- 1:10premium sign All right, well, now it is time for today's episode of
- 1:15the Great Detectives of Old Time Radio. This one is called The Adventure of
- 1:21the Embedded Secretary, The Adventures of Frank Race, starring Tom Collin. The
- 1:38war changed many things, the face of the earth and the people on it.
- 1:42Before the war, Frank Race worked as an attorney, but he traded
- 1:47his law books for the Cloak and Tagger of the Oss and when it was
- 1:49over. His former life was over too. Adventure had become his business,
- 1:55The Adventures of Frank Race, and now we joined Frank Race all the Adventure
- 2:20of the Bitter Secretary. It's avenue and a turtleneckt sweater. The avenue was
- 2:30mellow under a mid afternoon sun, and the sweater was mellowing. My sales
- 2:35resistance is. I thought of what I would do to a young lady of
- 2:37my acquaintance who happens to be the outdoor type and perversion men. I just
- 2:42about made up my mind to step into the shop and make the purchasice when
- 2:45a reflection in the window sent my glance to the disapproving face of Mark Dunovan.
- 2:49Oh no, you ain't gonna buy that? What that's sweater? I
- 2:54I was thinking about it. You see, there's a girl I know of
- 2:57it. It's nothing like coloring with this girl's concern. It'll make you look
- 3:01like a canary, and it ain't good even for a guy with your build.
- 3:07I don't think I shouldn't definitely that now I'm a dame. If that
- 3:13sweater was a little smallow, yeah, but to race it out, no,
- 3:20don't be so unhappy about it. Just stick to women that gwin for
- 3:23pinstripe suits. The sippler. What are you doing around here anyway? Catching
- 3:27up with you from Max Fain at the coast of Life Insurance Company. And
- 3:31since I am plock double and there might be a cop along any sect,
- 3:36we must blush. Yeah, first you spoil my day by next thing that
- 3:39sweater. Then you want to push my headlong in the word nice. I
- 3:43am just trying to be helped, you know, markets, there are times
- 3:46when you're so helpful and gladly said the indo slavery. Let's go, Max
- 3:55Fain of the Coastal Life Insurance Company, Ready to beautiful office, the Jerry
- 4:00the match and a complete set of two fingernaires. He screwed his face into
- 4:04a pain, not as he what he met. Go ahead, smoke,
- 4:09I have to lay off word along some too bad business. You know Check
- 4:15Hardy. Well, there's a Check Hardy who played his third base for the
- 4:17Baltimore Oreos, and there's another one who plays polo and rides are down a
- 4:21twenty million dollars inheritance. The second one we're talking about. After the build
- 4:28up, I have to let you down with a thudden I he's lost some
- 4:30jewelry, and because he has a big account with us, he insisted we
- 4:35supply an investigator our best. Of course, Maks never can tell where those
- 4:43things will lead. There's the house across the street right. It looks like
- 4:58you might have a reception. Yeah, I love a story. Here's the
- 5:01lad with the bowtime, Markey, listen a minute. He should that Stanny
- 5:04Emerald, and he is tough, the genuine and radicle. Stay put,
- 5:11Barney, you don't give me another okay, just don't hold back. There
- 5:15were three of them standing at the door in the bronstone in front, is
- 5:18or waiting to get in. I went up. I ain't got a look
- 5:21from me. One of the bow tie, the one market fad is Danny
- 5:26Emerald, another name the reputation. I went with him. The bow tie
- 5:30was wide and soft, with an artistic group. But looking into that face,
- 5:36no one was going to come about it. Where do you think you're
- 5:43going, chim Oh, I'm here to see a man man, not about
- 5:46a dog. A wise guy. Danny a lippy character. Sometimes I likewise
- 5:51guys, I mean even like this one. If he gets as fast as
- 5:56door stand back to Guppy. That butter looks at the people and just sees
- 6:01this guy. Maybe we'll all go in. I think I'd rather goin by
- 6:06myself. I don't like companies at it. You want to be antisocial.
- 6:12I just want to go win by myself. Me. I like company.
- 6:16I ain't antisocial at all. So I'm going with him, me and the
- 6:21boy. You don't really want to do anything like that. It would be
- 6:25in bad taste what I tell you? Then, a wise guy. I
- 6:28don't think the butler's coming anyway. So if you don't mind the second wise
- 6:31guy rushing off like that, then he might want to talk to you.
- 6:35Fighting you, Denny, you have a strong grip. Sure I know how
- 6:40to use it too. Take it off my arm? Don't like it?
- 6:43Huh? Too rough for you? Is it? Wise guy? I said,
- 6:46take it off my arm? And if I don't, just what are
- 6:48you gonna do about it? Wise guy? Just he had it coming around
- 6:58out. I said, hold, you can get another one. What's your
- 7:03parlay here, chum? Nothing exciting, I said, I came here to
- 7:08see a man. As I told him, you don't scare should I?
- 7:13Sometimes he's don't hurt. Sometimes it's smart. I can agree with him.
- 7:18What are you doing? For a living. I want to investigate it.
- 7:23You already know this guy, Hardy. We've never met him. He's a
- 7:26welshit. He owes me, don't he's trying to crow. He's had a
- 7:30painting a guy with his money. You wouldn't want to work for a Welsh
- 7:35I get the feeling you're telling me that, not asking him. Well,
- 7:41would you suppose? I said yes? Then you're a soccer both ways,
- 7:46and I think you'll get what I mean. I'd rather had to give it
- 7:49to me straight, all right, I will and Grave Hardy and me have
- 7:57got a thief. Stay out of it. You do get head. I
- 8:09tried to Hardy manage about an hour later, got the same result. No
- 8:13respouse. I had it from home after that. Puzzled a little by Danny
- 8:16Emeralds placed in the picture, but not particularly Injurgue. Where I looked it
- 8:22seemed pretty much like an uninspiring sort of case. In front of my apartment
- 8:28house man got out of a car, moved to intercept me, and the
- 8:31young blam. His features are impreshly battered by someone's face. You don't happen
- 8:37to be mister race to you. That's right. I'm Tom Enders secretary.
- 8:41Mister Hardy, he's out at the Larches and he'd like to see you there.
- 8:43And where is the Larches. It's his estate up the river, about
- 8:46twenty miles the other side of Yonkers. You don't need to bring anything.
- 8:50I've got the car ready. We should pick up a couple of tooth persons.
- 8:52We had those two. We have everything at the Larches, including trouble.
- 9:01That's the same. I took time to pack a bag, and I
- 9:05sat beside Andrews while he knows the nineteen forty nine Cadillac convertible out of the
- 9:09city and northward a long Hudson river. I understand you're coming up to investigate
- 9:16the missing jewelry and see near a few hundred bucks worth of medals, and
- 9:20Hardy goes crazy. Sound better? I saw that way all the time.
- 9:24It's my natural tone. Why does Danny Emerald have to do? Without it?
- 9:26I wouldn't know who is Danny Emerald? A ladder has learned to make
- 9:31a gambling pray better. You've been better. What's the story. My boss
- 9:37doesn't trust me, Hardy. Mister Hardy, for a while he had the
- 9:41idea I might have taken the stuff you because I wouldn't admit it. Mister
- 9:45Hardy became angry, and when he gets angry, mister Hardy likes to more
- 9:48people. Mister Hardy is very good at molling people. Whose Olympic light heavyweight
- 9:52continue thirty six? Well, what do you do about a situation right then?
- 9:56Me? I just stand there and take it. I got a wife
- 10:00from a couple of kids. I'm thirty three years old. During the war,
- 10:05I spent almost four years in the army, and that picks the chunk
- 10:07out of a man's life. Gets to be that job's a job, so
- 10:11it seems worth it, not to me alone, it doesn't having a wife
- 10:15from the kids. Well, a job's a job. Who was beside Hart?
- 10:20It will be at the Largest quite a few people, including a woman
- 10:22who will make you forget everything about your name. We all way at the
- 10:31Largest looked like a b picture nightclub, and I got the feeling that the
- 10:35rest of the house would matted, both as the size and decorations and as
- 10:39night. I took a small elevator up to a custom build gymnasium. We've
- 10:43been finished in leathern chrome, finally stained wood, but it smelled like all
- 10:48gymnasiums and affected me as being the first really human thing about the place.
- 10:52As I watched the vicious blonde pin wheeled across a large mat, watching I
- 11:00would live as a man with the features of the colorade and eyes like that
- 11:03wishes. And I walked across to it, and I met Chuck Hardy nine
- 11:09gold Polo Man. I've been wondering when you'd get here, and I called
- 11:11it your place in town. You had another business at the same time,
- 11:16like by the name of any Emerald, Oh, you have designs on your
- 11:20piece of mind. Emerald and I had a disagreement about a bet I wired
- 11:24him this morning and to get the money from endors tonight. That doesn't really
- 11:26concern you, does it. I had not everything news might be of some
- 11:30interest to you. My only interest lies in getting back the items that were
- 11:33stolen from me. I understand that what your loss doesn't have a great deal
- 11:37of value. It does to me small stuff sometimes, Henri, look,
- 11:41Junior, I want those things back. I'd like that understood, and I'd
- 11:46like something understood too. I have suddenly developed a conviction that you and I
- 11:50aren't going to be compatible. Maybe no one's ever mentioned it to your hardy,
- 11:54but you're about as agreeable as a wad of gum and a throttle pedal.
- 11:58Get yourself, another boy, I'm going back to time. I don't
- 12:05want to know further part of the Hardy set up, so I found a
- 12:07phone called the nearest village to check out on train reservations. I learned that
- 12:11the next train out wouldn't be leaving for another four hours. I also landed
- 12:16the village had no taxis it was available. Mulling over the prospect of a
- 12:20six mile hike, when I noticed the girl who had been gyrating in the
- 12:24gym, where there was another young woman, tawny skin, flame headed girl,
- 12:31who'll give me a what are you going to do about it? Look?
- 12:33That made me deeply to maintain my poise. Is this one who spoke
- 12:37to me running away? It's got no plan. Where do we go from
- 12:41there? I'd like to see you stand. Anyone with the nerve to say
- 12:46no to Chuck Hardy is needed around this place. I would believe that you
- 12:50can't swim, not I or any other woman in the way. Not chide.
- 12:56He doesn't go for you. He's kidding himself that he's alive. Mary,
- 13:01I knew I was going to like this name. Get the impression you
- 13:03don't care for our host, but why stick around to share? You can
- 13:09be very direct, mister me. You get along with Juff once you know
- 13:13him. Merril here likes polo. That's why she likes hard. People who
- 13:18go for polo all ador hard. There's nothing quite so fascinating as a lovely
- 13:26woman who uses earthly language, particularly which he has read here, what's your
- 13:31name? Jake Corner? And in case you don't know this is Merrill read
- 13:37both interesting people. Sorry, I can't stick around to know. You're better
- 13:39if you stuck for transportation, take my car, just leave it Nakel's garage
- 13:43for me, be still narrow. I don't want him to go back soundly
- 13:48lovely, but this place curdles my ego. All right, Mary alone,
- 13:52take you up in a line of the car, the green Town Country.
- 13:54Here the keys. There was no one around. As I went to the
- 14:09garage, found meil Reach's car climbing. I stuck the key in the ignition
- 14:15locker. I was about to stab the start. I'm gonna glance at a
- 14:18review of mirror brused all my actions. There was someone in the seat behind
- 14:22me a man sitting grim silently. I turned very slowly, and the light
- 14:28of the dashboard pattern I saw that there was Andrews. He seemed to be
- 14:33smiling, until I realized that the expression was really a distorted grimace. Andrews
- 14:39was dead. Something or someone had broken his neck. We'll return to the
- 14:56adventures of Frank Race in just about one minute. And now back to the
- 15:11adventures of Frank Race. Crime is a funny thing. You get into a
- 15:22part of it that starts out in a small way, and suddenly you find
- 15:26yourself in the middle of something big. I crawled into the back seat of
- 15:31the Chrysler. In addition to his neck, Andrew's right arm had been broken,
- 15:35along with one of the fingers of his right hand. At his feet,
- 15:39I noticed one of those new pencil cigarette lighter combinations. I stuck this
- 15:43in my pocket and went back to the house. I found Hardy in his
- 15:46study within a middle aged woman with a sweet face and a quiet smile.
- 15:50Hardly made no effort to introduces. I thought you were getting lost. I
- 15:56was on the way, but I thought I'd better tell you that your secretary
- 15:58is Danny Enders. Then what is this a gag? Are you sitting in
- 16:04the back of that green question sounds like a job for you, Martha or
- 16:08the coroner. Mister Race had better introduced myself, since Charles never bothers its
- 16:15triviality. I'm doctor Clemson, a hardy family position. I'm sure you can't
- 16:22do anything for NDErs doctor, which might take a look. I'll come right
- 16:26away. I stuck around another hour till the local peace officer became satisfied I
- 16:37could tell him no more than my only head. Then I talked one of
- 16:41hardy chauffeurs and taking me to town. I got the station with fifteen minutes
- 16:45to wait for the outgoing train. I wasn't much to call a busy station,
- 16:49but I assume had company. Hi Jim, Hello, Irold, what
- 16:55are you doing in? I got some dough coming. Be grand guy would
- 17:00go anywhere for fifty grand. I'll do anything. I'm sound rather appointed it
- 17:06is. You see, I've just been talking to check Hardy. He was
- 17:11telling me about Endres. You know, it was rough, bunny, rough,
- 17:15understandable, good, and there's had that fifty grand on him for me.
- 17:22How do you know howd he just told me that. Quite a fun
- 17:26conversation. Me and hard it what else did it? He told me that,
- 17:30so far as he knows, the only other guy that knew about that
- 17:34fifty grand was you, so so you could save hisself a lot of grief
- 17:42by pony and that right now, what makes you so sure that Hardy was
- 17:48moving with Hardy? Don't lie, he said, healing. He's stubborn,
- 17:52but he don't lie. You don't have to not going. It comes to
- 17:56dough, So I ain go down in your diary. Is a wrong guy?
- 18:00Not yet. I don't mind a guy trying to turn the book.
- 18:03I just don't want to be the loser on the deals. Whet the kind
- 18:07of money on me. I'll let you look at the suppose I give you
- 18:11an hour and how I can make up your mind. Now I to show
- 18:17up with it at a hearty s place, a very reasonable man. So
- 18:22my friends tell me and I got lots of things. I got three.
- 18:27I'm in the neighborhood right now. I'm sold the three go I get it.
- 18:33So you meet me at hartest place in an hour. I had smart
- 18:38press be there. It's a dough. I went to the local drug store
- 18:52and called New York City. It was lucky enough to get marked down up
- 18:55and run away? Hey, what are you doing? Having a wonderful time?
- 19:00What you were here? How soon do you think you could get here?
- 19:03At least called the larches six miles west of Glenville. That'll do,
- 19:11and mark ye look along that end wrench of you. Room. Back at
- 19:18the Hardy place, hand counted only a couple of servants who eyed me lately.
- 19:21And I wanted about for a few minutes, and finally blundered down to
- 19:25a rather spectacular mezzant even overlooked the gigantic dining room as I stood here,
- 19:30but merrill read appeared. Do you mind if I say I'm surprised that seeing
- 19:33me, it was definitely about your intentions to leave of force. It's beyond
- 19:37my control have entered the picture. There's a big room, isn't there?
- 19:41It is. I didn't have to stretch my imagination to see Hardy sitting at
- 19:45the head of the table throwing bones to his boarhouse. Never mind hurting,
- 19:51rather concentrate. You're quite fetching him. Jade got the same reaction. Justice
- 20:00matter. In short, didn't you Nobody's going to overlook you, but expect
- 20:06the places. Don't try to take me away? Unless you how can I
- 20:15know what I mean? No, I have my arms round, but she
- 20:21twisted sharply away and let me. Standing there feelings a male usually feels under
- 20:25sad circumstances. Left incredibly, waited a few minutes, then moved out into
- 20:30a large hall where I had in doctor Clemson. You look like a man
- 20:34with a purpose. I'd like to find her name, yeah, I asked
- 20:37fo. Yeah, you're a family friend. I'm afraid you might not be
- 20:41incentive with my plans. I like yours. No newscas very long enough to
- 20:47say hello, but I like so I'm going to give you a warner.
- 20:53Don't cross child's heart, he said strongly. Is arrogant, and he has
- 21:00the power to be more vicious. Thanks for the table. You know if
- 21:06the police no, no, they left but half an hour ago and took
- 21:11that boy's body with him. How do they figure this day? They planned
- 21:17to eagle to aspectid it. I think Indis might have fallen going down those
- 21:22concrete steps inside the bredage and then planted himself in that car. He would
- 21:30have crawled to the car raised it's possible. Yeah, yes, I suppose
- 21:37it is possible. You don't even think that anything could be possible around this.
- 21:47But leaving doctor Clemson, I went out into a night as cool as
- 21:52a preoccupied woman. Then about a hundred feet from the house, a grim
- 21:56looking figure suddenly loomed up in front of him. You going race, Trigger?
- 22:02Yeah? Trigger? What do you want? They were your race?
- 22:07I got on the moon just like so. I am properly lighted. Now
- 22:11what they give you? An how I didn't it? I have been giving
- 22:15track. I still have eight minutes. That ain't a very long time,
- 22:21as it race, not when a guy like me is waiting for I still
- 22:25don't have the money. Trigger. That's gonna make Dannick kind of sad.
- 22:29But they they're gonna bother me at all. You know what, I can
- 22:32imagine you like your pound of flesh. Trigger? And after all, I
- 22:36did break your watch. Yeah, you broke my watch and I couldn't get
- 22:38it fixed. Know how I got that watch? Race? No comment.
- 22:41I wanted the contest singing on the stage, and you have to go breaking.
- 22:45I'm sorry about the watch. Trigger. You're being sorry. Don't make
- 22:47no difference. Yeah, I felt reasonably sure of that, but I thought
- 22:51to make the gesture. Its deadly. You're obstructing progress. I was on
- 22:55my way to get that money, but I can't get it standing here,
- 22:56can't I you're lying. I might be, but you can't have to gamble
- 23:00canyon. Danny Emerald isn't interested in watches. He wants that fifty grand.
- 23:03You're stalling. I'm gonna plan him slug in it, but not for several
- 23:07more minutes. If you're fired before the time's up, Danny might not like
- 23:10it. I just thought of That's why I really don't need to stick around
- 23:11here, do I. I paid no attention to his yell, just kept
- 23:21leaking into the house, waving that gun in his hand. Can hear him
- 23:23coming right behind me? Then from up behind, right overhead Marcus Marcus boy
- 23:33to say the least time. Are you happy to see you? It?
- 23:37Gay ain't so tough, and I didn't like get slug. I sent him.
- 23:40Look what goes on here? I'm in trouble any of it. Danny
- 23:45Emerald thinks I'm holding out fifty thousand dollars. It belongs to him. Oh
- 23:48daddy, any good? When the guy is Emerald, everybody says who was
- 23:52Emerald? Rubbed down? Orgie called Emeralds. We always know he was trying
- 23:55to run away from him. Let's go into the house. Didn't you get
- 23:59him out of any kind of thing? I've been wrestling with it every wait
- 24:06it comes, I think fling understanding. Ye, yeah, come on,
- 24:12Mark, I wanted to do something am I in race? Kind of wait?
- 24:25Look like the gathering of the clan. There was hardly in these three
- 24:29family guests, and Emerald had with him two of the friends he mentioned.
- 24:33I told myself I could probably expect three good in a second race, though
- 24:37it is shock another important doctor Clemson missed Emerald. I may as well give
- 24:44it to you straight. I don't have that money. I've never had it.
- 24:47What are you trying to approve? Race that you don't scare and run
- 24:51that kind of thing into the ground that's quiting to leave. Now you're in
- 24:53trouble. He ain't that kind Hannah? Are you here? Merrow? Have
- 24:59U welcome? Calm damn? Try this letter man, and you may as
- 25:03well keep it. I believe it yours anyway, Guys, yes, would
- 25:06you find it alongside enders? Bunny? What are you talking about? Merrow's
- 25:11a rare girl. She knows judo or jiu jitsu. If you like that
- 25:15term bet him, and that's what she used on enders as he came down
- 25:18into the garage. A wristlock, wasn't it, Merrow? Wristlock often breaks
- 25:22a man's arm, doesn't it. And there's neck too if he crashes against
- 25:26concrete steps. And I suppose you think you're going to the police with that
- 25:29story. I've already called him, and I think if we hold misread here,
- 25:32they won't have any trouble finding me A fifty. I don't care about
- 25:33the money, but I'm not sitting still for the kind of publicity that'll come
- 25:37from this. Merrow Merrill isn't going anywhere, is she might? Well?
- 25:41I'm standing here, frist Listen. There's no reason we can't make a deal.
- 25:45I don't know what you can arrange with the others, Horday, but
- 25:47I'm not going to agree to a cover up for murder. What do you
- 25:48want me to do? Ram your teeth on your throat. I've been hoping
- 25:51all along you might take that attitude, all right, you've been asking for
- 25:53it. Try this for size, not bad, A little high. Yeah,
- 25:59I felt and you're gonna feel this one. Sorry. I felt that
- 26:04one too, right up to my wrist. How did you get up party
- 26:08and we can both try it again? Just wait, oh oh, mister
- 26:17hid Let's all stay putting until the please get in and that goes for you
- 26:22two. Emerald, I ain't making a single move Race. Will you teach
- 26:27me to handle myself like that? Thank you the interesting things I could do,
