Latest / The Epstein Chronicles / The Epstein Fallout Hits Dartmouth: Students Demand Leon Black’s Name Be Removed
Transcript
- 0:05Speaker 1: What's up, everyone, and welcome to another episode of the
- 0:08Epstein Chronicles. Over the years, Leon Black has donated a
- 0:12lot of money to Dartmouth's college and even has his
- 0:16name on a building. And while that was all fine
- 0:19and well previously, now with renewed interest in Jeffrey Epstein
- 0:23and Jeffrey Epstein's associates, it's becoming a problem and groups
- 0:29on campus and alumni they're calling for Leon Black's name
- 0:34to be taken off of this building. And I don't
- 0:38think that they're wrong. Why would you want to be
- 0:41associated with somebody like Leon Black at the very least,
- 0:47he enabled Jeffrey Epstein at the very least, and lord
- 0:51knows what else. But if I was some university, the
- 0:55last thing I'd want is Leon Black's name on a building.
- 0:59And the same goes for let Wexner down in Ohio State,
- 1:02where administrators and big shots on campus are fighting toothanel
- 1:06to protect Les Wexner. So is the same thing going
- 1:10to happen up here in Dartmouth. Why don't we jump
- 1:12into this article and see what's up. This article was
- 1:15published by the Valley News and the headline Dartmouth Group
- 1:18Renews calls to rename art center bankrolled by Epstein associate.
- 1:23The author of this article is Alex Hanson. A broad
- 1:27cross section of the Dartmouth College community has renewed calls
- 1:30to remove the name a financier, Leon Black, an alumnist
- 1:34and former trustee, from the college Visual Arts Center. In response,
- 1:39the College Board of Trustees has announced that it will
- 1:42appoint a committee to study naming across campus at its
- 1:46next meeting in June. For critics of Black, who paid
- 1:50one hundred and seventy million dollars to Jeffrey Epstein after
- 1:54Epstein's two thousand and eight guilty plea to soliciting prostitution,
- 1:58wholl hold on soliciting prostitut that doesn't tell the whole story.
- 2:03An underage girl, he molested her, and then they protected
- 2:07him by saying that he solicited a quote unquote prostitute.
- 2:10It's much more sanitized, right. You hear that, You're like, oh,
- 2:14Jeffrey Epstein, prostitute. What's the big deal? Well, the big
- 2:17deal is that it wasn't a prostitute. It was a child.
- 2:22I'm glad that they're being thoughtful, but they've really had
- 2:25a lot of time to think on this. Issue. Diana Whitney,
- 2:28a nineteen ninety five Dartmouth graduate and co founder of
- 2:31Dartmouth Community Against Gender Harassment and Sexual Violence, at in
- 2:35a phone interview. I think any more delay on this
- 2:39is unconscionable. She added, well, I agree, but when you
- 2:42have that kind of money and you're that big of
- 2:45a donor, you're gonna get special treatment. You're gonna get
- 2:49extra time. And that's what we're seeing with Leon Black.
- 2:53They're not just going to rush to take his dam
- 2:55off the building. What they're going to try and do
- 2:57is find a loophole or a technicality that helps them
- 3:01avoid doing that. I support the alumni and the students
- 3:04calling for his name to be removed from the Visual
- 3:06Arts Building, former US Representative Annie McLain Custer said in
- 3:10a phone interview. Custer, a nineteen seventy eight Dartmouth graduate,
- 3:16revealed in twenty sixteen that she was sexually assaulted as
- 3:19a student. I think it's an important moment for Dartmouth.
- 3:23There is a long and sordid history of sexual assault
- 3:26on campus. Dartmouth should take a stand, and I call
- 3:29upon the president and the trustees to step up and
- 3:32do the right thing. I have my doubts that'll happen.
- 3:35I mean, whenever you're dealing with this kind of dough
- 3:37and this kind of power, it's pretty difficult to knock
- 3:41them from their perch. Oh, there's going to be a
- 3:42lot of people that talk a big game, but when
- 3:45it comes to actually putting that into effect and you know,
- 3:48holding people accountable, it becomes a whole different story. Citing
- 3:52revelations from the Epstein files, Women of Dartmouth, the college's
- 3:56largest alumni affinity association with more than thirty thousand members,
- 4:00wrote to President seeing Belock and the trustees on April
- 4:05seventh to say that the group will firmly support the
- 4:08college in renaming the Black Family Visual Art Center by
- 4:11removing both the Black Family and Leon Black seventy three names.
- 4:16The time has come for action now, given the indications
- 4:19and evidence of indefensible misconduct. I mean, is she wrong.
- 4:24It's been a long time coming, and let's not act
- 4:26like this is all new. Leon Black has his own allegations,
- 4:31not like it's just that he was friends with Epstein. Right.
- 4:34This man, if you want to call him, that has
- 4:36also been accused of vile abuse. Dartmouth's student government Association
- 4:43and the Student and Presidential Committee on Sexual Assault call
- 4:46for the college to remove Black's name from the Visual
- 4:49Art Center in a message to undergraduates on April eighth.
- 4:54The trustees met from April tenth to the twelfth, and
- 4:57to summary released by the college's newsroom included two paragraphs
- 5:01about the plan to study naming. And every time I
- 5:04hear about one of these studies or we're going to
- 5:06form a commission, what I really hear is we're trying
- 5:09to kick the can down the road. Oh, we'll wait
- 5:13it out. Yeah, we're still investigating. And then when the
- 5:17next person comes up and they're in charge, the next
- 5:19president or whatever, they'll be the one to deal with it.
- 5:23And that's how these universities and anybody connected to Ebstein
- 5:28has approached it. It's always about kicking the can down
- 5:31the road, blaming somebody else, not looking in the mirror,
- 5:36and the same goes for Dartmouth. They should just do
- 5:39the right thing and get rid of this dude's name.
- 5:42Naming is a topic the board has wanted to address
- 5:45thoughtfully for some time. Chairman Greg Lamaca, a ninety one
- 5:49Dartmouth graduate, said in the Dartmouth News story establishing this
- 5:53committee gives us a clearer structure to do that work,
- 5:56to engage the community way different perspectives and arrive at
- 5:59a process that reflects Dartmouth's values. Well, I don't think
- 6:03that having Leon Black's name on a building on campus
- 6:06is upholding the soul called values of Dartmouth. I would
- 6:10think that they'd want that name off the building asap.
- 6:14Since then, the editorial board of the Dartmouth the Campus
- 6:17newspaper has called for the removal of Black's name. We
- 6:21take seriously the allegations that have been made against Leon Black,
- 6:25and we continue to evaluate any new information that comes
- 6:28to light with the seriousness it deserves. Dartmouth spokesperson Jana
- 6:34Barnello said in a written statement, Dartmuth currently has no
- 6:38financial relationship with him. Well, great, then get rid of
- 6:41the name on the building. What's the big deal? What
- 6:46are you waiting for? If he has no relationship with
- 6:48you guys now and he's not donating any more money,
- 6:52it should be an easy decision right now. Of course,
- 6:55I'm sure that there's some thought going into it that
- 6:58they might have to refund the money or some and
- 7:00that's very possible. But why not find other donors to
- 7:04step up to incur that cost and listen. Sometimes doing
- 7:08the right thing comes with a cost, and in this
- 7:11case for Dartmouth, that could be a financial burden. But
- 7:14would they rather be burdened by being associated with Jeffrey
- 7:17Epstein's bff Leon Black Calls to remove Black's name from
- 7:22the Visual Art Center day back to twenty twenty and
- 7:24twenty twenty one, when links between Black and Epstein began
- 7:28to draw a greater scrutiny. Black, a nineteen seventy three
- 7:31Dartmouth graduate who later served as a trustee, co founded
- 7:35Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm, in nineteen ninety.
- 7:39His net worth is estimated between thirteen billion and seventeen billion,
- 7:44according to Forbes and Bloomberg. The Black family donated forty
- 7:49eight million toward the construction of the Visual Arts Center,
- 7:52which opened in twenty twelve as a Lebanon Street entrance
- 7:56to the campus in the face of the college's arts district,
- 8:00which now includes multimillion dollar renovations and expansions of the
- 8:04Hood Museum and the Hopkins Center for the Arts. Black
- 8:09also commissioned and donated Dartmouth panels, a set of five
- 8:12vertical panels by celebrated artist Ellsworth Kelly that hang on
- 8:17the back wall of the Hopkins Center opposite the Visual
- 8:20Arts Building. Who cares great? Good for him? And if
- 8:24he was a decent dude, who wasn't a scumbag? Awesome,
- 8:28But all the philanthropy in the world doesn't change who
- 8:31you are, and trying to use it as a shield,
- 8:36that's some dirty ass work. The Dartmouth Group points to
- 8:40a growing body of evidence tying Black to Epstein, who
- 8:43served three years of detention from two thousand and eight
- 8:45to twenty eleven after his guilty plea for soliciting a
- 8:49teenager for prostitution. Three years? What try? Thirteen months? You
- 8:55kid me right now? Three years? I wish he had
- 8:57three years. You mean Diddy's doing three years? Right? Dozens
- 9:04of women have come forward to testify that they were
- 9:06trafficked by Epstein and his helpers for sex. Epstein was
- 9:10facing federal charges when he was found dead in his
- 9:13prison cell in New York in August of twenty nineteen.
- 9:17His death was ruled a suicide. Black's one hundred and
- 9:21seventy million dollars in payments to Epstein from twenty twelve
- 9:24to twenty seventeen were for tax and investing advice. Black,
- 9:28as said, though Epstein's advice saved Black over one billion
- 9:32in tax obligations, Documents from the Epstein files indicate the
- 9:36payments were intended to pay Epstein's operations, which included trafficking
- 9:41teenagers for sex. A twenty twenty three settlement agreement between
- 9:46Black and the US Virgin Islands, where Epstein maintained private
- 9:50island compound and attack shelter, says that Jeffrey Epstein used
- 9:54the money Black paid them to partially fund his operation
- 9:57in the Virgin Islands. Well, yeah, he did. Did that
- 10:01money that Black was giving him? What do you think
- 10:03Epstein was doing with it? You can't fly those jets
- 10:07for free, you gotta pay. Everybody. Gotta have money for that,
- 10:11And there was always somebody like Leon Black more than
- 10:13willing to help Epstein out. A March twentieth, twenty twenty
- 10:18six letter from US Senator Ron Wyden two Black points
- 10:22out that Black paid thirty times more for tax advice
- 10:24from Epstein than he did to several firms. Like, at
- 10:29this point, does anyone really believe that Leon Black was
- 10:32just giving Epstein money for tax advice, and if you
- 10:35believe that, I would love for you to explain to me,
- 10:37step by step what brought you to that point. I
- 10:41truly want to know, because I find it very hard
- 10:43to believe that he was paying that kind of money
- 10:46for advice. Black has denied wrongdoing and has said that
- 10:50he was unaware of Epstein's illicted activity. When more information
- 10:53about Epstein came to light, Black said he regretted the connection.
- 10:58In twenty twenty one step down as chairman of Apollo
- 11:01Global Management and his chairman of the board of the
- 11:04Museum of Modern Art, though he retains an ownership stake
- 11:08in Apollo and is still on the MoMA board. Of
- 11:11course he is. It was all performative. You really think
- 11:14that Leon Black suffered real ramifications here An email to
- 11:21Susan Estrich, a lawyer for Black, was not returned by deadline.
- 11:25Estrich told The Dartmouth that an independent investigation concluded that
- 11:29Black had no awareness of Epstein's criminal activity, leading to
- 11:33his arrest in twenty nineteen. No, not at all, had
- 11:36no idea. Just another case of one of the smartest
- 11:39men in the room not being so smart. Black also
- 11:44has been accused of sexual assault allegations that he denies.
- 11:48One lawsuit by a woman who claims Black raptor at
- 11:51Epstein's townhouse when she was sixteen remains pending. Of the
- 11:55three civil lawsuits filed against mister Black, one has been dismissed,
- 12:00the other withdrawn, and the other is currently facing a
- 12:02case terminating motion for sanctions. Estrich told the Dartmouth there
- 12:08is absolutely no truth to any of the allegations against
- 12:11mister Black. I have my doubts about that. No truth whatsoever, none.
- 12:16Huh okay. Epstein was an early and longtime director of
- 12:20the Black Family Foundation, through which blacks donations to Dartmouth passed.
- 12:24His name appears in the foundation tax forms in twenty twelve,
- 12:29though the Black Family is said that was an error
- 12:31and that Epstein's directorship ended in two thousand and seven.
- 12:35Sure it did, Sure it did, mister Black. The Epstein
- 12:40files also contain emails from twenty fourteen in which Epstein
- 12:44refers to blackstonations to Dartmouth. The file also includes a
- 12:48May twenty seventh, twenty fourteen, letter from Robert W. Lasher,
- 12:53Dartmouth's senior vice president for advancement to Black, that details
- 12:57payments for the Visual Arts Center, five hundred thousand for
- 13:00the renovation of the Dartmouth President's House, a campus building,
- 13:04and three million for the Ellsworth Kelly Commission, in amount
- 13:09the college has never revealed publicly. The Dartmouth groups argue
- 13:14that Black's links to Epstein taint the Visual Art Center
- 13:17that bears his family name, and that seeing Black's name
- 13:20causes undue grief to survivors of sexual assault. Well, I mean,
- 13:25if you were somebody that was on campus who was
- 13:27assaulted by somebody and you have to see Leon Black's
- 13:30name all the time, I could see that in their
- 13:33refusal to change the name. Dartmouth's administration saw these hanover
- 13:37and normalizes Epstein's apparatus, all without explanation. Mary Anne Mendenhall,
- 13:42a two thousand and two Dartmouth graduate who is now
- 13:45a public defender, wrote in an April fourteenth op ed
- 13:49in The Dartmouth and twenty four hours a day Dartmouth
- 13:52broadcasts is rought to its future rich guys. The margins
- 13:56for morality have no limits if you get rich enough.
- 14:00Seeing Black's name on the campus building is an injurious, insulting, persistent,
- 14:04and painful reminder to women and men that sexual predators
- 14:08often harm others with impunity. The Women of Dartmouth statement
- 14:12says at two recent Women of Dartmouth Town Halls, Black
- 14:17was one of the top three topics in the post
- 14:20event discussion, alumni were frustrated and indignant that a change
- 14:25had not already occurred. The statement says removing the name
- 14:29is not merely a symbolic gesture. The statement says, it's
- 14:32a necessary step to protect the future and the integrity
- 14:35of the college. And for me, I think that's the
- 14:38real issue. Do you want to be associated with Jeffrey
- 14:42Epstein and those adjacent to him, or would you rather
- 14:45just erase sustain I know what I'd rather do. Regardless
- 14:52of whether Epstein held an official title, files confirmed that
- 14:55within his capacity as director and personal consultant to Black,
- 14:59Epstein advised and planned Black's donations to Dartmouth. The student
- 15:04government and the Committee on Sexual Assault wrote in their
- 15:06message to undergraduates those donations are a financial scar on
- 15:11this institution. The renewed campaign to take Black's name down
- 15:16is assigned both that The ongoing release and investigation of
- 15:19the Epstein files seems likely to continue to reveal further
- 15:23links between Epstein and Leon Black, and that the issue
- 15:27isn't going to fade into the background at Dartmouth, not
- 15:31when it comes to Leon Black. There are many skeletons
- 15:34still to be uncovered, and in my opinion, Dartmouth would
- 15:37be well served to get ahead of this bomb blast.
- 15:42Widen's recent letter to Black runs twenty pages and poses
- 15:45an array of questions about Black's financial dealings, including tax compliance.
- 15:50In the letter, Widen asked for answers by April thirteenth.
- 15:53A call to Widen's office in Washington asking if the
- 15:56deadline had been met was not returned. More of the
- 16:00files remove any lingering doubt as to whether you were
- 16:03connected to women in Epstein's network, and the evidence at
- 16:06Epstein and powerful associates in the US and abroad were
- 16:10surveilling and paying off women on your behalf was highly disturbing.
- 16:14Widen wrote, I mean he had Epstein reaching out to
- 16:17people in the FSB over in Russia to intimidate people
- 16:22like for real, I don't think the issue is going
- 16:26to go away. Stan Cola, a Dartmouth graduate who worked
- 16:29at the college in development and alumni relations for twenty
- 16:32years before retiring in two thousand and five said in
- 16:35a phone interview, we can see how it's going to
- 16:38play out in Congress. There are people on both sides
- 16:41of the aisle who want this to be dealt with
- 16:43in a public way. Cola spent two years working on
- 16:47the crisis hotline for Wise, a Lebanon based organization that
- 16:51advocates for victims of domestic and sexual violence. The Epstein
- 16:55investigation dovetails with efforts to end sexual assaults on the
- 16:59Dark Smith's campus and in society at large. He said,
- 17:04I know how much of this issue matters, Cola said
- 17:07for the women who are asking for support, he added,
- 17:10it seems to me that the college ought to be
- 17:12out in front. That would be a great idea, But
- 17:15it's all about money, not people, even when we're talking
- 17:19about these universities, and I think that much is clear.
- 17:27Custer was silent for forty years about her own experience
- 17:30at Dartmouth, and began to speak out after it became
- 17:33clear that little had changed since she was a student.
- 17:37I realized at the time that my generation's silence made
- 17:40us complicit, she said. She founded Congress by partisan task
- 17:43Force to end sexual violence and has been engaged in
- 17:47efforts at Dartmouth and in New Hampshire. On the issue,
- 17:51I'm disappointed that it's taken this long to address the
- 17:53concerns that have been raised. Custer said we should have
- 17:57a higher standard, and I agree with that should. There's
- 18:01no way in hell that Leon Black's name should be
- 18:04on that building. But that said, I don't think they're
- 18:07going to be successful, and I think that Leon Black's
- 18:10name is going to remain on that building because at
- 18:12the end of the day, you have to remember that
- 18:15these universities are a business, and when it comes to businesses,
- 18:19you already know it's always profits over people. All the
- 18:25information that goes with this episode can be found in
- 18:28the description box.
