Speaker 3: if the Garden home court advantage is as much as
- 25:00Speaker 3: the media would like.
- 25:00Speaker 2: You are so, you are so hitting on a thing
- 25:03Speaker 2: I've talked about for years, which is everybody used to
- 25:06Speaker 2: be afraid to come to the Garden.
- 25:07Speaker 1: They used to be afraid to go to Yankee team.
- 25:08Speaker 1: They used to be.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Afraid, you know, to play here in New York. I
- 25:12Speaker 2: don't know where we lost our bite along the way,
- 25:14Speaker 2: but I feel like we have a little bit.
- 25:17Speaker 3: I think it's true. It's it really is.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Ten years ago. By the way it's being of, you know,
- 25:27Speaker 1: sports and homefield events. Ten years ago, the Mets went
- 25:29Speaker 1: to the World Series.
- 25:30Speaker 2: I might be having a watch, going to watch party
- 25:32Speaker 2: with Terry Collins. So anything you want me to ask him?
- 25:34Speaker 2: If I get to meet the man that led the
- 25:36Speaker 2: Mets of the World Series ten years ago.
- 25:38Speaker 3: Yeah, just ask him. What's going on? Why these starting
- 25:42Speaker 3: pitchers can't go more in five innutes? And it's hurting
- 25:45Speaker 3: Major League baseball, and it's hurting the Mets right now.
- 25:49Speaker 3: Obviously they might have they have a major injury with it.
- 25:52Speaker 1: What would the Diamonbacks is inexcusable.
- 25:54Speaker 2: Okay that especially the way they started out against the
- 25:56Speaker 2: Diamondbacks to win the first two, they should have won
- 25:59Speaker 2: one of the next two.
- 26:00Speaker 3: Well again, yeah, you want to win two out of three.
- 26:02Speaker 3: You always do, and you really want to win two
- 26:04Speaker 3: out of three in the series like against the Diamondbacks
- 26:07Speaker 3: because head, the head's a tie breaker and he's got
- 26:10Speaker 3: and the National League is going to be very very close,
- 26:14Speaker 3: and as we said numerous times, there's going to be
- 26:16Speaker 3: a playoff caliber nationally team that's not going to make
- 26:19Speaker 3: the playoffs. So yeah, now you want to win two
- 26:22Speaker 3: out of three against the Diamondbacks. And I had that
- 26:24Speaker 3: chances and they not so much yesterday. More on on
- 26:28Speaker 3: Tuesday night they left, they were all for ten with
- 26:30Speaker 3: runners on base and can't do that. But I mean
- 26:33Speaker 3: if you said to me, and that's going to be
- 26:34Speaker 3: twenty one and eleven, I would take that.
- 26:37Speaker 2: Ask him if Soto is like the suspense of fifteen
- 26:40Speaker 2: and could he turn into that where it just becomes
- 26:41Speaker 2: a monster midway through the year for this team or what.
- 26:44Speaker 3: You can ask him that, but I think he's going
- 26:46Speaker 3: to tell you as great as sess for this was
- 26:49Speaker 3: for us, and he was great. He's the only reason
- 26:51Speaker 3: we got there. One Soto is much better, is a
- 26:55Speaker 3: much much better player. The one thing after this first month,
- 26:58Speaker 3: and will revisit this every month. The American League is
- 27:01Speaker 3: as bad as I thought it was gonna be when
- 27:03Speaker 3: the season started.
- 27:04Speaker 2: Yanks are one and a half up and they have
- 27:05Speaker 2: only like seventeen wins.
- 27:07Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's it's a bit of a struggle.
- 27:09Speaker 2: And look to lose against the Orioles the way they
- 27:13Speaker 2: did this week, I just.
- 27:15Speaker 1: There, I are missing pieces and we knew that coming
- 27:17Speaker 1: into the season, but we're seeing it now. Yeah.
- 27:20Speaker 3: And it's funny you talk about Baltimore, Alex here's a
- 27:26Speaker 3: team that was on the com with all these young players.
- 27:29Speaker 3: It seems like they're stuck in neutral. They didn't do
- 27:32Speaker 3: anything in the offseason. They let Burns go to Arizona,
- 27:36Speaker 3: and that's not good. So, I mean, what is their
- 27:39Speaker 3: commitment to getting over the hump and beating beating the
- 27:44Speaker 3: Yankees and beating the other teams in the American League
- 27:46Speaker 3: and let's face it, the American's wide open. There will
- 27:49Speaker 3: spend some money. They could get there.
- 27:52Speaker 2: They could, I mean the Red Sox, I thought they
- 27:54Speaker 2: were strugglings, are there now they're right in second place
- 27:57Speaker 2: and that's.
- 27:58Speaker 3: Yeah, but what sixteen?
- 28:00Speaker 1: Yeah exactly, it's it's so.
- 28:03Speaker 3: How good are they?
- 28:05Speaker 2: And the West looks like I mean, I guess yash
- 28:07Speaker 2: are doing one, but in Seattle you can never count
- 28:10Speaker 2: Seattle out. But the fact of the A's are like
- 28:12Speaker 2: in the running here is very interesting to me because
- 28:14Speaker 2: they're not usually in their running. Yeah, ob yeah, And.
- 28:17Speaker 3: Don't get me wrong, season still needs to formulate. We're
- 28:20Speaker 3: only a month in and we'll check again. Usually, you know,
- 28:24Speaker 3: another checkpoint will be Memorial Day weekend then, But.
- 28:27Speaker 2: With these twelve, the way they've arranged it, we'll only
- 28:30Speaker 2: face these guys twelve times a year.
- 28:32Speaker 1: That's changed everything to me.
- 28:33Speaker 2: Oh, without without question, you need have the peddle of
- 28:35Speaker 2: medal on every division run.
- 28:36Speaker 1: Even this weekend against the Rays. They have to win
- 28:38Speaker 1: two en three.
- 28:39Speaker 2: I mean, because in September, what happens in April its
- 28:42Speaker 2: county now and that never used to be the case.
- 28:45Speaker 3: Well, look at the game on Sunday, seven to one
- 28:48Speaker 3: bomb the sixth thing, the metsa beating the Washington Yes,
- 28:52Speaker 3: it's April twenty seventh, but that that loss that they
- 28:58Speaker 3: should not That's the game they shouldn't have lost. Come October,
- 29:01Speaker 3: come September twenty seventh, and they were a game behind
- 29:04Speaker 3: the playoff spot or a game out of first place.
- 29:07Speaker 1: I know how much in that game.
- 29:09Speaker 3: I know, I'm going to remember April twenty seventh, twenty
- 29:11Speaker 3: had a seven to one lead, you know, in a
- 29:13Speaker 3: bomb in the sixth inning. You know.
- 29:16Speaker 2: By the way, I noticed you picked up on my
- 29:18Speaker 2: Sandy Kofax reference being a baseball and it's true. I mean,
- 29:22Speaker 2: I'd feel like Jewish players should be honored a little
- 29:24Speaker 2: bit more. And Sandy Kofax did take time away, which
- 29:28Speaker 2: was what unheard of at the time.
- 29:30Speaker 1: Was that what it was too, It.
- 29:31Speaker 3: Was kind of unheard of at the time. Obviously, living
- 29:34Speaker 3: in the East, we obviously know because of the large
- 29:38Speaker 3: Jewish American population. We knew that about Yan Kidpoor. But
- 29:42Speaker 3: it was a nineteen sixty five World Series and he
- 29:48Speaker 3: was scheduled to pitch on Yan kidpor and it was
- 29:50Speaker 3: a game on Yan Kidpore, and he being a very
- 29:53Speaker 3: faithful and religious Jew, and I give him toll cred
- 29:58Speaker 3: for it said I'm not pitching today. So that the
- 30:01Speaker 3: Twins beat Drysdale Hall of Fame pitcher, and then they
- 30:06Speaker 3: beat Kofax. They were down to nothing. They won the
- 30:09Speaker 3: two games at Metropolitan State in Minnesota. They went back
- 30:12Speaker 3: to LA and then the great Dodger pitching got to them.
- 30:16Speaker 3: They won the three games. Kofax won a game, and
- 30:19Speaker 3: then Kofax the Twins at Metropolis Stay in one game six.
- 30:26Speaker 3: I believe Bob Allison and the Twins had a really
- 30:28Speaker 3: good hitting team, hit a home run. He made a
- 30:33Speaker 3: great catch in that series. I don't think it was
- 30:35Speaker 3: in that game Bob Allist did. And on two days
- 30:37Speaker 3: rest the great and Alex I mean great Sandy Kofax
- 30:43Speaker 3: shout out the Twins to nothing at the Metropolitan STATEUM
- 30:47Speaker 3: in Minnesota. And what's the game they lead through? That was?
- 30:52Speaker 2: I know here that he stood in front of the
- 30:54Speaker 2: score point at Dodger Stamm pointing to it.
- 30:55Speaker 1: There's a famous photograph with that. I think that was
- 30:57Speaker 1: at Well.
- 30:58Speaker 3: In nineteen sixty five, threw a perfect game against a
- 31:01Speaker 3: perfect game. He threw an no hither in sixty two
- 31:05Speaker 3: against the expansion Mets, the mets first month of existence.
- 31:10Speaker 3: He threw another no hither in sixty three, another one
- 31:13Speaker 3: in sixty four, and then he threw the perfect game
- 31:16Speaker 3: in sixty five against the Cubs. The interesting thing about
- 31:19Speaker 3: that game is the Dodgers only got one hit in
- 31:22Speaker 3: the game and they won the game one nothing. The
- 31:25Speaker 3: Dodgers got one run on one hit, and they didn't
- 31:28Speaker 3: get that hit to the bottom of the seventh inning.
- 31:30Speaker 3: Lou Johnson I believe got that base it. He was
- 31:33Speaker 3: an outfielder for the Dodgers. But that game is famous
- 31:37Speaker 3: because the great Scully was calling the game as only
- 31:41Speaker 3: he could. And if you listen to, like the last
- 31:44Speaker 3: couple of outs in the ninth inning, he chronicled, it's
- 31:48Speaker 3: nine to forty two in the City of the Angels,
- 31:52Speaker 3: and he threw a curveball that's fouled away two and
- 31:55Speaker 3: two to Harvey Keane, a batting champion manager of the
- 31:59Speaker 3: Milwaukee Brewer's team that went to the World Series in
- 32:02Speaker 3: eighty two. He one of the great Look it up
- 32:06Speaker 3: Alex listened to the ninetheending of that game, and Kofax
- 32:10Speaker 3: struck him out in at nine forty six. He Pacific time.
- 32:15Speaker 3: That's when it was complete. Famous game. Famous because there's
- 32:18Speaker 3: only one hit in the entire game.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Amazing.
- 32:21Speaker 2: Well, maybe I'll dig that call up and we could
- 32:23Speaker 2: play it at some point and have our listeners have
- 32:26Speaker 2: some reference to it. But it's being of announcers yesterday
- 32:33Speaker 2: to end the show here. Wow, Joe mcletty retiring. Guy's
- 32:38Speaker 2: a young guy. Did not expect this. You've been in
- 32:42Speaker 2: my ear about this for a while now. To send
- 32:45Speaker 2: them both out.
- 32:46Speaker 1: The door, very very weird to me.
- 32:49Speaker 3: Well, he says that he's been thinking about it for
- 32:52Speaker 3: two or three years, talking with his wife about it.
- 32:56Speaker 3: I don't know if that's accurate or not accurate. He's
- 32:59Speaker 3: an excellent colic. Dom and Taylor. I mean, he's been
- 33:01Speaker 3: with Madison Square on network for twenty seven years, eight
- 33:04Speaker 3: years with the Islanders and then they switched them over
- 33:06Speaker 3: to the Rangers for the last nineteen.
- 33:08Speaker 2: I remember back in the day. I'm a going to
- 33:09Speaker 2: remember Howie Roseen, Joe Nikalitia. Okay, that's a lot.
- 33:12Speaker 3: I go back, Well, you go back and h I
- 33:18Speaker 3: don't know if he was pushed out. I don't know
- 33:20Speaker 3: if he did this on his own. I don't know.
- 33:22Speaker 3: If he thought in the middle of the season that
- 33:24Speaker 3: he was going to retire and just kept under the
- 33:25Speaker 3: wraps because he didn't want to take anything away from
- 33:29Speaker 3: the Sam Rose in Retirement tour. Maybe I don't know,
- 33:34Speaker 3: but I heard that MSG is trying to get younger
- 33:36Speaker 3: guys in there, and I think I know I've told
- 33:38Speaker 3: you if you don't be surprised if you see a
- 33:41Speaker 3: change with but Scoring. I mean, I've heard that, and
- 33:46Speaker 3: I've heard Butcher's fight is fighting back against it.
- 33:49Speaker 2: Well, I have to see by the way we started
- 33:51Speaker 2: with the Nicks, but he was they weren't the only
- 33:52Speaker 2: winner this week.
- 33:53Speaker 1: Shout out to our friend Frank Morano. And there's the
- 33:56Speaker 1: reason why I'm mentioning this.
- 33:57Speaker 2: He's break won the Staten Island seat council in District
- 34:01Speaker 2: fifty one. So you know, I think we should all
- 34:04Speaker 2: root for tomorrow in the Kentucky derby Sandman, because if
- 34:08Speaker 2: you've listened to the show, he opens up with Enter Sandman,
- 34:11Speaker 2: Let's go with Samon. Maybe he's the favorite because Frank
