- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, Juan Weezar here.
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: I'm super excited.
- 0:03SPEAKER_00: I get the pleasure to interview head coach Oregon State Wrestling, Chris Pendleton.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Some of you might be wondering why am I interviewing a wrestling head coach?
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: And this is because Chris is uh someone that I know.
- 0:15SPEAKER_00: We went to high school together, and we're gonna get into his story of uh living in Lamore, where where I grew up, and we're gonna talk about his wrestling accomplishments, what he's done.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: He's a head coach now, and actually he's also a landlord, and we're gonna get into the properties that he bought.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: And so, Chris, man, it's an honor to have you here.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, thank you for having me.
- 0:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, watched a couple of your YouTube videos.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: Awesome.
- 0:36SPEAKER_03: Um, glad to be here.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Cool, Chris.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: So it's uh just a quick introduction.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: So th three uh two-time national champ, three-time All-American.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Um, as a team, you were on three or four national championship teams.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Four.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Four.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: Um, for those of you who don't know, Chris, Chris Pendleton wrestled for Oklahoma State.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: And um, you know, he's he's one of the greats.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: I mean, Chris Pendleton was a powerhouse wrestler, not only in California, but then he went off and did some amazing things at the college level.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: And Chris, um a couple other things.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: You just made it to the um California Hall of Fame, right?
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: And so congratulations on that.
- 1:21SPEAKER_00: Now 12 to deserve.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: And then also you were one of the um, you're only the second coach that has uh won the Pac-12 coach of the year within the first two years.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: I didn't know that, but I I looked it up and that's what it said, and so congratulations on the success at the coaching level as well.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: Chris, we we come from the town of Lamore, uh very small.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I would say that the pop so the population at the time that we were both living there was 17,000.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: Oh, wow.
- 1:49SPEAKER_00: And I would I would tell you that uh the major I would tell you this that the majority of the people living in Lamore during that time were low income, and that could still probably be the case.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: I always tell people, you know, when I when I share my story, Chris, and I talk about um my background, the family background, and and how wrestling like really changed my direction.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: I kind of want to get into that with with you and and um when did you start wrestling?
- 2:22SPEAKER_03: Um so I think my first practice, my first actual real practice was um fifth or sixth grade, and I did it like a couple times and didn't really like it that much.
- 2:32SPEAKER_03: And then I came back and started up uh eighth grade, really got really into it, uh Liberty Middle School.
- 2:39SPEAKER_03: Um, you know, it was kind of one of those deals I I I always liked to play a lot of different sports.
- 2:44SPEAKER_03: Um it was a little bit before sports specialization really started taking off, where you know, you you see all these kids that just play one sport, one sport, one sport.
- 2:52SPEAKER_03: My parents were awesome.
- 2:54SPEAKER_03: They really let me kind of just kind of find my own way.
- 2:57SPEAKER_03: And I was really small at the time, my uh eighth grade year.
- 3:01SPEAKER_03: I wrestled 76 pounds.
- 3:03SPEAKER_03: So my dad kind of pulled me to the side and said, hey, uh, you know, football, basketball might not be the way to go.
- 3:09SPEAKER_03: You're not gonna really make a career out of that.
- 3:11SPEAKER_03: And so then I really kind of jumped into wrestling and fell in love with the the just fell in love with the sport.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: Chris, let's talk about um uh coach Kent Olson.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: And so that's so that's a coach that both of you and I both of us had even before we were in high school, you know.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: So he was the head of the club, you know, the um the the wrestling club there, you know, like the farm boys.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: And what was it like um being around and and Coach Olson for that long?
- 3:44SPEAKER_03: Well, I always tell people like he was my second mentor, you know, our parents are always our first mentor, and he was my second mentor that really kind of got me going and really set the bar pretty high on expectations of excellence.
- 3:57SPEAKER_03: I think that Kent, uh Coach Olson really he he knew what he wanted.
- 4:03SPEAKER_03: He knew that he wanted to have a championship program, and he knew that he wanted people to be an invested as he was in the program.
- 4:11SPEAKER_03: And I think for better or for worse, um, you know, me and you have talked about that where, you know, it was he it was his life, it was his passion, it's still his passion.
- 4:20SPEAKER_03: Uh he's still going to this day.
- 4:22SPEAKER_03: Uh he's had two knee replacements, uh, you know, beat the tar, and he's still out there mentoring and investing in young men.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: Um, so just watching him have that passion, um, he's changed so many people's lives with that passion.
- 4:40SPEAKER_03: It really kind of uh inspired me to start coaching, honestly.
- 4:44SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Uh, Chris, so we were going going to high school and we were both on the varsity team, and you know, you were our 103-pounder, our 112-pounder.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: They say that success leaves clues.
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: At that moment, Chris, like, like now that I look back and I see your success, and I'm like, if you would have told me, like when I was so I was a senior, and you know, I think you were uh probably a sophomore at that moment, and you're on the team.
- 5:09SPEAKER_00: If someone would have said Chris is gonna go accomplish, uh, you know, he's gonna become a national champion, division one national champ for uh Oklahoma State, I'd be like, no freaking way.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: You know, but it's but just because like the signs of success weren't there early on.
- 5:23SPEAKER_00: No, no, they weren't.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: And so that's what I'm saying.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, just because you know, you saw Coach Olsen invested so much into us, and he he really he he uh made us, I think, uh outperform a lot of expectations.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: So, like, and you know, across the board with everyone that he's helped, and anyone who's part of the program, you knew that Coach Olsen was very tough, um, and he he was gonna push you.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And so um, you know, when when I go off to college and then and then you you take fourth in state.
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: And back then, like, there's this wasn't really like where it was hard for us to get results in that kind of stuff, right?
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: Like um, and I'm like, no way, Chris, Chris went from you know, because I don't know you didn't make it to state as a sophomore.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: Nope.
- 6:13SPEAKER_02: No.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Nope, didn't finish the uh physics finish the season okay academic and ineligible.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:19SPEAKER_00: What I I I think I think it's important to know what made the difference.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 6:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we won't get into that.
- 6:29SPEAKER_03: Um you're right, the the the indicators of success wasn't there.
- 6:34SPEAKER_03: And talking to about Lamore, uh, 17,000 people, I didn't realize it was that little.
- 6:39SPEAKER_03: I mean, I know we got it came from a small town.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Inspiration comes in a lot of different forms.
- 6:44SPEAKER_03: Um, I actually actively recruit the valley, I actually actively recruit that area because it's a tough place to live.
- 6:51SPEAKER_03: It's it's bred tough people.
- 6:54SPEAKER_03: It is actually staggering to think about a town of 17,000 people, how many great athletes have come out of there, how many successful people have come out of there.
- 7:02SPEAKER_03: A lot of our friends that have moved other places, built families.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: I always kind of just look at that as kind of like the starting point.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: And so, but it's also some some of the negative parts of it where you have low income, you have people that don't really have those high as aspirations because you don't see it daily.
- 7:21SPEAKER_03: Um for me coming in, I I was in a little bit of a unique spot uh when I came into the program where it was on the tipping point of becoming a statewide powerhouse, but also on the tipping point of where when you were there, of just kind of just getting the state was a massive deal.
- 7:43SPEAKER_03: When Pat Seamus won the Valley Championship, I mean it was like a huge celebration.
- 7:48SPEAKER_03: And you and I were talking about it the other day, where as a young kid, I started kind of just getting those inklings, like, okay, maybe I do want to do this.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: And the success begets success for me.
- 8:01SPEAKER_03: It kind of is embarrassing because now I get to talk about it.
- 8:04SPEAKER_03: Um, uh being uh academically ineligible, my sophomore, letting the team down my freshman year by not ending the season, just being a punk.
- 8:12SPEAKER_03: I started looking at where I was surrounding myself with, who I was surrounding myself with, and it all comes back to just choices and mentors and investments and uh other people.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Where Coach Olson, um, it's a little bit of story time, he decided that he, you know, Coach Olson, when you really look back at it, he might not have been the greatest X's and O's coach.
- 8:34SPEAKER_03: There's very few times I can actually tell you that I've actually seen him teach a move.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: But he was a guy that was up at 4 a.m.
- 8:42SPEAKER_03: to get us uh going to run.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: He was a guy up at 11 p.m.
- 8:46SPEAKER_03: calling a check to see if we were doing our homework, and he did a lot of fundraising that gave people like me and you that might not have had the as much resources as other people, opportunities to go be inspired.
- 9:00SPEAKER_03: So he decided to sign us up for a camp at Oklahoma State, which is my alma mater, and he made the decision that even though he kind of kicked me off the team, my sophomore year, freshman year would get a little murky on the details.
- 9:13SPEAKER_03: He I remember he signed the team up for camp.
- 9:17SPEAKER_03: I had heard everybody talking about camp, and I'm sitting there on my couch, just directionless in life, and there was a knock at the door, it was Coach Olsen, and I could see out the window that he had his big old white RV and he had all of you guys loaded up, and he just walked in, said, Get off your butt, you're going to camp.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: Walked me right in my room, helped me pack my bag, and we got in with about 30 guys, and we drove uh 35 hours to Stillwater, Oklahoma.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: Uh being a 112-pound uh freshman with uh you know uh of 30 guys, it was a fun trip for me.
- 9:53SPEAKER_03: I think I spent probably half the trip duct taped and you know getting a little bit a little picked on, but it toughened me up a little bit.
- 10:01SPEAKER_03: But then I got to go, and when you go into Gallagher Iber Arena, which is where Oklahoma State's at, you see history.
- 10:07SPEAKER_03: You see that Oklahoma State is it are the Yankees, right?
- 10:11SPEAKER_03: Um, 34 NCA titles.
- 10:13SPEAKER_03: You have pictures of people that won NCA titles in 1915, people that had to go pause their college career and go fight in a war, World War I, World War II, and come back and win NCAs.
- 10:25SPEAKER_03: You see the trophies, you see that, and it just made this huge impact on me that made me start saying, There's more, there's more out there.
- 10:33SPEAKER_03: I can do this.
- 10:35SPEAKER_03: And I was lucky enough that I got to meet uh John Smith, uh, six-time world Olympic champion, generally regarded as one of the greatest wrestlers of all time, one of the greatest, greatest athletes.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: He uh won his first world title at 19 and retired at 25.
- 10:49SPEAKER_03: That's not even when you are even getting to your peak of your athletic career.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: And he gave me advice to the whole camp, and I do this with all my camps now.
- 10:59SPEAKER_03: I give the same advice that he gave me about investing in yourself and the power of investing in yourself.
- 11:05SPEAKER_03: He challenged us all to do one hour a day, one hour a day away from your family, away from your coaches, away from everybody, just you.
- 11:13SPEAKER_03: And this is just that hour away is uh extra work, extra work, your investment.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: And when you're young, you don't really realize it.
- 11:22SPEAKER_03: And I don't, I don't, I mean, talk about just something that happened.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've talked to other people that were at that camp and they don't remember the speech, but for me, it was like bam, cursed me.
- 11:32SPEAKER_03: Chris, I was there, and I was older than you, and I don't remember the speech.
- 11:36SPEAKER_03: I don't know why.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: It just really hit me right between the eyes.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: And I started doing that.
- 11:43SPEAKER_03: And remember, this was when I was acting academically ineligible.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: I was running with the wrong crowd, I wasn't being a good uh uh uh son, I wasn't being a good teammate, I was very self-centered, very immature, and I got that little itch.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: I kind of did it where I was doing my hour a day, but it was really a half an hour a day.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Was it every day?
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: It might have been okay.
- 12:04SPEAKER_03: Well, this party's going on, okay.
- 12:06SPEAKER_03: Well, this is happening, but I was still doing it, and it became a little bit good feeling, like you know, you when you go to bed at night, you accomplish something, and then I noticed my grade started uh uh getting better.
- 12:20SPEAKER_03: I noticed my wrestling was getting better, I noticed everything was getting better, and that ended up leading to that fourth place in the state.
- 12:26SPEAKER_03: And I remember when I did that, and everybody kind of taking a step back and saying, Whoa, we didn't expect that.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: That's when it really like sunk in my gut that the power of what I just did halfway led me to these results.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: Then I became religious with my hour a day.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: I did it, I don't think I ever missed so so now you're a senior.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Going to yeah, going into my senior year in your senior year.
- 12:56SPEAKER_03: Because right after right after that, my junior year, fourth place, then it was the light bulb went off our day now.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Hour a day.
- 13:03SPEAKER_03: That entire summertime, I did it.
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: My family, uh, we drove from uh Lamore to my mom's from Jersey.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: We did a road trip to Jersey hour a day.
- 13:11SPEAKER_03: I remember doing stance in motion in the Grand Canyon.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: I remember running sprints in the Indianapolis 500.
- 13:16SPEAKER_03: My family's in there looking at the museum, doing all that.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: My dad was not happy with me with my hour a day because you know, when you're doing a road trip like that with kids, you just want to get there.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: But I would make them pull over and I'd get it in.
- 13:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, I I started getting a little bit psychotic about it, where I just knew I just needed to do it.
- 13:34SPEAKER_03: And going in from my junior to senior year, um, back then recruiting was you didn't really get a get into the recruiting process until the fall of your senior year.
- 13:43SPEAKER_03: There's two recruiting uh periods, fall of your senior year and spring of your senior year.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: We had a teammate, Martio Botello, that was uh one of the highest uh nation's highest ranked uh wrestlers.
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: He was getting recruited by everybody Iowa, Oklahoma States, he was on this trip, that trip.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: I didn't have one offer, I didn't have one recruiting trip, I didn't have one letter, I didn't have anything.
- 14:05SPEAKER_03: And instead of feeling sorry for myself, it just kind of just made that fire start burning a little bit deeper.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: And I was uh getting that hour day where then I started noticing the people that I was hanging out with changed.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: I started hanging out with uh Grant Ryder and Damon Silva and teammates that were like-minded individuals, Craig Serpa, all these guys, and we started kind of like gelling together, and then I started to notice they were kind of doing the extra, they were coming with me at night running, they were hitting the sauna, they were uh meeting me for weights lunchtime instead of just going and hanging out in the quad where we all used to be, like you know, Beverhill 90210, everybody's hanging out out there.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Well, we'd go to my house and we'd like watch VHS tapes, we would just do things that was geared toward getting better as people.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: So then we go to a couple tournaments, and the thing about self-improvement is you never know, uh, especially in athletics, because you know, you don't know until you compete, right?
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: You don't know how good you're getting.
- 15:06SPEAKER_03: You can be the the king of the room, but you don't know until you go outside.
- 15:10SPEAKER_03: And we went to a couple lower tier tournament tournaments, and I was, you know, murdering everybody.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: I just kept pinning people, ending matches early.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: And then we go to a tournament called the Reno Tournament of Champions, and that was always in the back of my mind, like, if I can do something here, I can change my life.
- 15:27SPEAKER_03: And I went in as like, I think the nine or ten seed, and I had the number the second rate guy, third rank guy, and fourth rank guy in the nation in my path to becoming champion, and I ended up pinning all those guys.
- 15:41SPEAKER_03: And by the time I left the mat of the finals to my hotel room, I had probably been approached by maybe 30 college coaches.
- 15:50SPEAKER_03: Rob Cole, he still tells me the story to this day.
- 15:53SPEAKER_03: He was just getting everything up and running at Cornell.
- 15:56SPEAKER_03: I remember him like walking me up the elevator to my room where I was like, hey, I here here, oh hey, weird guy.
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: I actually gotta go in my room now.
- 16:06SPEAKER_03: Thank you for everything.
- 16:08SPEAKER_03: And boom, I was off and running.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: I ended up uh finishing my senior year off, 62 and 0, 57 pins, got a college scholarship to my dream school, Oklahoma State, and I just kept that lesson going throughout all throughout college.
- 16:21SPEAKER_03: I was always investing.
- 16:23SPEAKER_03: And then once I got older and I got to take a step back and become a coach, I realized what that power, that hour was.
- 16:32SPEAKER_03: It really wasn't, you're not getting better.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: I mean, running, lifting.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: But do you know how hard it is for a 17-year-old kid to invest in himself for an hour a day?
- 16:45SPEAKER_03: It changes your mind, it changes your mentality.
- 16:48SPEAKER_03: When you start investing in yourself, it becomes harder to quit, it becomes harder to do the wrong things.
- 16:54SPEAKER_03: I was not playing when I said I was acting academically ineligible.
- 16:58SPEAKER_03: One semester, it's on me on a podcast now, I actually had a 0.0 GPA.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: My senior year, while I was doing all this, uh uh wrestling and training and everything, I had a 4.0.
- 17:11SPEAKER_03: I had to take nine credits at West Hills Community College.
- 17:15SPEAKER_03: I had to take a correspondence course to pay to catch up on all the goof uh me goofing off my freshman sophomore year.
- 17:23SPEAKER_03: I was doing all of that and successful, and ended up being, you know, going to prom with a a pretty girl, and my social life like like really took off in a positive way.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: All these things happened because I started investing myself.
- 17:38SPEAKER_03: And as a coach, I tell athletes when you do those things and you do the right things, it just becomes hard to do the wrong things.
- 17:46SPEAKER_03: It really becomes harder to do the wrong things.
- 17:49SPEAKER_00: Chris, um, let's go back to you getting recruited.
- 17:54SPEAKER_00: And if you wouldn't mind sharing the story, you you told me a while ago that um Iowa State, Oklahoma State, some of these schools were coming after you.
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: And there was a story where you said that Bobby Douglas was at your house in Lamore.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Now, for those listening, at that moment, Coach Bobby Douglas, uh, who's a legend in his own right, came to Lamore expecting Chris to sign uh and and to commit to Iowa State.
- 18:18SPEAKER_03: And Chris, why don't you tell us um so so call so college recruiting is it's an interesting thing.
- 18:24SPEAKER_03: I have to go through it right now.
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: It's it's interesting.
- 18:26SPEAKER_03: You're you're trying to um talk 17, 18-year-old kids into the course of their life.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: And Bobby, my first trip was to Iowa State.
- 18:34SPEAKER_03: Uh, they had him, uh Bobby Douglas, who is a legend, uh, first African-American coach to win an NCAA title, um, a trailblazer.
- 18:44SPEAKER_03: He just was a legend.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: Uh, they had Kale Sanderson, a guy that was probably one of the maybe the greatest of our sports has ever seen, um, maybe the greatest coach now that we've ever seen, uh, Joe Heskett, all these other things in place.
- 18:58SPEAKER_03: Like realistically, Iowa State was actually the place I should have gone.
- 19:01SPEAKER_03: They were the ones that came in heavy with the biggest offer, great training partner, everything.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: And one of the things that college coaches can do is they can do the hard press on you on a cell, you know, always be closing, right?
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 19:15SPEAKER_03: Where you sit down and you kind of get somebody and you just you just keep chipping away, chipping away, chipping away.
- 19:21SPEAKER_03: And I remember they had like four coaches in there and just me sitting there, and I finally was like, Yeah, I'm I'm I'm coming to Iowa State, and they're like, Yeah, yeah, and I get back to my hotel room.
- 19:31SPEAKER_03: I'm just like, what did I just do?
- 19:33SPEAKER_03: Like, I don't know what I just did.
- 19:35SPEAKER_03: And I told them, I was like, hey, I still gotta go to Oklahoma State, I still gotta go on my recruiting trip.
- 19:40SPEAKER_03: Like, oh yeah, yeah, but remember, you're gonna be a cyclone.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yep, yep, I'm gonna be a cyclone.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: And then I go to Oklahoma State and I just knew.
- 19:46SPEAKER_03: I just knew what it what it in Oklahoma State was my worst recruiting trip.
- 19:50SPEAKER_03: I got the flu on the way to Fresno.
- 19:52SPEAKER_03: Oh, my mom had to pull over on the 41, and I'm throwing up out the car.
- 19:56SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm I it was miserable.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: I just did not enjoy myself at all.
- 20:01SPEAKER_03: And I'm just remember the the last morning you get your scholarship offer, always the last thing that they do on recruiting trips.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: And it was my lowest scholarship offer, and I was devastated.
- 20:12SPEAKER_03: And I think John saw on my face that I was really devastated, and we went to breakfast, and then he just kind of took me away from the table where there was like 20 other people kind of eating and everything, and he just knew I was just I was mad and just dip, you know, distraught over where my dream school was, not where I was gonna end up.
- 20:31SPEAKER_03: And he took me on a golf ride, a golf cart ride.
- 20:34SPEAKER_03: We're driving around, and he was like, you know, don't think about what you're getting right now, think about what you're gonna get long term.
- 20:40SPEAKER_03: He's like, this is a place that's gonna make you a champion.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: So then I kind of go back and uh talk to my parents about it, and my dad was like, Well, you're gonna go after the money.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: My mom was like, You're going to ASU because it's closest.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, she wants to come watch.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that would have been a disaster for me at that point in my life.
- 20:59SPEAKER_03: I was not the most mature guy there.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Uh, but I just kind of told him, I was like, that's this is where I'm I'm gonna go.
- 21:06SPEAKER_03: This is where all those nights of being and doing my hour a day, all those things, like this is what I was visualizing, this is where I want to be.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: So I decided to go to Oklahoma State, and I have to call Bobby Douglas and I have to call Iowa State back.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: And Bobby, and now as a coach, I can tell you there, and you you probably have had these calls too, where you take a call and immediately you just know this is gonna be bad news.
- 21:32SPEAKER_03: Like, hey one, how you doing?
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: It's like, oh no, this is gonna be a bad one.
- 21:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah, uh, so Bobby heard that from my uh that tone.
- 21:40SPEAKER_03: He immediately stops me and is like, I'm coming to see you.
- 21:44SPEAKER_03: I'm like, nah, it's all right, man.
- 21:46SPEAKER_03: I'm click.
- 21:48SPEAKER_03: I was like, uh well, I I told him, I told him going to Oklahoma State, and I told my mom, she's like, Well, you know, is he is he's coming?
- 21:57SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I don't think so, I think so, I don't know.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: So then I called him back and I called him a couple more times.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: This is really before you know cell phones and everything.
- 22:04SPEAKER_03: He didn't answer.
- 22:05SPEAKER_03: And I left voicemails.
- 22:06SPEAKER_03: I know I left voicemails on his answer machine.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: And so then I'm sitting there in Lamore like a week later, and I'm playing basketball at PW, just kind of just you know hanging out with my buddies, just shooting hoops and all that.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: And all of a sudden I get home page for my mom and I run to a payphone and she's like, Bobby Douglas is on his way to our house.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: I was like, oh and so to this day, I still see this man and he still brings it up and he has not forgiven me.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: He's like, I flew from Iowa to Fresno for you and you did not see me.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: I was like, I I left messages.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: So you didn't talk to him?
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: No, you just continued playing with the.
- 22:51SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: You know, uh he he ended up calling because he didn't have my address.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: So he called the house, and I was I right when I got that like uh page from my mom, the old pagers, I went home.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and he called.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: He's like, What's your address?
- 23:02SPEAKER_03: I was like, blah, blah, blah.
- 23:05SPEAKER_03: But I'm still going to Oklahoma State.
- 23:08SPEAKER_03: All right, fine, then hung up and yeah.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Okay, wow, wow, wow.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Well, then that story continues because I want to get into your freshman year and when they pulled your redshirt.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: But oh man.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, because I want you to tell the story.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: Uh I like it.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: I mean, I like hearing it, but you're so you you you finish your senior year out of Lamore, you you're a state champion.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: And for anyone listening, um, other sports are broken up in divisions, division one, two, three, four, five, depending on how big your school is.
- 23:38SPEAKER_00: In the state of California, we're one of the few in the nation where it doesn't matter how small, how big, how much resources, lack of resources, everyone against everyone, one division state.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: So when you're a state champion, you're the state champion.
- 23:52SPEAKER_00: You are the man at that weight class.
- 23:54SPEAKER_00: Um, you dominated, you pretty much pinned your way through, and you now arrive at Oklahoma State.
- 24:06SPEAKER_00: Did you think that you were gonna do well right away?
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: Or did you think that you were gonna dominate in the room, or you kind of knew like, oh, this is gonna be the next level and it's gonna be tough?
- 24:16SPEAKER_00: Like, or did you like feel so good about yourself?
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: You're like, I think I'm I think I'm I'm there already.
- 24:21SPEAKER_03: No, no, no.
- 24:22SPEAKER_03: I did not uh feel like that.
- 24:24SPEAKER_03: When you go into a room and you're surrounded by Olympians and Olympic champions and NCA champions, you kind of learn your place on the totem pole very fast.
- 24:34SPEAKER_03: I was small for my weight, uh, was very skinny.
- 24:37SPEAKER_03: Uh I was wrestling about 149, is what they certified me at.
- 24:41SPEAKER_03: Um, and then when you go in the Oklahoma State weight room, like downstairs, they have a row of about 12 benches.
- 24:47SPEAKER_03: Every bench has a 45-pound plate just on it already, like that's the at the starting point.
- 24:52SPEAKER_03: I was the only one on the team that had to take the 45s off and put like 10 on, and that was my introduction to college.
- 24:59SPEAKER_03: And then you start going in there, and it's it's it's combat.
- 25:05SPEAKER_03: It's a combat sport, it's a dog eat dog world.
- 25:08SPEAKER_03: And you know, I got these teeth knocked out of my mouth right out of my first practice.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: Um, I was like, so that was I I heard that story, Chris.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so um that was your very first practice?
- 25:20SPEAKER_03: First practice live.
- 25:21SPEAKER_03: They kind of ease you in where they show you the drills and techniques, and then about a month into it, they you're going live.
- 25:30SPEAKER_03: And I had Pat Smith, who's the first four-time NCA champion, and I got a guy named Tyrone Lewis, and we're just going a group of three, and boom, just knocked my teeth right out.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: And when I went over the trainer, and I'm like crying because I had never really been hurt at that point, and I just got my teeth knocked out.
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: They grabbed me and they told me they're out, they're not going back in.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Get back out there.
- 25:54SPEAKER_03: So they pulled me back out there, and yeah, you're just getting really uh for freshmen, it's not fun.
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: You're just getting tormented for your first year of college.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Um, every, every, doesn't matter how good you are.
- 26:06SPEAKER_03: The whole there's a whole nother level of physicality, a whole nother level of intensity, a whole nother level of everything.
- 26:13SPEAKER_03: You have to remember you're an 18-year-old kid wrestling 22, 23-year-old men.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: I hadn't I didn't have a whisker on my face.
- 26:23SPEAKER_03: I was not even close to being ready for that.
- 26:26SPEAKER_03: Um, but luckily I had the option of redshirting, which uh probably 90, 98% of athletes do.
- 26:33SPEAKER_03: Very rarely do we see true freshmen, especially back then.
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: The kids are getting better, more educated this uh this day and age, um, are older.
- 26:41SPEAKER_03: Uh, but back then, yeah, you it was almost like standard that you redshirted.
- 26:45SPEAKER_03: So I was spending my entire year redshirting my freshman year.
- 26:48SPEAKER_03: And when you're redshirting, the team's traveling, the focus is on the starters.
- 26:53SPEAKER_03: You're getting better, but you're not the priority.
- 26:56SPEAKER_03: The starters are always the priority, and so I'll never forget it was uh February 7th, um at a house party at like 1:30 in the morning because the team's on the road, they're gone.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: And me and my roommates are like, Yeah, let's go out.
- 27:12SPEAKER_03: And at that point, cell phones, the old Nokia's had just came out, so I had my little Nokia, and I'm uh just sitting downstairs, kind of like you know, just being a college kid, and I see all my caller ID, my phone rings, my caller ID is John Smith, my head coach, and I'm like, Oh no! So I run all the way upstairs and I hide in the closet, and I'm like, hello, acting like I'm asleep.
- 27:34SPEAKER_03: And he's like, I know you're not asleep.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Get up.
- 27:36SPEAKER_03: Uh Ty Wilcox just blew out his knee.
- 27:39SPEAKER_03: Uh, you're coming out of red shirt.
- 27:42SPEAKER_03: And at that point, uh, I think our team was ranked number one in the country, and it was all hands on deck.
- 27:48SPEAKER_03: So I got pulled out of red shirt against a guy.
- 27:51SPEAKER_03: Um, and I really wish I'd looked at the calendar.
- 27:54SPEAKER_03: They pulled me out of red shirt, and it was against the next weekend was against Bobby Douglas in Iowa State.
- 28:00SPEAKER_00: Tell us about who you were scheduled to wrestle.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: I wrestled a guy who was actually my host on my recruiting trip to Iowa State, a guy named Joe Heskett, who was undefeated at the time.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: And Iowa State had a uh a pretty cool tradition that their best wrestlers wore these robes instead of just a normal wrestling warm-ups.
- 28:22SPEAKER_03: And I remember sitting there, and the coaches kind of told me, they're like, hey, it's quote unquote a random draw on what weight you start.
- 28:31SPEAKER_03: They're gonna start with you.
- 28:33SPEAKER_03: They want to start with a hot hand against the defending NCA champion.
- 28:37SPEAKER_03: They're gonna start with you.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: Be ready.
- 28:38SPEAKER_03: And of course, when we go to the random draw, my weight glass gets drawn, and I'm like, kind of like, okay, yeah, all right.
- 28:45SPEAKER_03: So then uh we're at the warm-ups, and I was I remember looking over at Pat Smith, uh, like an assistant coach, and I was like, Hey, why is that guy wearing a warm-up?
- 28:52SPEAKER_03: He's like, I don't worry about it.
- 28:54SPEAKER_03: So I go out, and at that point, I had actually kind of hit that level where I had gotten better.
- 29:01SPEAKER_03: You know, you start off really low, um, um, but a lot of freshmen generally take their big jump around January of their freshman year.
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Everything starts slowing down, your body starts kind of developing, it's not as bad anymore.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: So I had had I I was kind of competitive.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: So I went out and I got I got the first takedown right from the rip.
- 29:23SPEAKER_03: And then he scored about I think 18 unanswered points on me, and I don't have no recollection of it.
- 29:29SPEAKER_03: Uh, it's tough to find a copy of that match anymore because I ripped every cassette tape and DVD that had it.
- 29:36SPEAKER_03: And when I got to like my junior and senior, I went to the library and just started crushing that.
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: I was like, I don't want any anybody to see these matches, and it was just brutal.
- 29:45SPEAKER_03: My first three matches, I had uh I think all guys were in the top five, and that was my welcome to college moment.
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: So they pull you in February.
- 29:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, uh the NCAAs are late April, uh no, I mean middle March.
- 30:00SPEAKER_00: Middle March.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: Yep, yeah.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: But that's not where that's not where uh the story really kind of ended or began.
- 30:08SPEAKER_03: Um not where it really got juicy.
- 30:10SPEAKER_03: So the Big 12 championships, how you qualify for the NCAA championships, were in um were in Stillwater.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: And at that point, one of the things I think that has always stood out for me as a human being is even when from five years old, I don't like losing.
- 30:28SPEAKER_03: I've just never been a person that lose.
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: I will throw temper tantrums, I'll flip the board game over.
- 30:33SPEAKER_03: I mean, I have my three-year-old son now, he's almost four, and he's got that little trait.
- 30:38SPEAKER_03: And my wife always kind of complains about it.
- 30:40SPEAKER_03: I'm like, no, no, no, no, this is a good thing.
- 30:41SPEAKER_03: I don't want to let him be upset with losing.
- 30:44SPEAKER_03: It's good, it's good for him.
- 30:46SPEAKER_03: So I started kind of like when I was taking those losses, I started getting back to that hour day and that investment we talked about, and I was like, I'm I'm out, they pulled my red shirt, I'm gonna win this sucker.
- 30:57SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go.
- 30:58SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna go, I'm gonna, I'm gonna, I'm gonna go surprise some people.
- 31:00SPEAKER_03: So I started leveling up real quick, and so I'm in the semifinals at the Big 12s, and I'm wrestling a guy named Robbie Waller from OU.
- 31:09SPEAKER_03: And Robbie had beat me already pretty handedly, but I knew now I was like, I was ready.
- 31:15SPEAKER_03: I was actually like, I'm gonna go beat this guy, and I'm gonna go get Joe Heskett in the finals, and I'm from Iowa State, and I'm gonna beat him too.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna surprise some people, and I actually had that mindset, and I go into I go to war with uh Robbie Waller, we end up uh end of regulation tied.
- 31:32SPEAKER_03: And when in college wrestling, you they put one minute on the clock and a sudden death, first point that scores wins.
- 31:40SPEAKER_03: So I remember just kind of like I popped up, and the moment I you know stepped to the line, in my mind, I was like, the moment this referee blows the whistle, I'm going, and I shoot right off the gate, get the takedown.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: I mean, crowds going nuts.
- 31:55SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I just knocked off the number three guy in the country, so I'm like jumping up in the air.
- 32:00SPEAKER_03: And I go all the way, like coaches, big hugs, everything.
- 32:03SPEAKER_03: I go all the way to the locker room.
- 32:05SPEAKER_03: I'm showering because my day's done.
- 32:08SPEAKER_03: I'm supposed to compete in the finals the next day.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: They come get me out of the shower and they say, Hey, they're protesting the match.
- 32:16SPEAKER_03: You have to re-wrestle overtime.
- 32:18SPEAKER_03: Instead of putting one minute on the clock, the scorekeeper accidentally put 10 seconds on the clock.
- 32:24SPEAKER_03: So even though I scored like right out of the right off the rip, it's a it's a time malfunction.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: By rule, you have to go back and re-wrestle.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: So we go back and re-wrestle, and I tear my MCL.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: And so I'm in the I'm going from the high to just bummed.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: Because in my mind, as a young kid, I'm like, that's it, my season's done.
- 32:46SPEAKER_03: I'm sitting there, and John comes over and he's like, go get your stuff on.
- 32:50SPEAKER_03: I'm like, what do you mean?
- 32:51SPEAKER_03: He's like, we gotta make weight tomorrow.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: We gotta cut go cut some weight.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: Like, you heard the doctor.
- 32:56SPEAKER_03: They just told me I had a torn MCL.
- 32:58SPEAKER_03: He's like, and I was like, What do you mean, Anne?
- 33:02SPEAKER_03: I have a torn MCL.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: He's like, no, like you're you're wrestling.
- 33:06SPEAKER_03: And I remember just being like, What?
- 33:09SPEAKER_03: So I kind of went, cut the weight, and uh the next morning I had to go out and wrestle, and I'm I had my leg in this huge brace, and I ended up winning the match and qualifying for the NCAs.
- 33:20SPEAKER_03: My teammates were all like fired up like it was a Disney movie or something, but in my mind I was so mad at my coach that how dare you make me wrestle hurt, like I'm hurt.
- 33:33SPEAKER_03: How could you make me wrestle?
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: And I took that pity party with me all the way to the NCAs and went one and two, didn't place.
- 33:43SPEAKER_03: Now, on the hindsight, in wrestling in a lot of athletics, it's not if you get hurt, it's when you get hurt and how bad you get hurt, and especially in college, you only have four tries.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: So if you get hurt, are you gonna sacrifice one of those years just because you're hurt?
- 34:00SPEAKER_03: At that point in my life, I wasn't ready to do that.
- 34:02SPEAKER_03: And the next year I end up taking a red shirt year, and I had that almost a feeling of disgust with myself.
- 34:10SPEAKER_03: Like, how could I let that actually affect me that bad?
- 34:13SPEAKER_03: Like, yeah, it hurt.
- 34:15SPEAKER_03: Could I push through it?
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: A hundred percent.
- 34:17SPEAKER_03: Have I seen people do it?
- 34:18SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 34:20SPEAKER_03: So then I've you know really started focusing, and and it's it's easier when you redshirt after your freshman year because you know what's out there, you know the sharks that are in the water, you know what it's gonna take to actually be one of the top guys in the country.
- 34:35SPEAKER_03: I redshirted that year, and then I jumped from, you know, I think I went into the preseason of my my sophomore year, my third year of college, I ranked like 25th, and um within about a month I was ranked second in the country.
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: Chris, why don't you talk about some of the big names?
- 34:51SPEAKER_03: I mean, you know, when I think of like man, Chris was in a room of want to go back on the injury because then my junior year, when I finally won an NCA title, I don't know if it'll show up on the sound, but still that's my hand.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: Uh, my roommate had a chihuahua, and I'm getting ready to leave for the NCA championships.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: Your junior year.
- 35:14SPEAKER_03: My junior year.
- 35:16SPEAKER_03: The year I won my first NCA title.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: The chihuahua runs outside.
- 35:19SPEAKER_03: I hop on my bike and I'm chasing that chihuahua down just because I didn't want to get my roommate all mad because I accidentally let him out.
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: I wreck my bike and I fracture my hand.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I could hear I could hear the hand snap.
- 35:33SPEAKER_03: And I didn't tell anybody about it.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: I taped it myself.
- 35:38SPEAKER_03: And in my mind, I kept thinking about back of my knee, and I was like, what hurt worse?
- 35:43SPEAKER_03: My knee with a pain of regret, the pain of failure.
- 35:47SPEAKER_03: So this was never even an option.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: You go back and watch the matches on YouTube, the whole NCA tournament.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: I'm doing this weird shake with my hand just to kind of keep the blood flowing and the throbbing.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Wow, interesting.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Um, Chris, why don't you you were in a room what I'm gonna describe these these these men that you were uh teammates with, just a room of killers.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: I mean, when I look at the roster, like um, I didn't know that Johnny Hendricks, Mola Wall, I mean, um Jake Rollshaw, I mean the list goes Daniel Cormier.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: I mean, you were in this massive room that, you know, and we're gonna get into your junior year.
- 36:24SPEAKER_00: Um, and I heard this in another podcast that you were training with Pat Smith, Pat Smith frequently.
- 36:31SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 36:32SPEAKER_00: And that's when you knew that, hey, I I you know, I have the the championship, national championship potential.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: Why don't you talk about some of those big names that that were in the room that you were training with?
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: And I mean, they're your buddies, but they're yeah, no, they're they're uh brutal.
- 36:54SPEAKER_03: Absolutely brutal and like-minded individuals.
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: When we talked about my high school time, and we never kind of finished that story, the guys that I started surrounding myself with, they were pushing me, I was pushing them.
- 37:09SPEAKER_03: Where at that point, if you qualified for state out of the mour, you were a pretty good wrestler.
- 37:15SPEAKER_03: But all of a sudden, this wave came in where we had all these state placers now.
- 37:19SPEAKER_03: I won it, Martial won it, uh uh uh Damon place, uh Surface placed, all these guys placed, and we were all like-minded.
- 37:29SPEAKER_03: And so, fast forward to college, we had like-minded people.
- 37:33SPEAKER_03: I had a guy named Jake Rochalt who won NCAs as a freshman, three-time NCA champion.
- 37:38SPEAKER_03: He was my roommate.
- 37:40SPEAKER_03: There wasn't a day that went by that we weren't competing against each other just from the moment we woke up.
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: If I woke up and Jake wasn't in the house, I was like, What's Jake doing?
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: Is he training?
- 37:50SPEAKER_03: Then I'd go in the room and I'd see him there.
- 37:53SPEAKER_03: There'd be days like he would not see me.
- 37:56SPEAKER_03: He would come up in the wrestling room.
- 37:57SPEAKER_03: I mean, it was always like that, that like-minded drive, that hive kind of mind uh uh um just tenacious, like we all wanted to like outdo each other and push each other to that next level.
- 38:09SPEAKER_03: And it also starts getting into that iron sharpened iron.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: You're competing against the best of the best of the best on a daily basis.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: You have one choice get better or get uh get left behind.
- 38:22SPEAKER_03: And there was a lot of guys that got left behind, but there was also the cream of the crop that rose to the top.
- 38:27SPEAKER_03: And when you start seeing those guys like Jake Roshaw, Johnny Hendrix, Daniel Cormier, and it's no mistake that all those a lot of those guys had very successful MMA careers because it is combat, it's fighting.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: You are fighting in that room back then, there was a lot of fist fights, a lot of fist fights, and then you had guys like Pat Smith, the first four-timer.
- 38:46SPEAKER_03: You had Mark Branch, four-time finalist, two-time NCAA champion, had one of the greatest college stories of all time, winning his freshman year with a 9-12 record, and you know, won the sucker, won it without losing record.
- 38:58SPEAKER_03: You had all these people, and then at the very top of the iceberg was John Smith, the greatest American wrestler of all time.
- 39:04SPEAKER_03: We only knew one thing.
- 39:06SPEAKER_03: We're gonna win.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: That's the expectation, that's the standard.
- 39:11SPEAKER_03: It's a lot, it was a lot of pressure, it was a lot of pressure, but that's just all we knew at that point.
- 39:18SPEAKER_00: Chris, I I watched, so now we're we're in your junior year, um, and I watched the finals match with you and Ben Askren.
- 39:26SPEAKER_00: So you're the number one seed.
- 39:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, well, no, maybe at that moment was no, I still I kept the number one seed.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: You kept the number one seed.
- 39:33SPEAKER_00: So you're you're a junior, uh, Ben Askren, who's who's a big MMA name, and and and he went off and did a lot of great things.
- 39:43SPEAKER_00: He uh he's a freshman, and he had beaten you two weeks before.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 39:47SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: Um you go on to dominate the match.
- 39:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, it was you know, I mean, it should have been a major, I mean, meaning that you had beaten him by by over eight points, and maybe the score was 11 to 4.
- 40:00SPEAKER_00: I I was watch so this is the first time that you're achieving, I mean, what high elite wrestlers who go who are good enough to go to college, this is their dream.
- 40:11SPEAKER_00: Chris, I didn't you win.
- 40:14SPEAKER_00: I did not see you smile.
- 40:15SPEAKER_00: Or like even over celebrate, I was like, man, he did it.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: This is his first time, not his second time.
- 40:21SPEAKER_00: That I didn't I I I want to ask you about that.
- 40:25SPEAKER_03: So to backtrack, um, my last three years of college, I lost one match every year.
- 40:31SPEAKER_03: My sophomore, junior, and senior year.
- 40:33SPEAKER_03: I think I was like 115 and 12, nine of them, nine losses my freshman year.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: Leading up to the Big 12s, I started kind of letting little small things slip.
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: Little small things in my training.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: I was the kind of guy, if a go didn't go right in practice, uh uh if somebody got the better of me or something happened, restart it.
- 40:57SPEAKER_03: We're doing that one again.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: Uh, a little bit of that perfectionist mindset, and I kind of had got to the point where I was like, I'm good, I'm the man, I don't need this, and I got a little fool of myself, and then I got upset in the Big 12 finals, and it was a godsend, it really happened, made me go right back to my hyper focus, right back to my hour of day religiously again, made me just zone back in.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: And going into the NCA tournament, I also like to study, I also like to watch other people, kind of know things what everybody else is doing.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: Um, big believer in seeing successful people and kind of starting to walk keeping an eye on them, what's making them tick.
- 41:36SPEAKER_03: There were, I think, six or seven defending NCA champions at that point going into that tournament.
- 41:43SPEAKER_03: And I think five or six of them lost.
- 41:47SPEAKER_03: So while I was full of myself, the moment I won, I had that moment of just relief was probably the number one thing.
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: Like I honestly just like exhausted.
- 42:01SPEAKER_03: I had been doing that for three years chasing this, exhausted, but then also like I gotta do this again now, or else I'm a fluke.
- 42:11SPEAKER_03: So that's really where I started kind of getting down.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: And I had two teammates uh that were in the finals with me that they had lost, so it just didn't feel like a huge celebration for me.
- 42:24SPEAKER_03: I don't know, I was always a team kind of guy.
- 42:26SPEAKER_03: I got more joy out of watching like my team win and my friends win, and then just knowing like, hey, I gotta go do this again now.
- 42:33SPEAKER_03: That that was where it's like the job's not done, you know.
- 42:36SPEAKER_03: Kobe Bryant's saying it's like it's not done.
- 42:38SPEAKER_03: My cre my career is not over, I gotta go do this.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: I do not want to end my senior year not on top.
- 42:45SPEAKER_00: Chris, what was it like and what were some of your biggest takeaways um being around Coach John Smith?
- 42:52SPEAKER_03: John He's a savant, he he sees sports and sees the world a little a little differently, which is why he's had that success that he's had.
- 43:02SPEAKER_03: I'm a firm believer that almost every successful people, like person, like extremely successful person I've ever been around, kind of walks their own path.
- 43:10SPEAKER_03: They don't follow just a norm.
- 43:12SPEAKER_03: They don't say, okay, well, this is how it's supposed to be.
- 43:14SPEAKER_03: I mean, he won an Olympic world title at 19.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: Like that you weren't supposed to do that.
- 43:20SPEAKER_03: He he did it.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: But he always held everything to a higher standard uh from the get-go.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: From walking into practice, from the end of practice.
- 43:30SPEAKER_03: And in his competition career, he would do what a lot of people would consider crazy.
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: I mean, extremes that I never went to.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Breaking into the the the gym at two, three in the morning and getting a workout in.
- 43:46SPEAKER_03: Going and getting his teammates out of bars.
- 43:49SPEAKER_03: Like literally at one AM, John would go grab a teammate and say, We wanna go wrestle.
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: Teammate would be like, I'm not gonna go wrestle you right now.
- 43:57SPEAKER_03: We know we've been having beers, playing pools.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: Like, well either.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: Gonna wrestle in the wrestling room, or I'm gonna whoop you right now.
- 44:03SPEAKER_03: Things like that.
- 44:05SPEAKER_03: He just had that mentality that was amazing.
- 44:10SPEAKER_03: Uh I think uh one of my favorite stories, and I find out a lot of these stories after the fact because he wasn't the the touchy-feely coach, he was not uh uh a big give you a big hug, you know, let's go have coffee and talk about our feelings kind of coach.
- 44:24SPEAKER_03: He was he was a very, very like intimidating guy.
- 44:28SPEAKER_03: Um small stature.
- 44:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, he's not a very big guy, but I mean, because he was so larger life than me, like as a kid, and even today as a coach, like I I get intimidated when he like yells at me when I'm coaching against him.
- 44:43SPEAKER_03: He he I never really got a lot of insight into like what really made him tick until he got older and I started listening to different stories.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: He won.
- 44:53SPEAKER_03: I remember he was telling this story about how when he won in 1991, he retired in 1992.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: Uh, at that point he was undefeated.
- 45:01SPEAKER_03: He was making money, you know, actually making money, buying a Corvette, buying all that, and he's overseas in Russia and he lost a match and just flipped out.
- 45:12SPEAKER_03: Called back home, told his dad, I don't care what you do with my house, get me uh the apartment that I used to live in, do whatever with the house, get rid of that dang Corvette, and then take my money, put it somewhere where I can't have it, and I want my allowance of again$600 a month.
- 45:30SPEAKER_03: And then he just basically started backpacking through Russia, getting on planes, trains, and automobiles, and just going to random tournaments.
- 45:40SPEAKER_03: The greatest wrestler in the world just doing this, showing up at local tournaments and just getting his edge back again.
- 45:46SPEAKER_03: And I like, and all he has all these little lessons and little things that he would always say to us that once I started hearing them on podcasts and everything, I'm like, Well, that makes a lot of sense.
- 45:55SPEAKER_03: Why don't you tell me that when I was in school and I would actually understood it?
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 45:59SPEAKER_03: But like, you know, he would always like tell us, like, oh no, no, you need six hundred dollars a month to live on.
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, God, my rent's like 450.
- 46:07SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, I don't think I can live on that.
- 46:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:11SPEAKER_00: Um, Chris, so so you go through your senior year and and and you're able to to get that second national championship, and then having knocked off Ben Askren again.
- 46:26SPEAKER_00: So you're like the nemesis that just won't let him be the four-timer.
- 46:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:30SPEAKER_00: Um I'm gonna jump now over to um to coaching.
- 46:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 46:37SPEAKER_00: And I know that that you you were at Oklahoma, Wyoming, uh Arizona State, and then ultimately, uh, several years ago, the the the head coaching job for Oregon State came about.
- 46:51SPEAKER_00: Um why don't you tell us about listen, I mean I I at this point you have this this winning mind mindset.
- 46:58SPEAKER_00: You you're investing yourself, you know how to reach the top of the podium.
- 47:04SPEAKER_00: Um how does that help you now as a as a coach?
- 47:09SPEAKER_03: It the winning winning's how'd I say it without sounding like a jerk.
- 47:16SPEAKER_03: Winning's not hard.
- 47:18SPEAKER_03: Winning's easy.
- 47:19SPEAKER_03: It's not the hardest thing in the world.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: The X's and O's, all that, the connections, that's the hard part.
- 47:24SPEAKER_03: Really if trying to figure out what makes somebody tick, what makes individual athletes feel like they're King Kong, like they can go out and they can overperform, overachieve.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: The development of the student athlete, uh, mentally, physically it's a lot.
- 47:41SPEAKER_03: Um, I think that a lot of times in the in the the trend in college athletics where it's everybody, I it's about pet peeve of mine when people say, ah, it's a business.
- 47:50SPEAKER_03: I'm like, yeah, it's turning into a little bit of a business, but you have to take a step back and remember that college coaches, and this is the lessons from John.
- 47:58SPEAKER_03: I still, I still, I mean, I got to work for the guy a couple years as a coach.
- 48:03SPEAKER_03: In one of the first years I was w uh uh coaching with him, there was a kid that messed up, and I'm like, this kid's a nightmare.
- 48:10SPEAKER_03: We gotta get rid of him.
- 48:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah, boot him, boot him.
- 48:13SPEAKER_03: And John sat me down and was like, We're the last line of defense from the real world for these kids.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: It's like when they leave their parents' house, they weehap them for a bit, and then when we're done, no one else is really gonna care about them in the real world.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: They're gonna have to get a job, they're gonna have to do all those other things.
- 48:31SPEAKER_03: So if we give up on them now, how's that gonna change their trajectory of their life?
- 48:36SPEAKER_03: How would that change the my the trajectory of my life if Olson gave it up on me and just kicked me off the team?
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: As much as he was a tough guy, I mean you wrestled four years, how many guys did you actually ever see him really just kick off?
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Like say don't ever come back.
- 48:50SPEAKER_03: So going back to the coaching philosophy, is I always kind of held that as like a little bit of a sacred mission for me is I have to help people have better lives.
- 49:02SPEAKER_03: I I have to.
- 49:03SPEAKER_03: You usually have about 35 guys on a college team, um, 10 starters, I don't know, five, six go to the NCA championships, one, two all-american become NCA champions.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: Well, what about the other 26, 27 people?
- 49:19SPEAKER_03: How are you impacting their life?
- 49:21SPEAKER_03: So when I got the job, every uh the the greatest job in the world is like the backup quarterback, it's the assistant coach.
- 49:27SPEAKER_03: You can just say, well, this is how I would do it.
- 49:29SPEAKER_03: Uh I'd do it this way, I'd do it that way.
- 49:31SPEAKER_03: Well, you know, you're not the decision maker, the head coach usually makes the decisions.
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: So when I finally got the job, and I I remember I just like I crushed my interview.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: I I really focused on my business plan, on my coaching philosophy, my mission statement, what what I wanted my one, two, and five year plan.
- 49:50SPEAKER_03: I was able to articulate it, present it, and I got the job.
- 49:53SPEAKER_03: And I just remember John called me and was like, You ready?
- 49:58SPEAKER_03: Oh my god, what do you mean?
- 50:00SPEAKER_03: He's like, You're gonna be the next head coach at Oregon State, like it's you.
- 50:04SPEAKER_03: And I was like, I was all excited and everything.
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: First thing you do is you kind of like start working backward on your taxes.
- 50:10SPEAKER_03: Like, wait, what do I make?
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: Oh, that's awesome.
- 50:12SPEAKER_03: I was just joking.
- 50:14SPEAKER_03: Um, but then I'm like, I'm sitting there sleeping at night, and the overarching, like, just pressure automatically just started.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: Like, this is your responsibilities now.
- 50:25SPEAKER_03: You're you're directly responsible for you know, uh with our program, probably around 40, 45.
- 50:32SPEAKER_03: No, actually there are 50, 50 people's lives, their livelihood.
- 50:37SPEAKER_03: And it was a lot.
- 50:38SPEAKER_03: And I remember just getting out of bed and taking my dogs for a walk, and I just said finally in my head, I was like, I'm just gonna treat people with respect.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna make them value what I value.
- 50:51SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna make sure that when they leave over in state, they're not gonna have any regrets about their career.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: And I was able to get to sleep then.
- 50:58SPEAKER_03: So then once I started focusing on, and then when you come in, you have to establish a culture, you have to establish all that.
- 51:04SPEAKER_03: Like I said, the X's and O's was really easy for me.
- 51:07SPEAKER_03: Technique, uh physical training, all that really easy for me.
- 51:12SPEAKER_03: Sitting with a kid and trying to get him to have my mentality, trying to get him to believe what I believe, that's tough.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: Especially when you're coming in brand new and you're just looking at these 19-year-old kids and they're looking at you, and you're you're the boogeyman.
- 51:26SPEAKER_03: Like the coaches that they that they committed to wrestling for got fired, they're gone.
- 51:32SPEAKER_03: They half of their stuck with you.
- 51:35SPEAKER_03: And it was one of those lemonade out of lemons, it was during COVID where we couldn't do any kind of physical training, we could not have any kind of contact, everything was virtual.
- 51:46SPEAKER_03: So, as a wrestling coach, virtual was not the easiest thing.
- 51:49SPEAKER_03: So I got to start working on that, having those connections, having those meetings, sharing books to read, doing all that.
- 51:57SPEAKER_03: And that was like the godsend where we went from 56 in the country to ninth in like a year because we started off on that foot.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: And we've had six all-Americans since I've been here.
- 52:09SPEAKER_03: All six have been academic all-Americans.
- 52:11SPEAKER_03: We've had nine last year.
- 52:13SPEAKER_03: We led the nation with nine academic all-Americans.
- 52:15SPEAKER_03: Our team GPA is about a 3.3, 3.35.
- 52:20SPEAKER_03: And just so everybody that's listening knows, remember, that's that's against like the the the normal college the normal college GPA is probably like a 2.5.
- 52:29SPEAKER_03: Everybody's like, I'm just gonna get my degree and move on.
- 52:32SPEAKER_03: So we're way well out of the court with all the time commitment for wrestling, with the injuries, with cutting weight, with uh traveling, all that.
- 52:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 52:44SPEAKER_00: And Chris, so you know, you're you you're in Southern California this summer, and um tell us about what you're out here doing.
- 52:52SPEAKER_03: Um, recruiting.
- 52:53SPEAKER_03: Uh June 15th is our first date that you can go in and make uh first contact through the telephone, um, zoom calls, things like that.
- 53:01SPEAKER_03: And you kind of just start uh uh let me backtrack.
- 53:05SPEAKER_03: Basically, with with recruiting now, we're on their sophomore year, we start getting ideas of who's the best kids in the nation, what needs we want, projecting where our team lineup's gonna look like here and there.
- 53:16SPEAKER_03: And so we'll have a good idea.
- 53:18SPEAKER_03: June 15th, every coach in the country is basically on the phone for 24 hours.
- 53:23SPEAKER_03: You're calling kids saying, hey, what do you think about Oregon State?
- 53:27SPEAKER_03: Uh finding out their GPAs, finding about where where they kind of look.
- 53:32SPEAKER_03: You're starting to just build that relationship.
- 53:34SPEAKER_03: August 1st is the first time you can be in person.
- 53:37SPEAKER_03: You can sit down and have a meal with them, meet their mom and dad, meet the family, get to have those kind of interactions.
- 53:43SPEAKER_03: And then September 1st is the first time you can actually have them out on campus on official trips.
- 53:48SPEAKER_03: So, right now, what I'm doing with the August 1st date is I'm starting in Southern California with the guys that we've targeted.
- 53:54SPEAKER_03: Uh, we tar we recruit in California pretty heavily just because relationships is always a huge deal.
- 53:59SPEAKER_03: People that you knew growing up, you you'd be shocked how many times people that I knew from high school like those relationships pay off for better or for worse.
- 54:08SPEAKER_03: Luckily, I I was very fortunate.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: I always treated people pretty nice and uh with respect.
- 54:14SPEAKER_03: So you do you kind of get a good reputation.
- 54:17SPEAKER_03: So I'm starting here.
- 54:18SPEAKER_03: Uh, been recruiting in Southern California.
- 54:20SPEAKER_03: I'm uh driving, leaving tonight to go over to the Central Valley, gonna recruit there for uh two days and then drive up to Northern California and recruit there for two days, and then get home to a wife, a three-year-old, and a one-year-old that are not happy with me right now.
- 54:35SPEAKER_00: No, I could imagine, you know, as a business owner, I you know, you know, we we got together the the other night and just hearing what you do, and I'm like, man, Chris, it you know, Chris is working more than your typical entrepreneur who works a lot.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: It's there's sometimes there's some times that you have to say it, but it is like the the I I relate with small business owners.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: I relate.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: You you you it's it's can be daunting tasks, but rewarding.
- 54:58SPEAKER_03: What you put into it is what you get back.
- 55:00SPEAKER_03: And there's this one thing that you can control.
- 55:03SPEAKER_03: We say it, it's a big saying in our room.
- 55:05SPEAKER_03: There's there's actually two things you can control: your attitude and your effort.
- 55:09SPEAKER_03: So if a kid tells me no, I don't want to go there, but I'm I'm gonna have a dinner at 6 p.m.
- 55:14SPEAKER_03: This kid can tell me to kick rocks.
- 55:16SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna smile, I'm gonna shake his hand, and I'm gonna tell him, hey, best of luck.
- 55:20SPEAKER_03: Let's just keep uh keep in contact.
- 55:22SPEAKER_03: Who knows what the future holds?
- 55:24SPEAKER_03: We actually crushed the transfer uh market because of that.
- 55:27SPEAKER_03: Because the guys that who they might and college salesmen, they're the college coaches, they're really good salesmen.
- 55:34SPEAKER_03: There's some guys out there that are way smoother, way more articulate than I am, that they can go and they can sell, flat out sell.
- 55:40SPEAKER_03: They might not be the greatest coaches, they might not be the nicest guys.
- 55:44SPEAKER_03: So when those coaches, those kids go to those coaches and have a bad experience, they're gonna remember the the coaches that were really authentic on the recruiting trip, that they might not have heard liked everything they said, but they but it was true.
- 55:56SPEAKER_03: And uh I I actually enjoy uh uh recruiting transfer kids um because they have that that knowledge, like hey, this isn't like these this guy can be over here smiling and saying all these things, but that's not who he really is.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: Um, but yeah, uh it is a lot about attitude and effort, it is a lot about the grind.
- 56:16SPEAKER_03: We have to in my assistant coaches, I have great assistant coaches.
- 56:20SPEAKER_03: I actually have gotten that mindset now.
- 56:22SPEAKER_03: Um, typically in college wrestling, people worry about accolades.
- 56:27SPEAKER_03: Um, they equate accolades to great coaches.
- 56:30SPEAKER_03: I started looking at people that I was around, and with all those killers that you mentioned, there were guys like Kevin Ward, who just uh he's an army uh West Point head coach, never an all-American, never an all-American, great technician, great everything, never an all-American.
- 56:46SPEAKER_03: Pat Papalisio, and Kevin got uh EIWA coach of the year um this year, Pat Papalisio, NC State, never an all-American, was around all those killers, was right there battling with us, never an all-American.
- 56:59SPEAKER_03: He's now one of the uh probably top five coaches respected in the country, continuously has his team in the top five uh hunting for trophies.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: You have guys like uh Neil Erstman, never an all-American.
- 57:11SPEAKER_03: So when I started uh and Neil just got Pac-12 coach of the year, he started a program three years ago and already has two All-Americans.
- 57:18SPEAKER_03: That's unheard of.
- 57:19SPEAKER_03: Um, so when I'm looking at my coaches, the first thing, my assistants, the first thing I wanted people that invest in kids.
- 57:26SPEAKER_03: They are authentic, they invest in kids over and over, and these guys with their attitude and effort, they make me feel lazy.
- 57:33SPEAKER_03: They honestly make me feel lazy.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: The way they work, I have to actually beg them to take time off.
- 57:40SPEAKER_03: I have to beg them to go on vacation.
- 57:43SPEAKER_03: And those are the kind of people that I'm just from as an athlete now to as a coach, I always try to surround myself with people that are gonna lift me up.
- 57:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, well, it it seems like you you have a pattern now.
- 57:53SPEAKER_00: You know, you you had that pattern where you said, hey, I'm gonna get away from these people in high school and and hang out with these people.
- 57:59SPEAKER_00: And then in college, you went into the room where I mean that's a national champion team, right?
- 58:05SPEAKER_00: And so you you've learned, right?
- 58:08SPEAKER_00: And and now you look back and you're like, okay, I I put myself in a in a situation where we're all getting better together.
- 58:15SPEAKER_00: And that's very interesting.
- 58:17SPEAKER_00: Uh well, I mean, that that that shows me why there's been tons of success um in your life.
- 58:23SPEAKER_00: Chris, I want to talk a little bit about real estate.
- 58:26SPEAKER_00: Because randomly, well, randomly you said uh we were able to connect, and and I'm glad that we were able to.
- 58:32SPEAKER_00: And you said, hey, Juan, I I bought a boarding house.
- 58:35SPEAKER_00: And I said, What the what the hell?
- 58:37SPEAKER_00: I listen, in Southern California, there's not one boarding house here.
- 58:41SPEAKER_00: And why don't you tell me about that?
- 58:43SPEAKER_00: What is because it it's an investment, and then you went on to say, Yeah, hey, Juan, a lot of coaches, a lot of wrestling coaches buy an investment real estate and they put their students in um, you know, it provides housing for their students.
- 58:56SPEAKER_00: So why don't you tell us about this investment, what got you into it, and that kind of stuff?
- 59:00SPEAKER_03: So um, like most wrestling coaches, like most college coaches, um, you get so single-minded into your sport and all that, you don't really think about long term.
- 59:11SPEAKER_03: And basically, my I was 38 years old and had a son on the way where I started kind of saying, Okay, well, now I gotta, you know, it's not about me anymore.
- 59:20SPEAKER_03: It's not about you know, just my wants and my desires.
- 59:23SPEAKER_03: I gotta start thinking about the long-term planning.
- 59:25SPEAKER_03: What are we doing, retirement, all that kind of stuff, college funds, just the the being an adult.
- 59:31SPEAKER_03: I got to be an adult at 38 finally.
- 59:34SPEAKER_03: Um, and my wife had had her her house before we met um in Arizona.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: I had my house, and then we got married, decided to move to Oregon.
- 59:43SPEAKER_03: We were both renting out uh uh I sold mine, she was renting out hers.
- 59:47SPEAKER_03: We got to Oregon, and basically she just had, you know, uh, because it was her her house, and I was like, Yeah, you know, this this is your money.
- 59:56SPEAKER_03: Like you you worked for it your whole life, that's yours, okay?
- 59:59SPEAKER_03: Um, and she just had that kind of just sit in there, and every day on the drive home.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_03: So Corvallis, um, um, it's beautiful, you know, it's a rural area, it's definitely not like Southern California, you know.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_03: It's I don't I can't tell you off the top of my head to the population, it's not more size, it's much bigger, but uh it's uh definitely green and has a lot of trees and a lot of a huge logging community with all those Douglas firs and massive trees.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_03: So that's where the boarding house kind of comes from because loggers would come in and they would rent the you know, rent rooms uh throughout the town.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_03: And every day on the drive home, I kept driving by this two-story nine-bedroom house, and I was like, that house had been on there for a while.
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_03: So then I kind of got in like a little bit of a habit when I travel.
- 1:00:42SPEAKER_03: I love getting on Zillow and realtor.com and just seeing what what's out there, what what people are paying.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_03: I don't know why.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_03: Just I travel a lot, so it's a little bit of a fun, just kind of kill time thing.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_03: And I kept looking at this house and I was like, hey, why is this house not selling?
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_03: I called the realtor and I was like, what can you tell me about this?
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_03: I was like, Oh, we're having trouble, you know, it's a it's a niche kind of house, nine bedrooms.
- 1:01:04SPEAKER_03: What are you gonna do about it?
- 1:01:05SPEAKER_03: And I was kind of like, well, I mean, it's a college, so college kids need places to live.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_03: So I kind of talked to my wife about it.
- 1:01:14SPEAKER_03: We went and uh did a walkthrough, um, saw all the renovations they made.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_03: They uh it has a kitchen upstairs, kitchen downstairs, uh, two uh living areas, and college kids need houses, and especially now, especially with student athletes, because I have to help student athletes get into houses.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_03: Like kids freshmen come and they they need places to live.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_03: My guides need places to live.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_03: With a lot of time, that's what's happening now in uh college communities, is people are becoming very rare uh wary of renting to college kids and renting in general, all the squatter laws, all the things that are happening, people student athletes are a premium.
- 1:01:51SPEAKER_03: People want student athletes because they have guaranteed income coming from their scholarships, and they know, hey, uh sadly, is you know, I've had multiple talks with landlords where they'll call me and like so-and-so didn't pay rent.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_03: Okay, I mean let me call them, like, hey, pay rent.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_03: Come on, you gotta go do that.
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_03: So it was something that my wife and I, we made an offer, we got it, and uh putting uh nine nine uh nine nine students into the house.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_03: Uh, you know, there's challenges like with anything for the renting, but then I started kind of asking a lot of my buddies and and other coaches.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, there's some coaches that are up to 35-40 houses around their communities because coaches are going to be there for about for a long time, especially wrestling coaches.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_03: You're there 20-25 years in that one community.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_00: Chris, so a lot of people may not know this, but your your brother-in-law is a UFC MMA legend.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: Dan Henderson.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_03: H bomb.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_00: One of my favorite fighters.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_00: Tough.
- 1:02:54SPEAKER_00: Tough, tough.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_00: And um man, that's gotta be hard.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_00: Well, you gotta go visit Dan.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_03: Well, we're he's he's actually like an older brother right now.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_03: Um, he gives me a he's one of the few people that can actually just give me a really, really, really hard time, and I just have to sit there and take it.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_03: There's nothing I can do.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_03: And I'll tell you the story about how I met Dan for the first time.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_03: So uh my wife Cell, uh Cel and A Henderson, um, she was a professional golfer, uh, was on that ever seen that show, Big Break.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_03: She was a finalist for that.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_03: Uh she's she's a she's a unit herself.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_03: She's she's in better shape than I am for sure.
- 1:03:33SPEAKER_03: Um, we got engaged and it was it's 2020, so I mean it was such a rush.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_03: Like, we got engaged, I become the head coach.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I know we haven't dated very long, but I want you to come with me.
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_03: She's like, okay, you know, let's roll the dice, let's do it.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_03: So she's helping me move, and we had just got engaged and taking engagement pictures, and she posted them on her Instagram story.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_03: You know, everybody, that's how life works now.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_03: It doesn't really happen if it's not on social media.
- 1:04:03SPEAKER_03: And at that point, like her and her brother, like they they have a good relationship, but it's like like not one of like like every day, like we gotta talk every day, we gotta do everything, we actively involved in each other's lives.
- 1:04:14SPEAKER_03: So he knew that she was dating me, but he didn't know we were engaged, and it just kind of slipped her head with all the other things that we had going on.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_03: So we're driving from Arizona to we're gonna stop in Lamore and stay at my mom's house before we drive back up to Oregon.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_03: So, in between LA, you know, that little loop where we're right outside of LA, Dan's wife, Rachel, calls Cell and she's like, So, um, was on your Instagram uh anything you want to tell us?
- 1:04:46SPEAKER_03: And all of a sudden, Dan gets on the phone and he's on speaker phone.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_03: He's like, I have to find out my baby sister's engaged on social media, and I'm like, Oh, and I can just hear it in his voice, he's not actually happy, like he's pretty upset and hurt, and so they're talking, and I'm like, push mute, push mute.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_03: Like, hey, we're we're like 45 minutes away from Temecula, we can stay here tonight.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, we're not really on a uh a strict timetable, and you can kind of bury the hat.
- 1:05:15SPEAKER_03: I can meet Dan and you know we're we're fine.
- 1:05:18SPEAKER_03: And so we had uh one of those 40-foot-long U-Haul trailer uh trucks with a trailer with my my F-150 on the trailer.
- 1:05:27SPEAKER_03: So Dan lives in Temecula Valley, and he lives on this beautiful, beautiful property with this huge hill off in our driveway, like going downwards.
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_03: So when we're pulling up to this hill, the gate opens up, and I'm like, I can't I can't back the U Haul down this thing.
- 1:05:45SPEAKER_03: I don't know how to do it.
- 1:05:46SPEAKER_03: I don't I'm I might be from Lamora, I might be one of the one state, but I'm not country.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_03: So I have to get out of the U Haul and go ring the doorbell and ask him can you back the trailer down for me?
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_03: Like, don't know how to back a trailer, huh?
- 1:06:01SPEAKER_03: I was like, nope.
- 1:06:03SPEAKER_03: You're talking about, you know, I know who Dan was, he's an M MA legend.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_03: And I'm like, nope, don't know how to do that.
- 1:06:09SPEAKER_03: He's like, hmm.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_03: So I can just give that look of like disappointment on his face.
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_03: So he goes and he backs it down.
- 1:06:15SPEAKER_03: Then we go inside, we're all kind of getting to meet each other and everything.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_03: And he's like, Uh, you want a beer?
- 1:06:21SPEAKER_03: I was like, uh, I don't really drink beer.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't have wine, or do you have any white claw?
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_03: He's like, white claw, huh?
- 1:06:28SPEAKER_03: I was like, uh, yeah.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_03: And I just see like disappointment on his face.
- 1:06:32SPEAKER_03: And then we're sitting there and he has all of like his dead animal carcasses because he's a huge hunter, you know, the heads, like the stuffed heads.
- 1:06:39SPEAKER_03: Like, say, you do you hunt?
- 1:06:41SPEAKER_03: It's like, nope.
- 1:06:42SPEAKER_03: Do you have a gun?
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_03: Nope.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_03: And just continued his disappointment on his face.
- 1:06:48SPEAKER_00: So it was not the best uh start to our relationship.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_00: Right, right.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_00: No, I could only imagine.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_00: Um leading to there's there's a golf tournament that I want you to talk about.
- 1:07:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_03: So um Dan has this thing called as uh pig roast, this is an annual thing.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: He loves doing it, he's been doing it, I think, for well over a decade, where it's just like a big like just party, like, you know, they they roast a pig, everybody just gets to they hire uh musicians, come in, and I think towards the last couple years since he's been retired, he's been a little bit more active in uh philanthropy, and he's passionate about the um about uh uh the armed forces.
- 1:07:28SPEAKER_03: He's he does a lot of the stuff where he'd go overseas and visit the troops, do all that.
- 1:07:33SPEAKER_03: And so this year he decided to, and with my wife working with him, to uh sponsor um a golf outing down in uh uh pachenga, uh down by Temec the Valley.
- 1:07:46SPEAKER_03: Um all proceeds donate are donated to the uh special forces, and it's gonna be a great time.
- 1:07:53SPEAKER_03: I know my wife has absolutely been crushing it, Dan's been crushing it, and they're really passionate about that for both of them.
- 1:08:00SPEAKER_03: It's been fun watching them work together because it's just something that they've that both their passions are kind of uh uh uh joining together.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_03: Um, where it's gonna go to a great cause, it's gonna be a really fun event.
- 1:08:12SPEAKER_03: All the things that I get to hear them talk about, I'm like, dang man, I kind of jumped on my wife the other day and I was like tapping on her shoulder.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_03: I was like, hey, you know, I have my own golf outing, like you can help me with mine too.
- 1:08:22SPEAKER_00: You know, um give us the details.
- 1:08:26SPEAKER_03: Um, it is August 31st.
- 1:08:28SPEAKER_03: Um, I think the best way to find out about it is uh on social media.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: Uh follow Dan Henderson, uh follow uh Team Quest, uh Dan's uh also his brewing house that he opened.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_03: Uh my wife Selen uh Selena Pendleton, all of them on my social media.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_03: There's uh uh QR codes that you can scan, sign up.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_03: Um, I think all the sponsorship opportunities are all gone, but they still, I think they still they're getting close to a sellout, but they still have some uh foresomes available.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_03: And I mean it's gonna be fun.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_03: I I they have they have a uh I don't want to spoil any too many surprises, but I know on one hole they hired a comedian to be a heckler on the hole.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_03: So like little fun things, and then you're gonna see all kinds of famous people, you're gonna get to see MMA legends getting to go.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_03: I'm hoping I can talk to DC because he's super into golf.
- 1:09:17SPEAKER_03: Uh he actually talks to my wife more than he talks to me now.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_03: Uh it's uh hilarious.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_03: He'll call like 7 a.m.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_03: and he's like, hey Chris, I'm like, what's going on?
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_03: He's like, nothing.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_03: Just seeing how you're doing.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_03: You want to talk to Cell, huh?
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_03: He's like, Yeah, I gotta go.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_03: I got a golf question for her.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_03: And so I'll hand the phone over and they'll talk about golf and swing tips and all that.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_03: I think he's gonna come down and then I'm literally gonna just the the way life works is I'm gonna uh I have that golf tournament uh to August 31st.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna leave on a red eye that night.
- 1:09:50SPEAKER_03: Um, me and my three-year-old are gonna go from LAX to Barcelona, Spain.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 1:09:56SPEAKER_03: I have two athletes getting ready to compete at the World Championships in uh Spain.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_03: And yeah, uh one of the things uh with my schedule is I'm pretty adamant that I travel my family as much as possible.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_03: Um financially can you can take a hit, but well, I like having them with me and you know not missing all the fun stuff.
- 1:10:12SPEAKER_00: Absolutely.
- 1:10:13SPEAKER_00: Uh Chris, I can't thank you enough for coming in.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_00: And for someone who who's from Lamore who who got to see you grow up and and and see what you become, and I'm so proud of you.
- 1:10:24SPEAKER_00: And the town of Lamore is certainly proud of you, and and anyone who's who knows you, be like, man, Chris, we we love what he stands for.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_00: And so any of the athletes who listen or any parents like Chris is the real deal.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_03: Like, that's don't forget to tell everybody how we reconnected.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_00: This this past January, Chris Chris was having a huge duel meet.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: Well, let's back backtrack because I think you emailed me.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_03: I think you first emailed me, right?
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_03: Possibly.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_03: Tell me.
- 1:10:49SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 1:10:50SPEAKER_03: Because I I mean I get like a lot of emails, and I'll just kind of like go to my focused ones, and then I had one and I'll just like you know, we are.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_03: I was like, like, one, and it's like, hell yeah, hey, this and then uh, you know, I'm thinking about coming on up.
- 1:11:03SPEAKER_03: I'm like, well, here's my cell phone number, just uh call me, and then you know, you get people that say that kind of stuff, and then you just never know, and I'm always like, well, uh text me like right before, I'll make sure, and then yeah, you text me, I was like, that's so cool.
- 1:11:18SPEAKER_03: Like, of a high school friend that's gonna come up and support my program, support me.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_03: That meant a lot, that meant a lot, and I know you were really like hesitant about taking the time to do that, but also on the flip side, you gotta look at from my perspective where somebody's taking time out of their time away from their business, their personal life, to come support you.
- 1:11:40SPEAKER_03: That meant a lot to me.
- 1:11:41SPEAKER_03: That's why I was like, Yeah, it's easy for me to do that stuff.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_03: Those are the kind of things that as a head coach, you actually really enjoy.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_03: Because very time, a few times you get to like just have like no string attack, just fun.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_03: And I was like, Yeah, want to let you out, you know, see the room, see the facility, all that.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_03: So I was actually blown more blown away by it than anything.
- 1:12:03SPEAKER_00: That that was an amazing trip.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_00: I took my daughter, my brother Marcelo, who also wrestled.
- 1:12:07SPEAKER_00: In fact, thanks to him, I got into wrestling, and in fact, all four brothers of us wrestle and and we still follow it.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_00: And I'm the one thing I geek out on is college wrestling.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_00: I I love college wrestling and watch all the dual meets and watch the tournaments, and so um I think you had posted something, and I was like, dude, I'll like why don't I go?
- 1:12:24SPEAKER_00: It's it's a it's a two-hour flight.
- 1:12:25SPEAKER_00: And so my brother and I go, we we take our youngest kids, and we're in we're in uh a Corvallis, beautiful campus, and I was like, man, Chris has this huge dual meet tonight, and like I didn't want to take away from you.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_00: And you're like, just come on by, I'll give you a quick tour.
- 1:12:41SPEAKER_00: And we loved it.
- 1:12:42SPEAKER_00: And so, you know, of course, it it's awesome to see the room, it's awesome to see like what I call like, you know, I mean, I don't know what you guys call it.
- 1:12:49SPEAKER_00: It looked like an office headquarter type, which was really, really neat.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_00: And you're talking about training, recovery with all the, with all the um, you know, with all the new information that you guys have and and the equipment and a beautiful facility.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_00: And then we have this amazing dual meeting and it's a sold-out event.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_00: Let me talk about that because you said you said, hey, Juan, that that event that you went to out of all sports, so this is volleyball, basketball, like anyone who could actually use a facility, any type of sport, that night for this for the sport of wrestling was the the highest uh attended event uh across all sports.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_03: Nah, I'm not sure about attended, highest revenue generating.
- 1:13:28SPEAKER_03: Okay, got it.
- 1:13:29SPEAKER_00: So because it was a packed house.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, they've had they've had sell-outs before.
- 1:13:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but just everything else that goes to it, the premium seating, the elevated stage.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_03: One of the things that that really has helped level Oregon State up uh uh fast is I I it's really fun because you gotta be a little secure in yourself and you gotta have that little bit of uh crazy mentality where I always want to try new things.
- 1:13:57SPEAKER_03: I tell my coaches we have to be forward thinkers, we have to always be thinking what other people aren't doing, what can we do better?
- 1:14:05SPEAKER_03: Because if we just do status quo, we're just gonna be status quo.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_03: And I remember vividly my first year coaching during COVID, we had cut-out uh cardboard like people in the stands.
- 1:14:20SPEAKER_03: It was incredibly depressing for me to make my coaching debut like that.
- 1:14:24SPEAKER_03: And I just remember sitting there thinking, I was like, I'm gonna I'm gonna put on an event here, I'm gonna put on a show, and then when you're starting to pitch that to you know, your marketing team, to everybody else, it's hard to get people to like make it tangible, make a vision tangible.
- 1:14:41SPEAKER_03: In your mind, it's there, but to everybody else, it's like, yeah, are you gonna be able to do it?
- 1:14:46SPEAKER_03: And I um that first year, our our coaches that we just went to work, I learned more about.
- 1:14:52SPEAKER_03: I actually literally bought a book of marketing for dummies, you know, one-on-one.
- 1:14:56SPEAKER_03: I started learning about just uh scraping, uh scraping Instagram accounts.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_03: I started learning all that stuff.
- 1:15:01SPEAKER_03: How do I get out?
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_03: How do I promote?
- 1:15:03SPEAKER_03: How do I uh attract people?
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_03: How do I gonna put out a good product that people are gonna want to come back for?
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_03: So the first year against Oklahoma State, we did 70 about 7,000.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_03: And then for the Penn State match, I mean, everybody was just blown away when there was like, I mean, not to not to say it in a bad way, but I think our our our our department or the whole department was like, Well, we we were not anticipating this.
- 1:15:26SPEAKER_03: This is like it went into DEF CON 5 real fast in that department where they're like calling in people like, hey, we need more concession, we need this, we need that, they mean that.
- 1:15:34SPEAKER_03: And now the benchmark has been set.
- 1:15:36SPEAKER_03: I can't wait for next season.
- 1:15:38SPEAKER_03: Uh November 2nd, we have Iowa coming to town.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_03: November 17th, we have Oklahoma State coming to town, and we want to put on a good product because wrestling's fun.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_03: People want to once you get them in there and they get to experience it, then they want to come back.
- 1:15:51SPEAKER_03: One of my proudest moments as a coach was just you know just really funny.
- 1:15:55SPEAKER_03: You've probably been there yourself where you wake up on a Sunday morning and you know, you look at your wife and she's like, Go to the store and buy some bacon for breakfast.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_03: You know, I had to get out there and I'm in my sweats and I'm going to the store buying milk, you know, all that stuff just to come home and make breakfast.
- 1:16:09SPEAKER_03: And I had like three people in line at the grocery store just be like, that was the most amazing thing.
- 1:16:14SPEAKER_03: I've never been to a wrestling match.
- 1:16:16SPEAKER_03: When's your next one?
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_03: And you're like, okay, we're on the right path.
- 1:16:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, no, it was great fan base, jam-packed house.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_00: My my daughter, who will kind of watch it, you know, on TV when I have it on, she wants to go back.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_00: So we plan to come be there November 2nd against Iowa.
- 1:16:33SPEAKER_00: And so um, I think this time my brothers are gonna be joining me.
- 1:16:35SPEAKER_00: And so we're excited.
- 1:16:37SPEAKER_00: So for anyone listening, man, check check out Oregon State Wrestling.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_00: No matter where you're at, I mean, Chris, we have listeners uh, you know, all over the world now who listen to the podcast and who watch the YouTube channel.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_00: And so um a lot of what I teach, Chris, is is is um showing people how to build wealth through real estate.
- 1:16:57SPEAKER_00: And the reason why I wanted to have you on today is because uh building wealth, setting goals, uh uh being disciplined, being determined, fighting, not taking no for an answer, being okay with loss, having that winner mindset mentality, you have to have that, like not just in the world of real estate and entrepreneurship and stuff, but I I thought that our listeners would definitely take away a lot of this um mental toughness and this um investment in oneself, you know.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_00: Um and and and as I as as you continue to grow as a coach, you know, we're we're gonna continue supporting you and and just wherever you end up, and you know, we we of course want to see the uh Oregon State be top five in the nation.
- 1:17:41SPEAKER_00: And and and I know that it's um that that you're gonna help get it there.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_00: Uh Chris, I'm gonna give you the final say.
- 1:17:46SPEAKER_00: So whatever you got, anything you want to plug, pitch, um case to reach out.
- 1:17:53SPEAKER_03: I've done a lot of uh self-promoting already.
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_03: So I think I've done it to self-promoting.
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_03: Uh it's been fun.
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_03: I I you know, I think with when you talk about that personal investment is you know, even with real estate for me, because we're always now we're actively, I've picked your brain too on it.
- 1:18:08SPEAKER_03: We're actively always looking for that.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_03: That uh what what what what are we doing to build our wealth?
- 1:18:13SPEAKER_03: What are we doing to provide for our family, for our uh kids' future?
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_03: I think that it kind of goes in that self-investment.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_03: Once you start getting a little bit in that self-investment, watching your podcasts, learning about these things, then it then it's not as scary anymore.
- 1:18:27SPEAKER_03: Now it's like, okay, like my wife and I are like, yeah, let's go look, we've got this one settled.
- 1:18:31SPEAKER_03: What's our next investment property?
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_03: What's our next investment property?
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_03: How do we start working into our LLCs?
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_03: How do we start working?
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_03: All those things.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_03: It's been a really fun, uh, like like that's kind of starting to become one of my my hobbies now is learning about this stuff.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_00: Well, um in just about everything you've done, Chris, you've been a success.
- 1:18:48SPEAKER_00: So you you know, you're probably gonna end up being a uh real estate investor success too, because because you know how to dedicate yourself and then you want to learn the craft and you'll commit that extra time to to get good.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_03: So if I lift some more weights, maybe I can sell some houses and get out there and you know tell somebody, oh, hey, you sign the paper on a match.
- 1:19:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's that probably doesn't work in the real estate world.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_00: It doesn't work that way, but but uh but Chris, man, thank you so much.
- 1:19:13SPEAKER_00: You're the man.
- 1:19:14SPEAKER_00: We look up to you, and thank you for being here.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, thank you for having me.
