Latest / KIIS Breakfast / 😱 Olivia Dean has revealed her pet peeve!
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: This is Kiss Breakfast.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Olivia Deen, one of the biggest female artists in the
- 0:05Speaker 2: world at the moment. Huge hits like Men I Need.
- 0:08Speaker 2: By the way, that song's still love for me and
- 0:10Speaker 2: it came out like a year ago.
- 0:11Speaker 3: Yeah, it's one of those ones that doesn't burn.
- 0:15Speaker 2: So in her songs, her voice is very clear, almost soulful.
- 0:20Speaker 2: So when she was doing this interview, she revealed her
- 0:23Speaker 2: biggest pet peeve in other people's songs is actually when
- 0:25Speaker 2: you can't understand the lyrics that they're singing. Take a listen.
- 0:29Speaker 4: Why write the lyrics if I can't hear what you're saying?
- 0:32Speaker 4: You might as well just make noise. How about we
- 0:34Speaker 4: can hear what I'm saying? It really irritates me when
- 0:36Speaker 4: it's like you can't hear what people are saying.
- 0:38Speaker 3: That's my pet peeve.
- 0:39Speaker 4: I get it's like a style thing maybe for people,
- 0:41Speaker 4: but I'm always like, turn my voice up in the mix.
- 0:45Speaker 4: I want people to hear what I wrote.
- 0:46Speaker 2: I love what I wrote.
- 0:47Speaker 4: And that's the whole point. Also, I'm going to enunciate.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I get that because there's a lot of songs where
- 0:53Speaker 3: I like, I don't know what they're saying.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Well, another person that's really big on that, and she
- 0:57Speaker 2: says it in interviews and songwriting masterclasses and stuff all
- 1:01Speaker 2: the time, is Taylor Swift. She enunciates her words. She
- 1:04Speaker 2: even won't... There's one I can't remember now, and I
- 1:07Speaker 2: wish I did, a famous line in her song where
- 1:09Speaker 2: everyone thinks, why did she use that word when it
- 1:12Speaker 2: clearly should have been another word? And she did it
- 1:14Speaker 2: because both the end of that word and the start
- 1:17Speaker 2: of the next word used the same letter, and she
- 1:19Speaker 2: doesn't like doing that because she feels the words run
- 1:21Speaker 2: into each other, so she changed the word. But there's
- 1:24Speaker 2: one specific example of a singer who I think you
- 1:27Speaker 2: struggle to understand the words they're saying, and that's SZA.
- 1:30Speaker 2: Remember when she had the... the little verse in Doja
- 1:34Speaker 2: Cat's song, Kiss Me More.
- 1:35Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I remember everyone struggling to know what she was saying.
- 1:39Speaker 2: Goosey lemonade or something.
- 1:41Speaker 3: Goosey lemonade. Coffin with you?
- 1:49Speaker 2: I think it was Coffin with you.
- 1:50Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 1:51Speaker 2: But like you find when you're singing along to this,
- 1:53Speaker 2: you just kind of go like, happening when you're freeing.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Another one is there's this
- 1:58Speaker 2: rapper and this is the thing, and I think this
- 2:00Speaker 2: is what Olivia Dean's probably referring to mostly. There's a
- 2:03Speaker 2: whole genre of rap called mumble rap and they do
- 2:06Speaker 2: it on purpose. So there's this one song by Young
- 2:08Speaker 2: Thug called Lifestyle. I've got a bit of it I
- 2:10Speaker 2: think here. What is he saying?
- 2:17Speaker 3: What is he saying? Yeah, no idea. Sean, you're in
- 2:22Speaker 3: your band. What's your band called again?
- 2:23Speaker 1: The Ritz Kids.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I think why we listen to music and we
- 2:27Speaker 2: like music is we want to know what the story
- 2:29Speaker 2: is about.
- 2:30Speaker 3: Lyrics.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Yeah, lyrics.
- 2:31Speaker 3: Do you try and enunciate properly?
- 2:33Speaker 1: I suppose as best as I can. I'm in a
- 2:34Speaker 1: punk band, so it's very quick.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Yeah, but no, I've heard some of yours where, because
- 2:39Speaker 2: sometimes in rock, the music drowns out the lyricists. Whereas yours,
- 2:45Speaker 2: I feel you can very clearly still hear what you're saying.
- 2:47Speaker 4: Oh, there you go.
- 2:48Speaker 3: You reckon? Have we got some?
- 2:50Speaker 2: The ritzy kids. There's a song called Betty I think
- 2:55Speaker 2: we played the other day.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Is it Betty? Sally.
- 2:56Speaker 1: Yeah, close.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Betty, Sally, same, same.
- 2:59Speaker 2: But if you look up the Ritzy Kids.
- 3:00Speaker 3: We might have it. I think we've got it here. Well,
- 3:02Speaker 3: let's see if he can enunciate properly in his music.
- 3:04Speaker 1: You don't have to tell me if you can hear
- 3:06Speaker 1: what I'm saying.
- 3:06Speaker 3: Yeah, well, let's see if it works, if we can
- 3:08Speaker 3: find it.
- 3:09Speaker 2: Yeah, we're playing it through YouTube. If you can put
- 3:11Speaker 2: the volume up on that.
- 3:13Speaker 3: All right, at least you're on YouTube.
- 3:19Speaker 2: That's Sean playing the guitar too.
- 3:21Speaker 3: All right, here we go.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Is the lyrics coming, Sean?
- 3:27Speaker 3: Hear what I've got to say.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Hear what I've got to say.
- 3:33Speaker 3: Something about a child at me.
- 3:37Speaker 2: What?
- 3:37Speaker 3: Something goes away. Oh, we've got to appreciate.
- 3:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:45Speaker 3: You following along there?
- 3:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:47Speaker 3: I'm trying not to look at the screen because the
- 3:48Speaker 3: lyrics are there.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm looking at the screen.
- 3:50Speaker 3: Right, well then you're, yeah.
- 3:51Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:52Speaker 3: Good on you, man. Good on you.
- 3:53Speaker 2: Are you and the Ritzy Kids touring soon? I know
- 3:55Speaker 2: your ads are on Grindr.
- 3:57Speaker 1: How's that going? Yeah, it's going good this Friday in Brizzy,
- 3:59Speaker 1: Saturday in Sydney.
- 4:00Speaker 3: How's Grindr going?
- 4:01Speaker 1: Going great, apparently. Oh, and I bumped into the gay
- 4:05Speaker 1: guy that we work with that's found the ads, and
- 4:07Speaker 1: he said it's just constantly popping up. Wow.
- 4:10Speaker 2: So you must have paid for a premium Grindr membership.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Well, I was talking to him because he does follow
- 4:15Speaker 1: the Ritzy Kids, so I'm guessing that's why he's getting it.
- 4:17Speaker 3: They're serving it to him.
- 4:18Speaker 2: Oh. Ah, yes.
- 4:19Speaker 3: Well, enjoy Brizzy. All the gays in the crowd are
- 4:22Speaker 3: going to love you.
- 4:23Speaker 2: All right. I also want to quickly mention this New
- 4:25Speaker 2: Zealand actress. Her name's Melanie Linsky. You might remember her
- 4:28Speaker 2: from Coyote Ugly. She was in Two and a Half Men,
- 4:31Speaker 2: The Last of Us, but her latest movie is Don't
- 4:33Speaker 2: Say Good Luck alongside Adam Sandler's daughter, Sunny Sandler. She
- 4:36Speaker 2: plays the mother in that who's sick, if you've seen it.
- 4:40Speaker 2: Now she's from New Zealand, which means she's got a
- 4:42Speaker 2: heavy New Zealand accent and she plays an American in
- 4:44Speaker 2: the show. So there's always words and phrases that us
- 4:48Speaker 2: Aussies and the New Zealanders struggle with when they're trying
- 4:50Speaker 2: to do the American accent. So she answered the question,
- 4:53Speaker 2: what was the hardest word to say in an American accent?
- 4:56Speaker 1: Here's what she said. Play. She said nothing.
- 5:05Speaker 3: Got it.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Sorry.
- 5:06Speaker 3: Sorry. Technical issue because we were getting the ritzy kids.
- 5:10Speaker 1: New York. Really?
- 5:11Speaker 2: Yep.
- 5:12Speaker 1: Why?
- 5:13Speaker 2: New York is how I say it. New York. But
- 5:17Speaker 2: you just did it.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But it sounds like an alien is talking.
- 5:21Speaker 3: I don't get it. New York. That's not that hard.
- 5:24Speaker 2: No, you're saying it as an Australian.
- 5:25Speaker 3: Oh, what do I need to do?
- 5:26Speaker 1: New York.
- 5:27Speaker 3: New York.
- 5:28Speaker 2: Oh, you're so bad. I got the producers to pull
- 5:31Speaker 2: up like, There's two things here. We'll both give one
- 5:33Speaker 2: a go.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 5:34Speaker 2: But two sentences to try and read out in an
- 5:36Speaker 2: American accent because I reckon you've got no chance. All right,
- 5:39Speaker 2: you go first. I don't think I'm good either. Oh.
- 5:41Speaker 2: All right. I'm icked already. My girlfriend grabbed a glass
- 5:47Speaker 2: of grapefruit. Why is this a tongue twister? It's already
- 5:50Speaker 2: hard enough.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Go on, go on.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Of grapefruit juice and graciously greeted Greg at the grocery store.
- 5:58Speaker 3: Sounds kind of American. Yeah, give me one. All right,
- 6:00Speaker 3: I'll do the next one. Can you move that up, please?
- 6:02Speaker 3: I can't see through Natalie.
- 6:03Speaker 2: Oh.
- 6:04Speaker 3: You know I'm a pain, but you can't see through me.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Dad says that.
- 6:07Speaker 2: I'm out of the way, but I'm not on mics.
- 6:08Speaker 3: I'll just be over here. The thing is, we'll move
- 6:11Speaker 3: your microphone over.
- 6:12Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You can move mics.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Sorry.
- 6:15Speaker 3: You know the thing with American accents is there's so many, right?
- 6:18Speaker 3: That's right.
- 6:19Speaker 1: They change from west to east. Try a Boston.
- 6:23Speaker 3: My girlfriend ate a yogurt scone beside the alimony.
- 6:28Speaker 1: No, they say aluminum.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Aluminum garage. Garage. Talking to my aunt. That was absurd.
- 6:36Speaker 2: He started as Matthew McConaughey and ended as Foghorn Leghorn.
