Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: Hello, everybody, Welcome back to Inside the Tape.
- 0:11Speaker 2: On Inside the Birds, I'm Jeff Mosher alongside Adam Kaplan,
- 0:15Speaker 2: and when we're talking inside the Tape, we're breaking down
- 0:17Speaker 2: tape of the Eagles last game. We bring in the
- 0:19Speaker 2: godfather of tape breakdown, Greg Cosell and Greg listen. I
- 0:24Speaker 2: don't think anybody's expecting a lot of sugarcoating here and
- 0:28Speaker 2: flowers and daisies about the Eagles defensive performance in their
- 0:31Speaker 2: thirty four to seventeen loss to the Giants. We'll get
- 0:35Speaker 2: into some of the breakdowns that you saw on tape,
- 0:38Speaker 2: but it's sort of like adding insult to insult because
- 0:42Speaker 2: it was announced Monday on his Instagram that Zadarius Smith,
- 0:45Speaker 2: who I think was playing pretty decently for the Eagles,
- 0:48Speaker 2: announced his sudden retirement.
- 0:49Speaker 1: So, Adam, Greg.
- 0:51Speaker 2: This is a development that is not good for a
- 0:53Speaker 2: defense that's already come out.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Bad game and Adam in general.
- 0:57Speaker 2: You know, we still got a couple of weeks before
- 1:00Speaker 2: theoretically before three Smiff comes back, so it's gonna it's
- 1:03Speaker 2: gonna be a little bit of a roll the dice
- 1:05Speaker 2: here from a depth standpoint for the next few weeks.
- 1:08Speaker 3: Yeah, you got that you got after the buy.
- 1:10Speaker 4: The Eagles are hopeful that Smith will be back, but
- 1:12Speaker 4: the big thing is the trade deadline is three weeks
- 1:14Speaker 4: from today. And look, the Eagles have so many needs
- 1:19Speaker 4: corners by far the one, the number one, like, there's
- 1:21Speaker 4: no close second number one. Look edge now, it wasn't
- 1:25Speaker 4: so much depth to start the season. It's just the
- 1:27Speaker 4: quality of the past rush was not good enough. Now
- 1:29Speaker 4: Smith's hurt Juderi Smith, and they were not expecting this.
- 1:32Speaker 4: He retired. He informed them on on Monday morning that
- 1:37Speaker 4: he was he was he was retiring and and now
- 1:41Speaker 4: I I don't know that this had anything to do
- 1:42Speaker 4: with it. I thought it was interesting how Ojeli started
- 1:44Speaker 4: over him. Yeah, that was the last game. I thought
- 1:47Speaker 4: that was odd. Uh and he played fewer snaps than
- 1:50Speaker 4: we'd expect. But moving forward here, this leads them in
- 1:54Speaker 4: a tremendous halt because Patrick Johnson's therefore Ousha is a
- 1:58Speaker 4: smaller player. But he showed he could still play. But
- 2:01Speaker 4: you can't play them a ton of snaps. Hunt, as
- 2:04Speaker 4: we talked about in the off season and training camp,
- 2:06Speaker 4: not there as a pass rusher. That still held to
- 2:07Speaker 4: be true. It's just when you go through this thing.
- 2:11Speaker 4: It's there an OJILARI is you don't want him starting.
- 2:16Speaker 4: You should be playing a lot, maybe a third of
- 2:19Speaker 4: the snaps at most. So yeah, they got a problem here,
- 2:21Speaker 4: And I know the fans are clamoring for Campbell to
- 2:24Speaker 4: play edge with. Greg could attest to the way they've
- 2:28Speaker 4: used him in the box to help against the run.
- 2:30Speaker 4: But he's not been really much of a pass rusher.
- 2:32Speaker 4: So either you blitz more. Because Smith was a factor.
- 2:35Speaker 4: I mean, he did a good night. It wasn't so
- 2:37Speaker 4: much sacks, which is everything that he gave them, Jeff,
- 2:39Speaker 4: So as they sent him back to you, they've got
- 2:41Speaker 4: a problem, which we knew about.
- 2:43Speaker 3: It's now got worse to remember they signed Smith because
- 2:45Speaker 3: it was an issue.
- 2:46Speaker 2: Yeah, and Greg, it seems like with Zadarius Smith, who
- 2:50Speaker 2: had some good size and we talked about when they
- 2:52Speaker 2: signed him, even the ability to move inside.
- 2:54Speaker 1: And play in nickel if they wanted to.
- 2:57Speaker 2: It looks like right now the Eagles have three or
- 3:00Speaker 2: four situational pass lightweight situational pass.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Yes, they's not a killer, not like that one guy
- 3:05Speaker 1: that they usually.
- 3:06Speaker 2: Have who can get you twelve to fifteen sacks, a
- 3:09Speaker 2: lot of pressures and just a very difficult one on
- 3:11Speaker 2: one matchup.
- 3:12Speaker 5: Well, it also raises the question, guys of going forward,
- 3:15Speaker 5: how they're going to defend their run. I mean, it's
- 3:18Speaker 5: easy to talk about the pass rush, and there's no question. Look,
- 3:21Speaker 5: there have been many cases as you go back through
- 3:23Speaker 5: the years in the NFL where two hundred and forty
- 3:25Speaker 5: pound guys can rush the quarterback because they've got speed,
- 3:28Speaker 5: they've got quickness, they've got some twitch to them. But
- 3:31Speaker 5: now you get into the run game, and so what
- 3:34Speaker 5: it raises a question to me is are we going
- 3:36Speaker 5: to see them essentially play nickel almost as their foundational defense.
- 3:42Speaker 5: And you know, again, now you do have run issues there,
- 3:45Speaker 5: but if they play that five to two front, you're
- 3:48Speaker 5: playing on the edge with guys who are two hundred
- 3:50Speaker 5: and forty pounds, and that's not the ideal situation you
- 3:54Speaker 5: want to be in. You know, Vic Fangio knows that
- 3:56Speaker 5: he's been in the legal long time, you know, So
- 3:59Speaker 5: it's just I'm curious to see what happens going forward.
- 4:03Speaker 5: It's just, you know, two hundred and forty pound edge
- 4:06Speaker 5: players are hard in the run.
- 4:09Speaker 2: Speaking in the run game, Yeah, and by the way,
- 4:10Speaker 2: after that debacle against the Giants. The Eagles are twenty
- 4:13Speaker 2: six against the run at one hundred and thirty four
- 4:16Speaker 2: yards per game, twenty fifth in rushing yards allowed per
- 4:21Speaker 2: run at four point six six one area they've already struggled.
- 4:25Speaker 5: And by the way, they have eight sacks in six games.
- 4:29Speaker 5: Think about in twenty twenty two, and you know when
- 4:31Speaker 5: they went to the Super Bowl lost, but that year
- 4:34Speaker 5: they had close to seventy sacks. I think they had
- 4:36Speaker 5: something like twenty five sacks on third down, which was
- 4:39Speaker 5: far and away the most in the league. You know,
- 4:42Speaker 5: I mean, right now they only have eight sacks. They
- 4:44Speaker 5: are not really generating a lot of pressure. And also
- 4:47Speaker 5: getting back to the run game, one could make the
- 4:49Speaker 5: argument and and you know, I'll be honest, I was
- 4:53Speaker 5: not awake at the time that this happened, but I
- 4:57Speaker 5: saw it on tape obviously, when the Giants got the
- 4:59Speaker 5: ball with minutes and fifty seconds left and they had
- 5:02Speaker 5: five plays in that drive where they lined up with
- 5:05Speaker 5: three tight ends and Bellinger as the I formation fullback
- 5:09Speaker 5: and they just physically handled the Eagles defense. That may
- 5:13Speaker 5: have been to me the most surprising thing about that
- 5:16Speaker 5: game to quite honestly, you know, and that's I'm not
- 5:19Speaker 5: saying that teams are going to line up now in
- 5:21Speaker 5: three tight ends and just run the ball, but you know,
- 5:25Speaker 5: running the ball is part of the NFL offense.
- 5:27Speaker 4: And Greg, one more thing on that you noted more
- 5:31Speaker 4: than once that Cooper Dejen they've he's been sort of
- 5:33Speaker 4: an add in defender against the run, and you pointed
- 5:36Speaker 4: out to us where it clearly was not working at
- 5:38Speaker 4: times because he's smaller, bigger for a defensive back.
- 5:40Speaker 3: He's he's not.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Right, but he's but he's not two hundred and forty pounds, right.
- 5:44Speaker 3: Are they still doing it?
- 5:46Speaker 5: Yeah? I mean, if you're gonna play nickel, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 5: the fact is you're slot depending on how you line
- 5:53Speaker 5: up your front. Okay, And I learned this from people
- 5:55Speaker 5: that really understand fronts better than I do. Defensive people,
- 5:59Speaker 5: sometimes depending on your front, your slot is a B
- 6:03Speaker 5: gap defender in the run game, and you really don't
- 6:06Speaker 5: want your slot to be a B gap defender in
- 6:08Speaker 5: the run game. So we'll see. I'm just raising the question.
- 6:12Speaker 5: This is not me saying good, bad, and different. I
- 6:14Speaker 5: don't know the answer to these questions. Just you know,
- 6:16Speaker 5: defensive coaches who know a lot more about defense and
- 6:19Speaker 5: alignment than I do. They have to figure this out.
- 6:22Speaker 5: But the fact is is it's hard to play in
- 6:25Speaker 5: this league in the run game if your edge players
- 6:27Speaker 5: are two hundred and forty pounds.
- 6:28Speaker 4: And Greg and Jeff, as we said it back to
- 6:31Speaker 4: Jeff here, not having Jalen Carter healthy, he misses a game, right,
- 6:34Speaker 4: obviously that was a major problem. He has not been healthy.
- 6:37Speaker 4: It was the shoulder. Now it's this mysterious heel injury.
- 6:41Speaker 4: When he gets assuming a plays this week, who the
- 6:43Speaker 4: heck knows how he's going to play. They got problems.
- 6:47Speaker 3: Some of it, look, some of it is you just
- 6:49Speaker 3: got to deal with the injury factor. Some of it
- 6:51Speaker 3: is youth.
- 6:53Speaker 4: Some of it is size at certain positions that they've
- 6:55Speaker 4: got bigger challenges than we probably knew.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Starts just just and then we'll get more specific to
- 7:00Speaker 5: But if you had said before the season that based
- 7:04Speaker 5: on what happened a year ago, that this team after
- 7:07Speaker 5: six games and this is why every year is different,
- 7:09Speaker 5: by the way, you know, that's that's just the reality
- 7:11Speaker 5: of the NFL, that the on line would probably be
- 7:14Speaker 5: a bottom half all line in the league. That this
- 7:16Speaker 5: team would not be able to run the ball, that
- 7:18Speaker 5: they would not be able to rush the quarterback, that
- 7:20Speaker 5: they would struggle to stop the run. If you said
- 7:22Speaker 5: that in August, people would have looked at you like
- 7:24Speaker 5: you had three heads. Yes, the way it's played out
- 7:28Speaker 5: through six games, so which all it does is proved
- 7:31Speaker 5: that every year is a new year.
- 7:33Speaker 2: And so and as we you know, get into this
- 7:35Speaker 2: Eagles defense, which we're going to do in part one,
- 7:37Speaker 2: this is a new defense.
- 7:38Speaker 1: This is a defense with a bunch of new starters.
- 7:41Speaker 2: And then obviously when Jalen Carter doesn't play and Quinnon
- 7:44Speaker 2: Mitchell comes out of the game, you're now behind the
- 7:47Speaker 2: eight ball even more. Not saying that's an excuse, but
- 7:49Speaker 2: that is the case. So, Greg, in this game, what
- 7:53Speaker 2: we all said in the pregame show, the only way
- 7:55Speaker 2: the Giants can even stay and have a chance in
- 7:58Speaker 2: this game without Molik Neighbors and without Slayton is if
- 8:01Speaker 2: they're able to run the ball. So the Eagles have
- 8:03Speaker 2: to know the Giants are going to try to run
- 8:05Speaker 2: the ball. And you mentioned that the Giants through place
- 8:07Speaker 2: with a lot of twelve personnel. What was their plan
- 8:10Speaker 2: of attack the Giants?
- 8:11Speaker 5: It's funny you say that because they didn't really run
- 8:14Speaker 5: the ball until that last drive with any real me.
- 8:17Speaker 5: I mean, Scatabo at forty four yards on that final drive,
- 8:20Speaker 5: so up until that point he only had about fifty yards.
- 8:23Speaker 5: It wasn't as if they were grinding away, Jeff. The
- 8:26Speaker 5: run game and you just looked up and said, oh
- 8:29Speaker 5: my god, they're just bounding them. That's not what really happened.
- 8:32Speaker 5: They actually were very good throwing the ball, even though
- 8:35Speaker 5: they didn't throw the ball with high volume. When they
- 8:38Speaker 5: did throw the ball, they threw it really well. And Dart, surprisingly,
- 8:43Speaker 5: I'm sure for many was very good on third down.
- 8:47Speaker 5: All that was a problem in the game, and there
- 8:49Speaker 5: were a number of mental mistakes. There were a number
- 8:52Speaker 5: of players who had played really well through five games
- 8:55Speaker 5: who just did not play well in this game. And
- 8:57Speaker 5: you know sometimes that happens, particularly with young players. You know,
- 9:01Speaker 5: Mcooba did not have a good game. I thought his
- 9:03Speaker 5: eyes were not in the right place a few too
- 9:05Speaker 5: many times. I thought Campbell for the first time, there
- 9:08Speaker 5: are times where I thought he wasn't certain as to
- 9:10Speaker 5: what his responsibility was. I just thought that, you know,
- 9:15Speaker 5: some young players did not play well. And the reality
- 9:18Speaker 5: is after thirteen snaps, the outside corners of Nickel were
- 9:21Speaker 5: Ringo and Jackson, and that's not the position you ideally
- 9:25Speaker 5: want to be in.
- 9:27Speaker 4: But one thing before we get started, Dart round the
- 9:30Speaker 4: ball a lot most design, a mixture of design, and yeah,
- 9:33Speaker 4: and you're on his own, okay.
- 9:35Speaker 5: Well, obviously that twenty yard scramble which ended the first possession.
- 9:38Speaker 5: I don't know if you plan on showing that, Jeff,
- 9:41Speaker 5: but you know, obviously that was a third and eight
- 9:44Speaker 5: play and it ended up being a touchdown, and you know,
- 9:48Speaker 5: he left the pocket up the middle. Bond was in position,
- 9:51Speaker 5: you know, but it's hard. I mean, Bond's a really
- 9:53Speaker 5: good athlete, but you know, it's still a quarterback who's
- 9:56Speaker 5: got some athletic ability and you know that stuff gets hard.
- 9:59Speaker 5: But there were plenty of other pass plays that were
- 10:01Speaker 5: potentially problematic as well. So it was not the run
- 10:05Speaker 5: game that really, to my way of watching the tape anyway,
- 10:08Speaker 5: that for the first three quarters was the big, big
- 10:11Speaker 5: factor in the game. As far as scatterball I'm talking.
- 10:13Speaker 2: About right right, Yeah, No, I didn't do the dart
- 10:16Speaker 2: one when we take a look at the clips, only
- 10:18Speaker 2: because they replayed it on TV quite a bit. I
- 10:20Speaker 2: think he came fine, he pump faked, and once he
- 10:23Speaker 2: got through, he pump faked, Bond got him off balance
- 10:26Speaker 2: and then was able to run it through.
- 10:27Speaker 1: But to greg to your point, there were some.
- 10:31Speaker 2: Really unpredictable at least for me Adam sure to pass
- 10:36Speaker 2: heroes for the Giants, including including a guy they elevate
- 10:40Speaker 2: from the practice squad in Little Jordan Humphrey. This is
- 10:45Speaker 2: probably I'm gonna guess you're gonna say that this is
- 10:47Speaker 2: probably not the best show of tape for both Killey
- 10:49Speaker 2: Ringo and the Dori Jackson.
- 10:52Speaker 5: Yeah, you know, but again, this is what happened in
- 10:54Speaker 5: the game. I mean, you know, we're not going to
- 10:55Speaker 5: overdo it. I don't think that's necessary. But the reality
- 10:58Speaker 5: is it was they were playing with guys who we know.
- 11:02Speaker 5: Ringo is not an NFL starting corner. That's just a
- 11:05Speaker 5: reality of tape, and we know Jackson probably at this
- 11:08Speaker 5: point in his career is not either. So you ended
- 11:10Speaker 5: up playing after thirteen snaps when Mitchell and out with
- 11:13Speaker 5: two guys who should not really be starting. You know,
- 11:16Speaker 5: and again what people always have to remember, and you know,
- 11:21Speaker 5: you guys talk to You've been around you, guys have
- 11:22Speaker 5: been around I mean, I've been around a little longer
- 11:24Speaker 5: because I'm older, but it's still NFL players. You know,
- 11:27Speaker 5: it's always easy to look at the Giants that, oh
- 11:29Speaker 5: it's the Giants. They stink, right, you know, their NFL players.
- 11:32Speaker 5: You know, these guys are there for a reason.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Yep, yep.
- 11:37Speaker 2: Anything from a personnel or matchup standpoint that jumped out
- 11:40Speaker 2: to you eleven twelve thirteen percent of Nickel base that
- 11:44Speaker 2: that you thought was noteworthy, Greg.
- 11:49Speaker 5: You know, not not necessarily. I mean, you know, I'm
- 11:51Speaker 5: trying to remember, is there something in particular that was
- 11:54Speaker 5: in my notes Jeff.
- 11:54Speaker 2: That I that I'm no, I was just asking, Yeah,
- 11:57Speaker 2: and really, you know, well here's one thing that sort
- 11:59Speaker 2: of from your notes, but also sort of this continues
- 12:02Speaker 2: to be vic Fangio feeling like he has to blitz
- 12:05Speaker 2: a little bit more.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Well, yeah, yeah, last year, and I feel like in.
- 12:09Speaker 2: The second half, maybe we'll see it on the on
- 12:12Speaker 2: the clips, he probably had to blitz.
- 12:13Speaker 1: He got burned by a few blitzers this time.
- 12:15Speaker 5: Yeah, And and normally his MO with the Eagles anyway
- 12:19Speaker 5: has been when he feels that the defense is not
- 12:22Speaker 5: necessarily working ideally the way he'd like it to he
- 12:25Speaker 5: normally increases his blitz frequency in the second half. That's
- 12:29Speaker 5: we've seen him do that with the Eagles. Now again,
- 12:32Speaker 5: you have to feel comfortable doing that, you know, And
- 12:34Speaker 5: and sometimes you do it anyway just because you feel
- 12:38Speaker 5: you need to make a play, you know. And and
- 12:40Speaker 5: the reality is Darden made some really good throws in
- 12:43Speaker 5: this game. But he's still a little frenetic. I mean,
- 12:46Speaker 5: and you know that watching the tape and you're you're
- 12:49Speaker 5: hoping he can get a little more frenetic, but then
- 12:51Speaker 5: you got to tackle him.
- 12:52Speaker 2: Yeah, so I know you had some notes. We'll look
- 12:54Speaker 2: at it in a second on both Ringo but also mcooba.
- 12:56Speaker 2: Mccooba seemingly playing a little.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Better in the run game, yeah, than he is in coverage,
- 13:02Speaker 1: fair to say.
- 13:03Speaker 5: Yeah, and it showed up in this game. I mean,
- 13:05Speaker 5: he's still a factor in the run game just because
- 13:07Speaker 5: he plays downhill with such tenacity and competitiveness. But in
- 13:11Speaker 5: this game, I mean the perfect example that was the
- 13:15Speaker 5: Robinson thirty five yard touchdown which ended the second possession.
- 13:20Speaker 5: I just I watched that play over and over again
- 13:22Speaker 5: because I wanted to make sure that I felt that
- 13:25Speaker 5: I understood the coverage, and it really looked like cover
- 13:29Speaker 5: one to me as I watched it and watched it
- 13:31Speaker 5: and watched it, and they rushed five, and Macouba just
- 13:35Speaker 5: looked uncertain, you know. He initially looked to match Robinson
- 13:39Speaker 5: and then he kind of turned him loose, And of
- 13:41Speaker 5: course what happened was Dart moved around and hit Robinson
- 13:44Speaker 5: who was wide open, you know. But Macoba just to
- 13:47Speaker 5: me looked like he was unsure of what his coverage
- 13:50Speaker 5: responsibility was.
- 13:52Speaker 2: Hey, you know that one guy in the group chat
- 13:54Speaker 2: who hit a five leg parlay Week one and he
- 13:57Speaker 2: wouldn't shut up about it for the rest of the season.
- 14:00Speaker 6: It sounds like kaplan, right, Yeah, yeah, it.
- 14:01Speaker 5: Could be him.

- 16:05Speaker 2: in a second. I want to start off very early
- 16:08Speaker 2: in the game. I believe this is the first possession
- 16:10Speaker 2: and someone we just mentioned, little Jordan Humphrey is going
- 16:15Speaker 2: to make a thirty four yard that year.
- 16:19Speaker 5: Yeah. This this was a jump ball, right and I
- 16:22Speaker 5: believe was against ring Oh yep, bottom of the screen. Yeah,
- 16:25Speaker 5: this was just I mean this was again second reaction
- 16:28Speaker 5: movement my dart. He moved, well, he didn't, actually didn't.
- 16:32Speaker 5: He just he threw it up to the one on
- 16:34Speaker 5: one and you know what, it's matchup football, you throw
- 16:38Speaker 5: it up. One thing about Humphrey is he's big, so
- 16:41Speaker 5: you know he throws it up to guy and he
- 16:44Speaker 5: goes this is not terrible by Ringo there. Actually, you know,
- 16:49Speaker 5: it's it's matchup football. He threw it up to his
- 16:51Speaker 5: guy and gave him a chance.
- 16:53Speaker 1: Right now.
- 16:54Speaker 2: I believe the Giants got a field goal I thought
- 16:56Speaker 2: on their on their first possession.
- 16:57Speaker 1: I can't no.
- 16:58Speaker 2: That was theession with the dark twenty yard touchdown right right.
- 17:02Speaker 2: But then on their second possession they come back and
- 17:04Speaker 2: I would like you to diagnose this twenty six yard
- 17:07Speaker 2: play because I think this is going to illustrate some
- 17:09Speaker 2: of the things you've talked about with Ringo and the
- 17:11Speaker 2: HIF fluidity.
- 17:11Speaker 1: This is through jan Dale Robinson.
- 17:14Speaker 3: So this is yards.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Twenty six yoter. Yeah. Yeah, this is where he beats
- 17:19Speaker 5: him on the crossher he's matched on number one into
- 17:23Speaker 5: the boundary and you can see if you go back
- 17:25Speaker 5: a little bit here and we can see it again.
- 17:27Speaker 1: Bottom of the bottom of the screen for those.
- 17:29Speaker 5: Right right right. So Robinson is actually an outside receiver here.
- 17:35Speaker 5: And you know the thing about Ringo is it he
- 17:38Speaker 5: almost stops his feet, which is you know, of course
- 17:41Speaker 5: you can never do as a corner, right, and he's
- 17:44Speaker 5: just he's not in good position. Yeah, And how.
- 17:48Speaker 1: Far off he is at the break point right here?
- 17:50Speaker 5: Yeah, with the receiver by the way, that is not
- 17:52Speaker 5: a burner, right. I mean, Robinson's game is not built
- 17:54Speaker 5: on speed. Got quick though, He's on quickness. Yeah, he's
- 17:59Speaker 5: not exactly.
- 18:00Speaker 3: That's why.
- 18:00Speaker 4: That's why as soon as the Giants got I remember
- 18:02Speaker 4: talking to someone there, They're like, gadget plays slot. He's
- 18:06Speaker 4: not gonna play outside for us, and that's pretty much been.
- 18:08Speaker 5: Yeah, and here he is outside just because the Giants,
- 18:11Speaker 5: you know, they needed him. Well possibly, if you're gonna
- 18:15Speaker 5: play him and you're playing a ton of twelve personnel,
- 18:18Speaker 5: which they did, then he's gonna have to line up outside.
- 18:21Speaker 5: I mean that's just the real as him too.
- 18:23Speaker 2: But yeah, yeah, this is twelve personnel because you can
- 18:25Speaker 2: see an inline tight end and you can see THEO
- 18:27Speaker 2: Johnson in the slot. But right, and by the way,
- 18:30Speaker 2: THEO So for those watchouts, Cooper de Gene is on
- 18:33Speaker 2: THEO pretty good here, and you can see the difference
- 18:35Speaker 2: because they're running what looks like, I guess at the
- 18:37Speaker 2: fifty and there's just so much more space that Ringo
- 18:41Speaker 2: is giving you.
- 18:42Speaker 1: No, Robinson, I never.
- 18:44Speaker 5: Know what's in a corner's head, and I don't like
- 18:45Speaker 5: to speak about that because you know, you just don't know.
- 18:47Speaker 5: I don't speak to what's in players' heads. But watching
- 18:50Speaker 5: Ringo here, it just has the look of a corner
- 18:53Speaker 5: that's just struggling with his confidence, like he's uncertain because
- 18:57Speaker 5: he's a he's he's obviously a very good straight line athlete,
- 19:01Speaker 5: you know, and he's very good on special teams. But
- 19:05Speaker 5: you know you're dealing with the guy in Robinson that's
- 19:08Speaker 5: quick but not fast. And by the way, great freeze,
- 19:11Speaker 5: don't move it.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Yeah, I was just right here right here, yep.
- 19:15Speaker 5: I mean that's that's just really bad body position, right yeah.
- 19:19Speaker 2: That looks like a corner who's afraid of getting beat deep,
- 19:22Speaker 2: so he's playing way off across.
- 19:24Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. So again, like I said, I don't know
- 19:26Speaker 5: specifically what's in his head, but he does not look like,
- 19:30Speaker 5: you know, a confident guy right there. And actually this
- 19:31Speaker 5: wasn't a very good throw and he still ended up
- 19:34Speaker 5: being caught.
- 19:35Speaker 2: And then maybe the worst part of it is the
- 19:37Speaker 2: guy catches the ball and Ringo didn't make the tack.
- 19:39Speaker 1: He got five extra yards there, right.
- 19:43Speaker 2: So you mentioned this is the same possession, and you
- 19:45Speaker 2: were talking about Macouba and trying to figure out the
- 19:48Speaker 2: coverage on the thirty five yard play right too.
- 19:50Speaker 5: Right right right to Robinson the touchdown.
- 19:53Speaker 1: Okay, so set this up for what you're looking for.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Here, Yeah, I know that, so you can start to
- 19:58Speaker 5: run it because I I thought this was cover one
- 20:01Speaker 5: behind a five man pressure mm hmm. Okay, So so
- 20:05Speaker 5: so look at mccooba. Okay, as it plays out, you
- 20:07Speaker 5: can see Bonn expand with the back Okay, you can
- 20:10Speaker 5: see Degene is clearly on Whoever, I don't know if
- 20:14Speaker 5: that's Johnson or the outside corner. It's still Mitchell at
- 20:20Speaker 5: this point in the game is matched on the outside receiver.
- 20:23Speaker 5: So Robinson the only guy who can really play him
- 20:26Speaker 5: is mccooby here, and he starts to go inside with
- 20:29Speaker 5: he's almost to me uncertain to start the play. And
- 20:32Speaker 5: then I think, first then I thought, Okay, he knows
- 20:34Speaker 5: he's got to play him, and then Robinson breaks outside
- 20:37Speaker 5: and then macouba just kind of stops and sits there,
- 20:40Speaker 5: So I think he he just had the sense of
- 20:43Speaker 5: being uncertain right from the beginning of the play as
- 20:45Speaker 5: I watched this play over and over again, so you know,
- 20:49Speaker 5: only he could tell you what he was thinking. But
- 20:51Speaker 5: they clearly look like they're playing man, because even even
- 20:54Speaker 5: the Bellinger shallow cross or up top, you see that
- 21:00Speaker 5: is that Ringo, Yeah that would be Ringo. Yeah, r
- 21:03Speaker 5: Ringo's immediately matching him. So everybody looks like they're playing
- 21:06Speaker 5: man behind a five man pressure, right except mccouba, who
- 21:10Speaker 5: looks like I'm not sure what I'm doing.
- 21:12Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like he should be on the three,
- 21:14Speaker 2: which is usually what the safety and to cover one
- 21:16Speaker 2: in that situation with right, Yeah.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Which he's done numerous times this year.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I hate to beat the dead horror. That's why
- 21:22Speaker 2: they brought mccouba here for this. You know, it's supposed
- 21:25Speaker 2: to be.
- 21:25Speaker 5: This is a mental mistake, not a physical mistake.
- 21:27Speaker 3: And then the coop dry he falls down here.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it looks like he gets caught up in the
- 21:31Speaker 2: wash here, which he he threw himself into the wash
- 21:35Speaker 2: and then.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Only actually he steps on mccoba's foot, by the way.
- 21:38Speaker 5: Well then, and then didn't macouba try to uh compensate,
- 21:42Speaker 5: you know, recover and miss the tackle.
- 21:44Speaker 2: I believe somebody missed the tackle after mcca Yeah, yeah,
- 21:48Speaker 2: you're right.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Took the wrong angle, correct, Yeah, it was a bad play.
- 21:54Speaker 5: Again, I don't know, you know what, I think what
- 21:58Speaker 5: we said is true, but you know, to look.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Like right, all right.
- 22:02Speaker 2: Later in the game, second quarter, we're gonna see another
- 22:06Speaker 2: completion to our favorite receiver, little Jordan Humphrey.
- 22:09Speaker 1: This is on a third and six.
- 22:11Speaker 5: Was this the nine yarder? Yes? Yeah, and this is
- 22:15Speaker 5: this is this is the classic Kaylee Ringo situation. It's
- 22:19Speaker 5: third and six. It's a stop route from he's the
- 22:21Speaker 5: boundary X Humphrey on this play. It's on the back
- 22:24Speaker 5: side of trips. And this is a classic case of
- 22:27Speaker 5: what we talked about with Ringo. And you know is
- 22:29Speaker 5: he struggles to stop. He's impressed, which is ideally the
- 22:32Speaker 5: best position to be in, but he just struggles to
- 22:35Speaker 5: stop right and you know, therefore it's complete for nine
- 22:39Speaker 5: yards in a first down on third and six, and
- 22:41Speaker 5: then he tackles them. Yep.
- 22:43Speaker 1: And that is the throttling down that they talk about
- 22:45Speaker 1: where he struggled.
- 22:47Speaker 5: That's where the tight hips you know, come into play.
- 22:49Speaker 4: That was the bit Jeff when we talked about Ringo
- 22:52Speaker 4: three years ago when they draft him, just from the
- 22:54Speaker 4: on field stuff, it was the turning his hips right.
- 23:00Speaker 4: Greg talked about stopping and starting, but we.
- 23:02Speaker 3: Hadn't really talked about talked about the stop in starting
- 23:04Speaker 3: much because he had barely played right.
- 23:06Speaker 4: You just see him in training camp when he would
- 23:08Speaker 4: struggle back with Jersey guys running past him.
- 23:11Speaker 5: But he's just a stiff core athlete and you can't
- 23:15Speaker 5: really fix that can't cannot jack, Greg, We've asked so
- 23:18Speaker 5: many people.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, totally, absolutely, totally, that's it.
- 23:22Speaker 2: So I have both angles of the four yard touchdown
- 23:24Speaker 2: run by Scataboo, and we talked about run defense and
- 23:27Speaker 2: being light and maybe you know, guys getting cleared out.
- 23:31Speaker 2: I think o Ji is the one who's taken out
- 23:33Speaker 2: on the poll here, Greg.
- 23:36Speaker 5: Yeah, but he's cut. You know, he's in a tough spot.
- 23:38Speaker 5: He's in a tough spot because he's coming from outside
- 23:41Speaker 5: in and he can't really set a firm base and
- 23:44Speaker 5: you know, but he still gets blocked obviously.
- 23:46Speaker 1: Yeah, there's the right part. Is that run your power? Yeah?
- 23:50Speaker 5: Power? No, the right tackle is Van Roten? Is it not? Oh?
- 23:53Speaker 1: That's right?
- 23:57Speaker 2: Is the right tackle the one that pulled I thought
- 23:58Speaker 2: it was the right right Van Roten? Yeah, Van Roten
- 24:01Speaker 2: pulls lowers in. Really Born looked like he was there
- 24:05Speaker 2: and just tried.
- 24:06Speaker 5: The other end. One thing on this play, Look at Thomas.
- 24:10Speaker 5: Look how he drove. That's ty Robinson. I believe, yes,
- 24:15Speaker 5: he drove him off the ball. Though he had some
- 24:18Speaker 5: good snaps in this game, but this one he just
- 24:19Speaker 5: got driven right off the ball, which gave Van Roten
- 24:22Speaker 5: all the space he needed to do whatever he wanted it. Now.
- 24:26Speaker 2: Yeah, so Thomas watching a seventy eight left tackle, He's
- 24:29Speaker 2: up against ty Robin and he really pile drives him,
- 24:32Speaker 2: gets him back and that clears the hole for So.
- 24:34Speaker 5: This way, in a sense, Van Roten could do it.
- 24:37Speaker 5: He could take wherever he wanted to go. So let's
- 24:40Speaker 5: say jumped inside, then he would have just taken him
- 24:44Speaker 5: inside and Scattaboo would have gone outside. He had space
- 24:47Speaker 5: to take him wherever.
- 24:48Speaker 1: You know, dictated Yep, yep, good line of blocking there.
- 24:52Speaker 2: It looks like Bourn was so close Greg right, I
- 24:54Speaker 2: mean at the gap and he was there at the ankle,
- 24:56Speaker 2: but probably just not in the best position.
- 24:59Speaker 5: Yeah, he's reaching.
- 25:01Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, Now we've got another catch by Wandale Robinson.
- 25:05Speaker 2: This is third and two and he's gonna go for
- 25:07Speaker 2: fifteen yards. We rewind that again, third and two for
- 25:12Speaker 2: fifteen yards to Wandale. It looks like the uh.
- 25:19Speaker 5: There's a really good there's a good concept because they've
- 25:22Speaker 5: been getting a lot of man So they basically run
- 25:24Speaker 5: a stack release and and a and a illegal rubb
- 25:28Speaker 5: route by Johnson. Johnson doesn't do anything illegal here at all.
- 25:31Speaker 5: But he basically gets a pick and what happens is
- 25:34Speaker 5: is that, uh, who's on the outside here? That's Jacksonville No,
- 25:38Speaker 5: the corner is that?
- 25:39Speaker 1: Oh the corner, Yeah, that's Jackson.
- 25:41Speaker 5: Yeah, so Jackson because he's playing because it's a see
- 25:45Speaker 5: there's a couple of factors here. It's a reduced split
- 25:48Speaker 5: and it's stacked. So Jackson is playing with some depth
- 25:51Speaker 5: and some width, which most people play versus reduced splits
- 25:54Speaker 5: and certainly a stack. So then he gets caught up because,
- 25:58Speaker 5: like I said, it's a natural pick and it's this
- 26:01Speaker 5: is just a really it's a it's a good concept.
- 26:04Speaker 1: Yeah, by the ways, were in base here if I.
- 26:06Speaker 3: If Yeah, that's right outside the yep.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Third and two good point in the Giants person on
- 26:12Speaker 2: the field, yep, they got twelve personnel, So that might
- 26:15Speaker 2: be Ringo now that I think about it, I can't
- 26:17Speaker 2: quite tell from the number.
- 26:18Speaker 1: We'll see it in a second. But really nice throw
- 26:23Speaker 1: there between two defenders that looks like an eight.
- 26:27Speaker 2: So I'm going to say that that's actually you're correct
- 26:29Speaker 2: and that it was Dori Jackson. Yeah, so I guess, uh,
- 26:35Speaker 2: because it started the way the game started, I think
- 26:37Speaker 2: Ringo was the starter in base, well, no, Mitchell was.
- 26:41Speaker 5: Then he came out, well started in base.
- 26:45Speaker 2: Right, but then when Mitchell came out, wasn't it wasn't
- 26:47Speaker 2: it Ringo and de Gene and then it sort of
- 26:50Speaker 2: became Jackson.
- 26:51Speaker 5: That yes, yeah, because they started to take Ringo out.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Yes, right, but that was that was another blitz that
- 26:58Speaker 2: I was referring to that got b because it looks
- 27:00Speaker 2: like Vixen's six here.
- 27:03Speaker 1: Huh.
- 27:06Speaker 2: Not a lot of pressure for a six man rush.
- 27:08Speaker 2: That's not what you want to see when you send six.
- 27:11Speaker 5: They've not really been able to pressure the quarterback, is
- 27:13Speaker 5: you know, as much as you thought they might be
- 27:15Speaker 5: able to. It's been a little bit.
- 27:17Speaker 3: It's been an issuesticuarly this game, Jeff, yep.
- 27:19Speaker 4: Coming in the right side was the area where they
- 27:21Speaker 4: got to win and they did not win.
- 27:23Speaker 2: Yeah, and this was a big play I think against
- 27:25Speaker 2: the blitz as well. Now, Greg, there's an overloaded front here,
- 27:28Speaker 2: so that's loaded front.
- 27:29Speaker 5: Yeah, So yeah, which play is just Jeff.
- 27:31Speaker 1: Theo Johnson for twenty two?
- 27:34Speaker 5: Yeah, just came out of twelve personnel again, even though
- 27:38Speaker 5: it's third and eight, it's twelve personnel. Two tight ends
- 27:41Speaker 5: the Eagles are going to rush five from a loaded front.
- 27:44Speaker 5: It's the first time they showed a loaded front in
- 27:46Speaker 5: the game. Campbell became the fifth rusher here. This was
- 27:51Speaker 5: another play where I thought mccooba's eyes were just not
- 27:53Speaker 5: in the right spot. You know, when you see it
- 27:56Speaker 5: from him facing you, it looks like he's looking inside
- 28:00Speaker 5: and he's got Johnson here. I mean, there's no question,
- 28:03Speaker 5: and he's just slow to react because I don't think
- 28:07Speaker 5: his eyes are in the right spot.
- 28:08Speaker 1: Oh yeah, you're right.
- 28:10Speaker 3: Look at Fico for it. He's beat.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, for those he's he's at the you know,
- 28:15Speaker 2: he starts off in a too too high cover all right,
- 28:18Speaker 2: too high set.
- 28:20Speaker 5: Right, and then they go to cover one behind a
- 28:22Speaker 5: five man pressure.
- 28:23Speaker 1: Top of the screen.
- 28:24Speaker 2: He comes in, he knows he's got to have THEO
- 28:26Speaker 2: and it looks like he's completely taking himself his momentum
- 28:30Speaker 2: in the wrong way.
- 28:31Speaker 5: And he guessed here. Maybe he guessed and thought Johnson
- 28:34Speaker 5: was gonna run an in breaker. Yeah, but you can't
- 28:37Speaker 5: guess like that. Yeah, And actually they did get a
- 28:40Speaker 5: little pressure on Dart, but because Johnson was so clean
- 28:43Speaker 5: on his break, it was you know, he didn't he
- 28:46Speaker 5: didn't have to wait and see he could just get
- 28:48Speaker 5: rid of the football.
- 28:49Speaker 2: I'm glad you said that, because that's probably what's gonna
- 28:51Speaker 2: bother Vic the most out of that. Vic got a
- 28:54Speaker 2: little pressure, He's gonna blitz. He needs his guys to
- 28:56Speaker 2: be disciplined, not jumping routes. And I think he I
- 29:00Speaker 2: think remember that play against Tampa where we went sure
- 29:03Speaker 2: what he was doing there? And Vic said in the
- 29:05Speaker 2: press conference he's got to learn to play his either
- 29:07Speaker 2: deep half or play his coverage right right if he's
- 29:11Speaker 2: jumping and getting caught, that was good pressure.
- 29:13Speaker 1: There was a free rusher there.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Yeah, Well Campbell hesitated on his rush and he was
- 29:18Speaker 5: clean to Dart, but he hesitated and then Hunt beat
- 29:21Speaker 5: the right tackle off the edge. But the timing of
- 29:23Speaker 5: Dart's throw beat the pressure.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Yeah, they made it too easy for Dart and THEO
- 29:27Speaker 2: on that one.
- 29:28Speaker 5: Yep.
- 29:29Speaker 3: What did you like about ty Robinson this game? Greg?
- 29:31Speaker 3: Just curious because I know he.
- 29:33Speaker 5: Took a couple of good snaps where he showed some physicality,
- 29:35Speaker 5: had a really good club move I remember on one play.
- 29:39Speaker 5: But yeah, just a couple of good snaps. I mean
- 29:41Speaker 5: he ended up playing a meaningful number of snaps because
- 29:44Speaker 5: Carter did not play.
- 29:45Speaker 2: Yep, all right, Greg, you mentioned this, and I thought
- 29:48Speaker 2: this was such an Uneagles like thing to happen. The
- 29:51Speaker 2: Giants get the ball back with what was it, six
- 29:54Speaker 2: forty six point fifty and they never give it back
- 29:58Speaker 2: to the Eagles. They convert a pretty big third down
- 30:01Speaker 2: here to Scataboo on a pass, and I think mccouba
- 30:04Speaker 2: once again is on your radar for maybe not doing
- 30:07Speaker 2: the right thing.
- 30:10Speaker 5: This was the the pass play.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Yeah, third and five?
- 30:14Speaker 5: Oh actually yeah, yeah, yeah, this is the reception. I
- 30:18Speaker 5: think that you could argue this was that mccouba was
- 30:21Speaker 5: a little slow here too. Yeah.
- 30:24Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, this this third and that's a big
- 30:26Speaker 2: play in the game, and he had all the space
- 30:29Speaker 2: and time in the world.
- 30:30Speaker 5: Well, this is you know what happened here. His eyes
- 30:32Speaker 5: were inside, they'd been running the ball, and his eyes
- 30:34Speaker 5: got caught up in the backfield and this time Scatterbo
- 30:38Speaker 5: released and you know it became pitch and catch. Yeah,
- 30:45Speaker 5: but it was just too easy.
- 30:46Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:47Speaker 2: I can't say I thought Jackson Dart was making h
- 30:49Speaker 2: you know, great throws left and right, but no, it Yeah,
- 30:53Speaker 2: combination of finding some one on ones and then taking
- 30:56Speaker 2: advantage of.
- 30:57Speaker 5: This is the game where the Eagles defensive coaches and
- 30:59Speaker 5: players are kicking themselves because you know, they just had
- 31:02Speaker 5: too many mental mistakes, too many assignment mistakes. It was
- 31:06Speaker 5: just one of those games. It was a bad game.

- 33:32Speaker 2: made for Philly fans twenty one.
- 33:34Speaker 1: And up at all.
- 33:36Speaker 2: Let's close it on this because Adam and I talked
- 33:38Speaker 2: about this in the postgame show. A little surprised by
- 33:42Speaker 2: how the Eagles were manhandled up front at the line
- 33:44Speaker 2: at the point of attack. It just it just did
- 33:47Speaker 2: not look like an Eagles type of physical performance. Are
- 33:51Speaker 2: you felt that on tape that they were just getting
- 33:53Speaker 2: you know, blown off the ball at times and just.
- 33:55Speaker 5: Of course on the final drive it really showed.
- 33:57Speaker 1: Up right absolutely.
- 34:00Speaker 5: I mean I remember watching the tape because as I said,
- 34:02Speaker 5: I was sleeping by that point in the game and
- 34:04Speaker 5: seeing that because I watched the Eagles offense first when
- 34:07Speaker 5: I watched the tape, and I see that their last
- 34:09Speaker 5: play comes with like six fifty five to go, and
- 34:13Speaker 5: I'm just going what they're done. They didn't get the
- 34:15Speaker 5: ball again, you know. And then of course, you know,
- 34:18Speaker 5: I watched the Giants offense and you know, I was
- 34:20Speaker 5: kind of that that really surprised me, you know, because
- 34:23Speaker 5: you don't think about that with the Eagles at all.
- 34:26Speaker 5: And there wasn't there was nothing gimmicky about it. They
- 34:28Speaker 5: lined up with three tight ends Bellinger as the I
- 34:31Speaker 5: formation fallback and they said here we come stop us.
- 34:35Speaker 5: Absolutely didn't.
- 34:37Speaker 2: And look, we know on Sunday the Vikings they like
- 34:40Speaker 2: to play in the trenches. They like to run the
- 34:41Speaker 2: ball if they can. We'll see about the health of
- 34:44Speaker 2: what they do at quarterback and running back, but when
- 34:46Speaker 2: they are at full strength or even close to it,
- 34:48Speaker 2: they like to run the ball as much as anyone.
- 34:50Speaker 5: So he sans at him of the quarter you know, Uh,
- 34:53Speaker 5: it will hurts excuse me.
- 34:55Speaker 3: Wentz has his shoulder, isshuite, but they think he'll be
- 34:57Speaker 3: able to play. McCarthy.
- 35:00Speaker 4: I listened to uh O'Connell's press conference on Monday.
- 35:04Speaker 3: They worked him out last week. They want to They're
- 35:08Speaker 3: gonna give him more work this week.
- 35:09Speaker 4: Didn't sound like it's definite that he's playing, and then
- 35:13Speaker 4: play Cashman should play this week.
- 35:14Speaker 3: He was one of their starting inside backers. Is a
- 35:16Speaker 3: good player.
- 35:17Speaker 1: What's their running back situation like with Jones?
- 35:19Speaker 4: Uh, well, Jones, he's right, yeah, and then Mason. Look,
- 35:24Speaker 4: other than that one fumble, he's done what they've asked
- 35:26Speaker 4: him to do.
- 35:26Speaker 3: They they got that kid. What's this? Xavier can't think
- 35:30Speaker 3: the kid's last name? Who was an undretched fre agent
- 35:32Speaker 3: last year.
- 35:32Speaker 5: I know who you're talking about, Scott.
- 35:35Speaker 3: Yeah, all like this. This kid could catch the football,
- 35:38Speaker 3: has got good size.
- 35:39Speaker 5: He's a good he's a good receiver too.
- 35:41Speaker 3: Yeah. I know he's caught the ball really well.
- 35:43Speaker 5: So that we're talking more about this later in the week.
- 35:45Speaker 5: But Wentz has played well in three games.
- 35:47Speaker 4: Well, the last game against against Cleveland, I was like, okay,
- 35:50Speaker 4: no turnovers. Even one of the receivers said man Wentz
- 35:54Speaker 4: was dealing it like he's feeling.
- 35:56Speaker 5: He didn't get back very much. That's the other thing.
- 35:57Speaker 5: He was getting rid of the football. Well.
- 35:59Speaker 4: The thing though, that you know, because I think Greg
- 36:02Speaker 4: the game before against Pittsburgh, the mechanics weren't like mechanics.
- 36:06Speaker 5: Are never going to be great on every plan. I mean,
- 36:08Speaker 5: he's not that guy.
- 36:09Speaker 4: I understand, no, But what you're worry about when he
- 36:11Speaker 4: when he's got the the the overstride, that ball sales
- 36:16Speaker 4: on him.
- 36:16Speaker 3: That's what you're always worried about. But more on that
- 36:18Speaker 3: when we do our pre game show.
- 36:21Speaker 2: All right, So that's a look at the Eagles defense
- 36:23Speaker 2: against the Giants, and on the next episode we'll get
- 36:25Speaker 2: to the offense for Greg Cosell and Adam Kaplan.
- 36:28Speaker 1: I'm Jeff Mosher.
- 36:29Speaker 2: You've been watching Inside the Tape with Greg Cosell on
- 36:33Speaker 2: Inside the Birds
