- 0:00Speaker 1: This is like probably the most I'll have on one Zoom.
- 0:02Speaker 1: This is cool.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Yeah. I feel like we're doing something proper now. I know.
- 0:09Speaker 1: Are we? Well, you know what? I said teens, right?
- 0:11Speaker 1: I said if I get on here and you guys
- 0:13Speaker 1: are a bunch of 30-plus-year-olds, I'm going to piss myself laughing.
- 0:16Speaker 3: There you go. I'm happy to have you.
- 0:19Speaker 1: Back, first of all. The band called Teens. Please tell me.
- 0:23Speaker 1: I need context for this name. Because my joke is,
- 0:26Speaker 1: what are you going to call yourself? Adults? Like when
- 0:28Speaker 1: you get to like, you know.
- 0:30Speaker 2: We should be called that now.
- 0:31Speaker 1: It's too late.
- 0:32Speaker 2: You just got to stick with it now.
- 0:35Speaker 1: So how did it come about? What's, where did it originate?
- 0:38Speaker 4: It used to be a lot longer band name, but
- 0:41Speaker 4: then I just shortened it to teens and it's just
- 0:43Speaker 4: kind of stuck.
- 0:44Speaker 2: And then I was just kind of like, thought, you know,
- 0:47Speaker 2: all band names are a bit shit. So we'll just
- 0:49Speaker 2: stick with it.
- 0:50Speaker 1: You can have fun with band names. I was talking
- 0:51Speaker 1: to another one before. um that's all cat piss and
- 0:54Speaker 1: i'm like come on now i need to know that please.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Do that that's great.
- 0:58Speaker 1: And oh and they've they've really got their shit down
- 1:00Speaker 1: pat you know they were there yeah album names i'm
- 1:02Speaker 1: like oh thoroughly i was impressed and um those those
- 1:06Speaker 1: band name generators they're quite fun or like you know
- 1:09Speaker 1: pick your your birth date month and year and it's
- 1:11Speaker 1: like whatever character i'm like cool shit in there or
- 1:15Speaker 1: you know album name or a song name yeah i'm
- 1:18Speaker 1: all i'm down for that as a songwriter myself and
- 1:20Speaker 1: musician i um thoroughly enjoy.
- 1:22Speaker 5: That so yeah but i think this is the music
- 1:28Speaker 5: that i was enjoying and listening to as a teenager
- 1:30Speaker 5: so i guess um as if the shoe fits gonna
- 1:34Speaker 5: wear it.
- 1:34Speaker 1: You know absolutely are you are you the youngest of
- 1:37Speaker 1: the band are you donno i'm gonna take a stab
- 1:43Speaker 1: you know parents gave you a good education in proper
- 1:45Speaker 1: music that's that's how it goes how old is yourself
- 1:49Speaker 1: dare i ask i am 30 Oh, so you're not even,
- 1:54Speaker 1: I've got millennials. I've got a 20 and a 26
- 1:56Speaker 1: year old and they do my head in. I'm like,
- 1:58Speaker 1: I don't understand you. They're a good value. So, um,
- 2:04Speaker 1: so yes, your parents must've done well. So what was
- 2:08Speaker 1: the long version? I'm going to hear that first before
- 2:10Speaker 1: we go on. Otherwise it's really cringe.
- 2:11Speaker 2: Yeah. It used to be called Teens of Thailand.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Teens of Thailand.
- 2:19Speaker 2: Which is this rip straight from a Desert Sessions song.
- 2:22Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:23Speaker 4: And it was that for a few years, and then
- 2:26Speaker 4: it just got shortened to Teens.
- 2:28Speaker 3: And it's just.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Stayed like that. I can guess, you know, that can
- 2:34Speaker 1: provoke imagery of all sorts, Teens of Thailand.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Exactly.
- 2:37Speaker 1: To let your mind run wild, it's like, ah, Thai food.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Thai food. You know, the Thai restaurant names. That's what
- 2:47Speaker 1: comes to my mind. Yeah. Okay. Well, that's all right.
- 2:50Speaker 1: Not as exciting as I was thinking. I'm like, we
- 2:53Speaker 1: also have our hot male from when we were only 16. Oh, totally.
- 2:57Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:57Speaker 1: It's embarrassing though. That's funny. So you guys are on
- 3:02Speaker 1: the bill for big sound. That sounds pretty impressive. You
- 3:05Speaker 1: guys have been doing this thing for a little while,
- 3:07Speaker 1: have you?
- 3:07Speaker 2: Yeah, it's been around for a while with this lineup.
- 3:11Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 3:12Speaker 2: It's been a few years. A few years now.
- 3:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:16Speaker 1: But, yeah, it's.
- 3:16Speaker 4: Been kicking around for a bit before then, but it's
- 3:19Speaker 4: been like a steady, yeah, with this line-up, a steady
- 3:22Speaker 4: thing going on for a while.
- 3:24Speaker 2: Cool.
- 3:24Speaker 1: And whereabouts are you guys located?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Hobart, mainly.
- 3:29Speaker 1: Oh, you're from there. The Apple Island. Okay. That's it.
- 3:33Speaker 2: It's very cold.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:34Speaker 1: So spread around all Tassie, are you?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:37Speaker 4: Well, I'm up north at the moment, but kind of
- 3:40Speaker 4: in between Launceston and Hobart, yeah.
- 3:43Speaker 1: And yourself, Alex, where are you in Hobart? Are you?
- 3:45Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 3:46Speaker 3: Down South as well.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Yeah. Nice. And what about you, John? What about you?
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Hobart boy. Oh, nice. Nice. And so do you guys
- 3:52Speaker 1: get to the mainland much? That's awesome. That big sound
- 3:54Speaker 1: of included yourselves. That's really, I love that. Yeah.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Pretty couple of times a year.
- 4:00Speaker 1: A lot of the time you guys get, you missed
- 4:01Speaker 1: off a lot of bills, you know, um, you know,
- 4:03Speaker 1: Hobart and.
- 4:03Speaker 3: For, uh, for, uh, you know, um, for a band budget.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 4:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 4:09Speaker 1: I have, I have, I'm no ideas girl. A budget
- 4:12Speaker 1: airline just for musicians because it would be a doable thing.
- 4:17Speaker 1: Any pilots out there listening, like, jump on board. I
- 4:21Speaker 1: think that would be so cool. That's affordable.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Artist-run airlines.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Everybody gets a boat.
- 4:26Speaker 5: That's it.
- 4:27Speaker 1: I mean, no one misses out on what they want. Yeah.
- 4:30Speaker 1: That would be kind of cool. That's one for the
- 4:33Speaker 1: thinking pot.
- 4:34Speaker 3: See what we can do.
- 4:35Speaker 1: For sure. And have you guys played Big Sound before?
- 4:37Speaker 2: No. First time.
- 4:40Speaker 3: That's awesome. Yeah, I've been on once before.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Have you? Yeah. You look very familiar, Alex. I feel
- 4:45Speaker 1: like I've met you somewhere along the line in music
- 4:47Speaker 1: land before.
- 4:48Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Maybe.
- 4:50Speaker 3: I played with Violet Swirls a few years ago up there.
- 4:54Speaker 1: Okay.
- 4:54Speaker 3: That was still a band.
- 4:56Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, no, definitely. I feel like our paths have
- 4:58Speaker 1: crossed at some stage.
- 5:00Speaker 6: Open to Ben commissioning me to do some drums for
- 5:04Speaker 6: their follow-up album.
- 5:06Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, that's great, yeah. And I just pretend to
- 5:10Speaker 1: play drums. I play bass. So sometimes I masquerade as
- 5:13Speaker 1: a drummer in the studio just to like shits and giggles.
- 5:16Speaker 3: You're in the rhythm section.
- 5:21Speaker 1: Drummers and bass players are like this. It's a marriage
- 5:23Speaker 1: made in heaven. And without us. Your girlfriend doesn't dance,
- 5:26Speaker 1: that's what I say.
- 5:27Speaker 3: That's right.
- 5:29Speaker 2: That's good, yeah.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Yeah, you like that one?
- 5:31Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you.
- 5:33Speaker 1: We're keeping the whole, you know, we get so much
- 5:35Speaker 1: shit as bass players, but it's like, man, we're literally
- 5:38Speaker 1: keeping everything together.
- 5:39Speaker 2: Yeah, the glue holding it together.
- 5:41Speaker 1: We are the glue, but it's all right. We've got
- 5:43Speaker 1: broad shoulders, don't we, Donna? We can take that.
- 5:45Speaker 3: We've got broad shoulders now, that's for sure.
- 5:49Speaker 1: That's all right.
- 5:49Speaker 3: That wider.
- 5:51Speaker 1: Yeah. I've got extendable shoulders when needed. That's funny. So
- 5:58Speaker 1: you guys are obviously playing Big Sound. Are you doing
- 6:00Speaker 1: two gigs through the week? What are the venues that
- 6:03Speaker 1: you've been given?
- 6:04Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got Blutes.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Sorry? What was that, sorry?
- 6:10Speaker 3: Blutes on the Wednesday night.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Okay, yep.
- 6:13Speaker 6: Yeah, at 10 and Tomcat on the Thursday.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Night at 8.30.
- 6:20Speaker 1: Great venue, Tomcat. One of my favourites.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Is it?
- 6:22Speaker 1: It's the iconic little dive bar it's so dingy but
- 6:25Speaker 1: it's great yeah okay cool yeah looking forward to it
- 6:28Speaker 1: yeah no it's.
- 6:29Speaker 2: All it's all it's all like new to us so
- 6:31Speaker 2: yeah keen.
- 6:32Speaker 1: To yeah oh the valley's it's beautiful alex you might
- 6:35Speaker 1: yeah probably been there before like it's just it's a
- 6:38Speaker 1: plethora of these little dive bars and sometimes it's the
- 6:41Speaker 1: back alley i grease our bar up for example it's
- 6:43Speaker 1: the back alley of the back alley and it's just
- 6:45Speaker 1: such a cool venue i really like it yeah walk
- 6:48Speaker 1: in there and it's there's literally an old vintage car
- 6:50Speaker 1: hanging from chained up somewhere at the front or lit
- 6:53Speaker 1: up and it's, it's just a very cool place. So yeah.
- 6:56Speaker 1: And Tom, as I said, another one, you walk in,
- 6:58Speaker 1: it's just like, I'm sure they're fire hazards, but you know,
- 7:01Speaker 1: we don't. They are definitely. It's like, I don't want
- 7:09Speaker 1: to be in that nightclub. I don't want to make
- 7:11Speaker 1: that news article. Are you guys hoping to see anyone
- 7:15Speaker 1: in particular when you're up here?
- 7:17Speaker 3: Um, Yeah, we've been checking out their bands. I'm keen
- 7:22Speaker 3: to see special features.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Okay, yeah. Yeah.
- 7:26Speaker 3: Yeah, get along to see them.
- 7:28Speaker 1: Yeah. What about yourself, Sean or Donna? Are you anyone
- 7:30Speaker 1: that strikes your eye that you've given a listen to?
- 7:32Speaker 2: I've seen them before, but they're really cool. Public figures.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Okay, yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 2: I think they're from Melbourne.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah, nice.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Yeah, they're really cool, kind of post-punk-y stuff.
- 7:46Speaker 3: And who else was it?
- 7:47Speaker 2: Stimpy's I was just listening to. They're kind of cool.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I've seen them on a lineup before. They are cool. Yeah. Yeah.
- 7:54Speaker 2: And there's another person who was a, I was thinking,
- 7:58Speaker 2: I can't remember now. I forgot. No, I've lost it.
- 8:04Speaker 2: Millie Strange.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Okay, yeah.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I think another one from Melbourne. I was just like
- 8:08Speaker 2: listening before. It's like pretty weird, dark, folky stuff. Okay, cool.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Something different.
- 8:13Speaker 2: It was cool.
- 8:14Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, nice, nice, nice. And so what kind
- 8:18Speaker 1: of genre would you describe yourselves as fitting into? Punk, alt-rock? Yeah.
- 8:23Speaker 2: Like post-punk?
- 8:25Speaker 1: Hybrid. Figures on rock. Yeah.
- 8:28Speaker 5: I feel like post-rock is a bit of a cop-out
- 8:31Speaker 5: answer sometimes, but if I'm pressed a bit harder, maybe
- 8:35Speaker 5: noise rock.
- 8:36Speaker 1: Okay, yeah.
- 8:37Speaker 3: I say that we're in a noisy post-punk band, but
- 8:41Speaker 3: genres are tricky.
- 8:42Speaker 1: Are they?
- 8:43Speaker 3: To point people down the right avenue, I guess that's... you.
- 8:46Speaker 1: Know, just invent your own. If you can't, you know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: find your identity with one or the other.
- 8:51Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And that's the cool, you know, I love it when
- 8:53Speaker 1: genre is like mixing and you get that influence. And
- 8:56Speaker 1: I think that's, you know, where we've come to. It's,
- 8:58Speaker 1: I mean, every note's been played before, let's face it,
- 9:00Speaker 1: you know, and every style is, you know, has been
- 9:03Speaker 1: done and, and that's what elevates, you know, new music and,
- 9:06Speaker 1: and makes it, you know, awesome is that people going
- 9:10Speaker 1: outside and taking that risk you know of like putting
- 9:12Speaker 1: blues with heavy metal or something you know ridiculous and
- 9:14Speaker 1: it fucking works you know like yeah i love electric
- 9:17Speaker 1: cowboy that shit's hilarious you know i love that and
- 9:20Speaker 1: there's another one um i think they're actually from israel
- 9:23Speaker 1: and i think her her last site or something like
- 9:27Speaker 1: that it's the name of the band the heavy shit
- 9:30Speaker 1: but they involve like you know um footstop blues like
- 9:34Speaker 1: roots like music and it It's wild. I highly recommend
- 9:38Speaker 1: checking it out. I think it's her last slide. Fucking
- 9:41Speaker 1: cool as shit. Yeah, cool. And I love that. And
- 9:44Speaker 1: I think when, you know, you've got bands that are
- 9:47Speaker 1: doing that and taking those risks and just putting it
- 9:50Speaker 1: out there and seeing what happens, it's where the good
- 9:52Speaker 1: shit is.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Yeah, definitely. Mixes up.
- 9:54Speaker 1: Yeah. it's interesting it does it doesn't it you know
- 9:57Speaker 1: it's all around the globe and especially a lot in
- 10:00Speaker 1: europe because you know it's the as we know the
- 10:01Speaker 1: motherland of like all things heavy and i was chatting
- 10:04Speaker 1: to um you know a dude the other day and
- 10:07Speaker 1: he was he's electro um you know 90s like electro
- 10:10Speaker 1: music with heavy metal i'm like fuck yeah we all
- 10:12Speaker 1: love the metals i'm like That was awesome. And it's like,
- 10:17Speaker 1: fast like drums.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah.
- 10:21Speaker 1: That's just cool. And stuff like that, you know, that's
- 10:23Speaker 1: to be, you listen to it audibly, you know, but live,
- 10:27Speaker 1: it's like, oh, it goes through the whole, like a
- 10:29Speaker 1: body experience. And I remember my first time experiencing that
- 10:33Speaker 1: as I walked into the tier of being asked to
- 10:35Speaker 1: cover a gig for, I think it was, who killed
- 10:37Speaker 1: the prom queen? And I'm like, oh, now I know
- 10:39Speaker 1: why people love this shit. And then I got to
- 10:43Speaker 1: see Behemoth, you know, later in the year and I
- 10:45Speaker 1: was like, that was performative, that was awesome. So I
- 10:48Speaker 1: love having zero clues sometimes when I'm walking into and
- 10:51Speaker 1: just being thoroughly impressed. It's plain canvas, you know, knowing.
- 10:55Speaker 3: Not to have those expectations. Yeah, for sure.
- 11:01Speaker 1: Yeah, and that's why, you know, things like Big Sound
- 11:03Speaker 1: is awesome because if you go there with that kind
- 11:04Speaker 1: of mindset, you're going to be impressed, you know, and
- 11:07Speaker 1: if you've got the stage presence and you guys are
- 11:09Speaker 1: loving what you're doing and the audience follows suit, it's
- 11:12Speaker 1: a bit hard not to, I think. Yeah, music love
- 11:14Speaker 1: is everywhere. Have you found, like, your audiences are pretty receptive, obviously,
- 11:18Speaker 1: at home?
- 11:18Speaker 3: Yeah, I think we've had good responses lately.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure.
- 11:21Speaker 3: We're definitely throwing ourselves into it. So it's true, you know,
- 11:26Speaker 3: people follow along.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, and it's like, you know, it's hard. When
- 11:29Speaker 1: people smile, you're happy. It's hard. It's infectious, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 1: and it's the, I think, with the energy you put out,
- 11:34Speaker 1: and it sounds cliche, but for most of the part,
- 11:36Speaker 1: it really is. It is true.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Yeah. I wouldn't mind a little rest between gigs, you know. Okay.
- 11:44Speaker 3: You don't get that.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So you guys are pretty full time. Are you doing
- 11:48Speaker 1: stuff down there?
- 11:50Speaker 3: What's that? Playing quite often?
- 11:51Speaker 1: Playing gigs, yeah. Like you do.
- 11:52Speaker 3: We played last weekend.
- 11:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:55Speaker 3: And then the next gigs are the big sound gigs.
- 11:56Speaker 1: So we've got a couple gigs off the road. Yeah.
- 11:58Speaker 1: So just like do some writing and stuff, I guess,
- 12:00Speaker 1: you know, if you're in studio doing production and stuff.
- 12:03Speaker 3: We're in the studio, so that continues. Yeah.
- 12:05Speaker 1: Yeah. and that can get laborious and time-wise and but
- 12:09Speaker 1: you know and you know obviously it's a you're not
- 12:12Speaker 1: making money while you're in the studio but in a
- 12:13Speaker 1: sense you kind of are because you know the time
- 12:15Speaker 1: you put in obviously it shows.
- 12:16Speaker 6: Up i think we're getting pretty close the end of
- 12:19Speaker 6: these sessions so um you know you've got to kind
- 12:22Speaker 6: of put a cap on it sometimes.
- 12:24Speaker 1: Sometimes you've got to walk away from your shit because
- 12:26Speaker 1: i'm like i know i've got 60 versions of one
- 12:28Speaker 1: so yeah and to hand it over to like you
- 12:32Speaker 1: know to your producer or your um yeah master and
- 12:35Speaker 1: that's i think really important when you're not going to
- 12:38Speaker 1: let go and leave someone finalize that and you'll be
- 12:42Speaker 1: okay with that because as a creative you know piece
- 12:44Speaker 1: it can be hard for some to you know to
- 12:47Speaker 1: let go of that you know control over.
- 12:49Speaker 3: Your yeah sometimes you think it's going to be easier
- 12:52Speaker 3: but then um it turns out it's not it's often
- 12:54Speaker 3: a bit of a battle to get through.
- 12:56Speaker 1: It is it is and um yeah and i think
- 12:59Speaker 1: too like you know a lot of you know, because
- 13:01Speaker 1: there's no one-step pathway to success these days, which is fantastic.
- 13:05Speaker 1: But having that, you know, that indie, you know, go,
- 13:08Speaker 1: and you've got a lot of bands that are doing
- 13:10Speaker 1: everything themselves, you know, all of it, which is great, again,
- 13:13Speaker 1: and you've got control over, you know, your piece and
- 13:17Speaker 1: where it goes and how it's used and whatnot. But
- 13:19Speaker 1: I think it can get overwhelming when not knowing when
- 13:22Speaker 1: to step back and go, oh, I probably should let
- 13:23Speaker 1: someone else do that.
- 13:24Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it's definitely like a case of overcooking
- 13:27Speaker 4: something sometimes.
- 13:29Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah. I think I've definitely been.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Like, it's a funny, I find balance as well.
- 13:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:36Speaker 1: I always say, you know, more skin in the game
- 13:41Speaker 1: and definitely it's, um, and it is because if you
- 13:43Speaker 1: get that input, it might just be like one little
- 13:45Speaker 1: thing that someone else hears or sees that, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you overlook or you don't have that. And that's what's missing.
- 13:50Speaker 1: And it can, you know, turn a good song into
- 13:53Speaker 1: a fucking great song sometimes. Yeah, exactly. So it's, um,
- 13:56Speaker 1: it's really important, I think, to have that openness, which,
- 13:59Speaker 1: You know, as creative people, sometimes, you know, it's not
- 14:03Speaker 1: easy for everyone to do. And having that balance of
- 14:05Speaker 1: being able to, you know, be an artist and do
- 14:08Speaker 1: your thing on stage, but also have that business sort
- 14:09Speaker 1: of mindset too.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:12Speaker 1: Socials and the promoting. It's a fine line. And I
- 14:17Speaker 1: think that's why sometimes you stay in a garage and some,
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, end up at Big Sound. Yeah.
- 14:21Speaker 2: It's a win.
- 14:24Speaker 3: We're scraping through. We're going to come up and visit.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Someone's liked what they've heard somewhere along the way. Yeah,
- 14:29Speaker 1: it's good. On a tour from Melbourne to Tassie one time. Yeah. No,
- 14:36Speaker 1: that's awesome. I'm really– are you guys the only Tassie
- 14:39Speaker 1: band on the bill that you know, or is.
- 14:40Speaker 3: There a couple? No, there are two more acts.
- 14:42Speaker 6: We've got Grace Chia and the other escapes me right now.
- 14:47Speaker 3: Can you guys back me up?
- 14:49Speaker 2: Ooh. Is it Wit? Wit?
- 14:52Speaker 1: No.
- 14:52Speaker 2: It's something– I'm cooking it too.
- 14:55Speaker 1: Is it weird? Yeah, right. Big Sound's been really great
- 14:57Speaker 1: in being very inclusive, which is so refreshing and really
- 15:01Speaker 1: good because sometimes, you know.
- 15:02Speaker 3: It's a nice status line up this year for sure.
- 15:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and a platform that gives, you know, bands like
- 15:06Speaker 1: yourselves that are up and coming, you know, that chance
- 15:08Speaker 1: to be seen. It might be, you know, in a
- 15:11Speaker 1: different scene. Obviously, you know, your local scene, you guys
- 15:13Speaker 1: have been doing the good things. But, yeah, I think
- 15:16Speaker 1: it's really important just for venues as well as, you know,
- 15:19Speaker 1: bands that Big Sound have. back again this year and
- 15:21Speaker 1: hopefully are a permanent feature on the calendar for Brisbane.
- 15:26Speaker 6: Yeah, look, I think we're super pleased to head up
- 15:29Speaker 6: and represent Tassie. We're super privileged to be chosen. We're
- 15:33Speaker 6: competing against super acts for sure. No, through the sort
- 15:39Speaker 6: of lovely online application process.
- 15:41Speaker 1: Oh, that's so cool. Yeah.
- 15:43Speaker 6: The, you know, like considering times are so tough for
- 15:48Speaker 6: venues and artists, I don't think like the scene is
- 15:52Speaker 6: really hitting a peak in my opinion.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Definitely thriving and local stuff too, which is great. Yeah.
- 15:58Speaker 3: It's really mind blowing.
- 15:59Speaker 6: Kiz is the other Tasmanian accent.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Oh, Kiz.
- 16:01Speaker 1: Yeah. Nice. I have heard of them before.
- 16:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I'm keen to see them.
- 16:04Speaker 6: Yeah, I haven't caught them before. So there you go.
- 16:05Speaker 6: We can head up to Brizzy and catch them for
- 16:08Speaker 6: the first time.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Yeah. Excellent. I'm hoping we'll catch them.
- 16:12Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Carry around the valley like a, you know, the metal. Yeah. No,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I'm just, I'm very Southern Gold Coast, Northern East, South Wales, so. Oh, yeah? Yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 1: Brisbane land is in my scope. It's not that far away.
- 16:27Speaker 1: I just complain about having to drive.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 16:30Speaker 1: It's really not that far. Yeah. It's over an hour.
- 16:33Speaker 1: It's like, hmm. I shouldn't complain at all. Oh, my
- 16:38Speaker 1: job is so bad. I have to review Dead Kennedys
- 16:41Speaker 1: on a school night at the tube. Worst job in
- 16:44Speaker 1: the world. I know. I'm very blessed to do what
- 16:48Speaker 1: I do. And I absolutely love, you know, new music too.
- 16:51Speaker 1: Like speaking to people like yourselves, it's sometimes some of
- 16:54Speaker 1: the best stuff. It's really cool. And so my girlfriend's
- 16:57Speaker 1: here and I just end up skipping past my front
- 16:59Speaker 1: door when I don't know what she's doing. I have
- 17:05Speaker 1: weird friends, but that's why. Yeah, no, that's cool. So
- 17:10Speaker 1: you guys have obviously, have you got an album out?
- 17:13Speaker 1: Do you say an EP that you put out? Or
- 17:15Speaker 1: was it in the process?
- 17:16Speaker 6: Yeah, I put out a second album in September last year.
- 17:20Speaker 3: So it's still pretty fresh. So we're running stuff from that.
- 17:24Speaker 6: And then we've also got a, bunch of new material
- 17:27Speaker 6: that's sort of finishing up so.
- 17:29Speaker 3: We're starting to test test the waters there with.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That excellent well hopefully i'll be having a chat with
- 17:34Speaker 1: you guys in the near future with the new.
- 17:36Speaker 3: Album yeah wishes i mean it's not far off we're
- 17:38Speaker 3: getting close.
- 17:40Speaker 1: Yeah that's all in your bones those old teenage bones
- 17:45Speaker 1: maybe that's what we can call it teenage bones there
- 17:50Speaker 1: you go again it leaves the options open i spoke
- 17:54Speaker 1: to um cool leonie leo leonie from the epic metal
- 17:58Speaker 1: artist and he just put out a new album and
- 17:59Speaker 1: it's called generation and i'm like because what is it
- 18:03Speaker 1: she could get me cancelled dude like yeah yeah the
- 18:08Speaker 1: mind of a 12 year old boy of course i'm
- 18:09Speaker 1: gonna be like but yeah no i i thoroughly love
- 18:14Speaker 1: that shit you know when you've got it invokes like
- 18:17Speaker 1: you know imagery and the sorts of and it kind
- 18:20Speaker 1: of gets us too seriously No, no. That's the core
- 18:23Speaker 1: definition of people.
- 18:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:26Speaker 1: My punk is good. We bring for the giggles, for sure.
- 18:30Speaker 3: That's it. Yeah, definitely.
- 18:32Speaker 1: Yeah, awesome. And so obviously more live shows back home
- 18:35Speaker 1: after Big Sound? Or just planning on chilling a bit?
- 18:37Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got one. Yeah, we've got one.
- 18:40Speaker 1: All right.
- 18:41Speaker 3: Yeah, we've got a big run. So we start in
- 18:43Speaker 3: Hobart on 24th of October. So we've got a show
- 18:46Speaker 3: there in October. Which will be sweet.
- 18:49Speaker 6: And then we head to Geelong, Melbourne, Bendigo, Sydney. So
- 18:55Speaker 6: we're supporting Foo Fighters in Sydney.
- 18:57Speaker 1: Oh, how good. So I'm really good friends with Full
- 19:01Speaker 1: Flower Moon Band, which are.
- 19:02Speaker 3: Yeah, they're on that tour. Yeah.
- 19:04Speaker 1: They're so cool. I love that. Those guys had a
- 19:07Speaker 1: mad run there. I'm supporting Primus and Queens of Stone
- 19:09Speaker 1: Age as well.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Oh, that's sick.
- 19:12Speaker 1: You guys are supporting the Foo Fighters. That's fucking... That's
- 19:15Speaker 1: something to sneeze at. Do you know if Dave's like,
- 19:18Speaker 1: how did you guys get that gig? Because the girls
- 19:20Speaker 1: weren't too sure either. They're like, oh, we don't know
- 19:22Speaker 1: if you.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I was cold. We were invited, yeah. Sean got a cold. Yeah.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Yeah, we got a message.
- 19:28Speaker 4: On our band camp from Gerard from Frontier Touring.
- 19:33Speaker 1: Yeah, Frontier Touring.
- 19:35Speaker 2: Yeah, he bought like a couple copies of our first record.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Nice.
- 19:40Speaker 4: And yeah, he liked it. And then he sent one
- 19:43Speaker 4: up to the Foo Fighters and they dug it. So
- 19:45Speaker 4: he sent a message.
- 19:46Speaker 1: That's so cool. I imagine that's what happened. You guys
- 19:49Speaker 1: have been obviously handpicked because I know he's quite supportive
- 19:53Speaker 1: of the local live upcomings, which is the best.
- 19:55Speaker 3: Yeah, it's good to know.
- 19:57Speaker 1: And handpicked from his selection, which.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Is so fucking cool.
- 20:00Speaker 5: Yeah, it's great.
- 20:02Speaker 1: That's definitely one. It's pretty weird, but it's great. I mean,
- 20:05Speaker 1: what a platform. And just to have that on your...
- 20:08Speaker 1: as a band and an artist yourselves didn't go, I've
- 20:12Speaker 1: supported the Foo Fighters. Like it doesn't get any better
- 20:14Speaker 1: than that. But yeah, that's cool as shit. Yeah.
- 20:24Speaker 6: And then we, and then we push on and we'll
- 20:26Speaker 6: do Sydney, a couple of shows in Sydney after that
- 20:28Speaker 6: and head up to Brizzy, do some more shows around Brizzy.
- 20:31Speaker 3: So yeah, we've got 12 or 14 dates or something.
- 20:34Speaker 3: We'll hopefully, I'm on the Gold Coast.
- 20:38Speaker 1: There's plenty of venues that would love to have you
- 20:40Speaker 1: as well. Yeah.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Yeah, we've got a show at Vinnie's, so I've never
- 20:46Speaker 4: been there.
- 20:47Speaker 2: So, yeah, we're super keen for that.
- 20:48Speaker 1: I just feel like I'm going to get hugged every
- 20:50Speaker 1: time I go to, like, walk in the venue.
- 20:51Speaker 3: It's a bit sad.
- 20:54Speaker 1: It's not a venue. It's just a shitty location. I just, like,
- 20:56Speaker 1: freak out. Yeah, right. Don't ask me if I'm– I
- 20:58Speaker 1: haven't got cigarettes. Yeah. Okay. They get my hair cancelled.
- 21:04Speaker 1: It's only Thursday afternoon. You're a long waker, aren't you, guys?
- 21:10Speaker 3: Yeah, fair enough.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Sometimes I'm like, why leave me unsupervised? It's not a
- 21:15Speaker 1: good idea sometimes. It's fun. It's fun. I wouldn't have
- 21:21Speaker 1: it any other way. We've got plenty of room to
- 21:23Speaker 1: move and misbehave just a little bit.
- 21:26Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 21:27Speaker 1: I was a corporate slave for 20 odd years, you know.
- 21:31Speaker 1: This is great.
- 21:32Speaker 3: Make up for lost time.
- 21:34Speaker 1: I was like the naughty child. I literally am like, don't,
- 21:37Speaker 1: I will encourage you when I get everyone else in trouble.
- 21:39Speaker 1: And I'm like, always, always, always. Lucky was very good
- 21:45Speaker 1: at my job. So I'm like, what are you going
- 21:47Speaker 1: to do?
- 21:47Speaker 2: Fire me.
- 21:50Speaker 1: The sassiness of that was I worked in sales for
- 21:52Speaker 1: a long time and the mad, mad world of advertising
- 21:54Speaker 1: and being good. And it's like, What are you going
- 21:57Speaker 1: to do, fire me? I'm top of your fucking sales board.
- 22:01Speaker 1: Because I run away with a whiteboard marker after drawing
- 22:03Speaker 1: a big dick on my supervisor's whiteboard screen. I'm giving
- 22:09Speaker 1: up my sentence now. I was so naughty. I'm like, wow,
- 22:11Speaker 1: I don't know how I was. Yeah, anyway, I'm moving on.
- 22:15Speaker 1: I'm someone else's problem now. There you go.
- 22:17Speaker 2: It's all good then.
- 22:20Speaker 1: You can't restrict a creative person in that, even though
- 22:22Speaker 1: I had bills to pay and children raised, but you know. Yeah.
- 22:25Speaker 1: This is the end result of doing that. It's all
- 22:31Speaker 1: for the goodness. Well, yeah. So that's awesome. So you
- 22:33Speaker 1: guys are playing Blue and The Bright Side in Big Sound,
- 22:37Speaker 1: which is.
- 22:37Speaker 3: Blue and Tomcat.
- 22:39Speaker 6: And then I think we're looking at another gig at
- 22:43Speaker 6: Miami Marketo that's still on the calendar.
- 22:45Speaker 3: So we're, yeah.
- 22:47Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. The Fridays. It's either hot or it's cold
- 22:51Speaker 1: and it just crammed in. But great bands on Showman,
- 22:53Speaker 1: mind you. Yeah. As a band, yeah, it is.
- 22:56Speaker 3: But it's just– Yeah, looking forward to it. Yeah, good
- 22:58Speaker 3: food too.
- 22:59Speaker 1: That's awesome.
- 23:00Speaker 3: And we might sneak on a last-minute showcase, but we'll see.
- 23:04Speaker 3: So there you go for now. Yeah, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, there's still a couple, like, kind of floating around,
- 23:09Speaker 2: so we'll just wait and see if they go ahead
- 23:11Speaker 2: or not.
- 23:12Speaker 1: You've got some cool power now. You go, hey, do
- 23:14Speaker 1: you want us or not?
- 23:18Speaker 3: We're instant.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Reference, yeah, just call Casually Cool Dave and ask him.
- 23:22Speaker 1: That's so cool. Matt, you're going to use that shit
- 23:25Speaker 1: to your advantage. I'm with a group of lates who
- 23:28Speaker 1: you know, not what you know. Okay.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Just start dropping that line. We'll just talk to Dave,
- 23:33Speaker 2: see the records.
- 23:34Speaker 1: Absolutely. I'll be like, I do this shit.
- 23:37Speaker 3: We prefer to call Josh.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Freezy, eh? Actually, I, um, I spoke to Temple of Mars, oh,
- 23:45Speaker 1: Temples on Mars, sorry. Um, the, uh, the other day,
- 23:48Speaker 1: did an interview with them and Freezy actually played, um,
- 23:51Speaker 1: a couple of tracks on their last album they did.
- 23:52Speaker 2: Okay.
- 23:53Speaker 1: Yeah, they're from the UK, so.
- 23:57Speaker 3: Right.
- 23:58Speaker 1: What weapon? Yes, yes, yes, yes. Actually, one of the, oh, Ham, Hamish,
- 24:06Speaker 1: he was, got a spot running the Foo Fighters at
- 24:09Speaker 1: one stage. He's an Aussie drummer.
- 24:13Speaker 3: Oh, who's that?
- 24:13Speaker 1: Hamish Paul. Yeah, Ham Sammich. Ham Sammich. That's what they
- 24:17Speaker 1: call him. So Taylor and Dave started calling him that, yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 2: He was drumming for him?
- 24:22Speaker 1: Yeah, it was, I think he just filled in one
- 24:25Speaker 1: time for them.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 24:26Speaker 1: Yeah. Huge. Yeah, that was massive. Yeah, and still when
- 24:30Speaker 1: Taylor was in the band too.
- 24:31Speaker 3: Oh, yeah, wow.
- 24:33Speaker 2: Yeah, that's great. Definitely, definitely. I mean, they're new drummers.
- 24:37Speaker 3: He rips.
- 24:37Speaker 1: Yeah, who is it?
- 24:39Speaker 2: Ilan or?
- 24:40Speaker 1: Something like that.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Ilan or?
- 24:43Speaker 1: Yeah, he raps.
- 24:44Speaker 5: Yeah, crazy.
- 24:45Speaker 4: And like the open hand sort of drumming looks wild.
- 24:48Speaker 1: Yeah. I think even Dave's got that style too. Like,
- 24:51Speaker 1: I mean, he started himself off like blues drumming and
- 24:53Speaker 1: like basic stuff and, and to be able to do
- 24:57Speaker 1: that and then like ham it up as well. It's like, yeah, no,
- 25:01Speaker 1: it's good.
- 25:02Speaker 3: Love it. Yeah.
- 25:04Speaker 1: My brother, he was a drummer and he was like,
- 25:06Speaker 1: he loved his double kick pedal, but then he, his
- 25:09Speaker 1: last stuff he was doing, cause he's no longer with us,
- 25:11Speaker 1: bless his sweet soul. Um, he was able to be
- 25:14Speaker 1: a drummer, like just on the, um feather sticks for
- 25:17Speaker 1: like he's made like blues roots and and it was
- 25:19Speaker 1: a blues band which he actually got to meet dave
- 25:22Speaker 1: growlin he walked into their venue one time he's like
- 25:24Speaker 1: oh shit this dude looks like me because he had
- 25:27Speaker 1: long hair that was a cool story to tell but
- 25:29Speaker 1: yeah no that's great you're able to do that i
- 25:31Speaker 1: think like change up you know um from being like
- 25:33Speaker 1: hardcore like full-on and it's all about your style.
- 25:36Speaker 2: Yeah it's a massive shift hey.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Yeah you've got the skill you know obviously you know
- 25:40Speaker 1: you can do it yeah it's like some of our
- 25:42Speaker 1: great metal heavy artists have, you know, inspired in the world,
- 25:45Speaker 1: classically trained on, which I love. I think that's the
- 25:50Speaker 1: good shit as they say. Yeah. Well, thank you so
- 25:53Speaker 1: much for having a chat with us today. Heavy. It's
- 25:54Speaker 1: been a genuine pleasure. You guys have been awesome. And
- 25:57Speaker 1: it's been this little screen I've had for a while.
- 25:59Speaker 1: So it's been great. You guys are absolute gems. I
- 26:03Speaker 1: like it. Good sports. So we are looking forward to
- 26:05Speaker 1: seeing you in a couple of weeks at the big
- 26:08Speaker 1: sound in Brisbane land. And I am definitely, we'll be
- 26:10Speaker 1: seeing more of you guys. I'm, tick that for the girl. Yeah,
- 26:15Speaker 1: we might even do another interview once your album comes
- 26:17Speaker 1: out and closer to, you know, support the.
- 26:19Speaker 3: Let you know.
- 26:21Speaker 2: Sounds good. Yeah, thanks for having us.
- 26:24Speaker 1: We love supporting the good stuff here.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Cheers.
- 26:28Speaker 1: Take care. Enjoy. Thanks.
