- 0:00Speaker 1: We are out of the gates on Sport and State.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Happy Labor Day to everyone. He is Chad Withrow. I'm
- 0:07Speaker 1: Jonathan Hutton. This is Hutton and Withrow live at sportandstate.com.
- 0:11Speaker 1: We are presented by Hard Rock Bet. Chad, man, it
- 0:15Speaker 1: is great to have football back. It was a lot
- 0:19Speaker 1: of blowout. In fact, at one point Saturday night, I
- 0:24Speaker 1: did the math. A combined score Saturday night of 273
- 0:27Speaker 1: to 27. at some random point in the night. But
- 0:32Speaker 1: we have plenty to talk about and react to today.
- 0:36Speaker 1: Not great.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Not a great weekend of big-time matchups, but great having
- 0:40Speaker 2: football back.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Hunt, it's good to be here with you.
- 0:42Speaker 2: We will celebrate Labor Day by laboring for you, so
- 0:45Speaker 2: you don't have to on this day.
- 0:46Speaker 1: We will talk about all the games for you. We'll
- 0:49Speaker 1: talk with you in the YouTube chat, so be sure
- 0:51Speaker 1: to hit us up there. I'll be there all morning.
- 0:54Speaker 2: But, yeah, I look at this college football weekend, and
- 0:57Speaker 2: we're going to get into the huge stories that happened,
- 0:59Speaker 2: and there were a few of them. But my big
- 1:02Speaker 2: takeaway was awesome to have it back, but also sort
- 1:05Speaker 2: of a missed opportunity for college football.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm sitting there yesterday.
- 1:09Speaker 2: I'm thinking there's a full day of a weekend, of
- 1:12Speaker 2: a Labor Day weekend. You get this time slot the
- 1:15Speaker 2: week before the NFL starts, and it just felt like
- 1:18Speaker 2: a missed opportunity.
- 1:19Speaker 1: You're not starting early.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Your football day until, what, 4 o'clock Eastern time with
- 1:23Speaker 2: the Apple Cup, with Washington and Washington State. There should
- 1:26Speaker 2: have been three to five more games on Sunday than
- 1:29Speaker 2: there were. They should have started at 11 a.m. Central,
- 1:31Speaker 2: noon Eastern on Sunday. You split the difference. That Notre
- 1:36Speaker 2: Dame-Wisconsin game should have been at 11 a.m., put Ole
- 1:39Speaker 2: Miss and Louisville at night in primetime. The lack of
- 1:43Speaker 2: cooperation amongst the networks when it comes to these things
- 1:47Speaker 2: and college football as a whole and the fact that
- 1:49Speaker 2: it's a bunch of separate fiefdoms within the sport, leads
- 1:53Speaker 2: to things like this, where in the NFL you don't
- 1:55Speaker 2: have that problem because they're all collaborating to give you
- 1:59Speaker 2: the best possible lineup and times for different games.
- 2:03Speaker 1: But, Hutton, it's still great to.
- 2:04Speaker 2: Have games back, and we did get a few games
- 2:08Speaker 2: that were great that we weren't really expecting to be
- 2:10Speaker 2: much at all.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Yeah, and we'll get into Michigan's finish, of course, LSU
- 2:15Speaker 1: just driving Clemson and much more. Chad, I've got an idea, though,
- 2:21Speaker 1: for Nashville. We have the Music City Bowl. Nashville should
- 2:26Speaker 1: create their own Music City Bowl kickoff bowl, where each year,
- 2:32Speaker 1: I know Florida State and Alabama, for instance, in a
- 2:34Speaker 1: couple of seasons, they're going to be playing at the
- 2:36Speaker 1: Dome to kick off their season. There should be an
- 2:39Speaker 1: annual bowl, quote-unquote, that kicks off the season here. with
- 2:45Speaker 1: everything going on last night, I'm thinking this should happen
- 2:48Speaker 1: every single year where you have ranked teams ahead of
- 2:51Speaker 1: the season facing off. That to me makes sense. And
- 2:56Speaker 1: it's one of the few marquee matchups of the weekend, too.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Well, and let's look at what were the best games
- 3:02Speaker 2: of the weekend. I mean, you know, it felt like
- 3:06Speaker 2: this was going away. because of the need for home
- 3:11Speaker 2: gates and you have to schedule a power four, a
- 3:16Speaker 2: group of four conference team now too within your schedule.
- 3:19Speaker 2: So it felt like this was going to be something
- 3:21Speaker 2: that was the way of 20, 15, 10 years ago.
- 3:25Speaker 2: But we're seeing more of it. I mean, some of
- 3:27Speaker 2: the most successful games of the weekend, Baylor and Auburn
- 3:29Speaker 2: in Atlanta, right? Ole Miss and Louisville in Nashville. The
- 3:35Speaker 2: return of that neutral site game, I mean, Notre Dame-Wisconsin
- 3:37Speaker 2: at Lambeau Field another one of those neutral site games.
- 3:41Speaker 1: Hutton, five years ago, that was the norm.
- 3:43Speaker 2: You had like eight of these games all across the
- 3:46Speaker 2: country pitting premier team versus premier team. I've been to
- 3:50Speaker 2: an Alabama-Florida State game in Atlanta. That same weekend, Tennessee
- 3:55Speaker 2: played Georgia Tech on a Labor Day night in Atlanta.
- 3:58Speaker 2: These games were just spotted throughout the first weekend of
- 4:01Speaker 2: college football. We're seeing less and less of that. I'm
- 4:04Speaker 2: all for it if it gets good teams on the field.
- 4:07Speaker 1: Against each other, right?
- 4:08Speaker 2: Like, however you can make that happen and do it,
- 4:11Speaker 2: let's do it.
- 4:11Speaker 1: And also, we've seen a return.
- 4:13Speaker 2: I know Auburn was one of them, that that was
- 4:14Speaker 2: going to be a home game against Baylor, and they
- 4:17Speaker 2: took the money. They were going to get a payout
- 4:20Speaker 2: and get more money to make it a neutral site
- 4:21Speaker 2: game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. They did that for NIL purposes,
- 4:25Speaker 2: to generate more NIL money for their roster. They went
- 4:28Speaker 2: and played that game in Atlanta instead of home. So
- 4:31Speaker 2: if it can be financially beneficial, Hutton, as we've seen
- 4:33Speaker 2: in the sport, teams are going to find a way to.
- 4:35Speaker 1: Make that decision to do it.
- 4:37Speaker 2: If it helps their bottom line, it helps them give
- 4:39Speaker 2: back to NIL and give.
- 4:40Speaker 1: Back to talent on the roster. Craziness with the finish.
- 4:44Speaker 1: I mean, I was shocked with how things finished with
- 4:47Speaker 1: Michigan and Western Michigan. I know Clay wrote at sportandstate.com,
- 4:51Speaker 1: he will forever believe and remember this as a victory
- 4:56Speaker 1: for Western Michigan. And it's the Bell Mary is what
- 5:00Speaker 1: we should call this. I don't know the ins and
- 5:04Speaker 1: outs of why or how The clocks cannot match up.
- 5:08Speaker 1: But I put this in the category of the same
- 5:12Speaker 1: issues we have as fans watching at home. You're really
- 5:15Speaker 1: watching about a play and a half to two plays
- 5:17Speaker 1: behind the live action. And you think you're watching live.
- 5:22Speaker 1: You're really not. Your streaming services are slowing down the
- 5:26Speaker 1: broadcast anyway so that you don't have lag time with
- 5:29Speaker 1: your internet. Is that what happened with the broadcast? I
- 5:34Speaker 1: don't know how. Why have two clocks? What is the
- 5:36Speaker 1: purpose of that? You and I know exactly the time
- 5:39Speaker 1: with our production staff right now. And it's not off
- 5:42Speaker 1: by half a second. I mean, I don't know how
- 5:46Speaker 1: we view this as fair in any way.
- 5:51Speaker 2: And there's an explanation from the Big Ten. There is
- 5:55Speaker 2: an acceptance from the Mac, from John Steinbrecher, a guy
- 5:58Speaker 2: we know from his time with the OVC. There's an
- 6:01Speaker 2: acceptance from the Western Michigan president. They don't think anything
- 6:03Speaker 2: nefarious happened, and they're satisfied with the explanation and everything else.
- 6:08Speaker 2: I look at this situation, and I hearken back to
- 6:11Speaker 2: one of my favorite films, A Few Good Men. And
- 6:14Speaker 2: in A Few Good Men, Tom Cruise's character gets Jack
- 6:17Speaker 2: Nicholson on the witness stand, and we all know the
- 6:20Speaker 2: famous line, eventually. But as he's interviewing him on the
- 6:24Speaker 2: witness stand, the way he hits at his vanity and
- 6:28Speaker 2: his pride was he comes back after he takes a
- 6:31Speaker 2: sip of water and he says, I actually have one
- 6:33Speaker 2: more question.
- 6:35Speaker 1: Why the two orders? Because if you're so.
- 6:38Speaker 2: All powerful and everyone follows your orders or young men die,
- 6:42Speaker 2: why did you feel the need to go back and
- 6:44Speaker 2: give a second order to someone else on it? That's
- 6:47Speaker 2: my question for the Big Ten. Why the two clocks?
- 6:52Speaker 2: That's the one that no one can answer. There's two clocks.
- 6:56Speaker 2: You go by one at Big Ten headquarters, then that's
- 6:59Speaker 2: the official game clock, not the one that fans see
- 7:02Speaker 2: in the stadium.
- 7:03Speaker 1: Hutton, that's not how sports operate.
- 7:05Speaker 2: There's not two different clocks on a game.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The one that's in the stadium is the clock. I
- 7:10Speaker 1: just talked to someone.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Who's worked in those control booths for years, right before
- 7:14Speaker 2: the show, and that person told me, yeah, they're lying.
- 7:17Speaker 2: You go by the clock in the stadium. That is
- 7:20Speaker 2: the official time. That's what everything is synced up to.
- 7:24Speaker 2: And Mike Pereira, who has done this for the NFL
- 7:27Speaker 2: for years, he even released a statement saying if there
- 7:29Speaker 2: ever was a discrepancy in what you're seeing in a
- 7:33Speaker 2: control room or in the challenge booth to the actual
- 7:36Speaker 2: clock that people see on television, which is the same
- 7:39Speaker 2: clock people see during the game, you go with the
- 7:42Speaker 2: one in the stadium because you don't want to have
- 7:45Speaker 2: any look of conspiracy or the game is rigged. So
- 7:49Speaker 2: you always defer to the one in the stadium. Hutton,
- 7:52Speaker 2: the math doesn't add up on this. There aren't two clocks.
- 7:55Speaker 2: I see people joking that now college football is like
- 7:58Speaker 2: soccer with stoppage time and the game just ends whenever
- 8:01Speaker 2: college football, the powers that be decide that it ends.
- 8:04Speaker 2: But again, I go back to a few good men
- 8:05Speaker 2: when I look at this and I ask the question,
- 8:07Speaker 2: why the two clocks? Much like it's why the two orders.
- 8:10Speaker 2: It doesn't make any sense what the Big Ten is saying.
- 8:13Speaker 1: Now, this is exactly why I want the conversations live
- 8:18Speaker 1: on air at all times. with the referees on the
- 8:21Speaker 1: field and headquarters. We're getting that in the ACC on
- 8:24Speaker 1: select games, just like last year. The Big 12 has
- 8:27Speaker 1: picked this up as well. But with what's at stake
- 8:30Speaker 1: and what's on the line, and the fact that, I mean,
- 8:33Speaker 1: Western Michigan had not picked up a win against, what,
- 8:38Speaker 1: a ranked team since God knows when. Yeah, it's just all,
- 8:44Speaker 1: it feels like the fix was in. It feels like that.
- 8:49Speaker 1: I don't want to believe that because I've heard the
- 8:52Speaker 1: conversation that the officials had. It felt like that was
- 8:57Speaker 1: very natural and by the book, but it feels real
- 9:02Speaker 1: just outside the lines. Here's John Fanta. We love Fanta.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Here's Fanta, Chad, that you said this morning. He's reading
- 9:11Speaker 1: a statement. Yeah, this was at halftime, Hutton. They did this.
- 9:15Speaker 1: They announced. I saw it.
- 9:16Speaker 2: I think Stuart Mandell said there's going to be an
- 9:18Speaker 2: announcement from NBC. Because if you remember it live, and
- 9:20Speaker 2: I know you were watching it too, the NBC broadcast saying,
- 9:23Speaker 2: I'm confused. The rules analyst came on and said, no,
- 9:26Speaker 2: there's no time left. I don't know why they're putting
- 9:28Speaker 2: a second back. That is the Big Ten's partner in
- 9:32Speaker 2: NBC saying, we have no idea how this extra play happened.
- 9:36Speaker 1: So then NBC, the next day.
- 9:39Speaker 2: During the Apple Cup, halftime of Washington State, they had
- 9:44Speaker 2: John Fanta read the following statement.
- 9:47Speaker 3: Official time of the game is kept by the Big Ten.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Our cameras are not the official arbiter of timekeeping within
- 9:54Speaker 3: the game. That is the Big Ten and game officials' responsibility.
- 9:58Speaker 3: After the game last night, the Big Ten released a
- 10:01Speaker 3: statement and raw video from its replay process that showed
- 10:05Speaker 3: how and why the decision was made. Here's a look
- 10:09Speaker 3: back at that video. And with the ball hitting the
- 10:13Speaker 3: defensive back for Western Michigan, That gave Michigan another second
- 10:18Speaker 3: and one last play where J.J. Buchanan came up big.
- 10:26Speaker 1: I can't get enough of Fanta. The one thing that
- 10:29Speaker 1: really just, it didn't piss me off, but I got
- 10:33Speaker 1: tired of is all of the AI or the editing
- 10:36Speaker 1: of this video we just saw were different times. I
- 10:39Speaker 1: didn't know what was what at one point. I know.
- 10:42Speaker 1: But I do know the clock said zero. You know, like, well,
- 10:48Speaker 1: I know.
- 10:48Speaker 2: So Dave Portnoy posted one that I saw him like, oh, well,
- 10:52Speaker 2: this looks like there was a second left. And he's like,
- 10:55Speaker 2: for all the haters out there of Michigan, see, this
- 10:57Speaker 2: was the right call. And there's an editor's note right
- 10:59Speaker 2: underneath said this is a doctored AI video showing that
- 11:02Speaker 2: there's one second left when in fact there wasn't. Again, though,
- 11:06Speaker 2: even what Fanta is saying. NBC is not the arbiter
- 11:10Speaker 2: of the time left in the game on our clock.
- 11:12Speaker 2: Your clock is the stadium clock. They said that during
- 11:15Speaker 2: the broadcast. They said our time is synced with the
- 11:19Speaker 2: stadium time. So they omitted that part, though, right?
- 11:22Speaker 1: Was it not off by a half second or so?
- 11:25Speaker 1: They did not.
- 11:26Speaker 2: And that was my thought was, okay, then what's happening
- 11:28Speaker 2: here is we got it down to like hundreds of
- 11:31Speaker 2: a second, like you would a basketball clock. So there's
- 11:34Speaker 2: some other clock that shows 0.2 seconds. and not just
- 11:38Speaker 2: from one to zero. That's not what they showed. Even
- 11:40Speaker 2: when they showed the still shot of the Big Ten
- 11:43Speaker 2: clock where it shows a second as he's touching the ball,
- 11:46Speaker 2: it's not in 100. So, again, the clock is the clock.
- 11:51Speaker 2: It's the clock in the stadium. That is the official
- 11:54Speaker 2: Big Ten clock. They are making up this, we have
- 11:57Speaker 2: some other system to have a separate clock that could
- 12:00Speaker 2: be different than the one in the stadium. And even
- 12:02Speaker 2: with that, Mike Pereira is coming back and saying, if
- 12:05Speaker 2: there's any discrepancy, you would go with the one in
- 12:08Speaker 2: the stadium. If your clock is off at your headquarters
- 12:12Speaker 2: or wherever you're reviewing, then you go with the one
- 12:15Speaker 2: in the stadium. So there's not even a whiff of
- 12:17Speaker 2: impropriety in the whole deal. That video, that was like
- 12:21Speaker 2: the broadcast version of an Al-Qaeda video being forced to
- 12:24Speaker 2: release a statement from John Fanta, who's fantastic.
- 12:27Speaker 1: And he was just doing his job when he said that.
- 12:29Speaker 2: It still doesn't explain away the hose job that Western
- 12:33Speaker 2: Michigan got.
- 12:34Speaker 1: I will say this, too. The coach.
- 12:37Speaker 2: for Western Michigan. Like he was very professional, handled himself
- 12:41Speaker 2: so well. I would have gotten arrested in that moment
- 12:44Speaker 2: if that was my team. And I was the coach
- 12:47Speaker 2: at Western Michigan in Kalamazoo. And I just went to
- 12:50Speaker 2: Ann Arbor and won the game and held Michigan to
- 12:53Speaker 2: seven points. And they got an extra play to score
- 12:56Speaker 2: their second touchdown to beat me in that moment. I
- 13:00Speaker 2: would have absolutely lost it in that moment. And here's
- 13:03Speaker 2: the other thing too. Everyone's going to come back and say, well,
- 13:07Speaker 2: Western Michigan accepted it. Why can't you? The Mac said
- 13:10Speaker 2: that everything was on the up and up. Why can't
- 13:12Speaker 2: you accept that? The Mac and Western Michigan saying all
- 13:16Speaker 2: this because it benefits them to not piss off the
- 13:19Speaker 2: Big Ten. The Big Ten and the Mac, and go
- 13:21Speaker 2: look at all the games played between those two conferences,
- 13:24Speaker 2: not just this week, but as they gear up for
- 13:26Speaker 2: their conference season this The Big Ten, repeat after me,
- 13:31Speaker 2: the Big Ten subsidizes these MAAC programs. Hutton, this is
- 13:34Speaker 2: something you have not liked for years, that it's not
- 13:37Speaker 2: on the bigger schools to fund the smaller programs, but
- 13:41Speaker 2: that is the case in that conference. They need the
- 13:44Speaker 2: Big Ten checks to come play those games. It does
- 13:47Speaker 2: not behoove Western Michigan or the MAAC to start a
- 13:50Speaker 2: holy war with the Big Ten. They're just going to
- 13:52Speaker 2: sit down and say, we'll take our check.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 13:55Speaker 2: We're going to go along with the company line on
- 13:57Speaker 2: this because Western Michigan wants more games against the Big Ten.
- 14:01Speaker 2: Ohio wants more games against the Big Ten, like the
- 14:04Speaker 2: one they played against Nebraska. Go down the list of
- 14:06Speaker 2: MAC schools that are going to play that round robin
- 14:09Speaker 2: against the Big Ten in September in order to fund
- 14:12Speaker 2: their programs.
- 14:14Speaker 1: I guess the Rutgers didn't get the memo on that.
- 14:19Speaker 1: UMass and Western Michigan were paid the same. A million
- 14:21Speaker 1: and a half. I've said, and you brought it up here,
- 14:25Speaker 1: it is not Tennessee's problem to make sure that MTSU
- 14:29Speaker 1: makes budget. I mean, it's just not. It's a business.
- 14:35Speaker 1: Can you make budget or not? Are you putting out
- 14:38Speaker 1: the product that the fans want or not? It comes
- 14:40Speaker 1: down to that, not can we play one game and
- 14:43Speaker 1: get everything paid for. And that's been the problem with
- 14:47Speaker 1: Week 1 across college football. I look at the— I know
- 14:51Speaker 1: there's nine games in the SEC now, and the schedules
- 14:54Speaker 1: are stacked. But, man, wouldn't it be great to have
- 14:58Speaker 1: a lot more of these conference-versus-conference games this past weekend
- 15:02Speaker 1: with no NFL? They would crush. Chad, you bring up
- 15:05Speaker 1: the ratings throughout the season very well. And we know
- 15:09Speaker 1: which teams dominate millions upon millions of viewers. Think about
- 15:13Speaker 1: this weekend. with what could have been. Man, I mean,
- 15:18Speaker 1: I think they're missing out not just on spreading the
- 15:21Speaker 1: games out more, but also matchup-wise appealing to a bowl
- 15:28Speaker 1: game-like atmosphere where I would actually pay attention to the
- 15:32Speaker 1: Pop-Tarts Bowl if it's this week. There's a way to
- 15:36Speaker 1: get very creative with this, especially this weekend where the
- 15:39Speaker 1: NFL just says, we will not be playing this weekend ever.
- 15:41Speaker 1: We're just going to back up the time for the
- 15:43Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Total missed opportunity, Hutton, I think, for college football.
- 15:47Speaker 2: Even if you just flip a few of the games,
- 15:49Speaker 2: like Tennessee-Georgia Tech could have been this week.
- 15:52Speaker 1: That gives you another good matchup.
- 15:54Speaker 2: I know that they played Colorado on Thursday, which was
- 15:56Speaker 2: a great game. Minnesota-Mississippi State. I'm not asking for the world.
- 16:01Speaker 2: They're playing this week. Could you have had Oklahoma-Michigan this week?
- 16:06Speaker 2: Oklahoma plays whoever they played. And then Michigan plays Western
- 16:10Speaker 2: Michigan in week two. You get more of that pop.
- 16:12Speaker 2: A couple of years ago, we had this where week
- 16:14Speaker 2: one was incredible. We were up and down the board like, wow,
- 16:17Speaker 2: this is something that we've never seen. By the way,
- 16:19Speaker 2: Brooks in our chat says Lance Taylor. I don't know
- 16:21Speaker 2: how I forgot that as the coach for Western Michigan.
- 16:24Speaker 2: Same as Lance Taylor, co-host of Next Round Live, which
- 16:27Speaker 2: you can watch every day, every weekday right after our
- 16:30Speaker 2: show on the Sporting State Network.
- 16:31Speaker 1: At sportandstate.com.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Yes, LT, Lance Taylor, who looked like a fitness model
- 16:37Speaker 2: on the sideline. Sir Swoleo was all yoked up on
- 16:40Speaker 2: the sideline for Western Michigan.
- 16:42Speaker 1: I'm telling you, I would have caused a scene on
- 16:45Speaker 1: the field.
- 16:46Speaker 2: I would have stopped play to get an explanation from
- 16:49Speaker 2: someone in the booth or someone from the Big Ten
- 16:51Speaker 2: as to how there wasn't a zero on that clock
- 16:54Speaker 2: when the ball was touched. They were celebrating. And then,
- 16:56Speaker 2: we have to bring this up too, Hutton. Michigan fans
- 17:00Speaker 2: stormed the field.
- 17:00Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 17:02Speaker 2: I mean, that's weak. What are we doing, Michigan? You
- 17:05Speaker 2: are one of the preeminent powers in college football. Your
- 17:08Speaker 2: own players were walking around stunned and halfway angry for
- 17:13Speaker 2: having to go to the wire against Western Michigan and
- 17:15Speaker 2: didn't really know what just happened and were not in
- 17:18Speaker 2: the mood to celebrate with you as you stormed the field.
- 17:20Speaker 1: That was awful.
- 17:22Speaker 2: A terrible look for Michigan fans that stormed the field
- 17:25Speaker 2: after walking off Western Michigan.
- 17:28Speaker 1: Man, the highs and lows of the emotional play there,
- 17:31Speaker 1: which we're not going to see. I mean, we've never
- 17:34Speaker 1: seen anything like this. Within the game, they still have
- 17:37Speaker 1: to execute the second play. Yeah. And I'll say this, man.
- 17:42Speaker 1: Bryce Underwood's not that good. I'm not impressed so far.
- 17:47Speaker 1: I mean, based on the— if we didn't see the salaries—
- 17:52Speaker 1: the payments go up and up and up we would
- 17:54Speaker 1: be talking about what he's getting paid there and how
- 17:56Speaker 1: he flipped commitments and he went to Michigan and all
- 17:58Speaker 1: this like I uh I just look at it and
- 18:01Speaker 1: think I he's an afterthought right now and so is
- 18:04Speaker 1: Michigan quite frankly there's a lot of work to be
- 18:06Speaker 1: done there and here comes Oklahoma coming off of a
- 18:09Speaker 1: nice performance and an expected win but uh yeah I
- 18:13Speaker 1: know the big house is tough to play a tough
- 18:15Speaker 1: place to visit but the Sooners look like they're uh
- 18:19Speaker 1: They're rocking and rolling, right? And Michigan's still figuring things out.
- 18:23Speaker 2: And I think it's still open. We'll get into this
- 18:24Speaker 2: as the week goes on. But with Hard Rock Bet,
- 18:27Speaker 2: I think it opened at like three and a half.
- 18:29Speaker 1: Yes, it did.
- 18:30Speaker 2: Oklahoma may be favored by three and a half in
- 18:31Speaker 2: the game. So very close line regardless. Yeah, I mean,
- 18:34Speaker 2: it's now all about that game. We're going to see
- 18:37Speaker 2: if Michigan's got anything. Was that just a fluke, a
- 18:41Speaker 2: terrible game played? Is Underwood going to look better?
- 18:44Speaker 1: But, Hun, you're right.
- 18:44Speaker 2: I mean, year one, underwhelming. And the start of year
- 18:47Speaker 2: two could not have gone worse for Bryce Underwood.
- 18:51Speaker 1: Because it's tied to the game. Let's say Michigan wins
- 18:53Speaker 1: against Oklahoma. Let's say they're in the college football playoff discussion.
- 18:59Speaker 1: Doesn't the committee have to go back to this moment
- 19:01Speaker 1: and remember this? Or is this like Notre Dame a
- 19:05Speaker 1: year ago where there are matchups in September that are
- 19:09Speaker 1: never mentioned in December?
- 19:12Speaker 2: I mean, they have to go look at everything.
- 19:14Speaker 1: They have to.
- 19:15Speaker 2: And, look, they look at, like, you know, all these
- 19:19Speaker 2: power metrics and your schedule.
- 19:21Speaker 1: I mean, they quote a ton of stuff on that
- 19:23Speaker 1: committee when they're looking at players.
- 19:25Speaker 2: So that's going to lower that, especially if, let's say,
- 19:27Speaker 2: Western Michigan.
- 19:28Speaker 1: Is a mid-MAC team.
- 19:30Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:30Speaker 1: And they're not even great in the MAC. They're going
- 19:31Speaker 1: to factor all that in. Will it keep them out?
- 19:34Speaker 1: A couple years ago or whatever it was. Will it
- 19:36Speaker 1: keep them out if they're 10-2? No, I don't think so.
- 19:40Speaker 2: I think 10-2 would get them in the college football
- 19:41Speaker 2: playoff if they got to that record with their schedule.
- 19:44Speaker 2: But we're going to know everything we need to know
- 19:47Speaker 2: about Michigan with this next game.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Speaking of the college football playoff, LSU looks ready for
- 19:54Speaker 1: a college football playoff run. A lot to discuss throughout
- 19:57Speaker 1: this game, what it means for Clemson, Dabo, and then
- 20:01Speaker 1: the whole saga of Kiffin and pro players and the
- 20:04Speaker 1: way College Game Day treated this story. It was embarrassing.
- 20:09Speaker 1: Straight ahead here on Hutton and Withrow, we are presented
- 20:11Speaker 1: by Hard Rock Bet. Big news. We've partnered with Hard

- 21:13Speaker 1: Coming up in just a little over an hour, we
- 21:16Speaker 1: have John Talti on the program. A lot to discuss
- 21:18Speaker 1: with Lane Kiffin.
- 21:20Speaker 2: Yeah, he's got a New York Times bestselling book. Lane
- 21:24Speaker 2: being Lane, about Lane Kiffin and his career and his
- 21:27Speaker 2: exit from Ole Miss.
- 21:28Speaker 1: And a lot of.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Newsworthy things going on right now with Lane Kiffin, with LSU,
- 21:32Speaker 2: and with Ole Miss, who wins a great game with
- 21:36Speaker 2: a walk-off field goal last night over Louisville. So excited
- 21:39Speaker 2: to have John Talti spend some time with us on
- 21:41Speaker 2: a Labor Day and talk some college football.
- 21:45Speaker 1: So let's start the conversation of LSU-Clemson because we're going
- 21:49Speaker 1: to dive deep on both Tiger programs.
- 21:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 21:54Speaker 1: The way College Game Day handled this entire storyline of
- 22:00Speaker 1: Kiffin and the NFL players, it was all just a
- 22:04Speaker 1: bunch of fluff. It was mainly, hey, all the stuff
- 22:11Speaker 1: off the field. Today is about football. We're back on
- 22:13Speaker 1: the field. It's great to have college football, but you've
- 22:15Speaker 1: got Herd Street clapping. The entire group is all about that.
- 22:21Speaker 1: They have Kiffin live on the show. They barely bring
- 22:24Speaker 1: it up, and when they do, it's in regard to
- 22:30Speaker 1: all the stuff off the field. Aren't you ready to
- 22:32Speaker 1: get ready for kickoff? Aren't you ready to be about coaching?
- 22:34Speaker 1: That was Saban talking to Kiffin. It was almost like
- 22:38Speaker 1: they were told not to bring it up. How do
- 22:40Speaker 1: you go about doing that when all they've done, all
- 22:44Speaker 1: we've done for the last two weeks— is discuss the
- 22:47Speaker 1: saga where we never see this. We never see this
- 22:51Speaker 1: in the SEC where you have programs turning on programs.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And you have Feinbaum on the SEC network going off
- 22:59Speaker 1: on this. But you don't have the show of record
- 23:03Speaker 1: reflecting the same tone and newsworthiness of it. It was
- 23:09Speaker 1: very bizarre to me.
- 23:11Speaker 2: Very weak and very hard from Feinbaum. I'm glad you
- 23:14Speaker 2: brought that up because... While the flagship brand of college
- 23:17Speaker 2: football for ESPN, College Game Day, is treating Lane Kiffin
- 23:22Speaker 2: with kid gloves and almost acting like, boy, aren't we
- 23:25Speaker 2: all just such a victim because of this story? Man,
- 23:28Speaker 2: we've just been victimized by all these lawsuits.
- 23:30Speaker 1: He's such a great coach, Chad. They keep saying that.
- 23:32Speaker 1: Such a great coach.
- 23:33Speaker 2: Well, the perpetrator of the lawsuit is Lane Kiffin, who
- 23:37Speaker 2: his staff was reaching out trying to get guys to
- 23:39Speaker 2: come back from the NFL, and now he's being sued
- 23:42Speaker 2: by the SEC, his own conference. And they almost completely
- 23:45Speaker 2: leave that part out. Meanwhile, Feinbaum's like, Lane Kiffin's a child.
- 23:49Speaker 2: I've spoken to many people that will kick LSU out
- 23:52Speaker 2: of the conference if he continues to get his way.
- 23:55Speaker 2: All these different things. So very different approaches from both
- 23:58Speaker 2: of those shows on ESPN. And, yeah, I saw quite
- 24:03Speaker 2: a bit of, especially in the open, of, man, it's
- 24:05Speaker 2: just good to have football back. Who cares about everything else?
- 24:09Speaker 2: But I'm thinking, watching that, I'm like, you are the sideshow.
- 24:12Speaker 2: You know, Lane Kiffin, he thrives on this. He's walking
- 24:17Speaker 2: into the stadium with Libby Dunn and some girl that's
- 24:19Speaker 2: on Baywatch and Theo Vaughn.
- 24:21Speaker 1: By the way, I thought Theo Vaughn was a Vandy fan.
- 24:24Speaker 1: What happened?
- 24:25Speaker 2: This guy's the Kenny Chesney of the SEC in terms
- 24:28Speaker 2: of how many times he changes hats and goes to
- 24:31Speaker 2: different schools.
- 24:33Speaker 1: He wants that. He's a Kardashian coach, right?
- 24:38Speaker 2: He thrives off that type of interest, and it doesn't
- 24:41Speaker 2: bother him.
- 24:42Speaker 1: That he gets all this sideshow stuff going on.
- 24:45Speaker 2: And in fact, I mean, if you take the first
- 24:47Speaker 2: game into view of that, it probably helped him the
- 24:51Speaker 2: way Lane Kiffin operates and how his team played.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Well, you know, you have to decide whether or not
- 24:55Speaker 1: you want to have a coach who's going to toe
- 24:59Speaker 1: the line, if not cross it, or if you're going
- 25:01Speaker 1: to have a coach like Dabo who just refuses to
- 25:04Speaker 1: lean into it and is getting passed by. But, you know,
- 25:08Speaker 1: they don't have Dabo on, they have Kiffin on. And
- 25:10Speaker 1: you've got McAfee, this is a quote, What's it been like, man?
- 25:13Speaker 1: You got sued by the SEC. What, just like two
- 25:15Speaker 1: days ago? And Kiffin says, I've really appreciated our friendship.
- 25:19Speaker 1: And this week, your guidance with me, between you and I,
- 25:22Speaker 1: we're about the two most hated people there are. And
- 25:26Speaker 1: McAfee says something to the effect of, sometimes to do
- 25:32Speaker 1: great things, you're going to be hated. And then you
- 25:36Speaker 1: have Saban jump in and discuss... Let's get to football.
- 25:40Speaker 1: Today's about football. You've got Herb Street Club. It was just–
- 25:43Speaker 1: To do great things. To do great things. Sometimes to
- 25:47Speaker 1: do great things you're going– a lot of times to
- 25:49Speaker 1: do great things you're going to be hated is the quote.
- 25:51Speaker 1: A lot of times to do great things you're going
- 25:53Speaker 1: to be hated. He's comparing Kiffin to himself basically.
- 26:00Speaker 2: First off, that exchange was gross between Pat McAfee and
- 26:04Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin, I thought. I've talked to you this week
- 26:06Speaker 2: and you've been a great guiding light And I think
- 26:09Speaker 2: you and I are the two most hated people.
- 26:11Speaker 1: Come on, man.
- 26:13Speaker 2: They're both etching their own faces on some sort of
- 26:16Speaker 2: Mount Rushmore of personalities and people caring way too much
- 26:21Speaker 2: about them. I like Pat McAfee, but let's not take
- 26:24Speaker 2: herself that seriously. And also for Lane Kiff to do that.
- 26:27Speaker 2: And to do great things, you're going to be hated.
- 26:30Speaker 2: I mean, he's acting like he's putting a man on
- 26:32Speaker 2: the moon. for the first time, that he's JFK saying, well,
- 26:35Speaker 2: we'll go to the moon because we decide to go there.
- 26:38Speaker 2: And he's talking about bringing back NFL players to college.
- 26:42Speaker 2: This is not a great thing. No one believes this
- 26:45Speaker 2: is a great thing. This is a great thing for
- 26:47Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin if he can pull it off. And that's
- 26:50Speaker 2: what it's all about. We'll talk to John Talti about it.
- 26:53Speaker 2: It's always about Lane Kiffin. My issue with Lane Kiffin
- 26:58Speaker 2: was less about being all about Lane Kiffin and winning
- 27:01Speaker 2: when he's honest about that And a lot of times
- 27:04Speaker 2: he's now become more honest about that, and he embraces
- 27:07Speaker 2: his villain role.
- 27:08Speaker 1: He doesn't really care. He did it last year. You're right.
- 27:10Speaker 1: And that appears that way.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Hudden, I think if we didn't have that sappy BS
- 27:15Speaker 2: 30 for 30 that ESPN put out about how his
- 27:18Speaker 2: life changed and how he's a– oh, my gosh, Oxford's
- 27:21Speaker 2: been so good for him. He's gotten healthy. He's gotten sober.
- 27:25Speaker 2: His family's with him now. If we didn't have all
- 27:28Speaker 2: of that– to fuel what people thought about Lane Kiffin.
- 27:32Speaker 2: Now you're seeing this. This is the real side of
- 27:34Speaker 2: Lane Kiffin. What we're witnessing, although this is Lane Kiffin,
- 27:37Speaker 2: this is who he is. He doesn't care about you,
- 27:40Speaker 2: doesn't care about me. He doesn't care about his star quarterback.
- 27:43Speaker 2: As long as the star quarterback is healthy and can
- 27:46Speaker 2: help him win games. That is what he is paid
- 27:48Speaker 2: to do. That's what he wants to do. That's all
- 27:51Speaker 2: he cares about. I think the whole curveball with that
- 27:54Speaker 2: documentary they put out, trying to make him some sort
- 27:57Speaker 2: of sympathetic case, I think that's what's kind of turned
- 27:59Speaker 2: people against Lane Kiffin also.
- 28:01Speaker 1: And here we are with ESPN doing this. That's just
- 28:04Speaker 1: how they've covered him the entire time. You know, like
- 28:07Speaker 1: even whenever he's debating whether or not he can coach
- 28:09Speaker 1: Ole Miss while being the LSU, let him coach.
- 28:12Speaker 2: Come on.
- 28:12Speaker 1: I mean, thank you, Paul Feinbaum. That's what we can
- 28:16Speaker 1: say there. On the field, wow. I mean, this was
- 28:20Speaker 1: a 1-800 ass whip. And, you know, on the flip
- 28:25Speaker 1: side of my thoughts on Kiffin– I laughed whenever he
- 28:28Speaker 1: said to, what, Holly Rowe or whatever at halftime. Like,
- 28:32Speaker 1: imagine if we had pro players. You know, like, 31-3
- 28:36Speaker 1: says a lot at halftime. And I don't know what
- 28:39Speaker 1: Dabo says to his team at halftime. I mean, it
- 28:41Speaker 1: was a beatdown. Clemson had 145 total yards in this game.
- 28:46Speaker 2: Wow.
- 28:47Speaker 1: I mean, they did nothing.
- 28:48Speaker 2: The second or third play of the game, they get
- 28:49Speaker 2: an interception. They then don't do anything with it, but
- 28:52Speaker 2: they kick a field goal and go up 3-0.
- 28:53Speaker 4: That was it.
- 28:54Speaker 2: That's all they accomplished the entire game. Lane Kiffin, an
- 28:59Speaker 2: even funnier exchange, was postgame when he was asked, Laura
- 29:02Speaker 2: Rutledge asked him, hey, you said that the Mott game
- 29:06Speaker 2: this week against your scout team is going to be
- 29:07Speaker 2: big to go up against Clemson's offense. And he said,
- 29:11Speaker 2: after that, he said, I didn't know Clemson's offense was
- 29:13Speaker 2: going to be this dysfunctional. He said, our scout team
- 29:15Speaker 2: scored more points against our defense. I mean, he says
- 29:18Speaker 2: that to Laura Rutledge. I mean, you want to talk
- 29:20Speaker 2: about kicking more dirt on the grave of Dabo Sweeney.
- 29:23Speaker 2: I don't think Dabo Sweeney is going to get fired.
- 29:26Speaker 2: I think he'll probably have to leave on his own
- 29:28Speaker 2: if he decides to do that.
- 29:31Speaker 1: And it's all about what Clemson wants.
- 29:32Speaker 2: I mean, he's earned the right to pick when he's
- 29:34Speaker 2: done as the Clemson head coach with what he's done
- 29:37Speaker 2: with that program and the multiple national titles. But I
- 29:41Speaker 2: can't think of a bigger example of a program just
- 29:44Speaker 2: collapsing under the weight of NIL and transfer portal.
- 29:48Speaker 1: And just a stubbornness to adapt.
- 29:51Speaker 2: And now it feels like even with Dabo willing to
- 29:53Speaker 2: adapt a little bit to the modern game and what's happening,
- 29:57Speaker 2: it just seems like too little too late. that Clemson
- 29:59Speaker 2: program that they were completely outmatched in that game.
- 30:02Speaker 1: But I don't know if it's too late because in
- 30:04Speaker 1: the way the landscape is, you can beat Texas Tech
- 30:08Speaker 1: and just flip the roster, but you have to go
- 30:11Speaker 1: all in to do it, right? You have to be
- 30:14Speaker 1: about pay for play and be about one year and
- 30:19Speaker 1: flip it. And that's just not, he refuses to do it.
- 30:22Speaker 1: So like, Clemson may be too late in trying to
- 30:28Speaker 1: find or convince him to do it. I don't think
- 30:31Speaker 1: he's going to ever fully lean into that. Until we
- 30:36Speaker 1: go back to the old rules, we're not going to
- 30:39Speaker 1: see Clemson dominate because, man, they were dominant. Ten wins
- 30:43Speaker 1: after ten wins after ten wins. Two years ago, they
- 30:47Speaker 1: were in the playoff.
- 30:48Speaker 2: Just 2024, they got into the playoff that year. And
- 30:52Speaker 2: last year was a bad year. This is a terrible
- 30:54Speaker 2: start to this year. But I mean, it was just startling.
- 30:58Speaker 2: LSU treated Clemson the way South Carolina treated Kent State
- 31:02Speaker 2: in that game. I mean, that looked like a Mac
- 31:04Speaker 2: team that was paid to come in and get whipped.
- 31:07Speaker 2: That was, it was just, again, for the last 15 years,
- 31:11Speaker 2: what we've known of Clemson and their talent and the
- 31:14Speaker 2: guys they've sent to be good NFL players and all
- 31:17Speaker 2: of that. It was just, Such a difference in speed,
- 31:21Speaker 2: in physicality. Vazina, the quarterback, I thought was below average.
- 31:27Speaker 1: You're right on speed. Look at that game.
- 31:30Speaker 2: It looked like, again, it looked like what South Carolina
- 31:33Speaker 2: looked like against Kent State. That's what Clemson looked like
- 31:37Speaker 2: in that game, which is crazy.
- 31:40Speaker 1: I'm watching that and thinking they're going to have a
- 31:42Speaker 1: few more of these games in the ACC. I'm watching Louisville.
- 31:48Speaker 1: against Ole Miss. I'm watching Miami against Stanford. I don't
- 31:52Speaker 1: see Clemson playing that type of ball. I haven't in
- 31:57Speaker 1: a while. SEC observations, plenty to get to here. And
- 32:03Speaker 1: we discuss the NFL because we're headed into week one,
- 32:08Speaker 1: the opener in just two days, coming up on Wednesday night.
- 32:11Speaker 1: A lot more to come right here on How to Withdraw. Chad,
- 32:14Speaker 1: you getting the grill out this week or today?
- 32:17Speaker 2: I am, and I got it out over the weekend.
- 32:19Speaker 2: And big hit, did a smoked buffalo chicken dip.
- 32:22Speaker 1: On the smoker. Oh, perfect.
- 32:25Speaker 2: It was fantastic, and so we snacked on that for
- 32:27Speaker 2: a couple days around here. Did smoked sausage burn-ins in
- 32:31Speaker 2: my Dr. Pepper barbecue sauce. Let that baby just simmer
- 32:36Speaker 2: in that for a while and let that sauce thicken
- 32:39Speaker 2: up around it. So it was a nice weekend of eating.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Many, many, many meats. Chad has worked his way up
- 32:46Speaker 1: to 10 out of 10 here with the smoker. Perfect 10.
- 32:51Speaker 1: The name says it all. Perfect 10 mortgage. Apply in
- 32:54Speaker 1: 10 minutes. Close in 10 days. That's the whole idea here.
- 32:56Speaker 1: A mortgage that's simple, fast, and fair. And 10 minutes
- 33:00Speaker 1: start to finish. You can do this right from your phone.
- 33:03Speaker 1: No stack of paperwork. No sitting across a desk, Chad,
- 33:06Speaker 1: from a banker who's talking down to you. That's right.
- 33:09Speaker 2: You're going to have an actual person to talk to.
- 33:11Speaker 2: And they're going to tell you, we're going to tell you,
- 33:13Speaker 2: Date the rate, marry the house. Put that on a t-shirt.
- 33:15Speaker 2: Get the house you want now. Refinance when rates come down.
- 33:18Speaker 2: If you're juggling credit cards, stop doing that. And if
- 33:21Speaker 2: you're buying new construction, ask about the builder program. Builder
- 33:24Speaker 2: funded rate buy downs that can get you a rate
- 33:27Speaker 2: the bank can't print. Date the rate, marry the house.

- 33:32Speaker 2: real people, not paperwork. Perfect10Mortgage. com or call them at 855-789-1010.

- 33:43Speaker 2: or network funding LP, NMLS number 2297, equal housing lender.
- 33:47Speaker 1: All borrowers must qualify. This advertisement is not a promise
- 33:51Speaker 1: to make alone. Let's tie in LSU with SEC discussion
- 33:55Speaker 1: by starting with Ole Miss. LSU getting all the accolades
- 34:00Speaker 1: right now. Kiffin's in the headlines. They will be playing
- 34:03Speaker 1: at Oxford in, let's see, 12 days? And in three weeks,
- 34:09Speaker 1: they're playing Texas A & M at home. We'll find
- 34:12Speaker 1: out about LSU. I think Ole Miss looked really good
- 34:15Speaker 1: to me. And so did Louisville. But the way that
- 34:19Speaker 1: game played out last night, I was impressed overall with
- 34:23Speaker 1: the way the Rebels handled that game and then got
- 34:26Speaker 1: the football and went and won. That's a pretty good team.
- 34:30Speaker 1: And I didn't know what to expect, quite frankly, coming
- 34:33Speaker 1: off of the year they had to the year they
- 34:36Speaker 1: want this to be.
- 34:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I think, to your point, I think Louisville is
- 34:41Speaker 2: a contender in the ACC. They look the part physically.
- 34:45Speaker 2: And we know Jeff Brom can coach. And I think
- 34:47Speaker 2: especially offensively, they do some things that's going to give.
- 34:50Speaker 1: People a challenge.
- 34:51Speaker 2: What a crazy shift in that game from halftime, it's 10-6,
- 34:54Speaker 2: to a complete shootout in the second half, which does
- 34:56Speaker 2: happen at times. But both defenses got gas. I think
- 34:59Speaker 2: both offensive play callers got into their groove of what
- 35:03Speaker 2: the other team was doing defensively in that second half.
- 35:05Speaker 1: Fun game.
- 35:07Speaker 2: I come away from that game feeling good about both teams.
- 35:10Speaker 2: I don't know that I feel better about Ole Miss
- 35:12Speaker 2: coming out of that game, but I feel the same,
- 35:14Speaker 2: which I was high on them coming into the year
- 35:17Speaker 2: and nothing really changed. I think I'm a little bit
- 35:19Speaker 2: higher on Louisville maybe than I was coming into that game,
- 35:22Speaker 2: even with the loss. And yeah, and then, you know, we've.
- 35:25Speaker 1: Got freshman quarterbacks in the SEC, also a big storyline. Well,
- 35:31Speaker 1: I'm impressed with both, man. I mean, I realize the
- 35:34Speaker 1: opponent is the opponent. But starting your first game, true
- 35:39Speaker 1: freshman for Faison Brandon, I like the entire rhythm of
- 35:48Speaker 1: the way he played. And they unleashed the running ability, too.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Why did that surprise so many people? We knew he
- 35:54Speaker 1: was mobile.
- 35:56Speaker 2: Well, I think the amount of rushes surprised that– I
- 36:01Speaker 2: think Tennessee needed him to run early in the game
- 36:03Speaker 2: because they were getting stymied in the run game a
- 36:05Speaker 2: little more than I expected to start the game of
- 36:08Speaker 2: their running backs running it.
- 36:09Speaker 1: I've got a theory on this.
- 36:11Speaker 2: There were a couple times they needed him to run
- 36:12Speaker 2: to get a touchdown when they got in the red zone.
- 36:14Speaker 1: I mean, I certainly didn't keep up with his live. But, Chad,
- 36:18Speaker 1: Tennessee used six different offensive line combinations in their nine drives,
- 36:24Speaker 1: the first nine. What's up there? Are they trying to
- 36:27Speaker 1: figure out their starters, or were they that banged up?
- 36:30Speaker 2: Well, Sam Pendleton didn't play, who's going to be their
- 36:33Speaker 2: starting center, and he should be fine to go against
- 36:35Speaker 2: Georgia Tech. I think it was more precautionary than anything.
- 36:38Speaker 2: So they started a backup center. The real question, I mean,
- 36:41Speaker 2: they know what they have on the line. David Sanders
- 36:43Speaker 2: is their left tackle.
- 36:44Speaker 1: You know that.
- 36:45Speaker 2: You know Jesse Perry from Murfreesboro. He's going to play
- 36:48Speaker 2: either right guard or right tackle.
- 36:49Speaker 1: He's one of their best players.
- 36:50Speaker 2: You know Wendell Moy is an all-SEC level guard on
- 36:55Speaker 2: the left side. The real question is on the right side.
- 36:57Speaker 2: They've got a 6'9 offensive tackle from LSU. that transferred
- 37:01Speaker 2: in an Ori Williams. And the question is, do you
- 37:03Speaker 2: start him at right tackle or Jesse Perry and then
- 37:06Speaker 2: start Sham Umarov at right guard? Or do you start
- 37:10Speaker 2: the big 6'9 right tackle and Jesse Perry at right guard,
- 37:14Speaker 2: who can play there also? I think they were just
- 37:17Speaker 2: trying to get a lot of players some different looks.
- 37:19Speaker 2: Donovan Haslam is a transfer from West Virginia who I
- 37:21Speaker 2: thought looked really good at guard also. He's probably going
- 37:24Speaker 2: to play some. This will be the first time that
- 37:26Speaker 2: I think Tennessee rotates offensive linemen a little bit more
- 37:29Speaker 2: than they've done in the past. Because typically that's a
- 37:32Speaker 2: group that you start your five and you play them
- 37:34Speaker 2: as long as they're healthy and able to go. But
- 37:37Speaker 2: I do think they have some interchangeable pieces that can
- 37:42Speaker 2: play some different spots that they might sub a little
- 37:44Speaker 2: bit more. I mean, Faison Brandon, look, it was an
- 37:47Speaker 2: A +. I think in the first game he looked
- 37:50Speaker 2: very calm, very under control. They didn't try anything deep
- 37:53Speaker 2: in the first half. The first time he lets it rip.
- 37:57Speaker 2: It's a busted coverage when Mike Matthews is wide open,
- 37:59Speaker 2: but just that one play, I'm watching, I'm like, that's
- 38:02Speaker 2: a beautiful pass. Because sometimes, and we saw it with
- 38:05Speaker 2: Joe Milton, it's not easy to hit the guy that's
- 38:08Speaker 2: wide open perfectly in stride, but he took something off
- 38:10Speaker 2: of it. It was a perfect spiral, perfect touch, and
- 38:14Speaker 2: dropped it in a bucket where all he had to
- 38:16Speaker 2: do was keep running full speed. and catch it and
- 38:18Speaker 2: run into the end zone for Mike Matthews. The next
- 38:20Speaker 2: deep ball was perfect also. He had about a 15-yard
- 38:23Speaker 2: out route that.
- 38:24Speaker 1: Looked really good. The running ability was what I expected.
- 38:28Speaker 1: It was good. I didn't think it was great. I
- 38:33Speaker 1: thought it was good.
- 38:34Speaker 2: He reminded me a little bit of Josh Dobbs at times,
- 38:36Speaker 2: the way he would follow his blockers. And be very
- 38:39Speaker 2: deliberate about where he was running the football with that
- 38:41Speaker 2: number 11.
- 38:42Speaker 1: Yep. Look, I think it was an A-plus performance. He
- 38:46Speaker 1: handled everything very well.
- 38:48Speaker 2: I thought the only thing was, and a lot of
- 38:50Speaker 2: it was because they were subbing so many guys in
- 38:52Speaker 2: and out. And it's better on second glance when I
- 38:55Speaker 2: look at the stats. But I thought Tennessee's offensive line
- 38:58Speaker 2: in the first half looked a little bit more mid
- 39:01Speaker 2: than I was expecting.
- 39:02Speaker 1: Yes. In the second half, they started dominating... imposing their will.
- 39:06Speaker 2: I don't think it was all on the offensive line
- 39:08Speaker 2: in the first half, too. But yeah, one for one
- 39:11Speaker 2: for Faison Brandon in his first performance. Tennessee looks like
- 39:15Speaker 2: they're going to have a really good quarterback. It's going
- 39:17Speaker 2: to be ugly at times. The competition's obviously going to
- 39:20Speaker 2: ramp up, and there's going to be adversity as the
- 39:23Speaker 2: year goes on. But I think they did exactly what
- 39:26Speaker 2: they needed to do against an overmatched opponent. And by
- 39:28Speaker 2: the way, Furman didn't turn the ball over. Credit them.
- 39:31Speaker 2: Tennessee had to go pound them, and they did. But
- 39:34Speaker 2: it wasn't like bad snaps, fumble every other play like
- 39:38Speaker 2: you see with some of these teams where it gets
- 39:40Speaker 2: really easy and really out of hand really quickly. I
- 39:43Speaker 2: thought Furman did a pretty good job of playing their game.
- 39:45Speaker 2: They just had no chance. Because they were completely physically outmatched.
- 39:48Speaker 1: Backdoor cover as well. Yeah, you're right. What we made
- 39:54Speaker 1: what coming up later in the show for Hard Rock Bet. Vanderbilt.
- 39:59Speaker 1: Weather delays and different things going on. But, yeah, a
- 40:04Speaker 1: struggle at times. And I wasn't expecting that against Austin Peay.
- 40:10Speaker 2: Yeah, speaking of mid, I've watched a lot of that
- 40:12Speaker 2: Vandy game. With the LSU-Clemson game delayed for two hours,
- 40:18Speaker 2: I ended up watching a lot of Vandy and Austin Peay.
- 40:21Speaker 2: Vandy surprised me with just not looking. I expected them
- 40:25Speaker 2: to just look like the dominant team against Austin Peay.
- 40:29Speaker 1: They really didn't physically. That game was way too close.
- 40:33Speaker 2: For too long where Vandy was kind of messing around,
- 40:35Speaker 2: going back and forth with the quarterback. She had chants of,
- 40:38Speaker 2: we want Jared Curtis. I'm talking to people in the stadium,
- 40:42Speaker 2: and the stadium was pining to watch him and not
- 40:44Speaker 2: Blaise Berlowitz, and they were getting antsy not seeing Jared Curtis.
- 40:48Speaker 2: I think the whole situation's a little bit off to
- 40:51Speaker 2: me in terms of what's going on with Vandy and
- 40:54Speaker 2: who the quarterback is. I thought Jared Curtis was okay.
- 40:59Speaker 2: You know, when he played, he didn't like the world
- 41:00Speaker 2: on fire when he was in. But Clark Lee was
- 41:04Speaker 2: asked about it, Hutton, postgame, about the chance inside of
- 41:07Speaker 2: his own stadium.
- 41:08Speaker 1: For the five-star freshman quarterback. And here's what Clark had
- 41:11Speaker 1: to say.
- 41:12Speaker 4: As far as my response to the crowd, I appreciate
- 41:19Speaker 4: the passion. I appreciate the energy, the interest. And so
- 41:24Speaker 4: I don't ever, ever put any stock in the external
- 41:30Speaker 4: parts of this.
- 41:30Speaker 1: I mean, this is my job.
- 41:32Speaker 4: My job is to best organize the team. I'm going
- 41:35Speaker 4: to do that the best of my ability with the
- 41:39Speaker 4: support of the coaching staff. I want our fans to
- 41:43Speaker 4: show up. I want them to be passionate. I want
- 41:45Speaker 4: them to have opinions. I hope everyone was able to
- 41:49Speaker 4: take home a bobblehead tonight. I think that's important too.
- 41:53Speaker 4: I'm glad that it didn't become a weapon because we
- 41:55Speaker 4: didn't play well enough. I love all those things. It's
- 42:00Speaker 4: not going to bleed into our process and what we do.
- 42:02Speaker 4: That's my job and integrity for me is the moment
- 42:08Speaker 4: I stand in front of my team and say something.
- 42:11Speaker 4: That's what's most meaningful to me. Only good comes from
- 42:15Speaker 4: me operating in alignment with what I believe is the best.
- 42:20Speaker 4: That's how we'll continue on.
- 42:25Speaker 1: First off, they have fans chanting for a quarterback in Vanderbilt.
- 42:29Speaker 1: They've come a long way. They've come a long way
- 42:32Speaker 1: where they didn't play well enough, so the bobblehead may
- 42:34Speaker 1: be thrown. It was a joke thrown in there. I mean,
- 42:38Speaker 1: I understand wanting to develop the quarterback, but this is
- 42:43Speaker 1: not going to go away. Not whenever you flip a
- 42:46Speaker 1: five-star quarterback from Georgia, and it's a quarterback in your
- 42:50Speaker 1: own backyard, and he decides to go to Vanderbilt University
- 42:54Speaker 1: and play for the Commodores football program instead of the
- 42:57Speaker 1: Georgia Bulldogs.
- 42:59Speaker 2: That.
- 43:00Speaker 1: And I think Coach Lee knows this. That's going to
- 43:04Speaker 1: be the expectation. At some point, we're going to see
- 43:06Speaker 1: him be the starter. But Chad, I think this was
- 43:10Speaker 1: a decision made trying to keep the momentum of the
- 43:16Speaker 1: offense like Pavia had it with just the recall of
- 43:20Speaker 1: everything going on with the familiarity with coaches because Blaze
- 43:24Speaker 1: knows that, right? But We're going to see the dynamic
- 43:30Speaker 1: arm of Curtis sooner rather than later. And they've got
- 43:33Speaker 1: two back-to-back home games now, Delaware and NC State, before
- 43:38Speaker 1: they start churning out that SEC schedule.
- 43:41Speaker 2: NC State looked like Clemson, looked like a bottom-level ACC team.
- 43:45Speaker 2: So I think Vandy should be 3-0 when they get
- 43:48Speaker 2: through their non-conference slate after these next two games. Yeah, look,
- 43:53Speaker 2: I think the big question coming in for Vandy was–
- 43:56Speaker 2: Can you keep the momentum with Diego Pavia and what
- 44:00Speaker 2: he was able to accomplish with those teams going? Or
- 44:03Speaker 2: is there going to be a sizable drop-off? Through one game,
- 44:07Speaker 2: it looks like a sizable drop-off.
- 44:09Speaker 1: I'll say it.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Diego Pavia is not messing around with Austin Peay a
- 44:14Speaker 2: year ago. They're killing them and looking like an SEC team.
- 44:17Speaker 2: I don't think Vandy looked the part of an SEC
- 44:19Speaker 2: team in that first game. Is that starting Blaise Berlowitz
- 44:23Speaker 2: and not Jerry Curtis?
- 44:24Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 44:25Speaker 2: But also, you raise the expectations when you sign a
- 44:28Speaker 2: Jared Curtis.
- 44:29Speaker 1: Yes. So the fans are there.
- 44:31Speaker 2: That's a good home Vandy crowd for Austin Peay on
- 44:34Speaker 2: the first week of the season.
- 44:35Speaker 1: There are a lot of Vandy.
- 44:36Speaker 2: There's a lot more local interest in Vanderbilt football because
- 44:39Speaker 2: of that with the local kid at quarterback.
- 44:42Speaker 1: So you've got to balance that out. The expectations are
- 44:44Speaker 1: going to be higher now.
- 44:45Speaker 2: And I know that Clark Lee and that program, they're
- 44:47Speaker 2: not going to duck those expectations.
- 44:49Speaker 1: They want them. They want to be.
- 44:51Speaker 2: a team that people look to in the SEC and
- 44:54Speaker 2: that they're not overlooking. So I think now it's, what
- 44:58Speaker 2: do you want to be this year? Because it's going
- 45:01Speaker 2: to need to look a lot better than it did
- 45:02Speaker 2: against Austin Peay.
- 45:03Speaker 1: I think it will.
- 45:04Speaker 2: But I'm just watching that team play and I'm thinking,
- 45:07Speaker 2: am I taking crazy pills? Because why would you not
- 45:10Speaker 2: just start the five-star freshman and let it rip at
- 45:12Speaker 2: this point? I don't know what you're trying to do
- 45:15Speaker 2: or who you're trying to serve by starting Blaise Berlowitz.
- 45:18Speaker 2: Because again, one game in, It appears to be a
- 45:21Speaker 2: team that is going to take a drop off with
- 45:23Speaker 2: no Diego Pavia.
- 45:24Speaker 1: Yep. And we'll see this happen organically. We'll see the
- 45:29Speaker 1: starter get hurt or something, and Curtis comes in and
- 45:33Speaker 1: makes a play or a 60-yard touchdown throw. We've seen
- 45:36Speaker 1: the arm talent being at practice this past camp. Takeaway,
- 45:42Speaker 1: you made a great observation on text about the going
- 45:45Speaker 1: for two, Baylor going for two. And Auburn survived. What
- 45:50Speaker 1: a great defensive effort in play, first off. But the
- 45:54Speaker 1: play call would have worked had we seen a quarterback
- 45:58Speaker 1: lead his receiver, as you pointed out.
- 46:00Speaker 2: We talked about Bryce Underwood earlier with this.
- 46:04Speaker 1: I mean, DJ Lagway's just not it. He's just not.
- 46:08Speaker 2: He's a big-time talent coming out of high school. He's
- 46:11Speaker 2: going to show flashes of looking great in one particular
- 46:14Speaker 2: game or one particular half or a moment. But too often,
- 46:18Speaker 2: there's just a level of nonchalance about his game. Now,
- 46:22Speaker 2: he dropped it in a bucket, which should have been
- 46:24Speaker 2: a touchdown before that, then had a nice pass with
- 46:26Speaker 2: a touchdown after that. But then you see in the
- 46:28Speaker 2: last play, it's winning time. The game is on the line.
- 46:32Speaker 2: You've got the right play dialed up. You're going against
- 46:34Speaker 2: a great defense. It's going to be tough to get
- 46:36Speaker 2: that two-point conversion. But you have the right play. You've
- 46:39Speaker 2: got to step into that throw and lead your receiver.
- 46:42Speaker 2: And if he leads a tight end, he falls into
- 46:43Speaker 2: the end zone, and Baylor wins that game. Instead, he's
- 46:46Speaker 2: kind of on his back leg, flips it out there nonchalantly,
- 46:49Speaker 2: throws it behind him. The guy's got no chance. Good
- 46:52Speaker 2: play by the Auburn defense on that play. But I
- 46:55Speaker 2: think if you're Dave Aranda Hutton and you're banking on
- 46:57Speaker 2: DJ Lagway to bring him in and save your job,
- 47:00Speaker 2: you're going to be looking for a new job at
- 47:02Speaker 2: the end.
- 47:02Speaker 1: Of the season. I also think it's a long year
- 47:05Speaker 1: for Auburn just based on the performance. It was a
- 47:09Speaker 1: sloppy game, just a boring game at times, just watching
- 47:13Speaker 1: them play specifically. There's improvement to be made there for,
- 47:19Speaker 1: you know, on the planes with a new head coach. Chad,
- 47:23Speaker 1: week one has arrived across the NFL. And, you know,
- 47:29Speaker 1: used to, they scatter some games, but now it's about
- 47:32Speaker 1: divisional matchups. There are some huge matchups coming up in
- 47:36Speaker 1: the NFL. We'll detail those next.
