Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Andrew Dickens: Andrew Bayly did the right thing
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: How many times, now, be honest with me, how many times,
- 0:02Speaker 1: in the middle of an intense argument with a stupid workmate,
- 0:04Speaker 1: have you been tempted just to box their leather ears
- 0:08Speaker 1: thump some sense into them? Obviously you don't. In fact,
- 0:11Speaker 1: you know that you can't even touch them. You can
- 0:13Speaker 1: glower and scowl and talk with a low, harsh intensity,
- 0:17Speaker 1: but no touchy touchy, and no raised voices. Unfortunately, Andrew
- 0:20Speaker 1: Bailey touchy, touchied and raise his voice. But what is
- 0:24Speaker 1: good about this is that he knew it. Sometimes you
- 0:27Speaker 1: have to hold yourself to account, is what he said
- 0:29Speaker 1: at his press conference when he resigned. What a great line.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Wouldn't you love more people to hold themselves to account.
- 0:35Speaker 1: Some might say that he was just trying to get
- 0:37Speaker 1: urgency and getting things done, but that's not so. These
- 0:39Speaker 1: are uncivil times. We need to be civil. We need
- 0:42Speaker 1: to remember that basic courtesy and respect for others must exist.
- 0:45Speaker 1: If the strength of your argument is so strong, you
- 0:48Speaker 1: will not need to shake some sense into anyone. And
- 0:51Speaker 1: I think the world would be better if we have
- 0:52Speaker 1: people who were not so inclined to call anyone they
- 0:54Speaker 1: disagree with a moron, or to threaten them if they
- 0:57Speaker 1: have a different point of view. Now there are some
- 1:00Speaker 1: we know who who are making political capital out of
- 1:02Speaker 1: the gap between Friday's resignation and Monday's announcement. Personally, I
- 1:06Speaker 1: think that's petty. He just spent a week in pulling
- 1:09Speaker 1: himself together to face the music, and when he faced
- 1:11Speaker 1: the music and told us that he was resigning, you
- 1:14Speaker 1: can see how close he was to tears. I think
- 1:16Speaker 1: Andrew Bailey acted like a fool with his staff member,
- 1:19Speaker 1: but he acted in his resignation with honor, and the
- 1:22Speaker 1: next version of Andrew Bailey will be even better. He's
- 1:24Speaker 1: got a ton of experience. But this leaves a problem
- 1:27Speaker 1: for the National Party. They're running out of experienced talents.
- 1:32Speaker 1: For more from Early Edition with Ryan Bridge, Listen live
