- 0:28Speaker 2: today hunter zarbenicki austin rose Dakota Free Tag, our new
- 0:32Speaker 2: Monday setup here. We're going to have all three of
- 0:37Speaker 2: us back on every Monday, recapping every game. What a win, fellas.
- 0:43Speaker 2: Huskers move to 4-0. Big time win on the road
- 0:46Speaker 2: in East Lansing against the Michigan State Spartans. I am
- 0:52Speaker 2: still recovering. More from sleep than anything. But, boy, we
- 0:58Speaker 2: had a 5.30 a.m. flight on Sunday morning after the game,
- 1:04Speaker 2: and let's just say there wasn't much sleep. And here
- 1:09Speaker 2: we are, Monday morning.
- 1:13Speaker 3: How was the East Lansing?
- 1:15Speaker 2: Great. I'll be honest, it was, I mean, again, the
- 1:21Speaker 2: wins and the way the game went helps a ton.
- 1:28Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:30Speaker 2: But the campus and, I mean, the bar scene, the
- 1:35Speaker 2: tailgate scene, the fans, I mean, the college kids were
- 1:39Speaker 2: still college kids. They were what you'd expect from college
- 1:43Speaker 2: kids treating road fans. But we got treated very, very well.
- 1:48Speaker 2: Our seats were on– actually, we didn't know we were
- 1:52Speaker 2: booking these tickets, but we sat in the Michigan State
- 1:55Speaker 2: parent section. Oops. That was interesting. to say the least. Uh,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and yeah, I mean like, like the whole fourth quarter
- 2:05Speaker 2: was pretty much just a Husker party. Uh, and it was,
- 2:10Speaker 2: it was very enjoyable. So, um, the East landing was
- 2:13Speaker 2: a blast. I'd recommend it. It's not like obviously one
- 2:17Speaker 2: of the staples that you want to, you probably have
- 2:19Speaker 2: on your checklist to go knock off for a stadium
- 2:22Speaker 2: or campus, but it was, um, it was definitely one
- 2:27Speaker 2: of the better trips for a lot of reasons.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Oh, Jesus, I forgot what I was about to ask. No,
- 2:37Speaker 4: that's good to hear. I mean, it was a pleasant
- 2:40Speaker 4: night for a football game, for sure. How does this
- 2:42Speaker 4: improve your road record? Are you 2-20, 2-8?
- 2:48Speaker 2: We're over this now. I'm 5-16. I've won three in
- 2:52Speaker 2: a row.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Okay.
- 2:54Speaker 2: We're past it. We've turned a corner. So we're moving
- 3:00Speaker 2: in the right direction here.
- 3:03Speaker 1: Let's kick it off here. Best win since.
- 3:07Speaker 1: What do you guys think that actually is? That's one
- 3:10Speaker 1: of the best Husker wins since... I've been thinking about this.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I can't even remember. Colorado? Yeah, probably Colorado.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Was that two years ago?
- 3:22Speaker 2: Since last week.
- 3:23Speaker 1: Since last week. I don't know about that.
- 3:30Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, you can talk about the road win
- 3:32Speaker 2: and the things that it means. I think the– talk
- 3:36Speaker 2: about it heading into the game. I think it's the highest, like,
- 3:40Speaker 2: whatever that ranking is, FNP ranking road win game that
- 3:45Speaker 2: we've had in, I don't know, I can't remember. I mean,
- 3:50Speaker 2: a long time, several years.
- 3:54Speaker 1: We went and did that.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So, like, it– yeah, I mean, it– especially the way–
- 4:01Speaker 2: Michigan State has kind of played so far in the situation.
- 4:05Speaker 2: It was a scary game. You just didn't really know
- 4:08Speaker 2: a lot of question marks on where our team's at,
- 4:12Speaker 2: where their team's at, and to come out and play
- 4:16Speaker 2: the way that we did and know was it everything
- 4:19Speaker 2: absolutely perfect for all four quarters, all possessions. No. But, like,
- 4:25Speaker 2: we were talking about that a little bit here today.
- 4:28Speaker 2: Winning a game like that, no matter how you do it,
- 4:32Speaker 2: is impressive, especially where we're, I'm saying where we're at
- 4:35Speaker 2: as a program. Right.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:38Speaker 2: And, and then doing it the way that we did and,
- 4:40Speaker 2: and I just, it was very impressive. It was so fun.
- 4:45Speaker 2: And yeah, it made, it made the win be pretty impressive.
- 4:53Speaker 4: Yeah, no, it's always good to get a win. It's
- 4:56Speaker 4: one of those things where you don't want to get,
- 5:00Speaker 4: He started thinking about the game. He was like, well,
- 5:02Speaker 4: you know, this happened and this happened. I was like, no,
- 5:05Speaker 4: you still won on the road. And it wasn't close, particularly.
- 5:09Speaker 4: You know, 31-13, we were right there in the red
- 5:14Speaker 4: zone there at the end of it.
- 5:15Speaker 3: We were on fourth down. That could have been 34-13
- 5:18Speaker 3: or 38-13.
- 5:18Speaker 4: Not sure if that rule had money on the overs
- 5:24Speaker 4: going for it there on fourth down.
- 5:26Speaker 3: But that was my first thought. It's like, We get
- 5:29Speaker 3: a touchdown here. We hit those overs.
- 5:36Speaker 4: Yeah, like you said, it wasn't four quarters of great football,
- 5:41Speaker 4: but it was four quarters of good football from us
- 5:44Speaker 4: and better football than them.
- 5:49Speaker 1: We can nitpick here and there, but I thought that
- 5:51Speaker 1: is one of the best, especially on the road going
- 5:54Speaker 1: on where like, oh, Nebraska didn't play anybody yet. That's
- 5:57Speaker 1: one of the best games than Nebraska football has played
- 6:02Speaker 1: in a long time. Wow. I mean, yes.
- 6:06Speaker 3: Wow. Okay. You agree?
- 6:08Speaker 2: No, seriously. No, I, I, I think here's, here's how
- 6:13Speaker 2: I think about games like this, especially where we're at
- 6:15Speaker 2: this season. You got to take a step back and
- 6:17Speaker 2: look at where, where things have been the past, like six, seven,
- 6:23Speaker 2: eight years, probably longer than that.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Going into a game like this in, and no, it
- 6:30Speaker 2: obviously we, not everything's perfect, but I, I just, I,
- 6:35Speaker 2: you're not going to watch a football game unless it's
- 6:37Speaker 2: like Ohio state playing Doan college that like everything, every play,
- 6:43Speaker 2: every possession goes like really well and perfect. Like, and so, yeah.
- 6:49Speaker 2: And I kind of been backtracking a little bit. Cause
- 6:51Speaker 2: that first half of the Ohio game, I was very
- 6:54Speaker 2: nitpicky on stuff and, Maybe Ohio and Michigan State are
- 6:59Speaker 2: the same opponent. I don't know. The same caliber team.
- 7:02Speaker 2: You feel like Michigan State's on the road is probably
- 7:04Speaker 2: a little tougher. But you go into a game like
- 7:09Speaker 2: this expecting it to just be a slugfest and knock
- 7:12Speaker 2: it out, find a way to win, win by one,
- 7:15Speaker 2: whatever it takes, and then to hear how that game went,
- 7:19Speaker 2: it is. It's pretty impressive and how the ending of
- 7:26Speaker 2: the game it was and then obviously all the things
- 7:29Speaker 2: that happened during it so like yeah I've heard the
- 7:31Speaker 2: word ugly win or like the papers have been writing
- 7:34Speaker 2: about it how it wasn't perfect and like we can
- 7:39Speaker 2: sit here and nitpick a lot of stuff and yeah
- 7:44Speaker 2: I'm not also keep this in mind we are still
- 7:48Speaker 2: fans and like.
- 7:50Speaker 3: We always want more We want more.
- 7:55Speaker 2: You have the right to maybe nitpick and stuff like that,
- 7:57Speaker 2: but also we have the right to celebrate and.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Be really happy. We're going to do both today. We're
- 8:03Speaker 3: going to nitpick and celebrate today.
- 8:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:05Speaker 4: I guess devil advocate position would be, you know, they
- 8:10Speaker 4: lost their starting running back within the first minute of
- 8:14Speaker 4: the game.
- 8:14Speaker 3: After he had one carry for 23 yards.
- 8:18Speaker 4: Then they were also missing one of the starting linebackers
- 8:21Speaker 4: lost their starting corner and then another starting linebacker.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Can I.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Just say right there, they lost the most amount of
- 8:30Speaker 1: players I ever saw taking it on a cart. Like
- 8:33Speaker 1: they lost eight guys on a cart.
- 8:38Speaker 4: If I was a Michigan State fan, I would be
- 8:41Speaker 4: a little upset at the rest of some of the calls.
- 8:43Speaker 4: I think that there were truly 50-50 calls and I
- 8:46Speaker 4: don't think the refs really There wasn't, like, an egregiously
- 8:49Speaker 4: blown call, but that's the ad– that's the devil's ad
- 8:52Speaker 4: kit there is.
- 8:54Speaker 2: Hey, refs like to favor better teams. I don't know.
- 8:59Speaker 1: There was some questionable calls, and thank God they went
- 9:02Speaker 1: Oscar's way this time, which it's usually not gone that way, but.
- 9:05Speaker 4: I think– I don't want to say questionable, but I
- 9:09Speaker 4: do think they were, like, actually, like, 50-50.
- 9:13Speaker 3: Like, if they went the other way, it's like, okay,
- 9:15Speaker 3: you know, that's fair. I wouldn't have been upset.
- 9:20Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 9:20Speaker 2: So it's kind of funny, obviously at the game, you
- 9:23Speaker 2: don't know, you don't see all the angles. And if
- 9:27Speaker 2: you do see angles, you're watching them on a big
- 9:29Speaker 2: screen that like, you really can't tell. And they're not,
- 9:31Speaker 2: they're not showing you what you're seeing on TV.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Right.
- 9:34Speaker 2: And so a lot of the stuff you're not, you're
- 9:36Speaker 2: not like some of the replays I'm talking about specifically,
- 9:39Speaker 2: but then also, you know, penalties and you don't, you
- 9:42Speaker 2: don't get to see a replay of, of what gets
- 9:43Speaker 2: called or anything like that. So what, What's funny is, yeah,
- 9:48Speaker 2: the vibe obviously in the stadium was that.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Ref sucked.
- 9:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 9:52Speaker 2: I mean, the refs you suck chant come came out
- 9:56Speaker 2: a couple different times and like fans around us were
- 10:00Speaker 2: asking us you know how our flight over was with
- 10:03Speaker 2: them and how much money did we slip in the
- 10:05Speaker 2: in their pocket when they you know came from Lincoln
- 10:08Speaker 2: I'm like okay uh like yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 4: The defensive holding call was probably yeah yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 1: That that that one was iffy but it's that one
- 10:17Speaker 1: was probably the worst one it's.
- 10:19Speaker 2: It's nice to know, like, whatever, and Fitzgerald said it
- 10:24Speaker 2: in his postgame, which I listened to his postgame, and
- 10:26Speaker 2: that was another place to be like, man, like, we just,
- 10:32Speaker 2: Michigan State's in a complete rebuild, and, I mean, I'm
- 10:35Speaker 2: not calling them there at the bottom, but, like, he
- 10:38Speaker 2: talked about us and treated us, and the media asked
- 10:41Speaker 2: about us, you know, like, we're better than Michigan State. Like,
- 10:43Speaker 2: we are back at that next tier ahead. He talked
- 10:47Speaker 2: about how, like, they beat themselves over and over and over.
- 10:53Speaker 2: And we, we weren't so sure that was going to
- 10:56Speaker 2: happen just because that's the way his teams are coached.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Now we caught them obviously early in the year, which
- 11:01Speaker 2: was great. But for once we looked like the, it
- 11:06Speaker 2: was very clear. We looked like the cleaner crisper. Like
- 11:09Speaker 2: we had some penalties of our own. Don't get me wrong,
- 11:12Speaker 2: but we, we didn't have those catastrophic penalties. errors, whether
- 11:18Speaker 2: not just penalties, but the turnovers is mainly what I'm
- 11:20Speaker 2: getting to here. That really changed that game completely changed
- 11:25Speaker 2: the field completely, um, stopped a couple, a couple of
- 11:28Speaker 2: their drives. Like that was to me, you pointed out
- 11:32Speaker 2: one big thing that mattered and change that game, which
- 11:36Speaker 2: predicted going in is what it's going to be turnovers
- 11:38Speaker 2: and turnovers were three zero.
- 11:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 11:41Speaker 2: That's it's huge. When you go on the road, You
- 11:44Speaker 2: don't turn the ball over. We've been very good knock
- 11:46Speaker 2: on wood so far this year. In Michigan State, the
- 11:49Speaker 2: turnovers they had, too, I guess you could say the
- 11:53Speaker 2: one throw was really bad, but we also, I think,
- 11:56Speaker 2: baited them into that throw. They were all forced turnovers,
- 12:00Speaker 2: plays made by us, not necessarily them just dropping the
- 12:05Speaker 2: ball on a normal tackle or throwing it randomly because
- 12:09Speaker 2: it was a bad... So, like, that's huge. It's huge
- 12:12Speaker 2: in a game like that. And to me, that was
- 12:14Speaker 2: the big reason why the game got to where it did.
- 12:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 12:23Speaker 4: I probably agree that that was the biggest difference in
- 12:25Speaker 4: the game.
- 12:28Speaker 3: Because outside of that, it was kind.
- 12:32Speaker 2: Of.
- 12:32Speaker 3: They gave us three extra.
- 12:33Speaker 4: Possessions with a better field advantage, and it stopped their momentum.
- 12:39Speaker 4: But There was concern about them controlling the game. When
- 12:44Speaker 4: you have three turnovers and we have zero, that impacts
- 12:49Speaker 4: your ability to control the game. That's what helped us
- 12:51Speaker 4: get the points out.
- 12:54Speaker 3: We got to a position in the game where they
- 12:56Speaker 3: couldn't do what they.
- 12:57Speaker 4: Wanted to do with their starting running back being out.
- 13:03Speaker 4: You kind of felt halfway through the second quarter that
- 13:06Speaker 4: we got this. I wasn't really worried basically halfway through
- 13:10Speaker 4: the second quarter. Cause it's like, okay, they can't do
- 13:11Speaker 4: what they want to do. We like, I know we're
- 13:14Speaker 4: not doing exactly how we want to do it, but
- 13:16Speaker 4: they can't do what they want to do, which felt good.
- 13:19Speaker 1: Everyone talks about injuries too. Husker brains are forgetting. We
- 13:22Speaker 1: also lost Jamal rule, like super early too. Like, like
- 13:26Speaker 1: we were injured too. And, and we found a way
- 13:29Speaker 1: around that. I am just super impressed with actually, which
- 13:36Speaker 1: my role said this every year since he's been here,
- 13:40Speaker 1: We actually got an offensive line. Which I think Landry
- 13:45Speaker 1: moving around a lot helps with that, but I'm super
- 13:48Speaker 1: impressed with our offensive line.
- 13:51Speaker 3: They put up that stat on the screen that our
- 13:56Speaker 3: two deep average height and weight was like 6'5, 3'15.
- 13:59Speaker 4: That's pretty good for 10 guys.
- 14:03Speaker 3: I don't remember what it was.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Maybe 6 guys or 7 guys.
- 14:07Speaker 1: We're moving people on the offensive line like When we're
- 14:10Speaker 1: running the ball, you can tell that, like, there is
- 14:12Speaker 1: a good– there's actually running holes. There's not people in
- 14:17Speaker 1: the backfield right away. I mean, after the game, I
- 14:22Speaker 1: was like, do I need to pinch myself? Like, Nebraska
- 14:24Speaker 1: football might actually be really good.
- 14:27Speaker 2: So, two things you mentioned here. The injury piece, which–
- 14:30Speaker 2: it's funny. One of our other guys that we went
- 14:33Speaker 2: to the game with, he said he kind of got–
- 14:37Speaker 2: yelled at and shushed because he was– throwing his hands
- 14:40Speaker 2: in the air after they had another guy go down.
- 14:43Speaker 2: What are we doing? That's fair. The injury piece. Here's
- 14:48Speaker 2: the thing. Injuries are going to happen in football just
- 14:51Speaker 2: because it's a physical aggressive sport. That's why depth matters.
- 14:56Speaker 2: That's why having players, especially at the important positions, the
- 15:00Speaker 2: really important positions, having guys that can come in and
- 15:04Speaker 2: fill that void without a big drop-off is huge. I
- 15:08Speaker 2: think that one thing that you don't, doesn't get talked
- 15:11Speaker 2: about enough in Nebraska is the depth that we've created.
- 15:14Speaker 2: And that comes with an experienced team that we have
- 15:18Speaker 2: this year. So Austin, you mentioned the two deep line.
- 15:22Speaker 2: You don't notice a drop off when the backup left
- 15:25Speaker 2: guard comes in for a couple of plays or, you know,
- 15:28Speaker 2: a whole half because someone gets hurt as example. So,
- 15:31Speaker 2: so that I think is, is a really big key there.
- 15:38Speaker 2: for our game. And then, Dak, you mentioned the offensive
- 15:40Speaker 2: line getting a push. That was like, to start the game,
- 15:43Speaker 2: I turned around and mentioned something to Arnie. I was like, I,
- 15:50Speaker 2: the way this game started, I'm like, I don't know. Like,
- 15:52Speaker 2: this is kind of like a battle up front. Like,
- 15:54Speaker 2: we're not really getting a whole lot of movement. And they,
- 15:57Speaker 2: you know, their first drive, they had a, you know,
- 15:59Speaker 2: run or two. And I'm like, I don't, there's a
- 16:01Speaker 2: little bit like, yeah. But what happened, and this is
- 16:04Speaker 2: becoming a part of Rule's Matt rules identity and, and
- 16:09Speaker 2: Nebraska football's old identity. And it happened this game. You
- 16:13Speaker 2: just keep sticking with it. You keep wearing them out.
- 16:15Speaker 2: You keep grinding it. You keep doing it. And by
- 16:17Speaker 2: the time we got to the third and fourth quarter,
- 16:20Speaker 2: you saw holes in, in just moving people up front.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Pass protection was pretty damn good. Like it just wore
- 16:29Speaker 2: them out over time. And I don't, again, I don't
- 16:31Speaker 2: know their personnel. That was all injuries. I'm not going
- 16:33Speaker 2: to put it on that, you know, cause I think,
- 16:35Speaker 2: We did. We just wore them out over and over.
- 16:38Speaker 2: And that's become kind of a theme here, not just
- 16:41Speaker 2: against Michigan State this game, but, you know, last year.
- 16:44Speaker 2: I think it started last year before, you know, the
- 16:49Speaker 2: end of the season happened. And then so far what
- 16:51Speaker 2: we've seen this year, which is really, really good. Like,
- 16:56Speaker 2: don't overlook that. It's really good.
- 16:58Speaker 3: And we haven't talked about defense yet.
- 17:00Speaker 4: I don't know if you're ready to transition, but we
- 17:02Speaker 4: did have six sacks, which– we've been talking about getting
- 17:06Speaker 4: pressure and getting in the backfield and we were, we
- 17:09Speaker 4: were there and they.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Didn't have any, they didn't have any injuries on their
- 17:12Speaker 3: offensive line to mine.
- 17:15Speaker 1: I mean, if we're talking about defense here, I was
- 17:17Speaker 1: super impressed with him. That, that quarterback I said coming
- 17:19Speaker 1: in sucks. He actually was not horrible. Like, like some
- 17:24Speaker 1: of the past he threw, I was like, man, he's,
- 17:27Speaker 1: he's a, he might lie us up, but our D
- 17:30Speaker 1: line and especially linebackers and all that, I thought, impressive
- 17:35Speaker 1: defense like I thought we played one heck of a
- 17:38Speaker 1: game all.
- 17:39Speaker 2: Around yeah I guess I don't know how you're evaluating
- 17:45Speaker 2: quarterbacks or what you're watching I don't I didn't think
- 17:47Speaker 2: the guy was great I I mean he no not
- 17:50Speaker 2: he he was he was fine I they tried putting
- 17:54Speaker 2: in their backup a little bit early on and he
- 17:56Speaker 2: was the one that threw the the first pick to
- 18:00Speaker 2: shambles there like I I The guy was fine. He's
- 18:05Speaker 2: a below average Big Ten quarterback and whatever. But I
- 18:09Speaker 2: do think our defense, especially up front, coming off the
- 18:14Speaker 2: five sack performance last week, to top that on the road,
- 18:19Speaker 2: we did a lot of really damn good things. And
- 18:21Speaker 2: here's the big thing, too. We didn't make catastrophic mistakes
- 18:25Speaker 2: on defense, a blown coverage, a couple of missed tackles.
- 18:29Speaker 2: Their drive, they had to go down and earn it.
- 18:31Speaker 2: the one, one of the first drives they had the
- 18:34Speaker 2: field goal drive. I'm like, Oh crap. Cause we had
- 18:35Speaker 2: a couple of penalties on that, that I'm like, they
- 18:38Speaker 2: can't do it. They're not moving the ball on us,
- 18:40Speaker 2: but we gave them a couple of penalties. And I
- 18:42Speaker 2: don't remember what they were. There was a, I think
- 18:45Speaker 2: a holding or something.
- 18:46Speaker 1: Wait, wait, wait one second on her. The swarm tackling
- 18:50Speaker 1: on defense was another thing. Like just having, there was
- 18:53Speaker 1: like four or five people there all the time. I was,
- 18:57Speaker 1: that was something I was so impressed with that game too. The, the,
- 19:01Speaker 1: Always have, like, not giving up on plays either. Just
- 19:04Speaker 1: the swarm tackling was something I was very impressed with.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Yep. So the other thing that I guess we couldn't
- 19:19Speaker 2: even really tell, but that I thought made a statement
- 19:23Speaker 2: or that basically, I would say, put the nail in
- 19:25Speaker 2: the coffin and talk about special teams here. I think
- 19:31Speaker 2: we've got it to a good theme. If you can
- 19:33Speaker 2: make plays on special teams, they are huge. But the
- 19:35Speaker 2: biggest thing on special teams is don't have catastrophic mistakes.
- 19:39Speaker 2: That's the biggest thing. And I didn't realize this watching
- 19:43Speaker 2: it live. It looked like it was just a horrible kick,
- 19:45Speaker 2: but we actually did. get eight.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I think you froze up, Hunter.
- 19:51Speaker 2: Oh, I'm still here.
- 19:52Speaker 3: Is Dak still here? I don't know how this audio
- 19:55Speaker 3: is going to work. Nope.
- 19:56Speaker 1: But anyway.
- 20:58Speaker 2: Well, I think I'm still rolling here. We have some
- 21:03Speaker 2: Google Meet issues, so we'll see if we can get
- 21:06Speaker 2: back in to the podcast here and get Austin and
- 21:11Speaker 2: Dak back on. The biggest thing that I was saying, we.
- 21:19Speaker 1: He will fight for his team. That's another thing. That's true. Like,
- 21:24Speaker 1: you be sneaking stuff like that, he's in there pushing.
- 21:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:29Speaker 1: I mean, yeah.
- 21:30Speaker 2: Yeah. Dak, I don't know if you realize this, but
- 21:33Speaker 2: I'm hosting the show. So whatever you just said, I
- 21:36Speaker 2: don't know what you're talking about.
- 21:38Speaker 3: You froze.
- 21:40Speaker 2: Uh, but yeah, I don't know. Google me just shut
- 21:44Speaker 2: off on me, but we're back. I think we're all
- 21:47Speaker 2: back here and we're still rolling. We're just going to
- 21:49Speaker 2: have a little bit of a pause there. So that
- 21:52Speaker 2: continue wherever you're at.
- 21:55Speaker 1: All right. I was just saying that we, we finally
- 21:57Speaker 1: have a quarterback.
- 21:59Speaker 3: I don't know if that's a fair statement. I think
- 22:02Speaker 3: Guerrero was a pretty good quarterback. Just be like, oh boy,
- 22:05Speaker 3: we've been quarterbackless for so long.
- 22:07Speaker 1: It's like, I don't know.
- 22:09Speaker 3: We haven't worried about the quarterback position for a couple
- 22:11Speaker 3: of years. For what?
- 22:14Speaker 2: Yeah, to that point, I can almost guarantee you I
- 22:18Speaker 2: can go back and clip Dak saying, we finally have
- 22:21Speaker 2: a quarterback a year ago.
- 22:23Speaker 1: With T.J.
- 22:24Speaker 3: Lateef?
- 22:30Speaker 4: Anyways, Hunter, you were saying that the special teams wasn't
- 22:32Speaker 4: catastrophic to our.
- 22:34Speaker 2: Yeah. I just think that, like, we... So, yeah, the
- 22:38Speaker 2: blocked punt... Special teams wasn't quite catastrophic. It wasn't catastrophic.
- 22:42Speaker 2: And if you don't have those plays, it's huge. I
- 22:45Speaker 2: didn't realize, watching the game live, that their field goal
- 22:50Speaker 2: to then cut it to one possession after, in the
- 22:53Speaker 2: third quarter, they had a drive. Our offense had been
- 22:56Speaker 2: stalling completely. to start the third quarter. I think we
- 22:59Speaker 2: went three and out, three possessions in a row. They
- 23:01Speaker 2: put together a little small drive, go down, have a
- 23:03Speaker 2: field goal. We block it, get a hand on it,
- 23:07Speaker 2: and then go down and score the next drive to
- 23:12Speaker 2: make it what the game ended up. Like, that right
- 23:14Speaker 2: there was like, yep, lock it in, game over. And again,
- 23:20Speaker 2: that was a huge, it's a huge play on special
- 23:22Speaker 2: teams to do that. I know it was still a 52-yarder,
- 23:25Speaker 2: so it It still was a tough kick, even if
- 23:29Speaker 2: it did. But then the other special teams play that
- 23:33Speaker 2: could have been catastrophic but didn't was the opposite punt
- 23:38Speaker 2: that Archie– watching it live, and I did never get
- 23:43Speaker 2: a chance to go back and look at the replay. Like, yeah,
- 23:45Speaker 2: the guy blocked it, but, like, the kick was going
- 23:47Speaker 2: to be, like, five feet off the ground anyways.
- 23:49Speaker 3: It was a horrible kick. It was a bad kick.
- 23:51Speaker 1: Yeah, it was a bad punt.
- 23:53Speaker 2: So– and we get, we get lucky that there is
- 23:56Speaker 2: a hold on the line of scrimmage and maybe, you know,
- 23:58Speaker 2: the block happened because of the hold, like right away,
- 24:02Speaker 2: the timing of that was all weird too. Like I,
- 24:04Speaker 2: I still am like, I've, I've rarely seen a hold
- 24:08Speaker 2: happen on the defense before the kick to give the
- 24:16Speaker 2: offense a first down. Yeah.
- 24:19Speaker 4: That was definitely the call that if you're a Michigan fan,
- 24:21Speaker 4: you're like Michigan state fan, you're, I would be upset.
- 24:26Speaker 4: If that happened to us, there's a 100% chance that
- 24:29Speaker 4: I would have made a slight comment. I'd be like, yeah,
- 24:32Speaker 4: that call was bullshit.
- 24:33Speaker 3: Because it was. It definitely was.
- 24:34Speaker 2: I totally understand the rule because it happened before the kick.
- 24:40Speaker 2: Here's my question. If the punt would have been a
- 24:43Speaker 2: good punt and got off and went in the air...
- 24:46Speaker 2: They called a hold, right, on them. And I will say,
- 24:49Speaker 2: I saw the flags right away. The two refs came
- 24:51Speaker 2: in and chucked them. I mean, it was immediate. It
- 24:53Speaker 2: wasn't like it was on the return. It's just funny.
- 24:57Speaker 2: You don't ever see a defense hold, I guess, on–
- 25:02Speaker 2: Trying to block the punt. But I also feel like–
- 25:06Speaker 2: I mean, you're not taught to hold, obviously. But if
- 25:08Speaker 2: you're setting up a return on a punt, like your
- 25:12Speaker 2: job is to hold up– the offensive line, the corners,
- 25:17Speaker 2: the gunners.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Give your guy more time.
- 25:19Speaker 2: So, I don't know. Just the fact that we've never
- 25:21Speaker 2: seen it called in any, I mean, not even in
- 25:22Speaker 2: the NFL. Like, you just don't see it very often.
- 25:25Speaker 2: And it gave us a first down when a big
- 25:28Speaker 2: momentum play on that drive. I don't know. It was unique.
- 25:32Speaker 2: I'll put it that way. And we'll take those plays
- 25:35Speaker 2: and we can get them.
- 25:36Speaker 1: I mean, that was the play, too, where Fitzgerald just
- 25:38Speaker 1: lost his stuff, too. Like, he's like, you've got to
- 25:41Speaker 1: be kidding me there. I mean, Fitzgerald. That was one
- 25:45Speaker 1: of the games where he came out of like he
- 25:47Speaker 1: had his head down with injuries. The refs wise to
- 25:50Speaker 1: like you. He's just like, I don't know what I
- 25:52Speaker 1: can do here. Yeah.
- 25:56Speaker 3: You did mention one of the less.
- 25:59Speaker 4: It's another game where a third quarter offense just kind
- 26:02Speaker 4: of looked flat.
- 26:03Speaker 3: And I don't know what is struggle.
- 26:05Speaker 4: I don't know what the take is there, but it's
- 26:07Speaker 4: just something to note that it just felt.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Like another game. We've been really good in the third
- 26:11Speaker 2: quarter this year so far. I don't know. I guess
- 26:15Speaker 2: we had the one game last game. We scored a
- 26:17Speaker 2: touchdown in our first play of the third quarter.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Correct.
- 26:20Speaker 4: Yes.
- 26:21Speaker 3: We had the one 80 by the side of that.
- 26:23Speaker 4: It just feels like our, and that was a one breakaway,
- 26:27Speaker 4: but it just feels, it feels like a third quarter
- 26:29Speaker 4: is our offense.
- 26:29Speaker 3: It just kind of feels clunky. I don't, I don't,
- 26:32Speaker 3: it feels different than the first two quarters. I don't
- 26:33Speaker 3: understand why. Yeah.
- 26:38Speaker 2: It definitely didn't start off. Well, like we, I, I
- 26:41Speaker 2: do think part of it is, and I don't disagree
- 26:45Speaker 2: with this, but at the same time, you know, there's
- 26:47Speaker 2: a fine line of game script and how you're playing.
- 26:53Speaker 2: When you have the lead, the 24, what were we
- 26:57Speaker 2: up at halftime, the 24-13?
- 26:59Speaker 3: 24-13.
- 27:00Speaker 1: Yep.
- 27:01Speaker 2: When you have a 24-13 lead at halftime, you're basically
- 27:03Speaker 2: coming out and you're saying, okay, they can't move the
- 27:05Speaker 2: ball if we don't, you know, give them, give a
- 27:07Speaker 2: big play. All we got to do is just take
- 27:11Speaker 2: care of it. We don't got to get cute. And,
- 27:15Speaker 2: keep it simple, let the clock kind of take away
- 27:17Speaker 2: and run and win the game. Not saying that's what
- 27:19Speaker 2: we did to start, but it did. We went three
- 27:21Speaker 2: and out three times in a row. Like, like it,
- 27:23Speaker 2: it wasn't a good start, but, but then again, after
- 27:27Speaker 2: that block field goal and went down and scored, then
- 27:30Speaker 2: you're like, okay.
- 27:34Speaker 2: And let the clock go.
- 27:37Speaker 2: So I don't know. Yeah, it was, it was, it
- 27:41Speaker 2: was a little bit like, yeah, what was that? But
- 27:42Speaker 2: like I said, that, I think you're going to have,
- 27:47Speaker 2: unless you're so much better than them, you're going to
- 27:51Speaker 2: have lapses and drives in quarters. You're going to have
- 27:57Speaker 2: some errors, mistakes, but what they can't end up being
- 28:01Speaker 2: is catastrophic. I keep going back to that word. That's
- 28:05Speaker 2: the big thing. It's not ever going to look perfect
- 28:07Speaker 2: for all four quarters, but you can't.
- 28:09Speaker 4: Catastrophic we still had seven penalties but there's only for
- 28:12Speaker 4: six not you know only for 60 yards but you
- 28:15Speaker 4: know we didn't have that 15 yard penalty we didn't
- 28:17Speaker 4: have a ton of holding penalties that moved the chains way.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Back yeah penalties are a good example too there's i'm
- 28:23Speaker 2: not going to say there's good penalties but the catastrophic
- 28:26Speaker 2: penalties that third.
- 28:28Speaker 4: Down and eight that we do a whole you know
- 28:30Speaker 4: a defensive holding on.
- 28:32Speaker 2: Or i mean even go let's go worse the late
- 28:34Speaker 2: hits out of bounds or the Michigan State had one
- 28:37Speaker 2: of those. They had one of their defensive linemen do
- 28:42Speaker 2: a nut shot to give us a first down. An
- 28:45Speaker 2: extra 15 yards on that same drive. The catastrophic penalty
- 28:49Speaker 2: in the Texas-Tennessee game. Third down of celebrating. That kind
- 28:55Speaker 2: of stuff is what I'm saying is really bad stuff.
- 28:57Speaker 2: That's just undisciplined.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Stupid stuff.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Some penalties are going to happen because you're just playing
- 29:05Speaker 2: hard and you're But the bad, stupid penalties are the
- 29:09Speaker 2: ones– and I just don't feel like there were a
- 29:11Speaker 2: lot of those on our end anyways, which, again, is good.
- 29:15Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess as we're kind of wrapping up, I
- 29:22Speaker 4: was thinking about this game as far as what it
- 29:26Speaker 4: made me think about the team and how it made
- 29:28Speaker 4: me change my outlook as.
- 29:29Speaker 3: A team and our success this season.
- 29:32Speaker 4: I still don't know if I moved the needle enough
- 29:34Speaker 4: for me to say seven and five is still what
- 29:36Speaker 4: I expect to happen.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I bumped up from the six and six that I
- 29:39Speaker 3: felt after week one.
- 29:40Speaker 1: One.
- 29:41Speaker 3: But. I don't know.
- 29:44Speaker 4: It's still I think the teams on our schedule look
- 29:48Speaker 4: better than some look better, some look worse.
- 29:52Speaker 3: And I still I still think it's it's going to
- 29:54Speaker 3: be an interesting season. I don't know.
- 29:55Speaker 4: I think I think we're going to.
- 29:57Speaker 3: Be more competitive in a lot more games.
- 30:00Speaker 1: Can we give a shout-out to a guy that we
- 30:02Speaker 1: did not think was going to be anywhere near the
- 30:05Speaker 1: field this year? It's Vincent Genitone, which I'm going to
- 30:08Speaker 1: botch this guy's name. Genitone.
- 30:10Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah. Genitone.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Don't put the E on it.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Then you have it.
- 30:17Speaker 1: Genitone. What? When he was on the field, I was like,
- 30:19Speaker 1: who is this guy? Man, that was a guy coming
- 30:23Speaker 1: in the year we did not expect to even have
- 30:24Speaker 1: a single play coming in. But, man, did he have
- 30:27Speaker 1: a great game on Saturday.
- 30:28Speaker 3: It's true.
- 30:30Speaker 2: I agree. That's something I mean nobody. I think maybe
- 30:33Speaker 2: some of the coaches thought that. Jamal Rule goes down.
- 30:37Speaker 2: He got an opportunity to get his moment. He played
- 30:42Speaker 2: scout team for Michigan State all week. I guess once
- 30:46Speaker 2: your player on scout team goes down, you get a
- 30:49Speaker 2: chance to go in the game.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 30:51Speaker 2: I guess that's how that works. But he was playing
- 30:54Speaker 2: Cam Edwards and he gets to come in and Scores
- 30:58Speaker 2: two touchdowns on a couple of different plays. A big touchdown.
- 31:01Speaker 1: We didn't mention this before the game, too.
- 31:03Speaker 2: Right before half. Where, like, it'd been nice to get
- 31:06Speaker 2: some points. I won't nitpick some of the maybe the
- 31:10Speaker 2: time management stuff again that I felt like we maybe
- 31:13Speaker 2: screwed up there right before half, but it didn't matter
- 31:15Speaker 2: because we made a play and went down and scored
- 31:18Speaker 2: a touchdown with two seconds left. So now you look
- 31:20Speaker 2: like a genius, and now time management was perfect.
- 31:24Speaker 3: I'm telling you, in the moment, I was like, what
- 31:26Speaker 3: the hell are we doing?
- 31:28Speaker 1: I was yelling on the screen like, we are not
- 31:32Speaker 1: doing this right at all. But then, you know what?
- 31:34Speaker 1: It worked out.
- 31:35Speaker 2: And Rule probably goes, see, I told you guys, I
- 31:37Speaker 2: knew that was going to happen. I expected it. That
- 31:39Speaker 2: was the plan. Scored two seconds.
- 31:42Speaker 3: I think that he was genuinely fine with getting a
- 31:44Speaker 3: field goal.
- 31:45Speaker 4: I think he was like, I don't care about a touchdown,
- 31:48Speaker 4: which I didn't love, but that's right.
- 31:53Speaker 2: Good job, Dak, shouting him out because I think that
- 31:55Speaker 2: was very worthy of it. And the other person, you guys,
- 31:59Speaker 2: we might have been talking while we had our audio issues. But, again,
- 32:03Speaker 2: just going back to Calandria. And he just, the mobility,
- 32:12Speaker 2: it's not even really his mobility, but his playmaking capability.
- 32:16Speaker 2: That's the word I like. He's a gamer. He's a
- 32:18Speaker 2: playmaker with his arm and his feet. He's just played
- 32:23Speaker 2: so much football on the road. Things don't phase him.
- 32:26Speaker 2: You want to talk about comparing him to any of
- 32:29Speaker 2: these Michigan State quarterbacks. They're not even on the same
- 32:32Speaker 2: planet right now. Is Calandria right now leading the Heisman race?
- 32:37Speaker 1: No.
- 32:40Speaker 2: It'll be interesting if we keep winning games. I think
- 32:43Speaker 2: there's obviously a couple big statement games here coming up
- 32:45Speaker 2: on our schedule. The guy just does a lot of
- 32:50Speaker 2: little things that it makes a huge difference in the game.
- 32:55Speaker 2: And I, and I think he's a really good leader.
- 32:57Speaker 2: Like I think, I think the guys on the field,
- 33:00Speaker 2: he's perfect for what we need.
- 33:02Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 33:02Speaker 2: And I think the guys really, really respect him. I
- 33:04Speaker 2: think they really appreciate his leadership too. And you're right. I,
- 33:09Speaker 2: you want to have the Ryola, um, Calandra debate for
- 33:13Speaker 2: the billionth time. We can do that. But like, bottom
- 33:16Speaker 2: line is he fits Nebraska better. He fits our culture better.
- 33:20Speaker 2: He fits the state. Like, Not even just football. He
- 33:22Speaker 2: fits our personality better of a tough-minded, like, work hard,
- 33:28Speaker 2: doing all the little things. Like, that fits him a
- 33:31Speaker 2: lot better here at Nebraska. And I will say, I
- 33:34Speaker 2: don't know that we necessarily, like, probably thought that in
- 33:37Speaker 2: the moment with someone like Dylan Raiola. But, like, Dylan
- 33:41Speaker 2: had a really good game against USC at Oregon as
- 33:46Speaker 2: he came in for the backup for the Dante Moore thing,
- 33:49Speaker 2: which was scary. I heard just concussion for him, but
- 33:52Speaker 2: like Dylan, I Dylan is a good quarterback. Like, and
- 33:57Speaker 2: with the right things around him too, you know, he, he, he's,
- 34:00Speaker 2: he's good too. Like, I still think he could have
- 34:03Speaker 2: a good pro career. He just is a very different
- 34:06Speaker 2: style and leadership style included. Like, I just think all
- 34:10Speaker 2: of that stuff just did. It wasn't a good fit.
- 34:12Speaker 2: It's easy to say that now I get it. It's
- 34:14Speaker 2: easy to say that now versus in the moment. Cause
- 34:16Speaker 2: we weren't saying that in the moment, just like we
- 34:18Speaker 2: didn't say that Scott Frost was a, a huge failure
- 34:21Speaker 2: either when we had him in year one. Like it just,
- 34:24Speaker 2: you don't realize some of the stuff in the moment.
- 34:26Speaker 2: And then eventually everybody at some point has their thought of, Nope,
- 34:30Speaker 2: this is not going to work. And it might be
- 34:32Speaker 2: game one. It might be game 18. It might be
- 34:34Speaker 2: game 40 with whatever we're talking about, but you realize, Nope,
- 34:39Speaker 2: let's move on something next. And that's what happened with him.
- 34:42Speaker 2: So Calandria coming in has been a, again, not just
- 34:46Speaker 2: the big things that the big plays that you see,
- 34:48Speaker 2: The small things, I think, are what really make a
- 34:50Speaker 2: difference with this offense.
- 34:53Speaker 4: We probably got him at a little cheaper cost, so
- 34:55Speaker 4: we could spend more money on our offensive line this offseason.
- 34:59Speaker 3: A little bit more of a bargain, you know?
- 35:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm just– the way that Ryola, like you were saying,
- 35:10Speaker 1: fits our team, he's a good quarterback, but Calandra just
- 35:15Speaker 1: fits us way better for what I feel like.
- 35:19Speaker 2: My last thing before we go here, I think you
- 35:25Speaker 2: talk about opponents, you talk about who we've played so far,
- 35:30Speaker 2: and I know you guys mentioned on Thursday, don't be
- 35:34Speaker 2: scared to play a big-time opponent in the non-conference. I
- 35:38Speaker 2: want to ask you, was Michigan State good enough for you?
- 35:39Speaker 2: Is that a good enough, like, game to beat?
- 35:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:43Speaker 1: Yes.
- 35:43Speaker 2: Okay. So, and I just want to say this, too. Like,
- 35:47Speaker 2: Michigan State was our first, like, Call it test on
- 35:52Speaker 2: the road. Get the win. 4-0.
- 35:55Speaker 4: Right?
- 35:56Speaker 2: We're going good. Here's what I think we're going to
- 35:58Speaker 2: start to hear now. I mean, we have Maryland next week.
- 36:01Speaker 2: We'll talk about them later. We're going to start to
- 36:06Speaker 2: get some, I'm going to call it pressure, but just
- 36:09Speaker 2: some outside noise here. And I feel like this team
- 36:12Speaker 2: so far, we've said it in the offseason, hasn't had any, really.
- 36:16Speaker 2: And maybe that's because it's intentionally being shut down. kind
- 36:21Speaker 2: of keeping it quiet under the radar, we're going to
- 36:25Speaker 2: start to hear some good positive conversation of where things
- 36:27Speaker 2: are going from a lot of people. So, like, you
- 36:31Speaker 2: get a big-time win here against, you know, your toughest
- 36:35Speaker 2: team so far. Let's just keep our heads down and
- 36:38Speaker 2: keep working. I think that's a very good message for us. Maryland, again,
- 36:43Speaker 2: we'll talk about them with where they're at, but it's
- 36:46Speaker 2: another conference game, right? And you just got to keep
- 36:48Speaker 2: going one game at a time. and finding a way
- 36:52Speaker 2: to win the game however you can, however ugly it is,
- 36:54Speaker 2: because what matters is the win column. And where we're
- 36:58Speaker 2: at as a program, and I was going to get
- 37:01Speaker 2: into a debate of this with you guys now, but
- 37:04Speaker 2: we're getting short on time because Dak showed up late.
- 37:06Speaker 2: But anyways, we need wins on our schedule. And so non-conference,
- 37:14Speaker 2: you put teams on that you can win, and now...
- 37:19Speaker 2: You win the game that's in front of you. Like,
- 37:22Speaker 2: that's what matters. And so you do that, you're going
- 37:24Speaker 2: to set yourself up for a pretty good spot at
- 37:27Speaker 2: the end of the year.
- 37:28Speaker 4: I'm glad you cherry-picked parts of our argument. You didn't
- 37:32Speaker 4: factor in that we said in the future when the
- 37:34Speaker 4: thing expands, 16 teams or a different spot as a program. But,
- 37:37Speaker 4: you know, that's totally fine.
- 37:38Speaker 3: You're right.
- 37:39Speaker 1: I agree.
- 37:39Speaker 2: If we are a top 15 team, it's different.
- 37:44Speaker 4: Well, I think when they expand to 16 teams, I
- 37:47Speaker 4: do think there's going to be multiple 10-2 teams, and
- 37:50Speaker 4: strength of schedule will matter at some point. You know,
- 37:54Speaker 4: when there's– so– but, no, this is the.
- 37:58Speaker 3: Type of game. I'm not talking– yeah, you're right.
- 38:01Speaker 2: It might. If there's 16 teams or 24 teams, and
- 38:05Speaker 2: let's just say you're not in the Big Ten. I
- 38:07Speaker 2: know that's not realistic. And schedule 12 MAAC teams and
- 38:11Speaker 2: go 12-0. They're putting in– They're putting you in. As Nebraska,
- 38:15Speaker 2: they're putting you in. If you play Cupcakes and there's
- 38:18Speaker 2: an expanded playoff, I think it actually helps you more
- 38:20Speaker 2: to get in because you're undefeated. I think a loss
- 38:24Speaker 2: matters a lot more as a playoff gets bigger. You
- 38:29Speaker 2: want more wins because if you're 11-1, they're going to
- 38:31Speaker 2: put you in most likely.
- 38:33Speaker 3: That's true. Yeah, you're right.
- 38:35Speaker 2: That's my point. We're in the Big Ten. We're going
- 38:40Speaker 2: to play good teams regardless of So unless you're like
- 38:45Speaker 2: fighting for a bye or a home game or that part,
- 38:50Speaker 2: that next step of the playoffs, there's no reason to
- 38:52Speaker 2: play a better team. And I also think Matt ruled
- 38:56Speaker 2: it wasn't, if you guys listened to him when they
- 38:58Speaker 2: asked him about it, I don't think he was thrilled
- 38:59Speaker 2: we got Notre Dame on our schedule. He's like, I
- 39:01Speaker 2: trust Troy Dan and his decision-making on that. Like, I
- 39:06Speaker 2: don't know.
- 39:06Speaker 3: And I think as an administration, I think you're totally right.
- 39:10Speaker 4: As a fan, though, I don't want to watch North Dakota,
- 39:13Speaker 4: North Dakota State, South Dakota State every year. And you're
- 39:17Speaker 4: going to say, I just want to watch us win,
- 39:20Speaker 4: and I'm going to say, I want to watch us
- 39:21Speaker 4: win against a team that we should beat.
- 39:23Speaker 3: That's a little more fun to watch.
- 39:25Speaker 1: Yeah, as a fan, by game three against North Dakota,
- 39:28Speaker 1: I was like, all right, let's play somebody real.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Selfish thinking. Got to think better for the outcome of
- 39:33Speaker 2: the season. That's not about you, Dak.
- 39:36Speaker 3: That's what being a fan is. Think about the team. No,
- 39:40Speaker 3: wait a minute. That's their job. My job is me, me, me.
- 39:46Speaker 2: All right. Well, I'll be back tomorrow. Dak will be
- 39:50Speaker 2: here Wednesday and then Thursday. I guess we'll sprinkle in
- 39:55Speaker 2: here the next couple of days some Maryland here. Fun week, guys.
- 39:59Speaker 2: Fun to be 4-0. Don't ever underappreciate a road win
- 40:04Speaker 2: in the Big Ten. That is a very good win.
- 40:10Speaker 2: You feel pretty good if you're a Husker fan, you're
- 40:12Speaker 2: a Husker player, you're a Husker coach, you're a Husker
- 40:14Speaker 2: media member. You feel very good about where things are
- 40:16Speaker 2: at right now. Let's keep it moving. Go Big Red.
- 40:20Speaker 3: TBR. Yo, Big Red.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Big Red. Go Big Red!
- 40:52Speaker 2: See you next episode!
